Horizontal Falls

The turquoise water of Talbot Bay ( Ganbadba ) and the fast-moving tidal current squeezes through two narrow gorges of the McLarty Range, pushing the water into rapid like formations which rush through the twin gaps at an astonishing rate, producing waterfalls turned on their side. The powerful tides in the Kimberley can reach more than 10 metres and the direction of the flow reverses ensuring the water flows two different ways each day.

The white waters are thrilling to see up close and awe-inspiring to view from the air. Join a scenic flight and land in Talbot Bay or day cruise to the Horizontal Falls from Cygnet Bay, Broome or Derby to see and experience it for yourself.

Nicknamed ' the Horries ' and known as Garaanngaddim to the Aboriginal community, the Horizontal Falls are located in the Lang-garram / Horizontal Falls Marine Park.

The North Lalang-garram Marine Park lies between Lalang-garram / Camden Sound Marine Park and the North Kimberley Marine Park and covers about 110,000 hectares.

Located in the Buccaneer Archipelago this unique waterfall is not accessible directly by vehicle/road. You can see it with half day, full day, overnight stays, helicopter flights or small plane tours. We do have some options that include a 4WD journey that meets the seaplane at Cygnet Bay (these are the Fly/Drive or Drive/Fly tours).

Get up close with an multi day, extended Kimberley cruise that includes a visit to Talbot Bay, or visit by seaplane and land at the Horizontal Falls floating pontoon base to enjoy a thrilling boat ride close to the rushing water torrents.

Choose from scenic flight only options, or tours which include on the ground experiences on the Dampier Peninsula.

On neap tide dates , there are alternative options to still see the falls and you can flyover the Horizontal Falls with a scenic flight from Broome, Cygnet Bay or Derby all year round.

*For safety reasons the minimum age for the sea safari tour is 5 years of age. During neap tides, the Giant Tides Sea Safari is replaced by the Kimberley Island Explorer Boat Tour. This neap tide experience traverses the intertidal zones of the beautiful and deserted 'thousand islands' which make up the Buccaneer Archipelago. Due to scheduled tour times at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, we cannot guarantee the amount or level of water flowing through the Horizontal Waterfalls at our chosen time of arrival.

The pilot did try to fly us through the weather but in the end decided it wasn’t safe so turned back. He was able to give us a comprehensive aerial tour of the Broome area which was great. Cygnet Bay was a stunning location & included breakfast & lunch which was fine. However after the pearl farm tour Broome Aviation had neglected to add my name on the sea safari tour, so I was not on the manifest to board the boat to see the whirlpools & waterfall reef. This meant I had to wait at Cygnet Bay for 2 hours & was given a free drink voucher…this was very very disappointing as the tour cost me $1145 & left me feeling flat for the rest of the trip home. I was refunded $343 which I felt was poor considering it was the company’s mistake. So I will not be recommending this tour to others. Read more Written 24 June 2023

• Fearless423987 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointed with Broome Aviation My wife and I went on this tour on Monday 29 May 2023. The tour for us was overall interesting and scenic. However we were disappointed in a few aspects of Broome aviation. The initial booking process with Siggy was good after Viatourcould not automatically confirm it online. However the night before the tour we did not get contacted for confirmation of the all important pickup times until 10:10pm, very late, after we had chased up Broome Aviation on the phone. The next day we were worried on the flight that we were in the back two seats of the small 6 seater Cessna with a rather immobile elderly woman and her large daughter seated in the two seats in front of us adjacent the exit doors. If there had been an emergency landing and exit there would be very little prospect of us getting out fast because of the immobility of the two middle seat passengers. We believe Broome Aviation did not take any due consideration of ensuring the exit row passengers were suitable for sitting in that location. The safety was questionable in my opinion. A further disappointing aspect was that one lady on our tour missed out on the boat trip from the Cygnet Bay pearl farm. This was apparently because Broome Aviation did not make the relevant booking with the boat operator. The lady was extremely disappointed and the rest of us felt terrible as well. The lady who missed out had to wait around for the couple of hours with very little to do. She did not get a full refund for the day and only got a $343 refund for the boat component. We believe this is very ordinary on Broome Aviation’s part. All in all I do not recommend the tours offered by Broome Aviation. Read more Written 10 June 2023

Our pilot Max was professional, knowledgeable of the areas we were flying over and did everything he could to ensure our flight/tour was the most comfortable. We found the Giant Tides tour to be value for money. It is an experience that will be remembered. The flight path provides excellent photo opportunities. 10/10 to Max and the team at Broome Aviation. The tour itself is breathtaking, the scenery and visibility that's provided was fantastic. The Bungle Bungles are out of this world and the local tour guide through the area provides insights of the traditions and how the custodians used the area. Irkutsk to Krasnoyarsk: The road between two of Siberia’s most thriving cities

The Paris of Siberia

Originally established as a trading center, Irkutsk was founded over 350 years ago. Today, the wealth that once poured into the city is evident in the many historic wooden houses featuring elaborate woodwork and window trim. Once referred to as the “Paris of Siberia,” Irkutsk has traditionally served as Siberia’s cultural, economic and intellectual capital.

Don’t leave the city before visiting the Znamensky Monastery or the Bogoyavlensky Cathedral , which were both originally destroyed by fires during Irkutsk’s early days. The monastery, completed in 1772, features a small cemetery where notable locals are buried. The cathedral features a jumble of onion domes and towers that have long made it one of Siberia’s most iconic buildings.

The Hotel Victoria is a good option with rooms starting at $100 a night including breakfast and parking.

After exploring the southern coast of Lake Baikal on your drive along the Trans-Siberian Highway, you can visit the lake’s western coast as a day trip from Irkutsk.

Hop on a ferry run by the Eastern-Siberian Inland Navigation Company, also known by its Cyrillic acronym, VSRP . The ferry company offers package tours and ferry service to numerous towns on Lake Baikal.

If you just want to get out on the water for a few hours, VSRP runs a historic tour along the Angara River (about $10, 1 hour) that includes an audio guide. You can also book a tour to beautiful Peschanaya Bay (about $50, 10 hours, Fridays and Sundays only), or the quaint lakeside village of Bolshie Koty (about $26, 4-10 hours depending on the boat).

You can also buy a ferry ticket at VSRP to many Baikal towns. Bolshie Koty (about $13, 1.5 hours from Irkutsk) is one of the most tranquil locations on the lake. Ferries run to the village three times a day from Irkutsk except for Mondays and select weekdays during the summer. Check the ferry schedule before planning your trip.

To get back on the road from Hotel Victoria, drive south on ul. Karla Marksa and take a right on ul. Lenina. Turn left on ul. Chkalova and bear right toward the Angarsky Bridge. On the other side of the bridge, get on the M-55 Federal Highway.

Outside Irkutsk the route number on the Trans-Siberian Highway changes to M-53, which will take you to the city of Krasnoyarsk (14 hours, 1,000 kilometers). The long drive to Krasnoyarsk consists of tall hills and farmland. Like the drive through the Russian Far East, you can park your car by the road and camp, although it’s best to ask for permission if you see a house nearby.

Siberia is a land of rivers, and the city of Bratsk (9 hours, 600 kilometers north of Irkutsk) is home to the Bratsk Dam , once the world’s largest hydroelectric power station.
