A Local’s Guide to Lancaster, UK

“Lancaster? I’ve never heard of it.”
When I told my friends and family I was visiting England for a weekend, they all assumed I was going to London. Inevitably, when I corrected them, this was their response.
But, one of my best friends from my teaching days in Abu Dhabi is from Lancaster (and more importantly, RyanAir tickets to get there were hella cheap) so I bought a flight to the nearby city of Manchester and spent the weekend in Rachel’s family home.
It was my first time in England and it. was. fantastic.
In fact, I loved the city so much I’m already trying to convince myself I can afford to spend six months in the UK next year, and reminiscing on everything we saw, ate, and did (but mostly ate) in Lancaster in this article is making a very persuasive argument…

Lancaster UK Travel Guide: Top Attractions in the City
Rachel completely planned out the weekend outlined below to ensure we only saw the best of the best and got a truly English experience along the way – yes, that includes a pub crawl and a lot of unhealthy food.
If you’re looking for a super cultural guide to Lancaster with lots of museums and historical sites, this may not be for you.
But if you want to experience a varied mix of food, drinks, and the top attractions, this Lancaster UK travel guide from a local has everything you need for a fabulous trip!
If you look closely, you can see the Ashton Memorial (with the pale green dome) in the distance.
1. Enjoy the view at Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park
Will you lose all trust in me if I tell you this was the one thing on our list we didn’t end up doing?
Ashton Memorial is located in Williamson Park and set high up on a hill overlooking Lancaster. You can see it from multiple points in the city.
Unfortunately, there was a weekend-long music festival in the park while we were there so we weren’t able to visit.
But, Rachel wanted to take us there (which is the spirit of this article, dammit) and lamented the fact and we all missed out on some expansive views of Lancaster from above.

2. Visit the Lancaster Castle and Priory
While I did get a bit of culture visiting the Lancaster Castle and Priory, I didn’t actually take the castle tour (in my defense it was closed for a private event) but I can still give ya all the info you need to know to do it.
The Lancaster Castle is 1,000 years old and offers hour-long tours 8 gbp / 10 usd per person. They run from 9:30 am to 5 pm daily.
The Priory next door (which just means church if you’re an uncultured swine like me and have never head the word before) is open from 9:15 am to 4 pm every day and entrance is free.
Both are quite beautiful from the outside but I still recommend popping your head into the Priory when you’re passing by if you get the chance.
Consuming way too much food during afternoon tea at the Royal King’s Arms Hotel
3. Pig Out at Afternoon Tea
No Lancaster UK travel guide would be complete without afternoon tea, so we imbibed in the old English tradition at the Royal King’s Arms Hotel .
The serving size is large so I recommend splitting one order between two people.
Each ‘Edward VII’ tower of deliciousness came with smoked salmon, beef, ham, and cheese sandwiches, cheesecake, sponge cake, a scone with clotted cream and jam, and a mini donut. You can also opt for the less traditional ‘Dickens’ service which includes cheese, a scotch egg, a quiche, and a sausage roll as well.
Both come with a pot of tea and we opted to enjoy a cheeky glass of prosecco as well to truly feel like English royalty.
The total bill came out to 66 gbp / 83 usd for three, and you can see the full afternoon tea menu here to plan your trip.
I don’t have any photos from my pub crawl so enjoy this pic of the pretty streets of Lancaster instead.
4. Do a Pub Crawl
Old habits die hard. Rachel, Dan, and I drank a lot together when we lived in Abu Dhabi and I’m not ashamed to admit we drank our way through this town as well.
So, of course, my Lancaster UK travel guide includes a walking route for your very own pub crawl!
The city may not have as many attractions as London or Manchester but I’ll be damned if everyone we talked to didn’t have a different opinion on which pubs we should visit, and narrowing down the list for our bar crawl was a difficult endeavor.
In the end, it was still a bit ambitious, but this was our intended route through the city with the ones we actually reached in bold.
- Merchants 1688 (yes, that’s really the year it was founded)
- The Robert Gillow
- The Sun Hotel & Bar
- The Borough (housed in the old Mayors’ home and named the best pub in Lancaster in 2016)
- The White Cross
- Lancaster Brewery
Yeah, I know we only made it to three out of six and we’re pathetic but dammit we tried our best! If you think you can do better, take on the crawl in the order above for the best route through the city.
5. Recharge in the Coffee District
If you get a lil’ sleepy on the pub crawl, stop for a pick-me-up in Lancaster’s coffee district.
There are plenty of places to choose from around town, but we ultimately ended up at Atkinsons , which produces much of the coffee for the surrounding cafes and shops in the city.
It was just as hipster as you’d expect a coffee shop to be in 2019 and was a nice, bright, airy spot to grab an espresso before continuing on our very merry way.
Fish, chips, mushy peas, and gravy from the Arnside Chip Shop.
6. Round Out Your Night With Fish n’ Chips
Last but certainly not least on my Lancaster UK travel guide is a culinary staple in England – fish and chips.
Unsurprisingly, the best fish n’ chip spot in Lancaster isn’t even in the city proper. Instead, this hidden gem is on the coast but oh so worth the trek.
The Arnside Chip Shop (or chippy, as the locals call it) is a typical spot with a casual counter and a line out the door. Here, your patience will be rewarded with a box of piping fresh fish and chips just begging to be enjoyed on the outdoor picnic tables.
Of course, when at the chippy, do as the locals do.
Rachel instructed me to order fish, chips, mushy peas, gravy, and a battered sausage.
It was a ton of food (Dan and I at least split the sausage) but her recs were dead on – everything was freakin’ delicious. The gravy, in particular, is essential to a successful fish and chips experience and you should dip your fries in it for maximum enjoyment of the meal.
All in all Dan and I paid 21 gbp / $26.50 usd for two orders of fish n’ chips, two gravies, two mushy peas, a battered sausage, bottled water, and soda, so it was a pretty solid deal as well.

Bonus: 3 Lancaster, UK Day Trips
Lancaster has a great location in England near major cities, small towns coastal towns, and protected natural sites.
Use this Lancaster UK travel guide to visit all three on easy day trips from the city!
Coastal walk with the town of Heysham in the distance
Distance from Lancaster: 6 miles How to get there: 2X bus toward Morecambe fro the Lancaster Bus Station (Stand 16) – click here for more details.
Heysham is such a cute little town and while it’s nice to wander around in, the main draw is the coastal walk. The 5 km / 3 mile / 1-hour walk along the water between Heysham and Morecambe is gorgeous and impeccably maintained.
After you complete it, reward yourself with afternoon tea in the conservatory at the Midlands Hotel (a local favorite in Morecambe) to immediately consume all of the calories you just burned.
Lakeside walk around Windemere Lake
2. Windemere (Lakes District)
Distance from Lancaster: 30 miles How to get there: Direct trains run through Northern Rail and take 45 minutes. Tickets cost 15 gbp / 19 usd per person – click here for more details .
The town of Windemere has everything you didn’t know you needed in an English village – trendy restaurants, cute shops, lakeside trails, rocky beaches, bobbing sailboats, waterfront views – I mean, what more could you want?
If you drive to it you can continue on to more lakeside towns through the 912 square mile Lakes District National Park, but even if you come by train and Windemere is all you see, I know you’ll enjoy it.
Chetham’s Library, the oldest public library in the English speaking world
3. Manchester
Distance from Lancaster: 55 miles How to get there: Direct trains run through Northern Rail and take an hour and 15 minutes. Tickets cost 6.50 gbp / 8 usd and up – click here for more details .
I only spent a couple of hours in Manchester but that was enough to fall in love.
While here, walk down the pedestrian-only Market Street and visit the Manchester Cathedral before taking a free tour of Chetham’s Library .
For photographers and pop culture fans, this is where the restricted section of the library in Harry Potter was filmed. For historians, it’s also where Karl Marx penned the Communist Manifesto.
Afterward, grab a drink in the beer garden at Sinclair’s Oyster Bar , an old, picturesque black and white pub in the center of town.
If you still have time, take a walk through the trendy Northern Quarter before enjoying dinner at one of the best restaurants in Manchester . On the weekends, make sure to try the traditional Sunday roast before you go!

15 Best Things to Do in Lancaster (Lancashire, England)
Steeped in history, the city of Lancaster has royal ties stretching back to the House of Lancaster in Medieval times.
Under the title of Duke of Lancaster, Queen Elizabeth II still has large holdings in this picturesque patch of Northwest England.
Lancaster has a sophisticated character that comes partly from the local pale sandstone used for almost every monument, from the imperious castle to the Custom House on the city’s former docks.
The city was once a busy port on the River Lune, and as a holdover from that period, Lancaster has a high reputation for its coffee.
Almost 180 years old, the coffee roaster, J. Atkinson & Co supplies many of the restaurants and cafes in the city.
Let’s explore the best things to do in Lancaster :
1. Lancaster Castle
This rise overlooking Lancaster and the River Lune has been fortified since the Romans, and today’s castle sprang from the Norman Conquest.
A lot of the surviving architecture, including the formidable gatehouse, is from a 15th-century reinforcement.
The reason so much of Lancaster Castle has made it to the 21st century is that this was Europe’s longest functioning prison until it closed in 2011. The courtrooms, still in use, have been the scene of some infamous trials.
The Pendle Witches, nine women and two men, were tried here in 1612, and all but one were sentenced to death by hanging.
This is just one of many stories waiting to be uncovered, while you can view a display of heraldry in the Shire Hall, learn about deportations to Australia in the 19th century and step inside an 18th-century prison cell.
2. Williamson Park
The industrialist and MP Lord Ashton gifted this park to the city at the turn of the 20th century.
Williamson Park was extended into the neighbouring Fenham Carr in 1999 and today totals almost 54 acres.
Towering over the lawns and woodland is the Ashton Memorial, which we’ll talk about next.
Kids will have a fine time visiting the Mini Zoo, which has meerkats and marmosets, and the Butterfly House in the humid environment of the elegant Edwardian palm house.
There you can watch butterflies emerging from their chrysalides, and check out the house’s koi carp, tortoises, chameleon and quail.
The graceful Edwardian pavilion houses the park’s cafe, which sources its coffee from Atkinsons of Lancaster.
3. Ashton Memorial
This spectacular neo-Baroque folly in Williamson Park can be seen for miles and deserves an extra entry.
In the 1900s Lord Ashton had this 50-metre high monument constructed in memory of his second wife, Jessy.
The Ashton Memorial was designed by John Belcher, who contributed an array of Historicist buildings to London’s cityscape in his career.
Made from white Portland limestone, the folly is topped with a copper-clad dome resembling the works of Sir Christopher Wren.
Leading up to this structure is a balustraded double stairway made from hard-wearing granite.
The Ashton Memorial hosts temporary exhibitions on its upper floor, and is hired out for concerts and weddings.
4. Lancaster Priory Church
As we see it now, this stunning Perpendicular Gothic church dates to the 14th and 15th century, when it belonged to a Benedictine priory that had been founded in 1094. Keen antiquarians won’t want to miss the choir, which has England’s third-oldest stalls, fashioned around 1340. These are made from oak and have folding seats (misericords), many of which have peculiar carvings of mythological creatures, human busts and everyday scenes.
There’s a glorious pulpit, produced in 1619 and with a canopy capped with crown on a bible, while the three brass chandeliers have been hanging since 1717.
5. Lancaster City Museum
The City Museum has been housed in the former Town Hall on Market Square since 1923. This regal sandstone ashlar building, fronted by a pediment and Tuscan portico, went up in the early 1780s.
The museum will give you a crash course in Lancaster’s history, with the help of some sensational artefacts.
One is the Lancaster Roman Tombstone, carved around 100 AD and unearthed during a routine excavation in 2005. This shows a Roman soldier on horseback over a decapitated enemy.
The building also houses the King’s Own Royal Regiment Museum, tracing the regiment back to its foundation in 1680 and documenting the battles in fought in, with regalia, photos and weapons.
6. Lancaster Maritime Museum
Some way from Morecambe Bay, Lancaster may not seem like an appropriate place for a maritime museum, but the city actually has a long history of shipping.
St George’s Quay was among the busiest ports in the country in the 19th century, until the River Lune started to silt up.
Flanked by old warehouses, the museum is in the striking Neoclassical Custom House, dating from 1764 and in use until 1882. The museum has models of ships and small traditional fishing vessels, and delves into the history of the regional ports of Morecambe, Sunderland Point, Heysham and Glasson.
You can learn about the traditional ways of life on the vast Morecambe Bay and confront a grim chapter of Lancaster’s history when it was a hub for the slave trade.
7. Lancaster Cathedral
A ceremonious Gothic Revival monument from the middle of the 19th century, this church was upgraded to cathedral status in 1925. Lancaster Cathedral is built from the same light sandstone as the rest of the city and improvements continued over the next 60 years.
In 1909 the prolific restorer Giles Gilbert Scott re-floored the nave, added black and white tiles in the chancel, replaced the altar and installed the current oak pews.
When you’re in Lancaster it’s a good idea to consult the cathedral’s website to see if there are any concerts.
These can range from piano and organ recitals to contemporary and early choral music.
8. Judges’ Lodgings
This solemn townhouse is the oldest residence in the city, even if it has an 18th-century Georgian facade.
Behind this the building has material dating back to Tudor times, like the fireplace in the entrance hall, which was installed in the 1550s.
For roughly 150 years until 1975 the house was in the hands of the County Magistrates, and used as accommodation for visiting judges.
The house is has period interiors, decorated with 18th and 19th-century furniture by the eminent Gillows of Lancaster and London.
One of the finest pieces is a Regency-period billiards table.
You can also peruse a collection of antique toys and dolls and art by the Lancastrian George Romney and Armand Guillaumin, a close friend of van Gogh.
9. Forest of Bowland
While the Lake District is world-famous for its natural beauty, there’s another less heralded scenic region on Lancaster’s east shoulder.
The Forest of Bowland, despite the name, is mostly treeless peat moorland, with dominant gritstone fells reaching heights of more than 500 metres.
The Forest of Bowland is at its most romantic in the Trough of Bowland, which lies within Lancaster’s city limits.
This is a valley and high pass, laced with fast-flowing streams, all adored by walkers and cyclists, but also with winding drives if you prefer the comfort of your car.
The Trough is very sparsely populated, and settlements are limited to isolated villages where you can stop for tea or pub lunches.
10. Lancaster Canal
This waterway was begun in 1892 and built over the first decades of the 19th century.
It was intended to serve a big swathe of Northwest England, from Westhoughton near Bolton to Kendal, 70 miles north.
The canal was never finished, and was superseded in the mid-19th century by railways.
The longest section still navigable links Preston with Carnforth, seven miles north of Lancaster.
A walk on the towpath to Carnforth will bring you past abiding pieces of industrial history, like the impressive Lune Aqueduct, completed in 1797. The walk is mostly flat, through meadows, woods and farmland.
Carnforth is only 10 minutes on the train from Lancaster, so the return journey is a cinch.
11. Dukes Theatre
The only producing theatre in Lancaster, the Dukes opened in 1971, staging six productions a year at this charming venue in the former Parish Church of St Anne.
The building dates from 1796 and has three auditoriums, the largest seating more than 300, along with a studio theatre “The Round” and “DT3”, a performance space for young people.
As well as its own plays, the Dukes also screens movies in its main auditorium.
These tend to be contemporary independent films and classics, from Miyazaki to Kubrick.
12. The Storey
This grand Jacobean Revival building down the slope from the castle was built by the local philanthropist Thomas Storey in 1898. His vision was to help the people of the city further themselves with vocational education.
Nowadays the Storey houses creative businesses, but is also a cultural centre, hosting exhibitions and putting on talks, workshops, theatre performances, live music and movies.
Lancaster’s visitor information centre is also at the Storey, and the Printroom is a casual eatery, brewing coffee with beans from Lancaster’s Atkinsons Coffee Roasters.
13. Lancaster Brewery
Beer connoisseurs won’t want to miss this award-winning brewery in the southeast of the city.
The Lancaster Brewery has a brewhouse and tap, open in the afternoon, pouring five of its beers and with outdoor seating in its garden.
For a deeper insight you can join a guided tour of the brewery and get a step-by-step introduction to beer-making, from mashing to boiling, maturation, cellaration and bottling.
There are samples at the bar to finish up, while if you join a Red or Blonde tour you’ll also get a hot pie hand-made locally.
14. Cottage Museum
A stone’s throw from Lancaster Castle and the Judges’ Lodgings is a cosy 18th-century cottage that has been opened up as a museum.
The building dates to 1739, and in 1820 was divided into smaller units and overhauled as an artisan’s dwelling.
Although you wouldn’t know from the outside, the cottage has five storeys, and looks exactly as it would have done in the early Victorian period on the mid-19th century, with humble furniture, washbasins, humble furniture, chamberpots and household implements like clothes wringers.
You can meet and chat with the Victorian housekeeper and view a display of historic documents like indentures (contract between a master and apprentice).
15. Way of the Roses
Lancaster is intersected by this 170-mile signposted cycling route, weaving across the North of England from Morecambe Bay to the North Sea.
The name comes from the 15th-century War of the Roses, between the Houses of York and Lancaster, rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet vying for the English crown.
The trail is suitable for younger and infrequent riders as it uses specially laid paths, former railway lines and quiet country lanes.
If you want to make a day of it you could ride through the rambling moorland to Clapham on the northeastern cusp of the Forest of Bowland.
This will take around three hours each way, requiring a climb on the way there and a light descent on the way back.

Enjoy the Best Things to Do in Lancaster, UK in One Day

Throughout England, you will find a myriad of historic cities and landmarks that each have something unique and intriguing that will likely make you want to visit. The city of Lancaster certainly falls into this category and following our recent day trip there, we can well and truly attest that this is a place you will not want to miss on your next visit. As we look at the best things to do in Lancaster, UK (not to be confused with Lancaster, Pennsylvania) you may want to consider spending longer than one day there but all of these landmarks can easily be experienced in what we consider to be one of the best days out in Lancashire .
Before visiting Lancaster, it’s worth noting that this is a city steeped in rich history, deep heritage and potentially “controversy” if you believe legendary stories about the county town of Lancashire.
Lancaster was once known as the ‘hanging town’ and later earned a reputation for ‘lunatics and linoleum’. (Daily Telegraph)
More on this controversial reference to “lunatics and linoleum” later but we want to focus on why Lancaster is such a popular city among locals and visitors alike.
History of Lancaster
The city of Lancaster dates back to 1086 when it was first recorded in the Domesday Book known as “Loncastre.” Given that this city is located on the River Lune, the first part of ‘Loncastre’ references this river (Lon) and the second part comes from the Latin word ‘castrum’ which means ‘fort’.
A Roman fort was built on the hill where Lancaster Castle stands today. You may be wondering where the name “hanging town” came from? Well, Lancaster’s court was based inside the castle and it’s suggested that more people were sentenced to be hung there than any other spot outside of London.
And then we have the “lunatics” of Lancaster…ok, so to downplay this a little, the term ‘lunatic’ was a stereotype associated with the city because it was home to Lancaster Moor Hospital until it closed down in 2000. This was a mental asylum located inside a large complex of towering Victorian buildings in the heart of the city.
Today, this has been converted into luxury apartments and homes! Can you imagine living in this building with such a tragic background? After seeing how gorgeous the apartments are, I’m sure you could be sold on this idea!

Where to Stay in Lancaster?
Plenty to do and as with most places, not enough time to see everything! Why not consider staying in Lancaster overnight? Here are some of our top recommendations on the best places to stay!
Lancaster is home to a variety of local accommodation options. If you are looking for an authentic and true “Lancastrian” experience during your stay in the northern part of England, I would strongly consider the following choice.
- The Ashton Lancaster – Dubbed as a “classy retreat with chic rooms,” this luxury bed and breakfast offers an alternative to traditional chain hotels or rooms above city center pubs. This renovated Georgian manor house is now a luxury hotel that anyone staying at while in Lancaster will likely never want to leave. For the latest prices and room availability at The Ashton Lancaster, click here.
However, we all too frequently fall into the habit of enjoying the benefits of location and even “brand” names so here are some alternative choices if this is more important during your stay in Lancaster.
Start your visit to the city of Lancaster by exploring one of the most historic landmarks not only in Lancashire but throughout the UK. Lancaster Castle is a medieval castle in the heart of the city that dates back to the 11th-century, though exact dates on the early history of this landmark are relatively unknown. It’s thought that the original castle was built on the site of a Roman fort overlooking the River Lune which would align with today’s location.
In 1164, the castle was placed under royal control but in the early 14th-century, the Scots invaded England getting as far as Lancaster and destroying parts of the castle. The castle was first used as a prison in 1196 although it was during the English Civil War that this became a critical component.
For centuries, part of Lancaster Castle has been home to the county court and ironically it’s here that Lancaster’s stereotype of being a city known as “The Hanging Town” came to fruition.
Those sentenced to death before the 19th-century were taken to Lancaster Moor, a spot close to today’s Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park. It was later decided that it would be more convenient to hang people closer to the castle, so a spot was chosen and is now known as “Hanging Corner.”
Today, Lancaster Castle is open daily for guided tours and open 7 days a week (only closed on certain holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s Day). If you are interested in learning more and finding out details on tour availability and admission prices, check out the Lancaster Castle website here .
Lancaster Priory
If you choose to visit Lancaster Castle first, why not head next door to the gorgeous Lancaster Priory Church for another journey back in history? Designated as a Grade I listed building since 1953, Lancaster Priory is another unknown quantity in terms of the full history of this site. What was here before the construction we see today? Just how far back in history does this go?
It’s thought that a Roman building likely stood on this ground, potentially around the year 200. In 1094, a Benedictine priory was established here, hence the reason it was formerly named Priory Church of St Mary. It wasn’t until the 16th-century that this became a parish church. The gorgeous tower is undoubtedly the highlight characteristic of this church and what you see today was erected in 1759.
Take a stroll inside the church and appreciate the beauty of the intricate details throughout the interior. The church holds regular services just like any other traditional Anglican church so depending on when you visit, you may be fortunate enough to experience a local Lancastrian church service with the local vicar.
Before heading outside of the city center, take a stroll along the banks of the River Lune to admire some of the modern developments by the quayside. The Lune Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cycle bridge while adding character to the area and is certainly a landmark you cannot miss.
If you are interested in experiencing a little Lancastrian retail therapy, take the short walk from the banks of the River Lune into the heart of Lancaster to enjoy both Marketgate Shopping Centre and St. Nicholas Arcades. Both offer a variety of brand name retail outlets typical of any British city.
Downtown Lancaster is also an opportunity to hop into a local pub, restaurant or cafe to enjoy lunch while you contemplate the rest of the day exploring this part of Lancashire. Don’t forget to stop by Costa Coffee to enjoy your favorite espresso and recharge your batteries before heading outside of the city to explore the gorgeous Williamson Park!
Williamson Park
Take some time to get outside of the hustle and bustle of life inside the city center of Lancaster and head to the gorgeous Williamson Park which covers 54 acres of parkland overlooking the city.
It’s a pretty steep climb to reach the entrance to Williamson Park, so we strongly recommend either hopping on public transportation (bus) or driving there if you have a car. The 2A bus from Lancaster’s bus station will take you relatively close to the park and you can enjoy the walk before you start exploring this spectacular area of green space in Lancaster.
The iconic Ashton Memorial is certainly the focal point inside Williamson Park. Entrance to the park and Ashton Memorial is free and the only charge is for parking your vehicle or if you want to experience the Butterfly House, mini beasts or small animal zoo (available for purchase inside the gift shop).
The Ashton Memorial was commissioned by Lord Ashton as a tribute to his late wife and construction was completed in 1909. Standing at approximately 150 feet tall, this landmark dominates the Lancaster skyline. The first-floor outdoor viewing gallery offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Lancashire countryside and across Morecambe Bay.
The Lancaster sundial is another iconic landmark inside Williamson Park and just a short walk over from the Ashton Memorial. The sundial is located on a former bandstand and is considered to be an “analemmatic sundial” (this means that the sundial consists of hour points, rather than lines, positioned around an ellipse).
You can easily spend several hours exploring Williamson Park and this is a great spot to enjoy the sunset over the city of Lancaster after a long day exploring all of the history around this part of Lancashire.
The city of Lancaster really epitomizes not only why Lancashire is such a great part of the UK but also the country as a whole. The connection between history and present-day life is characterized throughout Lancaster as the city embraces the rich heritage that is clearly present.
Whether you are passionate about British history or simply enjoy exploring the very best of England, Lancaster is certainly a place that should be on your radar. Lancaster is definitely one of the best day trips Lancashire if you choose to explore North-West England but it’s also a great spot if you want to use this as a base to explore further afield such as the Lake District and North Yorkshire.
