Our Top 10 Hunting Lodges in the American Backcountry

a rural hunting lodge in the backcountry of montana

This article about hunting lodges is brought to you by Morsel spork, whose spork  includes a spatula, a stirring spoon, a fork, a knife, and a tablespoon all in one. It’s the last spork you’ll ever need!

Hunting lodges have experienced a renewal in popularity of late, if not because of the activities offered there, then for the amenities and opportunities for outdoor exploration that continue to improve. Families interested in staying at a hunting lodge can expect horseback rides for the kids, swimming pools, and daily activities to keep the whole family entertained. Adults seeking some time away from the little ones can find at any lodge on this list a variety of ways to escape the day-to-day craziness, whether it be taking a guided fly fishing trip, going bird hunting on some of the best land in the country, or indulging in the high quality cuisine that’s offered across the board. Whether you’re visiting for company, solitude, or to reconnect with your wilder side, hunting lodges are no longer just for hunting, they’re for hiking, fishing, relaxing, and, above all, getting outside.

10 Hunting Lodges For Cabin Camping in the American Backcountry

While there are a few longtime staples on this list of our favorite hunting lodges, many of these American backcountry havens have revamped their offerings, from guided hunting and fishing excursions to ATV adventures to five-star cuisine and spa accommodations. It’s like glamping, only better.

1. Broken Arrow Lodge —Alder, MT

Located out of Alder, Montana, the Broken Arrow lodge sponsors guided trips for bow hunting, elk hunting, rifle hunting, and mountain lion hunting, all located in the expansive Montana backcountry. Visitors pay for guided trips between 3 – 5 days (4 – 6 nights), and the Broken Arrow Lodge provides luxurious backcountry accommodations, including wall tents, wood stoves, carpeted floors, and full bathroom and shower amenities.

There are few backcountry “camping” experiences that will match the Broken Arrow’s attention to detail and expertise in the field. Trips are available throughout the year, and vary depending on weather conditions and hunting restrictions for the area. For hunters who also wield a fly rod, the Broken Arrow Lodge offers guided fly fishing trips as well.

2. Grey Cliffs Ranch —near Bozeman, MT

Another Montana staple, this lodge is located in the cinema-famous Madison River Valley, most commonly known as the setting for the iconic film “ A River Runs Through It ”. With a variety of offerings, from bird hunting to fly fishing, this hunting lodge is tough to beat, as it combines the luxury of a well-established lodge with the excitement and ruggedness of the Montana wilderness. Located on over 5,200 acres of landscape, the opportunities for guests here abound, and guide-optional hunting means that visitors can take to the fields at their leisure. Not to mention the food!

3. Three Forks Ranch —Wyoming/Colorado Border

This Colorado hunting lodge offers over 50,000 acres of private hunting grounds, including large populations of deer, elk, and antelope. During the early fall, populations of elk have been known to grow in this region up to 6,000 head, solidifying its position as one of the premier hunting lodges in the Wyoming / Colorado region. Along with offering prime access to otherwise private land, guests at the Three Forks can enjoy the five-star amenities such as the pool, fine dining, and an array of spa services. Despite its location in the backcountry, this hunting lodge is no stranger to the comforts of luxury.

4. Flying B Ranch —near Kamiah, ID

Slightly more rustic than its luxurious counterparts, Flying B Ranch is tucked away in Lawyer’s Canyon in Northern Idaho, just outside of the little town of Kamiah. Flying B offers world-class hunting trips, including guides and services that have been endorsed by Orvis both as a Wingshooting Lodge of the Year and an official, Orvis-approved Fly-Fishing Lodge. With access to over 700,000 acres of Nez Pearce and Clearwater National Forest land, guests are given the chance to access some of the best backcountry in the world.

5. Harpole’s Heartland Lodge —near Nebo, IL

7. Libby Camps —Millinocket Lake, ME

One of the only east coast hunting lodges on our list, Libby Camps is set on the beautiful Millinocket Lake, home to hunters and anglers alike looking for their next big catch. The central lodge at the Libby is primarily suited for fly fishermen, though its hunting amenities are certainly nothing to shake a stick at. The lodge provides access and guided trips to the North Maine Woods, home to over 3.5 million (yes, million) acres of land and one of the largest grouse populations in the entire United States. In addition to that, visitors may also hunt black bears or moose, depending on the year, and Libby is a proud owner of records in both of those species. The amenities at Libby camps are slightly more rustic than the “luxury” backcountry hunting lodges on our list, offering small log cabins with wood-burning stoves, which surround the main lodge complete with its tall stone fireplace and group dining area.

8. Honey Brake —Larto, LA

As hunting lodges go, Honey Brake is world-class. Guests staying at Honey Brake have the opportunity to test their wingshooting skills in one of the largest flyway convergences in the country. Both the Central and Mississippi migratory patterns converge over Honey Brake, making it a wingshooter’s paradise. For those not interested in the birds, the Dewey Wills Wildlife Management Area, located just adjacent to the 20,000 acre hunting area, provide ample opportunities whitetail deer and wild boar hunting as well. Looking for the amenities? The 13,000 square-foot lodge looks over Larto Lake, and offers 5-star meals full of rich, southern seafood delights.

9. Deer Creek Lodge —Sebree, KY

A premier bird-hunting destination, Deer Creek Lodge is a haven for hunters and anglers alike located in Sebree, Kentucky. This southern backcountry lodge offers some of the best bird-hunting in the south, complete with guided trips and one-fee, no limit quail hunts that attract a large number of visitors each season. Other options include turkey hunts, pheasant hunts, and duck hunts. With three different lodges to choose from, the accommodations are perfect for groups of all sizes and preferences, including both the lakeside lodge and the renowned, Orvis-endorsed wingshooting lodge. Planning to leave hunting for the birds? The nearby Deer Creek Lake is a trophy bass fishing paradise, with 10-pounders that’ll regularly crush your topwaters, flies, and subsurface lures.

10. Joshua Creek —near Waring, TX

The 2018 Orvis Endorsed wingshooting lodge of the year, Joshua Creek is tucked away just 45 minutes north of San Antonio. With acres of land winding across the Guadalupe River and Joshua Creek, the hunting grounds here provide excellent access to a variety of terrain. Joshua Creek is unique in that it is one of a handful of hunting lodges to offer European-style pheasant shooting as well as quail, duck, and dove hunting on a seasonal basis. Apart from hunting, Joshua Creek offers several different cabins for larger parties and single guests to stay in, each of which features top-of-the-line amenities and rustic ranch decor.

The Mississippi Flyway

Five Oaks is in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway, which starts in central Canada and stretches to the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi Flyway is the name given to the route followed by ducks migrating from their breeding grounds in North America to their wintering grounds in the South. As the name suggests, the Mississippi Flyway follows the route of the Mississippi River in the United States – North America’s largest river system. Originating in northern Minnesota, the slow-flowing river travels southwards for a distance of 2,530 miles, cutting through, or forming a border for, the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana before emptying into the Mississippi River Delta at the Gulf of Mexico. In most years, Arkansas winters more mallards than any other place in North America, and a whole lot of them return year after year to Five Oaks.

Wild hogs are a pervasive problem in Texas and cause well over $100 million in damages to agricultural land each year. These invasive animals are not native to the state and therefore pose a problem to the native flora and fauna that reside naturally in the state of Texas. The past few decades their population has exploded, and they have become a major issue for farmers and ranchers throughout Texas.

Hog hunters can play a crucial role in controlling the wild hog population by hunting them. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department encourages hog hunting and has even made it legal to hunt them year-round. Some Texas counties even offer a bounty for each wild hog killed, as a way to incentivize hunters to help control the population.

Lodge options are provided based on # of people and availability

Shmelovka: the 3rd place to hunt in Moscow

By RuMert September 16, 2020 in Fossil Hunting Trips

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody!

Today I’ll show you yet another distinct fossil hunting location within the city limits. It’s situated in the south-east in the direct vicinity of the Moscow ring road (city and regional border). The outcrops are located on the banks of the shallow Shmelovka (Shmelyevka) river, effectively a small fordable creek.

My sites & reports

Link to comment

Share on other sites.

The location is rather depressive, attractive to crows and people with barbecue/alcohol/garbage dumping addictions. Most photos will probably contribute to that depressive feeling, but it’s mainly because they were taken last snowless winter

It looks different with snow and full of overgrown vegetation in summer, effectively a patch of wilderness

The fossil layers are numerous, in theory you can encounter everything from Oxfordian to Upper Tithonian. In practice, we are talking about mostly Panderi zone fossils , with the advantage you can gather them all year round, unlike Moskva river, which is only productive in winter. Unfortunately the place is naturally picked over and produces mostly belemnites and ammonite imprints.

Here you see black Jurassic clay at the cliff's bottom

The ammo looks nice, but it's only an imprint

As for me, the main point of interest was Upper Tithonian with a visible border between Subditus and Nodiger ammonite zones. When I looked around the place last winter, I found a small suitable outcrop. I visited the place a couple of times in winter and a couple of times recently, with the results I’ll be sharing here.

The outcrop:

Having found these 2 ammos (Craspedites aff. kachpuricus) just lying on the ground, I decided to examine it further

Working on the outcrop recently

The gray clay relates to Craspedites subditus ammonite zone, while the red one - to Craspedites nodiger. The red blocks below fell from the cave ceiling

That's how ammos are found in clay

Unfortunately they are mostly desintegrated and finding anything good-looking is exceptional

Even with a good imprint (on the right) the ammo itself is a pile of debris (on the left)

They are often "coalificated" leaving such 3D imprints (ammonite section below)

The place was full of slugs, so I had to take a pic of this modern mollusk guarding the fossil ones

As with other Upper Volgian ammos the green color is widely represented (ammonites: Craspedites sp., Garniericeras subclypeiforme)

But there's also golden ( Garniericeras: 1, 2, 4; Craspedites: 3)

And blue, everything turning whitish and silvery upon drying out

Belemnite preservation is peculiar: calcite is dissolved leaving only fragmacones.

Protoconch is visible here (0,3mm or so)

Bivalves are found as steinkerns only

There are also brachiopods akin to those found in Fili park (Rhynchonella sp.), but as steinkerns, worms and even very small crinoid stems (1 mm in diameter)

I guess that's all for now, thanks for reading!

I really enjoy these reports.

@RuMert  so awesome and informative, thanks so much for sharing this!

Nice report! You're lucky to have some productive sites so close to a major city!

I enjoyed reading that, the walk in to the dig is a really nice touch! Lots for a newcomer to learn there, thank you.

Moscow Boat Tour

  • Page active

Image

Description

See all the gems of historical and cultural center of the capital in short time and without traffic jams or tiresome walking.

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River boat trip, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours.

Highlights of the tour

  • St Basil’s Cathedral;
  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Deer Hunting Outfitters

When looking for a hunting outfitter , especially a whitetail deer hunting outfitter , you need to make sure you do your homework. There are so many Illinois outfitters and many are located in Pike County and West Central Illinois. New deer outfitters are popping up every year and whitetail hunters should make sure they have been in business at least 10 yrs. When hunting with an outfitter make sure you ask all the questions and if it sounds to good to be true it probably is.

Your stay with us is more than a whitetail hunt. It’s part of a strong hunting tradition that started back when Heartland’s owner, Gary Harpole, was a child. Each year, new traditions and memories are being created by our guests. The most cherished memories are not the game we harvested, but the memories created from time spent with family and friends. That is what hunting at Heartland Lodge is all about, creating legacy memories that you will always cherish. Read Gary’s Personal Story Here >>
