China allows foreign tourists including from India after 3 years of Covid control

The decision to issue all categories of visas comes after china declared a “decisive victory” against covid-19 and downgraded outbreak control protocols earlier this year.

Beijing: China on Tuesday announced that it will allow foreign tourists into the country including from India for the first time in three years and resume issuing various other categories of visas from March 15, the latest step in the country’s opening up after three years of strict border controls amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The decision to issue all categories of visas comes after China declared a “decisive victory” against Covid-19 and downgraded outbreak control protocols earlier this year.

“The Chinese Embassy and Consulates General in India will resume issuing various types of Chinese visas,” a notice published on the website of the Chinese embassy in New Delhi said on Tuesday evening.

Allowing tourists back in the mainland means China has fully ended the much-criticised “zero-Covid” policy under which not only did Beijing keep its borders shuttered, but it also implemented frequent lockdowns and ran a regime of tests and contact tracing.

China took its first major step towards reopening two months ago, in January, when it scrapped quarantine requirements on arrival at international airports. Business visas were also resumed at the time.

Tourist arrivals will take several months to normalise but the increase in the sector will boost the domestic economy, which was badly hit because of the country’s draconian anti-Covid policies and closed borders.

“Foreigners with valid visas issued before March 28, 2020, will be allowed to enter China, as the country is adjusting its visa and entry policies to facilitate travel across the border,” the official news agency, Xinhua reported.

Many Chinese embassies including the Chinese embassy in New Delhi on Tuesday announced they were resuming issuing visas and also restoring validity of all visas issued before March 28, 2020.

According to the note published on the Chinese embassy website, 16 categories of visas will now be issued including for tourists, students and relatives of Indians who are staying in China.

Indian tourists planning to visit China will have to furnish return ticket details, itinerary and proof of employment, according to the notice.

Tourism from India to China, however, is unlikely to take off until direct passenger flights are resumed between the two countries, which remain suspended from March, 2020.

“Visa authorities stationed abroad will resume the issuance of all types of visas for foreigners to China,” Xinhua reported.

China had shut its borders to most travellers from abroad from March 28, 2020, to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

China had said the suspension was “temporary” but it ended up lasting for three years.

“The suspension is a temporary measure that China is compelled to take in light of the outbreak situation and the practices of other countries,” the Chinese foreign ministry had then said.

Separately on March 13, the Chinese education ministry and the national health commission (NHC) issued a notice withdrawing mandatory mask mandate in schools, colleges and universities.

“Teachers and students are not required to wear masks and can choose whether to wear masks according to their personal health conditions and wishes,” the notice said.

The vaccination status of students, teachers and especially of the elderly faculty and staff should be thoroughly checked, the notice added.

Passports, application form, and documents showing the itinerary or an invitation letter from China are the essential application documents.

In most cases, a tourist can get a single entry L visa with a stay duration of 30 days. UK, US, Canadian, Brazil and Argentine citizens are able to get a 10-year China tourist visa with multiple entries. China Visa For Indian Citizens

China has emerged as a major global power in recent years, and its economy continues to grow rapidly. For Indian citizens looking to explore this fascinating country, obtaining a Chinese visa is a necessary and important step. This article will explore some essential questions in Chinese visa applications for Indians.

Yes, Indian citizens need a visa to travel to China. This is a requirement for all Indian passport holders, regardless of the purpose or length of their stay in China.

The China visa policy for Indian citizens requires that all Indian passport holders obtain a visa before traveling. Indian citizens are not eligible for Chinese visas on arrival.

Different types of visas are available depending on the purpose of the trip, such as tourism, business, or study. The duration of the visa can also vary, from a single entry for a short stay to a multiple-entry visa for longer stays or frequent travel to China.

The application process for a Chinese visa usually involves submitting the required documents and paying the applicable fee to the Chinese embassy or consulate in India or through a visa processing agency.

Travelers from India are not eligible for visa-free transit through China. They can skip visa processing only if they stay within the Chinese airport for less than 24 hours without passing through border control.

Here are the steps you need to take to get a Chinese visa:

  • Apply for your visa and make an appointment at the official Chinese Visa Application Service Center website. Choose the center closest to you. In India, you can get a Chinese visa in New Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata. You must submit your application in person, but there is an option to recollect your passport with visa by post;
  • Fill out the application form online and download a digital picture matching the Chinese visa photo requirements;
  • Gather your required documents based on your visa type;
  • Attend your appointment and have your fingerprints collected;
  • Pay the visa fee at the center using cash or demand draft.

A tourist visa, or an L visa, allows foreign visitors to enter China for sightseeing, private visits, and other non-business activities. For Indians, it is typically valid for up to 90 days, but the duration of stay can vary depending on the specific visa issued.

  • Other necessary materials are required by the Chinese Embassy in India and the Chinese Visa Application Service Center.

A business visa, or M visa, is issued for business-related activities, such as business negotiations, conferences, trade fairs, or other commercial activities. To get one, you must have an official invitation from an organization registered in China.

For a business visa, the required documents are the following:

How to Apply for a China Visa — a Step-by-Step Guide

Visa-Free Access to China : If you're from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, and Poland, you can visit China visa-free for 15 days until December 31st, 2025. If you're from Singapore, you can relish visa-free access to China for up to 30 days.

If your nationality isn't listed above or if you aim to discover China for more than two weeks, we offer a Port Visa Service for just US$50 per person (valid until June 30th, 2024) once your tour booking is confirmed with us. No stress of embassy visits and visa interviews.

How to Apply for a China Visa

Planning to visit China, but don't know how to apply for a China visa? We're breaking it down for you with our step-by-step guide, follow the steps and get your China visa efficiently.

The visa information we provide is for reference only. We are a travel agency. If you book a trip with us, we can provide you with an invitation letter when applying for a tourist visa.

1. Find out if you need a visa

The first thing is to check whether you need a visa or not. You usually need to apply for a Chinese visa unless you meet one of China's visa-free policies . 72- and 144-hour visa-free transit offer great convenience if you have a layover in China.

2. Find out which visa you need.

There are many types of China visas. Choose a visa type that applies to your situation. If you are planning to go on a vacation in China, apply for a Tourist Visa (L Visa).

3. Prepare the required documents.

The following list of documents are required for any China visa application:

  • A valid passport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months when you enter China.
  • A complete visa application form (The visa application form can be downloaded from the Chinese embassy website or from our website. You complete it by computer, print and sign it. In some countries such as UK you should complete an online form . On the form, you might find an item "Serial number of invitation letter of the authorized organization", you may skip this item if you don't have an invitation letter, or the invitation letter is not of this type.)
  • A recent passport-type photograph (head and shoulders only, front view, with a white background, approximately 48mmx33mm)

Along with the aforementioned generally required documents, several additional documents are required depending upon the type of China visa applied for.

For instance, if you are applying for a tourist L visa , you need to prepare an air ticket booking record (round trip) and proof of a hotel reservation OR an invitation letter issued by a Chinese travel agency. ( An invitation letter could be provided by us without extra charge if a China tour of 3 days or more is booked .)

An invitation letter can replace the air ticket and hotel booking if you are planning to stay with friends or family who live in China and can't provide the hotel confirmation, or if your travel is being organized by a travel agency (or other duly authorized organization) in China . We can provide you with the invitation letter if you book a tour with us.

4. Submit the application.

You may submit the application to the Visa Office at Chinese embassies or consulates, or China Visa Application Service Centers (also called CVASC) if they are operating in your country.

Starting from 2018, visa applicants from more and more countries (including the U.S., the UK, and Canada) have to make their visa application in person and have their fingerprints collected .

The regular service processing time is 4 days, and the rushed service takes about 1 day. The latter is only available in extreme emergencies pending a consular officer's approval.

5. Pay the fee and collect your visa.

Go to the place where you apply for a China visa, pay the fee, and collect your visa.

The fees vary enormously depending on your nationality and number of entries. Here we listed China visa prices for some countries for your reference. It may change based on the updated policies.

The fees shown in the table are only for the cost of visa. If you apply through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center, the service fee and tax are required.

When to Apply for a Visa

It is important to get your visa early, but not too early because it is only valid for 90/180 days for single/double-entry visas from the issue date.

It is usually recommended that you apply for the visa one or two months before the intended travel .

Apply for Special Permits, If Necessary.

If you are planning on traveling to the Tibet Autonomous Region, you will need to get a Tibet Travel Permit from a Chinese travel agency. As a travel agency based in China for more than 20 years, we can help you apply for the Tibet Travel Permit.

China Tourist visa fees for citizens of India

China visa policy.

China’s Immigration Act 2003 is the law that regulates the entry, exit, and residency of foreigners who visit Mainland China and its surrounding territories. Anybody looking to visit Mainland China must obtain a visa unless they are from one of the visa-exempt countries. As for the two administrative regions of Macau and Hong Kong, any visitor who intends to visit the region must apply for separate visas as these territories have their visa requirements.

Chinese visas are issued inside and outside China by diplomatic missions and Entry and Exit Administrations called EEAs. For a foreigner from a non-visa-exempt country to enter China, they must apply for a visa outside China, and these visas are not valid for trips to Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan.

China Visa-Free Countries

There are more than a dozen countries on China’s visa-free list whose citizens do not require visas to enter the country unless they wish to stay much longer than the accepted period without extending their stay. While most have mutual visa-free agreements with China, others are granted unilateral visa waivers. If your country is not on the visa waiver list you need a visa to enter China.

Visa Free Passports for Official Assignment

Visitors from the selected countries who hold official public affairs passports don’t need visas to enter China especially if they are coming for official assignments.

China Tour Groups

Citizens from some countries may visit China without a visa for up to 30 days if accompanied by a tour operator registered in both countries.  The countries are Azerbaijan,  Moldova, Georgia, Turkmenistan and Russia.

The number of  nationalities eligible for tour group visas keep changing and at why no means static as more countries may be added in future.

Note:  Tourists from Canada, New Zealand, the USA, and South Korea can get a tour group or business visa online and stay for 15 days, but the visa will only be valid for 30 days.

China Online Visa

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issues online visas to eligible visitors who meet the requirements. These online visas can be obtained online by submitting a completed application form. Online visas are single-entry visas. This visa is open to nationals from all European Union countries and most countries on the visa exempt list.

Key Details About The China Online Visa

In this section, we want to review key details to remember so you are never in doubt about how to conduct yourself in China and the dos and don’ts of the visa application process.

Mainland China Only

First, you should note that e-visas for China are strictly for Mainland China only and not for other semi-autonomous zones and regions like Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. If you plan to visit these places, you should apply for separate visas for these regions, as your e visa will not cover these areas.

Apply Outside China

You must apply for the e visa while you are outside China, not while you are inside the country.

Seeking Extension

Suppose your trip will last longer than the number of days granted, but you would like to stay for a little while longer. In that case, you must pay a visit to the local office of the Chinese Immigration Administration in the province where you are applying for an extension. The officer in charge will ask why you want to remain in the country and may likely ask for evidence. If your application is granted, the officer will extend your stay based on their discretion.

It Is Illegal To Overstay

As is the case with many other nations, it is illegal to stay in China on an expired visa. China has very strict immigration laws, so bear this in mind. To avoid a lapse of judgment, set your alarm for the day your visa expires and plan your itinerary accordingly. Also, make sure to leave the country on the day or before your visa expires if you will not be seeking an extension.

It is not a Work Visa

The Chinese online tourist or business visa is not a work visa, so you cannot enter into any employment agreement and actively work while in the country. The visa is only for short-term visits and nothing less. If you want to work or study in China, apply to the Embassy or Consulate in your country for a consular visa.

You Will Need A Printed Copy

As a tourist, transit or business visitor to China you will need to bring a copy of your online visa along for clearance.  The immigration officers on duty will request it to validate your identity.

Travel With The Same Passport

The passport you travel with should be the same one you used to apply for the visa. Our e visa is linked to the passport and that is the document information the Chinese authorities will have in their database. If you bring a different passport you will not be allowed into that country. In case you discover that your passport will expire anytime soon, endeavor to apply for a new one before submitting your visa application.

Special Requirements For Business Visitors

Business visitors must provide additional information regarding their activities in China. Their cover letter must be signed and bear vital information about the purpose of their visit, places of interest, arrival and departure date and any other relevant information. If they are invited by a host they must show a letter of invitation forwarded to them for the purpose of the trip. As for those representing their organizations, their employer must issue them a letter spelling out all necessary details about their identity and mission.

Have you always dreamt of touring China on one of your holidays? If you have, then a China tourist visa or the China L visa is what you need. This visa is valid for 10 years and is suitable for foreign nationals who want to be frequent visitors to China.

The L visa grants the holder multiple entry access into China, and they can stay for up to 3 months for business or tourism, but the maximum stay depends on the purpose of travel and the nationality of the L visa holder. Some foreign citizens are allowed to stay for a maximum of 120 days per visit, while others can stay for 30-90 days per visit.

If you plan to get a China tourist visa, here are the key reasons you should go ahead and do so.

The tourist visa process saves time since you will not need to apply for a new visa anytime you want to travel to China. Once it is issued to you, you can enter China at any time for the next 10 years until it expires. This is one of the greatest benefits of holding an L visa.

Saves Money

It will interest you to know that the L visa or tourist visa application costs the same amount as other short-term visas to China. Once you pay the application fee, you never have to pay for visa processing again for the next 10 years, which makes it a great way to save money.

Travel Anywhere

Just like many other visas issued to foreigners by the Chinese government, the L visa allows the holder to travel to any Chinese province once they enter the country for business or pleasure. You enjoy unrestricted access to many parts of the country, like Chinese citizens.

Eligible China L Visa/Tourist Visa Countries

The L visa is not issued to all foreign countries but only a selected few. The eligible countries are Argentina, Canada, Israel, the United Kingdom, and the United States. If you are a citizen of any of these countries, you are eligible for an L visa.

What Can You Use The China Tourist Visa For?

This visa is issued to eligible visitors for the following reasons.

This is the main purpose for the issuance of this visa. Tourists from qualified countries who wish to spend their holidays in China or go on sightseeing missions may apply for the L visa.

Private Visits

Another thing you can use it for is private visits. Any legal visit that doesn’t fall under other categories is classified as a private visit.

Persons with business interests in China or those who wish to conduct short-term commercial activities in the country may apply.

Family Reunions

China has a population of over 1.2 billion people, and a significant population lives outside China. There are also foreigners who have made the country their home for many years. To help families facilitate reunions, the government introduced the L visa so citizens and families of expatriates may visit their loved ones in China as often as they want.

China is the second largest national economy in the world and has become a first class destination for international business. Every year, the number of visitors coming to China as the economy expands, leading to a growing number of visa applications. One of the leading visas you may apply for is the China business visa or the China M visa, which is popularly called.

In this article, we review the M visa in detail and show the required documents to apply and the application process to follow.

China Business Visa

The China business visa or the M visa is a travel document issued to foreigners who visit China for trade and general commercial activities such as attending trade fairs, meeting with business partners, or visiting clients, among other reasons. This visa has a long-term validity of 10 years and guarantees the holder multiple entries into China for as long as it remains valid.

Only a handful of foreign nationals qualify for an M visa, though, such as citizens of the US, UK, Israel, Canada, and a few others. A close substitute for the M visa is the F visa which is also a business visa but designed for academic exchange students, researchers, conference attendees, and university collaborators. The category F visa is only valid for 3-6 months and allows the holder to enter not more than twice.

This visa has a long term validity of 10 years and guarantees the holder multiple entries into China for as long as it remains valid.

The China visa has made it easy for citizens of eligible countries to visit and do business in China for a decade. Enjoying multiple entries for that long makes it a visa of choice for business persons. Visitors traveling to China need a visa to enter the country but don’t use the same visa. The Chinese government has expanded the visa application process to include different types of visas for multiple purposes so foreigners can easily obtain a visa of their choice. One common visa issued by the authorities is a China non commercial visa, also called the China F visa.

Many who are not conversant with the Chinese immigration system may be confused about the proper visa to apply for. This post is dedicated to the non commercial visa for visa applicants. Read on to learn more.

The China F Visa

The China F visa or noncommercial visa is issued to foreigners who wish to visit China for non commercial reasons: It is not a business visa. The visitor may wish to visit for cultural exchange programs, lectures, investigation, or scientific research. As long as it is a non business activity, it is tagged a non commercial endeavor.

The F visa allows the holder to stay in China for up to 30 days starting from the day of entry. This visa was introduced in 2013 to cater to the special needs of non commercial visitors. It is also not suited for people coming to China for tourism, private visits, employment, diplomacy, study, or business. An F visa is only meant for cultural, academic, and investigative activities.

The good thing about F visas is that applicants can apply for a longer duration, above 30 days, if their engagement will take more time. They only have to state the need for a longer time in their application form, and the immigration officer handling their application will grant them more time according to their needs. Furthermore, applicants don't have to visit the Chinese embassy in their home countries to apply for the F visa.

Overall, the non commercial visa is a single entry visa, not a double entry visa, meaning that the holder cannot use it to enter China more than once. Even if they depart China before the expires, the exit automatically makes the F visa invalid, so they cannot use it again.

Who Is The F Visa For?

The China F visa is for foreign nationals engaged in non commercial ventures. Visitors with this visa are not allowed to engage in any form of direct paid work or employment during their short stay in China. They must also not receive salaries from an individual or establishment as that would constitute a violation.

F Visa Documents & Requirements

These are the application requirements for the China F visa.

Passport: The applicant needs a valid passport with at least 6 months left before it expires. The passport used to fill out the form must be the same passport presented to immigration officers at the airport.

Completed Visa Application Form: The application form must be completed with answers for every section. Applicants must provide truthful and accurate information or risk application rejection.

Passport size picture: A recent passport-sized colored picture taken not later than 6 months ago. The picture must show the applicant’s face and top shoulder clearly. Headgear, glasses, jewelry, and religious coverings are not allowed.

Documents: The applicant must provide one of these documents depending on the purpose of their trip; invitation letter, confirmation letter, conference notices, or an individual or institutionally authorized letter of notice.

What A Letter Of Invitation Should Contain?

A letter of invitation should contain the following details.

The applicant’s full name, date of birth, and gender

Purpose of the planned visit, arrival date, and departure date. Places of visit and the relationship between the inviting entity and the applicant. Source of finance for expenses

Information of the inviting individual or entity – contact name, official stamp, signature, address

Some applicants may be required to submit a copy of their return flight ticket, proof of funds, and hotel reservation. Scan and upload them if they are required.

The China F Visa app fee is ever-changing, so find out how much the current cost is in your country and pay it online using a debit or credit card containing sufficient funds. For countries like Pakistan, Slovakia, and Bulgaria, the F visa application is free.

You can apply for a China Visa online rather than visit the Chinese consulate in your home country. Visit VisaHQ to complete the application form. You can also scan and upload your documents on the portal and submit them for approval.

If you plan to visit China for a short time, you should consider applying for a China private visa, popularly called an s2 short-term visa. This visa is ideal for visitors who wish to visit their family members who are not Chinese citizens. The family member may be an expatriate working in the country or schooling. As long as the relative is living in China or has been in the country for a significant period, you can apply for a China private single entry visa or the double entry visa if you are from an eligible country.

What Do You Need To Apply For A China Private Visa?

When applying for a private visa, you must complete the online application form with the right details so you don't have to visit the Chinese consulate. The following will also be required.

Applicants must provide their international passport with a minimum of 6 months validity well beyond the date they arrive in China. The 6l months validity is for single entry private visas, but a minimum of 12 months is required for multiple entry private visas.

Also, note that the passport must have a minimum of 3 blank pages for visa stamps. However, note that the last 3 pages of the passport do not count as suitable blank pages. If your current passport does not have sufficient pages, it is advisable to apply for a new passport before applying for a private visa.

The invitation letter must contain the following

Personal Information: The letter must contain the applicant's name, address, gender, date, passport number, and date of birth.

Details of trip: The letter must clearly state the purpose of the visit and the relationship between the applicant and the individual inviting them to China. It must also clearly establish the sponsor responsible for the applicant's living expenses during their stay in China.

Information of Inviter: The personal information of the person inviting the applicant over must be clearly stated. The letter must contain their contact address in China, phone number, name, and signature.

The letter must be scanned and submitted along with the application form and other documents. Note that the visa officer may request the original copy of the invitation letter.

Proof of Kingship

The Chinese visa officer will also want to know if the applicant and the inviter are kin and may demand proof of kinship. A copy of a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or a notarized certificate of kinship is acceptable. The certificate must prove that both individuals are truly related by blood or marriage (husband and wife).

If your documents are genuine, the visa will be issued to you within 1-7 working days. T lol avoid delays, crosscheck every information you provide to ensure accuracy.

China family visa, China spouse visa (Q2 visa)

Have you heard of the China family visa or the Q2 visa, as it is often called? This is a visa issued to relatives of Chinese citizens who are not Chinese but wish to visit family members in China. China is a nation of over a billion people, and many Chinese marry outside China; that is why many have relatives outside the country.

To make it easy for their relatives to visit China at any time, the government of China has created a special type of visa called the Q2 visa or the China family visa. Holders of this visa also qualify for a permanent residence permit, allowing them to stay in the country for less than 180 days. Q2 family visas are similar to Q1 visas, the only difference being that the Q1 visa allows for longer stays beyond 180 days.

Let's look at the difference between Q1 and Q2 visas so you'll be better informed about both.

Q1: The Q1 visa allows the holder to stay for more than 180 days as is for applicants with family ties to Chinese citizens who may be their sons, daughters, spouses, spouses of sons or daughters, sisters, brothers, grandparents, grandsons, and granddaughters or parent in-laws. This visa is also available for those coming to China for foster care.

Q2: The Q2 visa, on the other hand, is for applicants whose relatives are Chinese citizens too. The visa allows the single holder to enter China but cannot hold an automatic permanent residency; instead, they must apply for a temporary residency. Q2 visa applicants may qualify for 1-5 years of residency, but they can enter it exit China as long as the visa is valid.

However, kindly note that a Q2 visa may be valid for a minimum of 30 – 180 days and allows for single or double entries; there are even multiple entry Q2 visas too. The visa is highly flexible and issued based on the Applicant's need and eligibility.

 Passport/Residency Permit

The Applicant must also upload the passport or permanent resident card of the relative inviting them to China.

If you have all these documents, you can successfully apply for a Q2 China family visa.

How To Apply

Those seeking this visa will have to approach the Chinese embassy or consulate in their country. They can also approach a China visa application outfit because Chinese embassies do not accept this type of visa application by mail. Some China visa application center in some countries allows applicants to send their applications by post but charge extra for this service.

Others require the Applicant to arrive in person to submit their application. So check with the embassy in your country to see how they operate. The normal processing time for this visa is 4 working days, so we recommend you apply for it a few weeks before your planned date for your trip.

Explained: China’s relaxed visa norms, what they mean for Indian professionals

The chinese embassy in india updated the visa policy with effect from june 13. now, foreign nationals and their accompanying family members going to china for resumption of work in all fields are allowed to apply..

when china tourist visa open for indian

After a two-year blanket ban, the Chinese embassy has updated its visa policy to allow Indian professionals and their families to return to China for resumption of all work in all areas. China has also decided to process applications of Indian students at Chinese universities who want to rejoin their courses.

How had China changed its visa policy?

when china tourist visa open for indian

In light of the rapid spread of Covid-19 throughout the world, China had decided to suspend entry into China for foreign nationals with visas or residence permits. China had decided to temporarily restrict non-Chinese nationals from a number of countries, including Bangladesh, Belgium, Ethiopia, France, India, Italy, Philippines, Russia, and the United Kingdom.

Chinese visa and/or residence permit holders (for work, personal matters, and reunion) were not permitted entry into China, even if they were still valid at the time of these announcements by Chinese embassies. Foreign nationals with APEC Business Travel Cards were also denied entry. Port visas, the 24/72/144-hour visa-free transit policy, and the Guangxi 15-day visa-free policy for foreign tour groups from ASEAN countries were also suspended. But entry with diplomatic service had remained unaffected.

What was India’s stand on the visa ban?

Vikram Misri, India’s former ambassador to China and current Deputy National Security Advisor had last year expressed “disappointment” over China’s refusal to allow the return of thousands of stranded Indian students, employees, and their families due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

China’s restrictions, he had then said, were an “unscientific approach” to a purely humanitarian issue. India had urged Beijing to adopt a “congenial stance”, saying continuation of the strict restrictions was putting the academic careers of thousands of Indian students in jeopardy. The restrictive visa policy by China had led to India suspending tourist visas issued to Chinese nationals in April 2022.

Festive offer

Just a few days ago, a group of Indian professionals based in China had requested External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to encourage Beijing to enable their stranded families to return.

What changes now?

The Chinese embassy in India updated the visa policy with effect from June 13. Now, foreign nationals and their accompanying family members going to China for resumption of work in all fields are allowed to apply. It permits family members of Chinese citizens and foreigners with Chinese permanent residence permit to go to China for family reunion or visiting relatives.

With this announcement, Indians with Chinese spouses and numerous Chinese employees stranded in India due to China’s visa limitations are also relieved. Visas for tourism and private purposes, however, are still suspended, according to the Chinese embassy.

What does it mean for Indian students?

The new announcement has come as a relief for Indian students. According to some estimates, nearly 23,000 Indian students, most of them studying medicine in Chinese colleges, were stuck in India after returning home in December 2019. Around 12,000 Indian students, according to reports, had expressed a desire to return after the situation began appearing less threatening.

The visa announcement by China has raised hopes that previously restricted flights between the two countries will be resumed soon.

In recent months, China has allowed students from countries such as Pakistan, Thailand, the Solomon Islands, and, most recently, Sri Lanka to return.

BEIJING (Reuters) -China and Australia will provide each other's citizens with multiple-entry visas of up to five years for tourism and business from Friday, the Chinese foreign ministry said, in another sign of improving ties between the two countries.

The visa arrangement followed a milestone trip by China's Premier Li Qiang to Australia earlier this week that marked a stabilisation in bilateral relations after a period of frosty ties.

Previously, Chinese citizens could apply for visas of up to one year to visit Australia, or up to 10 years for frequent travellers.

Within an hour following the announcement, searches for flight tickets, hotels and other items for Australia surged more than 200% on Chinese travel site Tongcheng Travel, state-backed media The Paper reported.

Since last year, China has been easing entry requirements for visitors from some countries to facilitate travel for business and pleasure, following three years of harsh COVID-19 restrictions that had largely shut its international borders.

During Li's trip to Australia, he said China would also include Australia in its visa waiver scheme, allowing Australians to visit the country for up to 15 days without a visa.

If Taiwan continues with its plan to allow visa-on-arrival for Indian travelers, it will join a growing list of countries that are easing visa requirements to attract the outbound market. Also in focus are money minting corporate events for Indian business travelers.

Bulbul Dhawan

Taiwan has announced that it is “actively considering” extending visa-on-arrival for Indian travelers, deputy foreign minister Tien Chung-kwang said this week.

Chung-kwang cited the outbound power of Indians which led the government to seriously consider easing the visa procedure. However, he said this would first need to be discussed with the immigration department.

Indian travelers currently need to apply for a visa through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India and can take anywhere between 2-10 working days.

The Big Challenge

Taiwan is looking at India as a key target market, especially the corporate incentive market, to reach its target of 10 million annual tourists, Trust Lin, deputy director-general of Taiwan Tourism Administration, told Taiwanese media on Wednesday.

A recent report by consulting firm McKinsey and Company positioned India as a fast-growing source of outbound tourism. Indian travelers have a higher spending power . In 2023, they reached a new peak in overseas spending , shelling out $31.7 billion, of which 54% was on international travel: $17 billion.

However, the absence of direct flights between Taiwan and India is a major challenge, according to Lin. Direct flights between India and Taiwan were suspended during Covid, but have yet to be relaunched. This has led to a lack of convenient travel options between the two countries, he said.

Taiwan’s India Mission

Last year, Taiwan representative to India Baushuan Ger told Indian media that the country is aiming to welcome more than 100,000 Indian tourists annually, even as its first focus is to reach pre-pandemic tourist arrival numbers in the Indian market.

In 2019, 40,000 Indian travelers had visited the country. Last year, the tourist arrivals from India to Taiwan stood at 32,000. The country anticipates full recovery of Indian tourist levels to pre-pandemic figures this year.

In order to boost tourism from India, Taiwan Tourism Administration opened the Taiwan Tourism Information Centre in Mumbai earlier this year. This marked the country’s entry into India post the pandemic-induced break.

The tourism administration’s Singapore office also appointed a representative to drive its growth plan for the India market. Its growth plans focus on the Indian Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) market, weddings, and leisure travelers.

ResearchAndMarkets.com forecasts that India’s outbound MICE tourism market will reach $13.4 billion by 2031.

India is the ninth-largest market globally for business travel expenditure and the fourth-largest in the Asia Pacific region. According to managing director of FCM Travel India, Sunny Sodhi , 86% of business travelers in India consider travel necessary for meeting their business goals.

Global Business Travel Association has projected that India’s business travel spending will reach $38 billion this year. A full recovery to pre-2019 spending levels is expected by 2025. In 2023, India’s business travel spending surged by almost 25% reaching 78% of pre-pandemic levels.

Taiwan Tourism Administration also unveiled a new initiative — Taiwan Specialist Program — in April with the aim of educating Indian travel trade professionals about Taiwan’s tourism offerings through an e-learning program.

Focus on Corporate Travel

Also in April, the authority held a multi-city roadshow in India, visiting Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru to engage with travel trade representatives. During its roadshow, Taiwan especially targeted the MICE segment.

Travel for meetings, conferences, conventions and incentive trips has become the new normal, often outpacing traditional business travel, Joseph Cheng, director of the tourism administration’s Singapore office had said.

Cheng said that Taiwan is therefore keen to develop this sector. “India’s outbound travel market exceeds 27 million people, with over 41% traveling for leisure and recreation, and another 16% for business purposes. This constitutes the overall MICE share of Indian outbound travel.”

Incentive trips are making a comeback , according to FCM Meetings & Events India. The corporate travel firm noted a 30% jump in requests for them in the first quarter from a year earlier.

China, Australia to issue five-year visas to citizens for tourism, business

B EIJING (Reuters) - China and Australia will provide each other's citizens with multiple-entry visas of up to five years for tourism and business from Friday, the Chinese foreign ministry said, in another sign of improving ties between the two countries.
