The History of Sicily and Malta

These two unique islands have long held the keys to the Mediterranean. Over centuries, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Arabs, Normans, Spanish and French imprinted their distinct history and architecture on the landscape of the islands, making the islands a perfect mix of cultures. From 1530 to 1798, Malta was ruled as a vassal state of Sicily by the Knights of St John. In the 19th century, Malta secured the Mediterranean for Britain and helped make it the world's major maritime power. Possession of Sicily brought similar benefits to Rome , as did Corsica for France.

Today, Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy, while Malta is one of the more recent independent members of the European Union. Today, however, their inhabitants still retain their own distinctive characteristics and ways of life. Each island visited has its own character, shaped by its history. Odyssey's small group educational tour compares and contrasts the culture, history, geography and peoples of these two unique islands.

Malta & Sicily Small group tour itinerary

Throughout our guided tour you'll experience a number of cultural and historical highlights, from archaeological sites to idyllic resort towns. Odyssey's small group tour of these Western Mediterranean islands is a magnificent holiday for those who wish to learn. Odyssey caters to mature travelers, whether couples or those journeying solo. The tour is fully escorted by an Odyssey Program Leader and a local guide who shares their expert knowledge of the history and culture of these wonderful islands.

On Malta, we make a walking tour of Malta's medieval history on a trip to the UNESCO World Heritage listed capital city, Valletta , where we visit the Grandmaster's Palace and St. John's Cathedral. We also visit the city of Rabat, where we visit the grotto of St. Paul. According to Christian tradition, St. Paul lived and preached in these catacombs during three months in Malta in 60 AD. Following Rabat, we head to the walled city of Mdina. Our trip to Malta also includes an excursion to Gozo , the second largest of the islands of Malta, where we visit the megalithic temples of Xaghra , an important prehistoric heritage site. We also make the time to take in Malta's beautiful sandy beaches, including a number of walks along the shore.

We then get the ferry to Sicily.

Our tour of Sicily begins with a walking tour of Noto , recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its grand baroque architecture. We then explore Siracusa (Syracuse), home to ancient Greek ruins and a well-preserved Roman amphitheater. For more ancient archaeological ruins, we then visit Agrigento , home to Greek temples. We also visit the Sicilian capital, Palermo , where we make a stop at the Arab-Norman Cappella Palatina (Palatine Chapel), before making a daytrip to the famous cathedral of Monreale. Finally, we travel to Trapani, where we stay in a hotel for two nights. The streets of this medieval town by the sea remain largely untouched from the period of Arab and Norman rule. From Trapani, we make a day trip to the island of Mozia for an archaeological tour, and then head to Marsala for a wine tasting of its famous drop.

Our tours aim to immerse you in local culture. Sicily and Malta are home to one of the world's richest food cultures, with subtle differences between the two cuisines. In order to experience the cuisine of both places, we always enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 1: Malta

Accommodation: La Falconeria or similar

We will host a welcome drinks in the hotel, where the tour leader will introduce the group and take any questions. After the meeting we will take a short evening walk to a local restaurant for dinner. (D)

Day 2: Malta

Accommodation: Waterfront Hotel or similar

In the morning we set off for a tour of the main sites around our hotel, commencing at Paola, home of the enigmatic Tarxien Temples. We will also visit Birzebugga, to visit the prehistoric Ghar Dalam cave. Next we will move on to the picturesque Marsaxlokk, famous for its market, to Marsakala where we stop to have lunch.

In the afternoon we transfer to Three Cities, where we have some free time to explore or perhaps take a cruise along the shore (not included, paid locally, approx. EUR 20 per person). We will transfer back to the hotel in the later afternoon. (B,L)

Day 3: Malta

Today’s activities centre around Valletta , the capital of Malta. We visit the Upper Barakka Gardens, the Grandmaster’s Palace, St. John’s Co-Cathedral, and the Museum of Archaeology. In the late afternoon we take in the ‘Malta Experience’, an audio-visual attraction set in a purpose-built auditorium overlooking Valletta’s magnificent Grand Harbour.

We return to our hotel for a short rest and later take an evening walk to a local restaurant for dinner. (B,D)

Day 4: Malta

This morning we begin our tour of Malta with a talk on its various islands and their history. We’ll learn about Malta’s natural and cultural heritage, strategic Mediterranean importance, centuries-old fortifications, settlements, and religious sites. Typical of the islands of the Mediterranean, Malta has played host to waves of several great civilisations including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, and the Spanish. The Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights of St John, were Malta’s Masters from 1530 to 1798, when Napoleon’s French forces invaded. Then, in 1800, the British assumed control until Malta was granted independence in 1964. The island and its people were awarded the George Cross for their bravery during World War II.

We then enjoy a full-day tour of local sites, starting with the ancient fortified city of Mdina where we enjoy a walking tour and stop to viire the Cathedral. We than continue to Ta’Qali craft village with some free time to shop for souvenirs. We visit Mosta to see the Mosta Rotunda, then travel to Rabat for lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon we explore St. Paul’s Church and Grotto, and St. Paul’s Catacombs, then make our way back to our hotel and the remainder of the day is at leisure. (B,L)

Day 5: Malta

This morning we’ll take a morning ferry ride across to Gozo , Malta’s second largest island, where we have a full day island tour. We visit the citadel at Victoria and the coastal village of Xlendi, which is still guarded over by a 17th century tower built by the Knights of St John. Following lunch, we will travel up the western coast of Gozo to visit Dwejra. Here we will take a boat ride to Fungus Rock, then on to the Ta Pinu basilica in Gharb, followed by a tour of the megalithic Ggantija Temples in Xaghra . In the evening we’ll return via ferry and coach to our hotel. We have dinner at our hotel this evening. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Syracuse, Sicily

Accommodation: Hotel Mercure Siracusa Prometeo or similar

This morning begins with an early morning ferry across to Pozzallo in Sicily . Here we join our coach and continue to the UNESCO world heritage town of Noto , the finest Baroque town in Sicily, home to sights like the San Francesco Church, Monastery of Santa Chiara and Palazzo Ducezio. We have free time for lunch, and continue on to Syracuse.

The remainder of the day in Syracuse is free to relax or explore on your own until we meet as a group again for dinner at the hotel. (B,D)

Day 7: Syracuse, Sicily

Today we enjoy a half day tour of Syracuse, where a visit to the Neapolis Archaeological Park will be followed by a trip to Ara di Ierone, the Great Altar of Syracuse, a monumental grand altar in the ancient quarter of Neapolis.

There will be some free time in the afternoon before we meet a local expert for a talk on the History and Culture of Sicily.

In the evening we attend a traditional “puppet theatre” (Opera dei Pupi – Sicilian marionette show) and then return to our hotel. (B)

Day 8: Agrigento, Sicily

Accommodation: Overnight at the Colloverde Park Hotel or similar

Today we depart to to Agrigento with a stop in Caltagirone along the way.

We spend some time exploring Caltagirone with our local guide where we view the Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte and visit the Museum of Ceramics. We will enjoy some free time for lunch and then we stop for a visit to Piazza Armerina and see its famous mosaics during our guided tour of the Villa Romana del Casale.

Later we transfer to our hotel and the evening is free to explore the town on your own. (B)

Day 9: Trapani, Sicily

Accommodation: Hotel Room of Andrea or similar

In the morning we tour Agrigento and visit the Valley of the Temples, one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture.

We then depart towards Trapani, with a stop in Segesta, an archaeological site outside Palermo, where we’ll take a guided tour to see the Doric Temple and ancient theatre.

We arrive in Trapani later in the afternoon and the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner this evening is at a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 10: Trapani, Sicily

This morning we’ll enjoy a walking tour of Trapani to view its main attractions, we’ll then transfer to San Leonardo for a ferry trip across to the island of Mozia. We’ll visit the main archaeological sites here, including the Whitaker Museum. We then return to San Leonardo for lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon we visit Marsala, home of the fortified wine that bears the town’s name, followed by a stop at Erice to take the funicular to the medieval eyrie of Erice, to enjoy its sweeping views of the valley and sea.

We then transfer back to our hotel for the evening. (B,L)

Day 11: Palermo, Sicily

Accommodation: Overnight at Hotel Frederico II or similar

This morning we transfer to Monreale, to visit its cloistered Cathedral followed by Palermo , Sicily’s capital where we overnight.

In Palermo we visit Quattro Canti, the “Theatre of the Sun”, and La Martorana, the city’s most famous medieval church, visit Palazzo dei Normanni and Cappella Palatina and then take a guided tour of Teatro Massimo, Palermo’s magnificent Opera House.

Dinner this evening is at our hotel. (B,D)

Day 12: Palermo, Sicily

The tour concludes this morning after breakfast. (B)

The trip was well organised and communication was also good. Busy tour giving full educational history. The Odyssey Program leader was absolutely wonderful, I felt very safe particularly as she had both French and Italian and if we were without the guide in the evenings, she was able to communicate with the other person. The Great Siege: Malta 1565

Suleiman the Magnificent, the most powerful ruler in the world, was determined to conquer Europe. Only one thing stood in his way: a dot of an island in the Mediterranean called Malta, occupied by the Knights of St. John, the cream of the warriors of the Holy Roman Empire. A clash of civilizations the likes of which had not been seen since Persia invaded Greece was shaping up. Determined to capture Malta and use its port to launch operations against Europe, Suleiman sent an armada and an overwhelming army. A few thousand defenders in Fort St. Elmo fought to the last man, enduring cruel hardships. When they captured the fort, the Turks took no prisoners and mutilated the defenders’ bodies. Grand Master La Vallette of the Knights reciprocated by decapitating his Turkish prisoners and using their heads to cannonade the enemy. Then the battle for Malta began in earnest: no quarter asked, none given.

The Knights of Malta

This is the most complete history in any language of the Order of St John, or Knights Hospitaller, successively known as the Knights of Rhodes and of Malta. Founded in eleventh-century Jerusalem, the Order has played an important military, religious and political role over succeeding centuries. H.J.A. Sire not only provides a full narrative account, but describes and illustrates the architectural and artistic legacy of the Knights, from Crusader castles in the Holy Land, to the medieval city of Rhodes, the Maltese capital of Valletta, and manors, churches and fortified villages throughout Europe. These, as well as religious art, portraiture and illuminated manuscripts are copiously illustrated, revealing the wealth, culture and longevity of the Order. Senior Voyage - Malta, maretia unei tari mici 2024 - Avion si Autocar local 8 zile

Intinerariu.

Îți spunem "Bine ai venit în Malta!". Planul este pe cât de simplu, pe atât de frumos. Ghidul nostru te va întâmpina și aventura va începe. Vom lua autocarul către hotelul nostru, un loc ales în așa fel încât să putem explora cu ușurință toată regiunea în zilele ce urmează. Drumul va fi unul presărat de legende, detalii interesante despre geografie, obiceiuri și multe povești despre cultura locală. Îmbinăm utilul cu plăcutul, așa că drumul va fi un moment numai bun să îți povestim despre tot ce urmează să facem în zilele ce ne așteaptă și să ne pui orice întrebări ai avea despre excursile opționale. Nu în ultimul rând, autocarul este un mediu numai bun să te cunoști cu ceilalți călători și să îți faci noi prieteni care să te însoțească în această călătorie de neuitat.

Hotel Topaz 3* se află în staţiunea Bugibba, la mai puţin de 10 minute de mers pe jos de plajă. Cu numeroase restaurante, baruri și cafenele, Bugibba este o stațiune populară printre turiști.

Restaurantul hotelului oferă preparate din bucătăria locală și italiană, atât în interior, cât şi pe terasă, iar la bar se pot savura diverse băuturi. Hotelul are piscină la interior şi în aer liber, precum şi o terasă mare cu şezlonguri. Internetul wireless este gratuit în toată proprietatea

Excursii gratuite

Ce modalitate mai bună să ne familiarizăm cu atmosfera de pe insulă decât să vizităm unul dintre cele mai actuale orașe ale Maltei: Sliema. Acest oraș exclusivist este supranumit și "Orașul Miliardarilor", datorită imobilelor scumpe achiziționate de cei din înalta clasă. În prezent, acest punct turistic este un loc prietenos, incredibil de liniștit. Clădirile elegante au rămas înșirate pe străduțele cochete, faleza este și ea înconjurată de bijuterii arhitecturale, iar plajele stâncoase reușesc să impresioneze pe oricine. Micile distracții se găsesc și ele la tot pasul, de la locuri special amenajate pentru înot, până la magazine, cafenele și restaurante, care mai de care mai îmbietoare. Avem puțin timp liber aici, așa că fiecare alege ce activitate îi este pe plac.

Valletta, capitala insulei: 60 €/ persoană

Dedicăm o zi întreagă unui loc special: Valletta - capitala Maltei. Locul este plin de atracții, orașul fiind împânzit de peste 300 de monumente, dintre care unele datează încă din Evul Mediu: de la bastioane și străduțe înguste, până la grădini și piațete fermecătoare. Cea mai bună descriere pentru Malta a fost dată chiar de UNESCO, atunci când a declarat capitala sit al Patrimoniului Mondial: "una dintre cele mai concentrate zone istorice din lume". Spațiul restrâns, pe o peninsulă îngustă, a oferit Vallettei șansa rară de a-și păstra arhitectura intactă, fiind ferită de expansiunea haotică tipică vremurilor moderne. Anul 2018 a fost un an de bun augur pentru Valletta, fiind momentul în care a fost declarată Capitală Europeană a Culturii, statut care a atras atenția publicului și a readus Vallettei gloria pe care o merita. Capitala poate fi explorată cel mai bine printr-un tur la pas, exact așa cum vom face și noi. Începem cu impresionanta clădire a Parlamentului și Opera Regală a Maltei, două dintre proiectele cele mai de seamă ale arhitectului Renzo Piano. Ne plimbăm apoi prin Grădinile Barrakka, un frumos spațiu public cu o istorie care se întinde din secolul al XVI-lea până în prezent. Urmează Piața St. George și Palatului Marelui Maestru. Încheiem turul cu o vizită la Catedrala Sf. Ioan, unde aflăm despre legătura fascinantă a orașului cu Ordinul Cavalerilor de Malta. Nu în ultimul rând, ne vom bucura de puțin timp liber, moment numai bun ca să absorbim atmosfera locală în ritmul propriu.

Senglea, Vittoriosa, Cospicua (Cele trei orașe): 50 €/ persoană

O excursie pentru a descoperi “cele trei orașe”: Senglea, Cospicua și Vittoriosa. Aceste orașe fortificate ne oferă o perspectivă unică asupra trecutului țării. Toate trei sunt bucăți de istorie vie, conservate cu grijă timp de sute de ani. Vittoriosa este cel mai vechi oraș dintre cele enumerate, existența sa datând încă din Evul Mediu timpuriu. Istoria ne spune că Senglea și Cospicua au fost fondate de Ordinul Cavalerilor de Sfântul Ioan în secolul al XVI-lea, respectiv în secolul al XVII-lea. Ne începem aventura pe străzile orașului fortificat Senglea, numit după Claude De La Sengle – Marele Maestru care a fondat orașul. Călătorim apoi către Vittoriosa și facem un pas înapoi în timp explorând orașul plin de biserici antice, palate și case nobile. În cele din urmă, ne îndreptăm către Cospicua, unde ne vom plimba pe străduțe și afla mai multe despre trecutul tumultos al Maltei.

Mdina, Rabat și Domul din Mosta: 65 €/ persoană

Ziua de azi începe cu o vizită în orașul fortificat Mdina. Misteriosul oraș este înconjurat de zidurile care încununează o colină și separă Mdina de Malta modernă. Zidurile de piatră aurie înconjoară o lume cu străduțe înguste și piațete cu atmosferă arăbească, case mărețe și mânăstiri pline de legendă. Restaurantele cu tradiție se găsesc la tot pasul, fiecare fiind un popas potrivit pentru un prânz de neuitat. Punctul culminant al vizitei noastre în Mdina: Sf. Paul, una dintre cele mai frumoase catedrale ale Maltei.

Următorul loc care ne va încânta este Rabat, situat chiar în afara fortificațiilor Mdinei. Aici descoperim o impresionantă vilă romană excavată, o serie de cripte antice și catacombe creștine. Catacombele St. Paul sunt un complex subteran, situat chiar la marginea orașului Rabat. Asocierea cu Sfântul Paul vine de la mitul conform căruia aceste catacombe ar fi fost la un moment dat conectate direct la Grota Sfântului Paul. Se crede că această peșteră ar fi fost chiar locul unde Sfântul Paul și misionarii săi au căutat adăpost după ce au naufragiat pe insula Malta. În ziua de astăzi, peștera este considerată leagănul religiei creștine din Malta, fiind locul în care Sfântul Paul a predicat și a răspândit Evanghelia.

Ultima oprire a zilei este Domul din Mosta. Impresionantă din punct de vedere arhitectural, cu un interior în nuanțe de albastru, auriu și alb, bazilica este, de asemenea, un simbol al intervenției divine. Cea mai impresionantă priveliște va fi o replică a unei bombe germane care a căzut prin dom în 1942, când peste 300 de credincioși așteptau să audă Sfânta Liturghie. În mod miraculos, aceasta nu a explodat. Replica bombei este plasată lângă altar și ne oferă o imagine impresionantă a unui dezastru care nu s-a mai întâmplat.

Grota Albastră, Templul Hagar Qim și Marsaxlokk: 65 €/ persoană

După micul dejun îți propunem o altă excursie opțională de o zi, în cadrul căreia vom explora cele mai cunoscute atracții din partea de sud a insulei. Vom vizita Templul Megalitic Hagar Qim, obiectiv maltez inclus în lista Patrimoniului Mondial UNESCO. Complexul este unul dintre cele mai vechi din lume, depășind cu aproape 1000 de ani anticele Piramide din Giza și explorarea lui este o experiență memorabilă.

Ne continuăm turul cu o vizită la Grota Albastră, a cărei ape luminează de un albastru fosforescent datorită florei și faunei subacvatice. Facem o plimbare cu barca (extracost), pe sub arcada înaltă de 42 metri și pătrundem în Grota Albastră pentru a ne lăsa fermecați de fabulosul joc de lumini naturale.

Ultima oprire a zilei va fi în tradiționalul port pescăresc Marsaxlokk, care se bucură de o istorie veche de două milenii și de o atmosferă cu totul aparte. Ne lăsăm încântați de culorile bărcilor luzzu, vopsite în nuanțe vibrante de galben, albastru, roșu sau verde, pete de culoare ce plutesc ușor pe mare și înveselesc întreaga priveliște tipic pescărească. Pe malul apei, se găsesc o serie de restaurante cu specific pescăresc unde putem servi preparate din fructe de mare proaspete și ne putem bucura de priveliștea liniștitoare.

Insula Gozo: 75 €/ persoană

Astăzi explorăm o altă insulă din arhipelagul Maltez, insula Gozo, loc înțesat de legende, situri arheologice, forturi medievale, sate pitorești și priveliști spectaculoase. Insula era considerată în antichitate drept patria legendară a nimfei Calypso. Luăm feribotului din portul Cirkewwa și ne bucurăm de briza mării în timp ce călătorim spre Gozo. Pe drum admirăm de la distanță mica insulă Comino, celebră datorită filmelor pentru care a fost platou de filmare: Troia și Contele de Montecristo. După aproximativ jumătate de oră debarcăm în Gozo. Ne așteaptă Victoria, capitala insulei, unde vizităm Citadella și facem un tur pietonal prin centrul orașului. Apoi ne îndreptăm spre biserica Ta' Pinu, un loc al vindecărilor miraculoase, unde admirăm icoana făcătoare de minuni a Maicii Domnului. Insula se mai mândrește și cu unul dintre cele mai bine conservate temple preistorice din arhipelag, Templul Ggantja, care este următorul nostru popas. Acest sit constă în două temple așezate unul lângă altul, construite între 5600 și 5200 î.Hr. Stâncile din care sunt construite sunt atât de mari, încât locuitorii din Gozo credeau că templele au fost construite de giganți. Încheiem turul în golful Dwejra, fosta locație a celebrei Ferestre de Azur, un arc de stâncă deasupra mării, prăbușit în anul 2017. În ciuda prăbușirii, peisajele au rămas la fel de spectaculoase, cu formațiuni stâncoase atât de dramatice încât au fost folosite ca locație pentru faimosul serial Urzeala Tronurilor.

Recent tour reviews, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers. 

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over. 

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website. 

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport. 

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you. 

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you. 

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you. 

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information. 

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you. 

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

The Maltese Islands are a heady mix of sunny days, turquoise waters, dramatic coastline and amazing historical sites. If you are a Game of Thrones fan then there’s the added bonus of some instantly recognizable filming locations across the islands.

We loved our time spent exploring Malta and, to help with your Malta planning, we’ve put together our ultimate Malta itinerary: it’s our guide to exploring the Maltese islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino and includes things to do, where to stay and what to see along the way. Malta Itinerary: The Essentials

Located in the Mediterranean, Malta is comprised of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. Malta and Gozo are the main tourist islands while Comino is known for the crystal clear waters of its Blue Lagoon which are a popular day trip from the islands.

How long to spend in Malta

The Maltese islands are small and easy to navigate so even 3 days in Malta will allow you to see many of the main sights on Malta and Gozo. 4 to 7 days will allow you to check out all the sights, spend some time relaxing and take day trips to Gozo and Camino if you wish.

Best time to visit Malta

Malta is a beautiful destination year-round and we have loved our summer and winter visits to the islands.

• Summer: the summer months in Malta typically see long, dry and sunny days. Temperatures can reach 30°C during June, July and August and this is when the islands are at their most crowded. Early June is one of the best times to visit.
• Autumn/Winter: September and October are typically beautiful in Malta with temperatures reaching the mid 20°Cs although it can rain more frequently in October. Late Autumn and December can still see temperatures reaching highs of 15°C – we’ve visited Malta in early December and the weather was pleasant if a little gloomy and wet on occasion!
• Spring: the rainy days lessen in April and May and the temperatures climb towards the low 20°Cs. May is another excellent month on the Maltese islands.

Malta itinerary tip: we prefer to avoid the peak summer months as we like to sightsee and explore the islands but the higher crowds mean higher hotel prices and more traffic. If you are seeking sun and sightseeing then summer is still an excellent choice.

Rental cars and public transport are both great options for exploring Malta.

Renting a Car in Malta

Renting a car in Malta is one of the best ways to see as much as possible. Malta rentals can be relatively cheap and a small car is easier. We rented a car during our time in Malta and it allowed us to see everything on the island, including trips to Gozo and Comino. Public Transport

Hop-on Hop-off bus tour : The Hop-on Hop-off bus tour is a great way to explore the island of Malta and stops at most of the tourist sights we mention – check prices here!

Bus: There is a good bus system in Malta and Gozo. It covers most of the tourist sites and is inexpensive. 

Ferry: There are also ferries between Valletta and Sliema and Valletta and the Three Cities, as well as from Malta to the islands of Gozo and Comino.

Where to stay in Malta

The great thing about Malta is that it is relatively compact and easy to get around – in fact, you can base yourself in one hotel for your entire stay and still check out the sights across the three islands. The bustling seaside town of Sliema or nearby St Julian’s are our favourite locations, closely followed by Valletta and St Paul’s Bay.

We’ve included all our favorite sights across the Maltese Islands and have provided suggested itineraries for 6 individual days taking in Malta, Comino and Gozo.

Malta Itinerary tip: pick and choose from our daily itineraries and individual sights as you please depending on how long you have and what you want to see. We consider the first four days as a highlight of Malta’s must see sights so focus on these if you have limited time.

Malta Daily Itinerary

Our recommended day by day Malta itinerary:

Day 1 | Valletta and the Three Cities

Our Day 1 itinerary includes Malta’s capital, Valletta, and the Three Cities, the fortified historic cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua.

Founded in 1566, Valletta is Malta’s capital city and boasts an array of historical sights and a strong Baroque presence. The fortified city is surrounded by city walls and is sandwiched between Grand Harbour and Marsmxett Harbour. It is one of the 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Malta and, despite its small size (it’s one of the smallest capital cities in Europe), Valletta is packed with things to see and do.

There are two excellent tours in Valletta for exploring the city:

• Walking tour: this walking tour is one of the most popular walking tours in Valetta and includes all the major sights in the city – check prices now!

The entrance to Valletta is marked by the City Gate. The current gate was built in 2014 and is the fifth to stand at the entrance to the city. It’s lovely to wander through its historic and picturesque streets – the main street, Strait Street, is renowned for its Italian restaurants.

One of Valletta’s highlights is St John’s Co-Cathedral which houses two pieces of art by Caravaggio and his piece, the Beheading of St John the Baptist is often described as one of his most extraordinary works.

For the best views, check out the stunning Barrakka Gardens. The Upper Gardens overlook the Saluting Battery where a daily reenactment of the gun firing takes place at 12pm and 4pm.

For those interested in Malta’s history, the National War Museum at Fort St Elmo is a must-visit as are the Lascaris War Rooms.

The Three Cities

Directly across from Valletta are the cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua which make up the Three Cities of Malta. They were the first fortified cities built by the Knights of St John when they arrived in Malta in 1530. The three cities neighbour each other and it’s wonderful to stroll around enjoying the serenity and history which exudes from every street and building.

On the east side of the Grand Harbour, Fort Ricasoli doubled as the Gate of the Gods of King’s Landing and featured when the Starks reached King’s Landing.

The 18th Century Fort Manoel is located on Manoel Island and doubles as the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor. It was here that Ned Stark was executed.

Fort Saint Angelo, at the centre of the Grand Harbour, was the location for the Red Keep Prison and the Underground Chambers. It is where Arya chased the cat into the dungeons and where Ned Stark was imprisoned before his death.

Day 2 | Mdina and Rabat

Day 2 takes in the ancient walled city of Mdina and the nearby town of Rabat.

Mdina, known as ‘the Silent City’, is one of Europe’s best-preserved ancient walled cities and was once the capital of Malta. The fortified city sits atop a hill and commands views for miles around. With its narrow streets and well-preserved architecture, visitors are instantly transported back centuries upon crossing through its commanding gate.

The ancient city has over 4,000 years of history and is believed to have housed the Apostle, St Paul, when he was shipwrecked on Malta.

Mdina has some beautiful sights. As well as its magnificent entrance gate, the Gate of Mdina, its streets are lined with historic buildings in a mix of medieval and baroque architecture and one of the highlights is wandering through the city streets.

Built in the 17th Century the Baroque style St Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most popular sights in Mdina. Its ceiling is adorned with paintings of the shipwreck of St Paul and its twin bell towers are visible across Mdina. The Church of the Annunciation of Our Lady is another beautiful Baroque Chuch worth a visit. For history fans, there is also the Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, the Mdina Dungeons and the Knights of Malta.

Make sure to pay a visit to the Fontanella Tea Gardens and admire the views from the second-floor terrace while indulging in a sweet treat. The Tea Gardens are located right on the city walls and the homemade food is delicious. It’s one of the most popular stops in Mdina and is especially beautiful at sunset.

Mdina in Game of Thrones

Some prominent Game of Thrones scenes were filmed in Mdina. It was at the entrance to Mdina where Catelyn Stark and Ser Rodrik Cassel rode into King’s Landing to try and establish what led to Bran’s fall. This is also where Ned later says goodbye to Catelyn as she sets off from King’s Landing.

Mesquita Square was the location where Jamie Lannister and his spearmen attack Ned and his guards in Season 1, Episode 5 ‘The Wolf and the Lion’. You can also find the entrance and balcony to Little Finger’s brothel as well as the Street of Steel.

Just 10 minutes east of Mdina, in the town of Attard, the San Anton Palace and Gardens made frequent appearances throughout Season 1 of Game of Thrones where it doubles as part of the Red Keep exterior. The palace is the official residence of the President of Malta and is not open to the public but you can still see some of the filming locations and the gardens themselves are beautiful.

One of the most memorable scenes from San Anton is when Joffrey took Sansa to the balcony to see the heads on spikes – her father, Ned Stark’s included.

Rabat is located just outside Mdina and is a suburb of Mdina.

Howard Gardens, which separate Mdina and Rabat, are nice for a stroll. St Paul’s and St Agatha’s Catacombs date back to the 4th Century. At the time Roman law prohibited burials within Mdina and St Paul’s is said to represent the earliest Christianity in Malta.

Other noteworthy stops include Domus Romana, a townhouse from the Roman period which boasts some of the oldest mosaic compositions from the western Mediterranean (it’s ranked alongside Pompeii and Sicily), Casa Bernard, a 16th Century palazzo that offers guided tours and St Paul’s Church, a shrine to the Apostle St Paul.

St Dominic’s Convent in Rabat doubled as the Red Keep Garden. The water feature in the convent gardens is the location of the scene where Ned Stark confronts Cersei about Jamie being the father of her children. It is here that Cersei declared ‘When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.’

Malta itinerary tip: St Dominic’s Convent is a quiet convent and not a tourist site. Opening hours vary so it can be hit and miss if you manage to gain access.

Day 3 | Island of Gozo: Day Trip

Day 3 of our itinerary is a day trip to the Maltese island of Gozo. Gozo is Malta’s charming sister island and it is a short ferry ride between the two islands. For a tiny island, there is a surprising variety of fun and interesting things to do in Gozo .

If you are travelling independently, there are two ferry routes between the islands of Malta and Gozo

• Valletta and Gozo (passenger ferry): travel between Mgarr in Gozo and the Grand Harbour in Valletta in less than 45 minutes with Gozo Fast Ferry. 10 ferries depart Malta daily from 6am to 8pm and return from Gozo between 7am and 9pm
• Cirkewwa and Gozo (car and passenger ferry): there are frequent departures from Cirkewwa, on the North of Malta and Mgarr in Gozo

Malta itinerary tip: we take our rental car over to Gozo so use the Cirkewwa to Gozo ferry. Note, if you are brining a car you only pay your fare on the return journey – this confused me the first time we crossed, I thought I had left the ferry without paying for our ticket! If you are planning to travel by bus around Gozo then the Valleta ferry is a great option if you are staying in Valleta or on a bus route to the city.

Things to do in Gozo

Victoria, or Rabat as it’s known to locals, is the capital and the heart of Gozo. The Citadel, which dates back to the Middle Ages, is its main attraction and the fortress is visible from all over Gozo. 

Gozo was first settled around 5,550 BC and one of its impressive prehistoric sights is the Temples of Ggantija. Two megalithic Temples in the Ggantija Temple Complex are described as the oldest free-standing monuments on earth. Together with five temples on the island of Malta, the Temples of Ggantija were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although Gozo’s most famous landmark, the Azure Window, collapsed in 2017, Dwerja Bay is still worth a visit. The Bay is home to spectacular sights including Fungus Rock, the Dwejra Tower, the Inland Sea and the Blue Hole.

The Wied il-Mielah Sea Arch is a beautiful sea arch if you are seeking an alternative to the Azure Window.

Other sights on Gozo that are worth visiting include Wied l-Għasri, the Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu Basilica and the Ta’ Kola Windmill in Xaghra.

Malta itinerary tip: the Popeye Village is located en route to the ferry in Cirkewwa at the North of the Island. It was the movie set for the 1980’s Popeye Musical and is now a fun village with mini golf, giant board games, a small playground, and some set props to explore. Even if you don’t visit, make sure to stop and admire the picturesque village from above.

Gozo in Game of Thrones

The now collapsed Azure Window in Gozo was the backdrop for the scenes of the Dothraki wedding feast between Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen on the coast of Pentos in Season 1. It’s still easily possible to visualise the scenes from the wedding even in its absence.

Day 4 | Island of Comino and Blue Lagoon: Day Trip

Located to the west of the smallest of the Maltese Islands, Comino, the Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular day trips for visitors to Malta.

The Blue Lagoon

The postcard-perfect Malta attraction is a small lagoon with shallow turquoise waters and is sheltered by jagged cliffs and rock formations.

If you want to explore a little of Comino while you are there then take a walk (30 to 40 minutes) to St Mary’s Tower, a watchtower built in 1618. Santa Marija Bay (25 minutes) is a sandy beach with a shallow bay and is a nice retreat from the Blue Lagoon.

How to get to the Blue Lagoon from Malta

Most visitors to Malta join a tour to the Blue Lagoon. This Bluestar tour is our favourite as they are one of the first ferries to arrive at the Lagoon. As well as a 4.5 hour stop at the Blue Lagoon (with a 10-meter slide to have fun entering the lagoon from the boat!) the boat takes a scenic route past some of the best sights, including Gozo Harbour, en route – check prices here!

If you want to travel independently then Comino Ferries operate a round trip service between Marfa and Cirkewwa in Malta and the Blue Lagoon, Comino on a daily basis. The trip takes approximately 25 minutes to Comino and 35 minutes to return.

Day 5 | South Malta: UNESCOs and Marsaxlokk

Day 5 comprises the UNESCO listed Megalithic Temples of Malta and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum along with the fishing village of Marsaxlokk.

Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and Tarxien Temples, Tarxien

As well as its capital city Valletta, Malta is home to 2 other UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Megalithic Temples of Malta and the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum. The two sites are located close to each other in the town of Tarxien.

The Tarxien Temples date back to 3,150 BC and are one of seven prehistoric temples found between the islands of Malta and Gozo on the UNESCO World Heritage listing. The site is small and outdoors and gives an incredible insight into ancient life.

The prehistoric underground burial site of Hal Saflieini is one of the most fascinating sites we visited in Malta and is only accessible through a guided tour. The complex consists of interconnecting rock-cut chambers over three levels and the earliest remains date back to 4BC. The burial sites are on the top level while the middle level features red ochre wall paintings and the Lower Level is known as the ‘Holy of Holies’

Chinese Gardens, Santa Lucija

If you want to stretch your legs, the Chinese Garden of Serenity, a gift to the Maltese people from China, is a nice stop near Tarxien. The gardens, made up of several small areas, are peaceful and beautiful and have water features, pagodas, rocks and a pond.

The charming and picturesque fishing village of Marsaloxx is the largest fishing village in Malta and it’s a lovely spot to spend a few hours. As one would expect, its fish restaurants are among the best on the island making it a great lunch or dinner stop. Marsaloxx harbour is filled with colourful boats known as the Maltese Luzzu, a traditional Maltese fishing boat with a pair of eyes to symbolise protection painted on the bow.

The nearby St Peter’s Pool is a lovely natural swimming pool located along the coast. You can take a short boat ride from Masaxlokk or walk/drive.

Day 6 | West Malta: Dingli, Blue Grotto and Temples

Day 6 focuses on the West of the island with stops at the Blue Grotto, Dingli Cliffs and the ancient temples of Mnajdra and Haġar Qim.

The Blue Grotto is a series of 9 sea caves and a sea arch that are only accessible by boat from Wied iz-Zurrieq. In the morning the blue sky reflects the seabed turning the water in the caves a wonderful cobalt blue.

Malta itinerary tip: there are some viewpoints above the Blue Grotto but a morning boat trip is the best way experience its true beauty.

Mnajdra and Haġar Qim Temples

Considered unique architectural masterpieces given the limited resources available to their builders, the temples of Mnajdra and Haġar Qim are among the seven temples included on the Megalithic Temples of Malta Unesco World Heritage listing.

Dingli Cliffs

The Dingli Cliffs are 15 minutes west of Rabat and, at 253 metres above sea level, they are the highest point on the island. A church dedicated to St Mary Magdalene is perched on the edge of the cliffs and the views over the Mediterranean Sea are wonderful.

Malta Itinerary tip: Dingli Cliffs are only worth the detour if you have a rental car. Buses are quite infreuqent and there’s not a lot to do outside of a walk/scenic drive.

West Malta: Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones fans should make a stop at the Verdala Palace while driving between Rabat and Dingli. The palace serves as the exterior of Illyrio Mopatis’s mansion in Pentos and it is where Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen meet Khal Drogo before the wedding. The palace is the official summer residence of the President of Malta and is closed to the public.

Head north from Dingli towards Mthaleb – take care as the road is narrow and winding. The cliffs at Mthaleb appeared in some Dothraki camp scenes towards the end of Season 1. It was along the cliffs that Khal Drogo collapsed and it is also here that Daenerys emerged from the flames with her baby dragons.

Ne indreptam spre cartierul nostru general din Figueira da Foz, stațiune populara printre turiștii portughezi de peste un secol, in prezent devenita populara și printre turiști din alte țari, la un complex hotelier cu plaja proprie. Plaja generoasa și cazino-ul de aici sunt completate de cafenele și magazine pline de farmec local, indiferent de sezon. Dupa ce te-ai instalat, te invitam sa faci cunoștința cu ghidul care va prezenta programul zilelor urmatoare. Dupa aceasta intalnire ai ocazia sa iți faci propria lista de preferințe cu excursiile opționale daca nu ai facut-o inca. Pentru o mai buna planificare a programului turistic, recomandam rezervarea excursiilor opționale din țara.

Localizare Hotelul se bucura de o locație excelenta in Figueira da Foz, la 500 m departare de Fortul Santa Catarina și 280 m de Cazinoul Figueira. Plaja Claridade se afla la 200 m departare fața de hotel, astfel ca turiștii se pot bucura oricand de o baie in mare. Atracțiile principale din Figueira da Foz sunt plaja generoasa și cazino-ul, completate de restaurante, cafenele și magazine de suveniruri pline de farmec local, indiferent de sezon.

Excursii gratuite

Tur panoramic de Lisabona Luam un prim contact cu Lisabona printr-un tur paronamic prin care descoperim Podul Vasco da Gama și Parcul Natiunilor, construit cu prilejul expozitiei mondiale din 1998, parc ı̂n care se află Gara Oriente, Ocenariu, Pavilionul Cunoasterii, Pavilionul Portugaliei, Turnul Vasco da Gama și telecabinele care merg de-a lungul fluviului Tajo. Atmosfera locului este de poveste, iar străzile pitorești animate de o forfotă pașnică. Lisabona are foarte multe de oferit. Nu o spunem doar noi, ci și sutele de mii de vizitatori care o viziteaza ı̂n fiecare an. Deci, facem așa cum trebuie și promitem să revenim in excursia opționala de o zi dedicata capitalei. Turul panoramic se va realiza fie in prima zi de program, in drum de la aeroport spre hotel sau in ultima zi, inainte de transferul la aeroport.

Excursii opționale

Aveiro și Coimbra: 55 EUR/ persoana Aveiro, unul dintre cele mai frumoase orașe ale Portugaliei este adesea supranumit “Venetia portugheza”, datorita ambarcațiunilor tradiționale ale orașului pictate in culori vii, care seamana cu gondolele (moliceiros), a podurilor arcuite și a rețelei de canale pitorești. Primul lucru pe care il putem face este sa urcam la bordul unui moliciero (extracost), pentru un tur relaxat pe canale. Ne vom petrece restul timpului explorand centrul vechi, incercand mancarea tipic portugheza intr-unul dintre numeroasele restaurante de langa piața de pește și degustand dulciurile tradiționale ale orașului – ovos moles, deliciu inventat de calugarițele din cetate in urma cu secole. Urmand coasta Atlanticului, la 13 km descoperim frumoasa stațiune Costa Nova, faimoasa pentru casele traditionale (palheiros) vopsite in dungi verticale si orizontale viu colorate. Apoi ne indreptam spre Coimbra, prima capitala a Regatului Portugaliei in perioada Evului Mediu si gazda celei mai vechi universitati din lume. Cladirea Universitații domina orizontul, iar alte cladiri monumentale stau marturie moștenirii regale a orașului. Facem o vizita in complexul universitar ridicat in secolele XVI-XVII, dupa care ne bucuram de un tur al orașului vechi. Vom intalni studenți la fiecare pas pe strazile inguste, tineri imbracați in pelerine negre, in timp ce atmosfera este intregita de muzica fado, cantata de muzicieni stradali, oferindu-ne bucuria unui concert gratuit.

Porto: 60 EUR/ persoana Doar gandul la faima vinului de Porto ar fi de ajuns sa sarim din pat și sa ne pregatim cum se cuvine pentru acasta excursie. Un oraș eminamente romantic, așezat pe malurile raului Douro și al doilea ca marime din Portugalia, Porto este o destinație indragita atat de catre iubitorii de vinuri alese, de gurmanzi, de cupluri indragostite, de celebritați din toata lumea. La sosire, vom face un tur la pas prin hațișul de alei intortocheate, scari incrucișate, biserici baroce și poduri maiestuoase. Vom explora centrul orașului, poposind la punctele arhitecturale emblematice: Palacio da Bolsa, Avenida dos Aliados, Turnul Clerigos și Libraria Lello, cea care a inspirat-o pe celebra autoare a carților Harry Potter. Apoi intram in cartierul Ribeira, patrimoniu UNESCO, un loc care ne va cuceri inimile pe veci cu labirintul sau de straduțe in zig-zag, care se intinde pana la raul Douro. Avem ocazia de a experimenta o croaziera pe rau (extracost) și admira indragitele rabelos – barcile tradiționale utilizate pentru transportul butoaielor de vin Porto dinspre podgoriile din Valea Douro pana la cramele vechi de secole din port. La final, ce putem face mai bine dacat sa savuram faimosul vin de Porto, la o crama din Vila Nova de Gaia?

Lisabona: 65 EUR/ persoana Dedicam acesta zi capitalei Portugaliei. Un tablou unic de arhitectura uluitoare, restaurante excelente și accesibile, strazi laturalnice pitorești și aerul sarat al Atlanticului – vei avea sentimentul limpede ca te afli pe marginea Europei. Lisabona este considerat orașul celor șapte coline, insa monumentul de pe varful cel mai vizibil este fara nicio indoiala Castelo Sao Jorge. Principalele districte de interes pentru vizitatori sunt centrul Baixei, Chiado, Bairro Alto și Alfama. Catre vest se intinde Belem-ul, un loc care nu trebuie ratat și punctul de start al turului nostru. Vizitam Turnul Belem, emblematica structura fortificata proiectata inițial ca far, cu rol important in descoperirile geografice ale portughezilor pe mare. In apropiere oprim la vasta și spectaculoasa Manastire Jeronimos, construita pentru a comemora intoarcerea lui Vasco de Gama din India și inclusa pe lista UNESCO. Dupa atata explorare, ne rasfațam cu o porție delicioasa de Pasteis de Belem, faimos desert portughez, intr-o cofetarie celebra.

Dupa momentul dulce, continuam vizita cu un tur panoramic care ne da ocazia sa bifam cateva repere arhitecturale și istorice de seama: Biserica Estrela, Piata Marques de Pombal, Bulevardul Liberdade si Piata Restaurarii Independentei. Timp liber la dispoziție pentru a explora in continuare cartierele fermecatoare ale orașului, restaurantele tradiționale sau bulevardele cu multe magazine. De neratat este colina Alfama, in care pierzi orice simț al direcției și patrunzi literalmente in sufletul orașului. Evident, nu poți spune ca ai fost in Lisabona daca n-ai urcat sau macar fotografiat cu unul dintre faimoasele tramvaie galbene, emblematice pentru capitala. Tramvaiul 28 care urca prin cartierul Alfama este o atracție musai de bifat de fiecare vizitator al orașului.

Obidos și Manastirea Batalha: 55 EUR/ persoana Azi ne propunem sa vedem Obidos, descris adesea drept cel mai romantic sat medieval din Portugalia, una dintre cele sapte minuni ale Portugaliei, supranumit și Orasul Reginelor. Inconjurat de ziduri cu creneluri impresionane, in mijlocul orașului se inalța palatul regal construit de mauri. Obidos ne aminteste de singura regina portugheza care a fost sanctificata. Exploram centrul vechi, palatul regal și obiectivele turistice de top ale orașului. Intram intr-o biserica istorica ce a renascut ca librarie moderna și facem o pauza pentru a degustara lichiorul traditional Ginjinha, servit in pahare de ciocolata și alte bunatati locale. Dupa-amiaza plecam spre Manastirea Batalha, parte a Patrimoniului Mondial UNESCO, una dintre cele mai de seama comori naționale ale Portugaliei și printre cele mai reprezentative obiective arhitecturale in stil gotic din Peninsula Iberica. Manastirea are o anumita magie cu ornamentele sale complexe, manueline și structura acoperișului nefinalizata, a Capelei sugestiv denumita Imperfeitas. Aceasta reușește sa uimeasca anual mii de turiști care vin in pelerinaj la Batalha.

Tomar și Fatima: 55 EUR/ persoana Tomar este unul dintre cele mai pline de farmec orașele din Portugalia, care cucerește de la prima vedere. Insa ceea ce face ca Tomar sa fie cu adevarat extraordinar este Manastirea Ordinul lui Hristos, ansamblu arhitectural monahal cu totul aparte, care a fost la origine o fortareata a ordinului Templierilor in secolul al XII-lea. Misteriosul ordin al templierilor deținea o putere enorma in Portugalia secolelor XII-XVI și a finanțat expedițiile care au dus la marile descoperiri ale epocii. Manastirea este expresia impietrita a mareției, fondata in 1160 de Marele Maestru al Templierilor. Urmatoarea noastra destinație Fatima, este unul dintre cele doua locuri de pelerinaj din Europa – consfintite de Papalitate – in care si-a facut aparitia Fecioara Maria in 1917, in fața a trei copii din satul din apropiere. Pe pajiștile de odinioara, acum se inalța doua biserici impresionante ca frumusețe și ca marime. Pentru catolici, Fatima este unul din locurile de pelerinaj cele mai de seama, iar o vizita aici ne ofera o idee despre dimensiunea culturii religioase a acestei țari profund catolice.

CONDIȚII DE CALATORIE

· Este necesara prezența la aeroport cu 3 ore mai devreme fața de orele de plecare.

· Fiecare pasager are inclus maxim un bagaj de cala, cu o greutate de pana la 20 kg și un bagaj de mana care nu poate depași 7 kg.

· Agenția de turism nu este responsabila de eventualele modificari ale zilelor sau orarului zborurilor, operate de companiile aeriene și nici pentru eventualele modificari ale programului survenite datorita acestora.

· Deși se fac toate eforturile pentru a opera tururile cum sunt prezentate, in unele ocazii (condiții meteo nefavorabile, drumuri blocate, etc.), poate fi necesar sa facem modificari la traseu sau ordinea obiectivelor din itinerar, fara a se afecta structura generala a programului.

· Autoritațile locale iși rezerva dreptul de a refuza intrarea pe teritoriul statului a persoanelor care nu prezinta suficienta incredere. Agenția nu poate fi facuta raspunzatoare pentru astfel de situații.

· Minorii care calatoresc neinsoțiți de ambii parinți sau doar cu unul dintre parinți, trebuie sa prezinte autoritaților vamale acordul ambilor parinți sau al celui care nu-i insoțește, autentificat la notariat. Adultul care-i insoteste, in cazul in care acesta nu este unul dintre parinti, trebuie sa prezinte și cazierul judiciar.

· Grupul minim pentru a organiza acest program este de 20 persoane.

· Plata se face in euro sau lei (curs BNR din ziua respectiva + 2%).

· Tarifele pot suferi modificari in funcție de fluctuațiile taxelor sau ale petrolului, impuse de compania aeriana.

· Ca urmare a pandemiei coronavirusului, anumite obiective turistice accepta doar plați facute cu cardul sau metode de plata fara contact (cu telefonul), in loc de numerar.
