A 1,250mm wheelbase provides tons of stability at speed.

29er vs 27.5 Wheel Size

If you’re planning to pursue World Cup racing dreams, a low-slung 29er with a long wheelbase is probably the way to go. More capable at high speed, it will provide its pilot the poise to push past his or her comfort zone. But if spinning park laps and mastering airborne tricks is your primary goal, a 27.5-inch-wheeled steed with a shorter rear end will be more playful and poppy—and arguably more fun.

“If you’re just getting started with downhill or are focused on racing, I’d say look at a 29er,” affirms Dylan Howes, senior R&D engineer for Trek. “They’re fast, stable, and confidence-inspiring. But if you’re already experienced and are looking to hit jumps with some style, then a 27.5 may be the better choice. It’ll be easier to whip around in the air.”

Carbon Versus Aluminum Frames

If money is no object, carbon is the choice. Its lower weight enhances acceleration, and the composite material does a better job of absorbing vibrations. “You can feel it more than on a trail bike because you’re going faster and hitting obstacles harder,” explains Howes. “I also feel like carbon bikes return energy better, so you can rocket out of corners and maintain momentum.”

Bicycle part, Rim, Wheel, Bicycle wheel, Tire, Automotive design, Carbon, Bicycle frame, Auto part, Vehicle,

But durability is another important factor, explains Nick Anderson, lead engineer for Santa Cruz. “Typically aluminum can handle a baseball-size rock strike to the down tube and still be fine,” he says. “With carbon, not so much. That can be an expensive problem—and carbon frames are already more expensive than aluminum ones.”

Coil Versus Air Shocks

Outside of wheel size, this is arguably the most hotly debated topic in the downhill bike arena. While it used to be that coil shocks were the overwhelming choice for DH sleds, air shocks have begun to catch up in recent years. Generally speaking, coil shocks are more sensitive off the top and provide more consistent performance, especially during extended descents. But they are also heavier and you can’t tune them as finely as their air shock brethren.

Bicycle tire, Bicycle frame, Wheel, Bicycle wheel rim, Mode of transport, Bicycle wheel, Bicycle part, Spoke, Transport, Bicycle,

“Coils are more reliable and have better initial sensitivity, so the suspension will have a better overall feeling,” says Anderson, noting that Santa Cruz sells only DH bikes spec’d with coil shocks. “From a racing standpoint, riders only run air shocks to solve a problem, say if the frame’s kinematics aren’t progressive enough to provide adequate bottom out resistance.”

But Trek’s Howes points to air shocks’ adjustability as the most critical feature. “It’s so much easier to tune an air shock because you can add or take away volume spacers,” he says. “We design and spec our bikes for air shocks and feel like, for the average rider, they are definitely the way to go because of that adjustability and progressivity to better handle big hits.”

Nukeproof dissent 920 comp.

Dissent 290 Comp

Nukeproof’s new Dissent 920 Comp is an ideal way to get into downhill riding and racing. The sub-$4,000 price affords you a robust aluminum frame, DH-tested 200mm RockShox Boxxer Select R fork and RockShox Super Deluxe Coil Select R shock, and a seven-speed SRAM GX drivetrain. The Dissent is highly adjustable, too. A main pivot flip chip provides four main pivot positions, altering the progression of the suspension, the company says. There’s also a three-position chainstay chip that allows you to adjust your chainstay length by 10mm (in increments of 5mm). Internal cable routing and Boost rear spacing bring this Nukeproof up to date with industry standards, making it a competitive ride for years of DH ambition.

Supreme DH 29 Signature 2020

The Commencal Supreme DH 29 occupies a prominent place in mountain bike history as the first complete production-ready, 29-inch downhill bike to hit the consumer market. It promptly sold out two production runs, proving that big-wheeled DH bikes were here to stay. For model year 2020, the bike of World Cup superstar Amaury Pierron continues to rely on a high pivot point (HPP) suspension setup whose primary aim is to improve shock absorption and vibration damping, while also bolstering critical rear wheel traction. Component highlights of this race-ready machine include a top-of-the-line Fox Factory DHX2 shock and a Fox Factory 49 Float fork (both with 200mm of trail-smoothing travel), SRAM’s well-regarded Code R brakes with 200mm rotors front and rear, and grippy Maxxis Assegai 29x2.5 tires.

Santa cruz v10 s 29, santa cruz v10 s carbon cc 29.

V10 S Carbon CC 29

Arguably the most famous downhill race bike of all time, the V10 was first launched back in 2002 and has accumulated numerous World Cup race wins while being piloted by the likes of Steve Peat and Greg Minnaar, among others. It was also one of the first DH platforms to make the jump to 29er wheels, which have since become the norm at the sport’s highest level. Today, you can get a V10 with 29er or 27.5 hoops, allowing riders to choose based on height and riding style. Dedicated park rats may lean to 27.5 wheels, but the pick here is 29er for its all-out speed and rollover capability. The V10 S 29 comes with Fox Performance Elite suspension and SRAM GX drivetrain components to help keep cost in check. And like the more expensive build options, this bike features adjustable chainstay length to enhance front/rear balance, a lower suspension leverage rate to improve shock performance, and internal derailleur cable routing through the swing arm to protect the housing from damage.

Pivot phoenix pro saint, phoenix pro saint, $5,699.

Phoenix Pro Saint, $5,699

One of the longest and lightest bikes in this roundup, the Phoenix Carbon has a 1,264mm wheelbase and comes in under 35 pounds for size large. (And that’s with tubes and beefy alloy wheels.) Wheel size is 27.5, meaning this is a bike that can be raced one weekend, and then whipped around the bike park the next. The DW-link suspension soaks up big hits—and actually pedals reasonably well. Head angle is a super slack 62.5 degrees, and Pivot offers an angle-adjusting headset that allows you to tweak it 0.75 degrees in either direction. Spec highlights of the Shimano Saint build include Fox Factory fork and shock and rowdy-ready DT Swiss FR560 aluminum wheels.

—Race-Day Wheels Included—

Intense m16 pro build, intense m16 pro build.

M16 PRO BUILD

The eye-catching, sculpted lines of the M16 have made it one of the most sought-after downhill bikes. Unique features include an adjustable dual-link suspension that allows for two travel settings: 214mm and 241mm. This 27.5-wheeled trail smasher is also exceptionally light thanks in part to its full carbon design, including the rocker links, which are more typically made from aluminum. The 200mm RockShox BoXXer fork and Super Deluxe Coil World Cup shock are other highlights, and SRAM XO1 drivetrain and Shimano Saint brakes complete this race-ready package. At the time of this writing, Intense is including a set of e*thirteen Lg1R enduro carbon race wheels with every bike sold from its website.

—Lightweight—

Equipment session 9.9 29.

Session 9.9 29

With a claimed weight of 34.5 pounds—with tubes—this is one of the lightest 29er DH bikes around. The frame’s adjustable Mino Link allows you to toggle between a 62.1- and 62.6-degree head angle, while also changing bottom bracket height by 10mm. Wheelbase is 1,268mm for size large, and it has 200mm/210mm of front and rear suspension. This is a top-of-the-line bike, and the parts—Fox Factory air suspension at both ends with four-way adjustable damping, Shimano Saint drivetrain and brakes, MRP carbon chain guide, and a Bontrager carbon handlebar—reflect that position.

—Podium-Ready—

Transition tr11 carbon xo1, transition tr11 carbon x01.

TR11 Carbon X01

With multiple World Cup podium wins under the expert guidance of Tahnee Seagrave, the TR11 has proven itself as one of the top downhill race bikes on the market. Long and low geometry makes it stable and predictable at speed, while the carbon frame and upper-tier SRAM XO1 build help keep this 27.5 track charger’s weight in check. The frame also has integrated molded-rubber down-tube and chainstay protectors to quiet chain slap and guard against rock strikes. Other spec highlights include a Fox DHX2 Factory shock, Fox 40 Grip 2 Performance Elite fork, Maxxis Minion 3C DH tires, and SRAM Code RSC brakes.

—Carbon-Aluminum—

Scott gambler 910, gambler 910.

Gambler 910

The Gambler’s mixed-material frame—a carbon front with an aluminum rear—helps keep vibrations in check and prices down. It offers 200mm of travel, but it’s this bike’s wide range of adjustability that truly stands out. It can accommodate 27.5- or 29-inch wheels, the chainstay length can be set at either 439mm or 435mm, and there’s a flip chip that adjusts bottom bracket height and shock progression, allowing riders to pick the best setup for their style or track conditions. The head-tube angle is either 62.9 or 63.2 degrees, depending on the flip chip orientation. When you’re tackling gnarly steeps, Scott recommends you shorten the chainstay, slacken the head angle, and make the shock more progressive by using the lower chip setting. But if the day’s terrain is flatter, a longer chainstay, less slack setup, and higher BB is best for maintaining flat-out speed.

Specialized Demo Expert 29

Specialized demo expert 29.

Demo Expert 29

The latest Demo features a new take on Specialized’s signature four-bar suspension design. This iteration has a more-rearward axle path, claimed to improve the bike’s ability to carry momentum over square-edged bumps. This characteristic was requested by Specialized-sponsored world champion Loic Bruni. It seems to work, as Bruni has been on fire in 2019. This suspension system is also on the new Enduro , which we found floated through rock gardens with no hang-ups. The Demo Expert model features an aluminum frame with increased reach (up 20mm compared to the previous version) hung with RockShox suspension, a SRAM GX drivetrain, and Code R brakes.

You Can Have a 29er Downhill Bike - Trek Introduces the New Session 27.5 and Session 29 17

Big dh wheels for the masses and refinements across the board for trek session..

Profile picture for user sspomer

It’s a big day in mountain bike land with the launch of Trek’s new carbon Session downhill bikes. The most shocking news of the announcement is their commitment to a production 29-inch-wheeled DH machine which you will be able to buy. All you need is $4999.99 for a frame, fork and rear shock and a little patience to get you to October.

bici trek downhill

Trek’s Session has been a World Cup podium regular for years and the latest generation of the bike features refinements that Trek hopes translates into more speed for racers and more fun for those cranking out park laps.

Trek Session 9.9 27.5 RSL, 203mm travel

What's New with Trek Session

While Trek continues to offer alloy versions of the Session, we’re focused on the carbon 27.5 and 29 models. The downhill bikes showcase the design features we’re used to seeing from the brand - OCLV carbon construction with carbon armor, Mino link geometry adjustment, Active Braking Pivot, Control Freak internal cable routing, and an E2 tapered head tube. The major frame design change this time around is the switch from Trek’s Full Floater suspension platform to a fixed lower shock mount arrangement.

Where did Full Floater go? Trek's Dylan Howes explains

Goodbye Full Floater, hello fixed lower shock mount.

The Full Floater was originally designed to provide that last bit of extra progression in the travel. The downside to the design was a compromise in stiffness due to the constraints of the parts in motion. By fixing the lower shock mount to the front triangle, Trek was able to add stiffness to the overall system.

Prototype with direct shock mount.

FOX and Trek Suspension Developments

Trek’s Suspension lab also worked with FOX to develop a Session-specific tune on the Factory Float X2 rear shock. The metric-sized shock has a longer stroke, which means a lower leverage ratio and the new internals in the air shock offer more mid-stroke support and that extra bit of end-stroke progression that the Full Floater used to provide. The Float X2 shocks are user-tunable with the addition or subtraction of volume spacers.

Trek's Suspension R&D Lab with a variety of prototypes.

FOX and Trek also went deeper on their Float X2 tuning tweaks to remove the initial platform the air shock had built in to it. The platform existed to help with pedaling across a variety of bikes. Trek wanted their Session’s Float X2 to be pure downhill. The internal changes create an X2 which has "better than coil" performance in the initial small-bump stroke of the travel. When Trek Factory Racing ripper, Gee Atherton, was informed of the Float X2's changes, he understood the benefits of the new air shock but preferred the feel of the coil just because he’d been riding them for so long. Had he not been injured at the Fort William BDS race a couple weeks ago, he may have found his way onto the air shock eventually. For those set on coil, don’t fret, 225x75mm metric coil shocks will fit.

Jose Gonzalez on the Session-specific FOX Factory Float X2 Tune

bici trek downhill

The Session Carbon is available in S, M, L and XL sizes. Though this bike obviously “looks like a session,” the bike is longer and more aggressive which is where downhill race machines are headed. Reach measurements have been increased by 20mm and the bike has a lower bottom bracket height thanks to input from the Athertons.

Session 27.5 Geometry (scroll left/right)

Session 29 Geometry (scroll left/right)

The stock head angle on the 27.5 is 63-degrees, but with the combo of Trek’s Mino Link and the included 1-degree off-set headset cups you can tweak your geometry as needed. Head tube angles can go from a super slack 62-degrees or as steep as 64.5-degrees, and bottom bracket height can be tweaked by as much as 8mm. Chainstay length is adjustable between 445mm or 446mm depending on the Mino Link setting.

Trek's Dylan Howes on why the Session 29 head angle is listed as slacker than the 27.5

We were able to use the same main frame for 27.5 and 29 but chainstays, seatstays and rocker links are all different. Using the same main, we set the BB-to-ground height the same, but to meet up with the fork and the bigger diameter wheel, the frame “tips back” about a degree. We correct for this using the angled headset cups to get the 29er back to a 63-degree HT angle. Out of the box, we intend the 27.5 bike to be run with a straight headset and the 29er with a “+1 deg” cup as the standard or nominal setting. We don’t really expect the rider or racer who has bought into the 29 to want to go steeper than 63-degrees, but we could see some of the more park/jumping-oriented riders who would choose the 27.5 bike for ride quality to possibly want a 64 degree HT angle. The cups are something we include with both bikes to give the rider more set-up and adjustment options. But bottom line, intended / standard geometry is 63 degree HT angle for both bikes.

Introducing the Trek Session 29 Carbon

bici trek downhill

Let’s get to the one you’ve all been waiting for, the Session 29 Carbon. That’s right, 29-inch wheeled downhill bikes are here for the masses and Trek could be considered the biggest reason why. There has been experimentation with 29ers in downhill for years, but until now the complete package of forks, tires and wheels hasn’t been available and DH bikes from five to ten years ago were generally a lot more compact than the stretched-out machines we see today. Trek saw the potential for 29ers in DH as far back as 2009 with early but less-than-successful prototyping. With the advent of modern race geometries and component designs, they revisited wheel size a couple years ago and began working closely with FOX to make sure suspension on the front end wasn’t going to hold them back.

Dylan Howes on the genesis of a Trek 29 DH bike

2009 29er prototype with 180mm travel, a 64.5-degree head angle and 440mm chainstays.

They carefully tested 29-inch DH wheels with modified 180mm-travel 27.5 FOX 40 forks. The data gained from those tests opened the eyes of both Trek and FOX and the 29-inch-specific FOX 40 came to life. While the Santa Cruz Syndicate was the first team to show up at the World Cup in Lourdes with the forks, there’s no doubt it was Trek’s push that excited FOX enough to get the product rolling. Now we’re seeing the snowball effect across World Cup DH teams that have access to the 29er FOX 40.

Later prototype with modified 27.5 FOX 40 that Cole Picchiottino raced with some success.

But 29ers Can't Turn?

The roll-over-anything, haul-ass-downhill wheels are great for World Cuppers going 50mph, but what about tighter handling and cornering? Trek gathered data from over one hundred downhill runs across various riders. They used data acquisition equipment and Lit Pro software to monitor speeds on every section of a variety of test tracks from SoCal to Whistler. The software provided side-by-side analysis of runs on each wheel size. It was no surprise that the 29-inch wheels shined in the rougher, straighter sections, but eyes were opened when the data showed that cornering speeds were also the same or even faster on the big wheels. Trek’s Jose Gonzales noted that he and his testers agreed that the 27.5 just "felt busier" through the turns while the 29er felt more calm. The result was less energy spent by the rider in addition to quicker times.

Dylan Howes discusses cornering

bici trek downhill

The compiled test runs indicate that the 29er was 4 to 6% faster from top to bottom and there wasn’t a single section in which the 29er was slower. The testers and data report that the big wheels provide more traction, so braking can be done later, corner speeds can be higher and exit momentum greater.

Watch the screen. The 29er is the bigger of the two dots ripping the trail. A heat map indicates speeds. Red means slow, green means fast. You can see the extended slow sections for the 27.5 compared the 29er.

bici trek downhill

Dylan Howes on fork offset and handling

Additionally, Trek points out that the bottom bracket height of the 27.5 and 29 are the basically the same relative to the ground, but the bottom bracket drop between the two bikes is considerably different because of wheel size and axle height. This means the 29er rider sits lower in the bike and actually has more leverage and input when leaning the bike over in a corner. Combine the stability and traction with the body positioning on the bike and the 29er does it all better on paper and according to those who’ve ridden it.

Gee Atherton at the Fort William BDS prior to injury.

Jose Gonzalez on Tire Buzz

The Session 29’s wheelbase is less than a centimeter longer than the 27.5’s. This minute change allowed Trek to use the 27.5 carbon front end, only having to develop a 29er-specific rear triangle and swing link, keeping costs manageable for development and the consumer. During development, they took note that the rear wheel position in relation to rider position is in nearly the same place as on the 27.5. The modern bikes are longer and riders aren't hanging off the back like they may have in the past, so their experience with tire buzz is different than what a lot of internet users are speculating as a problem of the wheel size in a downhill application. They did note, however, that in hard-angled cornering, a rider may buzz their upper, inner thighs with the side of the tire because of the bigger wheel.

So who’s the Session 29er customer?

A hardcore racer who embraces the potential of the wheel size is who Trek expects to chomp at the bit for the Session 29. Park riders wanting to flick and whip will want to stick to the 27.5. Trek realizes that wheels and tires are still the weak point in the equation for publicly available 29er DH products and that’s why they’re offering only a frame, fork and rear shock package. Available in September/October of 2017, for a penny under five grand USD, the 29er DH experience can be yours. They believe early adopters of the technology will be serious enough about the bike to fill in any gaps required to get a race machine built and on the track.

Can 29ers be too fast? Jose Gonzalez discusses.

World Cup Racing and the Session 29

Unfortunately Gee Atherton’s injury at the BDS prevents him from racing at the Fort William World Cup in a couple days. We may see Trek World Racing athlete, Graeme Mudd, aboard the 29er, however. For now, Rachel Atherton is sticking to her 27.5 Session, but that may not be for long.

Downhill mountain biking: everything you need to know

From huge jumps to full-face helmets, downhill mountain biking is one of the most adrenaline-filled segments of the sport

Loic Bruni races at Fort William in 2019

Downhill mountain biking is one of the most striking segments of the sport. From images of riders hitting huge jumps and crazy rock gardens to the full-face helmets and long-sleeve attire, the cool image of downhill is what attracts a lot of people to mountain biking.

Downhill riding is both a type of riding as well as an elite racing discipline. The scene ranges from professionally built tracks at lift-served bike parks to local trails that are accessed from a shuttle road.

The type of riding is defined, as the name suggests, on riding downhill. The equipment used is not designed to be pedaled uphill, so downhill riders usually get to the top of the hill via chair lift at a ski resort or from a shuttle vehicle.

Downhill trails and tracks are designed to be as challenging as possible. They will be high speed and feature both natural and man-made features. Natural features may include rock gardens, root beds, and off-camber sections. Trail builders will add mandatory jumps and drops to keep technicality high and the adrenaline flowing.

The equipment

The best downhill mountain bikes are the most aggressive types available, designed to tackle the toughest terrain at high speeds. For this reason, they feature large amounts of suspension travel, usually around 200mm both in the front and rear. The rear shock is usually a coil shock, and the fork is always a double-crown fork, like the Fox 40 or RockShox BoXXer.

Geometry on these bikes will be low and slack. As different wheel sizes entered the mountain bike market, downhill bikes still commonly used 26-inch wheels. But as bike design got more refined, racers began to realize the benefits of bigger hoops. Today, downhill bikes are available in both 29er and 27.5-inch wheel sizes with some racers also opting for a mullet wheel size setup (29 front, 27.5 rear).

The components on downhill bikes are designed to be as durable as possible. The brakes will be powerful and feature large rotors. Tires use heavy thick casings to get the most protection from sharp rocks possible and use aggressive tread patterns. For super wet conditions, tire manufacturers also create ultra-specific mud tires for downhill racing. Shimano and SRAM both make downhill-specific groupsets, which have a narrow gearing range and use short caged derailleurs to avoid damage.

Downhill riders always use the best full-face mountain bike helmets for the most protection possible. Safety gear such as knee pads, elbow pads, back protectors, and even neck braces are also common pieces of safety equipment. Downhillers will often wear long-sleeve jerseys and pants. While downhill kits started out baggy, many racers are realizing the aerodynamic benefits of more tightly fitting clothes, even though super-tight skinsuits are infamously banned from UCI racecourses.

Downhill trails are built to be extremely steep, challenging and fast. You can expect lots of gaps, jumps, drops, technical corners, and of course rocks and roots.

One of the main places to find downhill tracks is at ski resorts as they already have the facilities for riders to take the chair lift to the top of the hill. These bike parks have trails rated for all skill levels, so nearly anybody can go and progress their riding abilities.

The most famous bike park is located in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. Trail builders in Whistler are considered the first to create the ski-resort bike park concept which has now spread across the world. A number of these bike parks, particularly the ones in Europe, are hosts to the Downhill World Cup race series. Most notably Les Get's, Leogang, Val de Sole, Fort William and Mont Saint Anne regularly host elite races and have been the stage for the best riders to compete against each other.

Downhill trails can also be found outside of designated parks. These however can be more challenging to access. If there is a road nearby, riders can use a vehicle to shuttle up to the top. Alternatively, riders can also hike up the hill since downhill bikes are not designed to be pedaled uphill.

Downhill trails are often very challenging, so it's always a good idea to take an easy lap down the trail to look at all the features before heading down at full speed.

Downhill mountain biking is one discipline of riding that's intrinsically related to racing. The most elite level of downhill racing is the UCI Downhill World Cup, which this year consists of four races in Europe and one in the United States. The concept is simple: the fastest person down the hill is the winner.

There is a winner for each race, but points are also accumulated over the series to crown an overall season winner. There is also a World Championships race, which is held separately from the rest of the World Cup season. The World Champion wears the rainbow stripes jersey for the next year, as in all cycling disciplines.

The current downhill World Champions are Reece Wilson and Camille Balanche, who were crowned last fall amid muddy conditions in Leogang, Austria. The 2021 World Cup season is about to start on 12  June, again at the Austrian venue. Of all the competitors, it will be South African Greg Minnaar who will look to add to his growing tally of wins. He currently holds the record for the most World Cup wins (23) and is considered one of the greatest downhill racers of all time.

Myriam Nicole is the top-ranked woman downhill racer currently. For years, Rachel Atherton was the woman to beat, but she is expecting a child so won't be racing this year. Young riders like Marine Cabirou, Nina Hoffmann, and Vali Holl will be looking to prove themselves on the podium.

For the men, Frenchmen Loic Bruni and Loris Vergier are nearly always on top of their game, but the field is deep with talent. Veteran racer Greg Minnaar proved last season that he still has race-winning talent. Another man from France, Amaury Pierron has won races in a dominating fashion in the past but is coming back from injury this year.

As with other race disciplines, there are amateur downhill races that anybody can enter held in locations all throughout the world. Most countries will have their own National series and Championship race which attract a mixture of professional and amateur racers.

How to ride downhill

The most obvious way to ride downhill is by going to a lift-served bike park, these bike parks usually have bikes and gear for rent and cater for all skill levels. Not everybody lives nearby a bike park though, which makes downhill a tricky discipline to get into.

The other option is using a shuttle vehicle or hiking to the top. Lots of areas have trails that are suitable for downhill riding, but the challenge is getting to the top.

Downhill bikes aren't great for climbing hills, and this is one reason why enduro mountain biking has become so popular. Enduro bikes combine great downhill suspension performance with a platform that's much easier to pedal up hills. Enduro bikes are very capable descenders, so they are great alternatives to downhill bikes.

You don't necessarily even need a downhill bike to ride downhill tracks. For example, the Enduro World Series race in Whistler uses some gnarly trails in the bike park, and the racers are setting fast times on enduro rigs.

With enduro bikes getting more and more capable, lots of riders are opting for the more versatile option. However, there are still downhill purists who can't give up the feeling of pure speed. In terms of descending capability, even the longest travel enduro bike will find it hard to compete with a downhill bike on a DH-specific trail. The uncompromised geometry, suspension systems and components make downhill bikes extremely stable and controlled on the roughest terrain

The Union rips into MTB downhill season on fresh custom Sessions

bici trek downhill

The fastest devo riders in the world need to look good

The Union is a group of some of the fastest rising downhill riders in the world. The team has been on a tear in 2024.

Lachie Stevens-McNab and Ellie Hulsebosch racked up a pair of junior New Zealand national titles, then ran it right back and took another double at Crankworx Rotorua. Most recently, Frida Rønning took home a big win on U.S. soil at Tennessee National. And Chris Hauser took second in Rotorua, and is champing at the bit to get going at Fort William after taking a junior World Cup win in Lenzerheide last year.

What more could you want from a tight-knit, crazy fast devo squad? How about looking fresh as hell? The team received custom Sessions as part of joining the Trek family for 2024 and beyond . Look out for them at the biggest races in the world — they’ll be easy to spot — and photos of the new rigs below.

Best downcountry mountain bikes of 2024 | Top-rated downcountry MTBs and buyer's guide

The top downcountry mountain bikes, tested and rated by our expert reviewers

Steve Behr / Immediate Media

Stan Portus

Imagine a bike that can tackle all-day epic rides with ease and efficiency, cover ground extremely fast and has just the right mix of componentry to fly down descents, and you're on your way to picturing the best downcountry mountain bikes.

Here, we list the best downcountry mountain bikes in 2024, as tested and rated by our expert reviewers at BikeRadar.

A relative newcomer to the mountain bike scene, downcountry bikes are growing quickly in popularity because they give you everything you need and nothing you don't.

Many of these bikes started life as race-ready cross-country mountain bikes, but they have been given some extra travel and a more progressive geometry, while retaining their XC speed.

Not all downcountry bikes are built the same, though. While some are more like beefed-up cross-country mountain bikes , others are closer to the best trail mountain bikes – pared-back and adrenaline-seeking.

We've put together a buyer's guide at the end of this article to help you choose the best downcountry bike for you and to help explain this new category of bike.

Best downcountry mountain bikes of 2024

Transition spur x01.

Pack shot of the Transition Spur X01 Carbon full suspension mountain bike

  • Great geometry
  • Smooth downhill, sprightly uphill
  • £6,000 / $6,499 / AU$10,499 as tested

Unlike some downcountry bikes, the full-carbon frame Transition Spur is neither a beefed-up XC machine or a pared-back trail bike. Instead, Transition started from the ground up to build a bike that, it claims, will cover ground quickly and fly down descents.

The Spur has 120mm of travel in both the front fork and the rear shock , and when it comes to descending it really shines a light on how capable a bike like this can be, staying composed with an innate ability to smooth out the trail despite its modest travel.

When climbing, the Spur is quick and efficient, surging forward as you step on the pedals, and staying firmly rooted on rough pitches.

Overall, Transition has created a bike with superb geometry, well-considered kit and a ride that would put many longer-travel bikes to shame.

Cotic FlareMAX GX AXS

MBK_413_biketest.MK_Cotic_010

  • Very capable downhill
  • Fast rolling and responsive

Designed for riding in the UK, the FlareMAX feels capable in most situations, leaning more to the side of ‘down’ in the downcountry equation.

Uphill, the FlareMAX offers tons of traction, accelerating efficiently when you stamp on the pedals. Featuring 125mm of rear travel, the FlareMAX has a ground-hugging feel that never makes it seem under-biked when pointed downhill.

The bike comes well specced with a 120mm RockShox SID fork up front, while Cane Creek's DBair IL takes care of the rear. It also features SRAM’s Eagle AXS drivetrain and G2 RSC brakes, making the bike weigh in at 13.9kg for a size large.

Juliana Wilder CC X01 AXS TR Reserve

Pack shot of the Juliana Wilder CC X01 AXS TR Reserve full suspension women's mountain bike

  • Super-light, responsive build
  • Impressively capable on the descents
  • £8,299 / $9,449 as tested

Weighing in at 10.5kg, it’s no surprise that this range-topping new downcountry build from Juliana is a mega climber.

By dropping the VPP linkage, the rear-suspension design has helped to shave 289g off the frame weight of the Blur – the Wilder’s Santa Cruz equivalent – yielding 115mm travel using the single-pivot linkage and flex-stays.

There’s more to this new downcountry rig than pure prowess uphill though: specced with 120mm travel up-front, the Wilder is surprisingly capable when it comes to tackling rougher ground and descents.

Specialized Epic EVO Expert

Best downcountry mountain bikes

  • Super-fast when you step on the pedals
  • Short-travel but incredibly capable
  • £6,750 / $6,300 / AU$10,100 / €6,699 as tested

The Specialized Epic EVO is a rocketship, reflective of its cross-country roots.

On climbs, the bike is sprightly and energetic and gives the feeling that everything you put into the pedals is translated into forward momentum. Slow up a little bit and the bike sits in the middle of its travel and feels more supportive than others.

When you point the Epic EVO downhill, it's surprisingly stable, delivering far beyond its 120mm of travel on rougher terrain, but getting the right line is important to really unlock the bike's potential.

For the price, one might expect a carbon bar rather than the alloy one Specialized has specced, and the brand's in-house tyres could be switched out for some extra bite.

Trek Top Fuel 8

Pack shot of the Trek Top Fuel 2022 full suspension mountain bike

  • Ideal suspension and geometry
  • Meaty but weighty frame
  • £3,850 / $3,830 / €4,099 / AU$5,300 as tested

The Trek Top Fuel 8 won't quite match its rivals on descents, but it's highly versatile, climbing and nullifying rugged surfaces with aplomb.

The modern geometry and gearing of the Shimano XT/SLX groupset allow you to scamper up sheer inclines, provided the Bontrager XR4 tyres retain purchase.

Downhill, the Top Fuel is agile and the RockShox SID fork is only outgunned on the most technical sections.

Unlike an XC bike, the Top Fuel should be forgiving enough to pootle along on all-day adventures.

YT Izzo Uncaged 7

YT Izzo Uncaged 7

  • Modern geometry
  • Impressive climbing ability
  • Good spec for the money
  • £6,299 / $6,499 / €6,299 as tested

The Izzo Uncaged 7 features the same frame as the rest of YTs Izzo range, but features 120mm of travel front and rear instead of the usual 130mm.

Being direct to customer, YT has provided a high spec for the money featuring SRAM's XX1 AXS groupset and G2 Ultimate brakes. A full carbon frame and the carbon DT Swiss XCR 1200 wheels make covering ground quick and easy.

Descending is at the core of the Izzo, though meatier tyres would allow it smash gnarlier trails.

Nukeproof Reactor Carbon 290 ST

Pack shot of the Nukeproof Reactor ST full suspension mountain bike

  • Downhill demon
  • Great spec for the price
  • £4,700 / $4,700 / AU$6,600 as tested

The Nukeproof Reactor ST is a really capable bike that comes with progressive geometry and a good riding position.

Considering the price point of the Reactor ST, the kit that is bolted to it is really impressive. There is a Fox Factory 34 fork, a Shimano XT 12-speed groupset, Maxxis rubber and carbon handlebar.

On descents, the Fox 34 feels well-controlled and the 125mm of travel in the rear can take some pretty big hits, creating a ride that is seriously fun.

The Reactor ST isn't energetic on climbs and locking the shock is advised to get a bit more efficiency on long drags. This means the Reactor ST isn't quite as rounded as other downcountry bikes, but when it comes to descending and value for money, it's hard to beat.

Scott Spark 900 Tuned AXS

Pack shot of the Scott Spark 900 Tuned AXS full suspension mountain bike

  • Lightning fast
  • Suspension eases over bumps
  • £8,199 as tested (international pricing TBC)

Even in its downcountry guise, with a 130mm-travel fork, the Scott Spark 900 Tuned AXS is suitably rapid. This is in part due to the Fox Nude 5T shock and fast-rolling Schwalbe Wicked Will tyres.

Thankfully, the Shimano XTR brakes can cool off that speed.

Although the Scott Spark whizzes up rock-strewn ascents, on leveller ground the suspension tends to absorb power from the pedals instead of propelling the bike forwards.

  • Read the full Scott Spark 900 Tuned AXS review

Scott Spark 910

MBK_413_biketest.MK_Scott Spark_10

  • Very fast, devours climbs
  • Clean hardware

Sharing its frame with the Spark RC cross-country race-bike, the Spark 910 is a fast mile-munching monster with top-of-the-class climbing ability.

The Fox Nude rear shock provides 120mm of travel and is hidden away in the seat tube, creating a clean-looking frame and protecting the shock from the elements. A 130mm Fox 34 fork supports the front end, and the bike is specced with Shimano's XT drivetrain and features a Syncros Fraser integrated bar and stem.

Unlike some downcountry bikes, the Spark is still very much 'country' focused, and is more at home at trail centres rather than gnarly backcountry descents.

Also consider…

This downcountry mountain bike scored fewer than four out of five stars in testing, but is still worth considering.

Cannondale Scalpel SE LTD Lefty

Pack shot of the Cannondale Scalpel SE LTD Lefty full suspension mountain bike

  • Incredibly comfortable
  • Agile and fun
  • £7,000 / $8,300 / €8,399 as tested

The Scalpel SE LTD Lefty shares the same carbon frame as Cannondale's XC Scalpel but has a longer stroke shock to increase the travel from 100mm to 120mm.

This cross-country DNA is apparent in the handling, with the Scalpel eager to get moving and climb. The bike doesn't feel quite as supportive or as bob-free as other downcountry bikes, but on long straight climbs, it can go along at a good pace.

The Scalpel really shines on meandering downhills. It slithers over roots and rocks with ease and is nimble on flowing trail park descents. But rougher terrain will reveal the limits of the Scalpel quicker than other similar bikes.

Having said this, if you're looking for a downcountry bike more at the XC end of the spectrum, the Scalpel is ready to eat up some big miles and comfortably cut through singletrack too.

First ride recommendations

These downcountry bikes have only been ridden by the BikeRadar testers a handful of times, so they haven't yet been given a full, rated review, but they are worth considering.

Yeti SB115 T1

Yeti SB115 pack shot.

  • Supple and supportive suspension
  • Super-solid chassis
  • £6,499 / $6,300 / €7,490 as tested

Adapted from Yeti's SB100 cross-country bike , the SB115 T1 is a solid bike that feels very planted through the chunder but efficient on the climbs.

The SB115 is graced with Fox Factory suspension that comes up trumps. High anti-squat figures keep the bike feeling stable on climbs.

On descents, it is soft enough to keep the rear wheel stuck to the ground and with enough mid-stroke support for some good pop. It also ramps up nicely for bigger hits, even though there is just 115mm of travel in the rear.

The geometry of the Yeti is fairly similar to the SB100, which contributes to its speed, but the reach is short and it could do with a bit more length to remain stable and less skittish on loose rocks and steep chutes.

Buyer’s guide to downcountry mountain bikes

Mountain biking often feels like a broad umbrella for many different disciplines; from trail to high-flying downhill, there are myriad riding styles and, of course, the bikes to match.

Downcountry bikes are one of the latest mountain biking phenomena, sitting at the intersection of cross-country, trail and all-mountain bikes.

Having existed in one form or another for a number of years, downcountry bikes have recently hit the mainstream. As demand for this type of bike began to balloon, the bike industry responded, and downcountry is now a burgeoning category.

Different brands approach downcountry bikes in slightly different ways, but this buyer’s guide will take you through everything you need to know.

What is a downcountry mountain bike?

Male cyclist riding the Transition Spur X01 Carbon full suspension mountain bike through woodland

In short, downcountry bikes are lightweight XC-style frames with added travel, trail-friendly geometry and wider, knobbly tyres.

The result? Bikes that will cover ground extremely fast but still enable you to charge down descents.

The term 'downcountry' was coined by Mike Levy at PinkBike three years ago, and is a mash-up of 'downhill' and 'cross-country'. So, a pretty neat encapsulation of what the bikes are for, and consequently a term that has stuck around.

The origin of downcountry bikes is a bit hazy. Some say it extends back to cross-country racing, where gnarlier courses demanded more technical, gravity-capable machines. Others say it comes from engineers making small tweaks to thoroughbred XC race bikes to make them more fun to ride.

Arguably, they could stem from manufacturers doing their market research and seeing consumers riding more extreme terrain on their cross-country bikes and making corresponding upgrades to existing bikes.

However they came to be, some of the biggest bikes brands now offer off-the-shelf downcountry bikes that deliver a refined balance of short travel, minimal mass and progressive geometry.

What to look for in a downcountry mountain bike

Alongside trail-friendly geometry, wide knobbly tyres and extended travel, downcountry bikes have a few other features that help them balance their fast and agile ride with their downhill performance and more relaxed feel.

Much of what makes a downcountry bike is what it is specced with, and here we run through the key things to look out for.

A lightweight frame with a relaxed geometry

Angle pack shot of the Transition Spur X01 Carbon full suspension mountain bike

Go back 10 years and tell a cross-country rider they’d one day be riding a bike with a 66-degree head tube angle and they’d probably look at you as if you’d had one too many caffeine gels. But now, this is exactly what is happening with downcountry bikes.

This angle is slacker than traditional cross-country bikes and helps give downcountry bikes their gravity-riding potential. This is because a slacker angle means the front fork sticks our further, creating a more stable ride at high speeds.

Reach figures have also increased as head angles have decreased. A longer reach number makes the bike feel more stable when you’re stood on the pedals descending.

Descending stability was going to be an inevitable outcome when combining the slack head angle, long reach and the consequential longer wheelbases created by those two figures.

Even though downcountry bikes have more gravity-friendly geometry, they remain relatively light so riders aren’t pushing too much mass, helping the bikes stay fast.

Short-travel

RockShox SID Ultimate rear shock on the Cannondale Scalpel SE LTD full suspension mountain bike

Although downcountry bikes have a short-travel design, they still offer a bit more travel than cross-country race machines to help them on more technical downhill sections.

As a general rule, downcountry bikes have between 120mm and 130mm travel in the forks and a variation of between 110mm and 125mm at the back, depending on brand and model.

Some downcountry bikes do offer more travel, but this is testament to how downcountry is a rather woolly category that is more about different factors coming together than travel defining what the bike is.

Large wheels and burly tyres

29in wheels are standard on downcountry bikes. Compared to 27.5in wheels, they require less effort to keep their momentum and are consequently more efficient, making them the right choice for the sorts of longer, more pedalling-intensive rides you’ll be doing on these bikes.

Downcountry bikes pair 29in wheels with wider and burlier tyres than you would expect to find on 29er cross-country bikes.

These mountain bike tyres sit between fast-rolling, lightweight XC tyres and chunkier downhill treads, making them fast and less of a drag when climbing, yet more durable and capable on the rough stuff.

Wide bars and short stems

Yeti carbon bars on a SB115.

Wide bars and short stems are the go-to for downcountry bikes.

The wide bars give you more leverage and help make downcountry bikes super-stable, agile and less skittish than bikes with more XC-focused components.

A shorter stem also improves handling. It gives the bike quicker handling characteristics by making steering more direct and makes the bike feel more responsive.

Dropper seatposts

Dropper posts are a common feature on downcountry bikes because they give riders a bit more space for moving around and shifting weight on technical descents.

It’s possible to raise the saddle for efficient pedalling and to make the most of downcountry bikes’ cross-country-style speed, combining the best of both worlds.

It might not be a surprise that downcountry bikes come with dropper posts considering their versatility, and dropper posts are even making their way onto gravel bikes .

Gearing on downcountry bikes is slanted towards the cross-country end of the spectrum. Front rings tend to have between 32 and 38 teeth compared to the 30- to 34-tooth rings on trail bikes.

This allows for more speed, which is always appreciated on the smoother trails and fire roads that a downcountry bike is at home bombing along, and for long days in the saddle.

Rear brake on the Cannondale Scalpel SE LTD full suspension mountain bike

When it comes to brakes on downcountry bikes there is a mix, but they tend to use two-pot rather than four-pot mountain bike disc brakes , where there are only two pistons rather than four.

This is because downcountry bikes don't need the braking power of four pistons because they aren’t descending at the fast, white-knuckle speeds of downhill mountain bikes .

Two pistons rather than four also saves weight, helping downcountry bikes achieve their svelte builds.

In keeping with this, downcountry bikes also tend to have a mix of rotor sizes; 180mm on the front for better braking and heat dispersion and 160mm on the rear, where braking isn’t so strenuous on the disc and a few grams can be saved.
