Surrounded by a sea of vineyards, filled with churches, and close to plenty of small villages that lie far off the beaten tourist track, no doubt you’ll have heard of Nuits-Saint-Georges if you’re a wine drinker. And for those who are looking for the activities beyond the vin ? Well, here’s your complete guide to the best things to do in Nuits-Saint-George .
Introducing Nuits-Saint-Georges, the gateway to the Route des Grands Crus
Route des grands crus: nuits-saint-georges, #1 go wine tasting, #2 musée de nuits-saint-georges, #3 beffroi (belfry) de nuits-st-georges, #4 le cassisium, #5 église saint-symphorien de nuits-saint-georges (church of saint symphorien), #6 walk to vosne-romanée, how to visit nuits-saint-georges, what is the population of nuits st georges, what are the best free things to do in nuits saint georges, how long do you need in nuits-saint-georges, is nuits-saint-georges safe to visit, enjoyed reading about the best things to do in nuits-saint-georges pin it now, read it again later:.
Now home to a population of around five and a half thousand residents, the area surrounding Nuits-Saint-Georges has been inhabited since Gallo-Roman times.
Even back then, grapes would have been grown in the rich and fertile soil so as to create wines which would then be utilised throughout Roman Gaul and beyond.
In more modern times, the area owes much of its wine growing success thanks to the enterprising of Cistercian monks in the region. Nearby Cîteaux Abbey was founded in 1098.
From there, the monks went on to shape the vineyards of Burgundy as we know them today. Even to this day, hospitals in the area (such as that of Beaune) hold annual wine auctions, with the profits going towards charitable causes.
So iconic was the wine from Cotes de Nuits, that the Sun King, AKA Louis XIV who transformed the Versailles Palace into the monumental structure as we know it today, was even recommended the wine from Nuits-St-George for its ‘medicinal’ qualities!
If you’ve spent any time reading about the Route des Grands Crus, a UNESCO world heritage wine route that snakes its way through the Burgundy countryside, then you’ll know that Nuits-St-Georges is one of the most important stops en route.
Passing through the Côtes de Nuits vineyards that surround the town of the same name, the route encompasses over thirty villages between Dijon and Beaune and then on to Santenay.
What makes the wines of Burgundy (or Bourgogne as it is so-called in French) so special are the ‘climats,’ which is incidentally a term unique to the French region of Burgundy itself.
These ‘climats’ are small plots of land that are separated by dry stone walls, hedges, and rivers. Usually marked by a simple cross or set of imposing gates, each of these areas is owned by different viticulturists. These mini microclimates each produce their own special variety of wine in an area that’s been carefully designated over the centuries.
Truth be told, the most famous of all the vineyards close to Nuits-St-Georges is that of Romanée-Conti, which produces the most expensive wine in the world!
While admiring the vineyards, be sure to be on the lookout for the Cabotes , small limestone buildings that house vine growing tools and provide shade from the relentless sun.
One of the other interesting thing to note about visiting Burgundy is that the vineyards change dramatically in colour and shape throughout the year due to their foliage (or lack thereof).
While the vines are a vibrant green in the summer, they transform into golden hues in the autumn and are completely barren in the winter. This means that no two visits to Nuits-St-Georges will ever be the same.
Best things to do in Nuits-Saint-Georges
Truth be told, the bread and butter of tourism in Nuits-St-Georges comes in the form of the plethora of wine tasting experiences to be had in and around the town.
Whether it’s heading to a local vineyard, visiting a bar in the town centre, or making the half-hour walk to Vosne-Romanée, this area is absolutely full of L’œnotourisme (wine tourism) opportunities!
The town’s museum is free to visit thanks to the town’s philosophy that history and museums should be accessible to all. Filled with Roman artefacts, medieval objects, and telling the history of the town’s past, as well as that of the wider Burgundy region, you can easily while away several hours wandering around this cultural space. Housed within a former wine cellar, next door you’ll find the town’s library.
Close to the tourist office and in a corner of the main town square, the rather impressive belfry in the heart of the village and was built in 1610. Comprised of two storeys and complete with a cellar, the belfry has been listed as a historic monument since1947. Now surrounded by a predominantly pedestrianised area, the bell tower has since become a symbol of the town.
Cassis is the French word for ‘blackcurrant’ and is the primary ingredient for Crème de Cassis, an alcoholic liqueur that’s famously produced in the region.
While you can always sip on a kir (a French cocktail made of wine and cassis) in any of the town’s bars, to get to know more about the history of the drink and sample some for yourself, you simply must head to Le Cassisium!
Located close to the train station, a kilometre or so away from the town centre, Cassis products (only liquids; alcoholic beverages and fruits syrups) have been produced at the Cassissium since 1923.
Since 2001, a museum space has been located on site, providing another insight into the blackcurrant world. Split into four distinct sections, there’s a cinema area, a museum area, the chance to tour the factory with a guide, and best of all, plenty of Crème de Cassis tasting options.
According to a passage of writing attributed to St Benignus of Dijon, Saint-Symphorian was a Christian saint who was converted to the faith by St Benignus ( whose tomb can now be visited in Dijon ) .
Dating all the way back to the 13th-century, the church of Saint Symphorien itself is the beautiful blend of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles that are so synonymous with the region.
Highlights of this structure include a sheltered porch from the 17th-century and a rather rare example of a wooden lectern that’s survived from the 15th-century!
Head to the nearby square just off Rue Charmottes in the springtime and it’s here where you’ll find some of the more beautiful cherry blossoms that Nuits-St-Georges has to offer.
At just two kilometres away, through the vines, and along a relatively flat road, the pretty village of Vosne-Romanée is dedicated almost entirely to wine! Filled with wine vendors, the village may only have a population of just a few hundred but is still most definitely a visit.
Home to many wine houses that date all the way back to the 16th-century, wander down a back street out of the village and you’ll soon stumble upon the one and only vineyard of Romanée-Conti!
The vineyard is famed for selling the most expensive wine in the world, with a single bottle selling for up to around $10,000 each.
While the town can obviously be visited as a destination in its own right, if you’re short on time then you might consider a visit to Nuits St Georges as a day trip from Dijon or the wine city of Beaune .
Both cities are less than half an hour away and trains stop on a regular basis throughout the day and well into the evening. If you’re looking to learn a little more about wine prior to your visit, then I recommend purchasing a book like this one .
Though it’s not absolutely necessary to know anything about vin before visiting Bourgogne, a little knowledge will certainly help you understand your preferences when selecting where you should go wine tasting and what you should purchase!
Easy to reach by car, train, or local bus (the bus being, by far, the cheapest option) , if you want to leave the logistics to someone else, then a guided tour may well be the thing to go for.
For example, this Burgundy full day wine tour from Beaune includes a visit to a Domaine in the Nuits-Saint-George area, a visit to Clos Vougeot, as well as another wine tasting opportunity. If you’re staying in Dijon, then this Côte de Nuits vineyard tour will show you the history of the vines.
The best time to visit the town, much like other Burgundy towns , is undoubtedly in the summer months when everything is actually open and the vines are covered in leaves, thus making them infinitely more attractive.
If you’re looking for a stress-free way to enjoy the vines, then I recommend booking an overnight stay in the town so as to enjoy the ambience and the atmosphere that Nuits-St-Georges has to offer. You can find the best accommodation prices here.
Frequently asked questions about Nuits-Saint-Georges
As of 2015, the population of Nuits-Saint-Georges was 5,552.
Those visiting Nuits-Saint-Georges on a budget will be pleased to know that there are a number of low cost activities and attractions on offer. Some of the best free things to do in Nuits St Georges include strolling through the nearby lanes that meander their way through vineyards, exploring the old town, and visiting the town’s museum.
Truth be told, the tiny size of the town and the fact that it can easily be explored on foot means that you only need around a day to see everything that this Burgundy town has to offer.
The tourist areas of Nuits St Georges are generally as safe as most other destinations in Europe, though petty crime can still occur. Visitors should be especially wary of pickpockets (pickpockets operate all over Europe and so you should always keep your things close, particularly in crowds) .
Never leave your valuables lying around or attended. I personally recommend always wearing a crossbody bag like these ones.

As well as the usual calcite concretions, stalagmites and stalactites in a variety of shapes and sizes (including massifs and columns), you can admire discs along the way - circular concretions that defy the laws of gravity. Those at La Cocalière are among the most beautiful and unusual, from the fine draperies (or calcite galons) to the semi-transparent growth streaks suspended from the vault, not forgetting the eccentric budding crystals and the long, slender fistulas or macaroni. All these geological curiosities are most often mirrored in the limpid or bluish water of the gours or natural basins with their calcite-festooned edges. The Salle des Gours, with its staggered staircases, is an outstanding example. As you pass by, a pearl in a cavern in formation will catch your eye, all the more so as it is a visually rare natural phenomenon. Near the exit, you'll see a representation of a prehistoric excavation site, showing objects and bones from the Neolithic and Bronze Age. From here, a small train will take you back to the reception area via a path through the garrigue.

- Nuits-Saint-Georges is the most southerly located village of the Côte de Nuits, to which the city gave its name and constitutes the other half of the Côte d'Or. The commune produces almost exclusively red wines, however there is a limited production of whites. The Nuits-Saint-Georges red wines are robust and elegant. They require some years of aging to reflect the finest expressions of the Pinot Noir. The name of Nuits-Saint-Georges is known worldwide, Apollo XV carried this wine into space and even gave its name to a lunar crater.

- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2022 - Bill Nanson Burgundy Report - December 2023 Smaller, more floral and more 'together' - that's a lovely nose. Gas again. The tannin that frames this is clearly on a higher level - the clarity of fruit is super though - good intensity too. Wait 3 years - it's very, very good!
Plenty of black cherry and blackberry fruit plus notes of licorice and red roses. A substantial Nuits-Saint-Georges with a wonderful balance of fleshiness and healthy tannins that aren't a jot too much. Long, moderately dry finish. Drink or hold. (Stuart Pigott, June 2024)
Cloves, smoke, dried cherries and iron on the nose, with some lemon peel. A little reductive. Medium-bodied, with chalky, powdery tannins. Darker fruit profile and quite some smoky power at the finish. Drink or hold.
Deep, boasting flavors of black cherry and blackberry, this red is guided by lively acidity and a light grip of tannins. Reveals toasty oak and sweet, spicy elements, remaining silky through the lingering finish. Drink now through 2035. (November 2023, USA)
Latour managed the tannins nicely in 2020, not obliterating them, but refining them, while maintaining the captivating wildness characteristic of the village's wines. The vintage provided sufficient density, so this youthful beauty is a balanced and quintessential example of Nuits-St.-Georges. An edgy freshness in its formidable length amplifies its character.
A juicy version, full of black currant, black cherry and violet aromas and flavors backed by vibrant acidity and light tannins. This should be approachable soon. Mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2030. -BS
Here the nose is quite firmly reduced and revealing nothing of interest. Otherwise, there is quite a bit of gas on the impressively concentrated and powerful medium-bodied flavors that, despite the gas, still manage to deliver fine length. This is hard to read with precision, but it appears to have very good underlying material.
"Ripe aromas include those of plum, earth, dark currant and a whiff of the sauvage. The delicious, vibrant and precise medium weight flavors possess very good depth and reasonable persistence on the moderately austere and rustic finale." 2026+
An open red, whose black currant and blueberry flavors are allied to a lively structure, with firm, dusty tannins. Tar and earth add grace notes, lingering on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2036. — BS
This is also quite earthy with game nuances adding breadth to the various dark berry aromas that evidence a whisper of the sauvage. The rich and acceptably concentrated medium weight flavors possess a succulent mouthfeel before culminating in a palate coating and ever-so-mildly rustic finale. This is refreshing... 2024+
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2017 - James Suckling - USA - February 2019 - 91/100 Very pretty red with spice, dried meat and dark fruit. Medium body and light tannins that are precise and focused. Shows tension. Just before bottling. Drink from 2020.
A hard edge clips the cherry, strawberry and earth flavors, accented by a graphite note. On the austere side now, this is linear and taut, leaving a chalky, stony feel on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2036 - Bruce Sanderson
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2016 - Wine Spectator - May 2016 - 93/100
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2016 - James Suckling - February 2016 - 92/100 A fragrant, black raspberry and cherry nose. Then a great combination of the firm tannins (which are typical for the appellation), generous fruit, bright acidity and minerality that carries the finish very nicely. Drink or hold.
I tasted this wine earlier this year and loved it - yes it is expensive but it is Christmas! Brimming with earthy sweet red fruits, textured, hugely complex with lingering. (By Leslie Williams)
The wine is structured with solid tannins and a foursquare character. Ripe fruits with plenty of balancing acidity give this wine its density and its crisp edge. (USA)
A taut, wiry version, with chalky tannins fused to cherry and black currant flavors. Accents of earth and spice fill this out. Long finish. (USA)
Distinctly earthy and sauvage nuances on the solidly complex aromas of black pinot fruit, pepper and spice wisps. The sleek, precise and appealingly energetic flavors deliver equally good depth on the youthfully austere and rustic finale. 2020+ Allen Meadows (USA)
There is enough wood surrounding the gamy and intensely earth red currant aromas to remark upon. The medium-bodied flavors possess good mid-palate density while retaining solid detail and punch on the robust and rustic finale that delivers fine if not truly exceptional length. This is very Nuits in basic character and note that it will need a few years of bottle age to round off the somewhat rude tannins. /2021+
Allen Meadows
Violet, black currant and black cherry notes pervade the Nuits-St.-Georges, whose texture is supple yet dense, while the well-integrated oak adds to the structure. By Bruce Sanderson (USA)
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2013 - Burghound.com - Avril 2015 - 89/100 Here too there is generous wood that carries with it menthol nuances that sit atop the otherwise fresh and layered aromas of deeply pitched dark currant and strong earth. There is good punch and muscle to the supple, round and nicely textured medium-bodied flavors that possess only average concentration but solid depth and length on the mildly rustic finish.
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2012 - Wine Enthusiast - December 2015 - 88/100 There is some solid structure here, along with a tannic edge that marks out a wine for aging. This has plum skin and a dense texture that brings out a richness as well as the acidity that marks the vintage. It should be aged ; drink from 2017. By Roger Voss (USA)
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2012 - Wine Spectator - Juin 2015 - 92/100 Juicy cherry and raspberry flavors are expressive, while the bright acidity and civilized tannins add support. This firms up a little, staying balanced and long, picking up spice accents on the finish. Best from 2018 through 2027.
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2012 - Burghound.com - April 2014 - 89/100 - "Top Value" A pungently earthy nose exhibits plenty of sauvage character on the mostly cassis infused aromas. The supple and round medium weight flavors possess good volume and reasonably good complexity along with excellent persistence on the dusty and palate coating finish. While not possessing yet possessing exceptional depth for its level, the required underlying material appears to be present such that more should develop in time. Worth a look. 2019+ By Allen Meadows (USA)
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2011 - Wine Spectator - June 2014 - 91/100 Bright cherry and currant flavors ride an almost racy structure in this sleek red, while spice and mineral elements add interest. Stays intense and persistent on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2025. By Bruce Sanderson (USA)
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2010 - Wine Spectator - October 2013 - 90/100 The graphite and sage aromas give way to cherry and black currant flavors in this vibrant, succulent red. Well-integrated, offering a finish that lingers with echoes of fruit, spice and mineral. Best from 2015 through 2025.
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2009 - Wine Spectator - December 2011 - 88/100 Very pure, this cherry-and raspberry-flavored red is silky and elegant. There's plenty of structure on the back end, with moderate length. Best from 2013 through 2020. (USA)
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2007 - Wine Spectator Online - 2010 - 89/100 Black cherry and blackberry notes permeate this supple-textured red, which is rich for the vintage, with a juicy quality. Just tails off a little on the finish. Best from 2011 through 2019. 780 cases made. By Bruce Sanderson, USA.
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2006 - Burghound.com - April 2008 - 88/100 An unusually pretty nose for a Nuits villages sports notably earthy yet high-toned red berry fruit aromas that merge into relatively elegant medium-bodied flavors that possess good mid-palate fat and plenty of Nuits character on the solidly persistent finish that displays only mild rusticity. A quality villages. 2012+. By Allen Meadows (USA).
- Nuits-Saint-Georges 2005 - Decanter - May 2008 - 3 stars Delicate raspberry nose, a touch of mint. Easygoing, suave fruit. Has freshness and accessibility. Medium length. From 2008.
- Nuits Saint Georges 2005 - Burghound.com - April 2007 - 88/100 This is deeply pitched still with a classic Nuits nose of earth, game and underbrush adding nuance to the dark berry fruit aromas that complement the rich, round and equally earthy flavors that possess good acid/fruit/tannin balance and solid length fashioned in a forward and relatively accessible package.

THE UNDERGROUND VERSAILLES OF THE PYRENEES
The Grotte des Canalettes is a private family site. It is located at the foot of the Canigou Massif, 300 meters from the Medieval City fortified by Vauban: Villefranche-de-Conflent, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is made up of two parts, the Galerie des Deux Porches which leads to the White Room and the Angkor Network. Stalactites, stalagmites, gours, columns, draperies, pillars...
• The White Room contains all the types of concretions found underground.
• The Angkor network includes: the Nave, the Lac aux Atolls, the Temple of Angkor and the Salle du Dôme Rouge.
• The Temple of Angkor is reminiscent of a Khmer temple in the Cambodian forest. This huge room, with its tormented decor, is full of twisted stone columns, stalagmitic flows with sparkling drapes…
Its exceptional structure could have inspired the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí! You can admire the Catalan Column, the Sagrada Familia, the Tomb of Martel, the Hanging Glacier and the Gouffre.
The Grotto is revealed as the visit progresses and offers you an uninterrupted series of natural buildings with unusual and gigantic volumes which will lead you to the magnificent belvedere of the Balcon des Ténèbres.
THE INVENTOR
Story of a project, a success
The development of the Grandes Canalettes cave is the work of a lifetime, that of Mr. Edmond Delonca, owner of the site from 1981 to 2013.
It was in 1984 that the cave was inaugurated after colossal works...
The entrance hall is carved with explosives and jackhammers and tons of sand extracted. Accessibility to the different rooms is facilitated by a track, platforms, handrails, galvanized and non-slip steel stairs are welded along the 1 km long route (round trip). All the material is transported on the back of a man, because no machine can invite itself to the party.
“Do not modify or denature a major natural site and offer maximum safety and comfort to the public barn” such were the wishes of its designer.
Edmond Delonca left us prematurely one day in December 2013.
Thierry Delory

Blue Grotto Tours
Tours to the most famous attraction on the island of Capri
To visit the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), you need to reach the entrance of the cave by land or sea. There, all visitors must board small rowboats, the only kind of boats that are allowed inside the cave. The grotto closes in case of rough seas or high winds, so you can't book a ticket in advance to visit the cave itself but only a boat tour that includes a stop at the cave entrance. Tickets to the grotto must be purchased directly at the cave entrance (there is a floating ticket office). More information about the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra)
How to Visit the Blue Grotto from the Capri Port
At the Marina Grande port, look for the Motoscafisti and Laser Capri ticket offices. These two boat companies offer both island tours with Blue Grotto stops and transfers directly to the Blue Grotto on larger group boats. Otherwise, you can opt for a private boat tour or transfer via a traditional gozzo boat.
Group Boat Tours from Capri's port (EUR 21/person)
Choose a Capri boat tour + stop at the Blue Grotto . The boat will cruise around the island then stop outside the Blue Grotto entrance. Here passengers will be loaded onto small rowboats to enter the grotto itself.

You can also book a private tour with a gozzo boat and skipper to visit the Blue Grotto plus 'stop to swim in the coves along the coastline . These boats can fit up to 7 passengers, though there are larger boats for more passengers. A tour of about 3-4 hours costs from EUR 300.
How to Visit the Blue Grotto from Sorrento
Sorrento is an excellent base for visiting Capri since the island is only a 30-minute hydrofoil ride away (tickets cost about EUR 20/person one way). You can take the ferry on your own and then book a boat tour from the Capri port to the Blue Grotto, or book a tour that departs directly from Sorrento, either with a small group or with a private tour.
Group Boat Tours from Sorrento (from EUR 69/person)
Large- and small-group tours set off directly from Sorrento and offer an excellent balance between price and service. These tours cruise around the island then stop outside the Blue Grotto entrance. Here passengers will be loaded onto small rowboats to enter the grotto itself. Afterwards, the boat returns to Sorrento. Budget Tours from Sorrento
Private Boat Tours from Capri's port (from around EUR 500/boat

Expert Advice
Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).
