Wrexham afc's summer tour: all the u.s. games from chapel hill to california, share this article.

America’s favorite Welsh soccer club is touring the U.S. this summer.

Wrexham AFC – the team co-owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and the subject of the FX docuseries “Welcome To Wrexham” – will play four matches on American soil in July.

The tour begins on July 19 at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Wrexham will face English Premier League giants Chelsea in a friendly. Tickets for that match are already sold out , and it’s the first time Kenan – home of the North Carolina Tar Heels football team – will host an international soccer match. If you were lucky enough to snag tickets, perhaps you can also catch Roy Williams and his wife Swag Surfin’ there .

Other tour stops include July 22 in Los Angeles against LA Galaxy II, July 25 in San Diego versus Manchester United, and July 28 in McElhenney’s hometown of Philadelphia against Philadelphia Union II.

Our full fixture list for this summer's tour has been confirmed! 🇺🇸 🔴⚪ #WxmAFC — Wrexham AFC (@Wrexham_AFC) June 12, 2023

At the end of its last campaign, Wrexham was promoted to the Football League after spending 15 seasons in the National League, the fifth tier of English soccer.

Reynolds and McElhenney purchased the club in 2020, and the team has seen its fanbase grow in the U.S. since the premiere of the FX docuseries — even Paul Rudd is a fan .

The co-owners have also been trying to recruit a star to the team, like Gareth Bale , but have been unsuccessful so far. Perhaps Inter Miami CF owner David Beckham can loan the club Lionel Messi for a match or two.

Wrexham AFC is a Welsh football team that has been the talk of the world in the last year.

That's mainly because of two things: they are owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and a few weeks ago they secured the dream win to secure the National League championship and automatic promotion to League Two, which has everyone at the club thrilled.

That will also allow them to have a different pre-season to what they have experienced in recent years with a tour of the United State,s where they will have the opportunity to take on local teams, but also two powerful Premier League clubs who will also be in the country as part of their pre-season tours.

Wrexham's trip to the United States will begin on July 19 and end on July 28, during which time they will play four matches: two against Chelsea and Manchester United , and also against the reserves of Los Angeles Galaxy and Philadelphia Union, as the first teams will be in contention for the Leagues Cup.

"We enjoy meeting fans who have travelled from the United States to visit us this season, and it will be a fantastic occasion to play against American opposition in front of more of these new fans," said coach Phil Parkinson in a statement announcing the summer tour.

Wrexham dates, venues and fixtures in the USA

19 July: Wrexham vs Chelsea - Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill, NC

July 22: Wrexham vs LA Galaxy II - Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, CA

July 25: Wrexham vs Manchester United - Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego, CA

28 July: Wrexham vs Philadelphia Union II - Subaru Park, Chester, PA

While the match against the Red Devils might be the most attractive in the history of the club that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought, the tickets that sold out were for the match against Chelsea.

After a stop in Cuba, 2 Russian ships dock in Venezuelan port as part of ‘show the flag’ exercises

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Two Russian naval ships docked Tuesday in the Venezuelan port of La Guaira after exercises in the Atlantic Ocean that Moscow said were to “show the flag” in remote, important regions, and an initial stopover in Cuba .

The frigate Admiral Gorshkov and the oil tanker Akademik Pashin are part of Russia’s Northern Fleet, which since May 17 has been carrying out tasks that include “guaranteeing the Russian naval presence” in “remote areas of the oceans,” Russian news agency Tass cited Russia’s Ministry of Defense as saying.

The stopover was to last several days and highlight the close ties between Moscow and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s government.

Like his predecessor, the late President Hugo Chávez, Maduro has forged a close relationship with Russia. The visit comes before Maduro seeks reelection in July 28 elections.

Venezuelan authorities have not reported the arrival of the Russian vessels, which could barely be seen from afar docked at La Guaira, but Associated Press journalists saw their crewmembers in the city’s historic center.

In mid-June, the Admiral Gosrhkov and the tanker were among the Russian vessels that docked in Havana, Cuba.

Image

The other vessels present at that stop included a nuclear-powered submarine , and they stayed docked there for five days following drills in the Atlantic Ocean. The exercise was seen by some as a show of strength by Moscow against the backdrop of tensions as U.S. and other Western nations support Kyiv in Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Wrexham youngsters in limbo as club’s academy upgrade delayed – so what next?

WREXHAM, WALES - JULY 16: A general view outside the Racecourse Ground is seen prior the Pre Season Friendly match between Wrexham AFC and Wolverhampton Wanderers at Racecourse Ground on July 16, 2013 in Wrexham, Wales. (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)

Wrexham have been granted additional time in their application for Category Three academy status to bring facilities up to the required standard.

The Welsh club returned to the EFL in 2023 with a view to spending their first year back as a fourth tier youth set-up before stepping up again this summer.

Wrexham still hope to realise that plan but extra work has been required, including seeking out an alternative base for the academy, following a four-day audit by the Professional Game Academy Audit Company (PGAAC).

If the decision goes against the League One club, as a Category Four academy they would only be able to operate teams from Under-17s upwards.

This would be a huge blow for the youngsters who had signed up for the lower age teams with a view to representing the club in the 2024-25 season.

Parents were informed of the situation via a letter dated May 31 — seen by The Athletic — and signed by Academy Manager Andy Lowe.

He said the issue was “purely in relation to facilities” before adding, “I must reiterate there is still no guarantee of achieving Category 3 status for the new season and at this stage we will remain a Category 4 Academy”.

Regardless of the PGAAC’s eventual verdict, the current uncertainty again underlines the long-term need for a new training ground capable of housing not only Wrexham’s men’s first team but also the women’s and youth sides.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney made this a key target following their takeover in 2021, but finding a suitable site has proved difficult. As a result, manager Phil Parkinson’s team train at a series of rented facilities, including the Colliers Park complex once owned by Wrexham but sold by a previous ownership to the Football Association of Wales to alleviate financial problems.

Finding a permanent replacement for Colliers Park will be key to Wrexham’s setup reaching a level to compete for the best young players, especially with neighbours such as Crewe Alexandra already boasting a Category 2 academy.

Under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) implemented as a joint initiative between the Premier League and EFL in 2012, every club’s youth programme is graded on various criteria, including facilities, staffing levels and investment.

Audits are carried out by the PGAAC and clubs can apply to move up a level annually, as Wrexham did after initially being granted Category 4 status following their promotion back to the EFL in 2023.

Category 1 is the top level and traditionally the domain of elite clubs, such as Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool. Last season, three-quarters of the 20 Premier League clubs boasted Category 1 academies, along with another 11 in the 72-team EFL. Two of those, Southampton and Leicester City, have since been promoted to the Premier League.

To achieve the highest status, playing facilities must include enough grass pitches to accommodate all the various age levels, at least one floodlit grass pitch enclosed with perimeter fencing and designated areas for spectators, a floodlit artificial surface, and an indoor pitch, no smaller than 60 yards by 40 yards, that must be owned by the club.

Under the EPPP rules, Category 1, 2 and 3 academies can register players from under-nines to professionals. Category 4, in contrast, is regarded solely as a late-development model, meaning clubs can only operate teams from under-17s level.

Clubs can move up and down the pyramid, with Wrexham’s fellow League One side Birmingham City being Category 1 as recently as 2022 but now classed as Category 2. Birmingham’s biggest recent academy success is Jude Bellingham , the Real Madrid and England midfielder.

The value of Wrexham developing their own talent has been illustrated in recent months by Max Cleworth , the academy graduate having signed a three-year contract extension after starring on the League Two promotion run-in last season. However, the 21-year-old central defender is the exception rather than the norm at a club whose 15 years in non-League football until that 2023 promotion meant the youth setup inevitably suffered from a lack of investment.

Plenty of talented players have emerged from the Wrexham area in the past decade or so, only to join clubs in the region boasting more resources and better infrastructure, including a trio of now senior Wales internationals in Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams , Fulham winger Harry Wilson (who both came through Liverpool’s academy) and midfielder Tom Lawrence , now of Rangers in Scotland, who played at youth level for Everton, the Premier League’s other Merseyside club, and then nearby Manchester United.

Harry Wilson: Made in Corwen and born to play for Wales

Wrexham are determined to change that.

Speaking last year after the club had applied for Category 4 status following promotion to League Two, executive director Humphrey Ker said: “Ever since the takeover of the football club, Rob and Ryan have been clear in their ambition to build a sustainable model for success, as well as reinforcing the legacies and traditions of Wrexham.

“As a club, we’ve missed out on the opportunity to sign lots of local talent, including the likes of Neco Williams, Harry Wilson and Tom Lawrence, as we’ve not had the infrastructure to support their development going forward. This will now change. We have ambitious and exciting plans to build an infrastructure capable of nurturing north Wales’ finest talents.”

Wrexham issue major update on Paul Mullin's injury and reveal exactly when he'll return

Wrexham have issued a major update on the fitness of Paul Mullin and revealed when he should be ready to return to action.

This season Wrexham will play in League One for the first time in 20 years, but they will begin the campaign without star striker Paul Mullin.

The 29-year-old underwent spinal surgery in June to correct a long-term lower-back and hamstring issue, with the club saying it was necessary to "ensure he is fit for the majority of the 2024/25 campaign."

Mullin will definitely miss Wrexham's pre-season tour in North America, which will see his side face Bournemouth, Chelsea and Vancouver Whitecaps.

Now, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has confirmed how much of the new season he expects Mullin to miss.

"Mulls has had a problem with his back which has affected his hamstring a little bit," said Parkinson, via The Leader.

"Initially, we felt a period of rest would do the trick but it got to the point where progress wasn't happening so between us all we had to make a decision.

"We sat down with Mulls in the summer and spoke about it, that having the operation now gives him the best chance to only miss the start of the season.

"Mulls is going to be close to maybe missing a couple of games at the start of the season if everything goes well but no more than that.

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin pictured (

"It is a blow but he is a fit lad and doesn't take long to get back. He will have his own mini pre-season and we will get him back as fit as we can."

It's the second year in a row that Mullin - who has scored 105 goals in three season at The Racecourse - will miss the start of the season through injury.

The striker missed nine games at the start of 2024-25 after suffering a punctured lung and fracturing four ribs during a friendly against Manchester United.

Wrexham will begin their first season back in the third tier on August 10 at home to Wycombe Wanderers.
