VOTD: Animated Guide To The Hero's Journey In Film

American scholar Joseph Campbell is responsible for identifying the narrative pattern known as The Hero's Journey . He chronicled the monomyth in The Hero with a Thousand Faces in 1949 and described this story template like this:

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.

There are actually 16 stages in The Hero's Journey, and motion designer Iskander Krayenbosch from the Netherlands has created an animated short that runs through 12 of them as they apply to some of the most iconic heroes of motion pictures.

Krayenbosch created this project as a graduation project for HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, and it's a pretty nice piece of work. Plus, it's educational, showing just how similar every hero's story is at its core. Whether it's Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Back to the Future , they all fit in Campbell's breakdown of the hero's journey.

This is fundamental learning whether it's in literature or cinema, but believe it or not, there are some people who may not be aware of the concept of The Hero's Journey. So when someone cynical says all movies are the same nowadays, you can agree and tell them that it's been like that for decades, even before the art of filmmaking was invented. But it's how these stages are used and the characters created to propel them that hopfeully makes each and every story unique.

Beauty and the Beast

This classic animated hit is one of the most popular Disney movies for a generation. It follows the adventures of Belle, a bright young woman who finds herself in the castle of a prince who’s been turned into a mysterious beast. With the help of the castle’s enchanted staff, Belle soon learns the most important lesson of all — that true beauty comes from within. And there is also a live action version featuring Emma Watson available, should you want to double dip!

Captain America

During World War II, Steve Rogers is a sickly man from Brooklyn who’s transformed into super-soldier Captain America to aid in the war effort. Rogers must stop the Red Skull – Adolf Hitler’s ruthless head of weaponry, and the leader of an organization that intends to use a mysterious device of untold powers for world domination.

Doctor Strange

Dr. Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, and hope, in a mysterious enclave. He quickly learns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.

Finding Nemo

When a young clownfish called Nemo, is unexpectedly taken from his Great Barrier Reef home to a dentist’s office aquarium. It’s up to his worrisome father Marlin and a friendly but forgetful fish Dory to bring Nemo home — meeting vegetarian sharks, surfer dude turtles, hypnotic jellyfish, hungry seagulls, and more along the way. It’s a classic Pixar movie that is always enjoyable to watch. And if you love this, check out its sequel Finding Dory.

Quite possibly one of the most scariest movies available on Disney+, this Oscar winning documentary tells follows Alex Honnold as he attempts to become the first person to ever free solo climb Yosemite’s 3,000 foot high El Capitan wall. This one will have you watching through your hands as he climbs with no ropes or safety gear, in what would arguably be the greatest feat in rock climbing history.

Disney tackles Greek mythology in this animated feature. Hercules (Tate Donovan), a son of gods, was snatched as a baby by Hades (James Woods) and forced to live among mortals as a half-man, half-god. Now a teenager, Hercules needs to perform a rite of passage on Earth to prove himself worthy of living with the gods on Mount Olympus. With his plucky satyr sidekick, Philoctetes (Danny DeVito), along for the ride, Hercules must learn how to use his strength to defeat a series of evil creatures.

Plagued with worry and insomnia since saving New York from destruction, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), now, is more dependent on the suits that give him his Iron Man persona — so much so that every aspect of his life is affected, including his relationship with Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow). After a malevolent enemy known as the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) reduces his personal world to rubble, Tony must rely solely on instinct and ingenuity to avenge his losses and protect the people he loves.

Easily one of my favourite modern animated movies and sees Moana answer the oceans call, taking to the seas to save her people from a terrible curse. The movie features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the Demigod Maui and his character really adds some great comedy moments. Moana delivers a awesome soundtrack including “Your Welcome” and “How Far I’ll Go”.

National Treasure

Historian and code-breaker Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) has been searching his whole life for a rumored treasure dating back to the creation of the United States. Joining an expedition led by fellow treasure hunter Ian Howe (Sean Bean), Gates finds an ice-locked Colonial ship in the Arctic Circle that contains a clue linking the treasure to the Declaration of Independence. But when Howe betrays him, Gates has to race to get to the document ahead of his so-called colleague.

Pixar’s latest animated smash, Onward, is set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers embark on an extraordinary quest to spend one day with their late father. This is a lovely story and will no doubt leave you wiping away the tears.

Primal Survival

Star Wars: A New Hope

The Imperial Forces — under orders from cruel Darth Vader (David Prowse) — hold Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) hostage, in their efforts to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), captain of the Millennium Falcon, work together with the companionable droid duo R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) to rescue the beautiful princess, help the Rebel Alliance, and restore freedom and justice to the Galaxy.

The Lion King

The original animated classic is still my favourite Disney movie of all time, the music is amazing and iconic. It’s one of Disney’s most unique animated classics, that tells the story of a young lion cub named Simba, who just can’t wait to be king. But his uncle Scar, craves the title for himself and will stop at nothing to get it, leading to Simba being banished from his home, only to return years later when his pride need him.  Or check out the 2019 version if you haven’t already.

The Muppet Movie

After Kermit the Frog decides to pursue a movie career, he starts his cross-country trip from Florida to California. Along the way, he meets and befriends Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and rock musicians Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. When Kermit is offered a job by Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) to advertise the fried frog legs at his restaurant chain, Kermit turns Hopper down. However, Hopper refuses to relent and pursues Kermit and his companions to a final showdown.

The Princess Bride

In this enchantingly cracked fairy tale, the beautiful Princess Buttercup and the dashing Westley must overcome staggering odds to find happiness amid six-fingered swordsmen, murderous princes, Sicilians and rodents of unusual size. But even death can’t stop these true lovebirds from triumphing.

Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang embark on a road trip with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky. The adventurous journey turns into an unexpected reunion as Woody’s slight detour leads him to his long-lost friend Bo Peep. As Woody and Bo discuss the old days, they soon start to realize that they’re worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy.

Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old balloon salesman, is about to fulfill a lifelong dream. Tying thousands of balloons to his house, he flies away to the South American wilderness. But curmudgeonly Carl’s worst nightmare comes true when he discovers a little boy named Russell is a stowaway aboard the balloon-powered house.

Superheroes easily capture the imagination of anyone who chooses to bask in their comic book realm. And once those beloved saviors get the big-budget movie treatment, fans are given plenty of reasons to rejoice when that big-screen adaptation ends up being amazing. On both the big and small screen, there’s a myriad of animated superhero movies that bring Marvel and DC’s finest to life in impressive fashion. Even Disney got in on all the superhero fun by crafting a few incredible (pun intended) animated superhero epics of their own! If you’re in the mood for some superheroic antics and want to see some baddies get their due comeuppance, then the following list of 50 animated superhero movies will definitely save the day.

1. ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse’ (2018)

Not only is this film the best animated film effort ever put out via Marvel, but it’s also arguably the greatest Spider-Man movie of all time. Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse shows love to the young web-slinging prodigy Miles Morales and a fun assortment of other Spidey heroes from neighboring universes. The movie’s heartwarming moments, shocking twists, hilarious hijinks, and unique animation style all combine to make it a bonafide classic. It doesn’t matter what age you are— Into the Spiderverse is a favorite among all ages.

2. ‘The Incredibles’ (2004)

Once the 3D animation wizards at Pixar decided to get into the superhero business, they knocked it out of the park. Their first crack at the popular genre resulted in The Incredibles , a film with a lot of heart, humor, and exciting action. The family of superheroes at the heart of this film are beloved and their struggle to stay undercover as regular citizens is engrossing. Once a crazed fan-turned-villain rears his ugly head, the superpowered fam springs into action and makes this film even more of a fun wild ride.

It may have taken forever and a day to get this sequel, but it was well worth the long wait. The Incredibles 2 marked the return of the family that fights together and saves together. A new baddie enters the picture to change the public’s positive perception of superheroes, Mr. Incredible adjusts to being a stay-at-home dad, Elastigirl takes on some solo superhero work, Violet finds her first teenage crush, and little Jack-Jack’s powers begin to grow out of control. All of those factors combine to create an awesome Pixar film that showcases The Incredibles once more for their adoring fans.

4. ‘Superman/Batman: Public Enemies’ (2009)

Jeph Loeb's “Public Enemies” arc from the Superman/Batman comic book series gets translated wonderfully into one of DC’s finest animated superhero movies. The two biggest DC icons must come together due to the threat of President Lex Luthor (yes, you read that right!) and a host of other DC baddies. You’ll get to witness Lex at his most conniving here and be treated to a wealth of DC Comics cameos while Batman and Superman fight for the greater good in impressive fashion.

5. ‘Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme’ (2007)

If you enjoyed each and every minute of the mind-bending live-action Doctor Strange movie, then you’ll most definitely feel the same way about this 2007 animated film. Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme details the mystical journey that Dr. Stephen Strange embarked on during his ascent to the title of “Sorcerer Supreme.” That ascension to one of the most powerful magic wielders in Marvel history makes for a quality viewing experience in animated form. Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme is a visual tour de force that will certainly enrapture one and all.

How can anyone not enjoy watching Marvel’s big green brute swing his enormous fists and feet at someone? You can turn your brain off if you’d like and just enjoy witnessing The Incredible Hulk square up with Wolverine and Thor. The plot buildup to those epic battles is pretty interesting too, so you can also watch this with your brain turned off if you’d like.

7. ‘Green Lantern: Emerald Knights’ (2011)

The Green Lantern Corps stands out as DC’s proud protectors of the galaxy. One of its most recognizable members is Hal Jordan, who has a respectable track record when it comes to animated adaptations of his many adventures. Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is one of those strong animated movie series entries as it follows incoming member Arisia as she and the rest of the Lanterns battle with Krona. The stories told here about several legendary Lanterns and the exciting action that unfolds here make this film worth watching.

8. ‘Big Hero 6’ (2014)

The fictional city of San Fransokyo will enrapture you as you follow the superhero exploits of Hiro, his robot companion Baymax, and their assorted allies. There’s a lot of heart and hilarity at play in Big Hero 6 , which has the power to appeal to adults and children alike. This film moves at a comfortable pace, delivers amazing action sequences on par with the ones presented in The Incredibles , and tugs at the heartstrings more often than you’d expect.

9. ‘Justice League: Gods and Monsters’ (2015)

DC’s many universes feature cool renditions of everyone's favorite caped crusaders. Justice League: Gods and Monsters puts a darker and far more sinister version of the Justice League in the spotlight. This movie’s wholly different versions of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman provide the mass appeal this film deserves due to their more violent nature and eventual turn to redemption. DC’s “Trinity” of heroes will definitely shock first-time viewers of this one.

10. ‘Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox’ (2013)

If you followed the comics that inspired this film, then you know just how integral it is to the birth of The New 52 era of DC. Watching all of the events tied to this storyline unfold onscreen is a treat as it’s done in the best way possible. Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox follows The Flash as he looks to fix the errors caused to his world’s timeline via his own actions. What follows is a movie filled with alternate versions of fan favorites and monumental events that ended up changing the status quo of everything we once knew about the DC Universe.

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is an incredible wrap-up of the DC Animated Movie Universe and provides an ending that is sure to satisfy.

2018’s The Death of Superman is pretty much a modern retelling of the comic book to film adaptation known as 2007’s Superman: Doomsday . And to be quite honest, this new take on one of the comic book medium's most shocking storylines is a much better presentation. The brutality that was on display in the comics between Supes and Doomsday is animated perfectly here, so expect to feel every brutal blow thrown by those superpowered rivals. The cameos from other DC heroes and getting to watch Superman at his very best are the main reasons you’ll want to check out this heart-tugger of an animated DC film.

John Constantine is quite a shady and self-serving individual, but he can do a bit of good whenever the situation calls for it. Matt Ryan reprises his live-action role of the beloved anti-hero in animated form here and does it as well as you’d expect. Constantine’s current mission entails finding a cure that will break a young girl out of her supernatural stupor. This film features strong animation and some truly emotional moments that make every one of its characters incredibly endearing.

So you’d think two films that practically adopt the same origin story for a superhero would be super redundant. But that’s not the case for the animated superhero movies that focus on Wonder Woman’s initial rise to power and superstardom. The 2009 Wonder Woman animated movie paints her in the best light during her clash with a vicious war god. While the storyline should be familiar to anyone who has followed Wonder Woman for an extended period of time, this film still offers a fun romp through her origins as a heroic conduit between the world of man and her fellow Amazons.

Set in the distant 31st century, a few members of the Fatal Five are on a mission to retrieve their time sphere from the Legion of Super-Heroes' main base. However, when Star Boy attempts to stop them, they're all brought back into the 21st century after the time sphere is switched on. The Justice League ends up becoming entangled in the entire mess when Superman comes across the time sphere and wants to bring it in for observation and analysis.

To make matters even worse, the bio-terrorist they come up against has an extremely powerful "Quirk" at the ready and an army of followers who are willing to die for his ideals. Expect flashy action sequences, super emotional moments, and plenty of fan service as My Hero's ensemble cast comes together as a united front to fight for good.

48. 'Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham' (2023)

11 ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ (2000)

The Coen brothers are masters of making some of the most entertaining crime movies, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? is definitely one of their best. Loosely based on Homer ‘s The Odyssey , it’s about three fugitives roaming the southern U.S. in search of treasure with the law hot on their heels. Unlike the Greek classic, however, the Coens’ crime film has great Southern American music, traditional Western tropes, and stars George Clooney , Tim Blake Nelson , and John Turturro .

The characters in O Brother, Where Art Thou? encounter mentors, face challenges, and go through profound transformations , just like the heroes in the monomyth do. The ensuing adventure is as humorous as it is exciting, an offbeat adaptation of a massively important and influential classic. With its visual innovations, clever cinematography, and unique philosophical themes that have been endlessly analyzed throughout the years, The Matrix was unlike anything audiences had seen before at the time of its release . Perhaps one of the main reasons why its story clicked so well with viewers around the world was because it closely follows the stages of the Hero’s Journey, as Neo goes from an average Joe to an all-powerful hero.

8 ‘Kung Fu Panda’ (2008)

Mark osborne and john stevenson’s martial arts adventure.

For those that think that family animated movies are exclusively for children, Kung Fu Panda is the perfect mind-changing watch. It follows Po ( Jack Black ), a lazy panda who dreams of being a kung fu hero, as he’s thrust into a journey of discovering his destiny as the Chosen One. There are many examples of the Hero’s Journey in movies that logically follow the same structure, but the creative things that Kung Fu Panda does with the archetype are entirely its own .

Just like all the compelling heroes of Campbell’s model, Po is called to action, goes through several life-threatening ordeals with help from friends and allies, and finds that the power to be the guardian of the Valley of Peace comes from within. Sprinkled with hilarious humor, outstanding voice acting, and some of the best action in any animated film, it’s undoubtedly one of DreamWorks Animation’s best efforts.

Kung Fu Panda

7 ‘finding nemo’ (2003), andrew stanton’s love letter to fatherhood.

Hero’s Journey movies are usually action-focused epics, and not often family-friendly stories about fish. That only makes Finding Nemo even more special. It’s the story of Marlin ( Albert Brooks ), a timid clownfish who, after his son Nemo ( Alexander Gould in one of the best child voice performances in animated cinema) is kidnapped, sets out to find him against all the threats that the deep blue sea has to offer.

Though Finding Nemo isn’t your typical kind of hero’s journey, where the story is much more intimate and the biggest threats that the characters face are mostly internal, it very much follows the formula. What finds itself transformed in the end is the relationship between Marlin and Nemo, in one of the most touching endings of Pixar’s filmography.

6 ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (1939)

Victor fleming’s timeless musical classic.

An exciting adventure that uses both black-and-white and beautiful color, through a fantastical land that any movie fan would love to live in, The Wizard of Oz follows Dorothy ( Judy Garland ) in her journey through the magical land of Oz, searching for a mysterious wizard who can send her back home.

The movie was an absolute sensation when it came out, and even after more than three-quarters of a century, it’s still remembered as one of the greatest American movie masterpieces. The stages of the monomyth are clear in The Wizard of Oz : the ordinary world is Kansas, Dorothy crosses a very literal threshold to a vastly different world, and her journey of transformation is full of faces both friendly and menacing.

5 ‘the lion king’ (1994), roger allers and rob minkoff’s twist on shakespeare.

1994’s The Lion King is a movie that needs no introduction. Many would say that it’s the best-animated movie to ever come out of Disney, and it’s fully understandable, thanks to its timeless songs and the animated film’s brilliant depiction of grief. It’s the grand and epic story of Simba ( Matthew Broderick ), a lion cub prince who’s tricked into exile by his uncle Scar ( Jeremy Irons ), who wishes to have the throne for himself.

The animation is majestic, with some really charming character designs, and the story is compelling from beginning to end. Its philosophical themes of identity and self-discovery are beautiful, and the way they’re conveyed through a classic hero’s journey structure in The Lion King is simply perfect . The film is in certain ways an adaptation of William Shakespeare ‘s Hamlet , but its fidelity to Campbell’s monomyth is much more interesting to dissect.

The Harry Potter series features not just one, but eight of the movies that best follow the Hero’s Journey. From Chris Columbus ‘s Sorcerer’s Stone to David Yates ‘s Deathly Hallows — Part 2 , the franchise follows the coming-of-age story of the titular character ( Daniel Radcliffe ) and his two best friends, as they grow to become key players in a war against an evil wizard.

Everyone has a different favorite installment in the series, but every Harry Potter movie plays an equally crucial role in the overarching narrative of the story, which very closely follows the monomyth . Not only that, but each film follows a smaller version of the general model as well. It’s probably what makes these movies so easy to enjoy, since they so faithfully walk along the lines laid out by Campbell and so many filmmakers from before 2001.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Adaptation of the first of J.K. Rowling’s popular children’s novels about Harry Potter, a boy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own. He is summoned from his life as an unwanted child to become a student at Hogwarts, an English boarding school for wizards. There, he meets several friends who become his closest allies and help him discover the truth about his parents’ mysterious deaths.

3 ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Trilogy (2001 – 2003)

There are countless things that make Peter Jackson ‘s The Lord of the Rings trilogy one of the best fantasy film franchises of all time, and one of the most important is the fact that all three installments in the trilogy truly feel like part of a greater whole, as they collaborate in telling the story of Frodo ( Elijah Wood ), the Fellowship of the Ring, and their efforts to destroy the greatest tool of an evil tyrant terrorizing Middle-earth.

Of course, the monomyth-following template was already there, set in stone by the legendary J.R.R. Tolkien when he wrote what’s undoubtedly one of the best series of fantasy books in history. Even yet, the way Jackson and company built on top of that, telling a story that feels undeniably cinematic, is admirable beyond measure.

2 ‘Citizen Kane’ (1941)

Orson welles’s groundbreaking masterpiece.

When Orson Welles made his passion project Citizen Kane , he probably had no idea that he was making what would in the future be referred to as the single greatest film of all time by thousands of people, as well as one of the most essential movies of the ’40s. Inspired by magnate William Randolph Hearst , it’s a character study about a group of reporters trying to decipher the last words of Charles Foster Kane (Welles), a powerful newspaper tycoon.

Citizen Kane is an entirely unique picture, and the way it’s structured is just as well. Citizen Kane follows Campbell’s monomyth formula in a very non-traditional way , which only makes it more of a groundbreaking story. There are plenty of good reasons for its fame, and that’s certainly one of the biggest.

1 ‘star wars’ (1977), george lucas’s revolutionary space opera.

Perhaps no movie more famously follows the Hero’s Journey archetype than Star Wars , with George Lucas having taken direct inspiration from Campbell. The hero in this particular story is Luke Skywalker ( Mark Hamill ), a young farm boy who’s thrown into an adventure far greater than anything he’d encountered before, joining the Rebellion against the dictatorial Galactic Empire.

One of the best space operas of all time, Star Wars showcases what makes the monomyth such an effective way of telling stories and celebrating the art of storytelling itself. Luke is a deeply compelling hero, his journey is incredibly entertaining, and all the allies and villains that he encounters along the way are equally iconic. As far as modern myths go, Star Wars is certainly one of the best.

It’s a story we’ve seen many times over: an unlikely hero embarks on a journey that has been thrust upon them.

Along the way, the hero make some allies and enemies, maybe even fall in love. At the outset, they become stronger and wiser than they were when they embarked on their journey.

No matter what the genre or setting of the story is, the central narrative follows the hero’s journey structure. This is known in literary circles as the “monomyth” or, in pop culture, as the “h ero’s journey” .

Here are 6 iconic movies that follow the hero’s journey:

A very brief history of the hero’s journey

The monomyth was first conceptualized by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949).

In Campbell’s monomyth, the hero embarks on a circular journey comprised of seventeen stages. The book identifies a narrative pattern throughout works of mythology (and narrative in general).

The monomyth has since been adapted and condensed into twelve stages by Hollywood executive Christopher Vogler.

Vogler developed his version of the monomyth while working at Disney, and once you recognize the pattern, you’ll be able to identify it in some capacity in almost any film. He’s the one who popularized calling it the “hero’s journey,” and his version focuses specifically on movie narratives.

The 12 stages of Vogler’s hero’s journey

Let’s break down each step in the hero’s journey (warning, many GIFS ahead).

1. The Ordinary World

The hero is introduced in their ordinary world. The mundane ordinary world is presented in stark contrast with the “special world” that the hero will enter when they accept their quest.

In Spider-Man , Peter Parker is introduced as a regular, particularly nerdy teen in Queens–quite the opposite of the kickass crime-stopper he becomes.

2. The Call to Adventure

The initiating incident of the story takes place. The hero is introduced to the challenge or problem that their quest will seek to overcome.

In Star Wars , the call to adventure comes in the form of Princess Leia’s message, delivered by R2-D2.

3. Refusal of the Call

The hero hesitates to accept the call to adventure. This could be because they don’t feel they have the skills to take on the quest or they don’t want to leave the life they know.

In The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Frodo is reluctant to leave his comfortable and familiar life in the Shire in order to face the unknown dangers that await him on his journey.

4. Meeting with the Mentor

The hero meets a wise, usually older, woman or man. The mentor guides the hero in gaining the supplies and knowledge needed to embark on the adventure. However, the mentor can only go so far with the hero.

In The Matrix , this is where Neo meets Morpheus, who tells him to take the red pill or the blue pill.

5. Crossing the First Threshold

The hero commits wholeheartedly to the adventure and integrates into the special world. There is no turning back from this point.

In Spider-Man , Peter crosses the threshold when he catches the thief who killed his Uncle Ben and realizes that he must use his powers to stop crime.

6. Tests, Allies and Enemies

The hero explores the special world, faces trial, and makes friends and enemies along the way.

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , this is the part where Harry adjusts to life in the Wizarding world, makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and becomes enemies with Draco Malfoy.

7. Approach to the Innermost Cave

The hero draws closer to the center of the story and the special world. Often, this “innermost cave” is where the “object” or “elixir” of the quest is hidden. The object of the quest may be an actual treasure or a symbolic achievement.

The innermost cave takes the form of the Death Star in Star Wars ; Luke and his companions must infiltrate the ship to save Leia.

8. The Ordeal

The hero is pushed to the brink of death or loss and faces the greatest challenge yet. It is through this struggle that the hero experiences a process of death and rebirth (figuratively or literally).

In The Lion King , Simba’s ordeal means he must face the guilt he feels for his father’s death and reclaim his right to Pride Rock, which has been taken over by Scar.

9. The Reward

The hero experiences the consequences of surviving death (figuratively or literally) and retrieves the object of their quest. It’s often at this point that the hero has a love scene with their love interest and reconciles with their enemies.

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone , Harry passes the obstacles barring the Philosopher’s Stone and discovers that the stone has appeared in his pocket.

10. The Road Back

The hero returns to the ordinary world or continues onward to an ultimate destination, but their trials aren’t over just yet. They are often pursued by a vengeful force that they must face.

In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this is where Gollum confronts Frodo at the ledge of the volcano and tries to take the Ring back from him.

11. The Resurrection

The hero emerges from the special world fundamentally changed by their experiences.

In The Lion King , Simba learns the truth that it was Scar who orchestrated Mufasa’s death. Simba throws Scar off Pride Rock in order to reclaim his place as king.   

12. Return with the Elixir

The hero brings with them the object of their quest, which they use to better the ordinary world in some way–whether it’s through knowledge, a cure, or some form of protection.

In The Matrix , armed with the knowledge of the truth, Neo delivers a message to the Matrix that he will save humanity.   

What can we learn from the hero’s journey?

Not surprisingly, the hero’s journey has been adopted by content marketers because it acts as a framework for effective storytelling.

The lesson we can take away from the hero’s journey is similar to the lesson we took away from our creepypasta study . The formulas that are recycled again and again in narrative are in place because they work. It’s the same with formulas for design , or any other aspect of creation.

But while a story revolving around a protagonist’s change makes for a solid base plot, there need to be significant variations to the story, characters, and setting to make the story new and exciting.  Otherwise, you end up with empty clichés and forgettable stories.

This is a lesson that extends beyond movie makers and fiction writers to content creators in general.

3. Create the framework for your timeline

Once you’ve picked which timeline layout you want to use, it’s time to plot out your timeline. Map out each event and figure out how the information will be arranged on the page.

If you’re using a timeline template , then the framework will already be laid out for you. All you have to do is input your information, add or take away events, and customize the design.

4. Add dates, text, and images to your timeline infographic

With a framework in place, start to fill in your timeline dates, text, and any supporting images. Don’t worry too much about style at this point–you can jazz up the design after you’ve laid out all the information.

5. Embellish your timeline infographic with colors, fonts, and icons

Once you’re happy with how your information is laid out, you can spice up your design. Think about what kind of mood you want your timeline infographic to have. Then, pick a color scheme that reflects that mood. Similarly, pick fonts that reflect the theme of your timeline.

You can also embellish your timeline design with icons. Icons are perfect for emphasizing and visualizing important points on your timeline.

So many heroes...

For over a century now, Walt Disney Animation Studios has given audiences some of the most beloved, groundbreaking, and majestic cinematic experiences. During that time, those timeless films have introduced us to unforgettable movie villains , sidekicks, and heroes that have withstood the test of time and found a permanent place in the hearts of billions of fans. But sometimes, those iconic princesses and knights in shining armor aren’t the real heroes of their respective stories.

That being said, here are the REAL heroes and unsung champions, from some of the best Disney animated movies …

Anna (Frozen)

There are countless reasons why Princess Anna is the true hero of Frozen , and a lot of those have to do with the younger sister of Queen Elsa actually being a great inspiration for younger viewers. She opens up about her feelings, accepts the call to adventure, and is willing to do anything and everything to help out those she cares about, even if it means sacrificing herself.

Abu (Aladdin)

In addition to being one of the best Disney sidekicks of all time, Abu is actually a pretty righteous hero in Aladdin , one who always stays true to himself and his friends. Sure, his greed nearly kills him and Aladdin , but he comes through moments later when he tricks Jafar and steals the magic lamp, which leads to Genie coming out of his lamp.

Baloo (The Jungle Book)

Baloo is not only one of the best Disney characters of all time, but he’s also a great hero throughout The Jungle Book . The iconic sloth bear goes above and beyond to help Mowgli on his journey to find the “Man-Village,” teaches him some great lessons and a legendary song along the way, and comes through for everyone time and time again.

Widow Tweed (The Fox And The Hound)

There’s a lot to love about the classic Disney animated film, The Fox and the Hound , but the character who continues to rise to the occasion is Widow Tweed. From finding and caring for a young Tod to saving multiple characters from certain death to being the voice of reason in some tense situations, this lovable elderly character is simply the best.

Nani Pelekai (Lilo & Stitch)

Go back and watch Lilo & Stitch as an adult and see if your opinions on Nani, Lilo’s older sister and guardian, have changed. Throughout this 2002 animated film, Nani does everything she can to make life better for her younger sister, even if that means pushing herself to the limit (and then some) or trying to pull off the impossible. She’s a hero, that’s for sure.

Rafiki (The Lion King)

Who never gives up hope for Simba in The Lion King ? Rafiki, that’s who. The shaman and advisor for the late Mufasa is one of Simba’s biggest supporters and was there for him as a young cub and as an adult when he returned from his self-imposed exile away from the Pride Lands. And he puts a whooping on some hyenas, which never gets old.

Scuttle (The Little Mermaid)

Sure Scuttle doesn’t know what he’s talking about half the time in The Little Mermaid , but the seagull and friend of Ariel helps the young princess learn more about the human world before helping in a big way when he discovers that Vanessa is actually Ursula in disguise. 

Pacha (The Emperor's New Groove)

Pacha in The Emperor’s New Groove is an underappreciated hero if we’ve ever seen one, so it’s about time he receives some praise. Putting up with Kuzco is enough to earn Pacha a place in the halls of great Disney heroes, but he does so much more than that throughout the movie. Constantly putting himself before others, taking care of himself in a fight, and being a supportive friend are also admirable qualities.

Thumper (Bambi)

Besides the titular deer in Bambi , no character is more impactful or important than Thumper. More than 80 years after the film’s release, fans still celebrate the iconic rabbit for his go-getter personality, leadership skills, and seemingly limitless energy. If it weren’t for him, who knows what would have happened to Bambi.

Charlotte 'Lottie' La Bouff (The Princess And The Frog)

When it comes to best friends in Disney movies, few come close to Charlotte “Lottie” La Bouff in The Princess and the Frog . Instead of using her family’s wealth, power, and influence in menacing or vindictive ways, this southern belle uses her blessings to offer support and love for Tiana and her dreams. We could all use a friend like that.

The Mice (Cinderella)

When it comes to mico-heroes, no names carry as much weight as Jaq and Gus from Disney’s Cinderella . Throughout this 1950 animated classic, these two trusty mice help lead the show when it comes to fixing up Cinderella’s dress, supporting her, and helping make her dreams of attending the ball come true. And who helps save Cinderella from her stepmother’s captivity? Yep, these fearless mice.

Colonel, Sergeant Tibbs, And Other Animals (One Hundred And One Dalmatians)

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes in One Hundred and One Dalmatians , and some of the best examples of this can be found in Colonel, Sergeant Tibbs, and the other animals who help save the pups and defeat Curella Cruella de Vil by thwarting her masterplan. The way these four-legged (and sometimes winged) characters get everyone involved is nothing short of magical. 

Nana (Peter Pan)

One of the movie dogs we want to adopt , Nana in Peter Pan is a character that’s always down to offer some support. Though she doesn’t journey off to Never Land with Pan and the Darling children, she holds the fort down in their absence. Speaking of Wendy, John, and Michael Darling, who is it that takes care of the children every night and gives them much-needed medicine? Yep, it’s Nana, the trusty nursemaid St. Bernard.

The Dwarfs (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs)

Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, and Dopey are some of the earliest examples of Disney heroes, and nearly 90 years later, they’re still some of the best. Sure, the Prince gets a lot of credit in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , but it’s these classic characters who take care of the young princess the rest of the time.

Pascal (Tangled)

Rapunzel is empowering and Flynn Rider is dashing, but let’s not forget the real hero of Tangled … Pascal. Despite his small size and stature (he is a chameleon, for crying out loud), this feisty and fearless lizard will do anything and everything to serve and protect the princess. Whether it means putting on a pink dress or tripping Gothel and sending her falling out of Rapunzel’s tower, he’s going to get it done.

The Fairies (Sleeping Beauty)

The Three Good Fairies (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather) are crucial to Princess Aurora’s survival in Sleeping Beauty , and they don’t always receive enough credit. From altering Maleficent’s curse upon Aurora at her birth to planning her birthday dress later on, these three fairies get a lot done… once they stop fighting one another.

Archdeacon (The Hunchback Of Notre Dame)

If it wasn’t for Archdeacon in The Hunchback of Notre Dame , who knows what that loathsome and depraved Claude Frollo would have planned for everyone around him. The voice of reason with a heart and soul of pure gold, this clergyman saves multiple lives and thwarts diabolical plans like it’s nothing. 

Archimedes (The Sword In The Stone)

When it comes to heroes in The Sword in the Stone , the first names to come up are probably Arthur or Merlin. And while both of those characters are great, let’s not forget Archimedes, the talking and trustworthy owl who helps both legendary figures along the way. Fix-It Felix (Ralph Breaks The Internet)

Though he’s not in the movie all that much , Fix-It Felix is still heroic as can be in Ralph Breaks the Internet . But when he and Calhoun are on screen, they’re stealing the show and offering both hilarious and tender moments. Come on, who else would adopt all those orphaned Sugar Rush racers when they have no place to go?

Little Noi (Raya And The Last Dragon)

You could argue that every character in Raya and the Last Dragon is a hero in their own right, but Lille Noi, the toddler con artist who joins Raya on her journey, has to be at the top of the list. Though other characters do go through changes along the way, the adorable Noi has one of the most transformative and emotional arcs of them all.

The Enchantress (Beauty And The Beast)

The Enchantress could be seen as a villain in Beauty and the Beast , but the young and vain prince wouldn’t have learned his lesson if not for her lesson about true beauty in the opening chapter of the movie. A lot of people got turned into clocks, cups, and candelabras in the process, but sometimes tough love is all that’s needed.

Li Shang (Mulan)

Nothing against the titular heroine of Mulan , but let’s not act like Li Shang is some chump put in charge of a regiment of outcasts and misfits. He never gives up, he kicks a lot of butts, and gave us one of the best Disney songs of the late 20th century with “I’ll Make a Man out of You.” 

Kala (Tarzan)

If we could give this honor to Phil Collins for his Tarzan soundtrack , he’d be at the top of this list. But since he’s not in the movie, we can’t go without celebrating Kala, Tarzan’s adoptive gorilla mom. When everyone sees the young human as a freak or threat, this grieving mother rises to the occasion and takes him in as one of her own.

Olaf (Frozen 2)

There’s a case to be made for Olaf being the biggest hero of both Frozen movies as he’s constantly accepting the call of adventure, protecting his friends, and putting himself on the line to make sure the job is done. Sure, he’s mostly around for comedic relief during tense moments, but this snowman is the man!

Toby (The Great Mouse Detective)

The Great Mouse Detective is a Disney movie that doesn’t come up all that often these days, which is a shame because it features one of the best pooches of all time: Toby, Sherlock Holmes’ Basset Hound. This incredibly smart and crafty dog is key to Basil, Dawson and Olivia’s quest and provides for some impactful discoveries. But would you expect any less from the world’s greatest detective’s best friend?

Piglet (The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh)

Piglet is pretty much the underdog of the Hundred Acre Wood in The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and is often caught in the middle of some issue or misadventure. However, this doesn’t mean he’s any less heroic. In fact, there’s an argument to be made for him being an unsung hero of the group as he is often an inspiration for them all, as well as for us watching at home.

Princess Kida (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire isn’t one of the top Disney movies, but it is one that features a rather underappreciated hero, or heroine, as is the case with Kida. The princess of the lost city deep under the ocean, Kida proves time and time again she’s not a damsel in distress, but instead a fearless warrior with a heart of gold and nerves of steel.

Philoctetes (Hercules)

We’d all love to see Danny DeVito return for a live-action Hercules movie because we just can’t get enough of his satyr character, Philoctetes. Though he doesn’t have the strength or height of the movie’s titular hero, “Phil,” as he likes to be called, is a great teacher and trainer who helps the demigod prepare for his hero’s journey. And what good is a hero who doesn’t know how to make the most of his abilities?

Baymax (Big Hero 6)

One of the most fun and exciting Disney animated movies in recent memory, Big Hero 6 is a treat from top to bottom. A lot of that is because of Baymax, the childlike inflatable healthcare robot who helps Hiro Hamada find his place in the world and then go and save it. He doesn’t have great communication skills but this robot has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.

Flit (Pocahontas)

Flit, Pocahontas’ pet hummingbird, isn’t the biggest, strongest, or most intimidating hero in the Disney universe, but he’s definitely one of the most protective and courageous. Throughout Pocahontas , the colorful bird doesn’t let his size, or lack thereof, stop him from serving his best friend. Is he a little too overprotective? Yeah, but he’s got heart.

Jiminy Cricket (Pinocchio)

What would have happened to Pinocchio if Jiminy Cricket wasn’t around to keep him in line? Well, you could say that the classic character from Disney’s Pinocchio doesn’t always get the job done, but he tries, and that’s what really counts. And, he’s not big on lying.

Prince Philip (Sleeping Beauty)

From following his heart to saving Princess Aurora from an eternal rest to fighting Maleficent and her goons in Sleeping Beauty , there’s a lot to love about Prince Phillip. This courageous character helped set the standard for Disney heroes back in the 1950s.

These characters are heroes in their own way. While some are more courageous, stronger, or more eager than others, they all have a lot of heart and the best of intentions.

10 Good Movie Examples Showing the Hero’s Journey

The Hero’s Journey is an old literary device that appears in a wide variety of stories throughout human history. As such, it has also featured in many popular films since the dawn of cinema.

Although there are some deviations, the hero’s journey usually consists of a cyclical story with some main narrative beats. An ordinary person receives a call to adventure that requires them to leave their known, comfortable life for the unknown. They may refuse this call, but they soon reach a threshold where they need to answer it, which begins their transformation over the course of the story. They then set out on their journey, typically with the aid of a helper and/or mentor. They face challenges and temptations before experiencing a revelation that results in growth and change. The hero then atones and confronts the final conflict. At last, they are rewarded for their efforts and return to a known existence.

The following are ten films in a variety of genres that serve as great examples of the hero’s journey. Given the nature of this subject as an entire narrative story arc, do note that spoilers may be discussed for all films below.

Movie Examples Showing the Hero’s Journey

1. the lord of the rings trilogy (2001-2003).

This classic high fantasy epic is one of the most recognized depictions of the hero’s journey in fiction. The story centers around a hobbit named Frodo, who comes into possession of the Ring of Power, an object of evil that will doom the world if it falls into the wrong hands. With the aid of his mentor figure, the wizard Gandalf, Frodo must leave his idyllic homeland of the Shire and travel across the realm of Middle Earth to see the Ring destroyed. A powerful story about the horrors of war and how the bonds of fellowship carry people through the darkest times, The Lord of the Rings knows who the true heroes are and how they are ultimately changed by their experiences.

2. Star Wars (1977)

Almost everyone has heard of Star Wars, and it also happens to be a strong depiction of the hero’s journey. Farmboy Luke Skywalker lives an uneventful life on the remote desert planet of Tatooine. That changes when he comes into possession of a pair of droids holding secret information vital to the resistance against the Empire. He then must set out to ensure the stolen plans for the Empire’s new superweapon, the Death Star, are delivered to the resistance so they stand a chance of destroying it. With the help of his mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, he learns the ways of the Jedi, an ancient order of mystical knights. Throughout the story, Luke transforms into a Jedi Knight and true hero. The original film, released in 1977, was an instant sensation that changed the art of filmmaking forever.

3. Black Panther (2018)

Many superhero films also follow the hero’s journey, but 2018’s groundbreaking Black Panther, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is one of the best examples. Upon the death of his father, T’Challa becomes king of the hidden African nation of Wakanda. Throughout the story, he goes through death and rebirth and is challenged by the antagonist’s viewpoint. The end sees a return and atonement as he leads his nation and his people forward. Hailed as a breakthrough for Black storytelling and representation, Black Panther is a shining example of a film done right on all counts.

4. Airplane! (1980)

This irreverent, hilarious comedy film actually follows the story of the hero’s journey quite closely. A spoof of the earlier airline disaster movie Zero Hour! (1957), Airplane! follows former fighter pilot Ted Striker as he boards a plane in a desperate attempt to keep his ex-girlfriend, Elaine, who is working as a flight attendant, from leaving him. Struggling with the guilt of a command decision he made that saw his entire squadron destroyed, Ted is forced to grapple with his fears and take control of the plane when the flight crew becomes incapacitated due to bad fish. Well-known for throwing silly jokes at the audience non-stop, Airplane! has earned its reputation as one of the funniest films ever made.

5. The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix follows the hero’s journey almost step by step. In it, regular office worker Thomas Anderson moonlights as a hacker known as Neo. When he is contacted by the mysterious and seemingly superhuman Trinity and Morpheus, Neo learns that the world in which humans live is a massive simulation run by machines and that he may be “the chosen One” who will save humanity from its prison. The film adheres to the death and rebirth aspect of the hero’s journey, as only through doing so can Neo become what he is destined to be. With a strong story, deep philosophy and jaw-dropping special effects, The Matrix remains a touchstone of cinematic brilliance that has kept audiences talking for years.

6. The Lion King (1994)

Disney’s The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young lion from the Pride Lands, as he learns to follow in his father’s footsteps to become king. Wrenched from his childhood life when his treacherous uncle Scar murders his father, Simba flees from the Pride Lands to the jungle where he would rather start a new life. But as the rightful king, he learns that he cannot hide from his destiny forever and that he must return to the Pride Lands and confront Scar once and for all. A classic animated film with beautiful animation, an unforgettable story and a stellar soundtrack, The Lion King will long be remembered as one of the best animated films ever made.

7. Avatar (2009)

James Cameron’s Avatar turned heads when it was released in 2009 for the film’s astonishing special effects which revolutionized motion capture technology. The hero of the story is Jake Sully, a former Marine who has been rendered paraplegic. He is sent to the alien world of Pandora as part of a program to put human beings in control of artificial bodies of the indigenous Na’vi that can survive in the planet’s environment. Jake begins seeing Pandora in a different light through his interactions with the Na’vi woman Neytiri and, realizing that plundering the planet for its natural resources is wrong, Jake seeks his atonement by fighting with the Na’vi to protect their home.

8. Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

Aside from science fiction and fantasy films, war movies are another genre where the hero’s journey story is common. Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson, is based on the true story of World War II medic Desmond Doss, the only recipient of the Medal of Honor who joins the war efforts as a conscientious objector. Doss signs up to become a combat medic after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor but steadfastly refuses to take life, which earns him scorn and even arrest. After sticking to his pledge and saving dozens of people during the Battle of Okinawa, he returns home to have his heroism finally recognized.

9. Spirited Away (2001)

Winner of the second-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Spirited Away is the crowning achievement of Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, who has had a long and storied career producing lauded, beloved films. The hero of the story is 10-year-old Chihiro, who, along with her parents, wanders into the spirit world. When her parents are turned into pigs as punishment after eating food that doesn’t belong to them, she is left alone and afraid. With the aid of her helper, the mysterious young man Haku, she begins working at a bathhouse under the eye of the sinister Yubaba. Having to stay in this strange new world, Chihiro must adapt and grow if there is to be any hope of saving her parents and returning to the human world.

10. The Hunger Games Series (2012-2015)

Living in one of the poorest districts of the dystopian nation Panem, Katniss Everdeen receives her call to adventure when her younger sister is selected to participate in the titular Hunger Games. A brutal competition where children fight to the death for the entertainment of Panem’s elite, Katniss does the only thing she can – volunteers to take her sister’s place. Suddenly thrust in front of the cameras, she quickly becomes a real symbol for a growing resistance movement against the Capitol. Challenged by the part she must play and the horrors she witnesses, she is forever changed by her experiences.

19 Animated Disney Movies based on Mythology

Disney has used mythology as a springboard to create many animated movies. Myths and legends have been an inspiration for the writers of the company, often using them as the basis of their scenarios. In this blog post, we’re going to explore 10 Disney movies based on mythology.

One of my favorite Disney creations is the character of Scrooge McDuck. Carl Barks penned down the infamous, super-rich character for Walt Disney back in the 1940s. Soon, plenty of writers used the caricature of the business magnate to outline numerous adventures.

But what I find interesting beyond his stereotypical frugality and misery trademark is the way he gained his wealth, as well as his backstory.

Well, he’s the quintessential mythological hero!

Don Rosa wrote “ The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck ”. A 12-story series detailing the rise and fall of the infamous adventure capitalist. In these chapters, we see the monomyth unfolding .

A young man, naive but ambitious, embarks on a journey across the world. We see our hero slowly gaining experience. Most importantly, we notice the psychological transformation.

The depth and layers of this mythological epic were surprising, to say the least. Concepts like hubris and nemesis, the unknown, the divine intervention jump out of the comic strips. 

Perhaps Scrooge deserves his own post. But my point is that Disney always sought out these kinds of characters, dipped into the mechanics of Homeric literature and ancient mythology.

Soon, I began noticing this pattern in every Disney project. 

In some cases, it was blatantly obvious that they were pastiching certain myths!

Let me give you a few examples.

1. The Lion King

The Lion King is a story about betrayal, friendship, and the power of unity. Most importantly, it’s a coming of age film, based on the journey of Simba and his coronation to King of the Jungle.

But underneath the beautiful animations, the catchy songs, and the talking jungle animals, there’s a deeper narrative at play:

The Myth of Osiris.

Egyptian cosmogony finds footing in the plains of Pride Rock, and each character is a one to one representation of the Egyptian Pantheon.

• Mufasa is Osiris
• Scar is Set
• Simba is Horus
• Rafiki is Thoth
• Nala is Isis
• The Hyenas are Annubis and Wepwamet

There are multiple instances where the writers hint at the similarities between the Lion King and the Solar Cult. 

The Circle of Life and Ma’at, the betrayal of Scar, the spirits of Simba’s ancestors and the double crown of Horus, etc.

2. Hercules

Well, this is self-evident!

Disney takes one of the most famous Greek heroes and adds its own spin to his mythology.

We observe how the demi-god fulfils his destiny by undergoing training with Philoctetes. Eventually, he goes through with the infamous twelve labours.

Not only that, he fights the Titans, primordial beings preceding the Olympians, and saves Megara from Hades’ underworld.

While the film diverges from classical Greek mythology, the essential themes are intact. The psychological transformation of the hero remains at the center of the plot.

One of the highest-grossing Disney films, Aladdin borrows its plot from Arabic folklore, “The Book of One Thousand and One Nights” or “Arabian Nights”.

While the original story takes place in  “somewhere in China”,  the essence remains the same. A young man stumbles upon a powerful artefact containing two Djinns; powerful beings that can allegedly grant you three wishes.

He uses the lesser Djinn to help his mother. Eventually, the more powerful spirit emerges from the mystical lamp and gives him power and wealth. 

Without spoiling the rest of the story, we see a lot of the common mythological concepts regarding power, free will, and retribution.

Disney did a great job of creating an entertaining version of it, albeit not without a handful of inaccuracies.

4. Peter Pan

Ah, everyone knows this rascal, right?

Peter Pan is the symbol of eternal adolescence. The inability to grow up and mature is both a blessing and a curse. 

While Barrie’s character seems unique, if we consider the name of his character we’ll find the key to his origins!

Pan  was a God in ancient Greek mythology. You don’t hear much about him these days, but at one point the Cult of Pan was quite popular in the Mediterranean area.

He was a satyr, frequently playing the flute and seducing innocent women into the forest.

The second half of Peter Pan’s name is the half of him that’s still one with nature. Unfettered by civilization, he retains the childish, yet solipsistic behavior of a little kid that doesn’t obey social conventions. Not even gravity!

5. The Black Cauldron

Admittedly, a controversial movie that’s hard to digest, I still find it inexplicably interesting.

It’s based on the Prydain Chronicles, a mythopoeic saga that’s heavily influenced by Welsh mythology.

While we don’t have first-hand knowledge of the stories and myths of Celtic Birttons – mainly because they relied on oral tradition – we do have some information from Druids and priests from the medieval era.

6. Fantasia

This symphonic panorama best encapsulates how Disney infused its stories with myths.

Each part of it is a quick overview of different theological and mythological perspectives. We begin with the more abstracted philosophy of creation, often encountered in Easter religions.

But we quickly return to the animistic, Celtic tradition, where nature reigns supreme as the fairies and creatures of the forest dance frantically.

Fantasia was developed as an extended film of “Sorcerer’s Apprentice”, i.e. Mickey Mouse. A zealot, a beginner magician dabbling with powers beyond his control, the message of Shelley’s titular work Frankenstein, as well as the Hebrew Golem, echoes throughout this segment.

Then we have a rundown of Greek and Roman mythology with Zeus, Apollo, and Bacchus making their appearance.

Without getting too much into details, Fantasia ends with a revelatory resolution embedded in Christian theology that unites all these rhizomatic religions.

I just realized that Frozen first came out 9 years ago! Feeling old yet?

I still remember how quickly it became a cultural phenomenon. A movie that has been in the making for nearly 50 years, Frozen relies heavily on the mythology of the “Snow Queen”, first put to paper by Hans Christian Andersen.

But that story is dipped in a cultural and mythological context, mainly that of Norse pagan mythology .

Concepts like the Wild Hunt, the world of Niflheim, and the archetypal Witch looking to take over the world.

The songs are very catchy too…

Disney and Folktales

You’ve already noticed that a lot of the examples are part of folklore traditions. Indeed, Disney’s foray into animation was through taking the most famous children’s tales and putting them on screen.

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

The first Disney animation that put the company on the map. The story is based on Grimm Brothers’ work but the roots go back to ancient Greek Mythology and the myth of Chione, recorded in Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

Yet, we encounter a version of this tale in every single country in Europe. 

2. Beauty and the Beast

Another successful hit, Beauty and the Beast was the first animated movie to be nominated for an Oscar. 

Its mythological origins go back to the story of Eros and Psyche.

The heroine is Hua Mulan, a protagonist in the traditional Chinese folktale. Legend says that she took the place of her father in the army, earning the admiration of the generals and Emperor.

Some historians argue that she might have been a real historical figure.

4. The Little Mermaid

Mermaids are a staple mythological creature across cultures. The Little Mermaid seems to be borrowing themes from Greek mythology, mainly Triton, son of Poseidon and God of Mermaids.

Rapunzel is steeped in mythological references.

The “Maiden in the Tower” is a common trope in proto-Indo-Europeans religions. From the Baltic Solar Goddess Saule to Ethinu in Irish mythology, as well as Perseus’ mother, Princess Danae.

But we’re only scratching the surface. Disney has produced dozens of short films based on folklore tales, mainly part of the Silly Symphony series.

The Disneyfication of Mythology

Disney movies are infamous for taking raw material and refining it to the point it’s palpable for all ages.

The issue is that… well, life isn’t always sunny!

One of the purposes of mythology is to reveal the dark side of the human psyche. The same problem occurs with fairy tales, where their original versions were much more “adult”.

In any case, I’m fine with a little editing here and there as long as the main themes and narratives of mythology remain at the core of the story.

After all, there’s always poetic license when it comes to creativity.

‘The Hero’s Journey’, An Animated Look at the 12 Stages That Every Hero Has to Walk Through in Movies

Leiden, Netherlands-based motion designer Iskander Krayenbosch has created “ The Hero’s Journey ,” a great animated look at the 12 stages that every hero has to walk through in movies. Iskander made the animated short as part of a graduation project for HKU University of the Arts Utrecht .

Since the beginning of time people are fascinated by stories of hero’s. But did you know there is a fundamental structure that’s lies beneath all these tales of fantasy. Joseph Campbell, a famous mythologist, was the first to discover similarities within all ancient myths. He called it the Monomyth. According to him there are 12 stages in which every hero has to walk through one way or the other. In the hero’s journey these stages are visualized by using iconic blockbuster movies that follow the same structure of storytelling.

The Hero’s Journey: A Study in Film

Years ago I attended the National Gallery for Art ‘s Summer Workshop focusing on Mythology. I spent a week in Washington, DC with fifty other educators learning from academics, teachers, and visiting every museum in the District. One evening we attended the National Air and Space Museum to see an exhibit highlighting the Joseph Cambell’s The Hero Journey through the lens of George Lucas’ Star Wars.  The exhibit paralleled two stories, making visible a plot structure and trope that plays out continuously in film and story canon.

Joseph Campbell, an American mythological researcher, wrote a famous book entitled The Hero with a Thousand Faces .  As  MythologyTeacher.com points out, “in his lifelong research Campbell discovered many common patterns running through hero myths and stories from around the world.  Years of research lead Campbell to discover several basic stages that almost every hero-quest goes through (no matter what culture the myth is a part of).  He calls this common structure “the monomyth.” It is commonly referred to as “The Hero’s Journey.'”

When George Lucas was writing his drafts of the early Star Wars movies he had read Joseph Campbell’s work and there is a clear structure of the Hero’s Journey in Lucas’ films.

Star Wars is not the only films that follows the Hero’s Journey. Many of Disney’s Films also use this plot structure in their animated feature films: Finding Nemo, Mulan, The Lion King,   The Incredibles , and Moana . Additional movies include Shrek, and Kung Fu Panda . Major feature films like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Spiderman, Matrix, and The Hobbit also follow this trope.

I am using The Hero’s Journey with in my Media Literacy class to teach about plot structure, character motivation, and theme in the stories they write and films they create. I started by asking students to think about what qualities they associate with heroes. Are heroes born or are they made? Are there heroes in real-life or must they be larger-than-life? Who are the heroes in our society.

Students viewed short films about the Hero’s Journey to understand the monomyth. Then we brainstormed possible movies, books, and stories that would fit within this structure. Students were given a graphic organizer of the The Hero’s Journey to map out a text on their own. The graphic organizer on MythologyTeacher.com was clear and specific to help students articulate their understanding. I found out among my students that not many have seen animated Disney Films, The Hunger Games , or the new Spiderman Homecoming  movie. With this in mind, I will be showing the class the movie   Spirited Away by  MIYAZAKI  (2001), one of my favorite filmmakers.

Many of Miyazaki’s films follow the Hero’s Journey and are great to use with students. Once we view a film in it’s entirety together, we will discuss and plot out the Hero’s Journey in the film. Students will use this foundation for writing their own Hero’s Journey story that they will make into a movie. Additionally, students will apply the foundations of film knowledge (Types of Shots, Color, Sound, and Style) to effectively tell their Hero’s Journey story.

The fourth installment in the My Hero Academia franchise is coming to US theaters this fall.

My Hero Academia: You’re Next will premiere October 11, 2024 in North American theaters with English subtitles and dub releases through Toho International ( Godzilla Minus One ), Deadline can exclusively reveal.

“This has encouraged us to bring additional Japanese titles and iconic franchises to US cinemas, and this October, we can’t wait to bring fans My Hero Academia: You’re Next for a nationwide release,” adds Ueda.

After the film’s August 4 Japan release was previously announced, Toho Animation revealed the North American premiere date on Saturday during the My Hero Academia Special Event at the 2024 Anime Expo in Los Angeles.

My Hero Academia was a manga comic book series first released in 2014 that has since sold over 100 million copies worldwide, in addition to several appearances on The New York Times Best Seller list. The franchise spawned an anime TV series in 2016 and three theatrical films: My Hero Academia: Two Heroes (2018), My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (2019) and My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission (2021).
