Tuesday Travel Tip: How to negotiate (and save) on your next Airbnb stay

Chris Dong

While the coronavirus pandemic continues, many travelers may be itching to go on their first vacation in months . A home-rental platform, like Airbnb, might be the ideal place to find your next stay. That's because it is easy to find properties that have enough personal space in our era of social distancing.

Whether you're an experienced Airbnb guest or just a novice, did you know that there may be an opportunity to negotiate on your next booking? It only makes sense to do in certain situations, but with 42 Airbnb stays under my belt, I have been able to negotiate — and save — on reservations around the world.

How to message a host before booking

While searching for the perfect Airbnb , you can actually message the host prior to going through the booking process. After selecting a property from the search results, scroll down to information about the host. Here, you should see the "contact host" button, highlighted below.

From there, you can explain why you're reaching out. Since this article is all about negotiating the rate, read on to learn more about how — and when — to do so.

Negotiate delicately — and be respectful

First, I want to make this clear: don't message every host that you come across and demand a lower rate than published. Like with any negotiation tactic, restraint and respect are necessary. In fact, Airbnb can outright ban you if enough hosts complain that you are aggressively asking for a reduction on the listed price.

Many hosts have thought pretty carefully through their pricing and — especially in light of the pandemic — will be looking to recoup some of the lost revenue from the downturn in travel. However, that doesn't mean you can't negotiate at all.

Although by no means exhaustive, here are a few things to consider when negotiating your Airbnb stay.

When you're staying for a week, a month or more

If you're planning on staying for weeks or months at a time, let the host know this ahead of time. If you can guarantee revenue for the host for an extended period, the host may be willing to discount the total cost of your reservation. Keep in mind that hosts already have this functionality — you may see a "weekly" or "monthly" discount when searching for these respective time periods.

But it can still be worth messaging the host, as long as you're straightforward about your intentions.

When you're staying during off-peak time periods

A non-peak period is another opportunity to message a host to inquire about a discount. If it's summer and you're renting in a ski town or it's winter and you're traveling to the beach, you're more likely to come across hosts that may be willing to shave off the cost of a nightly rate.

When you're staying at new rentals with few ratings

New hosts just trying to get their properties on the map, so to speak, may also make for good candidates to negotiate. If you notice that they have few reviews or ratings, politely message them to see if there's any wiggle room with the reservation.

Again, do not cold-message all hosts who don't have any reviews. If you're seriously interested in a property, inquire within.

View this post on Instagram   A long weekend getaway (read: quick winter escape!) doesn't have to cost a fortune. With so much capacity to San Juan from the NYC area, we scored a great flight deal during a traditionally expensive weekend. Other ways to keep costs low: 1. Stay at an Airbnb for part or all of your trip — an entire one bedroom apartment in San Juan cost us $50/night 2. Rent a car and explore on your own instead of booking a tour to El Yunque. 3. Use points instead of cash when it makes sense — we redeemed 12,000 Hyatt points for a night at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve (it would've cost $400 cash) P.S. Puerto Rico is very much open for business after recent setbacks from earthquakes so go, go, go! A post shared by Chris Dong (@thechrisflyer) on Feb 16, 2020 at 6:29pm PST

Bottom line

There are numerous other factors to consider when negotiating your next Airbnb stay. Do you have a good rating as a guest? Many hosts may work with you only if you have established yourself as a reliable Airbnb customer.

Are you booking last-minute or far in advance? If a host is desperate to fill their space and the reservation is imminent, they may be more willing to negotiate.

The biggest rule of thumb is to put yourself into the shoes of the host — why would they be interested in discounting their property for you? Be tactful, clear with your intentions and drop the negotiation if it's obvious the host isn't interested.

The bumper Black Friday weekend may have drawn to a close but there’s still time to grab a bargain – especially if you’re looking for your next travel fix.

Happy shoppers and bargain hunters have made the most of the sales to find their sought-after deals, with string of travel offers across Thanksgiving weekend , offering great value as package providers, airlines and hotel chains have lowered prices.

Many deals ended on Cyber Monday, 27 November, as companies from BA to Eurostar halted their busiest sale period for another year.

But for some companies, Black Friday was only the beginning. Across the board, several save amazing deals for a day dubbed “Travel Tuesday”, this year falling on 28 November. There will be even more discounts on flights, hotel stays and related travel deals from airlines and operators around the world, from Ryanair to Hawaiian Airlines.

And Simon Calder, travel correspondent for The Independent , says: “In the short term, the dying days of November and the first two weeks of December comprise the lowest of seasons when the airlines cut fares to whatever level they need to fill their planes.”

Independent Traveller guide to best hotels and short breaks

If you’ve been so far holding off on booking that holiday, wait no longer – we’ve got all the information you need to take advantage of the sales.

What is Travel Tuesday?

The day is big in the US, with booking site Hopper claiming that over 100 of its travel partners have confirmed they will take part

Falling the day after Cyber Monday every year, Travel Tuesday is to the travel industry what Cyber Monday is for tech and online deals. It’s a day of travel-only deals and savings, offered by hotel companies, airlines, travel agents and more.

Sometimes called “Travel Deals Tuesday”, it is a fairly recent phenomenon – less long-running than its Friday and Monday counterparts – and will fall on 28 November in 2023.

It’s a US phenomenon so we expect the best deals to be in the States or from US-based companies, but keep an eye out as there might be some surprises from other parts of the world.

What deals can we expect?

Ryanair have confirmed extra deals for Travel Tuesday. They are offering 10 per cent off on flights between Ireland and the UK, as well as discounted flights to several European destinations.

Virgin Holidays have extended their Cyber Monday sale, with customers able to save up to £200 per couple with the code HOLIDAY150. Virgin Hotels are offering 30 per cent off hotel bookings made between now and the end of the year.

The Hyatt hotel group is offering members 20 per cent off stays booked before December 5 for travel on or before 30 April, while Marriot Bonvoy will give members 20 per cent of hotel bookings made until the end of 28 November.

IHG Hotels are offering a saving of 20 per cent to members who book through the app, with Iberostar Beachfront Resorts offering up to 40 per cent.

Several airlines are joining in, with Spirit Airlines offering flights for just $20 to a variety of US cities, and Southwest running up to 30 per cent off base fares until 30 November.

Delta are currently offering SkyMiles scheme members up to $300 off hotel and flight bookings, while Frontier going a step further in selling an ‘all-you-can-fly’ pass for $500 to both domestic and international destinations.

Hawaiian Airlines have one-way fares available for just $91, while Alaska Airlines are offering fares from as little as $39.

More destination-specific airlines with deals include Aer Lingus , who offer savings of $100 on flights to Ireland, and French Bee , who have one-way tickets from LA to Paris from just $317. Play , a low-cost Icelandic carrier, has 35 per cent off lights to a variety of European cities including London and Copenhagen.

Further afield, Air New Zealand is offering discounts on round trips to several Oceanic destinations, with a return trip from LA to Auckland available for just $1,033. Singapore Airlines have reduced fares between the USA and Asia – one example being a $599 return trip from LA to Toyko – while Qatar Airways have fares from $810 across a range of cities in Asia.

Major cruise operators are getting in on the sales action too, with Royal Caribbean offering up to $750 off packages. Virgin Voyages will offer up to 30 per cent off all trips booked before the end of the month, while Oceania Cruises are offering $5,400 off bookings made until 5 December.

Destinations such as The Bahamas are included in the sales

Hopper , a popular flight booking website, recounts that last year’s savings included money off flights and stays in Paris , Tokyo, Bali , Miami , Las Vegas and the Bahamas.

Elsewhere, other companies have sales running until 29 November, although we don’t currently know if there will be any special Tuesday-only discounts. For example, on Booking.com , you can still save up to 30 per cent on hotel bookings before the end of 2024.

Tips for shopping on Travel Tuesday

Firstly, it can be a good idea to browse deals on Monday 27 November, both to compare prices on the two days but also because the deal you see on Tuesday may well have been on offer over the Black Friday weekend.

As ever, set a budget and try your best to stick to it, but also try and be flexible with dates and destinations if you want to save the most money.

Sign up to be notified by your favourites providers, airlines or hotels, and try and book directly with them if possible, as they usually offer the best savings.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

When I say that I’m a traveler, I mean it. I’m typically packing my bags and jetting off to a new destination around two to three times per month every month, which means that I’ve mastered the art of packing (in a cool carry-on , no less) for just about any kind of trip in virtually no time at all. While the clothes and shoes that I pack for different climates tend to vary, my mainstay essentials are always locked and loaded in my luggage, and I can say with confidence that I’ve tried and tested some of the best (and most functional) gear around.

While Cyber Monday may be over, retailers like Amazon and more have been unveiling additional markdowns in honor of Travel Tuesday. There are still plenty of tempting sales to take advantage of during Cyber Week, so start exploring the best Travel Tuesday deals on gear and accessories now. These picks are the items that I never leave home without — all on sale now for a limited time only.

Calpak Luka Duffel Bag

Every adventure that I take starts with my trusty Calpak Luka Duffel Bag in tow. This stylish weekender bag features plenty of roomy pockets to keep my essentials organized, a separate shoe compartment down below, and a luggage trolley sleeve to secure my bag on top of my luggage when I am whizzing through any airport.

It comes in 21 eye-catching colors so there’s something for everyone, and the soft squishy exterior is ideal when you’re tight on space and stowing it in front of your feet on the plane. Even better? It's on sale for 20 percent off thanks to Calpak's massive sitewide sale.

Aloha Collection Mid Pouch Organizer

I tend to gravitate towards tropical destinations more times than not, and these splash-proof pouches from Aloha Collection are always part of my packing process. For starters, these lightweight bags are made of 100 percent coated Tyvek material, which makes them super easy to clean. They take up virtually no space and come in various sizes and silhouettes (including totes , dopp kits , and duffels ) and in plenty of punchy island-inspired prints that are perfect for stowing sunscreen, swimwear, bug repellant, and more in your bag without any risk of leaks while en route to paradise.

They can even double as a casual clutch for a night out, so you’ll save space in the long run. Since Hawaii is my happy place (I find myself flying to Kauai, Maui, or Oahu any chance I can), I’m happy to support an AAPI-owned brand that always brings a smile to my face. Right now, you can enjoy 40 percent off sitewide through December 12.

Spanx Booty Boost Active Leggings

If I’m boarding a plane, I’m likely wearing a pair of black compression leggings, and these booty-boosting ones from Spanx are arguably the best ones that I own. Not only do they smooth the hips, thighs, and tummy, but they also make me look (and feel) good from every angle. Featuring a high contoured waistband, these never stretch out and also boast sweat-wicking, quick-drying properties that really come in handy when you’re sitting for hours on end or racing through a terminal to make a connecting flight.

The hidden pocket at the waistband is also handy when you need to keep your phone secure and stowed away, which is precisely what I needed when I was sightseeing around rainy Edinburgh, Scotland earlier this year. Stock up on a few pairs while they’re on sale — which hardly ever happens.

Miiso Portable Slim Battery Pack

I’ve gone through my fair share of portable battery packs, and my latest find at Amazon is the Miiso Portable Charger, which is slim, stylish, and very practical. I love that it comes with built-in cables and is quite literally the size of a credit card so it’s always with me without adding bulk to my bag.

What's more, this one comes in 12 colors, and my pro tip would be to pick a vibrant shade so you can easily spot this lifesaver when you need it most. At 23 percent off right now, this affordable find is too good to pass up.

Seavees Bodega Rain Clogs

During a recent getaway to Miami, I wore these cute and comfy clogs day in and day out while scoping out the art and culture scene in vibrant South Florida. Made of matte natural rubber with an ultra-grooved sole, these waterproof clogs come in several splashy colors and pair perfectly with trousers, daytime dresses, and denim alike. They served as the perfect seasonal transition shoe that kept me safe and secure when a little tropical rain fell upon us while walking to and from The Frost Science Museum and Pérez Art Museum Miami .

I was so impressed with how supportive and stylish they were that I abandoned my go-to travel sneakers completely and wore these funky Seavees shoes every day of my trip. Now that they’re on sale, I’ve got my eyes on a few more colors to brighten up my wardrobe this winter. After all, no one wants a bulky pair of rainboots hogging up precious space in their suitcase.

Cluci Travel Makeup Bag

I’m pretty picky when it comes to my toiletry bags, and this Cluci version won me over because it’s made of high-quality vegan leather and stores everything that I need in one compact case. The softshell exterior means that I can easily squish it in my carry-on when I’m tight on space, and the genius compartments (including a zippered closed pocket for makeup brushes) keep my cosmetics and skincare exactly where they need to be.

The wide open design lays flat when unzipped which means I can easily access my products without making a mess in dazzling hotel bathrooms (a favorite of mine being the Moroccan-meets-old-Hollywood-glamour vibe designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard at Hotel Californian in Santa Barbara.) For less than $20, this luxe-looking bag is definitely a must-buy.

Oofos Oomg Recovery Boots

Last winter, I boarded a majestic Viking Cruise and set sail along the Rhine River to enjoy the enchanting holiday markets in Europe. Staying in a cozy cabin for 10 days meant packing as nimbly as possible, so I streamlined my footwear to just these versatile Oofos boots , and I’m so glad I did. Not only were they ultra-comfy and supportive for hours on end, but they kept me light on my feet and oddly energized despite walking for hours around tiny European villages in Germany, France, Switzerland, and The Netherlands.

Lightweight, water-resistant, and perfectly packable, these recovery boots proved to be the real MVPs of the voyage. I own several pairs of Oofos shoes for all occasions (the sneakers and slides are essential on warm-weather vacations), so get them while they're 20 percent off with the code GIFT20 while you can.

Case-Mate Waterproof Phone Pouch

A waterproof phone pouch is a must anytime you’re near water, and this dazzling design from Case-Mate is by far my favorite. Aptly named Soap Bubble, this fully protective phone pouch shimmers on the sand or in the sea (a rather useful feature I quickly discovered when I accidentally left it behind on a rock on a private island in Loreto and could quite literally see it glistening it back at me from the ocean) and never felt so grateful that I selected a super sparkly holographic case.

The clasps are secure and easy to maneuver for quick transitioning when you need easy access to your phone; while the high-quality soft TPU material allows for touchscreen success time and time again. I also used this foolproof pouch during an ATV waterfall tour in Kauai and it allowed me to capture our rough and tumble (and very muddy) experience without any worries. This phone saver is worth every penny, and now that it’s on sale, I would buy it in bulk for years to come.

Tripole Mini Handheld Fan

Every time I touch down in a hot and humid place (I’m looking at you, Aruba), I whip out this personal handheld fan while waiting in the Customs line, and I’m immediately in better spirits than most of my fellow passengers. This compact miracle worker comes in 11 appealing colors and efficiently cools me off with a touch of a button.

During a recent stay at the stunning Vidanta Los Cabos , I kept my handheld mini fan near me at all times — while watching flamenco dancers at El Bar Co, lounging at The Reserve Beach Club, or taking in the view from my sizable suite balcony — and felt drastically more comfortable in the balmy weather than without it. For 50 percent off at Amazon, you can’t beat this low Cyber Tuesday price.

July Luggage Carry-On Pro Suitcase

It would be hard for me to pick my all-time favorite suitcase, but anything by July (they did design the lightest carry-on , which weighs in at under 4 pounds, after all) is a safe bet. Now that the site is offering a bundle-and-save promotion where shoppers can score 10 percent off on purchases starting at $300 or more through November 28, you should splurge on this striking Carry-On Pro Suitcase .

It features a detachable sleeve for your laptop, an ejectable battery pack for fast charging, the brand's signature SilentMove wheels, and so much more. I am also crushing on this cute everyday tote and sturdy trunk for extended travels, too.

Murad Quick Relief Colloidal Oatmeal Treatment

Depending on where I am in the world, my hands tend to get dry and cracked and can be prone to unsightly eczema flare-ups when I’m stressed or off my circadian rhythm. There’s nothing worse than being far from home and also uncomfortable in my own skin, so I’ve learned to keep this fast-acting, therapeutic Murad cream with me at all times.

This soothing treatment is packed with colloidal oatmeal and ground cherry to replenish and nourish the skin barrier on contact, and a little goes a long way. I use it as an everyday hand cream to soothe my skin at all times, and now that it’s 30 percent off for Cyber Week, I’m stocking up. Make sure to enter the promo code BF2023 before checking out to unlock the savings.

Gatherall Adhesive Bra

When it comes to packing, I’m forever on the hunt for fashion hacks that help me save space in my suitcase, and the Gatherall Adhesive Bra has become my go-to staple anytime that I travel anywhere sunny (Maui, Miami, and Costa Rica, to name a few.) This backless, strapless silicone sticky bra never lets me down and is often the only bra I pack since it works seamlessly with every outfit imaginable.

It’s washable and reusable, and can be worn up to 30 times, so packing multiple bras for numerous outfits will soon be a behavior of the past. Luckily, the brand is running its once-a-year sale right now, so you can score 20 percent off sitewide with the code BFCM20 for the entire month of November.

Neewer Rechargeable Selfie Light

There’s nothing worse than blurry nighttime photos, especially when you’re trying to capture the moment somewhere spectacular.  Enter this handy selfie light , which is on sale for $26 and has saved me more times than I count — whether I’m in a dimly lit venue in need of a good photo or simply need to practice extra precaution when maneuvering about as a female solo traveler . It goes without saying that this gadget is a game-changer for creating crisp selfies and videos any time of day, but it’s also an essential during emergencies, too.

Should you ever find yourself in a tropical storm or without power for any amount of time, this handy light will come in clutch and lasts for hours when fully charged. It easily clips to any phone, laptop, or tablet and brilliantly illuminates anything you need with the click of a button. I’ve relied on it to light up narrow spiral staircases inside Galata Tower in Istanbul and also to help me identify the tastiest chocolate clams that were charred in the sand (and then cooked on an open fire at a nighttime barbeque at Hotel Oasis in Loreto, too).

Students internationally recognized for for recent research linking travel and mental health

By:   Elizabeth Ellis

Tuesday, August 20, 2024

airbnb travel tuesday

Doctoral students Chenggang Hua and Xing Yao in the Department of Health & Wellness Design are spearheading an emerging research trend studying the therapeutic effects of travel participation on alleviating depression in trauma survivors.

Hua and Yao were awarded the Best Research Paper Award at the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) Annual International Conference held earlier this summer. The paper, entitled “Journeys to Heal: The Reciprocal Link Between Travel Participation and Depression Alleviation in Trauma Survivors,” is putting Hua and Yao—with the support of faculty members Shu Cole, Ph.D. and Evan Jordan, Ph.D. —at the forefront of this traditionally under-researched area of public health.

"Travel can go beyond enjoyment or just leisure. It involves a lot of stakeholders, especially for people with mental health issues," shares Hua. "They need to negotiate with their families, service providers…it is a lot of work to do. But during this intervention comes a training process to help [trauma survivors] integrate back into society; conquer their fear; gain confidence; trust people."

According to Hua and Yao, the study utilized a “random intercept cross-lagged panel model on a group of 2,440 participants with a longitudinal dataset spanning 20 years” and found evidence linking increased travel activities with significantly reduced depressive symptoms. When carefully implemented, acknowledging the therapeutic effects of travel could foster a vital relationship between health professionals and tourism and hospitality professionals.

Last December, Yao was recognized at the American Public Health Association (APHA) for her research on "gender disparities in housework-related stress during travel". For instance, hotel rooms as opposed to an Airbnb or Vrbo home lack domestic appliances and a higher level of housework industrialization, creating the impression of more "gender neutral" environments.

"In combination with a leisure-focused setting, these spaces may help reduce gender-related health disparities between women and men," says Yao. "The positive experiences of travel are something that can be taken back to daily life to improve upon it, and even impact gender relationships. We are a very small team studying this topic, but this award gives us further confidence to continue our work."

Rich Holden. Ph.D.

Hua points out a specific challenge common to the tourism and hospitality industry: Hotels will invest in handicapped accessible rooms, but not extend such accessibility to the recreational areas. Hua cites the "standardized service" model in the hospitality and tourism area is fraught with health disparities, often designed for the "abled" customer. Accommodation services attempt to fill in the gap for people with disabilities when the standardized model fails to meet their needs, and Hua cites this as the fundamental flaw in the current industry service protocols. Improving the service design would offer significant health and wellness benefits across the board, according to Hua and Yao.

"Then there are invisible disabilities, such as mental health issues, that providers are not prepared to accommodate," says Hua. "Another is groups with obesity issues—airplane seats are designed for 'normal-sized' people and thus, they cannot travel smoothly… given that travel is a basic human need with a broad range of participants, there is a lot that needs to be done in terms of public health in the hospitality and tourism area."

Dr. Jordan applauds Yao and Hua, stating that this international recognition solidifies the importance of this area of research to the travel and tourism industry.

"Chenggang and Xing are really at the vanguard of this nascent area of research in seeking to understand the relationships between travel and health, and the disparities within those relationships among populations that have been traditionally marginalized," he says.

How does Airbnb work?

How to book an airbnb, check in processes vary from airbnb to airbnb, you may have to clean up before checking out of your airbnb, is airbnb safe, how to save money on airbnb bookings.

Lodging during your vacations or business trips doesn’t necessarily have to be a standard hotel, bed and breakfast or campground. These days, more and more travelers are staying at someone’s house, coordinated through home rental sites like Airbnb.

Renting a vacation home via Airbnb can sometimes be the cheapest option. What’s more, on Airbnb you’ll typically have better luck finding more beds in the same unit than you’d find in a hotel room. Airbnbs often tend to include couches or futons so you can sleep more people. They typically have washing machines and kitchens to better accommodate extended stays, giving travelers the option to save a little money by cooking at home.

Airbnbs are also often located in places that might not have many hotels to choose from, providing you with more lodging options (and sometimes the only lodging option). And many properties are delightfully unexpected. There are treehouses, lighthouses and geodesic domes for rent, and there’s even a replica of The Hundred Acre Wood near London.

But Airbnbs also have challenges. Check-in processes are inconsistent, as some hosts make you meet up with them in-person to exchange keys while other units unlock remotely so you never meet the owner. Policies, for instance about parties and cancellations, vary by property. There are tons of fees (which again, vary by property). Couple that with Airbnb’s lack of a loyalty program, and the platform sometimes doesn’t net out to be any cheaper than hotels.

But if the vacation home life is the life for you, here’s what you need to know about renting an Airbnb.

A small house resembling a tree sits in the woods with a red door and small Winnie the Pooh stuffed figure on the front steps.

Airbnb launched in 2007 as an online, peer-to-peer home rental service, when its founders were seeking a way to help pay their rent — in this case renting out a portion of their home to someone else. CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky inflated three air mattresses to make what was the first-ever Airbnb listing, and today there are millions of listings worldwide (and you can actually still book a room in Chesky's own house , though it's rarely actually available to book).

Brian Chesky Airbnb listing

A listing photo for Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky's own home, which is offered for rent on the site.

The premise of Airbnb is simple: A person lists their home for rent, sets available dates and the price, and you can opt to rent it. Some listings give you the entire home to yourself, while others provide private areas within a home (such as an in-law unit). Sometimes, you might even share a room with someone else.

Listings vary across pretty much every aspect of your stay, including amenities offered, cancellation policies and the number of guests allowed to stay. But Airbnb’s platform has about 4 million hosts across 220 countries and regions, so there’s a good chance you’ll find an Airbnb that matches your needs.

How to make an account on Airbnb

To get started on Airbnb, you’ll need to create an online account, which usually entails more than just a name and email address if you want to book a stay. You’ll typically have to upload your government ID, which Airbnb requires for security (after all, you’re staying in someone else’s house, and sometimes even with them or other guests present).

Accepted forms of identification include a driver’s license, passport, identity card or visa. Airbnb says it does not share your ID with anyone else who uses Airbnb, including hosts.

Finding your rental

airbnb travel tuesday

Use Airbnb’s filters to find your perfect rental, or try the new categories feature.

Booking an Airbnb is fairly straightforward. The website offers robust filters, so you can narrow down rentals based on available dates and number of guests, and other features like whether the rental offers amenities like cribs, accessible showers or free parking.

In May 2022, the company launched its Airbnb Categories feature which gives you the option to browse properties by some more nebulous criteria. Rather than searching for a specific city or region, you can see properties all around the world that fall into categories like "OMG!" (for weird and whimsical homes) or "Grand Pianos" for, well, homes with grand pianos. Other categories include homes with chef's kitchens, homes located near national parks and, simply, yurts. The Categories feature has caught on, and at the end of 2022, Airbnb launched six new categories for you to browse through: Trending, Adapted, Play, Hanoks (which are traditional Korean homes), New and Top of the World (indicating homes at least about 10,000 feet above sea level or higher).

airbnb travel tuesday

The Adapted Category displays homes that are adapted for wheelchair access, with verified step-free paths into the home, bedroom and bathroom.

Most listings include multiple photos, detailed descriptions and reviews to give you a solid idea of what you’re in for. If there aren’t many high-quality photos, or there are no reviews, be cautious. It could simply be a brand-new listing and just fine, but it might also be a warning sign.

Read the descriptions carefully, as they typically detail important information such as pet rules, noise rules and limits on guests. Some owners also require you to sign separate contracts or rental agreements outside of the standard Airbnb contracts, which will typically be spelled out in the description as well. Airbnb has features that let you message the host before booking if you’re unsure about something.

If you're planning a longer trip, you might want to take advantage of Airbnb's Split Stay feature. Split Stays give guests the opportunity to split a longer trip between two properties. Individually, those properties might not allow for a long enough stay to match your trip needs, but Split Stays (which will appear in location-specific search results as well as certain categories) provides travelers with automated suggestions for coordinating lodging on a longer trip.

When you’ve found your rental of choice, the actual booking process varies. Some homes let you book instantly, while other homes require you to send the owner a request for approval.

Booking and paying for your Airbnb

Once accepted, you’ll be charged for the reservation. If your rental requires a request for approval and the owner either declines or doesn’t respond, you won’t be charged.

All payments are handled via Airbnb. Acceptable payment methods in most countries include major credit cards (like Visa, Mastercard and American Express), most debit cards that can be processed as credit cards and other payment services like PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. If you find yourself in a situation where the host is asking to be paid separately (such as through a Venmo payment or bank transfer), it could be a scam.

The actual time of when you need to pay varies depending on location and length of stay. Most properties let you pay via a payment plan, where you pay a portion upon confirmation, and the rest is automatically charged upon checkout.

airbnb travel tuesday

Payments are handled within Airbnb, which typically gives you the option to pay in full or in installments. Some properties include additional taxes and fees, like cleaning fees, service fees and occupancy taxes.

Between acceptance and your trip date, you’ll be able to chat with your host within the Airbnb app or website. You might find that feature handy to coordinate check-in times, or simply to find out more details about amenities (for example, you might want to know whether the kitchen is stocked with certain cookware).

Checking in to an Airbnb can sometimes be the biggest adventure of your trip. Unlike a hotel where there’s typically someone working at the front desk 24/7 to issue your key, Airbnb check-in policies vary widely by property.

In-person key exchanges: The most conventional method is meeting up with your host face to face, where they’ll likely hand you the keys and show you around the property. Some property tours might last only a couple of minutes but be prepared: Properties with more complicated features, such as guard gates or even an oddly designed shower, can entail a longer tour. Budget enough time between check-in and your next vacation adventure just in case.

Be aware that check-in may require some thoughtful coordination if the host isn’t planning on waiting at the property for your arrival. If you’re trying to text a host to meet up in a foreign country, ensure you have adequate international cell phone coverage or access to Wi-Fi so you can actually chat, especially if your transportation is delayed and you’ll have to meet up later than expected.

Other possible check-in methods that might not require you to meet the host include:

A host leaves instructions to enter (e.g., the key is under this flower pot).

Keys are left in a numbered lockbox, and the host messages you with the code.

A neighbor, co-host or building doorperson meets you.

Typically, the host will message you with check-in details 48 hours prior to your trip via the Airbnb app or website.

Just as the check-in process varies by property, the checkout process varies, too. Some hosts have specific cleanup instructions, such as asking you to put used towels and sheets in the laundry room or to start the dishwasher. Other hosts let you leave the house as-is and handle cleanup themselves.

The majority of hosts also charge cleaning fees , which are a one-time charge pocketed by hosts to cover costs such as doing laundry or scrubbing toilets between guest stays. They’re separate from the base price and are in addition to service fees or charges for optional add-ons. While Airbnb maintains that the average cost of the fee is less than 10% of your total reservation, a NerdWallet analysis of Airbnb cleaning fees found that the median cleaning fee was $75 per stay.

It's not entirely clear at booking how much you'll be on the hook for cleaning. However, Airbnb said it eventually plans to require hosts to post the cleaning requirements on the listing before guests book. Guests will also be able to leave feedback on the checkout process (and have an avenue to complain if the cleaning process is too onerous).

The process for locking up will also vary. If you met your host in person for check-in, you might also meet them to check out. Other hosts might ask you to lock the door behind you and throw the key through a slot in the door, or to return it to the lockbox you initially got it from.

Your host will likely share the specific checkout details either before or upon arrival.

Airbnb certainly has safety measures in place, but the company isn’t immune from challenges that come from a service where you enter a stranger's home.

Safety measures between guests and hosts

Airbnb conducts background checks on guests and hosts. It uses machine learning to analyze data with the intent to spot suspicious activity such as fraudulent listings. And because Airbnb acts as the intermediary in handling the transaction, your account and payments are more secure than if you were to directly pay the host.

Yet, while there can certainly be shady hotel practices or rowdy guests at any other form of lodging, Airbnb has gotten a hefty amount of bad press when it comes to behavior-related safety issues. Airbnb has experienced what experts have coined the “ party house problem ,” where large properties morph into sites for raucous parties that sometimes get out of hand. A deadly shooting in 2019 at a Northern California Airbnb made national headlines.

Meanwhile, guests have complained about questionable and sometimes downright dangerous hosts. A 2021 research project at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the University of Colorado School of Public Affairs in Colorado Springs, conducted in partnership with data scientist and travel safety expert Asher Fergusson, looked at more than 100,000 public Airbnb guest complaints via Twitter published between January 2015 and September 2020. That study found more than 28,000 complaints around scams, and more than 7,700 complaints about unsafe conditions purely submitted on Twitter.

Safety measures pertaining to property condition

Airbnb has taken some steps to ensure properties are physically safe. It provides smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to hosts at no cost, and you can filter by homes that have one when searching for listings.

However, Airbnb doesn’t necessarily inspect properties for other important safety features that you might expect, such as having at least two exits out of every room, or whether appliances and heating systems are up to code.

And unlike most hotels, most Airbnbs lack features that can keep you safe, including a safe (which you might want to use to stash valuables like jewelry or passports). It also doesn’t offer 24/7 lobby staffing, which could be helpful if you need support from a fellow human in an emergency. Airbnb does, however, offer a 24-hour safety line you can access through the app through its AirCover program, which launched in 2021. AirCover also offers a Get-What-You-Booked Guarantee through which guests can get refunded or switched to a similar property if there's anything materially wrong with the property they originally booked.

Safety measures to protect hosts

Speaking of AirCover, it's there to protect hosts too. AirCover includes guest identity verification and $3 million in damage protection to better protect hosts from issues that guests may cause.

Safety issues can happen at any form of lodging, and Airbnb is generally considered safe. Just be aware that problems can arise, so be aware of scams, unethical practices and physical issues with properties.

Since Airbnb prices are set by the hosts, the conventional tricks for saving money on hotels don’t always apply. But there are a few ways to save money on Airbnb rentals, including earning and redeeming credit card points and airline miles on Airbnb stays .

Book a longer stay

Many properties offer discounted rates for longer stays (typically a week or more). Some offer even deeper discounts for stays of a month or more.

airbnb travel tuesday

Some properties offer weekly discounts for extended stays.

Rather than taking two separate four-day vacations this year, you might consider booking one, eight-day vacation in the same location. You’ll likely save money on not just your Airbnb, but other costs like airfare — and you’ll only have to pack once.

According to a NerdWallet analysis, the nightly rate for a 30-night stay was 46% cheaper per night than a one-night stay.

» Learn more: Why it's worth booking Airbnb for a week or longer

Split it with friends or family

Airbnbs are particularly cost-effective for large groups, especially when you compare it to the price of booking multiple hotel rooms.

NerdWallet compared the price per head at Airbnbs with a max capacity of two adults versus a hotel in the same city. It also compared the cost of an Airbnb with a max capacity of six people against the cost to book three hotel rooms (assuming two adults per room).

The average Airbnb for six was 33% cheaper than booking three hotel rooms . But the average hotel was 29% cheaper than booking an Airbnb for two.

Here’s how median costs broke down, per person:

Book about a month out

NerdWallet compared prices of Airbnbs booked 3 days out, 4 weeks out and 47 weeks out. The Airbnb prices included cleaning fees, long-term discounts and base costs when booking in advance versus short term. Here are our findings:

It turns out that booking an Airbnb four weeks in advance yields the lowest median price — $270.80. This is roughly $30 cheaper than booking it almost a year in advance, and about $50 cheaper than booking it last-minute.

Redeem travel statement credits for Airbnbs

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Some credit cards offer travel statement credits, and those that do typically tend to cover Airbnb stays. In fact, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers a statement credit that can be used to offset Airbnb purchases.

Purchase discounted gift cards

Airbnb sells gift cards on its own site, but major retailers that sell gift cards, such as Target, Sam’s Club and Best Buy, often can get you a better deal.

airbnb travel tuesday

At the time of publication, Sam’s Club was selling $100 Airbnb gift cards for $96.96.

These stores frequently run promotions where they’ll sell you Airbnb gift cards at a lower cost than the gift card’s value. During certain times of year, you might find them sold at a 10% discount, though sometimes the discounts aren’t quite as deep.

Holding certain memberships or credit cards might qualify you for additional discounts. For example, if you purchase an Airbnb gift card from Target and pay with your Target Circle™ Credit Card , you’ll get an automatic 5% discount at checkout (so you’d only pay $95 for a $100 gift card).

Earn points by paying with a travel rewards credit card

This tip won’t necessarily save you money upfront, but it’ll earn you valuable travel currency on the other end. Most credit cards that offer you bonus points on travel classify purchases made through home-sharing platforms like Airbnb in the same way as hotels .

So if you’ve got a travel rewards credit card, use it. And if you don’t have one yet, consider applying for one. While premium travel credit cards can offer big rewards rates for your travel spending, there are plenty of travel credit cards with no annual fee .

Earn airline miles, too

Your Airbnb stays are an easy way to rack up Delta SkyMiles , which you can accumulate and redeem for free flights. Once enrolled in the program, you’ll earn 1 mile for every dollar spent on qualifying Airbnb reservations, excluding taxes and fees. Note that you'll need to enter your SkyMiles number every time you book.

NerdWallet values a Delta Skymile at 1.2 cents each , so this isn’t necessarily going to make you rich. But, it’s an easy way to accumulate some extra Delta miles with minimal effort.

Travel when no one wants to

Your Airbnb host is likely aware of the principles of supply and demand, and will set rates for specific nights accordingly. A property in New York City with a view of the Times Square Ball will likely be more expensive on Dec. 31 than any other cold winter day.

If you can be flexible, search for the same property across various weekends versus weekdays to spot lower rates. Meanwhile, consider whether you really need to travel during that long weekend when everyone else is off of work and school. Shoulder season also tends to be an excellent time to travel.

Consider Airbnb alternatives

Airbnb's reign over the vacation rental kingdom is undeniable. But between questionable cleaning fees, quirky cancellation policies, and the occasional horror story, even the most loyal Glampacker might start daydreaming of greener pastures.

Whether you just want to comparison shop to ensure you're getting the best deal from Airbnb, or you'd rather swear off Airbnb entirely, there's no shortage of Airbnb alternatives . One of its biggest competitors is Vrbo (consider it the Lyft to Airbnb's Uber ). It offers a better browsing experience plus the ability to earn rewards through the One Key Rewards program .

You might also consider Vacasa, which stands out as a full-service vacation rental management company. That means homeowners partnering with Vacasa to have their properties professionally managed (and generally means an overall more polished vacation rental experience while still getting the unique, hometown feel of renting a home from its actual owner).

Superhost is a designation Airbnb gives to certain hosts who have high ratings, low cancellation rates and host frequently. Consider it an added layer of confidence that your rental will be a positive experience should you rent from a superhost.

Airbnb offers a filter that allows you to narrow your search exclusively to properties from superhosts. Superhosts also have a badge on their profile that indicates their status.

If something is wrong at check-in, Airbnb first recommends reaching out to the host to solve the problem. If that doesn’t work, or you have another issue that the host can’t resolve, then use Airbnb’s Contact Us page to report your issue online.

Airbnb also has a chat bot, which you can find on the inbox feature on your account. That can get you quick answers to simple issues, or can connect you to a human support staffer if necessary.

If you're unable to check-in for whatever reason, and the host is unable to address the issue, Airbnb's new Check-In Guarantee means the company will either refund you or will find you a similar home for the length of your booking.

If it’s truly an emergency that impacts your personal safety, skip trying to reach out to Airbnb and instead contact local police or emergency services immediately.

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account to travel or host on Airbnb.

To cancel your Airbnb reservation, go to the “Trips” tab, then select “Show more trip plans.” From there, navigate to “Show details,” where you’ll be able to change or cancel your reservation.

Cancellation policies vary by property, but they’ll be spelled out on the listings page so you can see them before you book and pay. The most flexible Airbnb cancellation policies let you cancel up until 24 hours before check-in for a full refund . Meanwhile, other listings are completely nonrefundable.

If a host cancels your booking within 30 days of check-in, Airbnb will find you a similar home or provide a refund, depending on availability, through its new Booking Protection Guarantee.

The five destinations that had the most growth in bookings of private rooms between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023, compared to the same time the previous year were:

Mapo-gu, Seoul, Korea

Melbourne, Australia

Warsaw, Poland

Sydney, Australia

If you happen to be a Host in any of these destinations, there are a few things you can do to get ready for the busy season. And if you’re not, you might find inspiration from this data to update your listing.

For example, if you have a pool, consider updating your cover photo with a great shot of it. If you’re near amazing hiking trails, add that to your listing title or description.

The top-booked Airbnb Categories between May 2022 and March 2023 internationally were Beach, Amazing pools, Trending, Iconic cities, and National parks—so guests are prioritizing sun, sights, and hikes. Even if your place isn’t on one of these lists, you can use this info to highlight any aspects of your listing that follow these trends.

Wherever you are in the world, you’re part of a community that creates an experience for guests that can only be found on Airbnb. In a recent global survey of over 19,000 guests and Hosts, more than 60 percent said they felt traveling on Airbnb provided a closer connection to the local culture than staying in a hotel or resort.

The Flying Carpet in Cullman, Alabama

a house with a deck and trees around it

We never thought we'd find such great Moroccan-inspired decor in Alabama, yet here we are. This romantic getaway in the northern part of the state is surrounded by enchanting trees and a charming creek, and the space itself is filled with lush furnishings and fabrics to make your stay as glamorous and comfortable as ever. Plus, there's a private hot tub you can use year-round.

Wilderness Yurt in Seward, Alaska

a couple of cabins in the woods

This Airbnb is proof that what's on the inside counts. Though this forest lodging may look a bit bare on the outside, the interior is warm and inviting, perfect to escape the cold. This secluded spot is only accessible by boat with guarantees of seeing some wildlife.

Earthen Home in Jerome, Arizona

a small building with a stone patio

Built in 1977 by late architect Paul Nonnast, the House on the Edge of Time is partially carved into the earth and uses natural materials. It comprises bumpy paths and steep edges, but if you stay in a place like this, you'll have a truly unique experience. There is a hot tub and the bedroom has air conditioning, but the space is more suited for those who love to be outdoors. Just note that it is not ADA-compliant.

Stoneflower Cottage in Heber Springs, Arkansas

a room with a bed and a table

The star of this Airbnb is the architecture both inside and out. Located on a little almost-island off of Greers Ferry Lake in Arkansas, this serene home was designed by architect E. Fay Jones. The different levels of the home feel like two separate destinations: On the lower level, you're surrounded by natural stone and boulders, and on the main level, you get to admire redwood beams and floors throughout. The architectural details on the main and upper levels are something you will want to write home about.

Pinecone Treehouse in Bonny Doon, California

a lantern from a tree

You're not seeing things—this really is a treehouse shaped like a pinecone. California is full of interesting places to stay, but this one in the western part of the state wins the title of the coolest Airbnb. It definitely isn't the most spacious place to stay, but you'll be suspended in a forest surrounded by redwood trees. It provides one bedroom and one bathroom—but the toilet is a compostable one, so just be aware of that.

Dome Home in Centennial, Colorado

a house with a large glass window

Have you ever wondered what having an indoor pool in your office would be like? Well, turn that dream into a reality by staying at this Airbnb with a heated saltwater pool and three WFH stations. The property host makes it very clear that children under the age of 12 are not allowed on this property, so if that doesn't affect you, prepare to be blown away by the interesting design of this dome home. It has four bedrooms and three bathrooms, as well as an indoor hot tub, a private outdoor space, wall waterfalls, and plenty of natural light.

Artist's Loft in Stonington, Connecticut

a living room with a fireplace

This guesthouse provides the backdrop for a dreamy weekend getaway in Connecticut: Lots of warmth, a wood-burning fireplace, mismatched furniture, a vaulted ceiling, and a charming outdoor space. Known as the Dacha, this home was built in 1945 originally as an artist's studio, and it does share the outdoor space with the host family in the main house. However, the description promises only a wave from them if you do see each other—your privacy is of the utmost importance.

Beachfront Home in Milton, Delaware

a group of houses in a wooded area

If you want a top Airbnb directly on the beach, you can't get much closer than this one without being in the ocean. This private beachfront property removes the crowds from the sand and allows you and your guests to fully relax by the water. It's fairly secluded but only a 15- to 20-minute drive from the nearest town for when you need some social interaction.

The Grand Tiki in Key West, Florida

a house on a dock in the water

The price of this top Airbnb is not for the faint of heart, but how much cooler can you get than a luxury, two-person boat? Besides, you won't just be paying for a place to sleep—when you rent this Airbnb, you're also given access to two inflatable paddle boards, two sets of snorkel gear, a double hammock, and some of the most amazing sunsets you could dream of. The interior is also extremely on theme with straw accents and warm wood tones.

The Lens Lodge in Ellijay, Georgia

a small house with a slide

Can you guess why it's called the Lens Lodge? This picture-perfect Airbnb in Georgia lets you sleep inside the lens of the camera, which is 15 feet above the ground. The inside of this home is sleek, modern, and mostly white, making it a stark contrast to the nature surrounding the property. Though it may feel like you're staying in the middle of nowhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are plenty of attractions nearby that you can get to via car, including four wineries.

Volcano Dome in Mountain View, Hawaii

a tent in the woods

Made from cindercrete, staying in this top Airbnb is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With a 25-foot ceiling and a skylight at the top, let the sun shine down on you in your livable volcano, complete with a circle bed, “lava” floor, and limestone bathtub. Plus, the property is powered by solar energy. Located on the Big Island about a 10-minute drive from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you can't get much more in touch with nature than this.

Flower Pot in Burley, Idaho

a building with a large arched doorway

Experience what life would be like as a garden elf when you stay at this cool Airbnb in Idaho. Though you might expect a cottagecore interior when you step inside, you'll actually find a chic, modern aesthetic complete with a kitchenette, lofted bedroom, and plenty of fun amenities, like a record player. There's also a seasonal rooftop patio, hot tub, and ground-level outdoor space.

Octagon House in Galena, Illinois

a living room with a chandelier and couches

After a day of skiing in Galena, return to this midcentury modern gem and curl up by the fire. This octagon house perfectly combines a love of nature and the outdoors, as well as an affinity for modern amenities and pretty interiors. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms in this unique home, along with a hot tub, fire pit, deck, and plenty of vintage decor.

This tiny Airbnb is the answer to escaping the hustle and bustle of your life for something a bit more down-to-earth for a while. This decked-out caboose might not physically take you anywhere, but it will surely make for a transportive stay. It's stocked with every amenity you'll need, including access to two conductor's chairs facing the horse pasture to watch the sunset.

Top Secret Silo in Wilson, Kansas

a room with a staircase and chairs

After you stay at this top Airbnb, you'll be able to say you've spent the night in an underground missile silo. Thankfully, as the description points out, this one was never used to deliver a weapon of mass destruction, but it was the launch control center for an Atlas F Missile Base. It has two bedrooms and one bathroom with a shared living space that will have to accommodate tour guests during specific hours—but it'll be a truly educational trip.

Cliff Dweller in Campton, Kentucky

a house on a cliff

This cool Airbnb is for serious outdoorspeople—you will be scaling the cliffside to reach your bed for the night. According to the description, it'll take you 177 steps to get to the kitchen, 45 steps to get to the bedroom, and 11 steps to get to the roof deck. We think it's safe to say that once you're there, you're locked in, so find comfort in the fact that the interior is as quaint and charming as any other cabin with wood accents, slanted ceilings, and amazing views.

Historic Cottage in Franklin, Louisiana

a bedroom with a bed and a guitar

The interior of this historic Airbnb (built in 1834) is as charming as the exterior, which is surrounded by huge oak trees that are covered in beautiful Spanish moss. This private, 2,000-square-foot home overlooks a bayou and features a large back porch from which to admire it.

Octagonal Home in St. George, Maine

a house with a green roof by a lake

The only thing better than an octagonal home is one directly on the beach. This luxurious getaway is decked out with romantic decor and warm furnishings in an open-concept space, so be aware if you're traveling with company that privacy might be hard to come by. Stay here if you want to wake up admiring the beach every morning and wind down each night on the porch with a drink in hand.

Treehouse in McHenry, Maryland

a kitchen with a table and chairs

This treehouse gives you panoramic views of the forest, allowing you to view all the wonders of nature throughout the entire day. It's an outdoor lover's paradise, as it's only five minutes from Deep Creek Lake and has ample spaces on the property to enjoy immersing oneself in the forest, including from the hot tub.
