Golden Gate Bridge tolls, ferry and bus fares to increase on Monday

June 27, 2024 / 11:28 AM PDT / CBS/Bay City News Service

Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge will cost 50 cents more for all drivers beginning on July 1.

Drivers of double-axle vehicles and motorcycles will see tolls for non-FasTrak drivers jump from $9.75 to $10.25. But all drivers will see some increase in tolls, including those who use FasTrak or carpool. FasTrak charges will rise to $9.25, and carpool rates will increase to $7.25. And drivers of vehicles with more than two axles see their tolls each jump 50 cents accordingly.

The toll increases are part of a plan passed in March by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, the agency that operates the bridge, as well as ferries and buses between Marin and San Francisco. Staff reported that the agency is facing a budget shortfall of $220 million over the next five years. Before the agency's board passed the plan, which schedules 50-cent toll raises each of the next five years, staff projected that the plan would generate $139 million in excess revenue.

The district has already been increasing tolls on the bridge by 35 cents per year since 2019.

Like most transit agencies, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District has seen its revenue struggle to recover since the pandemic. According to a March memo from staff to the agency's board, traffic across the Golden Gate Bridge has only rebounded to 85% of pre-pandemic levels and commute hours remain 30% lower. Bus and ferry routes administered by the district have only returned to 50% of pre-pandemic ridership, the memo said, and the district has been collecting almost $1 million dollars less in fares and tolls per week.

Fare increases of 25 cents for most of the district's bus and ferry lines will also accompany the toll increases on July 1, the second round of increases in a plan the district approved in 2023.

The district secured a one-time payment of federal COVID relief funds and reversed planned layoffs in 2020. But according to the staff memo, that funding runs out this month, leaving the district in need of new revenue.

When the agency's board passed the toll increases in March, it considered multiple options, with the 50-cent increase being the most aggressive. It chose the 50-cent increases, which would generate at least $25 million more than any other option, despite most public comments favoring a less aggressive approach.

But the district faces a larger budget shortfall even beyond the scope of the current increases. Over the next 10 years, the agency's staff projected it to face an almost $650 million budget shortfall before the toll plan was approved. And in the next five, the district still faces an $80 million shortfall not covered by the toll increases.

"We have a lot of hard work ahead, and we'll be looking at additional ways to reduce expenses or bring in more revenue to address the shortfall," said Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz, a spokesperson for the district. "We have face similar situations in the past, and we're optimistic that we can close the gap."

Record flooding inundates northwest Iowa, prompts evacuations, isolates one city

Historic flooding struck parts of Iowa over the weekend, damaging nearly 2,000 properties and prompting evacuations and disaster declarations.

"I can tell you that the devastation is severe and it's widespread," Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said at a news conference Sunday afternoon in Des Moines.

Flooding on Saturday and overnight into Sunday was the result not just of direct rain — some areas measured 15 inches in two days, Reynolds said — but also of overflowing rivers' flooding dry communities downstream, National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Vachalek said.

Precipitation drawn north from the Gulf of Mexico and parked over northwest Iowa and neighboring states was then unleashed in a clash with a cool, low-pressure wave moving from west to east, he said.

Flooding in Sioux County

An official tally for weather-related deaths over the weekend was not yet available. In Tucson, Arizona, fire officials said a motorist stranded in monsoonal floodwaters was declared dead Saturday when first responders discovered her lifeless body.

In South Dakota, an 87-year-old man driving a utility task vehicle — a golf cart-size conveyance with off-road capability — died when it rolled down an embankment created by a washed-out roadway near Harrisburg on Saturday, the South Dakota Highway Patrol said in a statement.

Areas affected by direct rain or overflowing rivers also included southern Minnesota and southeastern Dakota, according to the National Weather Service.

The weekend rain fell on already saturated ground, making flooding fast and widespread in the northwest corner of Iowa. Reynolds indicated that farmland was hit hard.

There were enough rain and river swelling in the Des Moines, Rock and Little Sioux rivers, among others, to break flood level records at 16 locations in Iowa, Reynolds said.

More than 1,000 Iowans needed shelter overnight, 1,900 properties across the state were damaged, and hundreds of residential properties were destroyed, she said.

Some cities did not have working clean water systems Sunday, and some had sewage system failures, she said. Disaster declarations covered 25 Iowa counties by nightfall Sunday.

Spencer, a city of more than 11,000, was cut off from the rest of the state by floodwater overnight as hundreds were evacuated to two city shelters, Mayor Steve Bomgaars said.

Spencer Fire Chief Jesse Coulson said city first responders, with the mutual-aid help of neighboring departments, made 383 rescues since the first one related to floodwater was reported at 5:15 a.m. Saturday.

Flooding in Sioux City, Iowa

One person was missing, Coulson said at a news conference Sunday where Bomgaars also spoke. Coulson indicated the missing could be recovered from a flooded vehicle after waters recede.A nighttime curfew for the city was to return Sunday, Bomgaars said, as authorities were expected to fan out and check on residents cut off by floodwaters after they recede a few feet.

On Friday, city and county officials expected the Little Sioux River to crest at 17.5 feet but said it did so multiple feet higher. The crest level was an estimate, however.

"The electronic gauge that the Iowa Flood Center put in was under water," Clay County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Eric Tigges said at the Spencer news conference. "That makes it difficult for us to get an accurate reading."

He and city officials believe the river crested at 22.1 feet, beating a record set in 1953 by about 2 feet. With that number falling, some roads were passable and residents could get out with careful planning, officials said.

"We're going to recover from this," Bomgaars said.

In South Dakota, Gov. Kristi Noem declared a statewide emergency and said the worst of the flooding would come Monday and Tuesday by river.

The Big Sioux River in South Dakota was expected to crest Sunday night, and state officials closed Interstate 29 in the southeastern part of the state to build a temporary levee across it, they said in a statement.

The threat of severe thunderstorms remained, with the director of Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, John Benson, urging residents to stay vigilant.

Flooding in Hawarden, Iowa

The Des Moines River at Humboldt, a small city about 105 miles north of Des Moines, was forecast to crest Wednesday at 17 feet, more than a foot higher than its record in 1969, according to the National Weather Service. On Sunday it flowed more than a foot above flood stage, the agency said. The rain and swelling waterways contrasted with persistent heat in much of the rest of the country on the first weekend of summer. Heat alerts covered an estimated 95 million people in the U.S. on Sunday, with near-record high temperatures — 5 to 15 degrees above normal — expected to remain at least through the early part of the week.

As high pressure baked the mid-Atlantic, where record temperatures were expected Sunday and Monday, the Southwest broiled in sometimes triple-digit temperatures, and parts of the Northeast were expected to experience brief rain and thunderstorms alongside high temperatures.

Another cool wave moving in from the West was expected to clash with warm, wet air stationed over the Great Plains and the Midwest, triggering the possibility of more severe thunderstorms, federal forecasters said.

Rain, wind, hail and flooding were possible again beginning Monday night for northern Iowa, as well as for northern Missouri, northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, southwest Lower Michigan, northern Indiana and northwestern Ohio, they said.

"It's not going to cease," Benson, the Iowa emergency management director, said of the flooding, thunder and rain. "It's going to blossom."

Should you send a credit card travel notice?

April 25, 2024 | 3 min read

There was a time when credit card issuers and banks requested travel notices so they’d know when you’d be using your card while you were away from home. But that’s generally a thing of the past.

However, it’s still helpful to double-check that your contact information is up to date in case you need to be reached while traveling.

Key takeaways

  • A travel notice can help your credit card issuer or bank know when any transactions are made while traveling.
  • You may not need to notify your bank or credit card issuer of your travel plans, thanks to improvements in fraud detection technology and security.
  • You don’t need to alert Capital One of your travel plans, and your credit card is covered for unauthorized purchases if your card is lost or stolen. 1
  • It’s a good idea to make sure your contact information is up to date in case your bank or credit card issuer needs to reach you during your trip. You might want to also have your credit card’s contact information saved so you can easily refer to it if you need it.

What is a credit card travel notice.

A credit card travel notice is a way for you to alert your credit card company about your upcoming travel plans. An advance notice tells your credit card company to expect charges from another city, state or country . But it’s not as common as it used to be to set a travel alert before you use your credit card abroad or somewhere different.

Do credit card companies require a travel notice?

Many credit card companies, including Capital One, no longer request travel notices. They’re generally not necessary these days due to improvements in fraud detection technology and the added security of EMV chips and contactless cards . But if you need to contact your credit card issuer, you might want to make sure you have the contact information saved somewhere so you can easily refer to it.

How to notify a bank or issuer about your travel plans

If your bank or card issuer requires you to set a travel notice, you might do it online, over the phone or through an app. Check with your bank or card issuer to learn how it handles travel notices.

Capital One travel notices

There’s no need to tell Capital One about your travel plans—even if you’re traveling abroad. Just make sure the contact information associated with your account is up to date. That way, Capital One can contact you if there are any issues with your card.

Traveling with a Capital One credit card

If you’re a Capital One cardholder and your card is lost or stolen, you can instantly lock your credit card to prevent it from being used for purchases. 2 And if you find it, you can unlock it just as easily to use your card again. The card lock feature is simple to use and takes just a few taps on the Capital One Mobile app . 3

You’re also covered by Capital One’s $0 liability for unauthorized charges policy. If your card is lost or stolen, you won’t be responsible for charges you did not authorize. 1

Want even more peace of mind? Add your mobile phone number to your account to automatically get alerts if Capital One notices potential suspicious activity. Capital One will message you from the same number every time so you can be confident it’s Capital One texting you. 4

These are just some of Capital One’s credit card security features .

Credit card travel notices in a nutshell

Your credit card company or bank may not need to be notified before you take a trip. That’s because of improvements in fraud detection technology and security. If you choose to set a travel alert, you can usually do it over the phone, online or in your bank’s or credit card issuer’s mobile app. But it’s a good idea to check with your bank or card issuer to see if it’s necessary to set a travel notice.

Economy | nhl draft: sharks select macklin celebrini no. 1 overall as new era begins, economy | big oakland hotel will shut its doors and idle more than 100 workers, hotel closure is scheduled for august.

Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel entry area at 1 Hegenberger Road in Oakland

Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel will chop 152 jobs, the hotel chain reported in an official notice it sent to the state Employment Development Department.

“It is with regret that we inform you of the closure of Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel located at 1 Hegenberger Road in Oakland,” Terry Lewis, a Hilton area vice president, wrote in the WARN letter to the state EDD.

The shutdown is scheduled to take place Aug. 28, according to the WARN notice.

The Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel’s closure offers fresh evidence that economic maladies continue to afflict the Bay Area lodging market in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak more than four years ago.

The ailments for the hotel market in the Bay Area affect primarily lodging complexes that cater to business travelers and those that are not located in resort areas such as the Wine Country, Monterey Bay region or Big Sur.

“There are still a lot of problems with the hotel market in the Bay Area,” said Alan Reay, president of Atlas Hospitality Group, which tracks the California lodging market. “The cost of operating big full-service hotels that are business-oriented seems to outweigh the income they can generate.”

The hotel buildings and common areas are owned by Park Hotels & Resorts, which is leasing the land beneath the hotel from the Port of Oakland.

Park Hotels & Resorts has walked away from its ownership of two upscale San Francisco hotels due to their faltering financial performance.

Park Hotels said they could not comment about the pending closure of the hotel.

Both Oakland and San Francisco are plagued by problems that tend to make those cities less attractive to visitors and business travelers.

“You have problems with crime on Hegenberger Road in Oakland and you have problems with crime and homelessness in San Francisco,” Reay said.

“We deeply regret the impact this closure will have on our dedicated employees and their families,” Hilton stated in the WARN letter to the EDD. “We are committed to providing support during this transition, including providing options for transfer to other Hilton locations in the Bay Area.”

Despite the shutdown in Oakland, Hilton says it’s committed to the Bay Area market.

“Hilton continues to welcome guests across the Bay Area where Hilton and our franchise partners operate nearly 50 hotels,” Hilton stated in comments it provided to this news organization.

The iconic hotel operator said it still views the Bay Area as a market that offers plenty of opportunities.

“We remain committed to doing our part to drive business, tourism and growth across the Bay Area and California,” Hilton stated in the WARN letter.

Nevertheless, larger business-oriented hotels such as those in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose still must combat problems due to a lack of business travelers and the woes with the region’s office hubs, in Reay’s view.

“The office market is still depressed, people are still working remotely, and there has been a major drop off in conventions,” Reay said. “When you factor in the crime problems on Hegenberger Road in Oakland and in San Francisco, that’s why these hotels are struggling.”

Ravens rookie puts division rival on notice for not drafting him

When the Cincinnati Bengals were on the clock with the 80th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft back in April, Devontez Walker was confident his name was about to be called.

The Bengals had shown a lot of interest in the 23-year-old receiver during the pre-draft process, and they needed to add another pass-catcher with Tee Higgins’ future very much in question.

But instead, the Bengals took another receiver, Alabama’s Jermaine Burton. That sting has stuck with Walker, who went 33 picks later to the Ravens, and he's eager to get his crack at Baltimore when the two teams meet in Cincinnati on Oct. 6.

“I got a bone to pick with Cincy,” Walker said on the “The Lounge” podcast. “That’s where I thought I was going but they took another receiver at that spot. … Cincinnati, that game is going to get rough.”
What are your expectation for Ravens WR Devontez Walker his rookie year? pic.twitter.com/OvZrZT54wu — Sarah Ellison (@sgellison) May 7, 2024

Walker took the snub a little hard than most. He grew up modeling his game after former Bengals great A.J. Green, a seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro selection who ranks second all-time in Bengals history in receptions (649), yards (9,430) and touchdowns (65).

“I thought it was going to be the Bengals; I thought it was going to be me,” Walker said. “I met with them the most pre-draft. … The Bills and the Bengals [are who] I had a real good feeling about, but the Ravens were not on my mind at all.”

Walker also disclosed that aside from a brief conversation with wide receivers coach Greg Lewis at the combine, he had the least amount of communication with the Ravens leading up to the draft, which is why his selection in the fourth round took him by surprise.

Golden 1 Credit Union Platinum Rewards card review

Golden 1 Credit Union Platinum Rewards card review

Written by: Kelly Dilworth

  • Low Interest

In a Nutshell:

If you live in Northern California, this is an ideal card to use for your everyday spending: The Golden1 Credit Union Platinum Rewards card offers one of the lowest APRs available on a rewards credit card while also offering one of the most generous bonus rates available without paying an annual fee.

Other Notable Features: EMV chip, Apple Pay, Visa checkout, no balance-transfer fee

Few cards can beat the APR on the Golden 1 Platinum Rewards card, which also features very reasonable rates and fees, including an exceptionally low fee for late payments. However, if you are looking to transfer a balance or finance a new purchase, you may be better served by a card that offers a 0-percent introductory APR.

For a card from a small credit union, the Golden 1 Credit Union Platinum Rewards is surprisingly generous. It offers a substantial amount of bonus cash on gas, grocery and restaurant purchases, making it a good choice for families that spend a lot on everyday purchases. It also features a refreshingly low interest rate, which has become an increasingly rare find in recent years.

The Golden 1 Credit Union Platinum Rewards card is limited in its availability, though, so not everyone qualifies. Only Golden 1 Credit Union members who live in California and have a Golden 1 savings account are eligible to apply.

Bonus cash for everyday spending

If you spend a lot on gas and groceries or eat out frequently, the Golden 1 Platinum Rewards card could be just what you need to rack up a significant amount of cash. The Platinum Rewards card gives cardholders 3 percent cash back on grocery, gas and restaurant purchases and 1 percent cash back on everything else. There no minimums on how much you can redeem, nor are there limits on the total amount you can earn, making it an ideal card for consumers who routinely use credit to pay for everyday purchases.

Relatively easy redemption

Golden 1 Credit Union also makes it relatively easy to redeem the cash you’ve earned by depositing it into your account at the close of each billing period. Many cash back cards , by contrast, make you request the cash you’ve earned. You may not qualify for cash back, though, if you don’t maintain a certain balance in your savings account. To qualify for the cash back rebates, you must hold a Golden 1 Credit Union share account and maintain the account’s minimum balance.

Golden 1 Credit Union also doesn’t offer any choice in how you can redeem your cash. Many cash back cards give cardholders the option of redeeming their cash for gift cards, merchandise or other noncash options.

Very low interest rate

Despite the Platinum Rewards card’s strict rules on redemption, the card is an excellent choice for cardholders who tend to carry a balance. Cardholders with the highest credit scores are charged just 9.29 percent, which is one of the lowest interest rates you can get on any credit card. The average low-interest card, for example, charges 11.62 percent, while the average cash back card charges a minimum of 15.27 percent. At 15.29 percent, the Platinum Rewards card’s maximum rate is also well below average for a cash back card.

Almost no perks

The biggest downside to the Golden 1 Platinum Rewards card is that it doesn’t offer as many perks as its competitors. Many other cash back cards offer premium travel and purchase benefits that can save you a lot of money down the road. Such benefits include car rental insurance, lost baggage insurance , extended warranty and price protection. The Golden 1 Platinum Rewards card does waive the card’s balance-transfer fee, making it cheaper to transfer a balance. But it doesn’t offer any promotional rates. It also doesn’t offer a sign-up bonus, so you’ll have to wait before you accumulate a significant amount.

Why get the Golden 1 Credit Union Platinum Rewards card?

  • You spend a lot on everyday purchases, such as gas and groceries, and want to be rewarded for spending.
  • You want a low-rate card that also offers substantial rewards.
  • You prefer cash back instead of points.
  • You’re already a Golden 1 Credit Union member and want a card with the same credit union.

How to use the Golden 1 Credit Union Platinum Rewards card:

  • Use your card for all gas, grocery and restaurant spending in order to maximize cash back.
  • Read through your savings account’s terms and make sure you’re maintaining the account’s minimum balance. Otherwise, you won’t receive cash back.
  • Use this card for everyday spending, but consider using a different card for premium perks – such as car rental insurance and lost baggage insurance – when you travel.

Is the Golden 1 Credit Union Platinum Rewards card worth it?

If you mainly use credit cards for everyday purchases like gas, groceries and dining out, the Golden 1 Platinum Rewards card could be a fantastic way to get cash back while avoiding a high APR and annual fee. You’ll miss out on the perks of some other rewards cards, but as long as cash back is your priority, there’s little downside to getting this card, as it offers a low APR, unlimited rewards and easy redemption as a deposit if you maintain a minimum account balance.

Golden Gate Bridge tolls, ferry and base fares increase on July 1

There's a plan to stop the humming sound on the golden gate bridge.

Authorities overseeing the golden gate bridge have announced a plan to try to stop the bridge from making a humming sound in the wind.

SAN FRANCISCO - Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge will cost 50 cents more for all drivers beginning on July 1.

We'll be right with you.
