Cable Car Untersberg

Closed for revision from 2 to 30 April 2024.

The modern Untersbergbahn takes walkers and hikers quickly and comfortably up the legendary Salzburg mountain. Awaiting the visitor at the top is a magnificent view over the whole landscape.

The Untersberg is one of the most popular recreational spaces in Salzburg. The Untersbergbahn has been taking hikers, winter-sports enthusiasts and nature-lovers up the mountain and back to the valley since 1961. The difference in altitude between the bottom station in Grödig/St. Leonhard (456 m) and the top station Geiereck (1,776 m) is 1,320 m.

The ride in one of the two spacious cable cars takes only 8 ½ minutes. The ride itself offers a breathtaking view over the town of Salzburg, the Berchtesgaden region and the Rositten valley. On a clear day, even the Salzkammergut lakes and the Chiemsee are visible.

The bottom station in Grödig/St. Leonhard, about 10 km south of Salzburg, can easily be reached by bus (nos. 25 and 28) and trolley bus line 5. The funicular was built between 1958 and 1961 and has been regularly modernised. Each of the two cable cars holds 50 passengers.

The top station of the Untersbergbahn lies in high Alpine terrain, so appropriate clothing and footwear are absolutely necessary, and please proceed with caution. Current weather information is available under the telephone number +43 6246 72477. Ascent and descent are included in the Salzburg Card . The Salzburg Card must be active for the descent!

Price & Hours

  • Facilities 1.5
  • Atmosphere 4.0

Winter sports enthusiasts, hikers and those in search of a panoramic view will all appreciate the Untersbergbahn, a cable car that takes travelers up the Untersberg mountain range in just 8.5 minutes. At the top of the mountain, which sits more than 6,000 feet above sea level, visitors are rewarded with spectacular views of Salzburg, the Berchtesgaden region and the Rositten valley.

Originally opened in 1961 and renovated in 2018, the funicular features two cable cars that can each accommodate up to 50 passengers. When visitors disembark at the top, they'll find themselves in alpine terrain with a variety of hiking trails at their fingertips. Closed-toe footwear that provides traction is necessary, as is appropriately warm clothing – even summer may be chilly. To get back down, visitors can hop back on the Untersbergbahn.

Many recent visitors called this one of the best things to do in Salzburg. Reviewers also recommend you download the audio guide (accessible via a QR code at the entrance to the funicular) to learn more about the cable car and the scenery.

The cable car entrance is accessible via bus route Nos. 25 and 28 and trolley bus line No. 5. Operating hours vary, but are typically 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. They may be slightly longer or shorter depending on the season. Cable cars depart every half-hour. The last ascent is 30 minutes before closing. Operating hours are subject to change, including closures for planned modernizations. Salzburg Card holders ascend and descend for free. Otherwise, adults ages 18 and older pay 28 euros (about $29) for a round-trip pass. There are discounted rates for children, students and seniors. For more information, visit the Untersbergbahn website .

#1 Altstadt (Old Town)

Since this central district – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – contains some of the city's most popular attractions, such as  Mozarts Geburtshaus  and the  Salzburg Museum , you will undoubtedly spend hours exploring here. Fellow travelers recommend not rushing through it, however, since there are tons of architectural marvels, markets and shops to see.

Wander around Altstadt's Judengasse (the Jewish District) and examine the St. Florian Fountain in the Alter Markt, a marketplace that dates back to the 13th century. And for architecture buffs, spend plenty of time gazing at the neighborhood's array of buildings. Some structures were originally constructed during the Middle Ages, while others are more contemporary and show Alstadt's progression over time.

  • opal98 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Captivating Experience A must do if you are in Salzburg. We had the Salzburg card. Cable car and bus rides alone pays off the SB card cost. Bus 25 and 5 both go to the Untersberg. Bus 25 takes scenic route and also stops at Hellbrunn palace and the zoo. The cable car ride was smooth and thrilling. It offers stunning views. It was a beautiful clear day, windy at the top. At the top incredible views in all directions. The small hike takes you to further up for more far reaching views. There are informative plaques. There are more trails to explore the mountain. Get the Salzburg card and enjoy this beautiful attraction and more. Read more Written October 25, 2023

  • Marty B 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A Few Tips About Untersberg Taking bus #25 by the Salzburg train station, we overheard a woman talking about a cable car and a mountain. Our intentions were to go the Palace of Hellbrunn. We missed the Hellbrunn stop and decided to take the bus further for the cable car which is the last stop for bus #25. There is an actual center where you can buy a ticket or show your Salzburg card. A cable car takes you up the 6473-foot (1973 meters) mountain of Untersberg. It is the highest peak in the region. The cable car was first constructed back in 1961. The mountain was actually seen in the move, The Sound of Music. The 28 Euro ride is nearly fully paid for by the 30 Euro daily Salzburg Card—which includes the bus ride. 50 people—and there is a number counter—is squeezed in the cable car. My wife was, unfortunately, stepped on and developed a severe contusion on a right foot. Our memories of this mountain are mixed. On a nice day, the views are majestic. One can actually see the castle in Salzburg. We did notice there are a number of trails. From the constructed center, the trail goes up for more views. We did not make it that far due to the event that happen to my wife. Luckily, the ride down was less dramatic as there was less than 10 people in the car. If you found this review to be “helpful” in any way, please click “Thumbs-up” to let me know. Read more Written July 17, 2023
  • My L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful Free with the Salzburg card to take the 8.5 minute cable car to the top of Untersberg. There’s a cable car every 30 minutes and free WiFi. Breath taking views of the alps. It was cold and with fresh powdery snow. Make sure you wear appropriate shoes with tracking if you plan to go further out in the snow. Takes another 30 minutes to hike to the peak which is the highest peak in Austria. Going down was more dangerous than going up. Read more Written April 27, 2023

We were lucky to go on a clear sunny day, in an otherwise rainy week, and the views were stunning. The cable car is speedy, if a little crowded and runs every 10 minutes or so and the little cafe at the top serves food and the obligatory hot chocolate! We used the Saltzburg card which made it excellent value. Read more Written January 8, 2023
  • adrianwoolley123 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The Gem In The Crown Of Salzburg An absolute gem of a trip. Caught the No 25 bus (3 euros each) from the bus station to the foot of Untersberg (very last stop) for some nice views. Cable car return a little steep at €28 each but wow the views when you get to the top are amazing. I would advise avoiding the grumpy staff in the restaurant at the top as the food was poor and over priced. We can accept the overpriced if it’s decent but not both! If you fancy it and are able aim for the cross on top of the highest accessible peak, it’s a little bit of a yomp but well worth the views and tranquility. Read more Written December 29, 2022
  • denisecY523UK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Walking on Untersberg Denise & Rich from silverglobetrotters.com took the cable car up to the top of Untersberg. The ascent started off quite sedately moving steadily enabling us enjoy the views! As we approached the first pylon, we were all tricked into thinking that we were nearing the summit, the car came so close to the ragged rock that it felt as if we could touch it but suddenly without warning the mountain fell away beneath us and there was a gasp from everyone on board as we took in the amazing views of the abyss below, a very dramatic moment! This was only the halfway point. Stepping out of the top station onto the mountain was breath taking! We found ourselves standing on a snowy mountain with no barriers, no fences, just us and common sense between the summit and the very long drop to the bottom, it took us a few minutes to assimilate to the surroundings and the sheer expanse of it! The valleys below were green and fertile, the surrounding mountains all with snowy caps whilst Untersberg was wrapped in a blanket of snow with spikes of pine poking through, it was as if we had stepped into a Christmas card. There was a viewing platform near the café for those less adventurous, but we set out to explore the trails taking us up to the cross at the top. We were glad that we had worn boots as the snow was quite deep in places which made climbing higher up difficult but perfectly possible. We were making good progress when the wind suddenly whipped up causing blizzard like conditions from the fallen snow, it only lasted about 20 minutes or so, but it was quite spectacular! Pulling our hats firmly around our ears against the icy wind we were in awe of the stunning views of the Salzburg Basin, the Watzmann which is the third highest mountain in Germany just south of the village of Berchtesgaden, the Salzkammergut to the east, a region of lakes and Alpine ranges and the Hohe Tauern mountains to the south. After the exhilaration of walking on the snowy mountain and soaking up the spell binding views before us that would surely never fade, we rewarded our efforts with a welcome mug of hot chocolate in the café before we made our descent! Top Tips: Check the weather, bright clear days in the town do not necessarily mean it will be clear on the mountain. Wear appropriate clothing for the time of year, the top station lies in high Alpine terrain. Untersbergbahn (cable car station) can be reached by No 25 or No 28 bus from Salzburg, it takes about 30 minutes. The No 25 also stops at Hellbrunn Palace which can visited on the return journey. • Curtis S 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles way the hell up there Untersberg is a mountain, accessible by cable car, from which the views are expansive and you can hike your hearts content…assuming the mountaintop isn’t fogged in. We primarily visited this place in the hopes of seeing one of its meadows, that was used for the opening sequence in the movie “The Sound Of Music.” A very steep cable car ride takes you to the top and the day we went, it was pretty much socked in by fog. There was a significant temperature difference, and there was snow on the ground at the top. There are many trails that can take you as far away as Berchtesgarden, if you wanna hike for several hours. The fog did finally break a little and we were afforded a lovely view of Salzburg in the distance. If you’re afraid of heights this might not be good for you. Free parking. If you really want to the top of Salzberg without tourists rushing all over, this is where you should be. I planned it as a surprise for my wife and she indeed loved it. Low rush, perfect for small hiking, easy and approachable. This is too good to be true. Although were were not in full hiking gear, we still reached to a good point where multiple mountain ranges are visible. It was just spectacular! We ate some muffins on the top as it was so peaceful to not be in a overcrowded tourist place. The routes which are discussed in other comments were really helpful and regardless to say, do buy a Salzberg card prior. Read more Written October 8, 2022

Ride the cable car to the summit of the Untersberg

Soar 1,320 m in only 8½ minutes.

cable car tour salzburg

  • Sie befinden sich hier:
  • The Untersberg
  • Untersberg Cable Car

If you want to reach the summit of the highest mountain around Salzburg but prefer to avoid the strenuous hike, then enjoy a comfortable ride to the top on the Untersberg cable car. In operation since 1961, the cable car connects the base station in Grödig / St. Leonhard (456 m above sea level) and the summit station of Geiereck (1,776 m) rising 1,320 m in altitude.

The history of the Untersbergbahn cable car

Already in the 19 th Century, ambitious plans were developed to connect the Untersberg mountain with the city of Salzburg. Although it is unimaginable today, the initial plans called for installing a cable car connecting the former harbor area along the current Rudolfskai street with the summit of the Untersberg. Those plans were ultimately abandoned, however the technical expertise that it took to construct the existing cable car system at the end of the 1950’s is no less impressive. The first stage of construction required installing three supporting cable car lines at the base station in Grödig/St. Leonhard. Even today, nearly 60 years later, looking up at the summit from the base of the mountain shows just how challenging this project was for the engineers and workers. The sites where the support towers now stand could only be reached and marked out by experienced climbers using ropes. Despite all the technical challenges, the first complete test run of the cable car to the summit took place on February 18, 1961. Two months later, on April 27, the first passengers were ferried to the top. Nowadays, it is hard to imagine the Untersberg without its cable car, especially since about 100,000 skiers and hikers use the cable car year-round for a relaxing ride to the summit.  Expect some goosebumps along the way though, because the enclosed gondola ascends directly alongside the rocky precipices on the ride to the summit.

The Untersberg - a summer and winter paradise

During the  winter Salzburgers use the Untersberg as their local ski resort. They ride the cable car leisurely to the top and, weather permitting, ski or snowboard down the 7.5 km slope in 15 minutes to the valley station in Fürstenbrunn. From there it is just a short bus ride back to the cable car station and another run.

Riding the cable car to the summit is equally exciting in the summer . The view on the ride up is itself something you will long remember. The view from atop stretches from the city of Salzburg far below to the Berchtesgadener Land region. When things are especially clear, you can see all the way to the Salzkammergut Lake District and to Lake Chiemsee. Not to be overlooked is the surrounding alpine world with the snow-covered peaks of the Dachstein and Hohe Tauern range. Enjoy the view from atop the summit while hiking along the windy ridge or while leisurely relaxing in a lounge chair.

Important Information : The summit station of the Untersberg cable car is located 1,776 m above sea level and is therefore a part of the high alpine zone.  As such, visitors must wear solid shoes and appropriate clothing.
