Tour of Britain 2022 route: Everything you need to know about the stages of the 18th edition

A stage-by-stage guide to the route of the 2022 Tour of Britain

Words: Rachel Jary

The 18th edition of the 2022 Tour of Britain is set to be a spectacle. Kicking off on the September 4, the eight-day race will begin in Aberdeen before heading the Scottish Borders then moving west towards the North Pennines. Following this, the steep climbs of North Yorkshire await the riders, then the stunning Cotswolds. The penultimate stage takes place in Dorset before the grand finale on the Isle of Wight.

Tour of Britain 2022 Route – The stages

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2022, STAGE ONE (04/09): ABERDEEN > GLENSHEE SKI CENTRE (181.3KM)

tour of britain general classification 2022

The lead up to this point in the race isn’t a simple one, though, with rolling roads right from the flag drop in Aberdeen. The stage features a sprint point after just 27 kilometres so we can expect to see a furious start, and there are three categorised climbs to follow from then on. A further two sprint points in the latter half of the stage means that the opening day gives riders little respite, with drama to be expected throughout. The winner of this stage will wear the first leader's jersey of the race, and it will then be a case of seeing if they can bold it all the way to the finish.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2022, STAGE TWO (05/09): HAWICK > DUNS (175.2KM)

tour of britain general classification 2022

Packed into the final 25 kilometres of the race are three third category climbs. While they aren’t long, they will seriously test the legs after a day of racing and could put some sprinters in danger. Teams who don’t want a bunch finish will use these hills as springboards for attacks and hope to stay away on the descent to the finish in Duns.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2022, STAGE THREE (06/09): DURHAM > SUNDERLAND (163.6KM)

tour of britain general classification 2022

The category two Billy Lane climb comes roughly 40 kilometres later. It’s not as long as Chapel Fell or as steep, but it will still sting the legs after a tough opening to the stage. The route gradually descends towards the final climb of the day – the third category High Moorsley climb – which comes with just under 20 kilometres to go to the finish. The finish itself is a flat run-in to Sunderland which could be won by the breakaway or be an opportunity for the fast men who have hung on to this point.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2022, STAGE FOUR (07/09): REDCAR > DUNCOMBE PARK, HELMSLEY (149.5KM)

tour of britain general classification 2022

The peloton then has a little respite before a savage, unrelenting final 30 kilometres of the stage. The Carlton Bank climb kicks off proceedings, it’s a 2km long ascent with an average gradient of 9.8%. Newgate Bank follows 12 kilometres later, a similar length to Carlton Bank but the inclines aren’t quite as severe. The stage finishes after the peloton has descended to the line in Duncombe Park, one of Yorkshire’s finest historic houses and estates.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2022, STAGE FIVE (08/09): WEST BRIDGFORD > MANSFIELD (186.8KM)

tour of britain general classification 2022

The second incline of the day comes with just over 30 kilometres of racing to go and the route does steadily climb upwards from then on towards the finish in Mansfield. Sprinters should be able to hold on to the peloton in today’s stage, but they will have fatigue in their legs following the tough stage in Yorkshire the day before. However, this stage is as easy as it’s going to get for the fast men, it’s the only one in the 2022 Tour with less than 2,000 metres of climbing.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2022, STAGE SIX (09/09): TEWKESBURY > GLOUCESTER (170.9KM)

tour of britain general classification 2022

The second category climb, Crawley Hill, is the final one of the day coming 24 kilometres from the finish. It’s a rolling run-in to the line from here which could provide good terrain for a late attack for a breakaway to stay away. The finish itself in Gloucester is flat and fast.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2022, STAGE SEVEN (10/09): WEST BAY > FERNDOWN (175.9KM)

tour of britain general classification 2022

As the route heads inland towards Wareham the riders have some brief respite on flatter roads before things kick up again near the third ascent of the day: the second category Okeford Hill. From then on, it’s a rolling run-in to the finish which doesn’t include any categorised climbs, just one intermediate sprint point which comes 20 kilometres before the line. The sprinters could hang on in this stage and have a shot at the win, but it’s going to take some effort, especially with fatigue in the legs.

TOUR OF BRITAIN 2022, STAGE EIGHT (11/09): RYDE > THE NEEDLES (148.9KM)

tour of britain general classification 2022

Cowleaze Hill and Zig Zag Road come back-to-back after 110 kilometres of racing, and we can expect these climbs to split the peloton. From then, the riders will race along the Military Road towards The Needles Landmark Attraction. The 2022 Tour of Britain culminates with a two-kilometre climb up to Tennyson Down, the final 400 metres of which average a gradient of 9.6%, making it one of the hardest finishes in the race’s history.

Where to watch the 2022 Tour of Britain

The Tour of Britain will be televised live on ITV4 in the UK and around the world by Eurosport and the Global Cycling Network (GCN). Other International broadcasters are due to be announced later this month.

Eritrea’s Girmay wins his second stage on this Tour de France

tour of britain general classification 2022

Eritrea's Biniam Girmay crosses the finish line to win the eighth stage of the Tour de France cycling race over 183.4 kilometers (114 miles) with start in Semur-en-Auxois and finish in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, France, Saturday, July 6, 2024. (AP Photo/Jerome Delay)

COLOMBEY-LES-DEUX-EGLISES, France (AP) — Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay won a second stage at the Tour de France on Saturday when he edged a closing sprint to cement his status as the race’s fastest man.

Two-time Tour champion Tadej Pogacar kept the yellow jersey.

Girmay, who became the first Black rider to win a Tour stage this week, timed his effort perfectly at the end of the long stretch of road leading to the finish of Stage 8.

“To win one stage is already unbelievable, and winning a second stage while wearing the green jersey even more so,” Girmay said.

The tough false flat finish suited his style, and he made the most of it to beat Jasper Philipsen and Arnaud De Lie, extending his lead at the top of the rankings for the best sprinter’s green jersey.

“Today’s finish was perfect for me and I was super confident,” Girmay said. “I guess also then, the Tour de France being one of the hardest races in the world, once you win a stage you become aware that you are amongst the very best and that spurs you on.”

The stage finished in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, the home and final resting place of the late Charles de Gaulle. The former French President launched the French Resistance from a base in London and along with the Allies liberated France from the Nazis in 1944.

There was no major change in the general classification. Pogacar kept a 33-second lead over Remco Evenepoel, and two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard was in third place, lagging 1:15 behind.

The stage started with a high-octane pace as three riders — Neilson Powless, Stefan Bissegger, Jonas Abrahamsen — immediately jumped out of the peloton to open a 30-second gap at the front.

Despite having two men in the breakaway, EF Education-EasyPost riders later attacked from the main pack on hilly, wet roads and a group including Mark Cavendish got dropped.

Chasing points in the best climber’s classification, Abrahamsen went solo to the top of the Cote de Vitteaux and added more points on the slopes of the Cote de Verrey-sous-Salmaise and the following hills to further cement his polka dot jersey.

Helped by his teammates, Cavendish later merged with the yellow jersey group while Bissegger and Powless sat up. Meanwhile, Abrahamsen kept pushing hard on the pedals to increase his lead.

The pace of the peloton picked up in the second half of the stage and Abrahamsen’s long solo effort was brought to an end by the chase about 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the finish before sprinters took center stage.

There’s a tough stage on Sunday that takes the riders on a nearly 200-kilometre (124-mile) trek through the dust of the gravel roads near the Champagne city of Troyes. There will be 14 sections of so-called white roads — including six in the stage finale — that have become a trademark of Italy’s Strade Bianche.

Girmay also made history in Italy two years ago when he won a stage at the Giro d’Italia to become the first Black African to take a victory in a Grand Tour. But Girmay’s Giro victory was marred when he was rushed to a hospital after getting hit in the left eye by a prosecco cork he popped open during the podium celebration — forcing him to abandon the race.

Also in 2022, Girmay became the first rider from a sub-Saharan country to win a single-day classic at the Gent-Wevelgem race.

Riders from only one other African country — South Africa — have won Tour stages: Robert Hunter (2007) and Daryl Impey (2019). Four-time Tour champion Chris Froome was born and raised in Kenya but represented Britain.

Tour de France Stage 10 Preview: A Sprinter’s Stage With the Potential for Crosswinds

After Monday’s rest day, the the riders return on Tuesday with the Tour’s flattest stage.

111th tour de france 2024 stage 6

Stage 10 - Orléans to Saint-Amand-Montrond (187.5km) - Tuesday, July 9

The Tour’s second week begins on Tuesday with Stage 10, a 187.5km stage from Orléans to Saint-Amand-Montrond that’s probably the easiest stage in the 2024 Tour de France.

The race begins in Orléans, along the Loire river, and then begins the long ride south through the Sologne forest that’s bordered in the north by the Loire and in the south by the river Cher.

This is the flattest stage in the Tour–there’s not a single categorized climb throughout the day. That means Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility)–who’s been the leader of the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition since Stage 1–will keep the polka dot jersey into Stage 11.

timeline

The day’s Intermediate Sprint arrives after just 57km–in Romorantin-Lanthenay–which is early enough in the stage that we could see some sprinters try and soak up whatever green jersey points are left after the breakaway passes through.

Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) has a commanding 96-point lead over Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) in the Tour’s Points competition and could choose to sit back and save his legs for the end of the stage–especially if a big breakaway is up the road and takes the majority of the points available in Romorantin-Lanthenay.

The final hour of the stage could be tense. The roads are rather exposed after the race exits the forest, and with three direction changes in the final 30km, crosswinds and echelons are a real threat.

le tour de france 2013 stage thirteen

That’s exactly what happened on Stage 13 in 2013, the last time a Tour stage finished in Saint-Amand-Montrond. As the peloton raced toward the finish, Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish and a few of his Omega Pharma–Quick-Step teammates took advantage of some late-race crosswinds to break the peloton into echelons. A leading group of ten riders soon emerged and Cavendish outsprinted Slovakia’s Peter Sagan to take his second win of that year’s Tour.

The finale of this year’s Stage 10 comes pretty close to duplicating the finale from 2013–including a super-sketchy series of corners inside the final kilometer. The organizers better hope that crosswinds break the race into echelons, because bringing a large peloton through those corners–at field sprint speed–could get dicey–even with a modified 4km “safety zone” at the end of the stage.

It’s a flat finish, but the sprint before the sprint will be crucial as anyone who doesn’t make it through those final corners at the front of the bunch–or has to brake while going through them–will lose their shot at taking the win.

Riders to Watch

le tour de france 2013 stage thirteen

Stage 10 is expected to end in a field sprint. But with a chance of crosswinds in the final hour, the stage could go to a sprinter who can handle himself if the race breaks into echelons–perhaps someone who has some experience in the spring Classics, races in which the weather can often play as big of a role as the terrain.

That makes Girmay a top favorite. In 2022 the Eritrean won Ghent-Wevelgem, a Belgian Classic in which crosswinds frequently blow apart the peloton. This could also be the day in which Philipsen–who’s winless so far this year after winning four stages and the green jersey in 2023–finally breaks through in this year’s Tour.

Last but not least, there’s Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan). The 39-year-old scored his record-breaking 35th stage victory on Stage 5, but could add No. 36 by winning for the second time in Saint-Amand-Montrond.

How to Watch Stage 10 of the Tour de France

You can stream Stage 10 of the 2024 Tour de France on NBC’s Peacock ($5.99/month or $59.99/year). If you’re looking for ad-free coverage, you’ll need a subscription to Peacock Premium Plus, which runs $11.99 per month or $119.99 for the year.

This stage could be a slow one. Coming right out of the Tour’s first Rest Day, the riders won’t be in any hurry to get to the finish–and there’s little along the way to make things exciting.

So while the race is expected to finish around 11:35 a.m. EDT, we think that’s a bit of an optimistic estimate. We’ll start checking on the peloton’s progress at about 10:45 a.m. EDT–in case there are crosswinds–and then make the call accordingly depending on how far the riders are from the finish. If nothing else, make sure you’re watching with about 10km to go.

Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay sprints to another stage victory at Tour de France

C OLOMBEY-LES-DEUX-EGLISES, France — Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay won his second stage Saturday at the Tour de France in a closing sprint to cement his status as the race’s fastest man.

Two-time Tour champion Tadej Pogacar kept the yellow jersey as overall leader.

Girmay, who became the first Black rider to win a Tour stage last week, timed his effort perfectly at the end of the long stretch of road leading to the finish of Stage 8.

The pace of the peloton picked up in the second half of the stage and Abrahamsen’s long solo effort was brought to an end by the chase about 9 miles from the finish before sprinters took center stage.

There’s a tough stage Sunday that takes the riders on a nearly 124-mile trek through the dust of the gravel roads near the Champagne city of Troyes.

Biniam Girmay (in green, third from right) sprints tot he finish of Stage 8 of the Tour de France at Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, France.

12. c. The first rider to die during the race was Adolphe Heliere, who passed away during a rest day in 1910. Francisco Cepeda died after a crash in the downhill of the Col du Galibier in 1935. One of the most successful British riders, Tom Simpson, died of heart failure during the 13th stage in 1967 which was later determined to be from an overdose of drugs and alcohol. The last rider to die on the Tour was Fabio Casartelli, who died after crashing in the descent of the 1,069-meter (3,507-foot) Col de Portet d’Aspet during the 1995 edition of the race.

13. a. En route to his first Tour de France win, Vingegaard moved away from Pogacar in the brutal climb to the top of the Col du Granon to enjoy a winning finish to an epic day in the Alps. The stage featured two other monster ascents, the daunting Col du Telegraphe and Col du Galibier.

Tour de France: Biniam Girmay wins his second stage

Two-time Tour champion Tadej Pogacar kept the yellow jersey.

The false flat finish suited his style, and he made the most of it to beat Jasper Philipsen and Arnaud De Lie, extending his lead at the top of the ranking for the best sprinter.
