Silversun Pickups (formed in 2002) is an American shoegaze and alternative rock band who rose to prominence in 2005 with their debut EP “Pikul”, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Originally named A Couple of Couples, the band was initially comprised of lead guitarist Brian Aubert, drummer Elvira Gonzales, bassist Nikki Monninger, and rhythm guitarist Jack Kennedy. Gonzales and Kennedy subsequently left however with Christopher Guanlao and Joe Lester serving as their permanent replacements. At the same time the group changed their name to the Silversun Pickups and began a period of finding their sound and making early recordings. In July 2006 the band issued their debut EP “Pikul”, garnering a host of warm reviews and significantly raising their profile. Produced by Rod Cervera and dedicated the a friend of the band whom had died, the record spawned the videos “Kissing Families” and “Comeback Kid”.

The following year Silversun Pickups released their debut studio album “Carnavas” on Dangerbird Records. Led by the Top 10 U.S. Modern Rock chart singles “Lazy Eye” and “Well Thought Out Wrinkles”, the record earned critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone and IGN and was supported by widespread touring of the U.S. and the UK. In April 2009 Silversun Pickups released the single “Panic Switch” ahead of their sophomore studio album “Swoon” the same month. Peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, the record also received positive responses from critics, marking their most successful release to date. The subsequent singles “Substitution” and “The Royal We” were released as the Silversun Pickups embarked on their second international tour.

The band’s third full-length “Neck of the Woods” arrived in May 2012, and rose to the top of iTunes’ Top 100 Albums chart the same week. Produced by Jacknife Lee, the record also topped the U.S. Independent Albums chart, and paved the way for the Record Store Day release “Seasick”. Following a North American Tour alongside School of Sevens Bells and Atlas Genius, Monninger temporarilty left the group to give birth, and was replaced by The Happy Hollows’ Sarah Negahdari. The compilation album “The Singles Collection” arrived in January 2014 led by the new single “Cannibal”, followed by the band’s fourth full-length “Better Nature” in September 2015.

Live reviews

Lets get the bloody tiresome comparisons to Smashing Pumpkin’s out of the way. So the name’s not dissimilar, the music does have that wonderful Pumpkins “quiet/loud” trademark running right through it. Oh and they have a lady on bass. Enough. Because as the band fill the tiny stage and the chords of “Well Thought Out Twinkles” come screaming at us, it’s time to get lost in the amazing world of The Silversun Pickups. They have an abundance of fine songs that make you want to shout, shake, nod, dance, and it’s our pleasure to be here tonight, the crowd make that perfectly clear. The fuzzy waves of guitar during “Dream At Tempo 119” spin around the room as the drummer pounds out the rhythm. While at the front we have our eyes on Brian Aubert, the singer/guitarist who engages the crowd with a look of “we’re going to have fun tonight.” Fun was definitely had last night, as he eventually makes conversation with the Social’s punters after “Waste It On”. A day off yesterday before their final UK fling here in Nottingham. Which meant drinks to be had for at least the frontman of the band, Recalling tales of the night before as he caught acts here in the social, followed by a trip to the lemon Tree and Rescue Rooms.“Little Lover’s So Polite” has all the S’ P ups trademarks. The drum patterns, the buzzing, rumbling bass. The blips and squeals from the keyboardist, and the soft vocals mixed with razor edged, teeth vibrating guitars. Some songs build and build into glorious walls of guitar-fuelled feedback (“Lazy Eye”), while maintaining the catchiest, fat tapping beats imaginable. There’s no reason not to soak up every last note and be mesmerized by what we have within touching distance before our very eyes. Normally this venue inspires phrases such as “close up and intimate”, and “see the white’s of their eyes”. Never a more true word written once again this evening for L.A.s Silversun Pickups, to the point that in my position at stage front, I watched as the intriguing singer/guitarist lost a sole of one of his very worn shoes! On this performance, this intimate scenario will be one to cherish in the gig memory bank.

I will never miss a chance to see Silversun Pickups live!! Not just because I have a major crush on their singer, Brian Aubert, but because they just rock out on stage!! Nikki, their bassist, looked elegant as always. She always seems to wear such a stylish dress but I love how she's always jumping around on stage while still maintaining that girlish charm. Their drummer, Chris, has shiny, long black hair that thrashes around as he smashes on his drum set. Joe, their keyboardist, just looks like a laid back guy with his plaid shirt and his fancy fedora. Brian exudes the indie rocker look with his skinny jeans, boots, and leather jacket. His hair swoops across to the right side of his face, until mid set where it's dripping off sweat. He never stays on one area of the stage for long, unless he is on the mic. His vocals range from soft and a bit raspy to him bellowing his heart out. A good example of this would be their song "Lazy Eye," which is their song I first fell in love with. Brian has a bit of a feminine quality to his voice but that's just one of the things that really drew me to them! "Panic Switch" was the song that got the audience really going! It's intense and just gets you moving along with them on stage! Nikki's backup vocals is so beautifully haunting in it! I get chills just thinking about it now! Not only are they fantastic musicians, but they are so much fun to hang out with after their show! Nikki was super nice, Joe is as laid back as he seems on stage, Chris was a pleasure to talk to, and getting to spend time with Brian was the highlight of it all!! He saw my purse that said "I <3 NERDS" and said to me "I'm a nerd." So we had a long talk about his time at Harry Potter world and we sang songs from the movie Labyrinth together! It was just a few days prior to my birthday and nothing will top this birthday experience for me! Not to mention it's the second time he gave me a kiss on the cheek for my birthday!

The Silversun Pickups are one of my favorite bands. Way back, when I just started to listen to their music they had this performance in Amsterdam that I missed, and until last week there was no opportunity of seeing and hearing them perform live, so I only was acquainted with their studio work and some live footage shared online. Needless to say I was eager to visit one of their concerts, so when I got the news they would do a performance in Amsterdam I immediately ordered a ticket. And luckily so, for it was awesome!

Besides their fascinating and beautiful music one huge reason that contributed to my positive experience was their enthusiastic live performance. Namely Brian Aubert (guitar, vocals) did kind and funny intermezzos. Also during the songs I found him to be a real performer staying closely in touch with his audience. Nikki Monninger (bass, vocals) was quite an impressive appearance full of glimmer rock. Christopher Guanlao (drums) is a real craftsman. All the time he was spot on and one concentrated piece of energy, impossible not to be impressed by his skills! While perhaps Joe Lester (keyboard) stood less in the spotlight it was clear he did his fair share in the musical experience.

The acoustic qualities of the concert hall in combination with the sound settings were great. It was possible to hear the whole range of the music. At rock concerts it is not uncommon to get lost in a loud and wild haze of tones, luckily not this time.

Because the concert hall wasn't that large I experienced a pleasant kind of intimacy.

Long story short... I look back at a great and entertaining evening, perhaps too short ;-) If you like dreamy but intense rock music and nice performances you should really try one of their concerts your self.

I attended the Silversun Pickups concert on December 4 at the Roxian Theater in McKees Rocks, PA. It was my first time seeing Silversun Pickups live and needless to say, it did not disappoint. I had been a fan of the band for at least a decade and felt lucky to finally have an opportunity to listen to them up close and personal. They were awesome. They came out with a lot of energy out of the gates and that energy and enthusiasm on-stage continued for the entirety of the set. The talent of the band was on display throughout, precision-playing at its best: howling guitars, rolling bass lines, and thunderous, tone-setting drums permeated the stage and the acoustics in the building allowed for the sound to really resonate. The band looked like they were having a lot of fun and the crowd responded accordingly. Their setlist reflected the longevity and diversity of their catalogue and was the perfect mix of old and new. I was extremely impressed with Brian’s guitar-playing prowess. He spoke with his guitar and his lyrics and I came away appreciating his skill and that if his band mates that much more by the end of the night. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the show, I became an even bigger fan of the band during and afterwards, and I intend to see them again whenever they return to Pittsburgh.

The show was fantastic with a good set and a nice mix of songs. The concert lasted about 90-minutes, which is a bit short. However, Brian's arm is injured so I think playing for as long as he did was fine.

One thing to note is after the show myself and others went to meet the band when they were leaving the venue. Brian was VERY intoxicated, high, or a mixture of both and was not pleasant to be around. At one point when my friend was trying to take a photo of us, Brian snatched my phone out of his hands, put it on the sidewalk, and forcefully slid it across the cement. Luckily I had a case to protect my brand new phone, but his behavior was uncalled for and most-definitely rude. The shitty thing is if he did damage my phone, would he offer to fix it or do something about it? I highly doubt it.

Chris, Joe, and Nickki were all a pleasure to meet and they all took time out for photos and autographs to those who asked.

My advice for anyone looking to meet the band is to be weary of Brian and absolutely keep your phone out of his reach unless you want it damaged.

The show, as always, was amazing. The fact that it was to benefit Puerto Rico makes them and the show THAT much more special. Meeting them was a real treat, our seats were insanely awesome, and they always put on a phenomenal show. Their energy, music, and talent just blows me away every time. Silversun Pickups have been my and my husband's favorite band for the better part of a decade and every time we see them just reaffirms it. This show was definitely the one where they had the most fun.

Thank you for your music and always being amazing, Silversun! And thank you especially for helping to take care of our own people down in Puerto Rico when the jerks in charge won't. We are all the balance <3

These musicians are an absolute favorite to see live, no matter the venue- you see, they really enjoy & are the living expression of their music, as it is their obvious joy. The energies they attract in sharing this joy are an easy going & relaxed peoples out for the shear pleasure of sound & movement Silversun pumps out with controlled abandon, They also have a knack of picking up the crowds vibe & throwing it back out tenfold & with relish; They're happy performing their art, I'm happy listening with both body & mind. I always come away from a Silversun soire' satisfied & completely at ease...a most excellent evening indeed...!! Jono

I have lived in SoCal for the last 16 years. Tried to see this band. Finally did with a move to Asheville, NC. I have to say of all the hundreds, yes, hundreds I have seen over the last 40 years. This band ranks with the best!

Great venue, Oranage Peel, great appreciative crowd, outstanding performance. Some goods bands are better in person. SSP are an incredible live band. I categorize them as 21st century punk-rock fusion. Great tunes, killer bass, badass drums, solid keyboard. Brian Aubert is an artist. Songs he created & then the licks to back it up...it's his band.

If you can see them you will have a moment. Trust me.

Simply Amazing! Best show I've seen in quite some time... "Silversun" did NOT disappoint! Joywave also killed it! They may have a new fan because of this performance. (...very likely, many new fans). I, myself, not being a very big fan of "FOALS" was still pretty impressed with their performance and tightly honed sound... All in all, it was a truly great time with great music!!! Catch this tour if you get the chance!

I'm a great fan and waited for years for SP to come to The Netherlands. Finally they visited Amsterdam yesterday and it was a great gig. A lot of songs from their new album, as well as a few from thuis album Swoon. Nice interaction with the crowd, not too much talking... I had a great night I hope I won't have to wait for years for their next gig in The Netherlands.

More Information

Silversun Pickups  have always considered their sonic density a source of pride: The Los Angeles band’s four studio full-lengths—including their 2006 gold-selling debut, Carnavas, which spawned the hits “Lazy Eye” and “Well Thought Out Twinkles”—reveal additional sonic gifts with each subsequent spin.

Their fifth album, Widow’s Weeds, also caters to an adventurous, patient group of listeners. Strident acoustic strumming tussles with raging electric riffs, as urgent, precise beats and moody electronic pulses percolate underneath. The band members—which, in addition to Aubert, include bassist Nikki Monninger, drummer Christopher Guanlao and keyboardist Joe Lester—were also in agreement with the album’s starting point (the urgent synth-rocker “Neon Wound”) and closer (the aggressive, throttling “We Are Chameleons”). The band admitted that everything in between, including how the rest of Widow’s Weeds was sequenced and how the album unfolded, often surprised the band.

“We didn’t know exactly which emotional level the lyrics were going to start at,” Aubert says. “I was like, ‘Are they going to be angry, with these crazy times?’ Everything seems so polarized and bizarre and scary. All of these things affect you. And then as they were coming out, it was like, ‘No, they sound like they’re kind of mourning.’ I couldn’t quite put them all together.”

To make sense of these ideas, Silversun Pickups enlisted a long-time friend: producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth). Incredibly enough, this was the first time the band had worked with Vig, even though the idea of collaborating had been floated for years. The timing didn’t feel right until now, Aubert says. “With the ideas that were popping around in my head, it felt like, ‘God, this would be awesome; I think it’s time. If Butch is interested in doing this at all, let’s just call him.'”

Vig and mixer Billy Bush helped Silversun Pickups craft a confident, extroverted album in which every instrument is clearly audible in the mix. Pulsing, Cure-like keyboards hold their own against slashing riffs on “Neon Wound”; antique-sounding violin and cello enhance fragile acoustic strumming on “Straw Man”; and the spring-loaded, glammy “It Doesn’t Matter Why” boasts pogoing beats and needling pizzicato plucks. The album’s more restrained moments also maintain this crispness. “Simpatico” is “the closest we’ll get to a James Bond song,” says Aubert, who immersed himself in movie scores as the album was coalescing. Widow’s Weeds strikes a perfect balance between provocative noise and distortion, and lush, introspective pop tranquility.

The band members also decided not to go overboard layering on instruments and sounds, which contributed to the album’s clearer approach. “We made a conscious effort to rein in the electronic stuff a little bit, and have more pianos and organs,” Lester says. “There’s still synthy stuff on there for sure. But we have strings again, which we hadn’t done for a couple of records. And there’s a lot less sequenced electronics. It was like, ‘Let’s strip the palette a little bit, and see what happens.’ And that goes back to the directness of things.”

Vig’s versatility and songwriting background helped the band shape other songs—including and especially “Don’t Know Yet,” on which glitchy, taut electronic textures segue into explosive choruses drive by brusque drums and noisy guitars. “It has moments of intimacy, but then it really comes alive and big-sounding,” Guanlao says of the song. “That’s all Butch. We would have probably gone a totally different direction if it wasn’t for him hearing that this once-intimate, mellow song can be really boastful and rocking.”

In the end, recording with Vig surpassed the band members’ already-high expectations. “He really listens to each band member, and he puts a great value on each individual, and what they can add to the music,” Monninger says. “It was very collaborative with him. He’s such an easygoing person, and he put everybody at ease.” That camaraderie translated into a studio environment that involved intense and serious hard work unfolding in a jovial, even lighthearted, manner. “We had a really fun time recording this album,” Guanlao says. “He really did get the best out of us. We didn’t want it to end.”

Despite the halcyon studio time, the band members were wrestling with challenges in their personal lives. The album had to be done in two separate blocks of time, since Vig had Garbage tour plans already on the calendar, which left Silversun Pickups with a break between sessions. During that gap in time, Lester’s father passed away. Aubert, meanwhile, found himself in an extremely dark place, for reasons he couldn’t immediately explain.

“We started making this album about mourning, and it’s like, ‘What are you mourning? Are you really mourning politics and stuff like that? Or what is happening?’ I didn’t realize that I was finding myself in this space where I completely tried to take on everything myself. I couldn’t ask for help; I couldn’t let anybody in. That led me to start drinking in a different way, that I never did before.”

As a result, Aubert—who was already feeling “emotionally closed off,” as he puts it—fell into a deep depression. “I didn’t know how to get out of it,” Aubert says. “Finally, I was just like, something big has to happen.” His solution was getting treatment and getting sober during the gap between recording sessions—a decision that immediately improved his mental health and creative outlook.

Unsurprisingly, Aubert also had a much different perspective on his Widow’s Weeds lyrics post-treatment, and understood more what messages he was trying to convey with the album. “The record does have a mourning vibe, but it’s not sad,” he says. “It’s change. It’s growing up, and moving on and letting go of things. And it’s okay to be sad about those things, and mourn them. It’s actually healthy to do so, and take the time to do it. At the end of the day, it’s going to be much better and much more fulfilling when you get through it.”

“When I got sober, and took a little time to myself to move as a human, we came back at the record again,” Aubert says. “Then it was like, now we’re back into the record, and writing again. It was wild. Things are really changing, and I’m starting to emotionally connect to things, and starting to take care of myself. I’m starting to ask for help.”

Aubert’s bandmates also saw an immediate change in him as they reconvened to finish Widow’s Weeds. Guanlao noticed that the vocalist was opening up to him and the rest of the band more, and allowing himself to be more vulnerable, while Monninger observed increased clarity. “I’m really proud of him for coming through all this. He focused so much on the album and put so much of his heart into it—as we all did, but especially coming out of all that, he needed something to really focus on.” Lester also saw big, positive differences in his bandmate. “It was like, ‘okay, this has actually been really good; he’s gotten stuff that has probably been bothering him for a long time sorted out.’”

In a nod to Aubert’s healthier mindset—and in a big change from past working environments—the members of Silversun Pickups welcomed friends and family into the studio as they were recording. “This was the first album where we were open,” Aubert says. “Not just with Butch, but with people around us. We played stuff for people. We never used to before. We’d play a little mixing and things like that. We were too shy.” Creating this kind of social, nurturing atmosphere added levity and accountability, and kept everyone in the band grounded. “Doing this in front of people is so much more enlightening, and really helps you focus on things,” Aubert says. “We were exposed. I see how that can be scary to people, but for us we really thrived on that.”

Widow’s Weeds ends up being about rebirth and renewal, facing darker elements of the soul (or society) head-on, and choosing to either engage—or leave them behind. This shift toward blunt candor wasn’t lost on Lester. “I feel Brian’s lyrics have gotten more direct over the last couple of records. He’s much more open and less coy about what he’s singing about. There’s less trying to put Vaseline on the lens.”

Over the years, Silversun Pickups have racked up 210 million worldwide streams and 10 Top 20 hits on Billboard‘s Alternative Songs chart, led by 2009’s ferocious chart-topper “Panic Switch.” Nearly 20 years after the band formed, it’s not lost on Monninger that they’re one of the few groups they’ve grown up with who have sustained a career. “I don’t know many bands that have lasted that long,” she says. “But we started as friends first, and we care about each other—you know, this is our second family. We really believe in what we’re doing. We’re going to take it as far as we can.”

For Aubert, moving forward involves staying connected to his own self (and remembering to prioritize self-care) and being attuned to creative impulses when they arise. If that means going outside of his comfort zone, so be it. “This album feels the most naked out of all of them,” Aubert says. “That’s scary at first. But that goes into my whole headspace. That goes into how things went down. It was like, ‘Hey man, you were so unaware of the things you needed, and so closed off. Just do it. Stop hiding. It was crushing you. Don’t be afraid.’

Zella Day  is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter. Hailing from the remote town of Pinetop, Arizona, and raised by a bohemian family (who hail variously from Long Beach, CA and Mexico), Zella immediately gravitated towards music as a child. At nine years old, she started covering Dylan; after cutting her teeth performing at her grandmother’s coffee house, Zella recorded her first collection of songs at age thirteen.

At age twenty, in 2015, she released her debut, Kicker, which won her accolades from critics, multiple television appearances, and sets at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and more. Following Kicker’s release, Zella shifted gears, her artistry and confidence evolving as she settled into her new home of LA. Finding a tribe of local creative cohorts - including Lana Del Rey, Weyes Blood, photographer / artist Neil Krug, and more - allowed Day to bloom into her most musically authentic self, writing songs that showed a growth and compassion well beyond her years.

Sometimes considered a sort of auxiliary destination on the Golden Ring circuit, Kaluga Oblast is probably the most rewarding tourist destination west of Moscow for its many prominent and beautiful monasteries and cathedrals.

Especially outside of the main city, Kaluga, travelers will need to rely on some knowledge of Russian or hire a guide.

Kaluga is an easy 2.5 hour train ride from Moscow , costing only about 10$.

Kaluga Oblast is en route from Central Russia 's hub, Moscow, to Bryansk Oblast and is also a possible last destination in Russia for travelers going on to Belarus .
