Mountainsmith Tour

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

Very comfortable convenient lumbar pack for day hikes and touring.

  • Made of recycled material
  • Excellent comfort
  • Well designed pockets and straps

image.jpg

I find it ideal for warm weather day hikes because the pack fits snugly against the small of my back leaving my upper body completely free and ventilated. I have used this on all kinds of hikes and even a 20 mile day hike with absolutely no comfort issues.

This pack is super stable and if you carry water bottles no bigger than 20 oz, then you can even run with this, however I would not recommend serious trail running with this pack. When mounted and sungged up correctly, this pack is extremely comfortable.

There are many design features on this pack that I love.  I like the sleeve between the lumbar where you can store a bandana or eve a rain cover. There are two straps under the bottom that are perfect for a jacket or a even a small pad. There is a main compartment and a separate front pocket.  The front pocket has a bungee strap for even more gear attachemnt.

The total capacity of this pack is 8 Liters according to the specs.  The pack also comes with a well made shoulder strap that buckles to two rings on the top next to the carry handle, making this pack even more versatile, you can use the shoulder strap to carry like a bag, or for extra support if your load is a little heavier. I have never used it.

On each side there are two water bottle pockets that can fit up to a 1L Nalgene  bottle on each side. I find that 20 oz bottles fit best.  There are two cinch straps on each side, one for stabilizing the pack body and one for bringing the load in closer to your hips.  The hip belt is 2 inches wide, with exactly the right amount of padding and secured by a high quality buckle. Once all points are cinched tightly, you have a super stable excellent fitting pack ready to see you through any hiking situation.

Versatility :

For the photographer, there is an accessory called the Kit Cube that fits this pack and is basically a padded insert that you can install in the main compartment of your lumbar pack turning it into a very nice camera bag. The bag will hold a camera body and up to two lenses securely.  The nice thing about this accessory is that it is easily adaptable to your other packs and you can use basically any pack to safely carry your precious photo gear.

This lumbar pack is a high quality product made from recycled materials, that will work very well for many of your excursions.

This pack is very well made, with just the right size for both short hikes, weekend, and in town use. There is enough room to carry two small water bottles, a light jacket or sweater, a book, a packed lunch, wallet etc... I esp. like the Smart Phone storage area in back and brighter interior. The only downside is I wish they made a women's version of this pack, for those with smaller waists, because I've got excess strappage whenever I click the strap, and I'd like to find something to keep it out of the way! Love the Navy blue and royal blue colors. Recommended for larger waisted people!

  • Sturdy material and zippers
  • Great size and colors
  • Sufficient pocket options
  • Too much strap at waist for smaller people
  • Unisex design

With this review I can truly say that I have run this through the ringer for four years and it has never disappointed me. Built sturdy from recycled materials this pack is a great all around bag. The versatility of the Tour with its numerous pockets is astounding.

The design is basic, having a main access zippered pouch that has a smaller incidentals pouch contained with in. The outside has a small pouch on the center front that is more than enough room for trail snacks and a small camera among other things. Each side of the bag has a bomber mesh pouch made for water bottles, and the elastic draw cords make it possible to completely close off the pouches should you have other items stored in them.

But Mountainsmith didn't stop there, they added four gear loops to the front two top/two bottom of the bag as well as webbing to bottom for additional exterior storage.

The padding on the back of the bag is supple and allows you to carry bulky items with out great discomfort. The Tour comes with a single shoulder strap that is decent, but nothing extraordinary and unfortunately the pad on it seems to always shift onto my back or chest instead of staying firmly on top of my shoulder. I never picked up the dual shoulder harness however I am certain that it would simply further my enjoyment of this bag. By not only making it more stable on my back but also allowing more items to be secured to the top of the pack.

I have used this bag as an everyday man purse as well as a overnight pack. This is my primary go to bag when ever I travel as well. I have traveled extensively with this containing all of my gear. On a recent overnight trip I was able to fit my tarp tent, food, stove, water, extra clothes etc... and was not feeling that I was lacking anything.

While it is not the best for long miles (it shifts a bit) it is a perfectly capable bag for almost anything.

Mountainsmith is an outstanding company that is dedicated to improving there products through environmentally sound means. So much so that they were awarded the Backpacker Editor's Choice Green award in 2008!

If you are on the fence about spending the cash for one of these bags, my advice to you is STOP WHINING get the pack. You won't be disappointed! It is well worth the money and should be looked on as an investment to be enjoyed for years and years to come!

First, I'm a day hiker only, no overnights. I check out many backpacks and listen to everyone on this site.

My main concern was water, I stuck with my first statement that I wanted to carry 64 oz of water. I know that I use around 16oz of water per hour. I also wanted to carry my GPS, camera and binoculars. I keep the 10 essentials, plus few extras.

The Tour has a zippered front panel which I keep my first aid kit, sunscreen, chapstick, bug spray ect.. The larger zippered main compartment I keep socks, bags, food, gps, camera, etc. The Tour has two compression straps under the bag that I can strap jacket, or anything I want. The back has elastic rigging that more clothes can go on, or gear.

The feel of the pack is great, very little weight on my hips and I jump around trying to shift the bag and it stayed put. I keep two 32 oz bottles, I'm able to remove left or right bottle with one hand and put it back with no problems, the space is big enough to put 40oz bottles, I know this works because I tested it out at REI.

I got the strapette with this bag and I'll write a review for this item later. If you don't plan to carry larger loads in this pack I wouldn't buy the strapette, I would use the shoulder strap that comes with the bag, but when you get to the 15lb or greater I would use the strapette.

I practice putting on and taking it off before I went on my first hike, it was dark and I found it very easy to put on, the only thing I would recommend is to remove the water bottles when putting it on. I did this in the dark, it took just a few seconds and I was on my way. The waistbelt has two points were you can put more gear, I put my knife on the right side.

This bag fits my needs. There is just a few things I'll add, one is a GPS holder on the Strapette and maybe carabiners for the water bottles and/or gear. I went on a 6 mile hike with no problems, I have enough room for my gear, and if I got the Day version I feel it would have been too big.

The workmanship seems to be very good, and it has a lifetime warranty. I can't ask for more. here is a link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_-9B4B53gs

i bought this in brand new condition at a yard sale for $2!

the owner was in jail on a DVC and his ex was selling off all his stuff...

plus side, i got it cheap!

downside, i cannot get comfortable with more than a minimal amount of gear...

even the 10 essentials are marginal as far as comfort goes..

quality is typical mountainsmith, excellent thruout...

it seems that lumbar packs and myself cannot get along...

why, i don't know...

by the time i add 2 - 1 liter bottles i really begin to notice it...

the weight of the windshell made it a complete pita...

plus side, lots of adjustments for fine tuning the fit...

downside, the wasist belt constantly undoes itself from the fittings...

the ends were not sewn over, which allows them to work loose...

i cannot fault the quality of the materials or construction except for the waist belt problem...

i understand they've made some changes so the latest packs may be significantly different...

i will give this a 3.5 overall because it is way above the other lumbar packs i've seen/tried...

the shoulder straps might make a difference, but i am too cheap to risk the $$$...

like anything else, try before you buy, if i had paid full retail i would be seriously PO'd..

if you want a light, low profile pack this is a good place to start...

Source: bought via a "pro deal" Price Paid: $64.99

I am currently living and working in Germany therefore my friends and I get a lot of travel time in during the weekends. I've had my Mountainsmith for over two years now and literally 'wouldn't leave home without it!' It can be used over the shoulder like a purse, carried like a briefcase or lumbar pack, worn like a backpack (with optional straps)...or even attached to your main backpack when on-the-go.

It has room for money, point-and-shoot camera, passport, water bottles etc. I have NEVER had anything taken from me while wearing it...waist strap holds it secure and I put a small padlock through the zipper closures when in crowded situations...no problem.

My dog ate one of the side bungies and the company repaired and returned it before my next trip! Wear and tear...hardly noticable and it's been all over Europe, the US and Puerto Rico several times!

A good knock around pack, for when a backpack is too much.

  • Lots of storage space
  • Quality construction
  • A bit tough to fit properly

This is my first lumbar pack having only used backpacks for mountain adventures. This pack is surprisingly rugged, good looking and will do the job of transporting a lot of stuff.

I wouldn't recommend it for a long hike as it can carry only so much water, but overall this is a solid pack. One quibble, it really doesn't rest "flat" against my back so I often use the strap that comes with to balance it out. I definitely might be doing it wrong though ;)

Source: received it as a personal gift

Best lumbar pack I have ever owned; been hiking since 1995. Provides enough space for all the essentials, my rain jacket, hat and anything else I might need. Plus it cinches down to almost nothing when empty.

  • Sturdy construction
  • Internal storage pockets
  • Adjustable shoulder and lumbar straps
  • Lumbar support

Quality Mountainsmith fabrication and you can't beat the price or the warranty! Great product for beginner to expert outdoor enthusiasts.

Source: bought it new Price Paid: $75

Perfect for day hikes. Great size.

  • Comfortable

I was debating between this and the larger Day model. I am glad I went with the Tour. It can store plenty of gear for day hikes and is still compact enough. Everything I was looking for.

I place the shoulder strap pad on my neck and wrap the strap around the front of my shoulders, kind of like a backpack. With it just barely snugged it takes some weight off the hips with heavy loads.

Source: bought it new Price Paid: 55$

This is an extremely comfortable pack. It has a large omni belt with delta stabilizers to secure a load to your body. This pack is great for mountain biking and hiking because it stays close to your body, and doesn't move around. It is a little spendy, but well worth the price.

Daily Wrap Up

Change Text Size

Things to Know

  • Despite a double bogey at the par-3 12th hole, Richard Green cards a career-low 9-under 62 to take his first 36-hole lead in his bid for a maiden PGA TOUR Champions victory.
  • Angling for a third career win on PGA TOUR Champions, Ken Tanigawa aces the par-3 16th en route to his PGA TOUR Champions career-low score of 9-under 61; also ties the Canyon Meadows G&CC course record.
  • Ken Duke opens his title defense in 69-67 (T37/-4) to extend his perfect streak of scores in the 60s in the event to 11.

Richard Green (1st/-13)

  • With birdies on nine of his first 11 holes, six of which were consecutive (Nos. 6-11), the 53-year-old Australian signed for a 9-under 62, supplanting his previous career-low score of 63
  • A double-bogey-five at the par-3 12th was his lone blemish in round two
  • Through 36 holes, he has played Canyon Meadows’ front nine in 10-under-par, as opposed to 3-under on Nos. 10-18
  • Best 36-hole position in a 54-hole event on PGA TOUR Champions before this week was T2 at the 2023 Dominion Energy Charity Classic (finished T2)
  • In his only previous Rogers Charity Classic start, finished T12 in 2023 on the strength of a final-round 6-under 64
  • Three-times a runner up in 46 PGA TOUR Champions starts before this week, remains in search of his first win
  • Two of those runner-up finishes are among six top-10 finishes this season: KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex; comes off a T8 at last week’s Boeing Classic

Additional Notes

  • Making his second start in the Rogers Charity Classic and first since a T47 in 2023, Boo Weekley (T2/-12) improved on an opening-round 5-under 65 with a 63 in round two; continues in his effort for a first PGA TOUR Champions top-10 finish and victory in his 23rd start this week
  • After a 1-under start on his outgoing nine holes, Steven Alker birdied six holes on Nos. 10-18 to sign for a 7- under 63 and move to T2 at 7-under 128; in his only previous Rogers Charity Classic start, finished T21 in 2023
  • Beginning his round on No. 10, Ken Tanigawa (T4/-11) aced the par-3 16th from 210 yards using a 5-iron en route to a bogey-free and PGA TOUR Champions career-low 9-under 61 (previously 64); the 61 also matches Canyon Meadows’ course record; each of his three top-10 finishes this season came in consecutive starts in June; in his most recent four starts since that stretch, a 56th at last week’s Boeing Classic marks his best
  • With only one bogey through 36 holes, World Golf Hall of Fame member Padraig Harrington signed for a 6- under 64 in Saturday’s second round to move to T4 at 11-under 129; this week’s Rogers Charity Classic marks his second start in the event and comes after finished T3 in 2022; vying for his third win of the season (Hoag Classic, DICK’S Open), which would place him in a tie for the most with Ernie Els and Calgary’s Stephen Ames
  • PGA Professional Jason Caron birded five holes on the back nine (Nos. 10, 11, 13, 16, 18) to close with a 6- under 64 and sits T4; seeks his first PGA TOUR Champions win (4 starts); best finish (T4/2024 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship)
  • Vying to become the season’s first four-time winner, Canadian Golf Hall of Fame member Stephen Ames opened his 10th Rogers Charity Classic with scores of 67-66 to sit T14 at 7-under 133; previous top-10 finishes in the event: T5/2015, T6/2021; comes off his third win of the season at last week’s Boeing Classic; with a win this week, would join Els (Principal Charity Classic, American Family Insurance Championship) as players to win in consecutive weeks this season.
  • After rounds of 68-67 to reach 5-under 135, Canada’s Mike Weir will head into the final of his fourth Rogers Charity Classic T25 at 5-under 135; lone top-10 finish in the first three, a T9, came in his first start of 2021.
  • Playing on a sponsor exemption in his third PGA TOUR Champions event, standout Calgarian golfer Steve Blake improved on an opening-round 79 with a 74 in round two; in September 2023, Blake was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and given a prognosis of having 12 to 24 months to live.
  • Other Canadians in the field: Alan McLean (T14/-7), Gordon Burns (75th/+6).

History of Kemerovo Oblast

People began to settle in what is now the Kemerovo region several thousand years ago. The indigenous peoples of the region were Shortsy and Teleuts. In 1618, Russians founded Kuznetsky stockaded town in the south of the present region to protect Russian lands from the raids of the Mongols and Jungars. In 1698, Mariinsk was founded.

In 1721, Mikhailo Volkov found “burning mountain” (a burning coal seam) on the banks of the Tom River and thus became the person who discovered the Kuzbass coal deposits. Industrial development of this land started at the end of the 18th century.

During the 19th century, the territory of the Kemerovo region was part of the Tomsk province. During this period, the first industrial enterprises appeared here: Tomsk ironworks, Gavrilovsky and Gurievsky silver plants, Suharinsky and Salairsky mines. Construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway was one of the main reasons for the rapid development of the local industry.

More historical facts…

In Soviet times, the region became part of the West Siberian krai, and then - Novosibirsk oblast. The development of the coal, metallurgical and chemical industries continued: Kemerovo Coke Plant, Kuznetsk Metallurgical Plant, a lot of new mines. The workers’ settlements built near the industrial enterprises quickly obtained the status of towns: Kiselyovsk, Osinniki, Krasnobrodsky, Tashtagol, Kaltan, Mezhdurechensk and others.

During the Second World War, this region was a major supplier of coal and metal. More than 50 thousand tanks and 45 thousand aircraft were produced using steel from Novokuznetsk. 71 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Kuzbass from the occupied regions, most of them remained in the region after the war.

In 1943, Kemerovo Oblast became a separate region that included 17.5% of the territory and 42% of the total population of Novosibirsk Oblast. After the war, the region continued to grow rapidly. On September 18, 1984, about 100 km from Kemerovo, a peaceful underground nuclear explosion was carried out, the power of the explosive device was 10 kilotons.

In the 1990s, the region’s economy declined. However, by the end of the 20th century, there were some positive developments - the development of the coal industry in the first place. Special attention was paid to the development of open-pit coal mining, as a more effective and safe way.

Kemerovo Oblast - Features

Kemerovo Oblast is one of the few Russian regions that has a recognized and well-known alternative name “Kuzbass” - the abbreviation of “Kuznetsk coal basin” occupying a large part of the territory of the region.

It is the most densely populated part of Siberia. The length of the region from north to south is about 500 km, from west to east - 300 km. Russians make up more than 90% of the population. There are small nations of Shortsy, Teleuts, Siberian Tatars who have preserved their cultural traditions.

The climate is sharply continental with long cold winters and warm short summers. The average temperature in January is minus 17-20 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 17-18 degrees Celsius.

Today, about 86% of the population of Kemerovo Oblast lives in cities and towns making it one of the most urbanized regions of Russia. The largest cities are Kemerovo (548,000), Novokuznetsk (540,000), Prokopievsk (185,000), Mezhdurechensk (95,400), Leninsk-Kuznetsky (91,600), Kisilyovsk (83,700), Yurga (79,700), Belovo (70,100), Anzhero-Sudzhensk (65,700).

Kemerovo Oblast plays a significant role in Russian industry. The following mineral resources are mined here: coal, gold, silver, iron ore, manganese ore, aluminum, nepheline ore, lead, zinc, barite, quartz, limestone, clay, dolomite, sand.

Meghan Markle Taps a Classic Outfit Formula, the Blazer and Button-Up, for Colombia Tour School Visit

Her second day look is decidedly low-key.

Meghan Markle in colombia

It's day two of Colombian Fashion Week—aka Meghan Markle's Colombia tour . Yesterday, the Duchess of Sussex kicked off her journey, which will take her and Prince Harry through Bogotá, Cartagena, and Cali. Thus far, her trip has been a parade of fashion moments and classic outfit formulas made modern, with the Duchess wearing not one, but three different outfits in one day.

Naturally, day two is off to a stylish start. But before we dive into her latest look—which includes sentimental butterfly earrings from Princess Diana 's own collection—here's a quick recap for the girlies. The first stop of her tour was tea time with Vice President Francia Márquez. For the occasion, Markle wore a sleek navy blue tailored vest set from Veronica Beard (which is still available to shop, FYI ).

From there, Markle changed into a more daring look (by royal standards), debuting a brocade cut-out dress by Johanna Ortiz . She ended the day in her third and final look, a zesty pumpkin spice-colored co-ord .

Meghan Markle wore three outfits for the first day of her Colombia tour, including this Victoria Beckham top and La Ligne pants.

That brings us to day two. Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry began the festivities with a visit to Colegio La Giralda, a charter school. The couple participated with students in several activities, including a visit to the school's urban garden, a performance of traditional Colombian music and dance, and puzzle time. Duchess Meghan even practiced speaking Spanish with students.

Meghan Markle looked the part of a very cool teacher for her tour about the grounds, in a linen blazer with a white button-up shirt underneath. Her outermost layer came from Loro Piana, the quiet luxury brand she's been wearing quite a lot lately—including on the tour's first day, in the form of a leather bag with a milky white manicure to match.

The remainder of her look kept the scholarly-chic energy going with tapered black trousers and cap-toe Chanel flats. (Exact credits for her top and pants, styled by Jamie Mizrahi, are still under wraps at press time.) Markle paired her down-to-earth outfit with a low, side-parted bun and minimal makeup. She also wore her gold Cartier Tank watch—the same model Princess Diana favored. A pair of the late royal's butterfly earrings shimmered on Markle's ears.

Prince Harry also got the collegiate style memo, wearing a blue button-down shirt and green trousers.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry smiled and hugged students, speaking with them in their classroom and throughout the grounds. Education is a major focus of their trip: The day before, they met students at another Bogotá charter school . Markle said the students were "impressive, smart and savvy."

Meghan Markle completed puzzles with students and practiced her Spanish.

Duchess Meghan's latest, low-key look picks up a common thread in her best outfits: It's built with all-time wardrobe classics, while still feeling fresh. It's also only the first outfit royal fans have seen from day two of the tour—meaning another outfit is just around the corner.
