Liturgy is a Brooklyn-based, self-styled “Transcendental Black Metal” band whose yearning, energetic music exists in an uncanny space between avant rock, black metal, fine art and shamanic ritual. Led by songwriter and conceptual architect Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, who is joined by guitarist Bernard Gann, bassist Tyler Dusenbury and drummer Greg Fox, the band exists as a 21st century total work of art (gesamtkunstwerk): activating divine potencies by means of music and culture even as it underscores the contradictions inherent in such a project during the internet era. Their third full length, The Ark Work, is a quantum leap forward, a radical change in sound that paradoxically sounds more like Liturgy than ever.

The album hums and churns with Hunt-Hendrix’s inventive arrangements - drenched with glockenspiels, bagpipes, strings, ritual chanting, and MIDI horns. It supplements its metal energy with motifs from unlikely, disparate genres; cross-fertilizing hardstyle beats, occult-oriented rap, and the glitched re-sampling of IDM and with structures from Medieval sacred music, Romantic classical music, and minimalism. The result is a rich, seething cyber-fantasia that is improbably listenable, conveying the disarming, authentic emotion that is Liturgy’s hallmark - a blend of startling invention, high caliber musicianship, raw energy, and profound, cosmic sadness.

The Interrupters

Liturgy

Liturgy is the project of Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, whose yearning, energetic “transcendental black metal” exists in the space between metal, art music and sacred ritual. Its current lineup features Mario Miron (guitar), Tia Vincent-Clark (bass) and Leo Didkovsky (drums).

Celebrated for their fusion of sincere emotion, compositional complexity, stylistic innovation and intense live energy, the band is simultaneously a medium and platform for drama and theology. It was founded in the context of Brooklyn DIY as a solo project by Hunt-Hendrix in 2005 while she was studying philosophy and classical composition at Columbia. After expanding to a quartet they made waves globally with their 2011 sophomore album Aesthethica for introducing the style of Scandinavian black metal into the world of experimental art rock. Their ambitious 2015 album The Ark Work was controversial for its incorporation of IDM and trap production into their musical language. In fall 2019 released their highly acclaimed fourth studio album H.A.Q.Q., which is tied to an ongoing philosophical YouTube lecture series. Their fifth studio album Origin of the Alimonies, an opera composed alongside a film created by Hunt-Hendrix, was released in November 2020.

Liturgy transcends the traditional parameters of what constitutes a rock band. Founded by Ravenna Hunt- Hendrix , Liturgy is a part of a shared discipline of composition, art, and philosophy that thrives on exploring the spaces between. As an ever-evolving practice Hunt-Hendrix has incorporated elements of black metal, art rock, opera, and trap production into the musical language of Liturgy while engaging with transcendental, theological and eschatological theory through lectures series’ and art installations. A profound sense of yearning and emotional depth weaves through the Liturgy’s dense layers and anchors the project’s increasingly complex and innovative work. New album  93696 is the purest synthesis of the diversity of Liturgy, a sprawling and monumental double album exploring religion, cosmic love, the feminine, and metamorphosis while manifesting the ecstatic with breathtaking grandeur. 93696 is a number derived from the religions of Christianity and Thelema, a numerological representation of heaven, or a new eon for civilization. Hunt-Hendrix composed the album as an exploration of eschatological possibility divided by the four “laws” that govern her own interpretation of heaven, “Haelegen”: Sovereignty, Hierarchy, Emancipation, and Individuation. These laws constitute the four movements of 93696 which act as dramas all their own within the framework of the record. Throughout the movements Hunt- Hendrix invokes the album’s myriad of personal and conceptual themes through the ensemble’s sheer force of sound, her will and intent blossoming from each bombarding gale. Hunt-Hendrix’s keening voice sows passionate crescendos and imagist poetry into the elaborate arrangements. The meticulously crafted and nuanced compositions flex and stretch dexterously, bounding with an incalculable momentum that contorts and stutters at lightning speed. Hunt-Hendrix notes on the album’s recording process: “We recorded it to tape in a much more live way than usual, aiming to make it sound more punk-meets-classical than metal, which is the usual recording style reference for us.” Liturgy’s signature use of rhythmic complexity and repetition are exponentially amplified to maximalist proportions on 93696 . Along with guitarist Mario Miron , bassist Tia Vincent- Clark , and drummer Leo Didkovsky , Hunt-Hendrix utilizes Liturgy’s past ruminations on burst beats and circuitous phrases as colors to paint rich murals that overwhelm and invigorate the senses. Pieces like “Djennaration” mirror 19th central classical compositions through their formal structures as well as their evocative arrangements that reach towards the sublime. Strings, choirs, flutes, horns and bells soar to climactic heights. Liturgy’s use of symphonic forms is less subversion of rock music than it is a wholehearted embrace, fully exploiting the power and dynamism of each in tandem. Title track “93696” employs the most steady backbeat of Liturgy’s oeuvre within a 15-minute through-composed epic, dynamics in constant flux, colored with twinkling bells and measured piano, counterpoint to their usual chaotic, progressive rhythms. Didkovsky’s unending dexterity and precision behind the kit belies the ensemble’s ferocity and infectious groove in equal measure. Miron’s guitar twirls in dizzying countermelodies to Hunt-Hendrix’s squall as Vincent-Clark’s roaring bass tethers the quartet’s intricate rhythm framework to their melodicism. “Angel of Hierarchy,” “Red Crown II” and “Angel of Individuation” lay bare Hunt-Hendrix’s ability to conjure haunting beauty from any combination of instruments, whether it’s through marxophone, ocarina, string orchestra or children’s choir. By seamlessly incorporating disparate sources, from “Djenneration”’s trap shuffle to the spackled glitches of “Before I Knew the Truth” to the robotic cadence on “Haelegen II,” Hunt-Hendrix employs another facet of her musical voice into the compositions, a defiant proclamation of agency and independence in the face of expectation. The music of Liturgy is in a constant state of searching. In pursuit of larger truths, be they philosophical or personal, Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix and her band imbue their music with a sense of urgency and ceaseless longing. 93696 reflects the awe of the unknowable and celebrates what revelations and mysteries lie ahead.

Besides the times of year that have their own distinctive character, there remains in the yearly cycle thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated, but rather the mystery of Christ itself is honoured in its fullness, especially on Sundays. This period is known as Ordinary Time.

Universal Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar , 42

Beginning with the Third Sunday, there is a semicontinuous reading of the Synoptic Gospels. This reading is arranged in such a way that as the Lord's life and preaching unfold the teaching proper to each of these Gospels is presented.

The Catholic Church

Bishops' Conference of England and Wales

Liturgy is the divine worship of the Church - all the public acts of worship that take place including the celebration of Mass, the celebration of the Sacraments, and the Divine Office or Daily Prayer of the Church.

Also in Our Work

It is, in many ways, the public face of the Church and it is through the liturgy that people engage with the faith and deepen their relationship with God.

The celebration of the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith, and so all other liturgies flow from and to the celebration of Mass.

The Department for Christian Life and Worship advises the Bishops on subjects relating to the material and spiritual life of the Church.

  • New Lectionary

A new edition of the Lectionary, the book which contains the readings which are proclaimed at Mass, will come into use in England and Wales on the First Sunday of Advent 2024. For information and resources on the new Lectionary, visit the  dedicated section in our  What’s On  area .

The Liturgy Office for England and Wales has its own website with texts, resources and information.

In November 2018, the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales agreed that the Catholic Edition of the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible should be the basis for the new edition of the Lectionary to be used in their territory.

  • Liturgy Committee

The liturgy is the source and the summit of the Church’s life. Through the liturgy the Church offers a living sacrifice of praise to God and so receives the grace to be the light of the world and to glorify the Father in the eyes of all.

Advent - Cycle A

In Cycle A, last observed in Advent 2022, the focus falls on St Matthew. Our Gospel readings at Sunday Mass are predominantly taken from Matthew. You can listen to the whole of St Matthew's Gospel in audio.

Taylor Swift seemingly wipes snot on outfit during chilly Eras tour performance

Taylor Swift wipes nose

Taylor Swift is learning the downsides of the UK weather if the latest video from her Eras Tour is anything to go by.

In a clip captured by a fan, the 34-year-old American singer wipes her nose while striding forward on stage during an Edinburgh performance.

As her hand returns to her side, there appears to be some kind of fluid hanging off her finger.

Ever the professional, she then light touches her green skirt with the same hand, potentially in a bid to get rid of whatever it was.

8JackSzn who posted the video, jokingly wrote alongside the clip: ‘The UK weather really got our Tay Tay.’

The comments section was filled with fans, who appreciate the ‘human moment’.

@8jackszn the uk weather really got our tay tay 🥹🤧 #taylorswift #therastour #edinburgh #1989 #wildestdreams #fyp #foryou ♬ original sound – 𝐉𝐀𝐂𝐊 🐨

‘I love these kind of videos of her cause it reminds is that she’s just like us! Tay tay I love you even more!!!!’ wrote Venezia Yu.

Nini Hansen remarked: ‘Omg she is human.’

‘She’s human lol, she doesn’t have a tissue on stage, what is she supposed to do?’ asked Janelle Lohner.

In a separate video, Taylor, this time in a different costume of a black jumpsuit, which only covered one leg, once again touches her nose and then immediately wipes her hand.

Fan XCrystine, who shared the moment on TikTok, heaped praise on Taylor for managing to brave the 8 Celsius temperature, and called her ‘grace personified’.

The open-air Murrayfield Stadium may have provided a slight challenge for Taylor, but she managed to keep the crowds thoroughly entertained over the two nights.

The unseasonably cold weather isn’t the only curveball Taylor has contended with during her sold-out concerts.

Taylor chose to stop singing but continued to play the guitar in Scotland after she realised a fan was in distress .

‘Need help right in front of me, right in front of me please,’ she announced.

‘She’s right in front of me, just gonna keep playing until we notice where it is, right, right there. I’m just gonna keep playing ’til somebody helps them, then I’m going to keep singing the song.’

Once the fan was given assistance, she launched back into the song. However, later she only again needed to pause after getting a cramp in her hand.

Also on the June 7 performance, two fans got engaged, and earlier in the year, an attendee began having contractions but in a true testament to her love for the artist, she ‘danced through the pain’ . It’s all happening at Taylor’s gigs!

Metro.co.uk’s reporter and lifelong Swiftie Danni Scott was one of the 70,000 people present for the first UK date, and described it as ‘feeling like a religious experience’ .

‘I’m not ashamed to say I cried multiple times,’ she reflected.

‘The entirety of Edinburgh was buzzing as Swiftiemania took over.’

Devoted fans didn’t let a little thing like not having a ticket stop them from getting involved either. Instead, they gathered around the stadium with picnic blankets and danced to the music.

Taylor may want to invest in some kind of sparkly coat as her UK visits continue this month with stops in Liverpool, Cardiff, London, and Dublin.

She will then return once again to the UK in August after completing more gigs across Europe and will perform five more times at Wembley Stadium before heading to Canada in November after a break.

Hopefully, it will have brightened up a little bit by then!

Doja Cat review, Ovo Hydro Glasgow: Rapper’s first UK arena tour showcases her charisma – and her growing pains

The rapper proves a captivating presence throughout a set that sometimes wants for a little more variety, article bookmarked.

It sometimes seems like Doja Cat lives her entire life within the 9:16 box of an Instagram Story. The 28-year-old American rapper and singer is a true internet-era celebrity, a performer who owes her hits (as well as the occasional controversy ) to the whizzy virality of social media. As she walks out at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro arena on Tuesday to kick off her UK stadium tour, I wonder how someone so eminently online will approach a large-scale live experience. From the opening rendition of the pugnacious, Drake-like “ACKNOWLEDGE ME”, which she performs while flanked by two large angel wings made of hair, it’s clear the answer is: with verve.

Doja (real name Amala Dlamini) begins the night wearing a long, blonde wig, an oversized, unbuttoned shirt and lingerie; after a couple of songs, the shirt is gone. It’s at this point too that the energy lifts, as she launches into a propulsive performance of “WYM Freestyle”. Almost every song she goes through tonight is drawn from last year’s album Scarlet , or this April’s expanded re-release, Scarlet 2 CLAUDE. Both were top-to-toe hip-hop records, a pointed departure from the pop-leaning material that preceded it. Lyrically, her concerns were largely unchanged: topics such as sex, fame, the internet, herself.

Throughout the first tracks of the night, Doja moves a little stiffly, her face stony with concentration; when, five songs in, she switches to an older favourite – 2019’s “Tia Tamera”, with its dextrous and catchy barrage of pop-culture references – you can see her start to have a good time.

Scarlet was very much a “proof of concept” when it comes to Doja’s rapping credentials; tracks such as “Get Into It (Yuh)” and the trap hit “Need to Know”, a Nicki Minaj-inspired single from 2021’s Planet Her , let her really flex this on stage. This latter number draws some boisterous rapping-along from the loud but rather static stalls section. It ends with her guitarist stepping out centre stage for a long and squealy solo. (He is dressed in hair-covered trousers from the waist down, giving him the look of Mr Tumnus from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , or as if an actor playing Chewbacca needed to go out for a cigarette.)

Halfway through the set, Doja tells the crowd: “I won’t sing Hilary Duff this time, I’m not gonna do that.” It’s a tongue-in-cheek reference to her Parklife set last week, when a cover of Duff’s “Come Clean” drew bafflement from her audience. This is quite comfortably the most that Doja says between songs all night. In her music, though, she’s loquacious – her lyrics might not have the depth or sophistication of some of the genre’s very best, but they’re slick and undeniably infectious.

On the one hand, the production is refreshingly low-maintenance for a 90-minute stadium gig: there are no costume changes and few elaborate group dances. What it does have is enough pyrotechnics to produce a remake of Backdraft , and a complicated set design involving an elevating platform hung from the ceiling, which sort of resembles a U-boat, or a long metallic baguette. Doja climbs onto this platform, harnessed, as she performs “Can’t Wait” and “Agora Hills”, auto-tuning her vocals over a patient trap beat. She never looks completely at ease when she’s dangled some five-to-10 metres above the ground, but she twerks through it anyway. The live band, meanwhile, are arranged on top of what I first assume to be bales of hay; on closer inspection, these too, seem to be made of hair.

A gig of this scale perhaps requires a larger and more diverse repertoire to really draw from. Doja blasts through 24 tracks on the night, but they begin to bleed into each other. “Often” is a lull – sparse and slightly dissonant – and you can sense the energy sap from the room. But the high points are compelling: the snaky melodies of “Attention”; the snappy and dynamic “Rules”.

The climax of the show comes with her biggest hit, “Paint the Town Red”. It’s a big banger, and she obviously knows it: dangling the microphone in the direction of the crowd, she defers the staccatoed, slightly off-kilter scansion of the verses to the word-perfect onlookers. The encore, “Wet Vagina”, struggles to really follow it.

What we’re left with is an imperfect set, but a perfect showcase of Doja’s electric confidence, what younger gig-goers might call her rizz . There were four backing singers on stage throughout the night, but I couldn’t tell you anything about them. All eyes – and all cameras – were trained on Doja Cat. As they should be.
