Hurtigruten - Life on Board

On this page you will find the answers to the questions most commonly asked about the hurtigruten coastal voyage and the travel arrangements. our sales consultants will be happy to answer any questions you may have., cabin numbers.

If you book a Classic Round Voyage or a suite on a Select or Platinum fare option , you will usually be able to choose your cabin number free of charge when you make your booking, subject to availability. For other voyages 5 nights or longer, you may have the option to choose your cabin number for a fee, subject to availability. For all shorter voyages, or if you choose not to pay the supplement to choose your cabin, your cabin number will be allocated on embarkation.

Norwegian currency is used on board. Most major currencies may be exchanged. Visa, American Express, Master Card and Diners Card are all accepted, although the card must be valid for 3 months after the end of your voyage. A cruise card will be used for payment for extras on most ships and settled at the end of your voyage. On board MS Lofoten and MS Nordstjernen currently only Visa and Mastercard are accepted. This is subject to change.

Entertainment

The emphasis on board Hurtigruten ships is on relaxation and getting away from the commercial entertainment which is so often a part of conventional cruises. The aim is to get closer to unique environments and share the experience with fellow passengers. Occasionally some musical entertainment on some stretches of the voyage may be offered but there is no organised programme.

The Theme voyages will be accompanied by lecturers as described.

Information

There will be an information meeting on board on the evening of departure from Bergen and Kirkenes. You will also receive an information pack. In addition, a Daily Bulletin will keep you informed during your journey.

All Hurtigruten ships, except MS Lofoten, offer an internet café on board. In most harbours, mobile/cellular networks (3G) are available if bringing your own PC and a mobile access subscription. There are wireless networks in most public areas to connect laptops, mobile phones, etc. (Complimentary on Select and Platinum fares ) Beware that the bandwidth on board is narrow and reception intermittent.

Laundry rooms with washing machines, tumble dryers and irons are available on most ships. Tokens can be purchased at reception. On board MS Lofoten and MS Nordstjernen, arrangements for laundry can be made with the crew.

Dietary Requests

Special diets, e.g. vegetarian food, can be catered for if requested in good time. Passengers on very strict diets, e.g. vegans, may find that the food offers limited variety.

After embarkation passengers are requested to go to the restaurant to make their table reservation for the voyage. Each Hurtigruten ship has a slightly different practice with regard to meal times. The usual meal times are:

  • Breakfast from 07:30 to 10:00 hours (open sitting).
  • Lunch from 12:00 to 13:00 hours (open sitting).
  • Dinner from 18:30 hours (set sitting).

During the high season, there may be several sittings for dinner. Your sitting will normally be allocated on your first evening with the times of the sittings shown on board. Full board starts with a buffet dinner on the evening of departure from Bergen and ends with a brunch on the arrival day back in Bergen.

The food on board is Norwegian and breakfast is buffet style with a plentiful selection of cold meats, cheese, eggs, bacon as well as cereals, fruit and freshly baked bread. Lunch is the famous 'Cold Table' with a tempting selection of marinated herring dishes, smoked fish, poached fish, cold meats, salads, some hot dishes, as well as desserts and fruit.

Dinner is a three course set meal, where the main course is either meat or fish, generally served with potatoes and vegetables. There is not usually a choice of meal. On occasion, the 'Cold Table' may be served in the evening and the set meal at lunch time.

All Hurtigruten Ships are fully licensed. As the ships sail in Norwegian territorial waters, the prices on board are the same as in Norway.

Luggage handling is not included in the cost of your holiday.

To help you plan your holiday, the following table shows average sample prices for some items available on board. Please note that the prices shown are approximate only and based on the latest information available to us.

There is a shop on board all but the traditional ships. They sell souvenirs, knitwear, books, postcards, postage stamps and a limited supply of toiletries. On MS Lofoten and MS Nordstjernen this service is handled by the coffee shop.

Shore Excursions

Pre-booking excursions, whenever possible is recommended as only remaining places will be sold on board. Excursions booked on board will be payable in Norwegian Kroner and prices may vary from those shown on this web site as a result of currency exchange rates, or local changes. It is not possible to pre-book within 14 days of departure. Excursions and their content are subject to maximum/minimum numbers and local weather conditions.

Smoking is not permitted in cabins or in public areas. It is allowed on open deck but prohibited at all times when the ships are in port. There is currently a smoking room on MS Midnatsol, MS Troll fjord and MS Vesterålen which will be closed whilst in port.

Stabilisers

With the exception of MS Nordstjernen and MS Lofoten, all the ships are fully stabilised. However, it is worth noting that the ships enter the open sea on only a few occasions during the whole voyage. These stretches in the open sea last only a few hours. The majority of the time the ship sails between mainland Norway and the coastal islands, where the sea is generally quite calm.

Tea / Coffee

Only the suites on the three newest ships have tea / coffee making facilities. Standard cabins do not offer this facility, however, tea and coffee can be purchased on board around the clock or if you are on Select or Platinum fare options, it is complimentary.

All ships have pay phones, and phone cards can be purchased from reception. Private mobile telephones may be used on board. note that the telephone and mobile reception may vary depending on the area of travel.

Hurtigruten has a non-tipping policy. However, if you feel that crew members should be rewarded for providing exceptional service this is entirely at your discretion.

Cabins are not equipped with a safety deposit box. However, jewellery, money, and other valuables can be handed in at reception for safe-keeping in the ship's safe. Hurtigruten Ltd cannot accept responsibility for the loss of valuables.

This is 220 volts A. C. You will require a continental 2-pin adaptor. Hair dryers are provided in all cabins except on board MS Lofoten, MS Nordstjernen and some cabins on MS Vesterålen.

What To Wear

On board Hurtigruten's ships dress is informal. Although some passengers choose to change for dinner, it is 'smart / casual' rather than formal. The weather in most of the destinations can vary during the course of each voyage or even during the day. To cater for these variations we recommend the layered dress approach that enables you to adapt to changes in temperature, wind and precipitation conditions easily.

For all voyages we advise you to take breathable rain and windproof clothing. A warm hat, gloves, scarf and thermal clothing can be useful, together with thermal underwear, during the winter months. On land where it may be icy, sturdy shoes are important for shore excursions and a walking/trekking pole may be useful. You should pack a pair of UV protective sunglasses, even during winter as the reflections of snow and ice can be harmful to the unprotected eye. An additional list of recommended clothing and equipment is sent out on selected departures. Many ships offer a jacuzzi on board, so take a swim suit.

Where necessary, excursions include use of appropriate clothing.

Working Ships

Hurtigruten ships function as working ships calling at ports around the clock. You can expect some noise and vibration in a few of the cabins during loading of goods. This varies depending on the location of your cabin and the type of ship. Also, noise affects people differently and what may be a problem for one person may not be a problem for others. Please ask our sales consultants for advice on the best cabin location for you.

What is the Ship Manifest Information Form why do I need to fill it in?

The Ship Manifest Information Form (SMIF) is necessary for immigration offices, flight tickets, and customs - and needs to be completed across all our Expedition Cruises and Ships. The form needs to be completed by all guests who are joining us onboard.

How to complete the form?

You can complete the form online, by clicking the link below.

You will need your Booking ID, Passport Details Etc.

Once you have completed the form, please return it to us as soon as possible and no later than 8 weeks prior to your voyage departure.

To start filling in your Ship Manifest Information Form, please click here .

Why do I need to complete a Medical Screening Form?

At Hurtigruten Expeditions - we explore some of the world's most remote locations and as such, in many of these locations, sophisticated medical services are few and far between. Medical care at sea is limited, and often emergency sea and air services may also be inaccessible, particularly in the polar regions. It is therefore vital that you make us aware of any current or past health issues, and as such we require a Medical Screening Form to be completed for Expeditions to Antarctica.

The Health, Safety and well-being of you our guests and our on-board crew are our top priority, and we want to ensure that all our guests are fit for travel. On board all our ships, we will have a qualified physician, which have a small, limited medical facility with basic medical supplies and equipment. Still, that makes it more difficult to diagnose and treat even the simplest conditions. This often leads to missed diagnoses, worsening conditions, a greater burden of chronic disease, and in some cases, unnecessary costly medical disembarkations.

Who is screening my submitted forms?

To minimise the risks to your health, we have partnered with Vikand Medical who has a dedicated medical screening team consisting of maritime medical professionals. They can better evaluate the risks sea travel can have on someone's health.

When can I submit the Medical Screening Form?

We ask all guests (including children) to complete and submit the signed medical forms 4-8 weeks before the booked departure date. This is to ensure our partners at Vikand Medical, have enough time to review and screen all forms, before departure.

You can submit your medical form before 8 weeks from departure - however, if you do so, you might need to wait longer to hear about your screening results. Also, please bear in mind that doctor's signatures are valid for 6 months and if there are any changes in your medical condition closer to the sailing date, we need to be informed and you might need to re-submit the forms (e.g. recent falls, traffic accidents).

What information do I need to have ready before starting to fill in my Medical Screening Form?

To thoroughly evaluate your health and fitness for the expedition to Antarctica, we will ask for information about several areas. Please have the following information ready to complete the Medical Screening Form:

Travel insurance details (please ensure it covers repatriation)

Details of chronic medical conditions

Details of major surgeries performed in the past five years

Details of major physical trauma or falls within the past six months

Details of life-threatening allergies

List of medications you take and dosages

If you are pregnant, please provide the number of weeks you will be at the end of the voyage. Note: You are not permitted to board if you will be 24 weeks pregnant or more at the end of your voyage.

How do I complete the Medical Screening Form?

We require all guests (including children) to submit and complete the Medical Form prior to departure to Antarctica.

All forms consist of two sections - Guest section and Doctor's section. Both sections need to be filled in and signed. If your own doctor refuses to sign the form, please contact an alternative doctor, or use online doctor services to fill in the form. Vikand Medical is offering a digital appointment service to support the Medical Screening Form process. This appointment can be booked through Vikand portal

Please note: We only accept the Medical Screening Form available through Vikand portal and has been specially designed for Hurtigruten sailings to remote destinations.

Who can fill in and sign the Doctor's Section?

The Doctor's section of the medical form can be filled out by a Doctor and by a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) or Physician’s Assistant (PA).

People who can NOT fill out a Medical Screening Form:

Nurse Practitioner

Advance Nurse Practitioner/ Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Nurse (RN or RNA)

Or any other medical-related professional who does not have a doctor's certificate/ licence.

You cannot fill in and sign the Doctor’s Section yourself, even if you are a licenced doctor. Another licenced doctor must complete it.

Why do we direct all passengers to online forms?

We have launched the online forms to better protect your sensitive medical information. This is also why the medical details are only visible to Vikand's dedicated medical screening team consisting of medical professionals.

What is the Submission ID? And why do I need it?

When you submit the Medical Form, you will receive a Submission ID - which is your form's tracking ID. When uploading the Doctor's section of your medical form, or when using Vikand's digital appointment service, it is important that you use this ID to ensure both sections of the Medical Screening form are linked together.

Please Note: If you don't use the Submission ID, this can delay the process and approval of your Medical Screening Form.

How do I know my Medical Form has been submitted?

Upon submitting your Medical Screening Form, you will receive an e-mail confirmation to the e-mail included within your submission form - please also check Spam / Junk Folders as they could appear here. If you still haven't received any confirmation within an hour of submitting your form, please contact Hurtigruten Customer Service, and we can get a confirmation e-mail sent to you.

When do I get results of my submitted forms?

If you have submitted your Medical Form within 4-8 weeks from departure, you should expect to receive the results within 3 working days (if submitted more than 8 weeks out, it might take longer for results to come through). If the screening team has a doubt in the passenger's safety to join the Expedition sailing to a remote destination, an additional week might be needed to get a second opinion.

What happens if I don't complete the Medical Screening Form?

We require all guests (including children) who have booked onto a HX Hurtigruten Expedition, to have an approved Medical Screening Form before boarding the ship.

We don't send out any travel documentation before the forms are approved.

Do children need to fill in Medical Screening Form?

We require all guests (including children) to submit and complete the Medical Screening Form prior to departure.

Please Note: The minimum age for sailings to Antarctica & South Georgia is 5 years old

How much does an appointment with a Vikand Doctor Cost? How do I pay it?

The cost for an appointment with Vikand's online doctor is 165 EUR, which is to be made payable at the time of booking - Vikand accepts both Visa and Mastercard.

In case of cancellation within 24 hours from the booked time or no-show, there is a service fee of 50 EUR which is non-refundable.

Do I need to download any app to attend digital appointment with Vikand doctor?

No, you do not. Once you have made your appointment booking, you will receive a confirmation e-mail, that will include all the details including a there will be a link to the online meeting room. Here, you will meet with one of Vikand's doctors for your digital appointment.

Please Note: Check your computer's/smartphone's audio and video settings before the call to make sure you can both hear and see each other during the appointment.

  • Expeditions and Excursions

What happen's if there are changes to my itinerary?

Every expedition cruise is unique. All routes and excursions are provisional and subject to change due to weather, sea, and/or ice conditions, amongst other factors that can cause our itineraries to change without prior notice. These decisions are taken with guest safety in mind.

In the event this happens whilst we are at sea, we will inform guests as soon as possible with the updates regarding the alternative route and change of plan. If we need to cancel a port of call, we will aim to substitute this with an equal or better alternative.

Please Note: Hurtigruten Expeditions reserves the right to change the itinerary and the content of excursions without prior notice ( see terms and conditions ).

What should I pack for my Expedition cruise?

From the frozen Antarctic to the temperate Galapagos Islands and West Africa - the climate and conditions vary between the various destinations we explore. Regardless of the destination you visit, we recommend you bring suitable footwear for both wet and dry landings.

It's possible to borrow boots, trekking poles, and other bits of equipment depending on the destination you travel to. To help you pack accordingly, we have pulled together a list of recommendations for each destination, covering what to pack .

Must I bring my own boots?

On many of our expedition cruises, we are landing in areas covered with snow. The terrain might be muddy, uneven, wet, and very slippery. The weather may be inclement and cold. This is part of being an explorer.

For settlement landings in Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, Norway, and other locations it is highly recommended to bring your own proper sturdy footwear. In Antarctica, South Georgia, and Svalbard, it is mandatory to use rubber boots for all landings as well as on nature landings in Arctic Canada, Greenland, and Iceland. In sailing areas where boots are mandatory for landings, they will be provided on board during your expedition free of charge. Boots are rinsed and declared clean from seeds and other biological material after every landing. This is to avoid unintentionally spreading invasive species into fragile environments. We carry sizes from 32 to 50. If you need a smaller or larger size than this or prefer to wear your own boots, you are welcome to bring private rubber boots, but please be advised that our Expedition Team will have them checked before going ashore, to make sure they are suitable for landing.

We also provide walking sticks on board. If you are more comfortable using your own walking sticks, bring them along with you, but bear in mind that they must be properly cleaned and disinfected after every landing.

Do you run pre and post programmes?

Hurtigruten offers a choice of optional Pre- and Post-Programmes that can be added to your Hurtigruten journey. This can be a half or full-day excursion or an overnight tour.

Please note programmes are subject to change, and a minimum number of participants applies. For guests who are not fully mobile, Pre- and Post-Programmes are on request.

Explore Pre and Post Programmes here

Do you offer excursions throughout the expedition?

We offer a rich and varied programme of included and optional shore excursions run by third-party providers in many areas we sail to. In many ports, we offer an included excursion, which can be reserved for no additional charge. In some cases, the included excursion can be combined with other optional excursions in the port. Most excursions can be pre-booked, but may also be bookable onboard if capacity remains.

We advise that you book well in advance in order to avoid disappointment due to the excursion being fully booked. Please note that registration is binding, and once on board the Expedition Team will advise you of booking deadlines for excursions still available. Our excursions have English-speaking guides unless otherwise indicated and other languages cannot be guaranteed unless specified. Excursions are subject to change and possible cancellation due to weather conditions. They are also dependent on the number of participants.

In addition, the Expedition Team also arrange a variety of activities during the cruise. These will depend on location and season but may include hiking, snowshoeing, and kayaking. These activities are booked on board and subject to availability.

Specifically for guests onboard Santa Cruz II - We offer every day, in addition to the core activity (generally, nature walks, a variety of activity options approved by the national park: Snorkeling, Kayaking, Paddleboarding, Coastal explorations (aboard our inflatable dinghies, otherwise known as  pangas ), Glass-bottom boat rides, Biking (on Santa Cruz Island only).

Explore available excursions

Where can I find the excursions available for my voyage?

We offer a varied program of optional and included shore excursions throughout our expeditions. In many ports, we try to offer an included excursion, which can be reserved for no additional charge. In some cases, the included excursion can be combined with other optional excursions in the port. Most excursions can be pre-booked, but may also be bookable onboard if capacity remains. To review the range of excursions we have on offer, please visit the ' Enhance Your Cruise ' section of the website - here, you will be able to search the catalog by destination/cruise/activity level. In addition to this, within the Voyage page, you will find a list of the excursions (included & optional) that are available for that particular sailing.

Which ships have children’s playrooms?

No Hurtigruten Expedition ships feature children’s playrooms.

How do the landings operate?

Depending on the destination you are exploring with us we have various options to get ashore. The first option is to go alongside (docked in port) with the ship and guests can leave via the gangway. In places where we anchor we use our stable expedition boats for both water-based exploration and safe landings in otherwise inaccessible areas. You will need to be fairly agile to board these, but there is otherwise no need to worry about travelling in them.

The crew will show you what to do and as long as you follow their instructions, after a few times, it will become second nature. On all landings in expedition boats, guests are expected to wear proper footwear. For additional information about the footwear, see the separate point “Equipment loans”.

Please Note: Landing operations depend on favourable conditions.

I want to find inspiration for my next voyage with Hurtigruten?

We have many ways to inspire your next trip with us, including a range of brochures covering all our destinations that are available to 'read online / order here '.

If you are looking for more inspiration on a specific topic, please check out the various inspirational stories section of the website.

Please Note: Information included within the brochure was correct at the time of printing.

Will I see the Northern Lights on Expedition cruises?

The Northern Lights mainly occur during the darker winter months (October - February), however, they have been seen as early as August and late as April in certain areas. The best place to experience the Aurora Borealis is around 60 - 75 degrees latitude, also known as the Aurora Zone which covers the northern parts of Canada, Norway, Svalbard, Northwest Passage, Iceland, and Greenland.

We do have a number of ships that sail around through the aurora zone - but due to the time of year they sail these waters, we can’t guarantee there will be sightings of the Northern Lights. However, we do offer the following specific Northern Lights Expedition:

Ultimate Norway - Expedition Under the Northern Lights

These expeditions are covered by our Northern Lights Promise .

Additionally, we have some excursions that focus on the Northern Lights, however, this ship usually is the best place to spot them as there are no lights around it.

For more information on the Northern Lights including the answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions and the all-important how to photograph the ultimate polar light show. Check out the article here.

Why am I not getting separate flight tickets?

Your flight tickets are electronic; you may check-in by showing your passport to the agent at the check-in counter.

When will the daily programme be released?

The daily programme is shown on the information screens around the ship and on the TV in your cabin, with each day’s port calls, landings, lectures, meals, and activities on board. All our published plans are subject to change. You will receive the daily program with information about your next day the evening before. The timings of publication may vary due to ongoing operations on board - true expedition style.

For easy access to daily updates on board, we recommend using the Hurtigruten onboard app. For more information about the Hurtigruten app, please see here .

For guests onboard Santa Cruz II, each evening the expedition leader and his/her team hold a briefing regarding the next day's activities. The briefing is usually preceded by an “Eco Moment” – a short talk on a topic relevant to the Galapagos Islands and the activities and observations that day. The programme is also displayed on screens in various visible areas of the vessel and in the “Explorer” app.

In addition, one or more lectures will be given by expedition staff to enhance guest understanding of the Galapagos Islands and their history.

Expedition staff will also run sessions on various Citizen Science projects we are involved in onboard.

  • Facilities and Services

Can I use my mobile phone / WiFi work onboard all ships?

We offer Wi-Fi on board, but on expedition cruises to remote destinations, coverage and speed will be very limited. Do I need my own equipment or can I borrow whilst onboard?

For settlement landings in Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, Norway, and other locations it is highly recommended to bring your own proper sturdy footwear. In Antarctica, South Georgia, and Svalbard, it is mandatory to use rubber boots for all landings as well as on nature landings in Arctic Canada, Greenland, and Iceland. In sailing areas where boots are mandatory for landings, they will be provided on board during your expedition free of charge.

Boots are rinsed and declared clean from seeds and other biological material after every landing to avoid unintentionally spreading invasive species into fragile environments. We carry sizes from 32 to 50. If you need a smaller or larger size than this or prefer to wear your own boots, you are welcome to bring private rubber boots, but please be advised that our Expedition Team will have them checked before going ashore, to make sure they are suitable for landing.

We also lend out walking sticks on board. If you are more comfortable using your own walking sticks, bring them along with you, but bear in mind that they must be properly cleaned and disinfected after every landing.

For those guests onboard Santa Cruz II equipment includes sit-on-top kayaks, paddle boards, a glass bottom boat, and snorkeling gear (mesh bags, masks, fins, tubes, and buoyancy vests). The use of all these is free of charge. These activities are regulated by the National Park and must always be under the supervision of a licensed naturalist guide.

Guests must attend a short safety briefing before these activities are held. Safety briefings and release documents are mandatory for participation in these activities.

Wetsuits are available in all sizes, from XXS to XXL.

All gear provided by the ship is cleaned and disinfected under the medical officer´s supervision. A brand-new mouthpiece is given to each snorkeler when using the ship´s gear.

Do you have a library onboard?

The ships have a selection of books on different topics that are available to guests while on board.

Onboard Santa Cruz II , our Natural History Library with a 24/7 coffee and tea station is located on the Expedition Lounge in the Expedition Deck. Please check with the naturalists for books to read during the voyage. After reading, guests are kindly requested to please return the books to the library. A selection of general subject books and natural history books are found, but for anything related to the Natural History of Galápagos, please ask the Expedition Leader for advice.

Within the Expedition Lounge is located our Science Corner. There we have a high-quality microscope set up for viewing various samples. We also have life-like replicas of skulls and bones from various wildlife species as well as replica bird eggs. Our expedition staff will run Science Corners during the voyage to help guests learn about the natural world around them and the Galapagos Islands in particular.

  • Booking and pricing

I am not able to reach you via phone; what do I do?

Apologies if you are not able to contact us via phone. The alternatives are to email us and request a call back at  [email protected] , or book your voyage online.

How can I book excursions?

There are a few ways to book excursions for your upcoming expedition. If you want to book excursions before joining the ship, this can be done over the phone by contacting the Customer Service Center either at the time of booking or anytime up to four weeks before departure. Before joining your sailing, we recommend downloading the Hurtigruten Onboard App. This is the best way to keep up to date with everything going on, whilst onboard. You can also use the app for booking excursions on board - by exploring all excursions that are still available. We advise that you book well in advance to avoid disappointment due to some excursions becoming fully booked. When you join your sailing, you can visit the Expedition Desk onboard your ship, and the team will be able to help answer any questions about the planned excursions and activities.

What is flexible pricing?

Similar to that of an airline we run flexible pricing, where all prices are capacity-controlled and subject to availability. The applicable price will be quoted at the time of booking, but the prices may change at any time before the departure date. If booking through our Customer Service Center, you have the opportunity to hold a booking for 7 days with an initial non-refundable 25% payment. For more information on this, see the 'Can I set up a deposit?' question.

Why am I getting a higher price than the ’from price’ online?

The “from price” reflects the lowest available per-person fare, based on double occupancy, across all available departure dates of the chosen itinerary. The “from price” fare may not be available on your chosen departure date when there are multiple departures of your chosen itinerary. Occasionally the “from price” may reflect the price of a cabin that has recently sold and has not yet been updated by our system to reflect a new “from price”. Prices may change at any time and are based on cabin availability and occupancy. Applicable price will be quoted at the time of booking creation.

Why do I need to pay a single supplement if I am traveling alone?

The voyage prices you see across the website and brochures are based on two people travelling together and sharing a cabin. Solo travellers may be required to pay an additional fee known as a Single Supplement, which can vary depending on the cabin selected or destination. However, we understand that in the true spirit of exploration - some guests like to travel solo. So we occasionally remove this additional Single Supplement fee across selected departures, voyages and destinations. This list of departures is often changing, so for the latest information, please visit the Solo Traveller page to start planning your next expedition.

Are there any special rates for children?

Our special child rate is valid for new bookings on all Expedition Cruises and is subject to change at any time. When the child occupies a cabin with at least two adults, a 50% savings applies to the cruise portion of the child’s package only. When the child occupies a cabin with one adult, a 20% savings applies to the cruise portion of the child’s package only. A 20% savings applies to the non-cruise portions of a package, where applicable, regardless of cabin occupancy. A child is defined as 2 through 15 years of age at the time of sailing. This offer is bookable online or by phone and is combinable with all current offers.

Please note:

- Participation of children under the age of 12 years in small-boat landings during expedition cruises is at the discretion of the captain.

- In accordance with International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators guidelines, the minimum age for travel to Antarctica is 5 years.

- Minimum age for Galapagos is 6 years.

Can I book my excursions onboard?

Yes, you can! When you join your sailing, visit the Expedition Desk onboard your ship, and the team will be able to advise on all the Excursions available. For booking excursions on board, download the Hurtigruten App and explore all excursions that are still available. We advise that you book well in advance in order to avoid disappointment due to some excursions becoming fully booked.

Our excursions have English-speaking guides unless otherwise indicated and other languages cannot be guaranteed unless specified. Excursions are subject to change and/or possible cancellation due to weather conditions. Some excursions are also dependent on the number of participants.

Please note: Registration is binding, and once on board the Expedition Team will advise you of booking deadlines for excursions still available.

Please Note: Officers and Expedition Team are not included in this breakdown.

  • Accessibility, Health & Safety (inc Covid-19)

Do you take measures to protect wildlife from Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)?

Our expert team of itinerary planners and expedition leaders continue to closely monitor Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

Across the globe, we actively collaborate closely with the wider scientific community and industry bodies to safeguard and study the diverse ecosystems we visit. Furthermore, we operate enhanced biosecurity procedures where HPAI has been detected.

Should landing sites be closed on short notice to prevent the transmission of HPAI between wildlife colonies, our Expedition Team will have alternative sites or activities planned. We ensure that any material changes to an itinerary are communicated to our guests as far in advance as possible.

For more information, please visit the Health & Safety section of the Help Center.

Are your ships wheelchair accessible?

Yes, our ships are wheelchair accessible, with some operational requirements. Guests who use wheelchairs are required to bring their own. To ensure ease of movement on the ship, wheelchairs and mobility aids must be no wider than 60cm.

All mobility or medical equipment brought on board must be capable of being carried safely and must be declared before sailing. To ensure that all guests can be safely evacuated during an emergency, guests that require the use of a wheelchair can only be accommodated in accessible cabins.

All guests will be instructed in safety procedures and the use and location of the safety equipment before departure. There is a Safety Notice posted on the inside of the cabin door which we encourage all guests to read carefully.

Santa Cruz II complies with the Galapagos Biocontrol Agency (ABG) AND ISPS (International Ship and Port Security System) regulations, where all luggage is subject to X-ray/metal and organic/biosecurity inspection prior to boarding the aircraft in mainland Ecuador. These inspections include carry-on screening before and after the Ecuador-Galapagos flight.

All guests must have personal travel/health insurance.

If you depend on medication, remember to bring sufficient supplies to last through any unforeseen delays. We also recommend that you keep your medication in your hand luggage, properly labelled, and with clear instructions for its use. If you depend on vital medication, please inform the ship’s doctor upon arrival.

Illness on board can lead to quarantine, and orders from the ship’s physician and captain must be followed.

How safe is it to move around the ship?

We kindly remind you to take care when walking on board the ship while at sea, especially when venturing out on deck, observing the signs for warnings of wet and slippery decks. Be aware the doors toward the outer deck are potentially dangerous in windy conditions.

Please adhere to the signs and announcements when it is not advised to go outside. While walking inside, hold on to railings but not to door frames, to avoid injury.

For those guests on Santa Cruz II - In addition to the above, there are no elevators on the ship. Stairs are steep and guests should take extra care when moving between decks. Hold the hand rail!

They use SpaceX connection.  WiFi is free and reliable.  Limit is to things like cloud storage and video streaming, we succesfuly used for a video conference from Antartica last year, so no issues for message/phone calls.

Really, even in Groenland ? In fjord without any village, it will work every days ?

We were on the Nansen in Antarctica... WiFi worked for us everyday.  There is nothing there - no villages - and we had reliable WiFi all the time.

Thank you all for your answer ! 😀

I don't watch a lot of TV when on a cruise, but do use TV to fall asleep most nights... I don't remember not having TV other than the lectures, so there must have been.

Did you not approach Guest Services?

Most ships have canned movies and TV series.

Guest services told us that it due to our location that we have nothing.  I have been on other ships that did have “something “.  We had tech guys as well.  They all just shrugged and said “that’s the way it is here “.  We don’t believe them.  We think there is a problem that they do not want to admit to.   We can finally get some canned movies but still nothing more.   We could not even get the map to work at first, but can finally see that

Can you get live TV in your cabin?   Can you view Panomax camera?   I can view on my phone but not on TV screen (just dark black screen)

we can finally view some movies and the map but nothing more

We can finally view most things on TV (ship webcam appears to be the only thing we cannot, but can still view on phone)

finally can see “live tv” and movies.  We are halfway to Greenland, so whatever the problem was, appears to be fixed mostly

I normally use tv to help fall asleep.  Maybe I will sleep tonight 😁

Yes I had all but the map I see in my phone.

Internet fees? And drinking in room?

By Smbruner , January 11, 2016 in Hurtigruten

We will be on the Midnatsol January 29 for the 11 day Norway Coastal and I'm wondering about internet fees onboard. Anyone know?

Also, we are in a suite and I saw from pictures that we have glasses for drinks as well as a refrigerator in our room. So, wouldn't we be able to have cocktails or wine in our room? I understand there is no room service. I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this or not.

Thank you for any information. Getting quite excited.

There is free wifi available in the public spaces (lounges, bar...) on all ships. Depending on the ship and the time of day it can be slow but it is usually adequate for regular use (check email, look at online newspaper or weather forecast or social media). On board MS Lofoten, MS Polarlys and MS Nordlys it was good enough for me to upload my travelblog daily. No fees for that.

I don't know about room service in suites but you can drink in your cabin all you want. You can bring your own bottles on board as long as you don't drink them in the public spaces (and in the restaurant of course). I have traveled in regular cabins (not suite) and I have always brought a bottle to drink before dinner.

I have always brought a bottle to drink before dinner.

A bottle, before dinner???

We have traveled in a suite on the Midnatsol and Trollfjord. On our last trip we could access wifi from our suite.(It is free on the ship). Wine glasses were supplied in the room. We bought wine before we boarded at the Vinmonopolet in Bergen. There are stores all over Norway; it is the only place to purchase alcohol on Norway. (Vinmonopolet.no) Enjoy your voyage....I have been on the ships in all seasons, except winter.....it's on my bucket list!
A bottle, before dinner???   :-)

I knew there was no way I could get out of this sentence with my dignity intact! :p

Is there an English equivalent for the pre-meal ceremony we call "aperitif" in France? (which usually involves a bottle, several friends with glasses, and -optional- peanuts).

Another reason I like French! One word says everything...we might say:

"Come for cocktails" or "Come for a drink" or with my grandchildren,"Do you want snacks?

"Cocktails" would be more formal than"Drinks".......my opinion only. Anyone else?

RMLincoln

SL: I think the smile came from your unintended suggestion that you drank the whole bottle before dinner :) And we couldn't let it go by... just between cyber friends!

To Smbruner: On Midnatsol we had excellent WiFi in our room, no charge. We were mid-ship deck 4, near front service desk. As SL indicated, enjoy your own alcohol in your room but it is not allowed elsewhere on the ship (you will see several signs around the vessel). Otherwise drinks are available for purchase from the bar, wine in the dining room, not sure about mixed drinks in the dining room.

Have a fun voyage! m--

Yes I got that! ;) I started to write the sentence saying that I would bring a bottle on for "apéritif" in the cabin but then didn't know if there was any English for "apéritif"; and then I turned the sentence around several times but I knew it would came out bad (for my reputation).

Anyway, it is possible to drink in the cabin (even a whole bottle if you want, but maybe stay in the cabin afterwards for a bit :p).

But the English for 'apéritif' is 'apéritif'!

So, this is the info sent to me about alcohol on board. I had planned on picking up a bottle of baileys for my room. But after reading this I'm wondering if I can.

Alcohol policy

Due to strict laws surrounding alcohol in Norway, and for the safety of our guests, alcohol that has not been purchased on board may not be consumed in any public area of the ship or in your cabin. Guests may bring up to two unopened bottles (maximum 50 fl. oz. each) per person onboard, but guests will be required to check these at the reception desk, and they will be returned to guests at the end of their voyage.

Also the document states there IS a small fee for Internet. Any comments on this????

Yes, this is what the brochure says, but my experience is as stated above. The bags are not inspected at check-in (at least they were not until last Feb) and there was never an issue with bringing alcohol on board. Bring your bottle in your suitcase. Worst case scenario, they do scan the luggage, and you will be asked to check it in for the duration of the trip. Honestly, I don't think it will happen.

As for internet, maybe there is a fee to use the few computers with public access. But I had reliable free wifi on board MS Polarlys, MS Vesteraalen, MS Nordlys, and recently even aboard MS Lofoten.

Digitl : ah, that was actually easy! And it means the same? A friendly drink before meal?
Yes. It's surprising how many English words the French appropriate!
Maybe there is a difference re: wifi and bringing alcohol on board between the Explorer Voyages (Antartica, etc.) and the Coastal Voyages. We always had free wifi on the Coastal trips and no problem bringing wine on board (for consuming in the room). Anyone had recent experiences with this?

Or perhaps it's a difference between a long voyage or a shorter one, just like the meals are included on long voyages...but not on the shorter ones. I think I'll send an email and see what the company says..

Wi-fi has been free on the coastal ships we have travelled on and chargeable on Fram. We have never bothered to take our own alcohol on board on any of the ships so can't help on that.

Perhaps the difference is between what the brochure says and what happens in Real Life ™ ? I do know that coffee mugs don't always contain coffee...

I firmly believe this is what it comes down to, and there is probably no need to overthink this. I had no problem with bringing a bottle on board MS Fram either (most recent trip in 2013).

Free Wifi in both the public areas and cabins on the Trollfjord, but this was on a round trip coastal voyage last May. I purchased sodas ashore in several ports, and no one ever asked to look inside my bags, nor were my bags scanned. I could have been bringing in alcohol for all they knew. By the way, I was always able to get a glass of ice for free from the bar...

Just spotted info below on Hurtigruten UK website. looks like paid internet is being introduced, is it already current on ships referred to? I've never paid for internet access since 2005 on Trollfjord, Midnatsol, Lofoten or Kong Harald (& others).

"Improved Wi-Fi in 2016

Published 17/11/2015

Hurtigruten are trialing a new Wi-Fi system on board three ships from now until the end of December 2015. This is giving us the possibility to see if we can implement a brand new and improved Wi-Fi system across the fleet in 2016.

The three ships that are being trialled are MS Midnatsol, MS Trollfjord and MS Finnmarken and the prices are as follows:

There are two types of internet:

Standard (1Mbit speed for use in social media, email simple surfing, not for streaming)

Premium access – 5 Mbit broadband with 4 hrs active use

One day standard internet - 50 NOK

Three day standard internet - 125 NOK

Five day standard internet - 200 NOK

11 day standard internet 400 NOK

Premium internet is also available for 250 NOK for 4 hours active use. It will be sold in reception."

Fair Winds & Weather,

That seems reasonable. $45 for the 11 night trip.. Far less than mainstream cruise lines...

The new owners are certainly sweating the assets.

Janetcbl - since you have been in the suite on the Midnatsol perhaps you can answer another question for me. I knit and wanted to bring my knitting with me and wanted to know if there is adequate lighting in the room to knit. If not I can bring some kind of light with me. Thanks for letting me know. We leave Los Angeles a week from this Wednesday so I'm in a panic.

Smbruner, I am not a knitter, but I know I could read without extra light. We never sailed in winter, so that may make a difference. The suites are different in different categories; we had a sofa right next to the door to the balcony. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks for your quick reply, I think I will bring the one light that can go around my neck just to be safe. It will be interesting being in the dark a lot. If nothing else, I'll have to just wing it! Thanks again.
