Neighbours: The Celebration Tour review â the perfect blend of poignancy and Toadfish jokes
This stage show sees the actors behind Paul Robinson and Toadie argue over who had most marriages, before a genuinely touching thank you to fans â who leave the showâs stars in tears
N eighbours being cancelled, Kylie and Jason Donovan reprising their roles and the soap creating international headlines for its celebratory finale ⊠before being revived by a streaming service just over three months later is, no question, peak Neighbours .
The same can also be said for the tour. A one-off Live in Conversation special had been planned, featuring cast members talking about and sharing their favourite moments, to mark the Australian soapâs 35th anniversary in 2020. Those plans were then shelved because of Covid. Then last year, when the show was cancelled after Channel 5 decided to not renew its contract, Neighbours announced The Farewell Tour. Now, with the soap being picked up by Amazonâs Freevee streaming service , it has changed its name once again to Neighbours: The Celebration Tour.
The excitement in the room beforehand was palpable, the gift shop thronged with fans buying plastic Ramsay Street replica signs. The show itself, mostly consisting of a Q&A, leaned heavily into discussing the more surreal elements of the daytime soap that made it such a firm favourite. âLife on Neighbours for Toadie was about being involved in a bouncy castle accident, being run over, shot âŠâ said the host, Leah Boleto, to the actor who portrayed him, Ryan Moloney, as a montage of those accidents played silently on a screen behind them.
âWhat?! It could happen!â declared Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy) when questioned about a storyline that involved her slipping on milk, banging her head and thinking she was a teenager. She recounted the time her character had to perform an emergency tracheostomy on Lou after he started choking in the aftermath of a tornado, aided only by a butter knife, a straw and instructions down the phone from her on-screen partner, Dr Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher). In case you are wondering, Lou made a full recovery. âAll in a dayâs work,â said Fletcher.
The audience cheered when shown a clip of Susan slapping Karl after he had admitted to an affair. April Rose Pengilly (Chloe Brennan) talked about how many Simpsons references she managed to slip into her dialogue. And Annie Jones (Plain Jane Superbrain) was introduced with a clip from a storyline where her son had revealed that he was an escort, followed by a portrait of Mrs Mangal falling off the wall and crashing to the ground.
This surrealism continued into the second half. It began with a montage of Neighbours explosions from over the years. Now with the cast sitting together, rather than being interviewed separately, there were lighthearted discussions on topics such as who had the most weddings, with Toadieâs seven (one notably ending with him accidentally driving off a cliff into the sea) beaten by Paul Robinsonâs nine; the character, played by Stefan Dennis, has had six wives. It would have been nice if the cast had all sat together from the start of the show.
after newsletter promotion
The event was strongest when the cast spoke frankly about the shock of the soapâs cancellation, the pain they felt saying goodbye to the crew (some of whom left weeks before the final episode even aired), followed by their surprise that it had been saved . Neighbours was reincarnated by Amazon, but that was very much due to the fans, many of whom had been campaigning online for months and many of whom must have been in that audience. While the soap was often silly and surreal, it also contained a natural warmth and inclusiveness that many shows lack. The cast relished the opportunity to thank fans for their support, with several revealing that they had cried during the meet and greets that had taken place that day. It felt like a rare and genuine opportunity to say thank you.
It also ended with a rather touching moment. Directly before goading the entire audience into singing the soapâs theme tune, the cast got up from their seats and stood in a row at the front. Woodburne then reprised Susanâs narration from the soapâs final scene shown last July, when her character walked around Erinsborough making observations on her fellow neighbours. Only this time she shared the lines with her co-stars and added in several extra words. âTogether we are ⊠and we will continue to be ⊠the perfect blend,â she said.
Neighbours: The Celebration Tour is at venues across the UK until 23 March, with a performance in Australia on 16 April

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Neighbours announces nationwide 40th anniversary cast tour
Share this with
Cult soap opera Neighbours has announced that a number of their cast members will be once again flying from Melbourne to the UK for a nationwide tour in 2025.
The Ramsay Street residents were last in our country last year, prior to commencement of filming of the new series of Neighbours on Amazon Freevee, where they embarked on a sell-out fifteen date Celebration Tour.
Itâs been a troubling time for the show in recent years, having been cancelled by broadcaster Channel 5 in 2022 â but this wasnât the first time it was taken off the air.
Originally broadcast on the Seven Network, the show didnât rate well outside of Melbourne where it is produced, and after eight months the final episode aired.
However, rival Channel 10 saw potential in the programme and picked it up for a new run two months later.

The hugely successful revival saw additional sets added, new families and some now very familiar faces â Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce  â joining the cast.
It also became Australiaâs biggest media export, first arriving on BBC One in the UK in a shakeup to their daytime lineup in autumn 1986, before moving to Channel 5 in 2008.Â
In a soap twist nobody saw coming, streaming giants Amazon picked Neighbours up  and new episodes have aired daily on their ad-supported service Freevee since last September.Â
Last month, the serial reached a huge landmark of 9,000 episodes , and was celebrated with a number of nods to the past.
The upcoming tour will be hosted by Sky News anchor and self professed superfan Leah Boleto, who also appeared on last yearâs road trip.
Cast will make appearances in 6 venues across the UK including the world-famous London Palladium, which first welcomed the show to perform as part of the Royal Variety Performance in 1988.

- Monday 3rd February 2025: Symphony Hall, Birmingham

Organisers have teased a new star line-up, never before-heard stories and surprises plus all the inside scoop on what life is really like in Erinsborough.
Last year, Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy), Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy), Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson), Ryan Maloney (Toadfish Rebecchi), Annie Jones (Jane Harris) and April-Rose Pengilly (Chloe Brennan) took to the stage, but next yearâs names have yet to be announced.
The news comes just weeks after Ryan announced his own solo tour .
In an exclusive interview with Metro.co.uk, he told us:
âI think itâs going to be a little bit different,â
âI want it to be a sort of cross between television aspects and theatre at the same time and just bring to the forefront that Iâm a performer and Iâve been doing it since I was eight years old on stage, doing musicals and comic theatre and performing and hosting â all that kind of jazz
âI think itâs time to let people in and show them something a bit different, [so they can] see what Ryanâs really like.â
Tickets will go on general sale on 10th April at 10am with a pre-sale on 8th April also at 10am.

Waterfront Hall
The waterfront hall is an iconic venue and has been instrumental in bringing the worldâs stars to belfast..
Waterfront Hall has been a beacon of peace within Belfast. First opening its doors in 1997, it came at a turning point in the history of the city and has since gone on to host some of the most iconic names to visit Belfast. Designed by local architects Robinson McIlwaine and built by contractors Gilbert Ash, the Waterfront Hall was introduced to the people of Belfast in an opening concert on 17 January 1997, where guests were treated to a breath-taking performance by Ulster Orchestra in collaboration with world-renowned flautist, Sir James Galway, and internationally-acclaimed pianist, Barry Douglas. Since its inaugural concert, Waterfront Hall was making headlines again when it hosted U2 for the infamous âYesâ concert; a free concert for the youth of Belfast which was envisioned as a last hope to get the âyesâ vote over the line in the historic referendum that took place just three days later. The people of Belfast took the world by surprise when 71% of the voters opted for peace, overwhelmingly endorsing the Good Friday Agreement which was instrumental in bringing peace to Northern Ireland.
First came peace, then came prosperity
As Belfast rebuilt itself moving into the 21st Century, the economy grew and the nightlife economy was rejuvenated. Waterfront Hall was fundamental in the development of the city of Belfast hosting some of the biggest names in live entertainment; Van Morrison, Blondie, Neil Diamond, One Direction and Snow Patrol have all graced the stage of Waterfront Hall and brought their energy to the city of the Belfast.
In 2016, the portfolio grew and a ÂŁ29.5M extension was granted to establish Northern Irelandâs largest convention centre, ICC Belfast . The status of Belfast was growing in Europe and it was fast-becoming the vibrant city we have before us today.
The future is rich for Belfast, and itâs our role as a city to show every visitor and artist our energy and passion for live entertainmentâŠand that starts at the Waterfront Hall !

By boat [ edit ].
During summer there are boats from Kazan , Samara and other destinations on the Volga River.
By train [ edit ]
The train takes you here from Moscow (from Kazanskaya train station) in approximately 16 hours or from Volgograd in about 20 hours. Ulyanovsk Main Station is located 6 km from the city center.
Get around [ edit ]
Ulyanovsk has an extensive public transportation network that includes buses, trolleys, and trams. It is very affordable, but congested and may be quite confusing. You won't find any route maps or schedules, neither at bus stops nor in buses. Fee collectors usually don't speak English. Express buses and semi-private van routes are more comfortable and more expensive. Taxis are not expensive, and that's your best bet if you want to get somewhere (relatively) quickly, in (relative) comfort (almost all cars are old Russian ladas or over 10 year old non-Russian cars), and without much hassle. They are also most likely to have English speaking drivers (one in 1000) and superloud Russian pop music.
Getting between the banks of the Volga is a problem. There is a two lane bridge connecting the banks and it's nearly always congested, so if you're unlucky, it can take a couple of hours. Most locals avoid going over the bridge if they can. A four-lane bridge was planned to relieve these problems.
See [ edit ]
As the home town of Lenin, it's worth visiting the Lenin Memorial Centre and Gardens and museums based in his former houses. There is also a museum dedicated to the poet 'Goncharov' and the war memorial at the end of the main street 'Ulitsa Goncharova' offers breathtaking views over the Volga.
Do [ edit ]
In winter, try cross-country skiing along the Sviaga river, in summer take a boat ride over the reservoir.
Buy [ edit ]
The city's main shopping centre 'Tsum' is basic to say the least but does offer some basic shopping.

History of Ulyanovsk
Ulyanovsk in the 17th-19th centuries.
In 1648, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the fortress of Sinbirsk was founded on the right bank of the Volga River in order to protect the eastern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from the raids of nomadic tribes (Nogai Tatars), as well as to colonize the Volga region.
In the fall of 1670, Sinbirsk was unsuccessfully besieged by the army of Stepan Razin - the Don Cossack, who was the leader of the 1670-1671 uprising, the largest in the history of pre-Petrine Russia. In 1678, 1,579 people lived in Sinbirsk.
In 1729, the coat of arms of Sinbirsk was approved - a white pillar topped with a golden crown in the azure field. In 1780, Sinbirsk was renamed Simbirsk. In 1793, 13,317 people lived in this town.
In 1812, Ivan Goncharov, a famous Russian novelist and critic, was born in Simbirsk. In 1836, Emperor Nicholas I visited Simbirsk and made a lot of orders for the construction of new buildings in the town, especially in its central part. In 1840, the Simbirsk Theological Seminary was opened.
More Historical Facts…
In 1845, a monument to Nikolay Karamzin (1766-1826) was opened - the author of one of the first generalizing works on the history of Russia and a reformer of the Russian literary language, who was born near Simbirsk. Today, this monument erected in Karamzin Public Garden is one of the symbols of Ulyanovsk. In 1848, one of the first libraries in the Volga region was opened in this town - the Karamzin Public Library.
In the summer of 1864, a terrible fire occurred in Simbirsk, which lasted 9 days. Only one fourth of the town buildings survived. In 1867, the merchant Yurgens opened the first bookstore in Simbirsk. In 1870, the future “leader of the world revolution” Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk. Alexander Kerensky, a prominent Russian politician and statesman, was born here in 1881. According to the 1897 census, 43.3 thousand people lived in Simbirsk.
Ulyanovsk in the first half of the 20th century
From 1908 to 1912, Igor Kurchatov, the future creator of the Soviet atomic bomb, lived in Simbirsk with his parents and studied at the local gymnasium. In 1916, the construction of the Imperial Bridge over the Volga River was completed in Simbirsk. With a length of 2,089 meters, it was the longest bridge in the Russian Empire at that time.
After the First World War and the Russian Civil War, the city’s industry was in ruin. During the war years, not a single building was constructed in Simbirsk, street lighting disappeared, boulevards and parks fell into disrepair, up to a hundred residential buildings were destroyed.
On May 9, 1924, in connection with the death of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk, and Simbirsk Governorate - into Ulyanovsk Governorate. Other proposed options for the new name of the city were such as “Lenin”, “Leninsk”, “Ilyich”.
By the end of the 1930s, almost all churches in Ulyanovsk were destroyed or used for other purposes. On the eve of the Second World War, Ulyanovsk was a provincial city with a population of about 110 thousand people. There were no large industrial enterprises, with the exception of the 3rd State Plant named after Volodarsky (Ulyanovsk Cartridge Plant) - one of the oldest defense enterprises in Russia, specializing in the production of cartridges for rifled weapons.
During the Second World War, Ulyanovsk became the place of evacuation of 17 industrial enterprises from the occupied regions and the front line. The Minsk Tank School, renamed the 2nd Ulyanovsk Tank School, was relocated from Minsk, the Mogilev Military Infantry School, which became the Ulyanovsk Military Infantry School, was relocated from Mogilev. In 1942, a medical institute evacuated from Voronezh began to work in Ulyanovsk.
From October 1941 to August 1943, the Moscow Patriarchate was in evacuation in Ulyanovsk, headed by Metropolitan Sergius. From 1942 to 1945, Andrei Sakharov, the future creator of the hydrogen bomb, academician and human rights activist worked at the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant.
On January 19, 1943, Ulyanovsk became the center of the newly formed Ulyanovsk Oblast. From the second half of 1941 to the beginning of 1942, the population of Ulyanovsk, due to the evacuees, doubled and amounted to more than 200 thousand people. By 1945, as a result of re-evacuation, it decreased by 50 thousand and amounted to 152 thousand people.
Ulyanovsk after the Second World War
In the post-war period, Ulyanovsk became an industrial city. In 1953, during the construction of the Volga cascade of hydroelectric power plants, part of Ulyanovsk was included in the flooding zone of the Kuibyshev reservoir. In 1957, the Ulyanovsk airport was built. Since the 1960s, thanks to the high rates of housing and industrial construction, Ulyanovsk began to grow rapidly both in area and in population. On May 5, 1967, the 300,000th resident of the city was born.
In the 1969-1970s, in honor of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin, the historical center of Ulyanovsk was built up with modern buildings: the hotel “Sovetskaya”, the House of Artists, the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, the hotel “Venets”, the new railway station Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the new river station, the central airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the central department store, the central bus station, the Palace of Pioneers, the park “Friendship of Peoples”, etc.
With the construction of the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, Ulyanovsk became one of the main tourist centers of the USSR, after Moscow and Leningrad. The city was not closed to foreigners, which distinguished it from many other industrial regional centers, but foreign tourists were not allowed to deviate from the route. On June 1, 1973, the 400,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. On April 16, 1982, the population of Ulyanovsk exceeded 500 thousand people.
On June 5, 1983, in Ulyanovsk, the river cruise ship “Alexander Suvorov” crashed into the railway bridge across the Volga (the Imperial Bridge). By mistake of the crew, the ship tried to pass under the non-navigable span of the bridge. As a result, more than 170 people died. The large number of casualties is explained by the fact that at the time of the collision, most of the passengers were in the movie theater and on the dance floor on the upper deck, which was completely destroyed by the collision with the bridge girder.
On July 17, 1987, the 600,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. The city’s tourist significance declined sharply after the collapse of the USSR. In 1998, Ulyanovsk celebrated its 350th anniversary.
In the 2000s, there was a discussion about the reverse renaming of the city to Simbirsk, but the residents of Ulyanovsk for the most part did not support this proposal. In 2009, the arches of the old railway bridge were replaced. On November 24, 2009, the Presidential Bridge across the Volga was opened, the second longest in Russia, with a length of about 6 kilometers.

Ulyanovsk - Features
From 1648 to 1780, the name of Ulyanovsk was Sinbirsk, and from 1780 to 1924 - Simbirsk. This name was given to the town by its founder, Bogdan Khitrovo, after the name of the settlement of Sinbir (named after the Bulgarian prince Sinbir), the remains of which were located nearby. In 1924, after the death of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk.
Ulyanovsk is located in a forest-steppe zone on the Volga Upland, on both banks of the Volga River (Kuybyshev Reservoir). The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in February is minus 10.4 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.2 degrees Celsius. A characteristic feature of Ulyanovsk is the constant winds blowing from the Volga.
This city is a major transport point, lying between central Russia and the Urals. Neighboring regional centers are three to five hours away by car. There are two international airports near the city - Ulyanovsk-Central (ULV) and Ulyanovsk-Vostochny (ULY).
The banks of the Volga in Ulyanovsk are connected by two bridges. The old railway bridge was officially opened in 1916 and was named “Imperial of His Majesty Nicholas II”. In 1917, it was renamed Freedom Bridge. In 2009, it again began to be called “Imperial Bridge”. The new bridge (also called “Presidential Bridge”) was commissioned on November 26, 2009.
Public transport is represented by trams, trolleybuses, buses, and minibuses. In Ulyanovsk tram lines are located exclusively in the right-bank part of the city and trolleybus lines are in the left-bank part. In the last years of the USSR, it was planned to build a subway in Ulyanovsk.
It is a multi-ethnic city. The ethnic composition according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census: Russians (77.65%), Tatars (12.64%), Chuvash (5.02%), Mordovians (1.4%). The economy of the city is based on the enterprises of the automotive industry, engine building, aircraft building, instrument making, machine building, and metalworking.
Ulyanovsk has a high potential for the development of the tourism industry. The tourist image of Ulyanovsk as “The Birthplace of Vladimir Lenin” is supplemented with some new ones now: “Russian provincial town of the 19th century”, “Homeland of Oblomov”, “Architectural Museum in the Open Air”.
The City Day of Ulyanovsk is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in September.

'Weâre your neighbors' | Community members celebrate the Big Nosh Fundraiser
T he Tree of Life Congregation , one of the oldest Jewish synagogues in Columbia, held its annual fundraiser, the Big Nosh, on Sunday. The yearly event brings the community together for food and culture.
âIt usually happens in May," Patty Tucker said. "Itâs our annual fundraiser; we provide all different kinds of Jewish food."
Tucker, the president of the Tree of Life Synagogue, said theyâve been holding the event for 20 years, providing options like matzah ball soup, brisket and more.
âI love the latkes, and we just love the food; itâs really good," Vanessa Mota said. "The brisket melts in your mouth."
âWe are a diverse group; already, we have an American, we have a Brazilian, and Iâm from South Africa, so weâre used to being in different cultures and trying different food,â Mark Geel said.
But itâs not all about food. The event also offers a chance to learn about new or different cultures. The Rabbi, Erik Uriarte, said many people who attend have different religious backgrounds.
âSo, the Jewish community has been part of Columbia for - our synagogue is 128 years old, and the Jewish community has been part of South Carolina since even before the United States began,â Uriarte said.
Community members also had the chance to tour the museum and sanctuary to learn about the Jewish faith.
âIt's always important to say that, 'Hey, we are part of the greater community; weâre your neighbors,' and we donât just want to be this building that people drive past,â he said.
The money raised at the fundraiser went toward funding the synagogueâs budget.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
Police in Georgia rounded up a half dozen squatters who were bedding down in a $450,000 suburban home for months â after tracing a neighbor’s stolen car to their driveway.
The six intruders, who moved into the empty house at 4300 Caveat Court on Christmas Day, had long become a nuisance in the neighborhood, local residents told WANF-TV News .
âThey buy these homes, and the people say they can afford them. They do the paperwork, and theyâre supposed to buy it back from the company,” said Mel Keyton, president of the Hampton Oaks Homeowners Association. “They never buy it back.
“They leave the house vacant, squatters move in,â Keyton said. “We don’t know who these people are and what they’re doing.”
Keyton said the squatters broke into another empty home in the neighborhood while the owners were out of town and stole their car.
Cops caught up with the crew on Saturday and placed them in handcuffs.
“Not knowing who’s living amongst us, it really makes you feel uneasy and you just don’t feel safe,” association vice president Kendra Snorton told Fox affiliate WAGA-TV . “You don’t feel safe.
“The ringleader, we see him walking his dog all the time,” Snorton said. “He’s very courteous and polite when he interacts with the community.”
Saturday’s arrests come in the wake of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signing the Georgia Squatter Reform Act on April 24, which gives homeowners more authority to boot unwanted squatters.
“Hopefully it won’t get this bad,” Keyton told WAGA of the squatter dilemma. “Hopefully we won’t have to use this amount of police.”
