Mumbai Local Train Routes

Mumbai’s local train system isn’t just a mode of transport. For many, it’s an experience, an emotion, and a way of life.

Each line runs for over 100 kilometers (62 miles), and over 7.5 million people commute daily via this network!

Best Local Train Destinations for Tourists

Each station offers a unique experience:

– Churchgate: Not far from Marine Drive, you will be enchanted by the historical architecture.

– Dadar: Dive into the bustling markets near the station. Central and Western share this stop, and suburban railway stations are nearby.

– Andheri: Enjoy Versova Beach’s serene view. It serves the Western and Harbour lines

Pro Tip: With so much foot traffic nearby, look for street food near the stations. In Dadar, I encountered a local vendor selling the most delectable ‘vada pav.’ That spontaneous food trip remains one of my fondest Mumbai memories!

Local Train Hours of Operation

The first train chugs out at around 4:00 AM, and the last train winds up the day by midnight.

Peak hours? Morning 7-11 and evening 5-9. Best avoided unless you’re up for a *real* challenge.

Pro Tip: Want to see what it’s like on Mumbai local trains during rush hour, but not ready to experience it? Go check out a main station but just watch from a bench with some chai. It’s better than a football game.

Which Local Train Is Best: Slow or Fast?

Ever heard the terms “slow” and “fast” trains and wondered what the fuss is about?

Slow Trains

They stop at every station, making them great for short distances. But, during peak hours, it’s a bit of a hustle. Opt for a slow train during off-peak hours if you’re not in a rush. You’ll get to enjoy the city’s rhythm without the rush!

Fast Trains

These skip several stations and are ideal for longer distances.

Pro Tip: Beware of taking the fast trains on your first trip. Since they don’t stop at every stop, you must ensure the train stops at your station. I made this mistake on one of my first trips!

How To Buy Tickets and Passes

mumbai local train ticket

Navigate through the ticketing process easily:

1. Approach the Ticket Counter for a manual ticket.

2. Download the UTS Mobile App for digital tickets.

3. If staying longer, get a Tourist Pass for unlimited journeys.

Pro Tip: Avoid morning rush hours when buying tickets at the counter. The queues can be daunting!

Train Seating

Two options are available: First Class and Second Class. While the first class offers a bit more space, the second class gives you an authentic experience. Designated coaches for women and senior citizens are available.

I didn’t see much difference between the seats and there are many more second class options.

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling long, try securing a window seat. The changing landscapes are a treat to the eyes!

How to Use Automatic Ticket Vending Machines on Mumbai’s Local Trains

Ah, the world of technology! If you’re keen on skipping those sometimes endless ticket queues (and trust me, during peak times, you might want to), Mumbai’s local trains have a nifty solution: Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs).

Here’s a quick and easy guide for you to get that ticket and hop onto your next adventure.

1. Locating the Machine:

You’ll find ATVMs at every major railway station in Mumbai. They’re usually near the entrance or the manual ticket counters.

2. Choose Your Language:

The machines often provide options for multiple languages. Simply touch the screen to select your preferred language – typically, English and Hindi are the most commonly used options.

3. Select the Type of Ticket:

You can choose between a single journey ticket, a return ticket, or a platform ticket. Touch the option that suits your requirement.

4. Choosing Your Destination:

A list of stations will appear on the screen. Scroll through and select your desired destination. If you’re unsure of the station name, check a Mumbai local train map or ask a friendly local nearby.

5. Payment:

Insert the exact change into the machine. Some ATVMs might also accept larger notes or even provide change, but it’s best to have the exact amount to avoid any hiccups.

6. Collect Your Ticket:

The machine will print out your ticket once your payment is accepted. Ensure you take it along with any change provided.

7. Smart Cards:

For those planning to travel frequently or even if you’re in Mumbai for a week or so, consider getting a Smart Card. It allows you to preload a certain amount and use the ATVMs without fumbling for change each time. Plus, it’s super convenient!

Pro Tip: Keep the ticket safe to show to any ticket checkers and because you might need it to exit some of the bigger stations.

It might seem daunting at first, especially if there’s a queue behind you, but take a deep breath. With a couple of tries, you’ll be using ATVMs like a pro! And always remember, when in doubt, ask. Mumbaikars are always ready to help, and who knows, you might just make a new friend.

How to Find The Right Train

Dahanu_Road_railway_station_-_Mumbai_EMU_local_train

Mumbai’s train system is vast but not complicated if you know the basics:

– Indicators & Boards: These are your best friends. Always updated with the train’s destination and timing.

– Announcements: They might be fast and in multiple languages, but they’re essential.

Pro Tip: Most locals are friendly. If in doubt, ask someone nearby. Mumbai’s unity in diversity shines on its local trains.

Common Mistakes Tourists Make on Mumbai’s Local Trains

CND-Mumbai Selfie local train

As someone who’s been there and done that (more times than I’d like to admit), here are some of the most common slip-ups I’ve made or noticed tourists often make.

Let’s help you sidestep these for a smoother ride.

1. Getting on the Wrong Carriage:

There are separate carriages for women, and some are specifically reserved during peak hours. Always check the signage and, when in doubt, ask a local. They’re generally more than happy to point you in the right direction.

If you get it wrong, you can easily switch carriages so don’t worry you won’t face jail time!

2. Waiting for Empty Trains:

Ah, the optimism! Mumbai’s local trains, especially during rush hours, are… well, let’s just say ‘bustling’ is an understatement. If you wait for an empty train, you might be waiting forever.

Pro Tip: During peak hours, aim for the first or the last compartments, which tend to be slightly less crowded.

3. Hesitating:

When the train arrives, and there’s a sea of people, it’s natural to hesitate. But that split-second delay can mean missing your train.

Pro Tip: Know which door you’ll be exiting from before your stop arrives. Stand ready and move with the flow.

4. Not Keeping Personal Belongings Safe:

Just like any crowded place in the world, there’s always a slight risk of pickpocketing.

Pro Tip: Use a money belt or a front-facing backpack. Always be aware of your belongings, especially in dense crowds.

5. Mispronouncing Station Names:

I once asked a local for directions to ‘Versova’ (mispronounced), and got sent on a wild goose chase. You can show a photo of the name on your phone to be sure.

Pro Tip: Listen to the announcements or ask multiple people if unsure. Sometimes the pronunciation can make all the difference!

6. Avoiding Eye Contact:

In many cultures, avoiding eye contact is polite. But a friendly nod or a brief smile can make your journey more pleasant. Mumbaikars are friendly, and a small gesture can lead to a heartwarming conversation.

Pro Tip: Don’t be shy to strike up a chat. You might just end up with a local tip or two.

While these might seem daunting, remember that every traveler, including yours, has had their share of blunders. Embrace them, laugh them off, and keep moving. Mumbai awaits, and its local trains are the best way to truly feel the city’s pulse.

Tips for Safely Riding The Train

Mumbai_Suburban_Railway_2009-09-27

Safety is paramount:

– Stay Alert: Beware of pickpockets, especially during rush hours.

– Boarding/Alighting: Wait for the train to halt completely.

– Train Etiquette: Respect it. Mumbai takes its train etiquette seriously.

Pro Tip: Always carry a small water bottle, especially during summer. Mumbai’s humidity combined with the train’s hustle can be draining!

My Mumbai Local Train Experiences

CND-Mumbai street food friends selfie

I stayed near Marine Drive to take the train from Churchgate north to Bandra. There’s a great beach there with street food named Juhu Beach, which you can reach from the Santacruz station.

On off-hours, there is plenty of space. I was able to shoot a video and get great shots of the city as it woke up.

I took a peak-hour train, and there was some pushing and shoving. I ensured I was far enough inside the train to be clear of the doors as we sped through the stations.

But I did make one local mad. He was trying to push by me and asked me to move so he could get by. Well, I couldn’t go anywhere and give him any space, so he had some harsh words for me. But he made it past fine though, so no harm was done.

Everyone else was friendly and helpful. I made friends in the ticket line and asked about how to board, and tips from a local girl.

Overall, it’s an experience you’ll want to have in Mumbai. And it beats sitting in traffic, which can be pretty jammed.

Mumbai’s Local Trains: A Glimpse into Their Fascinating Past

mumbai local train and tracks with power lines

When I rode theMumbai local, amidst the cacophony and crowds, I enjoyed thinking about what it must have been like ridign these trains over a hunrded years ago.

These trains are more than just a mode of transport – they’re a living testament to Mumbai’s ever-evolving saga.

Here are some intriguing highlights from the tapestry of Mumbai’s local trains:

1. The Birth of a Legacy – 1853:

Can you believe that Mumbai’s train system is over a century old? The first train in India ran between Bori Bunder (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and Thane on April 16, 1853. It marked the start of Mumbai’s love affair with local trains and India’s tryst with railways.

2. The Transition to Electric:

Initially, steam locomotives pulled these trains, belching out clouds of smoke. But come 1925, Mumbai saw its first electric train, a massive leap forward in efficiency and speed. The line? Between Bombay VT (Victoria Terminus) and Kurla.

Fun Fact: The decision to electrify the railways was taken in 1915, and it took a whole decade for the dream to become a reality!

3. The Introduction of the Iconic DC/AC System:

In the early days, Mumbai’s trains ran on a Direct Current (DC) system. However, this system wasn’t energy-efficient. After years of planning and groundwork, by 2012, the entire Mumbai local train network transitioned to the Alternating Current (AC) system, marking a significant technological advancement.

4. Ladies’ Special – Empowering Women since 1982:

On May 5, 1982, Mumbai introduced a monumental train service – the “Ladies’ Special.” Dedicated exclusively to women, this initiative ensured safer and more comfortable travel for the city’s female populace.

5. More than Just Trains – Lifelines:

During Mumbai’s devastating floods in 2005, when most of the city came to a standstill, the local trains played a pivotal role. They resumed operations faster than most other services, becoming a beacon of hope and resilience for the city. It was a stark reminder of their crucial role in Mumbai’s daily life.

6. Architectural Wonders:

Many of Mumbai’s train stations, like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), are architectural marvels and have historical significance. CSMT, formerly known as Victoria Terminus, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its Victorian Gothic Revival architecture.

7. Platform Tales:

Dadar station, one of Mumbai’s busiest, sees footfalls equivalent to the entire population of a small country every day! It’s a bustling hub connecting the Western and Central railway lines. The first time I visited, the sheer number of people left me awestruck. It truly epitomizes the phrase ‘Mumbai never stops’.

Every hum, rattle, and rhythm of the local trains tells a story – tales of progress, a city’s growth, dreams, and challenges. As you travel on these trains, remember you’re not just commuting. You’re becoming a part of Mumbai’s rich, enthralling history. Enjoy the journey!

Is the Mumbai Local Train safe for tourists?

Absolutely, just maintain general vigilance. Watch your belongings, be polite, and move with the flow. Stay clear of the doors and don’t try hanging out the door for a great photo. People die every year riding the local train

How do Mumbai locals feel about tourists?

Mostly warm and welcoming, but avoid photographing without permission. Be ready to move with the flow of traffic. Be sure to let those coming and going have space, even this means doing some pressing yourself. Personal space is not too common during rush hour on the local trains.

Final Thoughts

Navigating the Mumbai local trains might seem daunting initially, but with the right insights and a bit of local knowledge, you’ll master the art in no time.

Remember, learning how to travel Mumbai’s local trains is not just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about immersing yourself in the city’s vibrant rhythm, connecting with its soul, and witnessing the spirit of Mumbaikars firsthand.

So, the next time you’re on the platform, ticket in hand, waiting for your train, take a deep breath, embrace the adventure, and know that you’re about to experience one of the most authentic aspects of life in this incredible city. Safe travels and happy riding!

Getting Around Mumbai: Guide to Public Transportation

daily travel in mumbai local

Pavel Sipachev/Getty Images

Despite Mumbai being the nation's financial capital, public transportation here lags behind other major Indian cities. The Metro train rapid transit system is still under construction, and right now only services an isolated part of the city. Most local trains and buses aren't air-conditioned—and they do get very crowded and uncomfortable—so tourists who visit Mumbai usually opt for other forms of transport. However, a ride on the Mumbai Suburban Railway (better known simply as the "local train") is a quintessential experience as it's part of India's oldest railway network, which dates back to 1853. What's more, the local train is the best way to avoid Mumbai's infamous traffic jams. Here's how to navigate transportation in Mumbai so you can get the most from your trip.

How to Ride the Mumbai Local Train

Mumbai local trains run in a north-south direction, which is beneficial for getting from one end of the city to the other. The train system is widely used by commuters heading to work in the city center. It carries more than 8 million passengers a day, making it one of the busiest commuter rail systems in the world and "Mumbai's life-line."

  • Routes: There are three lines: Western, Central, and Harbour. The Western Line, which runs from Churchgate in South Mumbai to the city's outer north, is most useful for tourists.
  • Types of passes: A Mumbai Local Tourist Pass provides unlimited travel on all lines of the local train network for one, three, or five days. If you're only going to make a few journeys, opt for single or roundtrip tickets instead.
  • Fares: The minimum fare is 5 rupees in Second Class, 50 rupees in First Class, and 65 rupees in Air-Conditioned Class. Tourist passes start from 75 rupees in Second Class or 275 rupees in First Class.
  • How to pay: Ticket counters at railway stations accept cash. To avoid the long lines, buy a rechargeable Smart Card, which will enable you to get tickets from the Automatic Ticket Vending Machines at the stations.
  • Hours of operation: From 4:15 a.m. until around 1 a.m. To be safe, only travel during the day between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., outside of rush hours.
  • Important things to know: Trains are classified as "Fast" (with few stops) or "Slow" (stopping at most or all stations). Each train has designated "ladies' compartments," which are carriages solely for female passengers. Both males and females are permitted in the other "general compartments."
  • Tips: Download the m-Indicator app for quick access to timetables and routes.

There is quite a learning curve, so make sure you read our detailed guide to riding the Mumbai local train in advance! This Mumbai local train map is also helpful.

The Mumbai Metro Train

Mumbai's air-conditioned Metro train rapid transit system is currently limited to one operational east-west line between Ghatkopar and Versova in the suburbs. The line runs past Mumbai airport and connects to the Mumbai local train network (Western and Harbour lines) at Andheri. You can take a direct train to South Mumbai from there, making it an inexpensive way of reaching the city's tourist district.

Note that the Metro doesn't stop right at the airport. The closest station is Airport Road, about 15 minutes on foot from the international terminal (taxis and auto rickshaws are options if you don't want to walk). Also keep in mind that you'll need to buy separate tickets to travel on the Metro and local trains. The Metro fare is 20 rupees one way, between Airport Road and Andheri stations. More information is available on the Mumbai Metro website .

Riding the Bus in Mumbai

Mumbai's distinctive, lumbering red B.E.S.T buses (some of which are double-decker) go everywhere that trains don't in the city. They're not very tourist-friendly though, so expect some challenges.

  • Routes: Details are available on this website or on the m-Indicator app. However, bus numbers and destinations are not always clearly displayed in English on the front of the buses. You may need to ask someone at the bus stop for assistance.
  • Fare: The minimum fare is 5 rupees, and tickets can be purchased onboard.
  • Important things to know: If you're keen to ride a double-decker bus, these days they only service Route 124 between Colaba Bus Station and Worli Depot via Crawford Market and Bhendi Bazaar. Route 123 is an ideal scenic route for tourists, as it runs along Marine Drive.

Taxis in Mumbai

Mumbai's iconic kaali-peeli black and yellow taxis are prevalent all over the city, particularly in South Mumbai (where auto rickshaws aren't permitted). Unlike many other cities in India, if you hail a taxi from the street in Mumbai, you won't have to argue with the driver to put the meter on—this means no inflated fixed-price fares, even for foreign tourists. Be aware that the driver may try to overcharge you by taking you the long way, though. In March 2021, the minimum fare was revised upwards from 22 rupees (30 cents) to 25 rupees for the first 1.5 kilometers. Beyond this, the rate is 16.93 rupees per kilometer. During the night, past midnight, the minimum fare is now 32 rupees.

Prepaid black and yellow taxis also remain a reliable way of getting from Mumbai airport to your hotel.

Ridesharing Apps

Ridesharing apps like Uber and Ola (the Indian equivalent of Uber) are popular alternatives for getting around Mumbai if you have Internet access on your phone . They're a good alternative to taxis because there's no need to explain to the driver where you want to go (as directions are often given based on landmarks rather than street names in Mumbai, this can be tricky). It's also possible to book an Uber by the hour in Mumbai, and for day trips out of the city (called "outstation" trips).

Although Uber rates have increased, and surge pricing applies when demand is high, the cost remains affordable. The minimum fare is 100 rupees (that's under $1.50). Ola tends to be a bit cheaper but the service standard is lower.

Auto Rickshaws in Mumbai

Mumbai has auto rickshaws, but they're only allowed in the suburbs—you won't find them in South Mumbai. However, they are the way to get around hip Bandra . Similar to taxis, auto rickshaws usually go by the meter in Mumbai. In March 2021, the minimum fare was revised upwards from 18 rupees to 21 rupees (25 cents) for the first 1.5 kilometers. Beyond this, the rate is 14.20 rupees per kilometer. During the night, past midnight, the minimum fare is now 27 rupees.

Ferries in Mumbai

Ferries operate during the day from the Gateway of India in Colaba to Elephanta Island and Alibaug . There are also speedboat services to Alibaug. However, both ferries and speedboats are suspended in the monsoon season from June to December.

If you have a car or motorbike, it can be taken aboard the fancy new RoRo (Roll on-Roll off) ferry service from Colaba to Mandwa jetty in Alibaug.

The Mumbai Monorail

Expansion of public transportation in Mumbai included the addition of a monorail line in 2014. It is of little use to tourists, though, as its route runs between Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk/Jacob's Circle in South Mumbai and Chembur in the eastern suburbs.

Tips for Getting Around Mumbai

  • Mumbai is notorious for its traffic congestion (it's rated among the worst globally). Many parts of the city are dug up by Metro train construction works, causing further delays. Rush hours can double your travel time, so plan your sightseeing to avoid being on the road between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.
  • Sundays are relatively traffic-free and are the best days to make extended trips across the city.
  • Stay close to tourist attractions in South Mumbai ( Colaba is a popular neighborhood ) so you don't have to travel too far.
  • Taxis that wait for customers outside popular hotels will usually demand a fixed-rate tourist price if you hire them. Do negotiate.
  • Uber or Ola really are your best bet for a prompt and fuss-free ride.

Mumbai Local Trains: Transporting 7 Million People Per Day

  • February 12, 2016
  • 5 minute read

“And at the moment of contact, they do not know if the hand that is reaching for theirs belongs to a Hindu or Muslim or Christian or Brahmin or untouchable or whether you were born in this city or arrived only this morning or whether you live in Malabar Hill or New York or Jogeshwari; whether you’re from Bombay or Mumbai or New York… Come on board, they say. We’ll adjust.” –Suketu Mehta, Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found

Mumbai is home to India’s corporate powerhouses, its entertainment industry, the dreams of an entire nation, and 22 million people who make this city come alive. The rhythmic clatter of local trains searing through the city is the sound of its beating heart (captured by A. R. Rahman in ‘O Saya’ from the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire). The city is a cluster of islands that were reclaimed to form a single, sprawling land mass, flanked by the sea on two sides. Owing to geographical constraints, growing towards the north was the only way this city could expand and accommodate the millions of people who have kept surging in over the years. Most business districts, however, are still located towards the south, which means that a vast majority of the city is compelled to traverse great distances to get to work. The Mumbai local trains are the best way to do that. Carrying over 7.4 million passengers every day, they are the lifelines of this city.

mumbai local train

Spread over 427 km, Mumbai’s local trains run over three arterial routes that connect the city’s southern hubs to the suburbs located in the north going up to Dahanu in the west, beyond Kalyan in the northeast, and all the way through Navi Mumbai. The first railway in Mumbai — built in 1853 to connect Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus with Thane over 34 km away — has now spawned this behemoth that runs over 2,600 services every day, one of the largest suburban rail networks in the world.

Though the system is almost always pushed to its limits, the railways have state-of-the-art systems to manage their fleet and keep the trains running like clockwork day after day. In a city where people need to keep tight schedules, you can depend on your train to be on time to the minute, even at a frequency of one train every two minutes during the peak hours. Through incessant rains or the aftermath of a terror attack, the Mumbai local trains keep running and get you where you need to be.

mumbai local train

The Mumbai local train network has undergone several rounds of improvements over the years. The diesel locomotives have long since been replaced by Electric Multiple Units (trains consisting of self-propelled carriages, using electricity as the motive power) that allow the trains to operate with minimal disturbance even as they speed through the dense suburbs. EMUs are quieter and pollution free — attributes that are essential when trains pass by houses that are often at touching distance. The ability to operate without a separate locomotive also allows the trains to be scaled up in size. The 9 carriage trains have given way to 12 and 15 carriage trains . The platforms in their current state are equipped to handle 18 carriages. This has helped ease the overcrowding to some extent.

The carriages, built by Siemens, are also a study in user experience and design. There had been clamor from many quarters to adopt the style of seating that is seen in metros ( longitudinally aligned seats ) but the railways decided to continue with the current layout that lets 3-4 people sit comfortably on each bench. Many people travel 4 hours in the Mumbai local trains every day. You can often see women cutting vegetables on their way home and groups of strangers chanting devotional songs together; people have built their lives around the local trains. Optimizing their comfort while maximizing the standing room within the compartments is imperative. Forced induction to reduce CO2 levels is the next step on the way. Air-conditioned compartments are also on the horizon and should be pushed into service over the coming months.

The railway stations and ticket queues too are important aspects of the suburban railway ecosystem and many steps have been taken over the past few years for their improvement. The stations have been equipped with escalators recently. Over the years, the station overbridges have also been connected to extended walkways in many parts of the city. This allows pedestrians to reach their destination swiftly on foot without having to negotiate the road traffic and makes walking a pleasant experience.

In addition to Smart Cards and Automated Ticket Vending Machines, the UTSOnMobile app was launched a few months back. This allows passengers to book e-tickets for their local train commute instantly and complete the payment online. These initiatives have gone a long way in helping commuters negotiate the long queues at railway stations.

Standing on the gate of a local train as it zooms through the city is one of the most liberating experiences in Mumbai. But some people take this a step too far and pay a heavy price for the thrills. In spite of all that has been done for the convenience of the passengers, safety remains a prime concern on the Mumbai local train network. Old habits die hard, and despite the presence of several conveniently located overhead passes, a few people still try to take a shortcut and scoot across the railway lines.

To curb this tendency, the railways have now adopted a behavioral approach. In addition to regular cautionary announcements, they have replaced the stick-figure signboards with a graphic image, featuring in extreme close-up the horror-struck face of a man being plowed down by a locomotive . A warning like that is hard to ignore. They have also painted alternate sets of railway ties in fluorescent yellow to help people gauge how quickly the train is approaching. The lack of perspective about a train’s true speed is a major reason why people underestimate the risk in their attempt to cross a railway line.

mumbai local train

Perhaps the most beautiful aspect of the Mumbai local trains is its role as a great leveler. It isn’t uncommon to find the managers and janitors of a company traveling side by side in the local trains. With a 10 rupee ticket to traverse 30 km in an hour, avoid the pollution of the jammed expressways, and get you to your destination on time every time, the local trains of Mumbai exemplify the best of what this city stands for — grit, reliability, and the determination to get the job done and keep surging ahead.

Table of Contents

1. e-tickets, 2. m-indicator, 3. ladies, general and handicapped compartments, 4. first class and ac locals, 5. fast and slow trains, 6. peak hours, 7. ask questions, 8. virar locals (western line only), stand on the correct side, 10. confusing platforms and station names.

Welcome to Mumbai. The most common mode of transport used by the people in the city are the local trains, the lifeline of Mumbai. The cost of living in Mumbai is high, which is why people do not mind spending even 4 hours commuting to their workplace or college. Travelling by local trains can seem a bit daunting, but with these tips you’ll master the art soon. Eventually you’ll get so used to it, you’ll call yourself a pro. Are you ready to begin your journey? Here’s a guide with everything you need to know!

The routes are divided into 3 lines: Western, Central and Harbour and these tips are applicable to all of them.

mumbai local ticket machine

Reach a ticket counter anytime and you’ll be caught up in a long queue. If you’re running late it could be worse. The best way to avoid all of it is to book tickets online through the UTS app . Either book paperless tickets or tickets you can print at the ATVM machines at the stations. You can also get yourself a smart card using which you can book your tickets through the ATVM machine and skip the queue . This is perfect for those not travelling frequently. If you are a daily traveller , get yourself a monthly, quarterly or yearly pass that will save you both money and time.

Also note that you cannot be at a station without a ticket , even if you’re not boarding a train, you will require a platform ticket.

m indicator

M-indicator is a mobile application that is a blessing for everyone travelling by local trains. You can check train schedules , ticket fares and also track where the train is. It also tells you which platform the train will halt on and provides travel routes to your destination. There is also a train chat option, where users discuss train schedules, notify about problems and any other queries. The app notifies users when there will be a Mega block (track maintenance). This app is really helpful for anyone travelling in Mumbai. Apart from locals, you can get information about BEST buses, ferries, metro, outstation trains and much more.

mumbai local compartments

A train is divided into various compartments for the ease of its travellers. There are 4 ladies compartments (including the first class). This is for the comfort and safety of female passengers travelling, especially during peak hours. While some are 24hr ladies only, the others allow men after 11pm till 5am .

There is also a handicapped compartment for people with disabilities and is indicated with a sign and a beep sound on the platform. People diagnosed with cancer and women in advanced stages of pregnancy are also allowed to travel in this compartment. Anyone else found travelling can be fined.

The general compartments include 3 general first class and the rest are second class compartments. Anyone can travel in it. It is not a men’s compartment . But it is better for women to avoid using it when it is extremely crowded.

first class and ac mumbai local

Your regular 12 coach train will be divided into First Class and Second Class. There are 3 General First Class and One Ladies First Class. If you’re travelling during peak hours, you won’t see much difference in the amount of crowd there, sometimes it can be more due to fewer compartments. But if you travel during non peak hours or on a holiday you’ll get empty first class compartments, while the second class will be crowded(not peak hour crowd)

First class passengers do not have to wait in the queue for booking a ticket or pass and can directly go to the counter. If anyone asks just tell them you are booking a first class ticket. The first class has cushioned seats and the compartment has stripes painted on the outside along with “ I ” written.

The prices of first class tickets can be more than 10 times that of a second class ticket. The price differs as per the distance. A first class pass is cheaper than buying a ticket everyday and is around 3 times the price of a second class pass. If you’re a student, you can get a concession on the first class pass by filling a form in your respective college. The benefits totally depend on the time you travel at.

There are also AC locals available at certain timings. The cost of the tickets are higher than that of first class and the trains are always empty.

fast and slow trains mumbai

There are both fast and slow trains. Fast trains are those that halt only at certain stations. Slow trains on the other hand halt at every station. The indicator will display F and S respectively. There are also semi fast trains, that are fast up to a particular station and slow after that. Before boarding a fast train make sure it halts at the station you want to get off at. The indicator displays “destination- scheduled time- F / S- expected in minutes ” in that particular order. For example “Bo 8:42 F 03” (destination Borivali, 8:42 Fast train, expected in 3 minutes)

mumbai train peak hours

While travelling try avoiding the peak hours. This is between 8 am to 10 am (towards Churchgate and CST) and between 5 pm to 7 pm (towards Virar and Thane) . This is usually when everyone leaves for and from work and getting caught up in this rush hour is horrible. It is not an exaggeration. And if you’re new to the city, be sure to skip around 3-4 trains at this time till you finally push your way through. The trains are overcrowded and people hang right outside. You want to avoid this as much as you can.

If you have to travel at this time, DO NOT get into the compartments near the ladies first class. Always opt for the middle compartments, or the ones at the beginning in the direction the train is heading. These compartments usually tend to be a little less crowded.

ask questions

Think of this as a golden rule. Always ask. Ask people where they’re getting off and make sure the one ahead has the same destination as you or be ready to reach a few stations ahead while people behind you yell at you.

If you want a seat , ask people where they will be getting off and claim the seat. Tell them you will sit there next. You cannot expect to get a seat without claiming one. It may seem weird at the start, but you’ll get used to it.

Ask people around you if you’re confused. The people selling at the stalls are aware about everything and will help you. It’s better to ask more than one person to be sure.

virar locals

Virar locals are a nightmare during rush hours for anyone travelling on the Western line, if you’re not getting off beyond Borivali. Trying to get off at Andheri or Borivali is quite a task, speaking from personal experience. You will be asked why you couldn’t take a Borivali local and will be allowed to get off with great difficulty. So it would be great if you avoid boarding Virar locals during rush hours if you plan to get off before Borivali.

9. Unspoken Rules

unspoken rules of mumbai locals

Bag in the front always . This makes sure that all your belongings are safe . Locals and platforms are crowded, and having an eye on your bag is necessary. This is also important to ensure that your bag doesn’t get in the way of yourself or others while getting on or off. Keeping your bag behind may be a hindrance for anyone trying to get in after you and also it may get stuck while you’re trying to get off.

While travelling during rush hour, make sure you stand on the side from where people will be getting off. They usually leave space for people getting in and you do not want to be blocked by that crowd. Don’t forget to confirm if the person ahead is getting off at the same station as you!

station names in mumbai

Stations that have multiple lines running can sometimes be confusing. For example Dadar western line and central line have different platforms with the same numbers. So make sure you’re at the right place to board the right train.

Other confusing things can be stations with similar names on different lines. For example the station Matunga Road is on the western line while Matunga is on the central line. Similarly Lower Parel is on the western line and Parel on the central line, and no they’re not the same, in fact to reach Parel from the western line you have to get off at Prabhadevi and use the bridge to get to the Central line. Yep! It’s confusing.  Also, keep in mind names of stations that have changed, some people may still refer to them using the old names.

Hope this gives you some insight on what it’s like travelling by local trains. You’ll learn as you travel and you’ll learn everyday. Try ignoring small faults and avoid getting into unnecessary fights(especially with ladies) Don’t hesitate to ask people even the silliest detail if you’re confused!

Travel safe!

My First Mumbai Local Train Experience – Bandra To Andheri

Surreal evening in Paris at Eiffel Tower

Prior to my recent trip to Mumbai, I had heard and seen a lot of stories where people were offboarded at a station they didn’t intend to by the crowd. Hence, I was scared to get on a metro fearing that I’d miss my station because of the crowd. Fortunately, my first Mumbai local train from Bandra to Andheri wasn’t quite like that. Glad that my first Mumbai local train experience was a good one!

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you know that I’ve been in Mumbai for the last few weeks. I had spent a maximum of 8 hours in Mumbai before this trip. During that trip, things were quite fast and I barely spent time anywhere. So this time around when I was there to board the Cordelia Cruise for the Mumbai High Seas cruise , I decided to stay back in Mumbai.

I realised that I had so many people to meet, places to visit and obviously food to eat, I needed to slow travel in Mumbai and spend some time. So I decided to stay back for a couple of weeks to explore the city.

Moving around Mumbai is easy – only if you know where you are, where you want to go and the mode . From autos to Kaali Peeli, metro to local, there are numerous ways to get around in Mumbai. Mumbai local train is the cheapest and the best.

Bandra To Andheri Mumbai Local Train

Mumbai as a city is rectangular in shape if I can say so. It’s an elongated piece of land surrounded by the Arabian Sea on two sides and mountains and land on the other. The city has got one of the best local train networks compared to any other city in India. Every day millions of people use the Mumbai local to commute. Irrespective of the weather and situation, the Mumbai local train has been there for the people. No wonder it’s the lifeline of Mumbai.

Before you board a local train in Mumbai, you must know the source and destination, the type of local and whether it will go to the destination where you want to go or not. If you are travelling to Mumbai for the first time, then you should read my How To Travel in Mumbai Local Train – For Non-Mumbaikers . Having spent a couple of weeks in Mumbai and using the local train, I’ve written this guide based on my experience. I’m sure you’ll find it helpful.

Mumbai Local Train Guide For Non Mumbaikers

Going from Bandra to Andheri on a local train is quite easy. Trains run at a frequency of a few minutes. So if you are on a leisure trip or just exploring the city you can take on based on your preference. The distance from Bandra to Andheri is about 13 km, the ticket price is Rs 5 and the travel time is about 15 minutes on a slow local train .

One can purchase the tickets from the counter, use the Automated Ticket Vending machines or book Mumbai local train tickets online too. I chose to book it via the vending machine at Bandra terminus. I paid Rs 10 for the return ticket and was all set to experience my first Mumbai local train from Bandra to Andheri.

My First Mumbai Local Train Experience

It was around 6 PM when I reached the station. I was overwhelmed looking at the crowd itself on the foot over bridge. Franky, I did feel a bit scared just looking at the crowd. The display board were quite confusing (not anymore) and I had to ask a couple of people before reaching the platform. Finally, I was at the platform, standing between a huge crowd waiting to board the train.

My First Mumbai Local Train Experience

I knew that getting on the train wasn’t tough, getting out surely was. Within a few minutes, the train arrived and I was on the train in a jiffy. Like the Delhi Metro , the sides of the platforms are fixed. So people stand at the doors based on the station they want to get down at.

Since I wasn’t aware of it, I stood in the middle. I was surrounded by seasoned pros of the Mumbai local train. Some are busy discussing the markets while others listen to music. Everyone was chilled except me. I’m so glad that the local train has an announcement and display board.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Atulmaharaj (@atulmaharaj)

While there’s no map like on the metro train , the display board and the announcements do help. I was constantly looking at the board waiting for it to flash Andheri. In a few mins time, it read Andheri and I quickly made my way through the crowd to get to the gate as soon as possible.

As the station approached, the seasoned pros arrived at the gate. They knew exactly when to get down and how to find their way. The speed of the train slowed down a little and the seasoned folks were already on the platform. I was still waiting for the train to come to a complete stop. A few folks hung to the door giving way to the passengers. I just followed the crowd, and thanks to a gentle push, I was safely down on the platform. Phew! Quite a ride for a first time experience.

Wish every city had a local like Mumbai Local

I got down at the station and headed straight to the nearby shop and bought a glass of Kokum juice. By the time I finished it, another local train went past. I was so relaxed that I had successfully boarded and deboarded the local train. I realised that timing is the key when travelling in Mumbai local train. If you’re on a leisure trip, make sure you time your travel to avoid the crowd.

Ever since my first Mumbai local train ride, I took almost 8-10 rides on the Mumbai local during my stay and I can say that I quite understand how the Mumbai local works. Though I’m still a non-Mumbaikar, I have a fairly good knowledge of Mumbai local train now. So if you’re travelling to Mumbai for the first time and have any queries related to Mumbai locals, feel free to reach out to me.

Travel Options – For Daily Commuters and Tourists in Mumbai

“As a resident of Mumbai, we are familiar with the various transportation options available for commuting within the city, such as roadways and railways. However, for those who are visiting from other states or countries (tourists), here is a comprehensive list, along with details and personal recommendations, of all the public transportation options available in Mumbai, including buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis, metro trains, and local trains. This information will assist in distinguishing between the different modes of transportation and help in deciding the most suitable option for daily travel. Table of Contents Toggle Travel Options and Minimum Basic Charges Local Trains, Fastest and Crowded Travel Option Mumbai Metro Trains Commuting in BEST Bus Auto Rickshaw Travel Travel in Taxi and App Based Fleets Rent a Cycle For Travel and Health It will also provide guidance on the best public transportation choices for tourists looking to avoid traffic, crowds, and pollution in the city. Additionally, there are alternative options available during peak office hours. While both cheap and expensive travel options have their own costs and conveniences in the city, prioritizing time-saving should be your main concern while commuting. We hope that the information provided below will be beneficial in making informed decisions regarding transportation in Mumbai.”

Travel Options and Minimum Basic Charges

First, let’s explore the transportation choices available in Mumbai. To find out the most affordable options, here are the various ways you can travel within Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. Keep in mind that Thane and Navi Mumbai are nearby cities with varying travel costs.

Please be aware that taxi fares are higher during the night compared to the day. Night charges apply from midnight (00:00 AM) until early morning (5:00 AM), and regular taxis charge an extra 50% during this time. Additionally, before starting your journey, note that the waiting charges are Rs. 1.50 per minute, which amounts to an extra Rs. 90 per hour.

Furthermore, please note that the minimum fare rates mentioned below may change frequently within a year. It is recommended to visit the individual travel options and their revised fares articles on this blog. Starting from 1st July, BEST buses have reduced commuting rates by up to 50% for both AC and non-AC buses.

* Note : All Rates in Indian Rupees (INR), Average Dollar to Rupees Rate as of date is Rs.66

You may already know about the 5 main travel options in Mumbai: Local Trains, Metro Trains, BEST Buses, Auto-rickshaws, and Taxis. Mono Rails are also available in limited locations. Among these, BEST Buses are the cheapest and most commonly used by daily commuters. Some people prefer to travel by Auto-rickshaws and Taxis, especially if their company reimburses the travel expenses.

However, the most crowded yet reliable and time-saving option is the Mumbai local trains, which operate on 3 major routes: Western, Central, and Harbour. Metro Trains have also made commuting easier for daily travelers between Andheri/Versova and Ghatkopar, as well as commercial areas like Seepz and MIDC. More Metro projects are planned to provide citizens with convenient, improved, and affordable commuting options.

Below is most to least crowded Travel Options of city, Lets dig in deeper to understand them all individually.

Local Trains, Fastest and Crowded Travel Option

Mumbai Local Trains are known as the lifeline of the city due to the high population during peak hours. Every day, millions of commuters rely on local trains for their daily commute , spending around 3 to 4 hours just to reach their workplaces. Surprisingly, many senior executives prefer the first-class compartment of local trains over air-conditioned cars, as Mumbai roads are notorious for heavy traffic. If you are a tourist, I would suggest traveling during non-office hours, between 11:30 AM and 4:30 PM, to experience a less crowded journey.

3 Main Routes that connects every corner of city and its neighbourhoods are Western , Central and Harbour Routes.

Suburbs are mentioned when discussing certain routes. Western and Central are two suburban areas known for their train stations located beyond South Mumbai. Trains are an affordable and quick mode of transportation in Mumbai. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the routes, station names, and train schedules to reach your desired tourist spot. Learn more about local train travel, timetables, ticket prices, ATVM ticketing, and videos before embarking on your journey.

Mumbai Metro Trains

Mumbai Metro : It was 2014, the coolest thing started for all those local trains tired and auto hunting frustrated commuters in city, Myself personally observed and experienced the first day excitement of the very first line 1 of Mumbai metro train ride to get some videos, pictures and information to spread around.

Mumbai is just as exciting on the first day, with its natural chaos that locals experience when traveling by local trains. I recommend taking the metro from the Railway station to Versova (Andheri) instead of searching for an auto, paying high fees, wasting time, and dealing with unnecessary traffic.

This is the first completed Metro project (Line 1) in Mumbai. More projects are in progress and some will take about a decade to complete. There are challenges to overcome, but my article will provide details on fares, timetable, route, pictures, and videos. The Metro connects Western Suburb (Andheri) to Central Suburb (Ghatkopar), making it a convenient option for saving time and money for Mumbaikars. Travelers to Seepz and MIDC area in Andheri East appreciate the convenience of this Metro.

Commuting in BEST Bus

BEST Buses (AC and NON AC) : The next popular choice for transportation is the BEST buses, which are divided into Regular Non AC and BRTS AC buses. It is the second most crowded public transport option, but many people choose it because it is affordable and reaches odd routes and interior village locations in the suburbs, saving time compared to taking the Local trains.

BEST bus routes are carefully designed to reach even the remote villages in the suburbs. Despite facing challenges and financial losses, they have reduced ticket prices by half to attract more passengers. The regular buses are decent, while the AC buses are well-kept, making them a top choice for corporate professionals looking for a pollution-free and comfortable commute.

For daily commuters, it is one of the best travel options with day and monthly pass facilities available. However, if you are a tourist, I highly recommend taking a ride in south Mumbai or even better, a suburb ride at least once. You can take Bus No.202 starting at Mahim Depot to Gorai or 79 LTD (now starting from Santacruz Bus Depot West) as it covers many prime locations like Lokhandwala Complex and goes through Link Road. This will give you a true experience of a city bus ride and allow you to observe the real life and market feel of Mumbai.

Auto Rickshaw Travel

A 3-seater and 3-wheeled vehicle in Mumbai, privately owned by individuals and used as public transportation with valid permits and licenses, is commonly known as a ‘Rickshaw’ or ‘Auto’. It is a great mode of transportation when the roads are less congested, there are no potholes during the monsoon season, and the weather is cool. However, nowadays, auto rides are not as cheap as they used to be a decade ago.

The minimum fares have increased, and for every extra kilometer, the fare jumps by Rs.1.50. In just a 15-minute ride, the fare can reach up to Rs.50, depending on the traffic. Some people avoid taking autos due to the pollution caused by buses and trucks passing by. Despite these factors, autos are still in high demand and will continue to be so.

If you’re in a rush to get somewhere, missed your bus, or need to catch your regular train to work on time, taking an auto is a quick travel option. The quality of your ride depends on the driver’s mood, as they are used to navigating speed breakers and potholes. Most auto drivers in Mumbai rent their vehicles and pay a fixed amount daily, so vehicle maintenance is not a top priority, resulting in rough rides. For tourists looking to travel short distances in the city, taking an auto is a better choice than local trains.

Mumbai no longer has any meter cheats due to the use of digital meters, eliminating cases of tampering. Fare charts are no longer necessary. However, if you want to check auto fares, you can visit this link: auto fares . Refusals are still an issue, especially during office hours. There are no indicators on autos to show if they are for hire or busy, leading to drivers taking advantage of refusals. Mumbai has a mix of helpful Samaritans and indifferent drivers, so it’s hard to make a definitive judgment on their behavior.

Travel in Taxi and App Based Fleets

There is a lot happening in the city regarding the taxi regulations and fare charges. The fight between traditional taxis and app-based fleets is causing inconvenience to commuters and tourists. When taxi unions go on strike, people have to find alternative transportation options. The issue of fare charges and the use of mobile apps like Android and iOS are not accepted by regular taxi drivers, who have been operating in the city for decades.

In order to compete with app-based aggregators and rivals, the traditional yellow and black taxi app 9211 has already been planned. However, there has been no update on the status of this app-based transportation option for several months now. Therefore, we will have to wait and see.

NOTE : Kali-Peeli Taxi NO MORE in operation (2024).

In South Mumbai (Mahim to Churchgate Area), people are willing to pay more for taxis when there are no auto rickshaws available. During strikes by regular Black and Yellow taxis, commuters have to rely on local trains, buses, or expensive app-based fleets. Some private radio cab companies, like Uber, have increased their fares by 50 to 100 percent during strikes. For more information on travel options, including prices, check out the link provided above. AC taxis and cool cabs are recommended for tourists looking for a pollution-free commute.

Rent a Cycle For Travel and Health

Yes, Soon the Go Green travel option will be out as has already been declared that government are planning ‘Rent a Cycle’ as a brand new option to travel short distances within city. This will be amazing if the system and management are strong, cycles are well maintained, No renting hurdles like ID Cards and Deposits etc and renting costs are cheaper. Many repair shops might get a new job and contract if hired for same. City will have less pollution and a happy feel to commute, As one can skip the walker session inside gym saving another 15 minutes.

Many residents are now choosing to ride bicycles early in the morning for exercise. As more people recognize the advantages of cycling, our city streets will become less crowded. Several cycling groups have become popular recently. I will add videos and photos once the city gets its first bike station. Follow us on GOOGLE+ for updates.

Fully vaccinated people who wish to obtain the monthly pass can approach these help desks which have been set up near ticket counters of railway stations.

Eligible citizens should carry original hard copies of the final vaccination certificate along with proof of a government-issued photo identity (preferably Aadhar Card). They are also need to carry a coloured photocopy of the photo ID and the final vaccination certificate.

Both these documents are absolutely necessary to enter the railway station premises.

Once the verification of these documents is completed, the certificate and the identification proof will be stamped by the authorities. The monthly pass can be obtained after showing the stamped copies of the documents at the railway ticket counter.

How can people obtain the pass online?

The Relief and Rehabilitation Department of the Maharashtra had set up an online portal to provide e-passes to those associated with essential services. People can now visit the same website ( https://epassmsdma.mahait.org ) to obtain their monthly passes.

Eligible citizens can visit the site, click on the ‘Travel Pass for Vaccinated Citizens’ option and key in the mobile number they have used while registration for vaccination.

Users will then get an OTP via SMS, on entering which they need to input details like name, mobile number, beneficiary reference number, etc, and click on the ‘Generate Pass’ option.

The site will then automatically show the details of applicant, including the vaccination dates. Applicants must then upload their photographs under the self-image option.

After completion of this process, a message will appear stating that applicant will receive a link in 48 hours via SMS. Once the link is received, the e-pass can be obtained.

The actual monthly pass can be obtained on showing this e-pass at a railway ticket counter.

The e-pass will be issued if at least 14 days have been completed since receiving the second vaccine dose. If anybody applies before that, s/he will receive the e-pass only after the stipulated period has been completed.

Apart from the fully vaccinated people, who else are allowed to travel by the local trains?

Government and semi-government employees, as well as those associated with essential services, will be allowed to travel by the local trains irrespective of their vaccination status.

Who all are not eligible to commute by the local trains?

People who have not been fully vaccinated, or have not completed at least 14 days since receiving the second dose, are not eligible to travel.

Also, fully vaccinated citizens can travel with the monthly pass only and cannot buy tickets for a single journey. Daily season tickets can, however, be used by government employees and those associated with essential services.

Travelling in Mumbai is easy with these apps

daily travel in mumbai local

Daily travel in a densely populated city like Mumbai is a tough task. Though, Mumbai has a strong network of local transport that includes train, metro and bus routes, getting in and around the city can be difficult and tiresome. Using paid cab services are comfortable alternatives, but the cost and traffic jams mean they’re not feasible for a daily traveler. One of the affordable modes of transport is the Mumbai rail. It is the lifeline of Mumbai, which works flawlessly day and night and can get you to your destination, on time. Local trains have first, second and AC class options with reasonable ticket fares. Getting tickets for local trains during peak hours can be a task. Smart cards and monthly passes are ways to stay away from long queues, but renewing them have traditionally been at ticket counters.

What if we tell you that daily commutes can be made easy using your smartphone ? Of late, many of these tasks for planning train journeys, checking schedules, even buying tickets can be done online.

Why use apps?

Two of the most popular apps for planning and booking train journeys are M-indicator and UTS, designed specifically for Mumbaikars. M-indicator is a local train transportation app that provides schedules for trains, even buses and metros. The app is easy to use and is up-to-date. Once you have your journey planned, the UTS app (available for Android and iPhones) can be used to book tickets. This is a great initiative taken by Indian Railways to boost paperless ticketing using digital payments. It also encourages passengers by saving efforts and time taken for getting a train ticket. Most importantly, passengers no longer have to carry cash or physical cards in their wallets.

Finding the best routes on M-indicator

daily travel in mumbai local

Travelling by trains becomes effortless when you know its exact timing, the status and the platform on which they arrive. Thankfully, these details are available on M-indicator and the best bit is, it works offline. Launch the app, type the station name you are at and select the route you want to travel by. You’ll see a list of slow and fast trains with their timings and platforms they’ll arrive on. Besides local trains, M-indicator also provides timing and route information for Metro, BEST buses, also rickshaw and taxi fares. If you are new to Mumbai, you can rely on M-Indicator to explore Mumbai by fetching popular places to shop, hotels, picnic spots, properties, movies theaters and more. The latest M-indicator version 17 (available for Android and iPhones), lets you check news and updates of western, central, harbour, trans- harbour and Uran lines. Passengers using the app can post real-time status updates of trains using a chat feature.

Ticketing on your phone, using the UTS app

daily travel in mumbai local

In addition to M-indicator, the UTS app (Unreserved Ticketing System) makes life simpler for commuters. It’s been around for a while now and is available for both, Android devices and iPhones. UTS is an online train ticket booking app, where passengers can avoid long queues and book tickets on their smartphones. The pre-requisites to avail UTS services are that the passenger needs to be above 17 years in age and should own an Android, Windows or iPhone device. Once you have the app installed, register by providing relevant personal details and proceed. You’ll now see a R-wallet with no balance created. R-wallet is a digital wallet by Indian Railway integrated within the UTS app . You need to top-up it is using a payment option such as net banking, debit card, credit card or UPI. Other options to top-up R-wallet are Paytm, MobiKwik and FreeCharge. In addition to local train tickets, you can also book platform and season tickets.

To book paperless tickets, simply enter the source and destination stations and complete the payment process using R-wallet. You can check the booking history or view recently booked tickets under the “Show Booked Ticket” tab. This is also useful when the Ticket Checker (TC) asks for it. The paperless ticket is valid for two hours from the time of booking. Passengers can issue passes or renew monthly, quarterly, half yearly or yearly train passes using the app. Click on the season ticket tap, enter journey details and personal details to confirm. The paper mode of tickets can be booked from anywhere. On using this option, the passenger is assigned a unique booking ID along with ticket details via SMS. An individual must enter the booking ID on the ATVM, OCR machine from the originating station and take a print of it.

UTS app is easy to use and make life simpler. There are few things to keep in mind when using this app. To avoid misuse of this online ticket service, tickets must be booked between 30 meters to 2 km from the source railway station. Also, the passenger travelling must carry the smartphone from which the ticket is booked.

Alternative modes of commuting

daily travel in mumbai local

Besides trains, many of us might travel by BEST or NMMT buses for shorter commutes. Mumbai also has a strong network of buses. Like local trains, travelling in peak hours can be hectic at times. Imagine standing in a crowded bus and the bus conductor asks for a ticket. The act of balancing yourself and searching your wallet for change, for buying ticket is sheer chaos. Now, you can book bus tickets from your smartphone using the Ridlr app . It is similar to the UTS ticket booking app, but it lets you buy BEST and NMMT bus tickets online. Simple select the bus number, add the number of passengers and make the payment. Provide the token number to the ticket conductor and you’ll be given a printed ticket. The app additionally works as a travel planner, helping you find the best route, checking traffic situation and bus stops close to you.

The above mentioned apps are very useful for planning journeys and issuing tickets for trains and buses in a crowded city like Mumbai. The biggest advantage of these apps is it helps making daily commutes to work easy, saving time and money. These apps are truly a savior in a vast city like Mumbai.

Mumbai local: How to get QR code-based travel pass for train travel amid curbs

This universal travel pass will be valid for mumbai metro and monorail, apart from mumbai locals. while the pass is aimed at eliminating people travelling using fake cards, this pass will also have degrees depending on which the individual will be allowed to travel..

The Maharashtra government along with the railways is introducing a Universal Travel Pass with a QR code for travelling on Mumbai local trains as, despite the pandemic restrictions, people have been travelling using fake ID cards. In the wake of the new variant Delta Plus being reported from the state, the state government has brought back some restrictions in the state. After the second wave of the pandemic, Mumbai local services were never completely opened for the public. Only essential and emergency workers with valid ID proof can now travel by Mumbai locals. In the first week of June, the Maharashtra government announced a five-level unlock plan which has now been reduced to three, but nothing was announced about Mumbai local services.

Under the new pass system, only establishments are eligible to register their staff for the universal travel pass.(REUTERS)

What is a Universal travel pass?

Apart from the local trains, this pass will be valid for Mumbai Metro and monorail. While the pass is aimed at eliminating people travelling using fake cards, this pass will also have degrees depending on which the individual will be allowed to travel.

Here is how it will work

In accordance with Maharashtra's five-level unlocking, there will be several degrees of the pass. As level 5 of restrictions means effectively no restriction, those with Degree 5 card will be allowed to travel always. Rest will depend on what level of restriction Mumbai is in. For example, Mumbai at present is in level 3 restriction. A person with a Degree 3 pass will only be allowed to travel if the restrictions in effect are of levels 1, 2, or 3. If a commuter has a Degree 2 pass, he/she will be able to travel if the limitation level is 1 or 2, reports said.

Maharashtra government is introducing a stringent system to allow passengers in Mumbai local trains.

How to register

Only establishments can register for this pass on the website of the Disaster Management and Relief Fund Rehabilitation department of Maharashtra-- msdmacov19.mahait.org.

Click on Universal travel pass

Click on 'register your establishement'

The establishment authority will have to provide details like address, registration number, co-ordinator contact number, the number of staff who need the pass etc.

This application will be manually reviewed by the district disaster management authority and on approval, the coordinator will be able to log in using the mobile phone number and upload individual details of the staff who would be requiring the travel pass.

Staff name, ID, mobile number, gender, age, department, the designation will have to be provided.

Staff members will get SMS once the information is uploaded.

Then they can log in using their mobile number and uploading a photo, they can download their individual travel pass.

  • 9 Facts About The Mumbai...

Facts About Mumbai's Unique Local Train System

daily travel in mumbai local

Aptly called the “Lifeline of Mumbai,” it is very difficult to imagine the city without the local trains that traverse its various neighborhoods. Mumbai’s public rail network allows an individual to travel across the length and breadth of the city with extreme ease and efficiency. Here are nine reasons that make this train system unique.

It is the oldest railway system in Asia , launching April 16, 1853, with the first train taking a one-and-a-half hour journey between CST (then Bori Bunder) to Thane, with a halt at Sion to refuel.

Electricity

It has one of the most outdated electric rail system in the world. The Mumbai rails still run on electricity transmitted through overhead wires instead of a third rail.

Over-Crowded Capacity

Mumbai local trains are optimized to carry an average of 1,700 people per journey, but in actuality a train will carry almost 5,000 on average during peak hours (this fact is termed as Super Dense Crush Load). With a total of 7.5 million people in 2,342 trains that run daily, that means 2.7 billion people use the trains every year.

The Mumbai local at work

Trains Run Non-Stop

The engines of the Mumbai local have a short rest period. They will only stop working for 3-4 hours per engine because the Mumbai locals remain closed for a period of just 90 minutes per day. This makes it the busiest public transportation system in the world.

Affordability

The Mumbai railway is the cheapest mode of transport in the city. Not only is the network spread across 465 kilometers, but the most expensive ticket only costs 30 Rupees (roughly 50 cents USD).

They Feed the City

Without the Mumbai locals, most of the city would go hungry. The efficient and world famous dabbawala system of delivering food in Mumbai primarily relies on the Mumbai local trains.

Rush hour

Ghost Stations

Those traveling to Borivili on a daily basis would be aware of an invisible station called Thambewali that comes between Kandivali and Borivili station. While not an official stop, every train stops for a few minutes and people do get off the train here. (Every single train stopping here … sounds spooky, doesn’t it?)

Historical Traditions

For some reason, the first ladies coach near the motorman’s coach is called the Video Coach (maybe because of the small window between the ladies and gents compartments).

Commuters boarding and alighting

The Mumbai local trains are unbeatable and unstoppable under any circumstances. Even when they were attacked on July, 11, 2006, the system kept operating. Despite the serial blasts that threatened to paralyze the locals, the trains were still functional to a certain extent and were fully functional within 16 hours.

Double-dose vaccination mandatory to travel in Mumbai local trains – Know the complete Covid-19 travel guidelines here

Times Now Digital

The Maharashtra government said in its latest order that complete vaccination is mandatory for travel in Mumbai local trains for essential workers.

Double-dose vaccination mandatory to travel in Mumbai local trains – Know the complete Covid-19 travel guidelines here

Key Highlights

  • At present, the Central Railway and the Western Railway have been issuing monthly passes to only vaccinated passengers
  • The railways had yesterday announced resumption of suburban local services in Mumbai at 100 per cent capacity and pre-pandemic levels starting October 28

Mumbai: Amid decreasing vaccine hesitancy and controlled relaxations in the advent of a potential third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the government of Maharashtra on Tuesday issued fresh guidelines for commuters of the Mumbai local train network.

“Full vaccination mandatory for travel in Mumbai local trains for essential workers and government employees,” the state government said in its latest notification.

Elaborating on who qualifies as a ‘vaccinated person’, the order stated that this includes people who have completed both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine and 14 days have lapsed since the administration of the second dose.

“With regard to the issue of passes for train travel, any kind of passes (monthly/ quarterly/ half yearly, etc.) are allowed to be issued to commuters who fall within the definition of ‘vaccinated persons’,” the government said.

At present, the Central Railway and the Western Railway have been issuing monthly passes to only vaccinated passengers instead of daily tickets in order to reduce crowding.

It is to be noted here that both the railways had yesterday said that suburban local services in Mumbai will operate at 100 per cent capacity and pre-pandemic levels starting October 28. However, the existing restrictions remain unchanged. The step was taken considering the increased flow of commuters.

Central and Western Railways will operate 1,774 and 1,367 trains, respectively, on their suburban network starting October 28. This is the capacity at which the zonal railways operated before the Covid-19 outbreak in early 2020.

At present, the zonal railways run 1,702 and 1,304 suburban services, respectively, which is 95.70 per cent of the normal capacity.

Till now, only government employees and essential services staffers were permitted to travel by suburban trains, apart from fully-vaccinated citizens who have completed the 14-day waiting period after the second dose.

In recent years, many Google Maps users have encountered outdated information and misleading directions that result in detours and delays. In one such incident, a Google Maps error caused a man to miss his flight from Bengaluru to Mumbai. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), user Ashish Kacholia shared that Google Maps failed to accurately estimate the travel time to the airport, resulting in him missing his flight. He said that he had to travel from Bengaluru's HSR Layout to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), a distance of over 50 kilometres. He claimed that the app showed him a travel time of 1 hour and 45 minutes, but it took him three hours to reach the airport.

"Yesterday missed my flight from Bengaluru to Mumbai because journey took 3 hours instead of 1.45 as shown by Google maps. Deeply grateful to Mumbai administration  @mybmc for investing in infrastructure to keep traffic moving in maximum city. Life is relative," Mr Kacholia wrote.

Mr Kacholia shared the post just a day back. Since then, it has accumulated more than 243,000 views.

Reacting to the post, one user wrote, "Recently, Google predictions have become quite unreliable. Always ask a local if weather conditions are not good in any part of the city."

"Sir, blaming Bengaluru or Google Maps? Please give clarity," asked another to which Mr Kacholia said, "Obviously, Google Maps."

"I think Bengaluru is the only place, where you can't rely on the travel time shown on Google Maps. Rarely happened in Gurgaon (even though I used to commute from Gurgaon to Delhi every day)," said a third.

A fourth commented, "Google Maps has become unreliable in general - Showing wrong routes as well as traffic. Add Bengaluru to the above and the mix is lethal as you experienced."

"Aim to reach the airport 2 hours before take-off time at Bangalore. Add another 30 minutes if the travel slot is in the peak hour. Commute is the biggest productivity killer in this great city," expressed a fifth user.

Meanwhile, speaking of Bengaluru traffic, earlier this year, an entrepreneur suggested borrowing an idea from China to help residents deal with daily traffic snarls. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), user Paras Chopra shared a screenshot of a news article describing how, in Beijing, commuters stuck in traffic jams can call for a "rescue". The article explains that in Beijing, you can pay someone $60 to rescue you from traffic. "They pick you up on a motorbike and someone else drives your car to its destination," the article read.

Sharing the screenshot, Mr Chopra wrote, "Bangalore founders, drop that saas idea and build this instead". His post garnered mixed reactions from social media users.
