2024 BMW PGA Championship scores: Rory McIlroy in mix entering weekend at DP World Tour flagship event
For the second straight week, mcilroy enters the weekend with a chance to win on the dp world tour.
Rory McIlroy's season of almosts could turn a new page this weekend at the 2024 BMW PGA Championship. Following up a 5-under 67 in Round 1 with a 68 on Friday, the world No. 3 sits in a share of fourth place at 9 under and four off the pace of 36-hole leader Matthew Baldwin.
"It's been good. I think it's been solid," McIlroy said. "I think 9 under is probably a fair reflection of how I've played over the first couple days. You know, when I've missed some greens, my short game has been pretty good and I got up-and-down. A couple key saves on 14 and 17 coming in, and then birdies at 16 and 18 were nice, as well.
"So yeah, overall, pretty pleased with where I'm at on the leaderboard. There's a couple of scrappy things in there that I'm trying to sort of iron out of the game, but overall, pretty happy with where I'm at."
McIlroy's round began in ho-hum fashion as he took advantage of the par-5 4th before sautéing a wedge into the par-4 6th to tap-in distance. A three-putt bogey came a couple holes later and made it so McIlroy turned in 1 under.
Another circle arrived on the first of three par 5s on the back side at Wentworth and positioned McIlroy on the first page of the leaderboard. A conversion from 11 feet on the par-4 16th inched his name closer to the top and set the stage for a strong finish that included a par save on the par-5 17th and a two-putt birdie on the last.
One week removed from a disappointing finish in Northern Ireland at the Irish Open, McIlroy finds himself in contention to win yet again. Instead of shying away from the opportunity to enter the winner's circle, the 35-year-old is set on relishing the chance to claim the DP World Tour's flagship event for the first time in 10 years.
"I think it's really important, but also, it's nice," McIlroy said. "I wouldn't have liked the week off to just wallow in self-pity and whatever else I would have been doing if I had not played. To come back out and get straight back on the golf course and play a couple of solid rounds and give myself another chance at a really big tournament that means a lot to me, I thought it was important to do that and thankfully I have."

Gloomy TV ratings hang over LIV Championship, PGA Tour fall debut
- Follow on Twitter

Jon Rahm's LIV Individual Championship win came in front of an average audience of 89,000 viewers, per the SBJ.

Most of the time, TV ratings require nuance.
Anyone can read the numbers, but the numbers don’t always tell you everything you need to know. A favorable time slot, pre-broadcast audience tailwinds, or a lack of alternative options can boost a good rating in much the same way a scheduling snafu, extra opponent, or changed timezone can influence a bad one.
But the numbers from this weekend’s professional golf tournaments — the LIV individual championship and the PGA Tour’s Procore Championship — need no such context. They were bad by any objective measure, raising the latest warning of a TV audience exodus driven by years of division and confusion in the pro game.
We’ll start with the PGA Tour, which recorded 69,000 average viewers during Sunday’s final round at the Procore Championship in Napa, less than a quarter of the audience that tuned into Sahith Theegala’s final round victory in the same event last fall.
The Procore Championship (formerly the Fortinet Championship, Safeway Open and Frys Open) was not aided by the same Netflix star-winner support it received in ’23. Instead, PGA Tour journeyman Patton Kizzire seized a five-shot win over a light field. The final round aired opposite the NFL on Golf Channel, which reaches a far smaller audience than most traditional PGA Tour broadcasts on NBC and CBS. Still, the final number was paltry even by Golf Channel’s diminished viewership standards, considering it ranked beneath the August average for a Golf Channel telecast of any kind ( 76,000 ).
Kizzire’s win kicked off a FedEx Cup Fall Season refashioned by the PGA Tour to serve as a feeder series for the big tour. The Tour shifted away from its “wraparound schedule” to amplify its biggest events during the spring and summer months when sports TV competition is comparatively light. But the downside of that shift is that it risks ceding the fall months to the NFL and college football entirely — a change that could further harm the rest of the Tour’s diminishing TV ratings.
The situation was just as dire across the street at LIV, where only 89,000 average viewers tuned into Sunday’s final round of the league’s individual championship in Chicago, less than one-third of the 286,000 viewers that tuned into the league’s first event on the CW in Mexico last February.
LIV’s ratings were closer to its averages, but the league didn’t have the PGA Tour’s built-in challenges of a journeyman winner, a weaker point in its yearlong schedule or an event that aired exclusively on cable. Rather, LIV’s averages — which fall safely below the August averages on such cable channels as Great American Family, Disney Junior and Up TV — came from the final round of what might be its biggest event of the year, with one of the league’s highest-priced stars claiming a big-money victory on the league’s typical broadcast network home, the CW.
We’ll point out here that LIV and the PGA Tour faced lots of competition in the sports world this weekend, including a typical bludgeoning from the NFL’s TV behemoth and a pair of in-house competitors, the Irish Open and Solheim Cup. These items no doubt combined to steal market share from the two major pro tour telecasts, but it’s also fair to ask if, even given these headwinds, telecasts from the two largest pro tours in the world should be capable of producing viewership larger than a combined 158,000 average viewers.
Tempting as it is to focus on these questions, or more specific issues with either league’s television and competitive products, another gloomy batch of ratings raises bigger concerns about the health of the sport’s TV product more broadly.
LIV’s intrusion into the sport has made pros fabulously wealthy and infused billions in new investment, but it has cost golf dearly in terms of public goodwill. Scores of casual golf fans have reported tuning out of pro golf after being angered by the sport’s partisan rancor, turned off by its lack of week-to-week star power, disinterested in its new competitive formats or confused by the on-again, off-again state of peace talks between the two sides, which have now stretched to 15 months without any clear solutions.
Over the last nine months, executives at both leagues and several networks have slow-walked concerns raised about the state of the TV audience, but the growing number of questions surrounding sagging ratings underscored a deeper truth: the numbers were dropping.
“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves when it comes to the ratings stuff. It’s early to be worried,” CBS Sports chief David Berson told GOLF in May , a point echoed in later months by executives at NBC, LIV, and more recently, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.
At the end of the 2024 regular season, SBJ’s Josh Carpenter quoted one PGA Tour network partner as having faced a year-over-year ratings swoon of 15 to 17 percent, far outpacing the dips faced by other sports properties as cord-cutting continues to proliferate.
“I think when you look at 2024, it’s important to note, and I’m going to note it, that overall consumption across our platforms in aggregate is up,” Monahan said at the Tour Championship last month . “That’s a really good sign for the PGA Tour and the engagement that we have with our fans.”
Consumption data is good for optics, but ratings are still where sports leagues and networks make their money. The value of a sports TV deal is tied intrinsically to the size of the audience and the volume of advertisements sold — without either, a deal isn’t nearly as valuable.
This is why LIV has struggled to gain a noticeable foothold with advertisers and corporate partners, and why it has entertained extending its agreement with the CW despite those same audience development struggles. It’s also why the PGA Tour is spending the fall looking for innovative solutions for its telecasts, including its curious influencer pilot program, the “Creator Classic.”
None of this is to say that pro golf is headed in a hopeless direction, or that the losses of the last several years are unfixable next to the combined financial might of golf’s two major pro tours. It is to say, however, that the problem of television ratings in golf is real, and that each of golf’s stakeholders bears a piece of the responsibility.
After the latest round of ratings, it’s okay to be blunt.

Jon Rahm eyes history at Spanish Open as LIV Golf star makes DP World Tour U-turn
Jon Rahm is back in action on the DP World Tour this week as he headlines the field at the Spanish Open, with the LIV Golf star's Ryder Cup future hanging in the balance
- 07:00, 26 Sep 2024
Jon Rahm is set to make a triumphant return to the DP World Tour in his home country this week, potentially becoming the most successful champion in Spanish Open history.
Despite headlining the field in Madrid, Rahm faced significant hurdles to secure his spot on the entry list due to ongoing tensions between the DP World Tour and LIV Golf . The Wentworth-based circuit had previously issued fines and suspensions to Rahm - among others - for participating in 'conflicting' events with the Saudi-backed league.
In a last-minute bid to compete in his home Open this week, the former world No. 1 was compelled to lodge an appeal against the sanctions, thereby making him eligible to participate.
Rahm has been vocal about his refusal to pay the sanctions imposed by the European setup. Earlier this month, he stated: "I don't intend to pay the fines, and we keep trying to have a discussion with them about how we can make this happen,".
He further expressed his commitment to the Spanish Open, saying: "I've said many times, I don't go to the Spanish Open for the glory or anything else. I think it's my duty to Spanish golf to be there, and I also want to play in Sotogrande [Andalucia Masters]," For now, Rahm has managed to secure his place in this week's tournament.
Jon Rahm's participation in the Madrid tournament has taken on a crucial edge. The golf star needs to rack up three more DP World Tour events by year-end to maintain his membership, which is key for keeping his spot in the Ryder Cup team. Concerns were rampant that Rahm might not make the European team next year following his LIV Golf leap.
Additionally, the puzzle of his wife Kelley's pregnancy raised doubts about his ability to meet these obligations this autumn. "I haven't been able to play any Tour events, so yeah, we're going to have to sort it out before I want to tee it up hopefully at the Spanish Open," he had remarked at The Open Championship back in July.
"At this point, I'm so still waiting on what might happen with my wife and daughter that I don't know if I'll be able to play or not. So my fall is still a little bit of a question mark when it comes to playing golf."
With the arrival of their third child earlier this week, Kelley paved the way for Rahm to head to Madrid by Wednesday just in time for Thursday's opening round.
Brushing aside the off-course drama, Rahm can now zero in on making history on the green. As a three-time victor of the Spanish Open, he stands on the cusp of outrunning legend Seve Ballesteros for the title of the event's most triumphant champion.
Spanish golf sensation Jon Rahm has paid homage to his hero, the late Seve Ballesteros, after his Masters triumph last April. Rahm, a LIV Golf star, reflected on the significance of history in the sport and his own journey, saying: "History of the game is a big part of why I play and one of the reasons why I play, and Seve being one of them," as he donned the green jacket 40 years following Ballesteros' second Masters victory.

MADRID — Jon Rahm is back in Europe to try to win a record fourth Spanish Open trophy as well as boost his bid for Ryder Cup eligibility.
It will be the former top-ranked golfer’s first European tour start since he joined LIV Golf last December.
The Spanish Open that starts on Thursday is set to be Rahm’s first of three tournaments in Europe in September and October, which would see him reach the minimum four European tour starts required to be considered for the Ryder Cup next year.
Rahm has entered the Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland and the Andalucia Masters in Spain — both in October. That would give him four starts because the Paris Olympics also counts toward the minimum.
The Spaniard is being allowed to play after appealing the European tour sanctions against him for playing the LIV circuit. He can play until an independent panel decides if he must pay fines.
- Ryan Lavner ,
A former Masters champion , Rahm joined the Saudi-funded league late last year for a signing bonus reported to be in the $300 million to $400 million range.
Other players who defected to LIV, Tyrrell Hatton and Adrian Meronk, are going through the same appeal and are allowed into tournaments as the process plays out. Both are entered in the Spanish Open. Other LIV golfers expected to play in the Spanish capital are Eugenio Chacarra, David Puig and Patrick Reed.
Rahm was a late arrival to Madrid and skipped the pro-am at his home tournament because of the birth of his third child.
Rahm, who won the LIV individual title , did not play in the LIV Golf Team Championship last week because of severe flu symptoms .
He is trying to become the first four-time winner in the 52-year history of the Spanish Open. He won the event in 2018, 2019 and 2022.
Matthieu Pavon is the defending champion in the tournament that this year will include Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka.
“Winning here last year changed my life,” said Pavon, who won his first European tour title in the Spanish capital.
Fleetwood and Lowry are playing their third straight week on the European tour. Straka is playing under his exemption as being on the last Ryder Cup team.
Fleetwood seeks to keep momentum
Since winning the Dubai Invitational in January, Fleetwood has finished third in the Masters, won a silver medal at the Olympics and missed just one cut.
“I think you never know what’s around the corner in the game,” he said. “One of the things that I’ve been sort of disappointed with this year: I played really, really well and I’ve played at a high, consistent level but I’ve always been half a step behind, if you like, from contending on a Sunday.”
Lowry back in Spain
Lowry, Fleetwood’s Ryder Cup teammate, is making his return to the Spanish Open after more than a decade. He will try to win his seventh European tour title. The Irishman won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Rory McIlroy in April.
“I feel like I’ve done that quite a bit this year but I obviously haven’t knocked one off yet on my own. Helped Rory over the line at one stage,” he said. “I’ve got four tournaments left in the season and my main goal for the next four tournaments is to try and get a win.”
Justin Rose made to sweat over DP World Tour release to play in Hong Kong Open
GolfMagic understands Justin Rose has applied for a DP World Tour release to play in the Hong Kong Open, but has not yet been informed of the outcome of his request.
Justin Rose will be made to sweat over competing in the Hong Kong Open this November as the DP World Tour has not yet approved his request of a release to participate in the Asian Tour's International Series event, GolfMagic understands.
It was confirmed yesterday by the Asian Tour that Rose , 44, had committed to play in the Hong Kong Open at Hong Kong Golf Club from 21-24 November.
The Hong Kong Open is part of the Asian Tour's International Series, LIV Golf 's feeder system backed by Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) investment.

The tournament is one close to the Englishman's heart having won the Hong Kong Open at the same venue in 2015 when it was co-sanctioned with the DP World Tour (formerly known as the European Tour).
"Hong Kong holds a special place in my heart, as does the Hong Kong Open, as when I won at Fanling I was playing some of the best golf of my life," Rose told the Asian Tour.
"I’ve had some great form this year and can’t wait to return. I cannot believe that seven years has slipped by since I was last in Hong Kong.
"I tell people whenever I’m asked that it’s one of my favourite cities in the world; Hong Kong is right up there at the top of the list.
"I have great memories of the tournament and the golf course especially."
After news broke of the 2013 US Open champion's commitment to the 'LIV Golf pathway' event, Rose dropped a tongue-in-cheek response on X / Twitter.
'Justin Rose to play on International Series, the pathway to the LIV Golf League', tweeted Golf Digest Middle East .
Rose, a DP World Tour and PGA Tour member, replied: 'Let’s hope I play well then!!'
That response drew a mixed reaction with fans.
Let’s hope I play well then!! https://t.co/g72U9cOBov — Justin ROSE (@JustinRose99) September 24, 2024
But another interesting development on Rose's participation in the Hong Kong Open has come about since it clashes with the BMW Australian PGA Championship , a co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour, in the same week.
As it stands, DP World Tour members are sanctioned for playing in these tournaments when they are opposite a DP World Tour event.
So has Rose been granted a release by the DP World Tour to play in the Hong Kong Open?
GolfMagic understands Rose has applied for a release to play in the Hong Kong Open but has not yet been informed of the outcome of his request and a decision will be made by the DP World Tour in due course.
Any breach of member regulations on the DP World Tour will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, GolfMagic also understands.
News of Rose requesting a release to play in an International Series event falls in the same week that Jon Rahm returns to the DP World Tour on home soil at the Open de Espana.
Rahm, 29, was allowed to compete in this week's Open de Espana having appealed his fines on the DP World Tour.
- Jon Rahm confirms massive personal news ahead of DP World Tour return
- Open de Espana R1 / R2 tee times
The same scenario has applied to Rahm's Legion XIII and European Ryder Cup teammate Tyrrell Hatton, who returned to the DP World Tour earlier this month at the British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo at The Belfry.
Hatton will also compete in Spain.
Rahm was forced to withdraw from the Pro-Am earlier this week but his wife Kelley has now given birth to their third child - a first daughter - and he has now touched down in Madrid in time to tee it up in the first round on Thursday.
Both Rahm and Hatton were fined by the DP World Tour for having competed on LIV Golf this season.
Rahm and Hatton's fines are estimated to both be in the region of $1m.
Hatton and Rahm's decision to appeal their fines and return to the DP World Tour is vital for their Ryder Cup hopes.
That is because they need to have played in at least four regular season events outside of the majors in order to maintain their DP World Tour membership and earn eligibility in Luke Donald 's 2025 European Ryder Cup team.
- DP World Tour reject Ian Poulter's return as 14 LIV Golf players get set for Dunhill Links
In a latest update on the subject, the appeals process could extend beyond the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black next September.
News also emerged last week the DP World Tour rejected LIV Golf's offer to pay off Rahm and Hatton's fines.
One DP World Tour pro told GolfMagic he was pleased with that decision and that the circuit should 'let them suffer' .
As it stands, Rahm has only played in just one regular season event on the DP World Tour.
That came at the Olympics in Paris where Rahm threw away a four-shot lead heading into the back nine and did not even finish up on the podium.
Rahm will also play at the Dunhill Links and the Andalucia Masters next month, which will ensure he fulfils his four regular events during the DP World Tour season.
Hatton will also tee it up at the Dunhill Links to maintain his membership on the circuit.
Should Rahm and Hatton progress into the top 70 in the DP World Tour Rankings come November, they will be eligible to compete in the DP World Tour Playoffs.
The top 70 will compete in Abu Dhabi, with the top 50 after that then contesting the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
Rahm is currently ranked 126th in the DP World Tour Rankings, while Hatton in 94th.

Swiss Challenge: Tournament Guide
The Road to Mallorca heads to Golf Saint Apollinaire this week for the Swiss Challenge. Here’s everything you need to know …
Del Rey’s 58
Alejandro Del Rey made professional golf history at the Swiss Challenge in 2021 after posting a 14 under par second round of 58 at Golf Saint Apollinaire – the lowest score to par ever recorded on a major golf Tour. Del Rey joined an exclusive club of golfers who have carded rounds of 58 on major Tours, including Jim Furyk (PGA TOUR, 2016), Stephan Jäger (Korn Ferry Tour, 2016), Ryo Ishikawa (Japan Golf Tour, 2010) and Kim Seong-hyeon (Japan Golf Tour, 2021) – all of their rounds were 12 under par on par 70 golf courses.
Adrien Mörk, Nicolò Ravano and Lauri Ruuska all carded rounds of 59 on the Challenge Tour in 2006, 2016 and 2023 respectively, while on the DP World Tour, a score of 59 has been achieved just once – by Oliver Fisher in 2018 at the Portugal Masters.
Golf Saint Apollinaire
Golf Saint Apollinaire is Basel’s largest golf club which is situated just 13km from EuroAirport Basel. It’s also the sister club of Golf Sempach which hosted the Swiss Challenge from 2010-2019.
The club has two championship courses, the Fruit Garden and the Tree Garden, and one nine-hole course, all designed by renowned golf course architect Kurt Rossknecht. Every hole on the course requires a different strategy and the numerous water hazards and strategically placed bunkers provide a tough test for even the highest calibre of golfer. Players can also take advantage of the state-of-the-art practice facilities, including a driving range, chipping area and two large putting greens.
All to play for…
There are just five tournaments left of the 2024 Road to Mallorca season, with time running out for those targeting promotion to the DP World Tour. The top 20 players on the Rankings after the season-ending Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A will earn graduation to Golf’s Global Tour.
The Swiss Challenge and the Czech Challenge next week will see a full field tee it up, before the top 72 players in the Rankings travel to China for the Hainan Open and Hangzhou Open. From there, only the top 45 players in the Rankings will earn their place in the field for the Rolex Grand Final at Club de Golf Alcanada. It’s all still to play for.
Killeen Castle to host 2025 and 2027 Irish Challenge
The Irish Challenge will head to one of Ireland’s most historic venues when the next generation of golfing stars visit Killeen Castle from August 7-10, 2025.

Wife has baby, clearning way for Jon Rahm to make DP World Tour return
David Cannon
Fines, sanctions, the flu and the birth of his third child were all obstacles Jon Rahm was facing in an attempt to compete this week at the Spanish Open and make his first start in a DP World Tour event since joining the LIV Golf League last December. And all appear to have been cleared as the tournament’s social-media account published a video of Rahm’s arrival at Club de Campo Villa in Madrid on Wednesday.
Rahm is set to tee off Thursday, as scheduled, assuaging concerns that he might miss the event after having to withdraw from Wednesday’s pro-am while waiting on his wife Kelley’s delivery. The Spanish publication Marca reported she had the baby on Tuesday, allowing Rahm to make his way to the tournament.
There is, of course, a sentimental connection to the event for Rahm, who has won his national Open three times, a feat only previously accomplished by Seve Ballesteros. But there’s a practical one as well; in order for Rahm to maintain his DP World Tour membership—and thus be eligible to compete in next year’s Ryder Cup—he must play in three tour events before the end of the 2024 season.
With LIV’s schedule concluding last weekend outside Dallas, Rahm unable to compete after coming down with the flu, the two-time major winner is freed up to play this week in Spain and then next week at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland. He is also signed up for next month’s Andalucia Masters in Spain.
More From Golf Digest
Rahm’s DP World Tour status has been in question throughout the year after he jumped to LIV and competed on the breakaway tour. He could remain a DP World Tour member so long as he played four events in 2024, including the Olympics. But to be eligible to play in any regular-season events, Rahm had to have paid the undisclosed amount in fines he accrued for competing in LIV events that conflicted with DP World Tour events. Very publicly, Rahm said he would not pay the fines. The only other option then was for Rahm to appeal the fines and sanctions, which he officially did two weeks ago.
Pending the decision on the appeal by an independent panel—and there is currently no date set as to when the case will be heard—Rahm is free to play in DP World Tour events and thus fulfill his minimum starts to keep his membership status. Mind you, it’s what comes with being a DP World Tour member that is vital to Rahm—only European born players who are members of the DP World Tour are eligible to play for Team Europe in the Ryder Cup.

IRELAND's Shane Lowry is back in action at this week's Spanish Open in Madrid as some familiar faces return to the a DP World Tour field.
Lowry's 2023 Ryder Cup pals Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm will be part of the field as they look to bag crucial Ryder Cup and World Golf Ranking points.
The pair now ply their trade on the LIV Golf tour but can play in certain European Tour event after courts ruled that players from the break away league could compete in DP World Tour events if they paid the imposed fines.
Spain's Rahm is coming off a very successful season with the PIF owned league after win the tour's individual campaign, and the pair will be motivated with the crucial world ranking and Ryder Cup points on offer.
Both have slipped in the world rankings, and Hatton (Rahm has major exemptions) needs points to secure certain exemptions, while both will be keen to table as many Ryder Cup points as none are available on LIV nor are world ranking points.
2018 Masters champions Patrick Reed and David Puig are another duo of LIV Golf members back on a DP World Tour field in the Spanish capital.

As for 2019 Open Champions Lowry, he's focused on winning a solo event before the year comes to an end.
Lowry is playing his ninth event in eleven weeks on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour but is frustrated he hasn't been able to get over the line for a solo win after some near misses.
He won the Zurich Championship alongside Rory McIlroy earlier in the campaign - the only team event on the PGA Tour schedule.
He also had seven top 10s on his season, he also shot a record-equalling low round at a major championship after a 62 at the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

It's a close battle for the lucrative cards as the season is coming to a climax with names like Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin, Italy's Guido Migliozzi all trying to solidify their places on the ladder.
