The Miami Booze Cruise starts in Downtown Miami at Bayside Marina. After the hour and a half long check-in boarding starts for a three hour wild & crazy boat ride. Local DJ’s get the party started and keep the party going while our bartenders will keep the drinks flowing. Additionally complementary light snacks are provided on board. After the Booze Cruise is over our Coast Guard certified captain will navigate guests safely back to the meeting location.

Everything to Know About Alcohol & Drinks on a Cruise (Costs, Rules, & More)

For many people, it’s not a cruise unless they are enjoying themselves with a drink in their hand. After all, what’s more relaxing than hanging out poolside with a cold beer or tasty cocktail?

Of course, cruise lines are happy to help. Bars are everywhere on a cruise ship, and the alcohol flows freely. But it’s certainly not free. Drinks are big business on a cruise.

So how much will you pay for a drink? What sort of beverages are available? Who can buy a beer or cocktail? These are just a few questions you might have about enjoying alcohol on a cruise. We answer them all (plus roughly a dozen more) for you below.

How much does beer cost on a cruise?

Looking for a brew? Cruise ships will have tons of options, including some like Carnival that even brew their own beer to sell. But if it’s a large, nationally known beer, it’s likely to be on the ship… along with some other options like local beers. Norwegian Cruise Line even has some ships with dozens of beers on tap.

In general, expect prices to be in the $7-9 range, before gratuity. With gratuity, expect to spend about $8-10.50 per beer.

As an example, below is a list of prices and beers from a recent Royal Caribbean cruise. Keep in mind these prices are before gratuity is added on.

Other cruise lines might have prices that are slightly higher or lower but this is a good ballpark. As well, options will vary by cruise line and even from bar to bar on some ships.

How much do cocktails cost on the ship?

Perhaps nothing is as iconic on a cruise ship as sipping a delicious cocktail with an umbrella in it. And cruise lines are happy to oblige. Not only can you get classics like Rum Runners, Margaritas, and Mai Tais, but cruise lines are constantly introducing unique cocktails that you won’t find anywhere else.

In other words, even if you aren’t a big cocktail drinker, there’s likely to be something that you’ll want to sip.

The downside? You definitely have to pay for it. Prices for cocktails on cruise ships usually run about $10-14 per drink, before gratuity . So expect to spend about $12 to $16.50 per beverage when gratuity is added.

Here is a sample menu from a recent Carnival cruise to give you an idea of what’s offered. Just like different restaurants, different bars on the ship will have different drink options:

What should I know about drink packages?

As you can see, the price of alcohol on the ship can be expensive. If you’re looking to save money, the cruise line offer drink packages. These packages offer up all you want for one price. So, for example, a cruise line like Carnival will charge about $55 per day for a package, and for that amount you can simply grab a drink when you’re ready.

Drink packages can be a considerable cost, but make the budgeting much easier.

Before you buy a package, however, there are lots of things to know. For example, if one adult in the cabin buys the package, then all adults normally have to purchase it as well. And if you purchase, you have to buy the package for every day of the cruise.

Is gratuity included on drinks?

If you have a drink package, then you don’t have to worry about gratuity being added when you get something from a bar. The gratuity is instead added onto the daily cost of the package. So a $70 per day drink package will have an 18-20% gratuity charge (the amount varies by cruise line) and actually costs you closer to $85 per day. But when you get a drink, you won’t see any additional charges, for the drink or gratuity.

However, if purchasing a drink without the package, then you will be charged an additional gratuity on the menu price . As just mentioned, this amount varies by cruise line but is normally 18-20%.

So a $10 drink on the menu will actually end up being about $12. An $8 beer would be closer to $10.

One thing to know is that while this gratuity is charged automatically, when you sign the receipt you’ll see a line for an additional tip. You aren’t required or expected to add more unless you want to do so.

What’s the drinking age on a cruise ship?

With cruise ships there are some unique situations that you don’t find with other vacations. For instance, while docked in a country, the ship is bound to the laws of that nation. But when outside their waters, they are not. And then, a ship might visit three or four different countries with different laws during the same cruise.

To keep things simple, ships sailing from the United States have a drinking age of 21 years old . Ships sailing from points in Europe, Asia, and Australia typically have a drinking age of 18 years old.

But local laws in places your ship will visit might have different drinking ages. In some cases, it may be legal for someone to drink in port, but not allowed on the cruise ship. For instance, Mexico and The Bahamas have an 18 year drinking age, but ships departing the United States have a 21 year age minimum.

How do I buy drinks on the ship?

Put that wallet away. To buy drinks on the ship you don’t need cash or a credit card. In most cases you simply hand over your room keycard, which acts as a charge card for your onboard account. (Sometimes you simply give your room number and the staff charges your account that way.)

Once charged, you’ll be presented a receipt to sign for your drink.

Have a drink package? Don’t worry, the bar staff will know when your card is swiped that you have the package. You won’t be charged for the beverage.

Is there a limit to how much I can drink?

There are no set limits on how much you can drink. One exception is that Carnival does limit those with drink packages to 15 alcoholic beverages per day. (It’s not clear if that limit applies to those without the package.)

Still, for the most part you aren’t under any clearly defined limit. That said, don’t expect to continue to be served if you are showing signs of dangerous levels of intoxication. The cruise lines want you to relax, enjoy yourself, and have a good time, but not at the expense of your health or the well-being of other passengers.

What brands of alcohol are available?

There is seemingly an endless number of options when it comes to alcohol brands on a cruise ship. In fact, there are bound to be brands you’ve never tasted or even heard of before, in addition to well-known names.

So will your favorite brand of beer, wine, or liquor be served? That depends.

If your favorite is a popular brand with national presence, then you can expect it to be on the ship. If it’s a lesser-known or regional brand, then the chances are much lower.

For instance, if you’re from Texas then Shiner Bock is a well-known beer brand and served just about anywhere in the state… but not nationally. We have yet to see the brand on a cruise ship unless sailing from Texas.

Major brands of alcohol like Tito’s, Jack Daniel’s, Crown Royal, Maker’s Mark are all widely available. In addition, you will definitely find some lesser-known options as well, but not all.

What time do the bars open and close?

“Cruise time” is a little different from regular time. So if you’re wanting a drink in the morning, that’s no issue. Individual bar schedules will vary, but apart from very late night/early morning (e.g. 3-8 a.m.) you should be able to find somewhere serving, though it may only be one or two spots.

Can I take my drink anywhere around the ship?

Yes. At first it can seem a little weird walking from a restaurant to the casino to the pool all while carrying a drink in your hand. For those of us used to laws surrounding public display of open containers, it feels unnatural. On a cruise ship, it’s completely ok and commonplace.

Drinks can be taken with you anywhere around the ship. So grab a drink and head to a show, dinner, the pool, casino, or just back to the cabin.

Can I order two drinks/doubles?

Sure, although some lines have rules if you have the drink package. If you don’t have the package, then it’s not a big deal to order multiple drinks at once. In fact, cruise lines often have beer buckets that you can purchase that have 4-6 beers.

Want a drink for you and a friend? Want a double? Just order it, it’s no issue at all.

If you have the drink package, however, then things get a little more complicated. Since these packages are for individuals and not meant to be shared, there are rules that limit the ability to order multiple drinks. For example, Carnival’s package doesn’t allow double shots and you can only purchase one drink at a time, with a five-minute waiting period between drinks.

Is There a Mini-Bar in the Cabin?

Often, but not always. Every cabin will have a small refrigerator, which often doubles as a mini-bar with a number of beers, liquors, sodas, and waters. (We have been on cruises where the refrigerator is empty.)

Want something to drink? Help yourself, but just know you’ll be charged. The menu prices are typically posted on the fridge or nearby. Even if you have a drink package, mini-bar items are excluded.

Can I bring alcohol onboard?

You can’t bring most alcohol onto the ship for drinking during your cruise. So if you wanted to bring a bottle of rum or a 12-pack of beer from home to enjoy while sailing, that’s not allowed. Cruise lines expect you to purchase their bar offerings. They do, however allow you to bring on a bottle of wine or champagne.

If you are in port and find a bottle of something that you want, then you can also buy it and bring it home with you. So if you visit Mexico and pick up a bottle of tequila, you can bring it back with you as you board the ship.

The difference? When you return to the ship the bottle will be taken from you and placed in storage. It will then be returned to you the last night of the cruise to take home. So don’t think you’re going to be able to enjoy it while sailing.

One other thing to note is that some lines — including Carnival and Royal Caribbean — do allow you to bring on some non-alcoholic beverages like sodas and waters. You can find more details here .

Can I buy duty-free alcohol on the ship to mix drinks?

Step on a cruise ship (or head out into port), and you’ll see lots of opportunity for duty-free shopping. Cigarettes and alcohol are the big sellers, and the prices are good for what’s offered.

You might have the idea to bring on mixers and then buy a bottle from the duty-free shop to enjoy on your cruise. Unfortunately, that’s not allowed.

When buying from a duty-free shop, your bottles will be packaged and then stored by the staff until the last day of your cruise. They will then be delivered to your cabin on the last night to take with you as you get off the ship.

What happens if I sneak alcohol onto a cruise?

Given the price of drinks on the ship, you wouldn’t be alone in wondering about sneaking drinks on with you in your luggage as you board.

It’s relatively common that people try this trick. In fact, when boarding you’ll likely find several people having bottles of liquid being closely examined by the security staff during boarding.

In other words, security is on the lookout for smuggled booze. If found, expect it to be removed and likely destroyed. If put it in your checked luggage, you might be called down to retrieve your bag.

The terms and conditions of sailing may give the cruise line the right to not allow you to board if found trying to sneak on alcohol, however, we’ve personally never heard of that happening.

Still, it could lead to some awkward conversations — and losing your alcohol — should you be caught trying to sneak it onto the ship.

How can I save money on drinks?

There’s no question that it can be expensive to drink on a cruise ship. But there are ways that you can drink for less money. Here are a few tips:

Drink in port instead: Ports of call offer a chance to save money on drinks. Many areas near where the ship docks will have cheap(er) drink specials designed to attract the business of cruise passengers. By heading off the ship you can save money versus drinking on the ship.

Look for sales: If you do plan to drink on the ship, be sure to keep an eye out for drink specials. They will often be mentioned in the daily planner that’s delivered to your room each night. Maybe it’s a happy hour at a certain bar or certain drinks that have a discount.

Do the math on drink packages: If you’re a big drinker, then drink packages can save you tons. These packages are also expensive, so if you don’t get your money’s worth, then you could end up spending more than you would otherwise. In today's culture, "booze cruise" is a pretty common phrase. And really, is there a better way to describe a boat ride with cocktails flowing freely among those onboard, whose main purpose of being there is to drink? Yeah, booze cruise fits just right. So whether you're looking for bachelorette party ideas , a way to ring in New Year's Eve , or just a fun night out with your friends, here are the best booze cruise options around Los Angeles.

Booze cruise options around L.A.

Tiki mermaid.

Docked in Marina del Rey, this Polynesian-themed boat is stocked with a full bar, and you can add an open bar to any of the cruises they offer. If you're looking for a specific alcohol-focused cruise, the Tiki Mermaid offers a "Drink & Dance" cruise which includes a three hour yacht rental, an unlimited full bar (with well brand alcohol), as well as snacks of pretzels and nuts.  Tiki Mermaid is located at 13755 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey (310-410-8454). "Drink & Dance" cruise is $57 per person (40 minimum) or $69 per person (25 minimum). 

Hornblower Cruises

Hornblower has multiple locations along Southern California's coastline, and while its Marina del Rey and Newport Beach ports offer brunch and dinner cruises, we wouldn't consider those booze cruises. However, during summer months, the Long Beach port hosts a 90-minute cocktail cruise at 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays with live music and alcohol.  Hornblower's Long Beach port is located at 100 Aquarium Way, Dock 6  ( 310-301-6000) . The cocktail cruise is $40. 

Why Knot? Party Cruises

This historic 1942 Navy ferry vessel is now a party vessel with a full-service bar and dance floor. The boat will go through the Port of Long Beach, under the Desmond Bridge and land back at Berth 55. These cruises are not on a regular schedule, but can be booked independently with charters available between 9am and midnight. The boat can fit up to 110 people and there's a three-hour minimum.  Why Knot? Party Cruises is located at 555 Pine Ave, Berth 55, in Long Beach (562-349-4209). Charter prices vary depending on the day, ranging between $350 an hour to $450 an hour. 

Cruise Newport Beach

If you're looking for a booze cruise in Orange County, this company offers two party cruises ripe for a good time. Cruise Newport Beach's Fiesta Cruise features complimentary chips and salsa as well as a full-service cantina, while the Entertainment/Nightlife Cruise features live music, dancing and, yes, a full bar. Both cruises take you through Newport Bay.  Cruise Newport Beach is located at 400 Main St, Newport Beach (949-673-1489). Cruise dates and times vary. Fiesta Cruise tickets are $25; Entertainment/Nightlife Cruise tickets vary. 

Cruise Invictus

This 35-foot sailboat may not have a bar on board, but you're encouraged to bring your favorite drinks along with you on any of their available cruises. If you're truly looking for a booze cruise feel, we suggest Happy Hour Fridays. This cruise has a pit stop at Killer Shrimp so you can sip on cocktails and snack on appetizers before getting back on board to finish the sailing trip.  Cruise Invictus is located in Marina del Rey. Happy Hour Fridays (only available for group of six) is $125 per person. 

Carnival Cruise Line

The Carnival Cruise to Ensenada, Mexico, is the ultimate booze cruise. You'll need some stamina for this three-day trip, which includes two days at sea and one day at the port in Ensenada. On board, guests can enjoy swimming pools, water slides, restaurants and, of course, lots of drinking.  Carnival Cruise Line's Ensenada bound ship departs from Long Beach on a varying schedule. Cabins range from $194–$499 per person.

Country Booze Cruise 2017

If you have the stamina to drink and dance for three nights, then this country-themed booze cruise is for you. The ship will leave from Long Beach on Friday, January 6, 2017, for a three night party featuring live bands, DJ, line dancing, and, of course, booze. It will dock in Ensenada, Mexico, on Saturday and return to the Long Beach port Monday, January 9. The Country Booze Cruise 2017 is Jan 6-9. Cabins prices range from $231-$480. Music has always been a part of Dan Siracusa throughout his life. Doing theatre and choirs at a very young age, he always had an addiction to the spotlight. When high school came around, Dan spent nearly all of his time jamming with anyone that was willing, playing in several bands while also singing in the schools musicals. After graduation and up until present, his love for music has grown even stronger. Being the frontman for various bands certainly was a great experience for him, but he always felt something was missing. In an attempt to take everything he learned and start a solo project, The Siracusa Project was formed. Holland America drink packages: Cost, inclusions and what to know before you buy

Beverage packages aren't for everyone, but they can be a nice way to give your cruise vacation a more luxurious, all-inclusive feel. If you're sailing Holland America , drink packages are available as optional add-ons to your cruise fare. Choose from four different packages, ranging from a simple soda package to an option that includes premium alcoholic beverages.

Sorting out the differences between the packages and understanding what you are actually paying for can be confusing. Most cruisers want to know what exactly they're getting with each drink package and whether or not the packages will save them money.

If you're considering a Holland America drink package for your next cruise, here's everything you need to know before making your purchase.

What's included in Holland America drink packages?

Holland America alcohol packages aren't the only drink packages available. The line offers two nonalcoholic packages and two options with alcoholic beverages.

All packages allow you to order beverages at most bars, restaurants, entertainment venues and poolside. Exceptions include self-serve draft beer where available and drinks in the Chocolate Seduction and Honor Bar. Packages do not include drinks consumed from in-cabin minibars, ordered from room service or purchased on Half Moon Cay. All packages except the Coca-Cola package have quantity limits.

Coca-Cola package

Sodas are not included in your cruise fare, and passengers may not bring them on board. That leaves soda drinkers with the choice to buy a beverage package, pay per drink or get their soft drink fix in ports of call.

The Coca-Cola package covers fountain drinks from bars and bar servers on all ships in the fleet. Three ships — Koningsdam, Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam — have Coca-Cola Freestyle fountain machines that allow you to mix and match your flavors at will. Canned soft drinks are not included in the package, but fountain drinks are unlimited.

You might consider this package if you're the person who relies on soft drinks to quench your thirst throughout the day and drink few, if any, cocktails, mocktails, beer, wine or spirits. It works great for tweens and teens who regularly drink soda.

Quench package

The Quench package includes unlimited fountain soft drinks and up to 15 specialty coffees, bottled water (still and sparkling), fresh juices or mocktails per day.

With this package, you can order your favorite coffee each morning at Explorations Café, drink sodas with your lunch, chill with a frozen mocktail by the pool in the afternoon and grab bottled water before you head out on a day of exploring in port— all without worrying about the individual cost.

Quench would be the Holland America drink package for someone who dives into the vacation spirit with beverage treats throughout the day and evening, but mostly enjoys them sans alcohol.

Signature beverage package

The Signature beverage package is the mainstay Holland America alcohol package. It covers beer, wine, spirits and cocktails priced under $11, plus everything from the Quench package. There is a 15-drink limit, whether alcoholic or non, not counting fountain soft drinks.

You can order a drink with a price higher than the $11 maximum and will be charged only the price difference plus gratuity.

The Signature package satisfies the beverage needs of most cruisers. Unless you prefer top-shelf liquor, you'll be fine with this package. Even the quantity limit of 15 drinks takes care of the average cruiser. If you party into the wee hours of the night, you'd have to order a drink from the package every hour and a half almost around the clock to use all 15.

All adults of legal drinking age within a cabin must buy the same alcoholic drink package. If one person does not drink, they can be granted special permission to buy only the Quench package.

Elite beverage package

For those who want to eliminate some of the limits on their drink package, Elite is the way to go. This package includes everything from the earlier packages but raises the price limit to $15 per drink. That covers premium beer, wine and spirits.

The daily limit is also removed for nonalcoholic drinks. That means you can drink all the fountain drinks, specialty coffee, bottled water and mocktails you want without touching your 15-drink limit on alcoholic beverages, which for most cruisers, means you're not likely to reach the limit at all.

What does a Holland America drink package cost?

Here are the standard Holland America drink package prices:

Coca-Cola package : $9.44 per person, per day ($8 plus an 18% gratuity) for unlimited fountain sodas, including from Freestyle machines on select ships

Quench package: $21.18 per person, per day ($17.95 plus an 18% gratuity) for unlimited fountain sodas and up to 15 nonalcoholic drinks per day

Signature beverage package: $64.84 per person, per day ($54.95 plus an 18% gratuity) for unlimited fountain sodas and up to 15 alcoholic or nonalcoholic drinks up to $11 each

Elite beverage package: $70.74 per person, per day ($59.95 plus an 18% gratuity) for unlimited fountain sodas, unlimited nonalcoholic beverages and up to 15 alcoholic drinks up to $15 each

I was hard-pressed to find any discounts off the advertised Holland America drink package prices. Even in the midst of Black Friday sales, the only beverage-related discount I found was for the line's Have It All package that upgrades your cruise fare to a more inclusive experience by bundling the Signature beverage package with Wi-Fi, specialty dining and shore excursion credit (with the last two based on the length of the cruise).

It should be noted, however, that the Holland America website states drink package pricing as "starting at." That would imply that the prices could increase from time to time, though I could not find anyone who said they had paid more than the posted prices.

Drink discounts beyond the drink packages

Before you settle on a drink package, know that it's not your only option for discounted alcohol or inclusive pricing. Holland America offers some add-on items that can be used to supplement or entirely replace a drink package under certain circumstances.

The first is an option to purchase a bundle of wines by the bottle called The Sommelier Suite. You can choose from three different wine lists at three different price points. You can then opt to buy four, six or eight bottles from your preferred list.

Prices start at $119 for a four-bottle package on the lowest-priced list and go as high as $329 for eight bottles on the highest-priced list. These prices are advertised as "up to 25 percent off" the menu price before the 18% gratuity.

Frequent cruisers who are members of Holland America's Mariner Society are offered a 25% discount on the Sommelier Suite packages after 75 cruise days and 50% off after 200 cruise days. Even without the Mariner discounts, the package price makes sense for anyone who enjoys wine on multiple nights of their cruise. You can drink the bottles in any restaurant, share them with friends and even take them to your cabin.

The final alternative to beverage packages on Holland America is to purchase pay-as-you-go drink cards. These are not discounted but offer the ability to control drink spending or simplify drink accounting by pre-purchasing what is essentially a drink debit card. Funds left on the card at the end of the cruise are refundable to your onboard account.

Holland America cruisers I found on social media report buying the drink cards with cruise line gift cards bought at a 10% discount at some grocery stores and websites, essentially gaining a 10% discount on the drinks they purchase with the drink card. (By the same token, you could use the discounted gift cards to buy your standard drink package, as well.)

You can also purchase gift cards with credit cards, such as the American Express® Gold Card , that give you extra points per dollar spent at grocery stores to get additional value from your purchase.

Is a drink package worth it on your Holland America cruise?

Now that you have the facts, it's time to decide if the packages are worth the price. Remember that free drinks on board include drip coffee, hot and iced tea, water, lemonade, milk and punch, available at meals and drink stations. The ship's water is drinkable, and you can bring a refillable water bottle, which is particularly useful on port excursions.

Fountain soft drinks ordered from a bar are cheap on Holland America at $2.50 (plus tip) each, but that's for a small glass. Serious soda drinkers (me included) could suck down a couple of these in a flash on a hot day in the Caribbean.

Since Holland America does not allow even canned soft drinks to be brought on board at embarkation, this package price seems easy to match for those who regularly drink one or more large sodas at home, especially when cruising in a warm destination. On the three ships offering Freestyle machines, the purchase is definitely a no-brainer.

This is my favorite package for making me feel like I'm really on a cruise vacation. I'm a lightweight drinker when it comes to alcoholic drinks, but I can slurp frozen mocktails (which average around $8 each) all day long on a sea day.

Since the package also includes unlimited soft drinks, you can have soda with your hamburger at lunch, followed by a virgin mudslide for dessert if that's what makes you happy. Add in the bottled water, which is the only part of any drink package you can take with you to Half Moon Cay, and it all starts to look quite convenient.

If you drink one specialty coffee per day at around $4.50, two or three of the skimpy fountain sodas, and at least one mocktail per day, you'll top the $17.95 package price without even counting the bottled water, which can be as high as $4.50 for sparkling brands.

Holland America's main alcohol package packs in quite a bit for the money, allowing you to enjoy a nice combination of nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks. At $54.95, if you don't drink anything but the $11 drinks allowed by the package, you'd need to drink five per day to break even.

But factor in a specialty coffee every morning, some bottled water on port days and a soda now and then, and your break-even alcoholic drink tally drops to three or four. If that looks like your typical cruise consumption, you'll at least break even on this package.

The best way to get this package, however, might be by purchasing what Holland America calls the Have It All package , which includes not only the drink package, but Surf Wi-Fi, shore excursion credit ranging from $100 for a six- to nine-night sailing up to $300 for cruises longer than 21 nights, and at least one specialty dining night. It is not available on every cruise, but when it is, the $55 price per person, per day is an incredible bargain, essentially throwing in freebies on top of the beverage package.

This package bumps up the price by a mere $5 per day over the Signature package, so if you prefer premium alcohol in your cocktails, or if the beer and wine on the Elite list are more to your liking, you'll cover the difference with just a handful of drinks. It's your vacation, why not splurge a little, right?

I found cruisers on social media who said you can upgrade to the Elite package from the Signature bought within the Have It All package. They said as long as nobody in the cabin has ordered a drink on the Signature Package, it can be upgraded at embarkation at any bar.

Is a Holland America beverage package right for you?

Drink packages are a personal preference. You can certainly cruise with Holland America without one, combining drinks included in the cruise fare with a pay-as-you-drink routine for everything else. If that's what you are most comfortable with, you can easily keep an eye on your drink expenditures using the cruise line app or checking your daily expenses on the in-room interactive TV screen.

You can also earn a discount by buying bottled wine packages or paying with discounted Holland America gift cards.

If, however, you prefer to pay for as much of your cruise experience upfront as possible and not worry about the spending once you are on board, the package that most closely matches your drinking habits will be the one that makes your cruise most enjoyable.

Drink packages allow you to pay once and forget about the price of each individual glass. Even the tipping is bundled into the purchase price for you, though you can add additional tips if you wish.

The bottom line is that Holland America drink packages, while not designed to save you a fortune, certainly allow you to enjoy beverages on your cruise in an all-inclusive fashion if that's the vacation experience you'd prefer.

5 Of The Best Ways To Get Free Alcoholic Beverages While On A Cruise

The only thing better than a cold beer is a free cold beer, and the only thing that beats that is a free cold beer enjoyed on a boat. However, scoring free drinks on cruises is not easy. Alcohol sales make up a large part of most cruise companies' overall revenue, and they know it. You'll have to think, plan, strategize, and maybe even gamble to get your fill of free drinks on the high seas. 

Gameplanning getting free booze onboard starts while deciding what to pack for your cruise vacation . While it doesn't count as one of our tips because it's not free, you might be surprised to find out that some cruises will allow you to bring a bottle or two onboard with you. (Typically, champagne or wine only.) While two bottles of wine aren't enough to get you through a week-long cruise, it's a great way to supplement some of the other tips on our list.  

As you're about to find out, there's no such thing as a free lunch or free beverages on a cruise. You'll always have to spend something. Our goal is to shift the currency exchange away from money and towards loyalty, enthusiasm, or (mostly) spending your time. But hey, this is a vacation, after all. You'll have more free time on a cruise than you normally do, and being at the right places at the right time can often be your ticket to a boozy afternoon on the starboard side.

Happy hour specials + happy bartenders = free beer

If you're on board to drink, the first thing you should do after unpacking is split up your crew and send missionaries to every single onboard bar. The mission: Create an all-encompassing list of cruise ship happy hours. Not only are these great ways to save some money on drinks at key moments but they can also be used to stock your stateroom mini-fridge with free drinks down the line. The ultimate goal is to find a 2-for-1 special and ask for your second drink to be served unopened. Slide the free drink in your pocket and transport it back to your room to enjoy it later.

The most successful passengers have reported buying an entire case of beer at a 2-for-1 rate, reducing per-beer costs to less than $3. That's an extreme case of happy hour success, but even on a smaller scale, exploiting this special today can help you drink for free tomorrow. To make the most of these happy hour deals, you should build a slight rapport with your bartenders. Savvy passengers who've sailed the seas a time or two will quickly tell you that a few bucks in the right hands can go a long way. You should always be polite and tip your waitstaff, but think of this as an extra incentive. Tipping waiters, bartenders, or anyone who is frequently within 6 feet of happy hour specials can pay off in generous pours and greatly discounted alcoholic beverages. 

Constantly monitor daily activities

True cruise boozehounds should start every day with a cup of coffee and the daily cruise planner, inspecting opportunities to win bottles or enjoy a doorbuster glass of bubbly. Every day aboard a cruise ship brings special events and activities. Smart organizers and businesses that operate on deck know that the best way to build up interest in their event is by offering free drinks. Look for contests and activities where there may be prizes awarded, or look for events that want you to buy things. 

Perhaps the most famous event with free booze is a cruise ship art auction. The right auction might be your ticket to a few glasses of free champagne as long as you're willing to hang out in the room and look interested. Don't feel bad about showing up to these events with confidence and accepting a glass, even with no intention of bringing home a Monet. Per the New York Times , these art dealers are notorious for sketchy business practices, so drink up and get out of there.

The other main ticket to free booze in your cruise planner is competitions and activities with bubbly as a prize. People often cite too much time at sea as one of the reasons to avoid taking cruises , so operators look to spruce things up with activities. Look for more adult-themed contests, like a newlywed game or gameshow-style events, for your best chances of scoring a bottle as a prize.

Some cruises give you free booze while you gamble

Because if there's anything that goes well together, it's drinking and gambling. Several cruise lines will provide drink deals if you spend enough time at the table. One of the most prolific options for this is Celebrity Cruise Lines. All levels of the company's free-to-join Blue Chip Club include free drinks as long as you're actively gambling. Most of the other major companies will require you to reach a certain status level within the casino before you drink freely, but if you gamble enough aboard, they'll all start giving you free drinks soon enough. 

Of course, for this tip to really qualify as free, you'll have to start winning hands. And even though a cruise line is not a home, the idiom still applies here: If you gamble long enough, the house always wins. So, unless you were already planning on taking a cruise specifically for gambling, you're probably going to save money in the long haul by just buying a drinks package rather than hoping to bet your way to free rum and cokes. Still, if you're already searching for a cruise line with a casino, make sure your casino of choice offers free drinks. 

If you're a seasoned gambler, many major cruise carriers have programs to entice you onboard with discounts, upgrades, and even free drink packages. Before you're onboard, start the games by filling out a casino player inquiry and seeing what kinds of offers the ships present.

Shop around while booking your cruise

Unless there is one specific cruise you've been itching to take, it can pay to be flexible when picking your next vacation. If you search long enough, you might be able to find a deal that will throw on free drinks when you book your trip, most often in the form of discounted access to cruise drink packages. 

Typically, we advise thinking twice before buying a cruise drink package . It makes sense for certain voyages, but it'll add up to a waste of money on others (read: Most of them). Come up with a rough estimate of the number of drinks you'll want daily, find out how much those drinks cost on your cruise, and then compare that answer with the daily cost of a cruise drink package. Don't forget to factor in gratuity, which is typically not mentioned in the package's initial cost. At full price, cruise drink packages can reach $50-100 per day, but finding the right deal could pull your drinking costs down into the realm of possibility. 

The most famous example is Norwegian Cruise Line's Free At Sea promotion, which offers an unlimited open bar with certain voyage purchases. Carnival's Cheers! Package rarely goes on sale, but sometimes you can catch Royal Caribbean's Deluxe Beverage Package for up to 45% off.Find Facebook groups and websites dedicated to cruise deals and keep a Google alert activated for your preferred drink packages; these sales don't stick around for long.

Stick to one cruise operator

The best way to get free alcoholic beverages on a cruise is loyalty. If you expect to spend your next decade cruising, pick one company and book with them every time. The more you cruise with one provider, the more benefits you reap. Some operators will start offering you a free glass to celebrate on your second trip. Book long enough, and you'll gain access to cocktail parties or even receive daily drink vouchers. The highest level of Royal Carribean's Crown and Anchor Society provides six free daily drinks.

The king of all loyalty offers is Royal Caribbean's $100,000 golden, diamond-encrusted chalice, which is a real thing (pictured) and comes with unlimited drinks for life. There's a catch here, though — the cup can only be filled with drinks that cost less than $14. Eventually, there might be none of those left, so drink up while you can. To decide if it's worth it, find the loyalty offer you want the most and figure out how many drinks it will cost before it pays off. In the case of the goblet, at 14 bucks a drink, it will cost you (roughly) 7,142 drinks to make up the price. Drinks number 7,143 and onward are on the house. 

For best results, show loyalty both to cruise operators and your cruise travel agent. They've been known to show loyal customers gratitude with bottles of wine waiting in staterooms and other perks that will lead to cheaper booze cruises.

Royal Caribbean alcohol policy

According to the Royal Caribbean rules on drinking, the drinking age minimum for alcoholic beverages is 21 years of age on all cruises departing from North America. At the RCI's discretion, the drinking age limit can be lowered to 18 on cruises departing from ports in South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand) where the legal drinking age is 18. As on other cruise lines, RCI reserves the right to revoke/restrict the drinking privileges of any passenger (regardless of age). Also, RCI retains the right to raise the minimum drinking age (for alcohol consumption) on any cruise when local laws require such modification.

In June 2018, RCI ship bars started to serve cocktails with optional plastic straws (not by default) - a new policy aiming to reduce sea pollution. "Why no straws?" signs at onboard bars fleetwide now indicate that drink orders will not automatically receive a straw, but only upon request. Since 2022, all straws are recyclable.

To celebrate the company's 50th anniversary, in 2019 RCI installed fleetwide Coca-Cola Freestyle machines (1 per ship) that serve a selection of sodas including RCI's brand "Royal Berry Blast" (Sprite, Sprite Zero).

Bringing alcohol on RCI ships

The RCI policy rules for bringing alcohol on voyages state:

• bringing liquor/beer on Royal Caribbean on embarkation is strictly forbidden - not allowed. Ship security may inspect your luggage and liquid containers (soda and water bottles, mouthwash, etc). If found, the booze will be confiscated, stored and returned at the end of the voyage. Passengers under 21 wouldn't be getting any of their smuggled alcohol back. If a passenger violates the Royal Caribbean alcohol policy, the line's Guest Conduct Policy may be enforced, which also includes forcible disembarkation or not allowing boarding - at your own expense. The list of possible violations, besides any attempts to conceal alcohol at security/luggage checkpoints, also includes over-alcohol-consuming behavior, providing alcohol to minors (21- yo), demonstration of irresponsible behavior on board.
• bringing wine on Royal Caribbean (on embarkation day only). You are allowed to bring max 2 wine/Champagne bottles per cabin (bottle size 750ml or smaller). Remember - bottles must retain the original seal of the manufacturer and not to look tampered with.
• buying alcohol on Royal Caribbean. If you purchase alcohol in port or in the duty-free shop on board, they will hold it until the end (the last day) of the cruise.

Note: All passengers must comply with TSA (Transportation Security Administration) guidelines for liquids' transportation.

NEW "bring your own wine onboard" policy (cruise ship corkage fee)

By the RCI's new wine policy, If you want to drink your own wine and champagne (brought on board the ship) in public spaces (bars and restaurants), a USD 15 corkage fee per bottle will be applied to your bill.

• If a passenger received a bottle of wine/champagne purchased from Gift and Gear selection, a corkage fee will not be applied when that wine/champagne is consumed in public areas.
• Cruise passengers are allowed to bring personal wine/champagne on the ship on embarkation day only. The quantity is limited to two bottles per stateroom (2x 750 ml). These (2 per cabin) bottles can be consumed in the stateroom with no corkage fee applied.
• However, RCI's wine corkage fee rule is rarely enforced/ infrequently charged.
• Note: This policy was officially removed in 2014 Fall (back then, corkage fee was USD 25 per bottle), but reappeared in early June 2017. Unlike the old (pre-2014) onboard wine policy, currently, RCI doesn't apply corkage fees to wine/champagne purchased on the ship.

NEW non-alcoholic beverage policy

Since September 2018, RCI's updated beverage policy allows passengers to bring their own non-alcoholic drinks on the ship.

Non-alcoholic beverages must be in carry-on or hand luggage (not in checked bags). The new policy allows bringing only small quantities and only on embarkation day (at homeports). The max allowed amount is 12x (twelve) 17oz cans/bottles per cabin. Also permitted by the new policy are specialized beverages (distilled water and milk).

Which drinks are free on Royal Caribbean?

(free drinks by the RCI's loyalty program "Crown and Anchor")

Diamond+ members (passengers with 25+ RCI cruises) and guests booked in a Grand Suite or higher category have access to a nightly self-service free bar. This deal is on all RCI ships of the following classes - Radiance, Voyager, Freedom, Oasis and the new Quantum-class ships.

On RCI ships of the Freedom, Oasis, and Quantum-class, Diamond members (with 10-24 RCI cruises) have exclusive access to the Diamond Lounge, where beer, wine (red/white/Champagne), mixed drinks and soda are for free.

Free alcohol and drinks are also available at the onboard art auctions and past-guest gatherings.

How much are drinks on Royal Caribbean?

Note (limited offerings): Periodically, RCI feature beers unique to itinerary or of special interest. Ask your server for what's currently available on your sailing. The RCI's beer menus in onboard pubs, like "Hoof and Claw", and "Wig and Gavel", have the most expanded beer lists, offering 16- or 20oz specialty beers, such as Murphy's Irish Stout, Newcastle Brown Ale, Boddingtons.

In 2022, the price of domestic beers is US$7.50, for import beers - $8.

In 2021, RCI added 6 new island-themed cocktails ($13) to the fleetwide beverage menu - Papa Jac (Puerto Rico), Rum Punch (Barbados), Planter's Punch (Jamaica), The Painkiller (BVI), Goombay Smash (Bahamas), Dark 'n Stormy (Bermuda).

Note: In the following table all listed drinks (by RCI's cocktail drink menus) are with prices per glass. 18% gratuity is added to the beverage's cost automatically.

COFFEE drinks prices

RCI offers on its largest (Oasis-class) ships Starbucks coffee beverages.

On RCI ships without dedicated Starbucks kiosks (all excepting the Oasis-class), the line's unlimited drink packages "Royal Replenish" and "Ultimate" (all-inclusive) can be used for paying Starbucks beverages. Those ships serve Starbucks coffee beverages at the "Cafe Promenade" lounge bar (former Latte-tudes).

• Quantum-class ships serve Starbucks coffee drinks at the "La Patisserie" bar.
• Starbucks gift cards and the app can also be used for payment.
• Starbucks coffee cards are available for purchase on select ships, and for use at "Starbucks at Sea" locations only (see above). The Starbucks coffee card includes 15 Starbucks beverages for USD 30 per card. Its value is for the current cruise only. The card is shareable.

NON-ALCOHOLIC drinks prices

Drink package policy

RCI cruise ship passengers should know about the line's drink package policy the following:

• Royal Caribbean drink packages are not shareable or transferable.
• When ordering a beverage package on the ship, guests must present their SeaPass card when showing the package sticker to waiters.
• Packages do not include in-room drink purchases, or mini-bar drinks, including bottled water, canned soft drinks, bottled juices, beers.

RCI drink packages - prices and inclusions

IMPORTANT: Prices shown below are per person, per day. These package deals are available on RCI cruises with duration 3 nights or longer.

In September 2015 RCI presented the company's new self-serve beer program on Freedom of the Seas . Holders of the RCI Ultimate, Premium and Select drink packages can already serve themselves Stella Artois beer. Ship's self-serve machines are located around the pool deck and in Windjammer buffet. All package-holders can make their purchases via a card that is swiped at the machines. The machines have built-in time limits to ensure no continuous pouring.

For beers different than Stella Artois or outside Windjammer Buffet and pool deck, package-holders have to see a bartender.

At the end of 2015, RCI started testing one-day beverage packages and a 10-drink punch card onboard its cruise ships. RCI vessels have been given the option to test various beverage package offerings. The decision of which program to feature, if any, is made by the ship. For example, a one-day beverage package on Enchantment of the Seas was offered for USD 65 per person and included unlimited cocktails, select glasses of wine, beer, as well as bottled water, specialty coffees, and juices. These offerings are tests and might/might not be rolled out in the near future.

"Sip Tour Brunch" combines a Chef-led Galley tour (ship's kitchen) with unlimited champagne. The 2,5-hours, adults-only activity also includes a Main Dining Room brunch with unlimited sparkling wine. Closed-toe shoes are required.

Bottled alcohol packages

In addition to the unlimited alcohol packages, RCI offers 2 packages available for in-cabin consumption. They can be purchased at the onboard Royal Gifts shop and each combines Coca-Cola products with a bottle of liquor.

• "Bacardi Gold plus Coca-Cola" package costs USD 40 and includes one bottle of Bacardi Gold (Puerto Rico manufactured rum, 375 ml) combined with four Coca-Cola cans.
• "Bombay Sapphire plus Tonic" package costs USD 43 and includes one bottle of Bombay Sapphire (Laverstoke Mill, Hampshire UK manufactured gin, 375 ml) combined with four Tonic water cans.
• The list of RCI ships currently selling these new bottled alcohol packages includes Explorer, Legend, Mariner, Ovation, Quantum, Radiance, Splendour, Vision and Voyager.

THE Olympics has finished up with a dazzling closing ceremony!

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise performed an incredible stunt - leaping from the top of the Stade de France - as the Games was handed over to next host, Los Angeles.

Over the past fortnight, the likes of Keely Hodgkinson, Tom Pidcock and Alex Yee won gold for GB while Katarina Johnson-Thompson , Josh Kerr and Adam Peaty picked up agonising silver medals in a heroic campaign.

In total, Team GB picked up 65 medals - one more than in Tokyo three years ago.

While USA toped the medal table ahead of China after a thrilling final day.

Over to you Los Angeles

Well that is it for the Paris 2024 Olympic games.

Now we start the build-up for LA 2028.

Los Angeles had laid a marker this evening, we are expecting big things.

Paris 2024 Olympics ended

As the games are officially announced as over, an artist sings an apt version of 'My Way'.

Paris, it has been emotional.

There have been highs and lows as ever in sport but this has been a thoroughly enjoyable Olympic games.

Bonne nuit Paris.

USA raising the bar already

Firstly we had Red Hot Chillip Peppers perform.

That was quickly followed by Billy Eilish.

Then when you thought the bar could not be raised, Snoop Dogg has appeared to sing 'Drop it Like it's Hot'.

Now Dr Dre has rocked up for a duet with him.

Torch passed on to Los Angeles

Tom Cruise collects an Olympic flag in the Stade de France and drives off on a motorbike with it through the streets of Paris.

Driving straight onto a plane conveniently parked on a runway with its back door open as he seamlessly rides onto it.

Miraculously, within seconds, the plane is flying over Los Angeles and Tom Cruise jumps out of the plane.

He descends to earth, creating the Olympic rings on the Hollywood sign.

Cut to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers playing on a beach.

How very Mission Impossible this all was.

American national anthem plays

H.E.R. or as she is also known, Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, is now singing the Star-Spangled Banner.

Well obviously it is not a normal version, there are electric guitars and rock solos involved.

Either way, the crowd show their appreciation.

Nothing more the French like than the American national anthem.

Look out, here comes Tom Cruise from the roof.

We are not quite sure what he is planning to do yet but Tom Cruise seems to be gearing up for something in the Stade de France.

His 'Mission Impossible' could be seeing an end to this ceremony.

You know what they say, it isn't an Olympics unless a 62-year-old actor is seen suspended from a wire somewhere in the stadium.

Olympic committee have their say

The organisers now are on stage thanking everyone from the fans to the taxi drivers who transported them around.

At this rate we may have to go straight from this closing ceremony straight to the first event in Los Angeles.

The short version of what is being said is that France really enjoyed hosting these games and thanks you all for watching.

Closing ceremony nears completion

As Phoenix finish their set on stage, the Paris 2024 Olympics near their close.

It has been 16 days of high-octane action, with the exception of the opening ceremony where I had to shave three times before it ended.

Paris waited 100 years for the games to return and they certainly did themselves proud.

Five rings to rule them all

We now have Phoenix, a French Indie-Rock band playing.

Am hoping at least one of the organisers knows what is going on here.

All the competitors seem to be dancing to the music, so we know the booze is flowing at least.

He may not be Billy Joel but the guy can play.

If anyone had 'man plays piano suspended above his head' on their game of Olympics closing ceremony bingo, you win.

The athletes seem to be enjoying themselves anyway.

It took a while for anyone to work out what was going on but it is all finally coming together.

The five rings of the Olympic games have been arranged in the air with the Golden Voyager saluting them.

As fireworks explode at the top of the Stade de France to huge cheers.

From what we have seen of the opening and now closing ceremony, the French have really gone for it on the artistic front.

While encompassing the history of the games, they have tried to make it into an Olympic opera of sorts.

This would really not be a good time for any of the spectators to have eaten some mushrooms from questionable sources.

Now somebody is playing a piano hanging above his head like some Christmas mistletoe.

You really could not make this stuff up.

Golden Voyager for all to see

Unless you had a running commentary for this in your native language, you would struggle to know what is going on in front of you in the stadium.

It is alll based around how the games originated, legends and goddesses.

It was claimed that the games would move from Athens to different countries, not just around the world, but the universe.

That could be an interesting trip away for some of the athletes.

Legends as far as the eye can see

This ceremony is not just about the athletes from these games.

Sebastian Coe, now President of World Athletics, acknowledges the fans.

The real showpiece is about to start now....

Fans enjoy parade of competitors

The spectators who have enjoyed every sport in these games continue to show their appreciation for the athletes.

In particular, the hosts get a standing ovation from the home support.

It has been a while since some of these flags have been raised to the backdrop of the Paris skyline.

Medals still being dished out

The marathon runners are being awarded their medals in the middle of this closing ceremony which seems weird.

How long did it take them to finish?

Either way they seem overjoyed with their achievements.

Some of the medals don't seem as they appeared in the listing that evidently spurred the organisers to purchase a job lot for the games.

Classic Temu vibes, nothing ever appears as it seems.

Great Britain stars with a difference

As the British athletes do their lap of celebration, they are all wearing what appear to be Hawaiian shirts.

Made up of the emblems of the collective nations, it certainly is a colourful look.

It looks like a huge group of holiday reps looking for their buses outside the airport arrivals exit.

Let's hope they make everyone do shots now.

American handover in progress

Now is the time for America to accept the baton, so to speak, for the next Olympics.

The 2028 Olympic games will be coming to us from Los Angeles.

It will be a big period for USA as they also will be hosting the next World Cup too.

Fans lapping up atmosphere

Every nation seems to be represented in and around the stadium too.

The Paris 2024 Olympics closing ceremony is certainly the place to be.

It just goes to show what a worldwide pull these games have had.

There is not a spare seat in sight as the 2024 Paris Olympics come to a close.

The athletes who excelled show off their medals to fans.

Best to be careful with those, as we have seen this week that coating is likely drop off like someone who has digested a large amount of the water from the River Seine.

As they enjoy the atmosphere many are opting to live stream their walk around the arena.

There are more phones on show than a Taylor Swift concert.

Let's hope the stadium has a good wi-fi connection.

The pull of these games seems to attract everyone, although a few scalpers have been spotted with tickets in such short supply.

From Paris with love

Bryony Page and Alex Yee lead the way for Team GB.

The pair spoke about how much it meant to them to be asked to do this job for their country.

This certainly will be a games to remember for both athletes.

All the gla-bearers are then followed by all the participating athletes in the Olympics.

We are not sure where Leon Marchand has gone with that flame, hopefully for his sake, he is not now expected to swim to Los Angeles with it.

As has been the case for the entire games, he receives a huge cheer only bettered when allied troops liberated the country from Germany's grasp.

The closing ceremony was kicked-off by a brilliant rendition of a French song by artist Zaho de Sagazan.

During a 35-minute exclusive jailhouse interview this week with The Post, the self-centered Steven Schwally didn’t bring up Officer Emilia Rennhack and the three salon workers that he mowed down in the June 28 incident — until a reporter finally asked what he would say to the grieving families if given the chance.

After first quizzing a reporter on how she would answer the question, Schwally, 64, said he would tell them he was “sorry” for the harm he caused.

He quickly added: “I don’t like to think about it.”

The three-year marine veteran who is twice divorced, unemployed and homeless said he remembers first responders dragging him out of the driver’s side window of his Chevrolet Traverse after he crashed it into Hawaii Nail & Spa in Deer Park, and recalls seeing how smashed up his vehicle was — but nothing else.

Though he pleaded not guilty when he was indicted on four counts of second-degree murder and other charges, Schwally told The Post he was “guilty” during the interview at Riverhead Correctional Facility, where he is being held on $1 million bail.

“My goose is cooked,” whined Schwally, who wore a yellow prison jumpsuit and had a walker nearby, about his life. “It’s over for me.”

Schwally admitted to The Post that he’s an alcoholic. He is believed to have guzzled a couple bottles of Montebello Long Island Iced Tea before the shocking incident, which resulted in nine others hurt.

He said his days on the outside generally consist of waking up, buying some booze, driving around locally and stopping to make phone calls. 

Schwally told police he downed 18 beers and stopped drinking at around 3 a.m. the day of the crash, authorities have said.

Schwally spent a week in the hospital in the immediate aftermath, and griped that he’d been heavily medicated by jail staff and couldn’t sleep.

Schwally insisted he isn’t “always drunk,” and really didn’t begin drinking until around 25 years ago.

Schwally was  hit with a DWI charge  in Dix Hills, NY, in 2013 when he smashed into a mailbox. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years of probation.

Families of the Hawaii Nail & Spa victims either declined to comment or weren’t immediately reachable.
