Gaganachukki and Barachukki Falls: The Twin Waterfalls of Shivanasamudra

The main attraction of Shivanasamudra Falls is the twin waterfalls of Gaganachukki and Barachukki, which are separated by a few kilometers and can be viewed from different vantage points. Gaganachukki is the western branch of the Kaveri river that splits into two segments and plunges down a rocky cliff in a horseshoe shape. Barachukki is the eastern branch of the river that forms a wide cascade over a series of steps. Both falls are about 90 meters high and 300 meters wide, and create a majestic sight, especially during the monsoon season when the water flow is at its peak.

Photo of Shivanasamudra Falls 1/9 by

To enjoy the best views of Gaganachukki , you can visit the Dargah Viewpoint, which is a platform near a mosque that overlooks the falls from a distance. You can also visit the Hydro-Electric Power Station Viewpoint , which is a closer and more panoramic view of the falls from the opposite side. To enjoy the best views of Barachukki, you can visit the Barachukki Viewpoint , which is a walkway that leads to the edge of the falls and offers a spectacular view of the cascade and the valley. You can also opt for a boating or a coracle ride that takes you to the base of the falls and lets you experience the spray and the sound of the water up close.

Some tips and warnings for visiting the twin waterfalls are:

- The best time to visit the falls is during the monsoon season from July to October, when the water flow is the highest and the falls are the most impressive. However, be prepared for heavy rains, slippery roads, and crowded viewpoints.

- The entry ticket for the falls is Rs. 20 per person and Rs. 30 per vehicle. The parking fee is Rs. 50 per vehicle. The boating or coracle ride fee is Rs. 100 per person.

- Swimming or bathing in the falls is strictly prohibited due to the strong currents and the depth of the water. There have been many accidents and fatalities in the past due to people ignoring this rule.

- Beware of the monkey menace at the viewpoints, as they can snatch your food, belongings, or even attack you. Do not feed or provoke them, and keep your valuables safe.

- Shivanasamudra Hydro-Electric Power Station: The First of its Kind in Asia and India

Another interesting feature of Shivanasamudra Falls is the hydro-electric power station that is located near the Gaganachukki falls. This power station is one of the first in Asia and India, and has a remarkable history and significance. It was established in 1902 by the then Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, and the British engineer, Diwan Sheshadri Iyer, to supply electricity to the Kolar Gold Fields, which were about 150 kilometers away. The power station used the water from the falls to generate electricity through turbines and generators, and transmitted it through high-voltage lines. The power station was a marvel of engineering and innovation at that time, and marked the beginning of the industrial revolution in India.

The power station is still operational today, and has a capacity of 42 megawatts. It is managed by the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL), and is open to visitors with prior permission. You can see the original turbines, generators, and transmission lines, and learn more about the history and functioning of the power station. You can also enjoy the view of the Gaganachukki falls from the power station, which is different from the other viewpoints.

Some facts and statistics about the power station are:

The power station was inaugurated by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India, on November 9, 1902.

The power station was the first in Asia and India to use alternating current (AC) for transmission, and the second in the world after Niagara Falls in the USA.

The power station was the first in India to use three-phase power for transmission, and the first in the world to use 40,000 volts for transmission.

The power station was the first in India to use oil-filled cables for transmission, and the first in the world to use steel towers for transmission.

The power station was the first in India to use synchronous motors for power factor correction, and the first in the world to use automatic voltage regulators for voltage control.

Ranganatha Temple: The Ancient and Sacred Shrine of Shivanasamudra

Shivanasamudra Falls is not only a natural wonder, but also a religious destination. Near the falls, there is an ancient and sacred temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, who is a form of Lord Vishnu. The temple is also known as Madhya Ranga, which means the middle Ranga, as it is located between the two other famous Ranganatha temples in Srirangapatna and Srirangam. The temple is believed to be one of the oldest in Karnataka, and has a rich history and legend associated with it.

Photo of Shivanasamudra Falls 2/9 by

According to the legend, the temple was built by a king named Tirumala Raya, who was a devotee of Lord Ranganatha. He had a dream in which the Lord instructed him to build a temple for him at Shivanasamudra, where he would reside in the form of a self-manifested idol. The king followed the Lord’s command, and found the idol in the river near the falls. He then constructed a beautiful temple for the idol, and worshipped it with devotion. The temple became a popular pilgrimage site, and attracted many devotees and saints over the years.

The temple has a unique architecture and deity, that reflect its antiquity and sanctity. The temple is built in the Dravidian style, with a gopuram (tower), a mandapa (hall), and a garbhagriha (sanctum). The temple is surrounded by a stone wall, and has a spacious courtyard. The temple also has a pond, a well, and a garden. The deity of the temple is a black stone idol of Lord Ranganatha, who is reclining on a serpent bed, with his consort Goddess Lakshmi at his feet, and Lord Brahma emerging from his navel. The idol is about six feet long, and is adorned with jewels and flowers. The idol is said to have a miraculous power, and grants the wishes of the devotees.

The temple has a vibrant and festive atmosphere, especially during the special occasions and celebrations. The temple conducts daily poojas (worship rituals) for the deity, and offers prasadam (sacred food) to the devotees. The temple also celebrates various festivals throughout the year, such as the car festival, the chariot procession, the boat festival, and the flower festival. The most important festival of the temple is the Rathotsava, which is held in the month of March or April, and involves a grand procession of the deity on a decorated chariot around the town. The festival attracts thousands of devotees, who participate in the event with devotion and enthusiasm.

Shivanasamudra

A small town nestling along the River Kaveri in the Mandya District which belongs to the Southern Karnataka, Shivanasamudra has a rich heritage to boast. Asias very first hydro electric power station was established here in the year 1902. The region of Shivanasamudra was mainly ruled by Ganga Dynasty starting from the 2nd Century leading to the 11th century. Consequently the sovereign of this region was taken over by Cholas followed by Hoysalas who reigned until 1346. Subsequent rulers include Vijayanagar, Wodeyar Dynasty kings and the Sultans of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan. The signature mark of Shivanasamudra is depicted by its rich aesthetic culture of drama and paintings. It is also popular for its abundance of waterfalls which contributes to the all round spectacular views of this little town. The town demarcates the Kaveri River creating two natural waterfalls named as Bharachukki and Gaganachukki. The dazzling waterfalls which are ranked among the most amazing hundred waterfalls in the world merge downstream to flow again as one river. The town is also a popular Hindu holy pilgrimage destination as it is known as the Lord Shivas Sea or Madhya Ranga. The temple of Lord Ranganatha built in the Dravidian Style and home to the renowned sculptures of Lord Ranganatha and the lord of Serpents, Takshaka attracts droves of holy worshippers from all parts of India and around the world. With the Bengaluru Airport located 120km away from the town, Maddur Railway Station and national bus services, the town has ample accessibility. The best time for visiting this charming little town is from July to October.

Recently, the US Federal government banned online casinos from operating in America by making it illegal to transfer money to them through any US bank or payment system. As a result of this law, most of the popular online casino networks such as Party Gaming and PlayTech left the United States. Overnight, online casino players found themselves being chased by the Federal government. But, after a fortnight, the online casino industry came up with a solution and new online casinos started taking root. These began to operate under a different business umbrella, and by doing that, rendered the transfer of money to and from them legal. A major part of this was enlisting electronic banking systems that would accept this new clarification and start doing business with me. Listed in this article are the electronic banking systems that accept players from the United States that wish to play in online casinos.

karnataka tourism hotels in shivanasamudra

Last updated on October 19th, 2023 at 09:48 pm

It is time to go to Shivanasamudra Falls as water has been released from Kabini Dam and the falls are lovely! Shivanasamudra Falls and Talakadu are the perennial favourites of Bangaloreans for a weekend picnic.

We present a complete one day trip guide here with a detailed itinerary to make it easy for you!

This trip from Bangalore will take you to two lovely waterfalls on the Cauvery River at Shivanasamudra. At Shivanasamudra Falls, the Cauvery River splits into two and jumps over rocks to create two spectacular falls. This day trip will also give you an opportunity to spend some time by the riverside, on a sandy beach at Talakadu!

All you can comfortably do in a day. Shivanasamudra Waterfalls from Bangalore is at a distance of 120 KMs. We will tell you how! This will also answer the following few questions.

  • What is Shivanasamudra Falls famous for?
  • Which is the best time to visit Shivanasamudra Falls?
  • What is Talakdu famous for?
  • What is a good time to visit Talakadu?

The Circuit

The falls can be reached either via Kanakapura or via the Mysore expressway.

Circuit 1 – Bangalore – Kanakapura – Malavalli – Gaganachukki falls – Bharachukki falls – Talakadu – Bangalore

Distance – 315 KMs

Road condition – Very good

Route –  Google Map of the circuit

Circuit 2 – Bangalore – Maddur – Malavalli – Gaganachukki falls – Barachukki falls – Talakadu – Bangalore

Distance – 307 KMs

Google map of the circuit –  https://goo.gl/maps/KkDPoL4LX6yGhwms6

This option helps avoid the traffic between Bangalore and Kanakapura if one is leaving late. This is also helpful for people living in West Bangalore. In this option have Breakfast at Maddur.

The Itinerary

Circuit 1 – Leave home and hit NICE road if you are near it. Exit at Kanakapura Road. Drive along the road with a few lakes to give you company. Driving early morning on this road is a pleasure as there is no traffic.

Circuit 2 – Leave home and hit NICE road if you are near it. Exit at Mysore Road. Drive along the road.

Circuit 1 – Have Breakfast at Kanakapura. Vasu Hotel is an excellent option. A traditional self-service hotel. This is not a hep hotel but has excellent Idlis, vadas and of course yummy Masala Dosa.

Circuit 2 – Have BF at Maddur either at Maddur Tiffannys which is famous for Maddur Vada.

Circuit 1 – Depart Kanakapura and drive along NH 209 (New No is 948). At Malavalli, continue on the bypass road and drive straight to the first of the two falls at Shivanasamudra – Gaganachukki. Follow excellent signage from the highway to the falls. Gaganchukki as the name says is the taller of the two.

Circuit 2 – Depart Maddur and drive along NH 209 (New No is 948). At Malavalli, continue on the Chamarajanagar road and drive straight to the first of the two falls at Shivanasamudra – Gaganachukki. Follow excellent signage from the highway to the falls. Gaganchukki as the name says is the taller of the two.

10 AM – Arrive at Gaganachukki Falls. Park your car and proceed to the viewpoint. Enjoy the spectacular view of the falls. Gaganachukki as the name suggests cascades from the tall rocks and forms a lovely waterfall. Do not venture to walk down to the bottom of the falls and try to swim in the water. It is dangerous as rocks are slippery and there are whirlpools. You may find some young boys venturing into it but we don’t advise.

10.45 AM – Depart from Gaganachukki and proceed towards Bharachukki. It is a fifteen minutes drive and you reach other spectacular waterfalls. On the way stop over and enjoy the panoramic view of the huge lake formed by the barrage against the Cauvery River. As the name suggests, this is wider with a larger volume of water. Go to the viewpoint and enjoy the panoramic view of the falls. Spend 30 -45 minutes here.

11.45 AM – Depart for Talakadu. This is a comfortable 45-minute drive. Reach Talakadu. Park your car in the parking area and enjoy the lovely sandy beach! Do not try to swim in the river. But you can play in the water near the bank. Please be careful of sudden depths due to loose sand patterns. You will also see coracles being rented out for rides. You can try at your own risk as these are not authorised and they don’t come with any life jackets.

1.30 AM – Lunch time. There are some shacks in the town and you can have lunch there. Else, you can drive to any of the two resorts – Raya Resorts or Jaladhama Resort – close by for lunch.

3 PM – After lunch, you can visit the temples in Talakadu. There are around 30 temples. Some of them are buried under sand and some of them were excavated. The five temples of Shiva – Pancahalinga – are all excavated and opened for darshan. Also, don’t forget to visit the lovely Keerti Narayana Temple built in Hoysala Style.

4.30 PM – Depart for Bangalore. Retrace the same route which you took to reach the falls. You can either stop at Vasu Hotel or MTR near Art of Living ashram for snacks on the way if coming via Kanankapura and reach home by 7.30 PM OR have Maddur Vada and coffee at Maddur Tiffanys if coming via Maddur and Mysore expressway.

Travel Tips

a) The best time to visit the Shivanasamudra waterfalls is in the monsoon when the water is released from KRS Dam. But the falls and surroundings are lovely in all seasons. Shivanasamudra falls timings are from dawn to dusk.

b) Do not enter the water at the waterfalls. Many lives have been lost here due to misadventures.

c) At Talakadu, either you can visit the temple first, have lunch and then relax on the beach or vice versa.

d) You may take the help of a guide in Talakadu who will charge a nominal fee and take you around the temples and explain interesting stories about them. That way, one will not waste precious time.

e) Though there are trees on the Riverside, if you have a tent, carry it and pitch it on the beach closer to the river.

f) In the last few years a couple of resorts – Raya Resort and Jaladhama Resort – have opened in the region. If you are planning to stay overnight, you can do so. Staying overnight will help you explore Mudukuthore and the spectacular Hoysala temple of Somnathpur . These resorts also have boat rides with life jackets.

g) A resort by Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation has been opened in the last couple of years near Gaganachukki. We are not sure about the quality of it.

h) Make sure you have a good hat and also sunscreen as the afternoon sun at Talakadu will be scorching. Check out good deals on Amazon for this lovely hat for men/Women

Conclusion

Shivanasamudra waterfalls and Talakadu is an easy one day trip from Bangalore. It gives a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of city life. If you have any questions, please let us know in the comments box below and we will answer them.

Postscript – when water is released from krs dam and kabini reservoir, shivanasamudra falls will be a glorious sight as you can see in these pics.

One day trip to Shivanasamudra Falls (Gaganachukki and Barachukki)

Shivanasamudra falls

Last Updated on March 25, 2022 by admin

I was staying with my cousin and her parents so it was a family vacation of sorts. We hired a cab from Mysore to Shivanasamudra Falls and explored a few other places in between.

Table of Contents

About Shivanasamudra Falls

Shivanasamudra Falls are located approximately 70 km from Mysore and 139 km from Bengaluru. Being at such a reachable distance, Shivanasamudra Falls are a perfect one day trip from both cities.

Shivanasamudra Falls also known as Sivasamudram waterfalls or Shivasamudram waterfalls are located in the Mandya district of Karnataka state. The name ‘Shiva’ means the god Shiva and ‘samudra’ means Sea.

Visit to the Gaganachukki and Barachukki waterfalls

I was excited to finally be there as the monsoon was in full force and I was sure of a good show ahead. The entire approach road was full of deep forests of the Cauvery (Kaveri) Wildlife Sanctuary.

Formed by the Kaveri river, Shivasamudram waterfalls are segmented waterfalls with several parallel streams formed adjacent to each other. The Kaveri river divides itself into two different falls, forming the Gaganachukki waterfalls and the Barachukki waterfalls. Gaganachukki and Barachukki Falls are collectively called Shivasamudram waterfalls though Gaganachukki is most commonly represented as Shivasamudram waterfalls. The falls offer breathtaking sights in the peak monsoons. Very different from my visit to Kuang si waterfalls, Luang Prabang .

Fact: Shivanasamudra Falls are the second largest fall in India and have been ranked 45th among the world’s best 100 waterfalls.

Cauvery (Kaveri) River that feeds the Shivanasamudra Falls

Cauvery (Kaveri) River that feeds the Shivanasamudra Falls

Barachukki Falls

These were the first falls we visited. The segmented Barachukki waterfalls are graceful and the more popular one among the two falls. This crashing cascade of water is also the wider one among the two falls and has a heavier inflow. The mist rising from the waterfalls makes it look breathtaking.

In summer and winter, the inflow decreases and visitors can climb down to the waterfall and have a bath. But you have to be extremely careful as the flow is still strong and there are no lifeguards available. The mist formed from the water plunging at great speed from the cliff above is a great sight.

Coracle ride on Shivanasamudra Falls (Barachukki falls)

A coracle is a traditional circular boat that has been used in Karnataka for centuries to ferry people across the river. Back in the day, coracles were made from willow and were lightweight, waterproof and affordable. The modern version uses plastic sheets and bitumen sheets to make them sturdier. On average, around 4-5 people can fit into a coracle along with the rider.

Coracle ride at Barachukki waterfall is available in the off-season months to see the mouth of the magnificent waterfall from close quarters. Since I was visiting during the monsoon, these rides were closed for safety reasons. Climbing down the waterfall was also closed given the sheer volume of the waterfall.

Coracle Rides are available in other places of Karnataka such as Hampi, Dandeli, Kabini, Tungabhadra and others.

A coracle ride costs approximately Rs. 200/- per head.

Gaganachukki Falls

Situated at a distance of 1km from Barachukki is the Gaganachukki waterfalls. It is a huge horsetail shaped waterfall dropping from a height of 90 m and two large parallel streams that cascade down through a rocky bed. The currents here are quite strong and the gorge is quite deep. Hence, visitors cannot go to the waterfalls and swimming is prohibited. There is a watchtower offering a spectacular view of the waterfall. Asia’s first Hydro-electric Power station was set up in the year 1902 at Gaganachukki waterfalls and is one of the oldest power generating stations in India.

Best time to visit Shivanasamudra falls

Monsoons are the best time to see the waterfalls in full grandeur. I am so glad I could visit them then! But the downside is not being able to get into the water or ride a coracle.

Since most people do a day trip to Shivanasamudra falls from Bengaluru or Mysore, they tend to reach late morning. While reaching there in monsoon any time of the day is pleasant, summers are harsh. So reach early or late during the day to enjoy the waterfalls to the fullest.

Shivanasamudra Accommodation

Unfortunately, there are no places to stay overlooking the waterfalls. Since most people do a day trip to Baarachukki and Gaganachukki, there are few hotels or resorts. Thankfully there are Karnataka State Tourism Development (KSTDC) run hotels that are decent enough for food and stay.

A Hotel near Barachukki, Gaganachukki falls is KSTDC – Hotel Maurya . The hotel offers 4 A/C double rooms and is budget-friendly. Advance reservation can be made by contacting: 8970650053 or by email: [email protected]

FAQs on Shivanasamudra Falls

Is barachukki and shivanasamudra same.

Barachukki and Gaganachukki waterfalls are together known as the Shivanasamudra Falls. The eastern branch of the waterfall is known as Barachukki while the western branch is known as Gaganachukki.

Which is better, Gaganachukki or Barachukki?

That’s a personal perspective. Gaganchukki has amazing viewpoints placed at good heights but at Barachukki visitors can get down to the bottom of the falls and ride coracles.

Sustainable tips for visiting Shivanasamudra falls

  • Carry reusable and refillable water bottles.
  • Do not litter – It is perfectly okay to snack near the waterfall, but do not litter the pristine areas. Use a trash bin to dispose of snack pouches or pet bottles. Or even better, take it back to the hotel.
  • Do not go in the water applying sunscreen lotion/mosquito repellent creams – Cosmetic products use many known and unknown chemicals. They may or may not react to the natural flora and fauna of the area. Why take the chance? The best is to avoid it.
  • Respect nature – Though you may get the most perfect shot and a thousand likes for the photo, do not in any way harm the natural formations of the waterfalls or trees for a vantage point.

Lovely spot. Waterfalls are beautiful and these are no exception. Gaganachukki waterfall would be lovely to see from the watch tower you mentioned. Interesting that this was the location of Asia’s first Hydro-electric Power station.

Sivasamudram waterfalls look so full! I wonder how many waterfalls have one name but there’re separate Falls (we have Niagara here). I’m glad you decided to stop at the temple at your aunt’s suggestion. This makes a great day itinerary.

Ok, that is incredible that the Somnathpura Temple was basically empty!! You always find really cool places, Ketki! The falls look stunning with the cloudy weather and mountains in the background. I am preparing for my first trip to India next month (Kochi) and am beyond excited for my first look at this beautiful country. I will have to keep the Sivasamudram in mind for a second or third visit!

[…] Somnathpura and Talakadu are sites with a large number of ancient temples, but most importantly they are architectural hot-spots near Bangalore which you would enjoy visiting irrespective of your faith. A trip to Talakadu and Somnathpura is like a mini-Hampi tour within 50 km from Mysore city. Talakadu was a Hindu Pilgrimage site which went under dunes of sand few hundred years ago. You can end your trip with a magical coracle ride in the serene waters of the Cauvery. 24km from Talakadu is the Somnathpura temple. The Keshava temple of Somnathpura is a 1000-year-old architectural wonder where you can still find the intricate stone carvings intact. You can also do a day trip to Shivasamudra waterfalls. […]
