Wondering where to let your hippy spirit run free? San Francisco is an obvious choice , but there are enclaves all over the world where peace and love are rife. Here are 20 of our favourites:

1. Goa, India

2. negril, jamaica, 3. glastonbury, england, 4. cape maclear, malawi, 5. kathmandu, nepal, 6. dahab, egypt, 7. panajachel, guatemala, 8. ko pha ngan, thailand, 9. siargao, philippines, 10. dali, china, 11. eugene, oregon, usa, 12. jericoacoara, brazil, 13. the cyclades, greece, 14. lamu, kenya, 15. california, usa, 16. christiania, copenhagen, denmark, 17. byron bay, australia, 18. chefchaouen, morocco, 19. istanbul, turkey, 20. gili islands, indonesia.

It may be known as a party hotspot today, but Goa used to be firmly off the beaten track. The relaxed local culture, delicious cuisine and endless white-sand beaches have always attracted chilled-out travellers in need of a break, with an optional side of spiritual exploration.

Whether or not you’re interested in the nightlife, luckily there’s still much of the old, laidback Goa in evidence for the independent-minded traveller today.

This gorgeous beach may be over-developed in some places now, but it goes on for so indulgently long (it’s around four miles end to end) that you only need to wander a bit further to find yourself some peace and quiet.

If you’re feeling particularly active you can join in the water sports on offer, but you may find your schedule is soon pretty packed with sunbathing, walking and, if you're that way inclined, some meditating on this gorgeous beach in Jamaica .

Hear Glastonbury and you think of the festival. Of course, anyone can find their inner happy hippy at this world-famous music and arts festival, especially over in the Green Fields, but this is a year-round destination.

It’s at the heart of the "Isle of Avalon", an area rich in myths and Arthurian legends which attracts Pagans, Wiccans and all manner of New-Agers. Head up to Glastonbury Tor for ley-lines and gorgeous views, or wander along the hippy-tastic High Street.

Diving, kayaking, walking, snorkelling... there’s plenty to do in Cape Maclear, but you may be content just lazing lakeside in a hammock, drinking in the stunning view of Africa ’s third-largest, second-deepest lake. The area’s stayed pretty rustic despite its popularity with backpackers from around the world, and it’s a truly chilled, calm place to while away some time.

Nepal has had many troubles to contend with, not least the 2015 earthquake, but it’s always attracted spiritually curious travellers and probably always will. After all, there’s nowhere in the world quite like it – a truly awe-inspiring natural setting with a view across the Himalayas, a city full of treasures with a kind and welcoming population, and a key site in both Buddhism and Hindusim.

It’s also the perfect base for continuing your spiritual exploration, with treks to Pokhara and onwards to the Himalayas.

Diving in the clear waters of the Gulf of Aqaba; sharing shisha with friends in the evening; sleeping under the stars in Bedouin tents… The laidback pace of life makes Dahab a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy your environment.

Though unrest in the region has resulted in fewer visitors in recent years, there’s little doubt they’ll find their way back soon enough to Egypt .

During the sixties the lakeside Guatemalan town of Panajachel was so popular with itinerant hippies (mostly wandering down the continent from the USA ) that it became known as ‘Gringotenango’.

As the civil war intensified visitor numbers dropped, but from the mid-nineties travellers started coming back in search of relaxation, stunning views of Lago de Atitlán and… well, what else do you need?

Just above Ko Samui in the Gulf of Thailand is this small island, a classic stop on the Hippy Trail. Somewhere between 1983 and 1993 (no one seems sure of the exact date, or particularly bothered) a few travellers started playing music on the beach during the full moon, and year on year the event grew and attracted more visitors. The rest (hard partying, day-glo, chemically-enhanced) is history and Ko Pha Ngan is now one of Thailand 's most visited islands.

For real seclusion, head to Siargao Island in the Philippines . If it’s peace and quiet that you’re after, though, maybe avoid September – the island became famous after word spread among the world’s surfers that there’s a break so good they called it "Cloud 9", and the Siargao Cup global surfing competition is now held there annually.

For the rest of the year it’s sedate and beautiful, a perfect place to find some zen.

A low-key city by Erhai Lake, Dali has long been a popular stop for backpackers and hippies. It’s still not overwhelmed by tourism, despite its gorgeous surroundings and intriguing traditional architecture (the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple are a well-known symbol of the city), which means it’s still a great place to find a bit of calm.

Where Portland is hipster, Eugene is resolutely hippy. It’s the place to go for all your tie-dyeing needs, not to mention New Age philosophy, communal living and herbal remedies. There’s a lot to attract any type of traveller, but to get the most out of the city’s gorgeous natural setting and strong artistic community you should absolutely embrace your inner hippy.

Known for its dazzlingly white beach and impressive sand dunes, Brazil ’s beautiful Jericoacoara has been pulling in hippies and surfers for years. It’s a great spot for windsurfing, as well, and of course for walking, sunbathing and any other chilled-out beach activity you can think of.

It’s also a national park, so it’s reasonably safe from development for now.

Mykonos has always been a traditional stop on the Hippy Trail, but today is perhaps a bit overdeveloped and party-focused for some tastes. Luckily, there are other destinations in this group of gorgeous Greek islands .

Keep going to Andros, for instance, and you’ll find peace, quiet and stunning walks. If you’re really after isolation, though, aim for Anafi. It’s the last ferry stop, and the perfect place for some reflection and relaxation.

The small island of Lamu in Kenya has long been a prime spot for hippy travellers, and though there have been security concerns recently, it’s not hard to see the attraction. There’s not much to do other than take in the gorgeous medieval town, take leisurely dhow rides to nearby islands, and just chill out, man...

California is in many ways the perfect place to find your hippy self. The most hardcore of hippies can chill out in accepting, alternative San Francisco ; those who still love a bit of luxury can head to LA to dabble in meditation and organic green juices; literary hippies can go all Dharma Bums and scale the Matterhorn; and anyone at all can find a bit of inner peace wandering the stunning Yosemite National Park .

Copenhagen is a pretty perfect city for hippy-minded individuals: great cycling, lots of greenery, good food and a thriving music scene. If you really want to get into the hippy lifestyle, though, you need to head to Christiania .

This colourful city-within-a-city has been a commune since 1971, and is showing no signs of slowing down. It’s autonomous and self-governing, to an extent, and a fascinating place to see a long-term social experiment in action.

Byron Bay means one thing: surfing. It’s famous for its long, sandy beach and a local life so laidback it’s almost horizontal. If you feel like even this New Agey, chilled out surfer town isn’t quite hippy enough for you, head to nearby Nimbin for colourful murals, dreadlocks and tie-dye galore.

Nimbin also happens to be known as the marijuana capital of Australia, even holding a "Mardi Grass" festival in May.

Morocco has long been known as a destination for travellers who want to get off the beaten track. Marrakesh and Fez are the obvious places to go, but the travelling hippies of the world have long-preferred Chefchaouen . It’s cheap, cheerful and full of open-air markets and beautiful pale blue buildings. What’s not to like?

The only city in the world to sit on two continents, Istanbul has long intrigued and enticed independent travellers. The "gateway to Asia" was a key point on the Hippy Trail of the sixties, a fork in the road from where some would head back into Europe and others would look onwards to India , Thailand and Vietnam . Today it retains its independent vibe, attracting hippies, hedonists, artists and romantics from all around the world.

These secluded islands off Lombok in Indonesia are pretty perfect if you want to get away from it all. Backpackers and hippies started heading there in the seventies and eighties, and now the islands are an established destination.

They’re perfect for diving, lounging on the beach, and simply doing nothing at all.

11 Hippie Destinations Around The World

It was in the 1960s that the hippie culture made its way into the world. It was all about free souls who wandered around the world without any worldly attachments. And let us say, what an amazing thought and lifestyle it must be! Slowly and steadily, one wanderer met another, gradually forming a group that marked the beginnings of a new revolutionary era, The Hippie Revolution. It might have started in Africa, but hippie destinations sprung up in several parts of the world, including Spain, India, and many more countries. That’s how the hippie culture still exists and is so prevalent around the world, and that too in large numbers.

The 60s might be long gone, but the hippie culture has stuck around and still holds the same allure as it did back then. In fact, it’s nothing less than a religion, especially since this is the woke-as-hell 21st century. Do you want to embrace your inner hippie and go on a hippie hiatus? Here are the 11 most exciting and intriguing hippie destinations around the world, including some famous ones in India!

Table of contents

Chefchaouen, morocco, ibiza, spain, istanbul, turkey, negril, jamaica, eugene, oregon, dahab, egypt, cape maclear, malawi, auroville, india, ko pha ngan, thailand.

We begin this list of hippie destinations with a city in Africa, where the hippie movement is said to have originated. Behold Chefchaouen in northern Morocco , which could very well be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Chefchaouen is Morocco’s Blue City ; literally, the entire city is painted in different hues of blue – walls, doors, windows, et al! Later on, it gradually welcomed Jews and Christian converts as well. It’s no wonder it’s one of the Most Colorful Places On Earth .

Founded way back in 1471, the city’s origins were of a small Moorish fortress that saw exiled refugees from Spain . Today, it’s cheap, has a carefree spirit, and is full of open-air markets selling Boho stuff and handicraft products. Ding ding ding! Basically, it ticks all the boxes for being the perfect hippie destination, with the additional perk of not selling or hyping itself. Plus, you get to do nothing all day long happily! That sounds just perfect.

We can have no list of hippie destinations without including one of the OG hippie destinations in India, Goa. Goa might be a party hotspot today, but when it began its meteoric rise as a hippie destination, it was firmly off-the-beaten-path. The gorgeous sandy beaches, delectable seafood cuisine, and relaxed local culture with Portuguese influences, with the addition of delicious local alcohol, are what attracted chilled-out travelers. Even if you aren’t interested in nightlife, there are lots of Things To Do In Goa for the independent-minded traveler even today. Discovering Goa’s rich architectural past, especially its UNESCO-listed churches and the city of Old Goa, is one of the best things to do on Goa’s hippie trail today.

No list of hippie destinations in the world is complete without mentioning the king of them all, the party-central and psychedelic Ibiza . Part of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Balearic Sea, Ibiza is a lot more than just partying and EDM music. Back in the ’60s, when the culture was just evolving, Ibiza was where raves began and is the go-to spot for all European hippies. Not only does it have lounges and clubs, but it also has wonderful shopping places and marketplaces. But, some say Ibiza’s bohemian culture goes back to the 1930s when Avante-Garde European artists who fled authoritarian regimes found peace and unleashed their creativity on this island. In fact, Ibiza of the 1960s is where adlib fashion was born. Today, the island is famous for its flea markets that sell everything from fashion, original costume jewelry, pottery, handicrafts, and even exotic musical instruments. Rad!

Byzantium to Constantinople to Istanbul , the world’s only city to sit on two continents, has long entranced and intrigued world travelers. The “Gateway to Asia” was one of the most important points on the original overland Hippie Trail that traversed Asia and Europe. Between the ’50s and the 70s, Istanbul in Turkey radiated an independent vibe, attracting romantics, artists, hedonists, and of course, hippies from all around the world. In fact, Istanbul was the fork in the road, from where the road split into the northern and southern routes through Asia. In fact, the melting pot of a Turkish city had, and even today has gathering spots for hippies, such as Yener’s Café and The Pudding Shop. Pilgrims driving Volkswagen vans or old cars would stop here to swap stories and share expenses with other travelers.

Negril, Jamaica, is one of the most localized hippie destinations in the world. After all, it’s a beach – and a long, long one at that! Also known as the Seven Mile Beach, it’s one of the Top Things To Do In Jamaica and is the original Jamaican hippie paradise. In fact, there was no main road connecting the then-rural backwater Negril to the rest of Jamaica until the 1970s there was. So, many adventurous travelers would arrive by local ferry, drop out, and get high. Some of these early pioneers even included Vietnam war vets who were looking for a permanent escape from the crazy world they’d left behind.

Slowly, bars, hotels, and guesthouses sprang up, and a road was built, cementing this place on the global hippie trail. If you find it over-commercialized in some places, walk along the beach. You’ll certainly find a spot where you can find some peace and quiet.

It might sound surprising, but the little town of Eugene in the heart of Oregon is one of the happiest and happiest towns in America. Neighboring Portland might be hipster, but Eugene is an out-and-out hippie! It’s the place to go for all your tie-dyeing requirements, not to mention herbal remedies and New Age philosophy. People here take out-of-the-box ideas of living seriously with eastern healing and communal living. What’s more, the city is home to a strong artistic community, whom you’ll hear talking about healing crystals and philosophy at the local dive bar. If that wasn’t enough, the city’s stunning natural setting is the perfect backdrop for embracing your inner hippie.

One of the most gorgeous hippie destinations is also one of the Breathtaking Places You Must See In Egypt , Dahab. The laidback resort town overlooks the clear waters of the Gulf of Aqaba. One of the top things to do here is diving in the clear waters all day long. Later on, you can share sheesha with your new friends and sleep under the stars in Bedouin tents. This makes Dahab the perfect place to sit back, unwind, and experience the hippie way of life. The golden sandy beaches boast incredible views of the Gulf of Aqaba, all the way to the Hijaz Mountains. What’s more, Dahab is one of the best places to snorkel and scuba dive. For, there are gorgeous marine life and corals right underneath the surface of the water.

When we mention hippie destinations in India, only one place comes to mind – Kasol! Located along the Parvati River, Kasol is like a slice of Israel in India. In fact, you’ll see fluttering Hebrew banners all along the river. The picturesque town has become a hub for backpackers and hikers who’re hiking Yanker, Sar, and Parbati Passes or Kheerganga. This hippie haven has many cafes where you’ll see backpackers and fellow hippies chilling out. These include Buddha Place, Jim Morrison Cafe, Freedom Cafe on the river, and Shiva Shanti Cafe, which is yet another hippie favorite. What’s more, you’ll even see small groups of travelers everywhere. They’ll be smoking sheesha and listening to music, absorbed in the natural beauty of the place.

Diving, snorkeling, kayaking; there’s a lot to do in Cape Maclear, one of the best hippie destinations in Malawi. This hippie town sees backpackers come from far and near to chill on hammocks and talk about life over a few drinks. This bucolic haven lies on the banks of Lake Malawi, the second deepest and third-largest lake in Africa . This lovely little backwater has still stayed pretty rustic, despite its solid popularity with backpackers from around the world. However, it’s developed wonderfully over the years with more facilities and restaurants than earlier, thus with something for everyone. The best bit? This African oasis sits right in the heart of Lake Malawi National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Auroville, a.k.a. ‘The City of Dawn’ is a small town located on India’s Coromandel Coast and is one of the best hippie destinations in India. The idea behind this experimental township is a place of unity and where mankind can thrive. What’s more, the idea is for people to live peacefully without discrimination or borders and with spirituality. Auroville is one of the biggest melting pot cities in India, with hippies coming from far and wide and finding peace. The epicenter of this lush utopia is the golden-domed Matrimandir, which is surrounded by an area called a peace area. Silence is maintained within Matrimandir to help ensure the tranquility of space for whoever steps in there. It’s no wonder that Auroville is one of India’s most popular hippie destinations.

Topping the list of the world’s best hippie destinations is Ko Pha Ngan in Thailand. Sitting just above  Ko Samui  in the Gulf of Thailand, this small island is a classic stop on the eastern hippie trail. Sometime between 1983 and 1993, travelers began playing music on the pristine beaches during the full moon. As the years went by, this tradition is what is now known as the infamous Full Moon Parties! Think chemically-enhanced, day-glo, and hard-partying people in neon with buckets of beer. Today, Ko Pha Ngan is a hippie paradise and a beach retreat, with the epicenter at Hat Ri. This sunset-facing beach at the island’s southern tip is the nucleus of the international hippie scene that offers everything from spirituality and hedonism to tai chi and trance music.

A Florida Gen Xer who earned over $300,000 secretly working multiple remote jobs shares why he's 'far from rich'

  • A Florida-based Gen Xer made over $300,000 in 2023 secretly working multiple remote tech jobs.
  • While the extra income has allowed him to travel more, he still feels "far from rich," he said.
  • He shared how his higher income has impacted his relationships and how he's spending the money .

Insider Today

In 2021, Robert was making roughly $180,000 a year from his tech job , but when his workflow slowed, he feared a layoff may be coming soon.

He decided to start looking for another role and eventually found one that paid $190,000 a year, he previously told Business Insider via email. But before he resigned from his current job, he recalled hearing about a former coworker who was making several hundred thousand dollars secretly working two jobs.

After thinking it over, Robert decided to try to juggle both roles at the same time. That choice changed his life.

In 2023, Robert earned over $300,000 across multiple remote roles, according to documents viewed by BI. He said the extra income allowed his partner to quit their job and made it possible for him to take several expensive vacations, including a roughly $20,000 cruise.

The Gen Xer, a Florida resident, is among the " overemployed " Americans who are secretly working multiple remote jobs to boost their incomes. Over the past year, Business Insider has interviewed more than a dozen job jugglers, many of whom are in the IT and tech industries, who've used the extra money to pay off debt , save for retirement , and afford weight-loss drugs . While some employers may be fine with their workers having a second job, doing so without company approval could have repercussions if a worker is found out .

For Robert, the income from multiple jobs decision has made it possible for him to travel more. Over the last few years, he estimates he spent between $28,000 and $35,000 in total annual travel expenses. Some of his recent trips included Yellowstone, the Galápagos Islands , and Las Vegas.

"We now spend a lot more time on vacations," he said. "We spend a lot on travel because life is more about experiences and memories than material things."

Still, Robert considers himself to be "far from rich," in part because it takes more than a couple of years with a higher income to ensure financial security in the long term, he said. He experienced several job separations in the past, so he knows his jobs aren't guaranteed to last. Additionally, he said he made some bad decisions when he was younger that set back his finances.

"We don't live an extravagant life by any means," he said.

Robert shared how earning more has impacted his relationships with his partner and family — and how he's spending the money.

The extra income goes to travel, food, home, and family

Robert said making more money hasn't changed his relationship with his partner much. But it has been good for his relationships with his family, as it's made it possible for him to visit them more often.

He said it's also allowed him to provide some family members with financial support — he estimated that he spends about $5,000 to $6,000 a year helping out relatives. But finding the right balance can be tricky.

"I am careful with that because I know financial help to some actually is a disservice and prevents people from pushing themselves to succeed," he said.

Aside from family and travel, Robert said he spends most of his money on food and his home.

Food is something he doesn't typically budget for, but these expenses can add up, particularly when he travels, he said. On a five-day trip earlier this year, he said he spent about $700 on food, including $225 on one meal for himself and two family members. He estimated that in the typical month, he spends between $1,500 to $2,000 on food.

"We eat well," he said. "I grew up poor with little to no good food and that is something I do not skimp on."

Robert's housing expenses include a monthly mortgage payment — he said he has about $380,000 left on his loan balance.

He's also putting over $100,000 into refurbishing his home, according to documents viewed by BI. He said this money is going toward a new deck with a high-end hot tub, his basement, and an over 1000-square-foot garage, which he said will be used for two vehicles, a gym, and storage. He said he's taken out loans to fund some of this spending.

Additionally, Robert said he's bought two vehicles in recent years, — both of which are mostly paid off — and that he tries to put as much money in his 401(k) account as he can.

However, Robert said he's not satisfied with the state of his finances.

"My partner and I would like to have no debts in five years unless we invest in a vacation home for us and the family," he said. "We would also like to have $250,000 saved up in six or seven years which is separate from our retirement accounts."
