And then the rains started. May marks the onset of Thailand's primary monsoon season, and by the end of April you'll be counting the hours till May 1. Pretty much the entire country sees a significant rise in rainfall — some areas more than others — and you can expect most every province to have at least some rain every other day. This isn't good news if you've just arrived, but it makes for a very welcome relief for anyone who was in Thailand in April!

May is a wildcard. In some years it feels like an extension of hot season while in others it truly marks the beginning of rainy season. The haze lifts over Northern destinations like Chiang Mai and Lampang , where a few good storms render the mountains a lush shade of green. It’s a great time to watch rice farmers sewing their fields in Northeastern points like Ubon Ratchathani and Nakhon Phanom . This is also when Yasothon holds its wild Bang Fai (Rocket) Festival. Fruit season is in full swing in eastern Gulf provinces like Rayong and Chanthaburi , which holds a durian-eating contest as part of its annual fruit festival.

The lower Gulf islands of Ko Samui , Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao see significantly less rain than other parts of the country in May. The Andaman Sea islands and eastern Gulf islands shift into low season, with some resorts on smaller islands like Ko Bulon Lae and Ko Wai closing up completely. In these regions, the seas begin to get rough and many public ferries cease operating until November.

May sees the first of a series of falls in temperature from the April peak. It will still be very warm across the country, and, when combined with the rain, the humidity can be excruciating, but the rains do provide relief all too frequently. Expect to see some flooding in urban centres like Bangkok in the first weeks of the rainy season as drains, all clogged up with dry season debris will block.

Ko Chang in May is wet. Not as wet as it will get in the coming months, but certainly wetter than just about any other island in Thailand — if you really want some island time but don't want to head south, Ko Samet is a better bet. Back on Ko Chang, expect at least some drizzle most days. On the upside the crowds from April will start to drop off.

The rains start midway through May in Chiang Mai and it quickly ramps up to rain every other day. As elsewhere this provides welcome respite from the heat of April, but an added bonus is that it starts to clear the air, taking at least some of the smoke back to earth. The regions many waterfalls start to get going again and trekking starts to get a little bit more, well, slippery.

May sees a slight dip in temperatures and a pretty much doubling of rainfall from the preceding month in Thailand's northeast. That said, given how hot it was in April, May remains a very warm month. Expect rain every other day.

Unlike the rest of the country, in May there is a small hike in temperatures, but as with near everywhere else there is a substantial increase in the rainfall. The northern section of the Gulf Coast sees less rain than Ko Samui and surrounds, so if you're after some beach time and are not fussed about heading out to an island, sticking to an area like Hua Hin should see you get slightly better weather — but you won't be bone dry.

Only Ko Chang gets more rain than Phuket, Krabi and surrounds in May. Temperatures are only slightly off from the highs of April, so you'll still be hot — just wet as well. It's not all day torrential affairs, but expect a heavy downpour for an hour or two most days. In between the rains, if you're in luck, you'll score some brilliant sunshine. May sees the commencement of very good deals for hotels on this coast, so if you're willing to gamble on getting wet, you can get some fabulous hotel deals on Phuket and Ko Phi Phi .

May brings the start of the tourist low season in Thailand with most destinations generally seeing a drop-off in visitor numbers once the Songkran holiday period is over in April. Hotels and domestic airlines in Thailand often begin to run promotions in May so there are usually some good deals available throughout the month.

May is still the hot season in Thailand, but increasing amounts of rainfall later in the month signal the gradual transition into the rainy season. That doesn’t mean that you will see relentless rain during your stay, but be prepared for some potentially heavy downpours at any time in May. Temperatures remain hot and during a typical two week stay you can expect to see plenty of blue sky and sunshine mixed in with the showers. Humidity levels are high across the country in May and it’s a month where you are likely to appreciate the air-conditioning in your room more than ever.

Which is the best Thai island or beach resort to visit in May?

Whichever island or beach resort you opt for in May, you can expect to see some rain. Rainfall levels during the month are lower on the Gulf of Thailand coast compared to the Andaman Coast. Average rainfall levels are higher on the Andaman Coast due to the effects of the south-west monsoon. This usually blows in from the Indian Ocean during June-September, but it can sometimes start early in May. This brings higher rainfall levels to destinations including Phuket , Krabi  and the Trang islands . Downpours can be torrential and may be accompanied by gusty winds and high waves. Some boat services to outlying islands in the Andaman Sea are temporarily suspended during May-October, but it should be noted that it doesn’t rain all day, every day. There is still plenty of sunshine and temperatures remain high.

The Gulf Coast of Thailand does not feel the full effect of the south-west monsoon making May a good month to visit islands including Ko Samui , Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao . And on the mainland, Hua Hin and the Cha Am area are also an excellent choice for a beach break. Over on the eastern seaboard there are varying levels of rainfall with amounts high on Ko Chang and comparatively low in Pattaya and Ko Samet .

A change of winds and summer storms can see jellyfish arriving in Thai waters during the rainy season. Most are relatively harmless, but box jellyfish can also show up and it is something to be aware of. Swimmers should also pay heed to any warning flags on beaches. There are fatalities every year because swimmers ignore the no swimming flags and get caught in rip tides.

May events and festivals in Thailand

The onset of the rainy season in May/June has traditional significance in Thailand. The importance of rice to the country is celebrated with the Royal Ploughing Ceremony in Bangkok . There is no fixed date for this event, but it usually falls in May. The rice-growing heartlands in the north-east of Thailand also hold their own unique festivities ahead of the rice planting season with home-made rockets launched and boisterous parties held to encourage a good crop.

There are a number of important Buddhist holidays throughout the year, but the most significant in Thailand is Visakha Bucha Day . The exact date depends on the full-moon, but often falls in May. Visakha Bucha Day commemorates three defining events in the life of the Lord Buddha: the day on which he was born, reached his enlightenment 35 years later and the day he died and entered Nirvana 45 years after that. Visakha Bucha Day is a public holiday in Thailand and there are restrictions in place on alcohol sales . The first of May is also a public holiday for Labour Day.

Silky-soft beaches, jungle-draped mountains, incredible food and a well-connected position at the heart of Southeast Asia have made Thailand a tourism hub for decades.

It welcomes more than 11 million visitors a year. All the same, travelers who dream of perpetually sunny skies and balmy weather might be dismayed at the pelting rain that arrives like clockwork every July or the sky-high price of their hotel from December to January.

The kingdom is full of diversions – myriad night markets, thundering waterfalls, even cherry blossoms and the occasional dusting of frost – but to experience them for yourself, you need to be in the right place at the right time. Here’s how.

December to February is best for beaches

The prevailing joke about Thai weather is that the country has three seasons: hot; wet and hot; and really, really hot. That may be, but when the “cool” season rolls around in December, you will find Thais bundled up in sweaters and even puffer jackets to combat temperatures that fall as low as 23°C (73°F).

While this may be cold for Thais, it’s perfect for international travelers hitting the beach, especially those escaping the northern winter, and resorts like Phuket , Samui and Krabi are predictably packed with sun-seekers at this time of year.

Daytime highs of 31°C (88°F) make outdoor activities warm but bearable, while nights are a hive of activity, with street food vendors lining the sidewalks and markets clad in fairy lights tempting even the most unwilling of shoppers.

The cool season is not for beachcombers alone. This time of year sees frost up north in the mountains as temperatures drop to 13°C (55°F). The northeast region even ushers in its own cherry blossom season as Phu Lom Lo erupts in a burst of pink Himalayan cherry blooms. Early morning hikers are rewarded with sunrise views over a sea of fog at the northern border with Laos , and wildflowers dapple the slopes of Doi Suthep and Phu Tabberk .

Not surprisingly then, this time is considered Thailand’s high season, when hotel and transportation prices are at their peak. However, the payoff is the kingdom at arguably its most beautiful and welcoming, temperature-wise.

March and April are best for tropical fruit and Songkran

The weather, even for Thais, becomes alarmingly toasty during Thailand’s “summer” when temperatures average 30°C (87°F). School is out, meaning the capital is less crowded than usual, and the beaches are typically jammed with Bangkokians seeking reprieve from the heat. Meanwhile, temperatures in the usually temperate north soar to 36°C (97°F).

While it may seem a miserable time to visit, foodies will have a field day because all of Thailand’s most beloved fruits – mangoes, mangosteens, rambutans and Marian plums – are in season.

In mid-April, Thailand celebrates its new year, Songkran , and the streets burst into joyful water fights. You’ll find the entire country in celebration: families seeking blessings from their elders, Thais dancing in the streets, and travelers receiving benedictions in the form of perfumed water on the hands, daubings of brightly colored powder on the cheeks or (most likely) a blast of water in the face. Fans of water fights (and getting drenched) will find their like-minded brethren anywhere in the kingdom.

Meanwhile, fans of an empty Bangkok can take advantage of… an empty Bangkok. That means breezy commutes from one end of the city to the other, less competition at popular restaurants and fewer crowds to contend with at shopping malls and theaters. The change in the city is so pronounced that quite a few Bangkokians prize this time of year, opting to make sure that when Songkhran rolls around, they celebrate in the capital.

May to October is best for accommodation bargains

Thailand’s rainy season is long, but it doesn’t necessarily mean non-stop torrential downpours. Monsoon rains, especially before July, are typically violent but short, usually arriving in the early evening and lasting for 20 to 30 minutes. (Luckily, Thailand’s location means it avoids the strong typhoons experienced by Vietnam and the Philippines.) The problem is Bangkok traffic snarls for hours as a result, but travelers in less congested destinations are not necessarily affected, and hotel and transportation prices linger at months-long lows.

From May to July, beach resorts on the Andaman Sea side of Thailand – especially on weekdays – are basically deserted, claiming only a fraction of the prices they would normally charge during high season. This means that even at five-star resorts, choice rooms can be rented for far less than their usual rate. And while there will likely be daily rains, they’re usually brief.

Low-season rates extend to non-beach-but-still-popular destinations like Chiang Mai and Khao Sok , where a treasure trove of accommodation options, from floating bungalows to mountaintop cabins, awaits savvy bargain hunters willing to put up with a sudden shower or two. In contrast, July and August are peak season for islands in the Gulf of Thailand like Samui , where the weather is less affected by monsoon rains.

From September to October, the northeast is brimming with waterfalls, providing impromptu bathing areas for visitors with the foresight to bring bathing suits or even just towels. A word of warning: this is also when flooding may occur in the north or northeast, with water reaching all the way to Bangkok in some years. Only riverside areas are at risk, so make sure to check before you go.

November is best for experiencing Loi Krathong

November marks the beginning of the dry season and is considered the shoulder to high season, but bargains can still be found among the bigger local hotel chains.

On the night of November’s full moon, the country celebrates its Loi Krathong festival, marking the end of the rainy season. This is also when people float away their sins by placing candles on makeshift river rafts or lanterns in hopes of welcoming the coming year with a clean slate.

Royal Plowing Ceremony Just like the Bun Bang Festival, the Plowing Ceremony celebrates the beginning of the rice planting season. Held in Bangkok and presided over by the monarch or an appointee, the Royal Plowing Ceremony examines what two oxen eat after plowing ceremonial land. What they eat predicts the coming growing season’s bountifulness.

Visakha Bucha Also called Vesak Day, this festival is the holiest of Buddhist holidays, and is practiced throughout Southeast Asia. It falls on the full moon of the 6th lunar month, so the date changes every year. Visakha Bucha celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of the Buddha, and worshippers gather to pray and make offerings.

It is usually celebrated on weekends mid-May, just before crops are planted at the beginning of the monsoon. If you can, try to make it to Yasothon for the spectacle as the celebrations reach fever pitch here. Harking back to a Buddhist fertility ritual, the rocket festival serves a practical function of diffusing anxiety around the monsoon, and allows everyone to have a blast before returning to the fields prepared to get work on sowing season.

On the first day of the festival, villagers bring their home made bang fai/rocket to the city’s main shrine to pay their respects. The action for tourists picks up on the second day with street parades and traditional dances to live music. After the performances, there is a Buddhist merit making ceremony, and then the highlight of the festival, i.e. the rocket show. Keep an eye out for people sporting masks, they are likely to be carrying water guns and will soak you, all in fun, of course.

Make sure to stick around for the final day, when villagers launch their homemade bamboo rockets into the air, and pray for rain. For added fun, there is a panel judging the rockets by the distance they travel in the air. Misfired rockets are disqualified, and the owner is thrown in a puddle of mud for ritual mockery and to put out any minor burns from the misfire.

Head over to Chaiyaphum in the North East for a one-of-a-kind experience, known as the Brutal Ordination Parade. Having worked hard and made merit, monks are put to the final test before their ordination. They are paraded about town on bamboo platforms and shaken hard to test their inner equilibrium.

Held every year since 1971 before Buddhist Lent, the ceremony is particularly held for the young men of the Ban Non Tan-Ban Non Salao communities of Phu Khiao, Chaiyaphum who wish to become Buddhist monks. Each aspirant is put in a bamboo chair and carried around the village for 3 kilometers while being shaken violently. In theory, those that fall off the chair can not be ordained, but in practice, perhaps testament to their hard work and discipline, no one has ever fallen off.

• Central Thailand (Bangkok): 22–31°C (72–88°F)
• Southern Thailand (Phuket): 23–39°C (73–84°F)

December is the coolest month in Thailand, but it's still warm everywhere but in the cool/mild mountainous north.

Thailand is one of the top countries in Asia for US and European tourists planning on a holiday to the tropics. And Thailand never disappoints of course. From our own trips to Thailand, we've learnt one of the best times to visit can be in May. But why? Here are our thoughts:

• temperatures rise from April, until end of May
• the rainy season begins before May comes to an end

Thailand has an average temperature of 91° Fahrenheit year round. The warmth heats up in March, April and May to dip again by June. If you holiday in many places in Thailand before May, the humidity can spoil your enjoyment. Holidaying during May light rains (the upcoming monsoon) balance out any humidity issues. The rain is not heavy (not yet) nor does it last long, but the effect is being a little cooler.

You can expect it to rain most days with Thailand's summer but it's never long before the rains are gone. Quickly the sun and fun returns.

Rainy Season in Thailand

The rainy season in Thailand isn't as terrible as it sounds. The central region of Thailand and the south are affected more so than the north:

• the southwest monsoon brings rain for summer
• the northeast monsoon from India brings dry, cooler weather for winter

Thailand's summer months for travelers are March, April, May and June (before going into the low season). There may be rain as early as April and the rain lasts until near October coming to a close. It's September and October Thailand have the heaviest of the rain, thus you need to know up front:

• potential for delay and cancellations, regards ferries and flights
• severity differs depending on where you are located, in the north or central and south

Of all the times we've traveled, never have we had any cancellations. The monsoon season for Thailand isn't as aggressive as what it can be for Malaysia. The Philippines too can face some stormy weather as well. Vietnam and Thailand seem to get only heavy rain, at worst. Take note the cheapest time to travel in Thailand can be during May, June and July. The rains bring different outdoor experiences, temperatures never fall below 85° Fahrenheit.

When is the worst time to visit Phuket? It depends on your perspective. Towards the end of the southwest monsoon, the peak season picks up by the end of October. Between October and February is Thailand's winter season, costs do soar. Prices for flights, accommodation, eating out and attractions inflate for the crowds arriving. If the expense doesn't bother you, the winter months are better.

The summer months are as good albeit hotter, that's all. And some attractions may close, depending on which month of summer you holiday. The worst time to land on Phuket therefore is in the rainy season (June until October).

Thailand has warm weather all year round, peak season or not. Thailand never disappoints. Now would be a good time to look at those 5 best places to visit on your Thailand holiday. There are amazing cultural experiences all over Thailand, such as their temples. If visiting Thailand is your first time, it's a good idea to also visit Bangkok City. You will want to spend at least 2D1N in the city because there is a lot of energy and vibrancy:

• enjoy a meal in chinatown
• go on a river cruise
• go for a drink for the nightlife

Once you're satisfied with the city's culture, the museums and art galleries you are ready. Begin your Thailand holiday in earnest and get ready to explore beyond the capital.

One of the must-see places close to Bangkok are the ruins of this ancient town. From the town's center is the best spot to begin. Exploring on foot, spend a whole morning is our suggestion having a good looking around. As with all over Thailand there are cheeky monkeys who'll pester you. Don't encourage them any further with food or they'll never leave you alone. And be sure valuables like jewelry, glasses and smartphone are secure.

The highlight of the ruins is "Monkey Temple", a short distance from the train station. As interesting the ruins are, you may find something else interesting. The monkeys will climb all over you if you let them. Sure, they're small and cute, fun even but be wary of how unhygienic they are. They're wild animals after all and you've little control over them. For reasons of cleanliness, we walked away when ever one got too close.

We saw one gentleman who moments earlier fed a few, troubled by a half dozen swarming over him. Other tourists looking on could only laugh at the calamity, but you can bet he regretted giving them food. Wild monkeys have been known to scratch and bite, so feed them at your own risk.

By the way, if you do find ancient temples of great interest, then Ayutthaya Historical Park should be on your bucket list of places to visit.

• Top 10: Most Visited Attractions in Bangkok

Coming to Krabi for Phang Nga Bay alone, makes the trip all worthwhile for you. Even if you've never kayaked in your life, now would be the best time to learn. Phang Nga Town is sandwiched between two natural karst pillars. They tower like giants, overshadowing what is a small town. Thailand is famous the world over, for its karst limestone monoliths. Vietnam too has them, you only need to look at Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay.

Every time you see one, what an amazing feeling. Little ones and large ones you are spellbound by each when you go out on the bay kayaking. The calm waters of the bay are perfect for water activities. A tour guide will take a group of you out, on what is a peaceful experience and yet exciting too for teenagers, in tow. It actually does feel as if it's a different world. Early morning before sunrise is the best time for your adventure:

• feelings of you floating on the water are real
• mist rising off the surface all around creates unforgettable memories

What caught us off guard was the sheer peacefulness of this natural wonderland. That was before the mid-morning deluge of tourists took to the water, of course. It's best you book with a tour operator for several reasons:

• they'll pick you up and drop you off at your hotel
• lunch and bottled water usually included
• all equipment is provided, and basic safety demonstrated given

Best Things to Do in Krabi?

There are beaches of course. The one most foreign tourists head for is Railay Beach with stunning cliffs nearby. But in our opinion, it's better to spend your time at Ao Nang Beach a little out of town. When you tire of the beaches, look out for:

• Krabi Town is worth going for a stroll in, you'll have no trouble finding a nice restaurant
• the towns night market is a must try, crowded but an amazing atmosphere
• jungle fun with the Klong Thom Hot Springs
• kayaking off Hong Island, or take a boat trip instead
• the Buddhist temple of Wat Kaew Korawaram

The town feels like it hasn't changed in decades, retaining what is original of Thailand. Your typical "small town" that refused to grow up. The charms are endearing and appealing, you'll either love it or hate it.

Getting from Bangkok to Krabi

Daily flights arrive in Krabi from Bangkok, getting to the town is hassle free. You arrive at your hotel two hours later, from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. Krabi's airport isn't far away. If Phuket Island is your ultimate destination on landing in Bangkok, then spare a thought:

• a small detour in your plans for Phuket by first spending some time in Krabi Town?
• arrive in Krabi for the sole purpose of Ko Lanta Island, May is your last chance of enjoying this serene Island before the monsoon

Either option will add so much wealth to your holiday "lifetime experience" barometer. Flying from Krabi early afternoon ensures you are at your Phuket accommodation early. Unpacked and ready for an evening meal and entertainment.

You'll happen across Mae Hong Son we hope in Thailand's north. It's the part of the country that plays out nice for you, if you're seeking a place to chill out. Pai is a town you'll have heard the online backpacking community rant and rave about. Plan to spend a few days at least, departing from Chiang Mai City.

Pai lies north of Chiang Mai, to the west. Chiang Rai is north of Chiang Mai, so not to mistake either one for the other. What's the town like? Tradition is upheld in the town and surrounding areas and life is very slow moving, no one is in any rush. It's as far off the beaten track you can get, and yet so much for you to see and enjoy. You travel for the beauty, waterfalls and hot springs, the stunning landscape backdrops.

As you'd imagine being elevated so high, a lot of the town's appeal for travelers (not merely backpackers) is the nature. Beautiful landscapes all around, we felt amazing visiting:

• the Yun Lai Viewpoint
• Phra That Mae Yen

We managed all that in the same day, and the following day we woke late (a rare occasion) to nosey around town. Much later, we made our way back to Chiang Mai City. If you want to enjoy nature but "do nothing", put Pai on your bucket list. Be cautious that May and June are peak months for travelers to the town, book accommodation well in advance before your arrival.

A bone of contention is where do you stay in Pai? Do you stay in town close to the amenities or do you stay out the outskirts.

If you feel sociable and are expecting to make new friends. If that's the case, then stay within the town otherwise opt for a homestay on the edges of town. Because the town is a magnet for travelers and is quite boisterous most evenings. The town is laidback, yes, and there's a slower pace of life but noisy too a lot of the time.

Chiang Mai City to Pai Town

It can't be no more than a 4-hour journey by bus from Chiang Mai to Pai Town. If you prefer you can rent a taxi and arrive two hours later, a lot quicker. Way up the pro's and con's because: the bus is cheaper but a private taxi more comfortable. Is the taxi worth it? Decide yourself, pay US$11 for a bus ticket or US$50 for the taxi. If you are backpacking solo or as a couple, the bus is adequate for your needs.

4. Ko Chang

This amazing little beauty is affectionally known as "Elephant Island", for the shape of it. Whereas Phuket is on the west of Thailand, this one ― Thailand's third largest ― is on the east side, within the Trat Province close to Cambodia. The Island is best reached by ferry, yet there is a small airport in Trat you can fly to from Bangkok City. Is Ko Chang Island worth visiting? In our view, it is.

It's worth bothering yourself to go out of the way for several reasons:

• lesser known compared to Phuket Island and Samui Island, fewer international tourists
• beautiful beaches, pleasant snorkeling and the interior is worth exploring too
• restaurants are all good as is the Islands accommodation

It's the perfect Island to be to get away to because mainstream tourism is only now learning about it. Now is the time to visit, before the Island gets an airport and tourists swarm in.

Regardless of recent developments the Island still manages to keep its rugged charms. Perfect for enjoying the beaches and exploring the jungles. You can expect to stay in anything from a basic hut like structure to a luxurious tropical resort. There's a wide choice of accommodation to suit budget and taste. On our 2D1N stay everyone we met was happy and content to be away from the crowds. Even as late as May, there are still crowds on both Islands of Phuket and Samui.

Ko Chang Beach Guide

The Island of Ko (or Koh how you prefer) Chang is a beach heaven for sun worshippers. As we said, the Island is pretty much void of crowds, and a month before the monsoon is in full swing May is a good month for you. The beaches are nothing short of spectacular in every way you imagined, eight of them we liked. Our top choices of those are:

• Bang Bao Beach
• Kai Bae Beach
• Lonely Beach
• Klong Prao Beach

Wild monkeys are everywhere, and they play havoc with you. Don't leave your possessions unattended otherwise they'll be off with them. The little devils are quick (too quick for their own good). Lonely Beach in particular is horrendous for them.

Many of the beaches have a resort with great facilities. There's a restaurant and bar, and street food stalls. Usually, someone is renting out mopeds or equipment for water activities. The beaches are popular, but not every beach has developed too much. And that's the Island's saving grace in our opinion, nature's beauty still stands out.

Moving around the Island is easy. Rent a moped or motorbike for the day and off you go exploring. Much of the Island does have asphalt roads but some places not so. You've got dirt roads to make do with, closer to the interior of the Island. Take care with your speed as there are farmers, villagers and animals using the roads too. Exploring the Island on two wheels is quite exhilarating, setting off early after breakfast is the right thing to do.

Ko Kut Island neighbors Ko Chang Island don't mistake thinking they're both like for like. Neither of the two are identical. But you are now in a dilemma, aren't you? Which Island to choose, having flown into Trat's airport from Bangkok City.

So, what is so different to Ko Kut from Ko Chang? Easy: Ko Chang doesn't have the same volume of tourists, there are fewer who travel out to Ko Chang. Phuket Island, Ko Samui Island and the Phi Phi Islands are the most attractive options. Ko Chang Island is little heard about but there are growing numbers finding their way to the Island. The only difference between Ko Kut and Ko Chang are there is even fewer foreign travelers to Ko Kut Island.

Ko Kut is one of the larger Islands (yet smaller than Ko Chang Island) in the vicinity. Local villages strewn all along the coastline, very knit tight communities. Staying on the Island is very pleasant and rewarding, you do feel closer to local people. The snorkeling feels even better, it's superb. Whereas Ko Chang has more developments, such as hotels and resorts, Ko Kut less so. The natural beauty hasn't been swept back to make room for concrete and asphalt.

Your stressful journey is a long distant memory as soon as you step on the Island, likewise on Ko Chang too. For a day or two you stay, and it is so perfect tears well up when you've to leave.

Ko Kut (or Ko Chang) Ferry

Getting to the Island isn't such a big deal as it may seem. Yes, the Island is further out from the Trat mainland but still accessible. Ko Chang Island is closer to the mainland by the way, with Ko Kut further south. There is only one way to get yourself onto either of the Islands, from Trat Town. First, you need to travel 30km to Laem Sok Pier .

It's not necessary for you to stay in Trat Town any longer than you need. Walk out of arrivals and into a taxi direct to the pier ― provided you've flown in early morning. You can opt for a speedboat, or a catamaran to take you to either Ko Chang or Ko Kut, with a stop off at Ko Mak on most journeys. Many services exist to take you, it matters not which one you choose as journey times are indifferent.

If it's an afternoon flight you have from Bangkok, an overnight stay in Trat Town is a must. Ferry services operate in the mornings only.

Final Thoughts

Phuket never made our list, because we've scribbled about it before. It's a top summer destination for sure, read our Phuket travel guide separately (links elsewhere in this guide). We didn't see the point of repeating ourselves, that's all. If we had covered Phuket, then we would have had to miss out Krabi and we weren't comfortable doing so.
