Sports | Sports briefs: Bombers Baseball Academy wins USSSA event

Author

The Bombers, based in Greenbrae, capped their championship run with a 12-7 victory against ZT Prospects (Anaheim) on Aug. 4, scoring five times in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the win.

The Bombers roster featured Jack Leh, Callan Carey, Ben Walker, Cyrus Bentaleb, Gabe Oliveros, Cullen Ott, Blake Day, Beckett Glynn, Will Raymond, Max Daily, Jesse Wheeler, Ian Bowman, Zander Middleton, John Andreini, and Blaise Claxton.

The team, which went 27-6-1 with four tournament victories during the summer, was coached by Allan Kunst, assisted by Parker Ott and Ben Scott.

Bentaleb and Bowman keyed the final rally in the Bombers’ championship win, both accounting for two-out base hits during the five-run rally. The team also benefitted from a fast start, jumping out to a 5-0 lead on hits by Cullen Ott, Middleton, and Oliveros.

ZT Prospects eventually tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning but the Bombers surged back in front with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Claxton and Cullen Ott led off the inning with hits and later came around to score on hits by Bentaleb and Andreini.

The Bombers went 3-0-1 in pool play, getting the tie in the fourth and final game to wrap up the top seed in the single-elimination stage of the tournament. The Bombers needed a late rally in that crucial game against 365 Lights Out (Valencia).

Andreini led off the last inning with a hit to left field with the Bombers trailing 6-5. Andreini advanced to second after the next batter drew a walk, then took third on a wild pitch. The throw back to third got away from the defense and Andreini came around to score the tying run as the game ended 6-6.

The Bombers drew MVP SD Black (San Diego) in the quarterfinals. The teams engaged in a pitchers’ duel with neither team scoring a run through the first five innings. Andreini pitched for the Bombers, going the distance while allowing two hits with seven strikeouts on 70 pitches.

The Bombers walked off with a win in the bottom of the sixth when Andreini found a hole in the infield with a single, allowing Middleton to score on a close play at the plate for a 1-0 victory.

The Costa Mesa Sox, then-ranked No. 2 in California in the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) rankings, awaited the Bombers in the semifinals. Bentaleb started on the mound, going five innings with three runs allowed. The Bombers spotted him a 4-0 lead with some clutch hitting from Middleton, Day and Raymond.

Costa Mesa pulled within 4-2 but Bowman hit a bases-loaded single in the fifth to push the lead up to 5-2. Day, the team’s closer, came in and pitched the sixth inning to secure the win and the team’s spot in the championship game.

Spring Breakout returns as MLB unveils 2025 Spring Training schedule

Major League Baseball announced on Thursday that 2025 Spring Training will officially begin on Thursday, Feb. 20 , as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Chicago Cubs in Glendale, Ariz., to open the Cactus League season. On Friday, Feb. 21, the New York Yankees will host the Tampa Bay Rays in Tampa, Fla., to open the Grapefruit League season before a full slate of games including all 30 teams are featured on both Saturday, Feb. 22, and Sunday, Feb. 23.

Following its debut last March, Spring Breakout will return in 2025 with games from March 13-16, showcasing baseball’s future stars as clubs assemble their top prospects to play in exhibition games against one another. Spring Breakout will begin on Thursday, March 13, with a pair of matchups between top-10 farm systems as ranked by MLB Pipeline . The top-ranked Rays prospects will square off against the seventh-ranked Boston Red Sox in Port Charlotte, Florida while the top prospects of the eighth-ranked Cubs and fifth-ranked Dodgers meet in Glendale, Arizona. A third matchup of top-10 farm systems highlights the balance of the Spring Breakout schedule as the ninth-ranked Seattle Mariners visit the fourth-ranked Cleveland Guardians in Goodyear, Ariz., on Friday, March 14.

A total of 95 players have appeared in the Majors this season after their participation in March’s inaugural Spring Breakout, including 35 players who have been featured on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list this year. In addition, 48 of the 54 players on the 2024 All-Star Futures Game rosters took part in Spring Breakout, and rosters for the upcoming Arizona Fall League are also expected to include many players who were featured during Spring Breakout.

The Atlanta Braves will travel to Mesa, Ariz., to play two games against the Cubs on Monday, March 24, and Tuesday, March 25, in a crossover matchup between Grapefruit and Cactus League clubs. In another crossover contest, the Rockies will visit the Twins on March 25 in Fort Myers, Fla. In addition, a number of exhibition games on March 23-25 will be played at Major and Minor League ballparks. The scheduled meetings thus far include the three-game Freeway Series between the Dodgers and Angels at Dodger Stadium on March 23 and at Angel Stadium on March 24-25; the Royals visiting the Rangers at Globe Life Field in Arlington; the Guardians visiting the D-backs at Chase Field in Phoenix; and the Astros hosting the Triple-A Sugar Land Skeeters at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Additional exhibition games at Major and Minor League ballparks are expected to be added in the coming months.

Having gone all-in on their bullpen, San Diego Padres plan to ride their unique approach into the postseason

W hen the trade deadline rolls around, San Diego Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller is usually on the hunt for a big deal. And why not? Preller has developed a farm system, regularly ranked in the top five in MLB, that can attract other teams looking to move stars. At the past four deadlines, the Padres have acquired superstars such as Juan Soto and Josh Hader and solid supporting players such as Josh Bell and Brandon Drury.

San Diego took a different approach to its moves this season, yet they're now the hottest team in baseball, having gone 16-4 since the All-Star break with their eyes firmly on the postseason heading into Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Relievers were the name of the game for the Padres at the deadline, as they acquired right-hander Jason Adam from the Tampa Bay Rays and southpaw Bryan Hoeing, as well as the best reliever available in left-hander Tanner Scott, from the Miami Marlins.

The Padres already had a respectable bullpen before those moves, with left-handers Yuki Matsui and Adrian Morejon having career years along with newcomer Jeremiah Estrada. The Padres are led in the backend by electric closer Robert Suarez.

The additions of Adam, Hoeing and Scott provide a level of depth that not many teams around baseball can match, and that sets San Diego up well for a run to the postseason.

During the playoffs, especially in the past 20 years, bullpens are critical in determining a team’s success or failure. The leash on starters gets shorter in October, leaving a team’s relief core to cover more outs, with high-leverage situations often coming early in games.

Having Adam, Scott and Suarez to cover the seventh, eighth and ninth innings is a luxury that any team would love to have in the postseason, and it'll be an advantage for San Diego should it get there. With two months to allow Morejon, Matsui, Estrada and Hoeing to jell, the Padres' bullpen might be the group that propels San Diego into the postseason.

San Diego has been trying to stay afloat while it figures out what its rotation will look like the rest of the way, following the injury to Joe Musgrove, the absence of Yu Darvish and recent struggles from knuckleballer Matt Waldron. The team even acquired long-time veteran Martín Pérez as additional depth.

If the Padres, who are currently tied for the first NL wild-card spot , reach the postseason, you have to imagine that manager Mike Shildt will take full advantage of his bullpen’s depth in an attempt to take pressure off the rotation.

For the first time in a long time, the Padres left their core of position players untouched at the deadline. And much of that has to do with the reinforcements already being there. Over the past month, the Padres have the sixth-best offense in baseball in terms of runs scored. Manny Machado looks healthy, Xander Boegarts is finally playing like the player the Padres expected him to be, Jurickson Profar has continued to have a career year, and rookie Jackson Merrill has carried the team offensively in recent weeks. Not to mention, Fernando Tatis Jr. is expected back before season’s end.

With San Diego scoring at its current pace and the ability to shorten games with their bullpen, the Padres become a difficult team to beat not only in the postseason but in the rest of the regular season as well.

The Padres have had several iterations of their ballclub over the past few years, and while this version has fewer top-tier names than in years prior, this version might be made for October. San Diego is clearly playing with confidence as of late, and sometimes, that’s all a team needs to make a sustained push to the postseason.

San Diego Padres

San diego padres | padres lose lead, come back again to complete sweep of pirates.

travel baseball san diego

Thursday, they ended up being a little lucky, which might not be better but certainly worked just fine.

“Just compete until the last (of the) 27 outs are made,” Manny Machado said.

That is among the Padres’ mantras this season. And that 27th out was the Pirates’ problem on Thursday.

A throwing error on what appeared would be a game-ending double play brought the Padres back from the brink, and they went on to a 7-6 victory that completed a three-game sweep.

The Padres entered the ninth inning down a run before Xander Bogaerts led off with a slow roller to third base that got him an infield single, and Jackson Merrill walked. David Peralta followed with a strikeout before Ha-Seong Kim walked to load the bases.

Kyle Higashioka then sent a ground ball to Pirates second baseman Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who flipped the ball to shortstop Oneil Cruz, who fired a throw wide of first baseman Rowdy Tellez.

That allowed not only Bogaerts to score but also Merrill to race home and flip the lead, 6-5 in the Padres’ favor.

“It was almost the worst thing you could do,” Higashioka said of his grounder. “But then it turned out to be really good.”

The Padres catcher, who is not fast, broke out of the box quickly and hustled down the line. It did appear Cruz’s throw beat him. But Higashioka made it close enough that the Padres would have at least challenged an out call.

“I know as long as I beat the throw that at least you score one and we tie,” he said. “So it’s like, gotta try to get there.”

Higashioka did some more crucial running, stealing second without drawing a throw and scoring what ended up being the deciding run on Luis Arraez’s double.

That ended the outing for Pirates closer David Bednar, against whom the Padres came back twice in two days.

The Pirates scored a two-out run off Robert Suarez in the ninth before he closed out his 25th save.

The Padres have won 14 of their past 16 games for just the seventh time in franchise history.

Thursday’s improbable victory — which saw them go from up 4-0 to down 5-4 to their 28th comeback victory — completed the Padres’ fifth sweep of the season. All of those sweeps have come in their past 16 series after they had none in their first 23 series.

This one was unlike any before it.

Tuesday’s rain delay and Wednesday’s 10-inning madness made even the Padres blowing a lead as big as four runs for just the second time this season and then winning anyway seem somewhat dull.

The Padres tried to ride an early four-run lead for the duration on Thursday, but their thin and tired bullpen crashed, as the Pirates scored five runs between the sixth and seventh innings.

It was not entirely surprising that such a thing would happen.

The Padres used six relievers to cover five innings Wednesday and four relievers to cover eight innings on Tuesday.

“We just had to get to the end,” manager Mike Shildt said. “I mean, we had five (relievers) down.”

An attempt to alleviate their lack of available arms did not end up helping.

Journeyman right-hander Carl Edwards Jr., called up from Triple-A on Thursday morning, relieved starting pitcher Randy Vásquez with two outs and runners at the corners in the sixth inning and allowed both runners to score before leaving without recording an out.

Yuki Matsui came in, and the inning ended when Manny Machado ran up to field a dribbler by Kiner-Falefa and make a quick throw to first to preserve the Padres’ 4-3 lead.

Matsui then surrendered a one-out single to Oneil Cruz and Joey Bart’s two-run homer that made it 5-4 in the seventh inning.

A pair of two-run homers had given the Padres their 4-0 lead after two innings.

The first of the blasts was Manny Machado’s line drive to the seats beyond left field, which followed Jurickson Profar being hit by a pitch in the right leg for the second time in two days.

The second home run was a high fly ball by David Peralta that sailed out of the ballpark and almost bounced into the Allegheny River following Merrill’s single leading off the second inning.

Vásquez effectively cruised through the first five innings, allowing four base runners in the first three innings before retiring nine straight.

But Pirates starter Luis Ortiz also settled into the game, and no Padres batter reached base between Peralta’s homer and a one-out walk by Higashioka in the fifth inning.

Ortiz would finish six innings, and the bottom of the sixth is when Vásquez’s command waned and the Pirates drove him from the game with four singles in the first five batters.

He departed with a 4-1 lead before the bullpen crumbled and it seemed the Padres were not going to have enough to win their fifth consecutive game.

But Matsui finished the seventh, and Jason Adam pitched a scoreless eighth to get the Padres to the fateful ninth down by a run.

And the Pirates continued to play like a late-season fade is upon them.

They were a game above .500 when the series began. At 56-58, they remain on the fringes of the playoff picture, four  games back in the race for the National League’s third wild-card spot.

The Pirates appear to be on the rise with some good young players, including two starting pitchers the Padres missed this series.

But the hosts made key mistakes in all three games.

It would be wrong to say the Padres (64-52) did not earn their way to a season-high 12 games above .500 on Thursday. It would be accurate to say they were afforded an opportunity and took advantage.

“It takes some luck, not gonna lie,” Machado said. “But we’ve got to continue to create opportunities, and we do it in those situations where it’s called for. Ninth inning, you got to get some guys on. … First guy gets on, Bogey, and Jackson comes up, gets a walk. Now we’ve got got three opportunities to bring them in. That’s huge. That’s all it takes to score a run. And we ended up getting three that inning. It’s just creating opportunities.”

Padres' Reflect On Almost Perfect Road Trip

They almost had it, but the San Diego Padres came up just short of a perfect road trip with a 7-6 loss to the Miami Marlins.

After coming back from a 5-0 deficit, the Padres saw themselves in the ninth inning down by a single point. With two outs left, Ha-Seong Kim slammed the ball off of the top padding of the left field wall, where it proceeded to bounce off left fielder Kyle Stowers' glove, and over the wall.

Initially deemed a home run, the MLB replay center changed the call to a ground-rule double. Kim made his return to second, and the game was over soon after that.

“I think they got it right, whether I agree with the rule or don’t agree with the rule,” said Padres manager Mike Shildt, per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune . “It’s a tough place for the timing of it. The ball went over the fence, didn’t touch the ground, feels like a home run. But rule tells you differently. But what an effort from the group. Another grit-squad performance.”

Despite this upsetting loss, the Padres clubhouse is in bright spirits overall. San Diego won its last seven games in a row, five of which were on the road. If they had beaten the Marlins , it would have been the perfect road trip.

Still, five out of six isn't bad!

“It’s a very good trip,” pinch-hitter Donovan Solano said. “We tried, and everybody sees it. This is baseball. In baseball, inches, they can change everything.”

Manny Machado echoed the sentiment. “It’s great,” he said. “How we’re playing right now, we’re gonna continue to play that way. We never feel like we’re out of it.”

Currently, the Padres are holding onto the second wild-card spot in the National League. In the National League West, they are tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for second place. The Los Angeles Dodgers lead the division by 3.5 games.

Still, if there's a team that can catch up with the Dodgers and steal the NL West, it's this Padres team.

“… And this is what makes me so pleased with this club, the trait of this club," Shildt said, "Irrespective of circumstance, score, road, home, day, night, hot, cold, they’re going to compete, and they’re going to give us what they’ve got, and that’s plenty. So it was a heck of an effort, man. Hats off to the group for the way they competed today.”

Tomorrow, the Padres come back home to face the Pirates at 6:40 p.m. PT.
