France-based Lagardère Travel Retail has acquired the franchise rights for Costa Coffee’s 145 stores across Poland and Latvia, pending regulatory approval.

Lagardère Travel Retail currently operates 60 Costa Coffee cafés and 60 Costa Express vending machines in the Czech Republic via a franchise partnership formed in 2008.

“The integration of Costa Coffee's operations in Poland and Latvia is another significant event in our relations with the brand, after projects implemented jointly in other markets,” said Maciej Gajkowski, Managing Director of the foodservice segment at Lagardère Travel Retail.

Gajkowski added that the company’s “operational excellence” and “long presence in Poland” were key factors in extending the franchise partnership.

World Coffee Portal data shows that while Poland’s branded coffee shop market contracted 2.2% by outlets due to pandemic disruption, the market is anticipated to grow 1.7% in 2021 and exceed 1,000 outlets within the next five years, with Costa Coffee the third-largest chain in the country.

Lagardère Travel Retail’s Poland-based foodservice segment also includes 53 So! Coffee cafés, which is the company’s own brand.

Meanwhile, the far smaller Latvian branded coffee shop market is anticipated to exceed 85 stores by 2024, with Costa Coffee currently holding just over one fifth of the market.

Despite disruption caused by the pandemic, the Eastern European branded coffee shop market has broadly continued to expand. In 2020, the Romanian market achieved 29.8% growth, while in Russia the market grew by 16.5%, to overtake France as Europe’s third largest, with around 4,000 outlets.

Founded in Paris in 1852, Lagardère Travel Retail is one of two divisions of parent company Lagardère group. Lagardère Travel Retail operates more than 4,850 stores across travel essentials, duty free and fashion and foodservice. The company has locations in 260 airports and 730 railway stations across 39 countries worldwide, employing 20,000 staff.

Lagardère Travel Retail to take over Costa Coffee chain in Poland

Costa Coffee

Lagardère Travel Retail will take over the operations of 145 Costa Coffee cafes in Poland and Latvia. The companies have already signed the relevant agreement, the UK-based Costa Coffee chain reports. This is the next step in the Coca Cola-owned Costa brand’s collaboration with Lagardère Travel Retail in Europe.

Although the two companies have been working together on the European market for many years, the signed contract will allow Lagardère Travel Retail to manage the Costa Coffee chain in Poland for the first time. The companies’ previous collaboration, which began in 2008 and continues to this day, has involved the operation of 60 Costa Express cafes and 60 Costa Express vending machines in the Czech Republic. However, before Lagardère Travel Retail can expand into Costa Coffee outlets in Poland it must await final approval from the relevant anti-monopoly authorities.

According to Gordon Mowat, managing director of Costa Coffee EMENA, the next phase of the partnership will allow the Costa Coffee brand to grow and introduce innovation. As he stresses, the chain’s employees are the heart of the business, so the company will make every effort to ensure the acquisition of the coffee shops goes smoothly. As Maciej Gajkowski, managing director of the Foodservice segment at Lagardère Travel Retail, adds, the company was chosen by Costa Coffee for its operational excellence and long presence in Poland. The collaboration will allow the company to double the size of its Foodservice business and make Lagardère Travel Retail a privileged partner for B2B relationships. In addition to the Polish market, the company will also develop the Travel Retail sector in Latvia.

Lagardère Travel Retail launches new commercial area at Warsaw Modlin Airport

POLAND. Lagardère Travel Retail has opened a shopping and food service area at Warsaw Modlin Airport, with the company’s portfolio now including an Aelia Duty Free store, a Relay shop, a 1 Minute Smacznego! store and two redesigned So Coffee cafes.

The retailer’s flagship Aelia Duty Free shop now covers a surface of about 400sq m, the Polish airport company said in a statement.

“The news and gifts Relay one-stop-shop also has been made bigger so that it may cater to the needs of more travellers at a time,” the company said.

Lagardère Travel Retail opened the two So Coffee cafes in winter 2022. Their new design is dominated by shades of green and features natural materials.

Lagardère Travel Retail Poland CEO Travel Essentials Dariusz Sienkiewicz told The Moodie Davitt Report that the company has cooperated with Warsaw-Modlin since 2017.

lagardere travel retail poland

Sienkiewicz said: “Last February, after the opening of the overhauled part of the airport, we had the pleasure to launch three new outlets from our portfolio. Our new foodvenience format, 1Minute Smacznego!, has been made available to passengers along with a So Coffee cafe with a total surface of more than 390sq m and another So Coffee cafe in the non-Schengen zone of the airport, fitted with a surface of almost 34sq m.

“At the ground floor of the terminal, in the restricted area behind the security check, we carried out an almost twofold expansion of our Aelia Duty Free store. We also expanded our Relay store with a news and gifts offer.”

The company’s food service outlets and stores are located on the terminal’s ground floor and at a mezzanine level. In addition to this, Lagardère Travel Retail also operates the Best Fly Bar.

Airport Commercial & Marketing Director Marek Rymkiewicz told The Moodie Davitt Report last year that as part of the project Warsaw Modlin Airport made a decision to adapt the terminal’s mezzanine level which was previously not accessible to its passengers.

The latest expansion marks another investment aimed at increasing Warsaw Modlin’s commercial capacity and allure. In 2016, the airport unveiled plans to raise its commercial zone by about +50%, or by about 500sq m as part of a PLN30 million (€6.7 million) upgrading project.

Set up in 2012 with the aim to complement Warsaw Chopin Airport as a hub for low-cost airlines such as Ryanair which uses the airport, Warsaw Modlin is located some 36 km north-west of the centre of Poland’s capital Warsaw.

The airport is jointly owned by a number of public entities. The authorities of the central Mazovia region hold the largest (37.2%) stake in the business, followed by the country’s Military Property Agency with 31.05%, the state-run Polish Airports State Enterprise (PPL) with 27.41%, and the municipality of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki (4.34%).

Lagardère Travel Retail’s assets in the Polish market include about 900 outlets operated under some 40 brands across travel essentials, duty free and fashion, and foodservice. ✈

DVG De Vecchi

It is also testament to Costa Coffee’s confidence in Lagardère Travel Retail’s operational excellence and ability to further strengthen Costa Coffee as the most important branded coffee brand in Poland. Their collaboration started in the Czech Republic in 2008 where Lagardère Travel Retail operates 60 Costa Coffee stores and 60 Costa Express machines, across multiple channels.

This long-term partnership illustrates both parties’ ambition to grow the brand in Poland rapidly, tapping into the expertise of a local partner who shares the brand’s vision for growth, their values and has a proven track record at operating retails stores, opening new stores and creating jobs. This agreement complements Lagardère Travel Retail existing position in the coffee shops segment in Poland (currently operated under the proprietary brand So! Commenting on the announcement, Gordon Mowat, Managing Director of Costa Coffee EMENA, said: “To help support our ambitious growth plans in Poland, we were looking for a partner who shares our vision and values, as well as a commitment to putting team members and consumers at the heart of every decision. By adding Costa Coffee’s network of stores, Lagardère Travel Retail doubles the size of its Foodservice operations in Poland and marks the beginning of its operations in Latvia. This also confirms the group’s strategic ambition to further expand its Foodservice leadership position in Europe, which materialized, at the end of 2022, by the acquisition of Marché International, a leading global catering company.

Also commenting on the announcement, Mélanie Guilldou, EVP Foodservice & CSR, Lagardère Travel Retail, said: “This acquisition is a great materialization of the very strong partnership we maintain with Costa Coffee and their parent company, Coca-Cola. Our strengths are complementary and we are both sharing the ambition to be leaders in the coffee segment, which experiences strong growth in Travel Retail.

We are very much looking forward to building on our very successful partnership in Europe to seek new growth opportunities further ahead, in North America and in Asia. Lagardère Travel Retail is strategically committed to developing its Foodservice expertise and network and the two strategic acquisitions we have closed over the past few months – Costa Coffee and Marché International – are testament to this”.
