A Guide to Airline Flight Passes Around the World

Following on from my post on airline stopover programs, I wanted to continue to explore more of the unique ways that airlines around the world strive to offer value for customers.

Flight passes are bundles of prepaid flights that are valid within a specific region and for a limited amount of time. Put differently, flight passes are akin to buying flights in bulk. Many airlines around the world offer passes in various forms, each with its own unique benefits and drawbacks.

Whether or not you can benefit from a flight pass depends on how often you travel and the places you travel to. If you are a budget-conscious traveller, the idea of forking out thousands of dollars for speculative travel may be terrifying, as you can often get better deals by watching out for flight sales throughout the year. 

On the other hand, if you travel during peak travel periods or often make last-minute bookings, it could be very worthwhile to look into buying a number of flight credits in advance. Similarly, if you plan to do a lot of travel in a short period of time, you may benefit from buying an unlimited flight pass. 

Let’s have a look at some flight passes offered in Canada and abroad. If you have used a different flight pass that isn’t on the list, feel free to reach out and we’ll make sure it gets added.

Different types of flight passes, unlimited flight passes, flight credit passes.

Flight passes generally come in two different varieties. Some flight passes offer unlimited travel within a restricted time frame. If you plan on doing a lot of travel within the permitted time frame, these unlimited passes can offer substantial value over buying one-way or multi-city flights.

Unlimited flight passes are best used by maximizing your travel over a short amount of time. If you’re the type of traveler who likes to see as many places as possible when you visit a new country, or if you need to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time for work or play, these passes could be worth looking into. 

A more common type of flight pass is purchasing a number of flight credits that are redeemed for travel between specified zones within a specific time frame. Each time you go to book a flight, you use a credit instead of being subject to the currently available fares. 

This type of flight pass is typically purchased by someone who often travels back and forth between two areas. Perhaps you’re a snowbird who travels between Toronto and Arizona a handful of times between fall and spring. Maybe your vocation requires you to travel between Vancouver and Toronto to meet clients in person. Or, you might be a student studying in Montreal but based out of Edmonton, and your parents are generous enough to fly you back for holidays and breaks.

We’ll first look at the most notable unlimited flight passes offered around the world, followed by the flight pass programs that operate on a per-credit basis.

Flair Airlines

Earlier this year, Flair Airlines sold the Go Travel Pass , which offered unlimited travel within its Canadian network between February 13 and May 13, 2020. For $499, passengers could book flights on any day of the week except for Fridays and Sundays and during blackout periods (long weekends and Spring Break). For $699, passengers could travel on any day of the week and had one checked bag per flight.

The pass covered the base fare only, so passengers were still on the hook for the taxes and fees for each flight they booked. For example, a flight between Halifax and Toronto has a base fare of $42.27 and taxes and fees of $46.73. So, a pass-holder would be on the hook for $46.73, which is a very reasonable amount to pay (but adds up with each flight you take).

While I can’t say that I have a particular desire to fly with Flair on a regular basis, I can see this pass offering substantial value to anyone wanting to visit as many places in Canada as possible on their holidays. The pass would definitely help you stretch your travel budget so you could make up for the in-flight experience with a variety of on-the-ground experiences.

Air Canada also offers unlimited flight passes for use in a variety of zones in their domestic and transborder networks. In comparison to Flair’s Go Travel Pass, a similar unlimited pass with Air Canada is many orders of magnitude more expensive, coming in at a whopping $5,028 per month!

(In addition, Air Canada also sells flight passes in the form of credits, which will be covered below.)

Azul Airlines

If you’re planning a visit to Brazil, Azul Airlines’s Azul Airpass gives you unlimited flights within their domestic network for 10 or 21 days. If you have an international paid ticket on United, TAP, or Azul Airlines to Brazil, you can buy a 10-day Airpass for US$399 (plus booking fees) or a 21-day Airpass for US$499 (plus booking fees). If you fly to Brazil with any other carrier, you can buy an Airpass valid for four flights within a 21-day period for US$499 (plus booking fees).

A quick search for flights within Brazil shows that you can get flights between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo for $20, so if you only plan on visiting Brazil’s major tourist hotspots, then this may not be the best choice for you. Over the course of three weeks, though, you could definitely get your money’s worth by hopping around the surprisingly large country. 

Bamboo Airways

Bamboo Aiways, based in Hanoi, Vietnam, is currently offering Bamboo Passes valid in their domestic and international networks. The Bamboo Pass Unlimited gives cardholders unlimited travel for one-, three-, six-, and twelve-month durations for $3,000, $9,000, $14,400, and $25,200 respectively. 

Bamboo Airways flies to the Czech Republic, Australia, Indonesia, Los Angeles and San Francisco in the US, most countries in East and Southeast Asia, and extensively within Vietnam. Over the course of a month, I imagine you could squeeze value out of the pass by jet-setting around Vietnam and the world, if it was safe to travel.

VietJet Air

VietJet is another discount Vietnamese airline with hubs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Currently, they are offering two unlimited passes for flights to 45 destinations within Vietnam. 

For $536, the Power Pass Sky6 pass gives you unlimited travel within Vietnam until the end of September. Similarly, for $1,012, the Power Pass Sky12 pass extends the period until March 31, 2021. This includes a 15kg checked bag and a 7kg carry-on bag, but you are still on the hook for taxes and fees. 

A quick search for flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi shows a total round-trip cost of $64 on their lowest fare. Of this, $52 was taxes and fees, so I’m not sure if this particular product is a sensational value (even with the included baggage). I think the value here would come in last-minute bookings or bookings during peak travel periods, which seems to be a common theme with flight passes.

The more common alternative to paying for “unlimited” travel is to buy flight pass credits. These credits are akin to buying a 10-pack of one-way public transit tickets – you pay for a number of trips in advance, and you usually pay a bit less than what you would have paid if you bought 10 separate one-way journeys. 

Flight passes aren’t really of use to the occasional traveller because of their high upfront cost; instead, they are best used for flexibility in last-minute bookings or cancellations, booking during peak-season travel, or travelling back and forth between two regions on a frequent basis.

Air Canada offers a variety of flight passes for travel across Canada, between Canada and the United States, and to many of its international destinations. The price is inclusive of all taxes, fees, and surcharges, so once you’ve purchased a pass, you need not spend a penny more.

The type of flight pass you need depends on where you need to fly and the type of fare from which you’d benefit most. In total, there are 44 different flight passes available, with options in a mid-range economy fare (Flex), a full-fare economy fare (Latitude), or a business class fare. Less expensive fares will be less flexible, may incur fees for changes and cancellations, and are subject to the availability of “M” Flex fares.

For individuals, most passes are sold in packages of 6 or 10 credits. There are also options for businesses ranging from 30 to 200 flight credits. Each one-way flight journey costs 1 credit (even if it consists of multiple flight segments), and booking is done through Air Canada’s dedicated flight pass portal.

Suppose you’re a teacher working in Toronto but whose family lives in Vancouver. You tend to travel in peak periods when you have time away from work over the December holidays, Spring Break in March, long weekends, and during the summer break.

You stumble upon the East West Connector Pass, and you’re weighing out the benefits of purchasing one.

The average price per flight is $577.10 one-way (or $1,154.20 round-trip), and since it’s a Flex ticket, you also earn 2,085 Aeroplan miles per direction and have one free checked bag. Over the December holidays, the current price for a Standard fare ticket is $1,137.32 excluding a checked-bag and earning only 521 Aeroplan miles. 

While the difference in price isn’t substantial, you’ll save some money on bags and earn more Aeroplan miles for your trip. If you have eUpgrade credits, you can use them for the Flex fare, but not on the Standard fare. And if the price rises substantially, or if you are booking closer to the date of travel, then because you’ve paid in advance, you will only have paid $577.10 per direction.

Lastly, if you have Altitude status with Air Canada, you can earn additional eUpgrade credits if you purchase a flight pass. To do so, you’ll need to select “eUpgrade credits for eligible flight pass activities” from Bundle 2 of your Altitude Select Privileges.

Porter Airlines

Toronto-based Porter Airlines sells the Porter Pass . They operate in a very similar way to Air Canada’s – you prepay for a bundle of flight credits, and you have one year from the date of purchase to use them.

Unlike Air Canada, Porter Passes of 20 or more flight credits are transferrable to anyone else. So, a family of five could each have two round-trip flights per year if they had 20 credits at their disposal. For Porter’s destinations in Canada, each flight would cost $272 per person, which isn’t unreasonable for, say, a flight from Toronto to St. John’s.

The Qantas Explorer Pass lets you add a series of domestic flights within Australia to a transpacific booking from Canada or the United States with Qantas or American Airlines.

Adding the domestic flights is easy – just head to the multi-city booking page and sandwich them between your international flights.

Note that the routes are divided into three zones, as shone above, and each zone has an associated fare. If you stick to direct flights between cities, you’ll avoid paying the fare for two different zones.

For example, if you’re in Uluru (Ayers Rock) and you’d like to get to Adelaide, you’ll have to fly through Sydney or Melbourne, thus incurring fares from Zone B (Uluru to Sydney) and Zone A (Sydney to Adelaide). Instead, you could consider flying into Alice Springs, doing a side trip to Uluru, and then continue on to Adelaide. You could also consider incorporating a vehicle relocation into your trip.

British Airways & Other Major Carriers

British Airways’s Flight Pass covers flights between London and European hubs. This can be an alternative to low-cost carriers, whose bare-bones products may be less appealing to those who travel for business or who prefer a certain level of comfort. 

Interestingly, the price also changes depending on how far out you’d like to be able to book flights. The farther in advance you purchase, the less you pay per flight. Similarly, the closer in advance you tend to book, the more you pay per flight.

While these passes aren’t really useful for anyone visiting Europe on holidays, if you live in London or any of the hubs to which British Airways flies, and if you need to fly between the two cities often for any reason, this flight pass can save you money without being subjected to travelling on a low-cost carrier.

British Airways’s product is one of many similar flight pass products offered by major airlines across the world, and poring over the details of each airline likely wouldn’t reveal any significant differences.

There are, however, a few interesting regional flight passes that are worth discussing.

If you find yourself on an aspirational trip to the archipelagos of French Polynesia, it would be worthwhile to look into an Air Tahiti Pass . The pass allows you to travel between several or many of the islands at a very reasonable price.

For example, the Bora Bora pass allows you to visit Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Bora Bora, and Maupiti for either $625 (lower fare, less baggage allowance, less flexibility) or $807 (higher fare, more baggage allowance, more flexibility).

Anyone headed to Bora Bora would have to book an international flight to Tahiti before taking a separate domestic Air Tahiti flight to Bora Bora. And since Air Tahiti is the sole operator of domestic flights in French Polynesia, they charge a significant premium on this 50-minute route: fares are usually around $583 round-trip per person.

Therefore, by going with a flight pass starting at $625, you can add an additional four destinations to your French Polynesian trip for only a few dollars more, which can offer incredible value.

Each pass is valid for travel within 28 days, and your journey must begin and end in either Tahiti or Moorea. You can only visit each destination once, although stopovers of less than 24 hours in hubs are allowed. You’ll need to plan your trip according to Air Tahiti’s flight schedule, so make sure you’ve planned that out in advance.

Caribbean Airlines

Similar to the Air Tahiti Pass is the Caribbean Airlines Explorer Pass . The airline operates flights between Antigua, the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Tobago, and Trinidad.

The Explorer Pass allows you to hop between three or more islands over the course of 21 days, although the fares don’t include taxes and fees for each flight segment. 

While most people who travel to the Caribbean likely visit only one island, the Explorer Pass could give you the option to experience a few different islands on one trip.

I’ve long wanted to island hop around the Caribbean, and this pass seems like a reasonably affordable way to do so, especially if combined with the possibility of redeeming Avios on select British Airways fifth-freedom flights (like Antigua–St. Kitts).

At a time when the vast majority of passengers and planes around the world remain grounded, the idea of regularly flying across the country for business or pleasure remains far-fetched for now. As soon as it becomes possible to fly again, I’m sure many of you (myself included) would like nothing more than to hop on any plane for the sole purpose of being in the clouds en route to anywhere.

While the future of frequent flying remains unsure for the time being, flight passes may be worth your consideration if you plan on spending a lot of time in one area or if you frequently travel back and forth between two areas. For those who speculate that the future cost of air travel will substantially increase, flight passes may be a way to secure relatively affordable air travel when it becomes possible to fly again.

Create a Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account

Regardless of your age, you must have your own Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account.

Log in to your TTP account and complete the application

A $100 non-refundable fee is required with each completed application.

Schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center

After accepting your completed application, CBP will conduct a review. If your application is conditionally approved, your TTP account will instruct you to schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center . Each applicant must schedule a separate interview.  ( Please Note: 80% of applications are approved within 2 weeks while some applications can take up to 12 months or longer to be processed.)

Complete the application process

Bring your valid passport and one other form of identification, such as a driver’s license or ID card, to the interview. If you are a lawful permanent resident, you must present your machine readable permanent resident card.

International travel opens to the vaccinated, but how do you prove you got the shot.

There's good news and bad news for Americans who have been itching to take a European vacation. Spain reopens to vaccinated tourists on June 7. Greece, Germany, France, Italy, Croatia and other countries are opening up again soon.

But in order to go, travelers will have to show proof that they've been vaccinated, and it's not yet clear how they'll do that. That's causing a lot of confusion among those with pent-up wanderlust, as demand for air travel has been soaring in recent weeks.

The Transportation Security Administration reports that 1.87 million people went through the nation's airport security checkpoints on May 23. That's the highest number of air travelers since the pandemic began and 90% of 2019 levels.

Coronavirus Updates

Vaccinated u.s. travelers will be allowed to visit europe again starting this summer.

"The last couple weeks, we have seen a really big pick up [in inquiries and bookings] and it's completely tied to vaccinations," says travel adviser Kendra Thornton, owner of Royal Travel and Tours in Chicago's northern suburbs. "As more and more people get vaccinated, we have more people being comfortable booking travel and planning travel."

Most of Thornton's clients have been booking vacations to Florida's beaches, Hawaii and other domestic destinations, but with much of Europe opening up soon, some are eager to cross the Atlantic.

"We definitely have clients that the second this news came out, were like, OK, I want to go to Portugal, I want to go to Greece, I want to go to Italy," Thornton says.

Those travelers will likely have to prove that they've been vaccinated, and that's a problem, because it's not clear exactly what kind of proof will be accepted.

"It's very confusing and it's changing every minute right now," Thornton says.

For now, travelers can self-report their vaccination status by showing their COVID-19 vaccination card with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention logo on it, but as the number of international travelers increases, can you imagine the airport lines as airline or Customs employees try to check each and every one? In addition, many countries including the U.S. continue to require a recent negative COVID-19 test before allowing entry, which requires travelers to present even more paperwork.

Plus there is no single standard vaccination card, and they can be easily lost, damaged or even forged.

FAQ: What Is A Vaccine 'Passport,' And What Are These Credentials Used For?

"We're basically counting on trust, when the country is facing a trust deficit," says Leonard Marcus, director of the Aviation Public Health Initiative at Harvard University. "So there's no way to verify that someone is, in fact, actually vaccinated; it's only their word that, yes, I'm vaccinated.

Marcus says there needs to be a better way than the honor system.

"There should be either government systems or private sector systems that are reliable that I can use to show to an airline, that I can show as I go into a crowded facility, that I've been vaccinated," he says.

But as of now, there is no federal database tracking who has been vaccinated, and the Biden administration says it will not be issuing what some have dubbed "vaccine passports," a digital certificate that would verify a person's vaccination status.

Some cities and states are considering them for entry into certain businesses or venues. New York already has the voluntary Excelsior Pass that can be shown upon entry to bars, restaurants, concerts and sporting events.

But at least a dozen other states controlled by Republicans, including Arizona, Florida, Texas and Wyoming, are moving in the opposite direction, banning or restricting the use of any sort of vaccine "passport" or a vaccination certification or verification system.

"The residents of our state should not be required by the government to share their private medical information," said Arizona's Republican Gov. Doug Ducey last month. "Vaccination is up to each individual, not the government."

But public health experts point out that Americans have long been required to provide proof of vaccination in certain circumstances, such as to attend school and for international travel.

"We have a lot of precedent for requiring vaccinations for people, recognizing the value of those vaccinations, especially when they're involved with international travel," says Harvard's Leonard Marcus.

"This has become so politicized an issue that it's very difficult for us as a country to do the right thing," he adds.

Nonetheless, a majority of Americans support the concept of requiring vaccination for travel, according to a recent Gallop poll .

Megan Brenan of Gallop says "57% of Americans said that in order to travel by airplane, they would favor requiring people to show proof that they've been vaccinated."

Goats and Soda

The vaccine passport debate actually began in 1897 over a plague vaccine.

And there is even wider support for some sort of vaccination verification system globally. A recent Ipsos poll on behalf of the World Economic Forum finds that about 3 in 4 adults across 28 countries agree that COVID-19 vaccine passports should be required of travelers to enter their country.

With no uniform way for American travelers to prove to foreign governments that they've been vaccinated, some airlines are trying to step up and develop digital platforms including smartphone apps that will tell customers exactly what documentation they need to provide to enter the country they are going to and a way to upload that documentation.

"Because the requirements for entry differ by almost every single country and, in some cases, by the region within a country, the customer would like to have the peace of mind to know that they comply with those different regulations to come in," says Preston Peterson, director of Customer Experience Innovation at American Airlines. He says their app, called VeriFly, developed with its mobile health partner Daon, provides a platform for the traveler to know that they're good to go.

"A customer can submit their documentation, have it verified and then they receive a green check mark, or effectively, an OK to travel status, that we as the airline trust, the customer can trust and then they know they're ready to go."

Other airlines are developing similar apps or partnering with companies and organizations to create such platforms. The International Air Transport Association, an airline industry group, has developed an app called the IATA Travel Pass that's being tested by more than 30 airlines globally, including British Airways, Emirates, Japan Airlines and Qantas. A nonprofit platform called Common Pass is being used by JetBlue, United, Lufthansa and Cathay Pacific, among others.

The governments of the European Union, China, Japan and the United Kingdom are all working on their own digital vaccination certificates for international travel.

The World Health Organization is working on creating standards for developing "Smart Vaccination Certificates" but also advises countries against requiring proof of vaccination, citing unequal global distribution of vaccines.

All of these efforts underscore the lack of one central national and international system to verify vaccination status, so it will likely take some time for governments, airlines and travelers to sort out exactly what will be accepted where as proof of vaccination.

If summer travel takes you to another country, make sure you've got one of the best international phone plans as your traveling companion. In the U.S., all the major wireless carriers offer some kind of travel benefit with their best cell phone plans , but they also have supplementary packages for travelers to augment the data plan you already have in place. The best international phone plans will let you make calls and browse the web when you're in another country (though there might be a fee on top of your normal monthly rate, depending on which carrier you use). Different plans might provide coverage in specific countries, and how long you plan on traveling could also impact your choice of plans. Your method of travel — be it by plane or cruise ship — also affects which plan is best for you.

All of these are things for globetrotters to consider when shopping for wireless coverage. You're going to want one of the best unlimited data plans since they tend to offer the most travel-related perks. If you haven't travelled internationally in a while, it's smart to double-check what options are out there since the best phone carriers have overhauled their plans and packages available to travelers.

Here’s a look at the travel policies and perks for the three top U.S carriers along with information on Google Fi, which offers a plan that definitely appeals to frequent travelers.

T-Mobile international phone plans

T-Mobile has shed some of its plans, though the good news is that most of the remaining options provide some benefits for overseas travel. Subscribe to Go5G, Go5G Plus or Go5G Next, and you enjoy unlimited data and texting in more than 215 countries around the world. If you want to place or receive calls, you’ll be subject to the local rate depending on where you want to go. You don’t need to notify T-Mobile of your travel for your overseas benefits to kick in.

T-Mobile Go5G Plus Plan | Unlimited Data | $90/month T-Mobile's Go5G Plus plan has the edge over the cheaper Go5G option, with better travel benefits. You get 15GB of data when you traavel in Mexico and Canada (compared to 10GB for Go5G), and you also enjoy texting and Wi-Fi on any flight where internet is available. Even better, you can use your data in 215-plus countries at no extra cost. The first 5GB of data you use use will be high-speed data (with 5G speeds supported where available). Go5G subscribers only get high-speed data in 11 European countries; otherwise, data speeds are capped at 256 kbps.

Travel perks in current plans: As part of T-Mobile's Beyond Connected program, data speeds now reach 256 kbps when you're overseas. If you subscribe to the standard Go5G plan ($75 for a single line) and you're in one of 11 European countries, you can enjoy 5GB of high-speed data every month, thanks to a partnership with T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telecom.

The perk gets better when you upgrade to Go5G Plus, which starts at $90/month for one line of data). That plan treats you to 5GB of high-speed data in 215 countries.

Go5G Next, T-Mobile's most expensive plan at $100/month for a single line, has the same travel benefits as Go5G Plus, but adds the ability to upgrade your phone every year. If that's not important to you, stick with Go5G Plus and pay $10 less each month on your wireless bill.

T-Mobile customers can take advantage of free Wi-Fi on American, Delta, Alaska Airlines and United flights. Go5G Plus subscribers get full texting and Wi-Fi with streaming during flights, where wireless is available. If you opt for Go5G, you're covered on four flights per year with full streaming, plus unlimited texting; after those four flights, you can stream one hour of video. Delta SkyMiles members also get free Wi-Fi on domestic U.S. flights courtesy of T-Mobile — even if they get their wireless service from another carrier.

In Mexico and Canada, T-Mobile allows you to use up to 10GB of data if you're a Go5G customer; speeds are slowed to 128kbps after that. Go5G Plus members enjoy 15GB, with speeds slowing to 256kbps if you use more than that amount.

T-Mobile includes travel benefits in two of its remaining senior plans, with identical travel perks between the $100 Go5G Plus 55 option and the $120 Go5G Next 55 plan. (Note that those monthly prices cover two lines of data; one line of either Plus or Next cost $70 and $80, respectively.) Travel perks include high-speed data and text when you travel abroad, plus unlimited in-flight connectivity. When you travel to Canada or Mexico, you get 15GB of high-speed data. Both plans also include a year's membership to AAA for road travel in the U.S.

If you opt for T-Mobile's lower cost Essentials unlimited plan, you'll get 2G roaming in Canada and Mexico, but have to pay for data elsewhere.

Trip-specific passes: T-Mobile offers International Pass options for travelers who want high-speed data during lengthier stays overseas. A 5GB International Pass gives you that much high-speed data along with unlimited calling for 10 days. It costs $35. T-Mobile's $50 International Pass increases high-speed data to 15GB and extends the length of the pass to 30 days. The carrier also offers a $5 daily pass that gives you 512MB of high-speed data, and unlimited calling between the 215 or so Simple Global destinations. 

Cruise rates: Pricing on cruises will vary according to which cruise you’re taking. You can check T-Mobile’s site to see what your pricing will be.

Verizon international phone plans

Verizon phones generally work all over the world, especially if you've got a phone built in the last few years. But where you travel significantly influences how much you’ll have to pay. As for which is the best Verizon phone plan for travelers, that all depends on how frequently you go overseas. There's a clear choice for regular globetrotters, but Verizon's less expensive offerings allow you to tack on travel benefits, too.

Verizon Unlimited Ultimate | Unlimited Data | $90/month Verizon's Unlimited Ultimate plan offers the most benefits for world travelers. Verizon promises "full international connectivity," meaning you'll be able to use talk and text for free when overseas; you also get 10GB of high-speed data every month that you can use in other countries. Unlimited Ultimate is Verizon's most expensive plan, so unless you take frequent trips, you may be better served by Unlimited Plus ($80/month for one line) or Unlimited Welcome ($65/month). Those two plans can add on a $10/month Travel Pass options that provides three days of talk, text and data when you're overseas. You can drop the Travel Pass add-on from your plan in months were you don't need it. Verizon lets family plans mix and match lines so one person can get Unlimited Ultimate, while the others subscribe to the cheaper options.

Travel perks in current plans: Of Verizon's three unlimited plans, the best for frequent travelers is the Unlimited Ultimate option, which lets you use talk and text in other countries just like you would in the U.S. You also get 10GB of high-speed data to use overseas every month.

Unfortunately, Unlimited Ultimate is Verizon's most expensive plan, costing $90 a month for one line. (And that's after a discount for enrolling autopay.) There are cheaper options — Unlimited Welcome and Unlimited Plus — that include travel perks. Both plans let you text internationally to 200-plus countries. You can also use LTE data when traveling in Mexico and Canada. You're limited to 0.5GB of data consumption per day in those two countries before your speeds are slowed to 2G, and you can't use more than half of your talk, text and data in those countries over a 60-day period.

In addition to the base Welcome Unlimited and Unlimited Plus packages, you can opt for $10 monthly add-ons for your Verizon plan — some covering streaming services, another providing hotspot data and so on. The relevant package is Verizon's $10/month 3 TravelPass Days add-on, which saves you $20 a month on travel benefits as you pick up three passes during monthly billing cycles. You can accrue up to 36 passes for using talk, text and data when traveling overseas.

Unlimited Welcome starts at $65/month for one line, while Unlimited Plus is $80. If you have a family plan, you can mix and match so that different lines of data subscribe to different plans — helpful if there's one person in the family who travels a lot and would benefit from the Unlimited Ultimate perks.

Trip-specific passes: Let's talk a little bit more about the TravelPass . It's Verizon's daily option for international coverage, and it’ll cost you $5 per day per device for each day you’re out of the country if you travel to Mexico or Canada and don't have an unlimited plan. In 185 other countries — including China, France and Germany — Verizon charges $10 per device per day. TravelPass gets you 2GB of 5G data, and unlimited data at 3G speeds after that; the passes also come with unlimited talk and text.

If you know you’ll be traveling for a bit more time, consider Verizon’s monthly option, which the carrier recommends for trips lasting at least 10 days. International Monthly Plans at Verizon cost $100/month, but in exchange, you get 250 minutes of talk, unlimited texts and 20GB of high-speed data. (Use that, and you get unlimited data at 3G speeds.)

Verizon also offers pay-as-you-go pricing for international travel. You’ll pay 99 cents per minute in Canada and Mexico, Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands. Rates go up to $1.79 in 130-plus countries and $2.99 in 80 other places. Each text message you send will cost you 50 cents, and each received text will set you back 5 cents. Your data will be charged at a rate of $2.05 per megabyte no matter where you are.

Cruise rates: Pay-as-you go rates on cruise ships cost $1.99 for each minute of talk and 50 cents for every sent text message. You’ll pay 5 cents per message received. Verizon has a data plan for cruise passengers, too, with $30/day giving you 500MB of data plus unlimited texting and 50 minutes of talk time. For in-flight connectivity, you can opt for the same pay-as-you-go rates for cruise trips or you can pay $20 per day for unlimited data.

AT&T international phone plans

AT&T also comes with varied international pricing depending on where you want to go. Canada and Mexico travel is covered in many top AT&T plans, and if you pay up for the Unlimited Premium option, you can use your plan in many Central and South American countries. Traveling elsewhere? Then you had best look into AT&T's travel passes.

AT&T Unlimited Premium| Unlimited Data | $85.99/month It's AT&T's most expensive unlimited plan, but Unlimited Premium has the best perk for travelers — you can use your talk, text and data at no extra cost in 20 Latin American countries.  As with other AT&T unlimited options, you also enjoy talk, text and data coverage when traveling in Canada and Mexico.

Travel perks in current plans: If you’re heading to Mexico or Canada, AT&T already covers all of your voice, data and text with its four different unlimited plans — Starter, Extra, Premium and the entry-level Value Plus option. AT&T offers a lone tiered data plan with 4GB of data that you can use in Canada and Mexico (though roaming may be at 2G speeds). Both unlimited and tiered data plans feature unlimited texting to 120-plus countries.

The Unlimited Premium plan is the best option for travelers headed to the Americas, as you'll be able to enjoy unlimited text, talk and data at no additional cost in 20 Central and South American countries. 

If you do a lot of international calling from home, AT&T offers unlimited calling to 85-plus countries from the U.S. for $15 per month for each line. Calls to another 140-plus countries get discounted rates under this plan.

Trip-specific passes: For anyone off to Europe, the Caribbean, Latin America or the Asia Pacific region on a short jaunt, AT&T recommends its $12-a-day International Day Pass, which comes with unlimited talk and text and data governed by your plan. That $12 rate reflects a $2 price hike, though service is still available in 210-plus countries. Each device you take overseas needs its own Day Pass, but you can extra phones for $6 a day, on top of the first device.

You'll never have to pay for more than 10 days of day passes on any one bill, even if your trip lasts longer. International Day Passes also kick in automatically when you use your phone abroad — you get a text message letting you know you're covered.

Cruise rates: On cruises , AT&T offers a $60/month Cruise Basic plan that covers 100 minutes of talk and unlimited texting while also offering 100MB of data. Need more of everything? Then try the Cruise Plus plan ($100/month), which includes 1GB of data on top of unlimited talk and text. 

Google Fi international phone plans

If you do a lot of international traveling, don't ignore Google Fi Wireless , the wireless service set up by Google that uses cellular towers of T-Mobile and US Cellular to provide coverage. International travel is built into two of Google Fi's plans — the Unlimited Plus and Flexible options.

Google Unlimited Plus| Unlimited Data | $65/month The Unlimited Plus plan is the way to go with Google Fi, as you can use your data at no extra cost when traveling overseas. Google Fi customers who pay by the gigabyte of data used are also eligible for this perk.

Travel perks in current plans: You've got two options with Google Fi — tiered data through the company's Flexible plan or a pair of unlimited data options. Flexible coverage costs $20 a month for talk and text plus $10 for each GB of data you use. (Data usage is rounded off to the nearest megabyte so you only pay for the data you consume.) Google stops charging you after you use 6GB a month, meaning you'll never pay more than $80. 

If you find unlimited data plans more appealing, Google has you covered there, too — it also offers a $65 Unlimited Plus option that rolls in unlimited talk, text and data. Unlimited Plus subscribers now get a year of YouTube Premium as a perk. 

The real benefit to either Unlimited Plus or Flexible is that those plans cover you when you're traveling in 200-plus countries. When you're overseas, Google Fi charges the same rate for data usage, whether you're on an unlimited data plan or paying by the gigabyte. Voice calls cost 20 cents (though calls placed over Wi-Fi are free) and you get unlimited SMS messaging. 

Alas, Google's $50/month Simply Unlimited plan is not eligible for the free data perk when traveling. That said, all three of Google Fi's plans let you use talk, text and data in Mexico and Canada.

Google Fi is even more appealing now that Google has opened up service to all phones, including iPhones. Note that phones optimized for Google Fi — Google's Pixel phones (currently the Pixel 8 , Pixel 8 Pro , Pixel Fold and Pixel 8a )  along with a selection of Samsung phones and Motorola budget devices — can switch seamlessly between cellular networks and Google's Wi-Fi hotspots, while other phones cannot.

Trip-specific passes: Unlike the other carriers here, Google Fi doesn't offer travel passes for extended trips. Your only option is to get coverage through the Flexible and Unlimited Plus plans.

Cruise rates: Google Fi is not available when you're at sea — only when you're on land in one of the 200-plus countries covered by the carrier.

Other international phone plan options

Discount carriers typically don't provide much in the way of benefits for travelers, but there are some exceptions. The most noteworthy alternative is Visible , which has expanded the travel perks for subscribers to its $45/month Visible Plus plan .

Visible is owned by Verizon and uses its parent company's network for coverage. The Visible Plus plan features unlimited data, including access to Verizon's high-speed 5G network. Travelers will be particularly interested in the unlimited talk, text and 2GB of daily data available through Visible Plus when traveling in Canada and Mexico. Visible Plus customers are also eligible for one free Global Pass day per month, in which they can use talk, text and data at no charge in 140 countries. Globla Passes normally cost $10.

Best international phone plan: Device compatibility and eSims

Traveling overseas used to mean checking to see if your phone would be compatible once you set foot in another country. But those days are drawing to a close now that 3G networks are shutting down, eliminating much of the distinction between phones that work on either GSM and CDMA. If you've got a recent smartphone that connects to LTE, chances are strong it's going to work just fine in other countries. (You still might want to confirm that your phone works on the LTE bands available in the country you're heading to prior to your trip, just to avoid any unpleasant surprises.)

Many phones now support electronic SIM cards or eSIM technology, where you no longer need to swap in a local SIM card to make your smartphone work with an overseas network. (Since the iPhone 14 , Apple devices sold in the U.S. only feature eSIM support — that includes the newer iPhone 15 models.) One of our editors took an international trip using an eSIM for her phone and found it easy to setup and use with a local network — in fact, she plans to use the eSIM approach on all future travel. 

That said, not every country supports eSIM. And depending on your phone carrier in the U.S., you might already have options that cover your phone use in other countries.

International phone plans: What about 5G?

As noted above, many of the plans that offer international travel either have you connect at whatever speed is available locally or at a reduced speed in cases where you're drawing from your own data plan. But what if you've got a 5G phone that can connect to faster networks overseas?

For the most part, we'd expect your phone to operate as before, either at whatever speed the local network offers or a capped speed if that's part of your carrier's travel plans. However, in a few instances, U.S. phone carriers have started making deals with overseas wireless providers that allow their customers to access 5G speeds when roaming. You should check with your carrier for information about the country you're going to travel in.

Charisma Mangahas has “been a lover of Disney ever since I was a kid.”

Being diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome , a rare nerve-damaging disorder, in 2018 changed the way she experienced the parks. A recent overhaul of Disney’s policies for guests with disabilities is changing it again.

“I was recently denied the Disability Access Services here at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure,” the Magic Key (annual pass) holder said in a video that’s gotten 1.7 million views on TikTok and been shared across other social media.

She’s not the only one who no longer qualifies for Disability Access Services. Now more than 23,000 signees are petitioning for “immediate action .”

What is Disability Access Service? 

Disney’s Disability Access Service is one of the various accommodations available for guests with disabilities at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, which have historically been known for their accessibility. The service doesn’t cut wait times, but it allows guests to wait for rides outside of a traditional line by joining the queue virtually, waiting out the designated time elsewhere in the park, and then heading to the attraction during a specified return window for a shorter in-person wait. 

To qualify, guests must go through an interview before their park visit.

What is eligible for Disability Access Services?

Disney World and Disneyland’s websites say the service is intended for “guests who, due to a developmental disability such as autism or a similar disorder, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period of time.”

However, before the change – which took effect on May 20 at Disney World and June 18 at Disneyland – the resorts simply said it was intended “to assist guests who have difficulty tolerating extended waits in a conventional queue environment due to a disability.”

Why did Disney change Disability Access Services?

Disability Access Services had become the most requested service at Disneyland and Disney World in recent years with a user volume eclipsing the program’s intended audience and impacting waits and experiences for guests needing the accommodations.

Neither Disneyland nor Disney World has responded to USA TODAY’s requests for comment on this story, but when changes were announced in early April, Disney said, “Disney is dedicated to providing a great experience for all guests, including those with disabilities, which is why we are so committed to delivering a wide range of innovative support services aimed at helping our guests with disabilities have a wonderful time when visiting our theme parks.” 

Disney also increased the number of specially trained cast members to help guests with access needs find the right accommodations. 

What other accommodations are available?

Accommodations include but are not limited to, American Sign Language interpretation, Disney Handheld Devices that provide captions and visual descriptions for guests with hearing impairment, braille guidebooks and maps, sensory guides for attractions, and at Disneyland, Location Return Times for guests with mobility devices or other physical needs that can’t be accommodated by older, non-wheelchair accessible attraction queues.

Some guests, like Mangahas, are offered a return to queue , allowing them to “briefly step out of the standby queue and then rejoin their party” when needed, according to Disneyland’s website. “Every attraction has a defined process to support this option based on a person’s disability while the rest of the party remains in the queue.” Guests are directed to speak to cast members at each attraction to ask for specific details.

No longer qualified

Mangahas said she was shocked to learn she no longer qualified for Disability Access Services.

She recalled a cast member telling her, ”You weren't denied the DAS. You were provided other accommodations, and it's up to you to take it … If you like, you can purchase the Genie+ .”

One reason she said she can’t wait in long lines is because she has a trach that needs to be suctioned when she gets congested.

“Getting suctioned in a conventional line isn't what I would feel comfortable with. It’s very loud. It's an intrusive process,” she said.

Getting out of line can also be tricky because she uses a wheelchair. 

“I don't want to run over people. My wheelchair is kind of bulky. I don't want to hurt anyone, of course. And I don't want to have to go through group after group after group asking them, ‘Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me,'” she added.

Getting dirty looks

Disney World annual pass holder Michelle S. knows how that feels after her kids were offered a return to queue instead of Disability Access Services.

“When my daughters got joined up with the rest of us, they felt bad. ‘People gave us dirty looks, and people were being mean to us, and people said that we were cheating, Mom,’” she recalled them saying. Her last name is being withheld due to safety concerns.

Michelle explained all four of her adoptive children, ranging in age from 11 to 15, have PTSD from circumstances before joining her family. Additionally, she said her 15-year-old has auditory processing disorder , which causes her anxiety and panic attacks, and her 11-year-old has reactive attachment disorder , so she can’t go off on her own if she needs to step away. 

“I wish that they could give you like placards, like a little sign you can carry when you're walking past people in line,” Michelle said. She also wished she didn’t have to explain her kids’ needs at every attraction.

“There's more things that they could do to be accommodating,” she added. “If they have imagineers, then imagine something.”

Don't stare, but don't ignore: What travelers with disabilities wish fellow travelers would do instead

‘It’s not safe for me’

“I can enjoy myself in short periods of time with appropriate accommodations,” said fellow Disney World annual pass holder and disabled veteran Stacie Hardy. But “when too many people are around me, it sets off the PTSD, which can and has in the past led to severe anxiety attacks, which can and often do lead to a seizure.”

Hardy said she suffered a traumatic brain injury while serving in the Navy and post-traumatic stress disorder, then a stroke a few years ago that led to a seizure disorder, and was diagnosed with vascular dementia this spring. She previously qualified for Disability Access Services, but after the policy change, was offered return to queue and rider switch .

“Neither one of those options work for me, especially because it's not safe for me to be out there (alone),” she said. She usually goes to the parks with her husband. “What if I have an issue when he's not there?”

Before, they only went to the parks when her symptoms allowed. Now she’s not sure she’ll go back at all, even though part of the reason they moved to Central Florida was to be near Disney. “I don't know if I ultimately will or not, but (I’m) so upset about the whole thing that it's completely soured Disney,” she said. 

Setting limits

Disney World annual pass holder and Disneyland Magic Key holder Jamie Solomon said the whole new Disibility Access Services process was incredibly stressful for him.

He said his father had Lewy Body Dementia , but after years of neuropsych tests, doctors still haven’t quite nailed down his own dementia diagnosis. “They told me they can't tell which one it is until I have an autopsy,” he said. One thing he knows is being in crowded lines in enclosed spaces is “unbearable” for him.

He said he was lucky to be approved, but he still has an issue with the new Disability Access Services policies only allowing three other guests to share the service user’s benefits when visiting the parks together. The only exception is for immediate family.

“I don't have a traditional family,” Solomon said, noting that his parents have passed away and he’s not in touch with his sister. Instead, he has a “family of choice.”

“A family is a family,” he said. “I’d still like to be able to come with my full-sized family.”

Calls for change

A Change.org petition by a group called DAS Defenders is calling on Disney to adjust its policies.

“It is imperative that Disney recognizes the broad-reaching impact of its decisions and takes immediate steps to rectify this injustice,” the petition reads.

Mangahas said she wasn’t aware of the petition when she made her now-viral video, but having previously given a TedTalk on adapting , she’s open to compromise.

“If (Disney) cannot commit to a big change, at least we can work together so that more people who were denied DAS, who need the DAS system, can qualify and receive the service,” she said. Until then, “I'm going to make do with what was given.”

More than 3 million travelers pass through US airport security in a day for the first time

More than 3 million people passed through U.S. airport security on Sunday, the first time that number of passengers have been screened in a single day as travel surges, according to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

The record, which was widely predicted to happen at some point over the July Four holiday weekend, topped the June 23 mark of more than 2.99 million screened passengers. Eight of the 10 busiest days in TSA’s history have come this year as the number of travelers tops pre-pandemic levels.

TSA was created after the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and replaced a collection of private security companies that were hired by airlines. The agency operates under the Department of Homeland Security, which said that agents on Sunday checked 35 passengers every second.

While Americans continue to grapple with inflation, travel costs including airline tickets and hotel prices have eased significantly from a year ago. Hotel rooms were 1.2% cheaper in May compared with a year ago, according to recent government inflation data. Those costs have been trending lower since the beginning of the year.

While most U.S. airlines lost money in the first quarter — traditionally the weakest time of year for travel — they were all expecting a summer of full planes.

This spring, American and Southwest said they expected solid second-quarter profits. They joined Delta Air Lines and United Airlines in giving an upbeat outlook for the April-through-June period, which includes the start of peak season for carriers.

Delta reports its second-quarter earnings on Thursday, with analysts predicting sales of $15.5 billion, nearly $1 billion more than the same period a year ago. Next week, United and American issue their quarterly results, with Wall Street forecasting higher revenue from a year ago for both carriers.

Increasingly full planes since the pandemic shut travel down four years ago has brought some downside for airlines: complaints.

The Transportation Department said last week that it received nearly 97,000 complaints in 2023, up from about 86,000 the year before. The department said there were so many complaints that it took until July to sort through the filings and compile the figures.

That’s the highest number of complaints about airlines since 2020 when airlines were slow to give customers refunds after the coronavirus pandemic shut down air travel.

The Transportation Department said the increase in complaints was partly the result of more travelers knowing about their rights and the ability to file a complaint. Airlines receive many more complaints from travelers who don’t know how or don’t bother to complain to the government, but the carriers don’t release those numbers.

Beryl maps show path and landfall forecast of storm as it reaches Texas

After hitting Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Beryl  churned across the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall over the middle Texas Gulf Coast as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Beryl began weakening after making landfall and was downgraded to a tropical depression later Monday.

The storm blew past the Cayman Islands and Jamaica last week, initially making landfall over the island of Carriacou in Grenada while tearing through the Caribbean , strengthening at times to a Category 5 hurricane — the  strongest rating .

What is Beryl's projected path?

The hurricane center issued an update Monday evening saying Beryl was bringing flooding and the risk of tornadoes across portions of eastern Texas, western Louisiana and Arkansas.

As of 8 p.m. EDT, all  tropical storm warnings  and storm surge warnings for Texas had been lifted.

Beryl's eye "will move over eastern Texas today, then move through the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday," the hurricane center said. "Steady weakening is forecast, and Beryl is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone on Tuesday."

"An additional 4 to 8 inches of rainfall with localized amounts of 12 inches is expected across portions of eastern Texas through tonight," the hurricane center said Monday evening. "Considerable flash and urban flooding as well as minor to isolated major river flooding is expected. Heavy rainfall of 3 to 5 inches, with locally higher amounts, is expected across portions of far southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, and southern Missouri through Tuesday."

Before reaching the U.S., Beryl made landfall in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Friday as a Category 2 hurricane, just northeast of the resort town of Tulum, before weakening to a tropical storm and moving back into the Gulf.

Beryl became the  first hurricane  of the 2024  Atlantic hurricane season  at the end of June and rapidly strengthened. It was the first major hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles on record for June, according to Philip Klotzbach, Colorado State University hurricane researcher.

Brian McNoldy, a tropical meteorology researcher for the University of Miami, told the AP that warm waters fueled Beryl, with ocean heat content in the deep Atlantic the highest on record for this time of year.

Beryl also set records  as the first June hurricane ever to hit Category 4, the farthest east a storm has ever hit Category 4, and the first storm before September to go from tropical depression to major hurricane in under 48 hours, CBS News weather producer David Parkinson reported.

Beryl was also the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin and was only the second Category 5 storm recorded in July since 2005, according to the hurricane center.

Air travel is getting worse. That’s what passengers are telling the US government

WASHINGTON (AP) — Air travel got more miserable last year, if the number of consumer complaints filed with the U.S. government is any measure.

The Transportation Department said Friday that it received nearly 97,000 complaints in 2023, up from about 86,000 the year before. The department said there were so many complaints that it took until July to sort through the filings and compile the figures.

That’s the highest number of consumer complaints about airlines since 2020, when airlines were slow to give customers refunds after the coronavirus pandemic shut down air travel.

The increase in complaints came even as airlines canceled far fewer U.S. flights — 116,700, or 1.2% of the total, last year, compared with about 210,500, or 2.3%, in 2022 , according to FlightAware data. However, delays remained stubbornly high last year, at around 21% of all flights.

So far this year, cancellations remain relatively low — about 1.3% of all flights — but delays are still running around 21%.

More than two-thirds of all complaints last year dealt with U.S. airlines , but a quarter covered foreign airlines. Most of the rest were about travel agents and tour operators.

Complaints about treating passengers with disabilities rose by more than one-fourth compared with 2022. Complaints of discrimination, while small in number, also rose sharply. Most were about race or national origin.

The Transportation Department said the increase in complaints was partly the result of more consumers knowing about their rights and the ability to file a complaint. The department said it helped Southwest Airlines customers get more than $600 million in refunds and reimbursements after the carrier canceled nearly 17,000 flights during December 2022. Southwest also paid a $35 million fine .

Airlines receive many more complaints from travelers who don’t know how or don’t bother to complain to the government, but the carriers don’t release those numbers.

The Transportation Department is modernizing its complaint-taking system, which the agency says will help it do a better job overseeing the airline industry. However, the department now releases complaint numbers many months late. It did not issue figures for the second half of 2023 until Friday.

More than three million people passed through United States airport security on Sunday, the first time that number of passengers have been screened in a single day as travel surges, according to the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

But [overtourism] was already recognized at least 2-3 years before the pandemic,” he said in an email, noting that residents have also put up “No tourists welcome” signs in neighborhoods. “What has happened in Barcelona will spread to more tourist-crowded places beyond Europe,” he added.

In Japan, one town sought to install a huge screen at a popular photo spot in front of Mount Fuji to stop tourists from taking selfies and causing traffic jams. Last year, the Greek government imposed a new timed ticketing system for the ancient Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with a visitor cap of 20,000 people per day. Venice experimented with extracting extra fees from tourists, while Amsterdam restricted the construction of new hotels.

“I think the key point here is about sustainable tourism development and sustainable management of tourist flows within a country,” said J.J. Zhang, a tourism geographer at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

As a possible solution, Zhang suggested determining the capacity of popular sites and controlling traffic, such as by “using technology where real-time data can be communicated to tourists such that overcrowded places could be avoided,” he said.

But Bob McKercher, a professor in tourism at the University of Queensland in Australia, raised another issue: The majority of tourists worldwide are domestic. “So while overtourism may be a long-standing issue,” he said, “can you really stop people from visiting their own country?”
