Infababy is a relatively new company, based in Ireland, that sells all of its baby kit exclusively online. It is fast becoming a premium name, vying for recognition alongside the likes of iCandy and Bugaboo. The multi-award winning Ultimo travel system is a bundle that includes carrycot, toddler seat and car seat, as well as accessories such as liners and raincovers.

With an RRP of £839.99, the Ultimo is available with either 3 or 4 wheels and pitches itself against the likes of the iCandy Peach , £999, or Bugaboo’s Cameleon, £675. However, the company regularly offers huge savings on its website, so you can get the Ultimo for significantly less, often at half price.

We tested whether its quality and functionality were also on par with more established brands.

Father-of-2, Luke, tested the Infababy Ultimo 3-Wheel 3-in-1 travel system with his 2-year-old daughter and 6-month-old son. He put it through its paces in carrycot, stroller and car seat modes, in varying situations from pavements and parks to grass and gravel.

What were your first impressions of the Infababy Ultimo 3-Wheel?

Premium, high-end and quality. From the packaging to the ease of putting this together, everything felt like it had been designed and engineered to really high standards.

The metals are light, plastics are strong and materials soft, supportive yet tough – and they’re stain resistant.

How is it the Infababy Ultimo different to the brand’s Primo travel system?

The main difference is that the Ultimo is built for all terrain whereas the Primo is more designed for city use. The Primo is also designed as a compact buggy, and our MFM reviewer said of the Primo that she was worried her child might grow out of it too soon. The Ultimo, in contrast, is very generous in size.

The Primo folds much smaller to dimensions of 28cm x 63cm x 57cm (with the seat attached), versus the Ultimo’s 34cm x 62cm x 95cm (chassis only), so they are aimed at very different markets.

Another difference is the use of eco-leather in the Ultimo finish, whereas the Primo features quilted linen and also offers the option of a bling gold chassis finish.

How does the Infababy Ultimo compare to other travel systems you have tried?

The Ultimo’s ease of use is its big feature. While other pushchairs might have fiddly harnesses, the Ultimo’s is simple and easy. The Ultimo also feels very high-end in terms of build quality, with chunky wheels that cope well with any surface, even off-road.

Some others – at a similar price range – are rickety and have wheels that would clog and get stuck if you even went on a bit of wet grass. This unit is reassuringly supportive, just what you need when you’ve got a million and one other things to think about.

What age is the Ultimo suitable for?

The Ultimo is suitable for newborns with the carrycot, and the toddler seat can take up to 22kg, which is the equivalent to an average 4 year old. The car seat can also be used from birth and has padding that can be removed as your child grows. It’s a Group 0+ carseat suitable up to 13kg. The pushchair is generous in size and feels like it would last for a number of years. It has got plenty of width, and the footrest folds down to allow for longer legs too.

Does it come with a carrycot?

The Ultimo comes with a carrycot that is suitable for newborns until 6 months (or until your baby is sitting up). The mattress is thick and soft, but the inner lining sits quite loosely, attached by two bits of velcro. This feels like it wastes a lot of the carrycot as it doesn’t go all the way to the edges.

Also the leg cover is fixed by elastic so is a bit of a faff if you want to remove it quickly – a zip fastening might have been better.

A handy feature is that the carrycot has support feet to help free standing and it is slightly banked to keep your baby's head raised to help with reflux.

Is it easy to assemble the Ultimo 3-Wheel?

This part is really straight forward. Initially the instructions look very wordy with small font and few pictures. But when you start building, it’s all very straight forward, you only need to clip together the wheels and the handle for the carrycot.

The carrycot is the longest build time as it requires the inner, the mattress and the cover – but even that only takes minutes. The whole process, from opening the box to having it all built, is literally 10 to 15 minutes.

Is the Infababy Ultimo 3-Wheel’s seat unit comfortable and spacious enough?

The main seat is big enough for the suggested 22kg or 4-year age limit, although you might have to remove the seat liner as your child grows. The lining is great for smaller children that are just upgrading to the seat. Another nice touch is a button at the top back of the seat that allows you to recline it with one hand very easily.

The bumper bar that goes over the child’s lap did feel a little snug. While this is good for safety and for your child to grab onto, it can make putting their legs in a little difficult.

How many recline positions are there on the seat?

The seat has 3 recline positions and is very easy to adjust one-handed with the release button at the back of the seat.

How is interacting with your child when in the Infababy Ultimo?

The hood has a peekaboo window that allows you to check in with your child without leaning over. It’s useful to check if they’ve got sun on them when you’re on the move, or to see whether they have dropped off for a nap.

What do you think of the hood?

It’s great that the hood has a peekaboo window, and it also provides really good cover when extended, almost totally covering a smaller child. The action of moving it is easy and feels solid, all moving smoothly, rather than in stages like on a Silver Cross, for example.

How do you fold the Infababy Ultimo 3-Wheel?

The fold system is pretty straight forward:

• Put on the brake.
• Remove the seat, carrycot or car seat using the side buttons. Or leave attached in the case of the seat.
• Pull the two levers just below the handle and push the whole unit forward into a fold.
• The lock engages automatically.

It’s super simple to do, even with the seat attached. In fact, leaving the seat on makes it easier to transport as the handle is there to help carry the whole unit.

How compact is the Ultimo when folded and unfolded?

The Ultimo certainly isn’t the smallest folding pushchair, as it’s a big unit to start with. Its folded dimensions (with the seat removed) are 62cm x 34cm x 95cm. So even when folded the frame is long. However, it does stand up when folded, allowing you to stash it in a cupboard easily.

Some other buggies with large wheels, like many iCandy models, are still wide when folded up due to the wheels. With the Ultimo, that slenderness is great, presuming you have enough depth or width in the boot of your car to fit that.

Does it fit in the boot of your car?

For most car boots this should fit if you place it in sideways. You’ll need to have an estate or a large SUV to be able to load the Ultimo in lengthwise and have some more room to the side.

If you have the seat still attached when folded down you will likely need to remove the parcel shelf in some cases to make sure you have enough height.

How lightweight is the Infababy Ultimo?

The aluminium frame is light, as are the air filled wheels , but the Ultimo is large so there is some heft here, and chassis and seat combined weigh 13kg. This is quite standard for a large travel system, but there are certainly lighter options out there, such as the Bugaboo Fox 2 (9.9kg). You can easily carry the Ultimo short distances and load it into the car without too much trouble. Just don’t expect to go far, as this doesn’t come with a carry handle so will mean you need to use grip strength and a bit of a lean to hold it.

This, again, is where that folded height could be an issue for anyone shorter who will have to raise their arms high to hold it off the ground when upright.

How easy is the Ultimo 3-Wheel to push and steer?

The 3-wheel design makes the Ultimo super simple to steer and push. From bumping up kerbs to zipping round on the spot in tight supermarkets, this can do it all easily. That front wheel is really, really well greased so it’ll flip and roll to suit any terrain without you putting in much effort at all.

What do you think of the wheels?

The wheels are fantastic. They’re large enough to eat up any surface and sturdy enough, despite being air-filled, to take a beating. They’re also slim, so you don’t feel they’re adding width when you’re trying to squeeze down a tight spot in a restaurant or in a shopping aisle.

The wheels are also simple enough to be cleared easily with a blast of the hose, if they get muddy. Thanks to not having many small grooves they don’t collect much dirt anyway.

How does the Infababy Ultimo ride on smooth surfaces?

Smooth is the best word to describe the way this system rolls along, or we should probably say glides along. It makes pushing feel effortless, even when loaded up with a lot of weight.

However, even though I found it a dream to push, other MFM testers struggled with the handling of it, and weren’t comfortable with going off road.

How does it ride on challenging surfaces?

Once again those three large air-filled wheels make all-terrain a doddle. We struggled to find a situation where the way this glides along felt anything but easy. Perhaps if you somehow found yourself in a boggy field then that single front wheel could dig in and get you stuck. But even then it would have to be some really muddy terrain that no normal buggy is really made for anyway.

Buyers from Infababy’s online store all agree that this is a very easy-to-push buggy, with the Ultimo consistently getting a 5-star rating.

Does the Infababy Ultimo’s frame feel durable?

On first look, you’d be hard pressed to see the difference between the Ultimo’s frame and an iCandy model that’s more than double the price. This is a really strong frame made from sturdy yet light aluminum. Its chunky build makes it easy to hold and transport, while the brushed metal finish on the model I tested looks great too.

There’s very little flexibility and give in that frame, so when you push you know all your strength is going to use in the forward motion and not being wasted in the flex of a frame that has give in it.

What do you think of the handlebar?

The handlebar is just the right thickness and has a faux leather finish and just enough paddling to add comfort – while it remains solid enough to be very functional. Pressing the two end buttons allows you to angle the handle in a way that folds under, meaning it changes height drastically but without affecting the frame at all. This allows you to get close or further away as well as making height changes.

How user-friendly are the brakes on the Ultimo?

The brake is a single flip pedal to the right of the bottom bar. It’s a nice big and chunky plastic unit that can be pressed in shoes, flip flops or even barefoot. Once the brake is on there’s little movement, which is reassuring.

The only downside is that the brake pedal is a little close to the top bar, so sometimes you need to angle your foot in to push it down without getting your foot stuck. If you’re wearing boots this can be a bit of a faff. Well, we say faff, it just means remembering to angle your foot a bit.

Do you like the Infababy Ultimo’s basket?

The basket is brilliant. It’s massive, it’s deep and it’s easily accessible from the back. It’s very tricky to access it from the front unfortunately, as the leg rest is in the way. The basket accessibility scored quite badly with our MFM Awards judges this year, as they found it nigh on impossible to access with the carrycot in place.

The bottom of the basket is flat and solid, while the sides and top are made of a mesh material so you can see what’s where. There’s a handy zip pocket on the back to let you access the inner basket without having to remove the lid – great for quick access to snacks, wipes or your phone.

What did you think of the car seat included in the package?

Considering this is part of an affordable package, the car seat is impressive. It has lots of inner layers making it super comfy for a newborn but large enough for your child as it grows. That said, once the padding comes out, the seat itself is quite hard – although no harder than an equivalent from other leading brands.

The carry handle is chunky and strong with an easy adjuster button on the top. The whole unit is very light, making it easy to carry, and the handle is long enough to leave your baby with lots of forward facing space. The quick release harness is also great and the unit as a whole feels strong and secure.

Can the Infababy Ultimo be used as a travel system with other car seats?

The car seat can be used with the Infababy ULTIMO Isofix Base (RRP £169.99), which can be bought as an optional extra. But you can’t use it with any other car seat brands.

Do you like the style of the Ultimo 3-Wheel?

This is an undeniably good-looking system that goes for a modern finish, with the chrome and chunky bars. I tested the ‘Black Beauty’ model, which is relatively good at staying clean and also, being black, goes with everything. You can also get the Ultimo in Champagne Supernova or Space Grey.

That 3-wheel design gives it a bit of a sporty look, while the high handle position makes it feel large and strong.

What would you have wanted to know before you purchased the Infababy Ultimo 3-Wheel?

I think the fact that the carrycot top doesn’t have a zip would have been nice to know. Also the fact that the wheels are air filled and therefore might require pumping up sometimes. On the plus side knowing that you can fold this down, with the buggy seat still attached is great.

What was your favourite feature of the Ultimo?

The best feature has got to be that ability to fold the entire buggy and seat down while still attached. This gets it compact enough to fit in the car boot, while it’s still light enough to carry if needs be. Folding down and popping up is so simple that it can be done quickly with no hassle at all. This feature makes this an ideal car boot buggy that doesn’t compromise on size, sturdiness or looks.

Travel systems typically work the same way their separate parts work normally. The stroller frame will usually fold up or collapse for easy carrying and storage, and the car seat will fit into your vehicle. However, these 2 parts will snap together as well, turning the stroller into a carriage.

What is the difference between a travel system and a stroller?

The biggest difference between a stroller and a travel system is the fact that a stroller is just 1 tool while a travel system is 2, sometimes 3 tools, all in 1. Travel systems include a stroller, but they also have a car seat and, sometimes, a baby carrier, too.

How long does a travel system last?

Since travel systems are typically multiple-in-1 tools made up of a stroller, car seat, and sometimes even a baby carrier, they can last a varying amount of time. As your child grows, they’ll eventually be too big for the car seat and carrier. However, the stroller may last through toddlerhood.

Moscow Public Transportation

The public transportation system in Moscow is moderately accessible, much to the surprise of many. Use of this transportation network will require some planning for disabled travelers, especially those in wheelchairs. An ability to understand and recognize the Cyrillic alphabet will also make its use much easier for travelers of all abilities. The city’s subway system is not accessible to wheelchairs. The vast majority of city buses and trolley buses offer step-free access.

Metro Subway

The Moscow Metro Subway is spread across 12 lines and serves 196 stations throughout the city. While some stations have recently had elevators installed, the system cannot be considered wheelchair accessible. Large gaps of up to 6 inches exist between the subway train and station platforms. Trains are often not level with the platform and require a step up of a similar distance.

Stations without elevators require travelers to ascend or descend long flights of stairs. I strongly recommend that you use the accessible city bus network and avoid the subway.

City Bus and Trolleybus System

Moscow is served by an increasingly modern city bus system with hundreds of routes/lines. Every major city street is served by at least one bus line. Busses are numbered and lettered with route information. The network consists of normal, gas-powered city buses and the largest electricity-powered trolleybus system in the world.

The majority of city buses and trolleybuses now have lowered floors and are wheelchair accessible. The door at the center of the bus is equipped with a manual ramp which the bus operator will extend for wheelchair users. These ramps can be quite steep, but the bus operator can assist with pushing the wheelchair up the ramp. Wheelchair accessible buses are equipped with a securement space for wheelchairs with tie downs/straps and a seatbelt. Priority reserved seating is available for seniors and persons with disabilities.

All wheelchair accessible buses are marked with the international symbol of access (the wheelchair icon) at the center door or on the front of the vehicle. Wheelchair entry is possible only through the center door, where the retractable or fold out ramp is located. Wheelchair travelers ride the city bus and trolleybus free of charge. You should flag down the approaching bus if wish to ride, so that the operator can maneuver the bus close to the curb for ramp deployment.

On-street rail trams

The City of Moscow is served by 44 on street tram lines, which run on recessed rails and are powered by electricity. All trams require riders to climb several steps in order to access the passenger cabin. There are no implements which make wheelchair access possible. Disabled travelers should plan to avoid any routes which require the use of a tram. City buses adequately serve all parts of the city in which the trams operate.

City Sightseeing Moscow Hop-on/off Tour Bus

Although it is not managed by the city, the City Sightseeing Moscow tour bus travels to all of the major sights in Moscow and allows patrons to hop-on and hop-off at nearly 40 stops. The bus stops at or near all of the sights I have reviewed on this website. The next bus is available 30-40 minutes after the one before and the entire route circle takes 60 minutes to complete. Buses are wheelchair accessible, with fold-out ramps at the rear doors. One dedicated wheelchair space is available on each bus.

Passengers are provided with a set of headphones which can be plugged in to the at-seat ports. An audio guide is available in multiple languages, including English. Tickets for adults, good for 24 hours from the time of purchase, are available for 700 RUB. They can be purchased online with credit card, or onboard the bus with cash.  Tickets are provided free of charge to wheelchair users and for other persons with proof of disability. The Moscow Metro: From Public Transport to Social Icon

Even if you’ve seen pictures, you’re not prepared for the Moscow Metro System. For visitors, one of the great surprises of this historical city is discovering the beauty and cleanliness of its underground palaces. It’s worth a few hours in the afternoon or late evening (avoid rush hour 4-7) to ride around and see the amazing interiors of this famous system. You’ll see, especially with the older stations (center and ring stations) that an immense amount of thought and creativity went into making each station unique, with a specific theme and elaborate artwork.

The Museum of the Moscow Metro

For those that really want to get to know the Moscow Metro, it has its own museum!

The Public Museum of the Moscow Metro is an immersive look into the history, engineering, and continuity of the Moscow Metro system. It is open every day from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and located in the second-level of the modern Vystavochnaya Station, near the towering Moscow City skyscraper complex in central Moscow.

The sleek, functional architecture of the small museum houses artifacts and displays that commemorate not only the metro’s construction, engineering, and design, but also its political and cultural significance and decades-long service to Moscow’s citizens, from everyday transportation to wartime shelter.

This free, public museum originally opened at the Moscow Sportivnaya station in 1967. It moved to its current location in 2016.

Designed by Olga Farstova, Aleksandr Vigdorov, and Leonid Borzenkov, the long, arched gallery of the Vysavochnaya Station is itself an introduction to the museum’s content. Although a futuristic departure from the often lavish, classical interiors of the Moscow Metro’s early stations and the functional pragmatic design of its later Soviet stations, Vystavochnaya’s daring modern aesthetic educates visitors on the importance of both design and technological progression to the identity of the Moscow underground.

Although not translated to English, the exhibits themselves chronicle the nearly ninety years of the Moscow’s metro history, starting with the opening in 1935 under the Stalin regime. Exhibits include older metro signs, transport employee uniforms, actual metro engines, photographs, documents, and other object collections. Together, they paint a picture of the infrastructure as woven into the cultural and municipal life of Moscow as a monument to and for the people.

The museum offers screenings of films in which the Moscow Metro is featured. There are also Subway Club meetings for Moscow youth which offer quests and other activities. The museum space is additionally one of vocational education and training, with a full-size metro simulator in which visitors can how learn how to pilot a train (available to visitors on Sundays from noon to 6:00 PM or by appointment). It’s attached to a fullsize metro car, just to make it seem a bit more lifelike. This merges with the functions of the Vocational Center, also operated by the Metro, in the Vystavochnaya Station lobby.

Professional guides are also available from the facility if reserved ahead of time.

About 20 meters away from the museum there is a metro souvenir store , which sells uniquely decorated and shaped troikas (the already iconic metro electronic pass) as well as stationery, shirts, and other cool stuff to take home with out.

This mix of history, culture, engineering, and functionality creates a welcoming but awe-inspiring introduction to the metro for visitors. Run by the Moscow Metro, which in turn is run by the Moscow city government and the Russian State, it should not be surprising that this discursive meld becomes a celebration of Russian ingenuity. The metro is presented as a marvel in its construction and beauty and in the heroism of those who designed and built it. However, given the undeniable efficiency and general splendor of the metro, the museum is convincing in its arguments that these grand feats of engineering have achieved much larger goals of public service.

Fun Facts about the Moscow Metro

• The original excavation revealed the Moscow Metro would be very difficult to build, because of the soft makeup of the soil and the presence of underground water. Just in one stretch, (between Sokolniki and Okhoty Ryad) there were four underground rivers. This is one reason why the stations are very deep.

Though it had been planned and worked on since 1902, the vast majority of excavating, tunneling, concreting, and track laying was accomplished in a very concentrated amount of time, between 1933-1935.

• The Moscow Metro officially employed a peak of 75,000 people in 1934, though it is thought that some of the labor force was augmented with prison labor. Almost all the excavation was done with hand tools.
• During WWII the stations of the metro were sometimes used as an underground shelter. During the cold war, some areas were fitted with life-sustaining systems to be used as a nuclear bomb shelters.
• It is now a more-or-less open secret that there is another, much smaller metro line, metro 2, which was built in case of emergency, to evacuate key military personnel and some civilians. Entrances to this system are located under Moscow State University, the Russian State Library, the Kremlin, and other important state buildings.
• Average speed of trains along the metro is about 42 km/hr (about 29 mph)
• The deepest Moscow Metro station and longest escalator are both located at Park Pobedy on the Blue Line. It is located 276 feet below the surface.
• The Moscow Metro was exalted as a symbol of Socialism, and the Soviet Man was exalted within it. Riders were encouraged to dress nicely, not use foul language, and to behave themselves like upstanding citizens.
• There are no garbage bins on the platforms where the trains go by. They were removed as possible safety threats.
• It is rare to see people eating or drinking in the Metro. Russians will generally avoid eating in enclosed public spaces which are not intended for eating as it is believed to be unsanitary.

Question: Why are the Moscow Metro Doors so Heavy?

The size, thickness, and most importantly, the weight of the metro entrance doors have not changed for more than half a century. During that time, Muscovites have learned to use their elbows as battering rams and gotten used to ducking and dodging the hundreds of pounds of metal and glass that come whistling past them. A few have even taught themselves to hold the metro doors for other passengers. But all this time, we continue to wonder: “why are the doors so heavy?” To find the following answer, have the Metro management authorize the answer, and then send it to us by fax, took officials at the Moscow Metro a full month.

Answer from the Moscow Metro Administration:

The metro has seen three types of doors: First, there was wood – the old model. Then, in the 1960s, doors made of glass and metal appeared. In 2007, we began installing doors made of stainless steel.

The heaviest of these doors are the wooden ones; they weigh around 110 kilograms while the glass doors weigh only 80 kilograms. The designers followed certain standards, which prescribed requirements for strength, durability, and so on. However, about the weight of the door panel, there simply were no requirements. Therefore, the designers did not even think about it. In the metro, there are door-making workshops, but we only make non-standard models there, in case doors larger than the regular size are needed. Most of the doors are made by third-party contractors, chosen by tender.

Accidents with the doors, unfortunately, happen, but not too often. They are often heavily reported in the media. By the way, I hasten to remind everyone, that metro is a form of transportation service that carries an increased chance of risk. Even the government has acknowledged this. So, when using the metro, be especially careful. Statistics show that all accidents and injuries in the metro occur because passengers themselves violate the basic rules of safety.

Question: Why do the Escalator and Handrails Move at Different Speeds?

In the Moscow Metro, the escalator’s handrails move a little faster or a little slower than the escalator. There is a theory about this: this causes passengers to have to occasionally adjust their grip, and thus does not give the chance for overly tired passengers to fall asleep. The Kyiv edition of the village has found out whether or not this is a fact. The Moscow and Kyiv metros and escalators were built with the same technology, so the answer from Kyiv should hold true for Moscow.

Answer from Nikolai Andrushchik, Head of the Escalator Service:

The different speeds are related to the escalator’s construction. The track consists of steps on a carrier chain, which moves via gears and an electric motor. The handrails move via the rotation of the drive unit. Over time, the drive unit wears out, and its diameter decreases. As a consequence, handrails begin to move at a different rate, but the speeds should not differ by more than 2%. We monitor this. A slight speed difference is not a problem and is not dangerous.

The different speeds serve no purpose. Occasionally, we simply laugh about the myth that the purpose is so that passengers do not sleep on the escalator, because in reality this would do little to help.

The Moscow Ring Railway

The Moscow Ring railway is considered a seperate, yet integrated part of the Moscow Metro system. It is right now partly functional, with more stations being developed. Built in the beginning of the twentieth century, but was used originally to transport only cargo. It has now been updated to additionally support public transport in Moscow. The following below was translated from The Village before the railway opened. It has been additionally updated with some new information as of 2021.

The Moscow Ring Railway should unify Moscow’s various transport systems. It should be integrated with the Moscow Metro, giving passengers yet another circle line to use to transfer between lines and thus clearing congestion in the center of the metro.  The Moscow Ring Railway and the Moscow Metro will be connected in one system with one ticket. Transferring from one to the other will be free.

When the Moscow Ring Railway was being built, there was not even talk about the subway. Where the Ring was built was entirely industrial, so there was no need to build a subway there. Because of this, nowhere are the railway stations and subway stations close to each other. If subway stations are near the railway, this is just a coincidence. Where it is possible, we will move the railway terminals closer to the stations. We have designed it so that the distance between the two is between 275-325 yards. The longest distance to walk between the two will be 875 yards.

In some areas, the Moscow Ring Railway overlaps the proposed second circle line of the Moscow Metro, currently under construction. However, the Moscow Ring Railway is in the shape of an egg pointed north, and the subway ring will be like an egg pointed south. Moreover, on this map the distance between the two rings looks not very big, but in reality the distance is several kilometers.

The Moscow Ring Railway will connect  with the commuter trains which travel to Moscow’s suburbs and which spoke out from the city center in a wheel formation. People traveling from Moscow to the suburbs won’t need to travel to the city center to connect to their destination subway line. The Moscow Ring Railway will also connect all the commuter trains lines in a ring. It is still unclear if the commuter trains will also be combined with single-ticket system for the subway and ring railway.

Development of the Moscow Ring Railway would have been impossible without the development of the commuter trains. A decision about the trains’ timetable was made not long ago, to emphasize reducing the intervals between train arrival times and the number of service breaks for trains traveling in every direction. (Now, passengers and freight can travel on the same rails at the same time.) In light of this, launching the Moscow Ring Railway is all the more important.

As with the subway, we will move some Ring railway stations so that transfers between commuter trains will be more convenient. After the addition of the timetable and launch of the Ring, our system will be similar to Berlin’s mass transit system.

The Moscow Ring Railway runs through largely industrial areas of Moscow, located between the center and outer suburbs. With the appearance of this major new transport route, this now under-used area will receive a boost in development.

Timur Bashkaev : “Developing this industrial area is of course not a task of the Moscow Ring Railway. We do not do development work; we will only do the first step—bringing in a modern transportation system. But, we hope that a revitalization of this area will follow, as it is currently in a terribly depressing state.

The Moscow Ring Railway was originally two railway tracks, both used for transporting cargo. A third track has been added around the entire ring. One track is used for cargo transportation to meet the needs of industries that still operate there and the two others will be used exclusively for passengers. The train moves with minimal intervals, which will run as low as five-minutes at rush hour.

New routes for aboveground public transportation have been developed to make it easier to reach the ring stations. Next to every transportation hub, there will be parking lots and bus hubs.

The Moscow Ring Railway was also electrified to allow the old diesel trains to be replaced with modern new electric trains.

Alexei Zotov: “Trains should be functionally similar to the subway trains: passengers should be able to embark and disembark in not more than 30 seconds. Otherwise, it may take up to 2.45 hours to travel the ring, and we foresee the entire route taking 45 minutes.

The interior of the wagons will be similar to those on the subway. Trains will be fitted to carry goods and bicycles. Another important requirement is the ability to walk between the wagons. We have prepared the specifications and have received several offers from foreign and Russian companies, but still have not chosen a contractor to construct the wagons.”

Cultural Legacy

Famous architects designed and constructed the majority of stations in the 20th Century – before the Moscow Ring Railway was formed. Many of these buildings still stand, largely because the Moscow Ring Railway was closed off from ordinary people and these stations were not of interest to investors. Now, cultural heritage experts are studying these stations and establishing conservation zones for each.

We plan to use the stations within the new project, but they are very diverse. The majority has been preserved very well but do not fit modern transportation needs. However, we hope that they can find some use.  It would be awesome to enjoy these old buildings while riding the trains. There are also old warehouses and small buildings where station workers lived. In general, the territory of the Moscow Ring Railway is currently a very curious scene. For the most part, they are abandoned or surrounded by factories and industrial plants, but in some places, you can observe what a typical Moscow suburb looked like at the beginning of the 20 th century.

Alexei Zotov: “Part of the historical buildings will be used for administrative needs. But a large part of them passengers will never see. In many places, the platforms will have to be moved, and nobody will transfer the buildings, of course. As requested by local residents, we will also have to install noise-barriers virtually the entire length of the railway which will also hide the stations from sight.”

Here is a quick look at the seasons so you can decide when to visit Moscow!

The summer months (June-August) are a great time to travel to Moscow to take advantage of the enjoyable mild temperatures. This is considered peak travel season. Bear in mind that hotel prices rise along with the temperatures!

If you’re planning a trip to Moscow during fall (September-November) try to plan for early fall. This way the temperatures will still be pleasant and winter won’t be threatening.

An important aspect of planning any trip is figuring out the transportation situation. You’re probably wondering how you’re going to get to all of your Moscow points of interest right? Luckily, this sprawling city has an excellent network of public transportation that will make traveling a breeze!

The underground metro system is the quickest and most efficient way to travel around Moscow. Most visitors rely exclusively on this super-efficient transportation system, which allows you to get to pretty much anywhere in the city! It’s also a great option if you’re planning a Moscow itinerary during the colder months, as you’ll be sheltered from the snow and freezing temperatures!

If you prefer above-ground transportation, buses, trams, and trolleybuses, run throughout the city and provide a rather comfortable alternative to the metro.

Moscow’s metro, buses, trams, and trolleybuses are all accessible with a ‘Troika’ card. This card can be topped up with any sum of money at a metro cash desk. The ticket is simple, convenient, and even refundable upon return to a cashier!

No matter which method you choose, you’ll never find yourself without an easy means of getting from point A to point B!

The Red Square is Moscow’s historic fortress and the center of the Russian government. The origins of the square date back to the late 15th century, when Ivan the Great decided to expand the Kremlin to reflect Moscow’s growing power and prestige!

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic! 

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

• Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
• Cost: USD $15.00
• Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

• Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
• Cost: Free!
• Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

• Why it’s awesome: A dazzling designed cathedral that showcases Russia’s unique architecture. This cathedral is one of the most recognizable symbols of the country!

Located in the Red Square, the ornate 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral is probably the building you picture when you think of Moscow’s unique architecture. Its colorful onion-shaped domes tower over the Moscow skyline!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Day 1 / Stop 5 – GUM Department Store

• Why it’s awesome: This is Russia’s most famous shopping mall! It’s designed with elegant and opulent architecture and provides a real sense of nostalgia!
• Cost: Free to enter
• Food nearby: Stolovaya 57 is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a variety of inexpensive Russian cuisine menu items including soups, salads, meat dishes, and desserts. It’s also located inside the GUM department store, making it very easily accessible when you’re shopping!

The enormous GUM Department Store is located within the historic Red Square. It has a whimsical enchantment to it that sets it apart from your typical department store.

A massive domed glass ceiling lines the top of the building and fills the interior with natural sunlight. There are live plants and flowers placed throughout the mall that give the shopping complex a lively and cheerful feel! A playful fountain sits in the center, further adding to the malls inviting a sense of wonder and amusement!

The GUM department store opened on December 2, 1893. Today, it includes local and luxury stores, including Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more! There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and even a movie theater inside!

For a special treat, head into Gastronom 1. This 1950s-style shop sells gourmet food items, like wine, freshly-baked pastries, cheese, Russian chocolate, and of course, vodka! Also, be on the lookout for a bicycle pedaling ice cream truck with an employing selling ice cream!

The ambiance is simply amazing, a trip to this idyllic shopping mall is an absolute must on any Moscow itinerary!

Insider Tip: Make sure to carry some small change on you in case you need to use the restroom, you’ll need to pay 50 rubles – or about USD $0.80 to use the bathroom in GUM.

On your 2 day itinerary in Moscow, you’ll have a chance to use the city’s excellent public transportation service! You’ll explore a few more of Moscow’s historic highlight as well as some modern attractions. These sites are a little more spread out, but still very easily accessible thanks to the metro!

Day 2 / Stop 1 – Novodevichy Convent

• Why it’s awesome: The Novodevichy Convent is rich in imperial Russian history and contains some of Russia’s best examples of classical architecture!

The Novodevichy Convent is the best-known and most popular cloister of Moscow. The convent complex is contained within high walls, and there are many attractions this site is known for! 

The six-pillared five-domed Smolensk Cathedral is the main attraction. It was built to resemble the Kremlin’s Assumption Cathedral and its facade boasts beautiful snowy white walls and a pristine golden onion dome as its centerpiece. It’s the oldest structure in the convent, built from 1524 -1525, and is situated in the center of the complex between the two entrance gates.

There are other churches inside the convent as well, all dating back from many centuries past. The convent is filled with an abundance of 16th and 17th-century religious artworks, including numerous large and extravagant frescos!

Just outside the convent’s grounds lies the Novodevichy Cemetery. Here, you can visit the graves of famous Russians, including esteemed authors, composers, and politicians. Probably the most intriguing gravestone belongs to Russian politician Nikita Khruschev!

The Novodevichy Convent is located near the Moscow River and offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The convent remains remarkably well-preserved and is an outstanding example of Moscow Baroque architecture! 

Insider Tip: To enter the cathedrals inside the complex, women are advised to cover their heads and shoulders, while men should wear long pants.

Day 2 / Stop 2 – Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure

• Why it’s awesome: A large amusement area in the heart of the city offering many attractions!

• Food nearby: Check out Mepkato, located inside Gorky Central Park for a casual meal in a cozy setting. There are indoor and outdoor seating options and the restaurant is child-friendly!

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure is a large green space in the heart of Moscow. The park opened in 1928, and it stretches along the scenic embankment of the Moskva River. It covers an area of 300-acres and offers a lovely contrast from the compact city center.

You’ll find all sorts of wonderful attractions, from boat rides to bike rentals to tennis courts and ping-pong tables, and much more! there are an open-air cinema and festive events and concerts scheduled in the summer months.  A wide selection of free fitness classes is also offered on a regular basis, including jogging, roller skating, and dancing!

Although many of the options you’ll find here are more suited for outdoor leisure during the summer, you’ll also a selection of winter attractions, including one of Europe’s largest ice rinks for ice-skating!

If you’re trying to decide what to do in Moscow with kids, the park also offers several venues designed specifically for kids. Check out the year-round Green School which offers hands-on classes in gardening and art! You can also feed the squirrels and birds at the Golitsinsky Ponds!

The park is very well maintained and kept clean and the entrance is free of charge, although most individual attractions cost money. There is also Wi-Fi available throughout the park.

With so many attractions, you could easily spend all day here! If you’re only planning a 2 day itinerary in Moscow, make sure to plan your time accordingly and map out all the areas you want to see beforehand!

Day 2 / Stop 3 – The State Tretyakov Gallery

• Why it’s awesome: The gallery’s collection consists entirely of Russian art made by Russian artists!
• Food nearby : Brothers Tretyakovs is located right across the street from the gallery. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric restaurant serving top quality food and drinks!

The State Tretyakov Gallery was founded in 1856 by influential merchant and collector Pavel Tretyakov.  The gallery is a national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the most important museums in Russia!

It houses the world’s best collection of Russian art and contains more than 130, 000 paintings, sculptures, and graphics! These works have been created throughout the centuries by generations of Russia’s most talented artists!

The exhibits range from mysterious 12th-century images to politically charged canvases. The collection is rich and revealing and offers great insight into the history and attitudes of this long-suffering yet inspired people!

All pictures are also labeled in English. If you plan to take your time and see everything inside the museum it will take a good 3-4 hours, so make sure to plan your Moscow trip itinerary accordingly! This gallery is a must-see stop for art lovers, or anyone wanting to explore the local culture and history of Russia in a creative and insightful manner!

Day 2 / Stop 4 – All-Russian Exhibition Center

• Why it’s awesome: This large exhibition center showcases the achievements of the Soviet Union in several different spheres. 
• Food nearby: Varenichnaya No. 1 serves authentic and homestyle Russian cuisine in an intimate and casual setting.

The All-Russian Exhibition Center is a massive park that presents the glory of the Soviet era! It pays homage to the achievements of Soviet Russia with its many different sites found on the property.

The center was officially opened in 1939 to exhibit the achievements of the Soviet Union. It’s a huge complex of buildings and the largest exhibition center in Moscow. There are several exhibition halls dedicated to different achievements and every year there are more than one hundred and fifty specialized exhibitions!

The Peoples Friendship Fountain was constructed in 1954 and is a highlight of the park. The stunning gold fountain features 16 gilded statues of girls, each representing the former Soviet Union republics. 

The Stone Flower Fountain was also built in 1954 and is worth checking out. The centerpiece of this large fountain is a flower carved from stones from the Ural Mountains! Along the side of the fountain are various bronze sculptures.

You will find many people zipping around on rollerblades and bicycles across the large area that the venue covers. It’s also home to amusement rides and carousels, making it the perfect place to stop with kids on your Moscow itinerary! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to explore all the areas that interest you!

Day 2 / Stop 5 – Bolshoi Theater

• Why it’s awesome: The Bolshoi Theater is a historic venue that hosts world-class ballet and opera performances!

• Food nearby: Head to the Russian restaurant, Bolshoi for high-quality food and drinks and excellent service!

The Bolshoi Theater is among the oldest and most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world! It also boasts the world’s biggest ballet company, with more than 200 dancers!

The theater has been rebuilt and renovated several times during its long history. In 2011 it finished its most recent renovation after an extensive six-year restoration that started in 2005. The renovation included an improvement in acoustics and the restoration of the original Imperial decor.

The Bolshoi Theater has put on many of the world’s most famous ballet acts! Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered at the theater in 1877 and other notable performances of the Bolshoi repertoire include Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker!

Today, when you visit the theater, you can expect a magical performance from skilled singers, dancers, and musicians with the highest level of technique!

If you don’t have time to see a show, the theater also provides guided tours on select days of the week. Tours are given in both Russian and English and will provide visitors with a more intimate look at the different areas of the theater!

The stage of this iconic Russian theater has seen many outstanding performances. If you’re a fan of the performing arts, the Bolshoi Theater is one of the greatest and oldest ballet and opera companies in the world, making it a must-see attraction on your Moscow itinerary!

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

• A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
• Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
• The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

• Television and radio tower in Moscow
• Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
• Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

• The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
• Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
• Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

• Closed on Mondays
• Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
• The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy! 

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
