Cairns is a major port city located on Trinity Bay, in northern Queensland, Australia. It is one of the coastal cities along the Great Barrier Reef . By annual cruise shipping traffic, Cairns is currently ranked Australia's 4th largest cruise port - after Sydney NSW , Brisbane QLD and Melbourne Victoria .

Cairns is the southern gateway to the sparsely inhabited Cape York Peninsula. Queensland's wet tropics and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, a couple of World Heritage Sites, are close to the city. Before 1879, when the city was established, the only inhabitants of this area were the Aborigines. The historic museum of Cairns reveals the traditions of this old Australian tribe. From Cairns, tourists can visit the Great Barrier Reef, take the rainforest train up to Kuranda, then return skimming over the trees below by Sky Train.

In 1770, the British navigator Captain James Cook (1728-1779) named Trinity Bay after the Trinity Sunday (first Sunday after Pentecost). The region where is now Cairns was settled by Europeans in 1876 as a port for Hodkinson River goldfield 60 ml (100 km) inland. The settlement was named after William Wellington Cairns (1828-1888), a British colonial administrator (governor of Queensland in the mid 1870s).

In 2016, for the first time ever, a large cruise ship (the  P&O Cruises Australia  vessel  Pacific Eden ) was homeported in Cairns. In 2017, the ship's 3-month long (August-November) turaround season included a total of 113 ships and 11 roundtrip departures. The estimated impact on the region's economy was AUD 6 million (USD 4,8 million).

In 2018, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 134 ship calls. For season 2018, the number of roundtrips was reduced to 7.

Cairns cruise terminal

Cairns is a major Queensland cruise port serving international (Australia and Asia based) cruise ships but also a huge fleet of Australian reef cruise vessels offering regularly scheduled departures each day. The cruise ship terminal is at a short walk distance from the downtown dining and shopping area.

The cruise port has max berthing capacity of 2 vessels at a time. Docking wharves are numbered 1 and 5, while the cruise terminal building is on wharf 2. Larger-sized cruise ships can't enter the port due to the Entrance Channel restrictions - avrg width of 90 m (295 ft), length of 10 km (6 ml), and max draft of 8,3 m (27 ft). Bigger ships anchor in open sea and their passengers are transported to the port's wharves via the ship's tender boats.

Cairns Airport serves both domestic and international flights. The airport is located approx 5 ml (8 km) from the city.

Larger cruise ships anchor in Trinity Bay, and their passengers are transported via the ship's tender boats. By year 2031, Port Cairns plans to finish the USD 127 million shipping channel expansion project (deepening and widening). After project's completion, the expanded waterway will allow port access to bigger-sized ships (with max LOA length 300 m / 985 ft), with expected ~150 cruise vessels annually.

The Port of Cairns is one of the country's busiest cruise destinations with major international cruise ships scheduled annually and its vast array of domestic reef vessels operating on a daily basis. The terminal, located in the heart of the City, is an easy walk to downtown shopping. This modern, sophisticated city with its extensive shopping and dining experiences, magnificent mountain backdrop and direct access to the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage Tropical Rainforests makes Cairns an extremely attractive cruise and fly/cruise port. The Port provides capacity for up to two cruise vessels located along Wharves 1-5 with a dedicated cruise terminal of Cairns on Wharf 2/3.

Some of the bigger ships cannot get in as the channel into the port is very long and narrow. They also have to be of a size that will let them turn around in the river, otherwise, they will be anchored and use tenders. Cairns International Airport is located just 8 kilometers from the City. Taxi: The average fare from the airport to the city is $16.50 by Black & White Taxis.

Sailing in to Cairns for a stopover, or embarking on a cruise from Cairns , means getting a real taste of tropical Queensland and the nearby Great Barrier Reef in Australia. This far-north city certainly gets a little steamy in the summertime, but it’s also a cosmopolitan place with plenty of options for things to see, do and experience. The strong tourism industry is testament to that — and the possibilities open up even further when you get out of the city into the amazing landscapes of North Queensland.

Ships from a range of cruise lines dock at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal, which is a walkable distance from downtown Cairns. From there, it’s easy to get around and explore the region. Other larger ships, such as some of the Princess Cruises fleet, may anchor instead at Yorkey’s Knob, a northern suburb, from where passengers can get a shuttle bus into the city.

Do you have a cruise to or from Cairns on your horizon? I've put together a quick list of great places to go that are easy to reach from the cruise pier and the city center. Whether you have all day or just a few hours, you can see a bit of this great city. (See Cruiseable's Guide to Cairns .)

The family-friendly lagoon at the Cairns Esplanade.

Walk the Esplanade

The Esplanade is a wonderful public area, often considered the heart and focal point of Cairns. If you are short on time or just want a low-key activity for your visit, this is the perfect way to go.

The Cairns Esplanade stretches for 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) along the waterfront and is far more than just a walking track. It features parklands, playgrounds for the little ones, BBQs, skate ramps, a bouldering (low rock climbing) park, fitness stations, a petanque court and more. There is a market every Saturday between 8 am and 4 pm and live music every weekend. However, possibly the biggest crowd pleaser is the Lagoon, a free swimming pool with lifeguards on duty year-round. Stingers, sharks and lack of nice beaches in the city make swimming in the ocean in Cairns an unlikely prospect, so this saltwater lagoon is the ideal solution.

A green parrot at the Cairns ZOOM and Wildlife Dome.

Cairns and Port Trips and Attractions

CaPTA, short for Cairns and Port Trips and Attractions , operates the top wildlife parks, tours and attractions in Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef region and the greater Tropical North Queensland area. Locally owned and operated, the group runs several wildlife and nature attractions and touring companies: Rainforestation Nature Park Kuranda, Wildlife Habitat, Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and Tropic Wings Cairns Tours & Charters.

From palm-dotted beaches to majestic waterfalls and primeval rainforests, you'll be sure to experience an unforgettable adventure.

A blossom at the Cairns Botanic Gardens.

Centenary Lakes & Botanic Gardens

It’s possible to get a taste of the rainforest without even leaving the city. Centenary Lakes and the Botanic Gardens are a long walk or short taxi ride from the cruise dock, in Cairns’ Edge Hill suburb.

The free facility includes a Rainforest Boardwalk, BBQ facilities, benches and the interesting flora of the Botanic Gardens. They are a lovely way to get off the ship, ground oneself and enjoy the unique Queensland foliage. Be warned, the lakes are a crocodile habitat!

A visitor and instructor skydive over Cairns.

Skydiving over Cairns

This one need to be booked in advance — but if you want a really good overview of Cairns, it’s definitely the way to go. Not for the fainthearted, of course!

Skydive Cairns is conveniently located on Grafton Street in the city center, so if you have a booking for your day in port you can walk there and will be shuttled to the plane you’ll jump from. (C'mon, you've always wanted to do this, so here's your chance.) The fall provides views over the Great Barrier Reef and the World Heritage Rainforest — if you can keep your eyes open!

At Kuranda Village, along the central business corridor in the heart of Cairns.

Shop till you drop

With the central business district just a stroll from the cruise dock, there’s plenty of opportunity for retail therapy should that appeal during your visit. Wander toward the downtown area and you’ll soon find yourself immersed in shops, restaurants, cafes and more.

The Cairns Central shopping center is bordered by Spence, McLeod, Bunda and Aplin streets and has more than 180 retail outlets to browse. Many people go looking in Cairns for pearls, which are a popular product of Northern Australia. You can find high-quality South Sea pearls here in various jewelry stores.

Great Barrier Reef Tours

Are you in town en route to the Great Barrier Reef? Either way, this activity is one of the best experiences Cairns has to offer. You can book a reef trip through your cruise line, and this is a safe option as you are guaranteed to be back in time. However, there are plenty of other operators in town who are used to working with cruise ship timetables. Many of these can be found in and around “The Pier” just north of the cruise dock.

A boat tour out to the reef might include viewing from the boat, snorkeling, diving and other options. You can find one that’s right for you, I'm sure. If you are on a cruise departing Cairns, you might like to get there ahead of time and embark on a multi-day Barrier Reef small boat cruise before boarding your big ship.

They have turtle talks and croc feeding shows throughout the day, too!

Port of Cairns

Cairns Seaport is a multi-purpose regional port that caters to a diverse range of customers from project, bulk and general cargo, cruise shipping, fishing fleet and reef passenger ferries.

The Port's bulk cargo includes petroleum products, sugar, fertiliser and liquid petroleum gas. The Port's project cargo contracts range from the Rio Tinto Amrun Bauxite Mine construction project to the Ratch Australia Corporation’s Mount Emerald Wind Farm project and the MSF Sugar Tableland Mill power station project.

The Port has long been the natural consolidation and redistribution centre for supplies shipped to the coastal communities north of Cairns as well as the Torres Strait Islands and the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The Port is one of Australia's busiest cruising destinations with both major international cruise ships and a number of domestic cruise vessels operating out of Cairns.

Cairns Port History

Ports North, formerly the Cairns Port Authority and Cairns Harbour Board, is arguably the most important organisation in the history of Cairns and the district.

Created in 1906, it has evolved to meet changing conditions and often led the way in the introduction of new technology and critical regional development.

In many respects the history of Ports North is the history of Cairns.   The town was established to provide a port for the hinterland mining industry, and the Cairns Harbour Board and the seaport remained at the core of the town's existence.

The main attraction for those on one of our Cairns cruises is the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders. During a cruise to Cairns, you can take shore excursions and tours to the Great Barrier Reef, which is the largest coral reef on the planet and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to a variety of sea creatures and is a popular place for snorkeling and scuba diving.

City of Cairns

Cairns itself shouldn’t be missed while you’re in port. It has a vibrant downtown area with shops, restaurants, and a scenic waterfront.  Cairns even has a man-made saltwater lagoon, which was built to ensure visitors don’t come into contact with the crocodiles that sometimes hang out around the beaches of Cairns. You can swim without worry in the saltwater lagoon.

Daintree Rainforest

When it comes to nature and beauty, the Great Barrier Reef isn’t the only natural attraction near Cairns to visit. The Daintree Rainforest makes for a memorable sight to see during Cairns cruises. This Australian rainforest is the country’s largest contiguous area of tropical rainforest.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

One of the most fun and scenic ways to visit the rainforests near Cairns is on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which is a 7.5-meter cableway that runs over the canopies of Barron Gorge National Park. You can choose from a variety of gondolas to ride in, including glass-bottom gondolas, so you don’t miss any of the beauty happening beneath your feet.

Tipping is not expected in Australia, and that includes restaurants and bars. It is appreciated, however, and how much to tip for quality service is up to the visitor. In general, you can expect to tip less than you would in the U.S. – think more along the lines of 10% to 12%.

As for what to pay and tip with, the official currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD$). Keep in mind that instead of $1 bills, Australia uses $1 coins, and also has $2 coins. Don’t misplace your loose change as it can add up quickly! Credit cards are also commonly taken in Cairns, with Visa and Mastercard being the most widely accepted.
