D23 offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience in nostalgia to diehard disney fans.

On May 6, 1940, Walt Disney’s employees finished the arduous task of moving into the brand-new Walt Disney Studios location in Burbank, California. At the time of the move, Robin Coons, a reporter with the Associated Press, was concerned about Disney’s decision to relocate.

“I was worried because the removal to the new factory, still in progress, could change the Disney atmosphere as drastically as a Disney venture into big business,” she wrote. “So I went out and browsed around the big new lot, and I’m happy to report that Disney is still Disney, and the Disney lot is still like no other in this town or any other.”

Coons continued her happy report, adding that “the artists work in roomier, air-conditioned, more convenient quarters, but their walls are still adorned with those extra-curricular inspirations indicative of the sans-souci spirit of old. There was Walt himself in a leather jacket, still being called plain ‘Walt’ by everybody in sight.”

The elated reporter complimented Walt Disney , his relationship with his employees, and the overall morale of the organization, saying the following in her report:

There may be other lots with almost as much loyalty to the head man as here; there certainly are lots with more formidable lines of time clocks, but there isn’t another with a higher morale.

That was more than 80 years ago, but a sense of that morale and the nostalgia of Disney days gone by can still be felt within the walls and halls of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. And as part of the Disney100 celebration this year , D23, the Ultimate Disney Fan Club, is inviting ultimate Disney fans to step back in time with a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Studios.

From February 6 to March 31, 2023, Disney fans of all ages are invited to a very special tour of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank.

How to Tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank

Have you ever dreamed of getting to tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank? This is one of the hardest studios in Los Angeles to get to see. There are only three studios that offer tours that anyone can buy tickets for. Those studios are Paramount , Sony and Warner Bros . The main ways that you can tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank are through D23 Events, Disney Movie Insider Rewards, and Adventures By Disney.

What is D23? It is The Official Disney Fan Club! Earlier this year I attended the D23 Expo which I highly recommend. You can be a general member for free or a gold member for a price. For $99.99 a year, plus shipping and taxes, you can join the club. There will be a few free member events throughout the year but most activities require you to spend more money to attend. However, if you really want to tour the studio you’ll most likely find the price tag worth the investment.

At least two times a year club members can purchase tickets to tour the studio. This tour always sells out though so you do have to pay close attention to when it goes on sale. The best way to stay informed is to check the D23 events page on their website often. The pricing starts at $99 and goes up from there. Pricing is more for general members (the free membership), and it is more expensive for weekend tours as well. You can find tickets and available tour times through the D23 event page when availability permits.

What does this tour entail? According to the D23 website, you can expect a 2 and 1/2 hour tour which includes a visit to Walt Disney’s Office and the archives.

Disney Movie Insiders Rewards Program

Did you know that you can earn points for watching Disney movies in theatres and by purchasing Disney Movies on DVD and BluRay? Once you create an account with Disney Movie Insider Rewards and start earning points you can redeem them for great rewards. One of the rewards is to tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. This reward costs 12,000 points so it will take a while to earn enough.

Adventures By Disney

Adventures By Disney is a way to travel while having Disney take care of everything. There is a four-day tour of Los Angeles. This experience gives you access to the park in a unique way and provides a tour of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. You even get to tour Imagineering. These trips and experiences with ABD can be very pricey but you certainly get some spectacular experiences. You can see pricing and details here .

awe shucks… from the headline, I was hoping there was a return to the back lot tour that used to take place at the Florida Studio’s lot. The action of the Catastrophe Canyon sequence was one to remember, and I am so upset that the next generation will not be able to enjoy this groundbreaking attraction. So much was lost when the Fl. Studios became a thrill park instead of a working studio.

Field Trip: Walt Disney Studios Tour

Field Trip: Walt Disney Studios Tour

Thanks to D23 I was able to tour the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank on a VIP tour, exploring the campus and learning many new facts about the hundred-year-old company. Here are the highlights and my overall thoughts on the tour.

d23 disney studio tour 2023

D23, the official Disney fan club, hosts VIP tours at Walt Disney Studios throughout the year that members can register for. These tours explore the campus from the animation buildings to Walt’s office to the sound stages and the archives. It all ends with a stop at the Disney Legends Plaza and the Disney Employee stores.

The tour overall was quite relaxing and enjoyable. Our tour guide Linda was very pleasant and knowledgeable, keeping an uplifted energy to the experience that genuinely made the time go by quickly. She also paid attention to our groups’ personal favorites and would pinpoint specific facts for us. As an example, once I admitted that I am very much a Disney Parks fan above all else, she would mention certain theme park projects that were completed at the studios. She was a big part of why I enjoyed the tour as much as I did.

d23 disney studio tour 2023

My favorite part of the tour was seeing Walt’s office. It is a faithful recreation with all of the items that were previously archived following Walt’s death, located in the original suite Walt worked in. He actually has two offices side by side, one being the formal office for important meetings and home to the iconic Sherman Brothers piano and the other the working office where his closest collaborates met to come up with the next big Disney project. Both of these spaces had me a bit emotional, to be honest. The formal office greatly reminded me of my own grandfather’s office which both warmed my heart and made me miss him. And the working office made me audibly gasp seeing the large Disneyland map on the wall with notes about upcoming (at the time) projects for the park as well as EPCOT concept art.

d23 disney studio tour 2023

Other highlights of the tour were seeing a breakdown of the animation process while exploring all the artwork that made some of our favorite films. This included concept art for Bambi and Aladdin, cells from Sleeping Beauty, backgrounds from 101 Dalmations and The Lion King, and an explanation of how all of these elements come together to make Disney’s classic animations. On our way to Walt’s offices, we pass many historic photos of the man at work, including drawing Mickey Mouse, having tea with Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, and many historic moments from Disneyland. A big highlight was holding a real Oscar won by Walt. And the Disney Legends Plaza was a perfect end where we could see who all were inducted and see the only Partners Statue (A statue of Walt and Mickey) that you can get close to.

d23 disney studio tour 2023

The Walt Disney Studios Tour hosted by D23 was a very fun and relaxed experience where I actually learned new facts about the iconic company and the man who started it all. If you are a Disney fan and ever have the chance to tour the studios, I recommend that you take it.

The event brought fans and creators together. People enjoyed fun interviews and Q&A sessions, and listening to the talented individuals behind Disney’s famous stories and characters made the event special.

Exclusive Previews and Teasers

One of the best things about D23 is seeing what Disney will do next. All the people who went to the entertainment showcase got a special first look at new movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm.

Attendees had a great time seeing previews of live-action remakes. They got to see Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen in the new live-action movie. There was also some concept art for upcoming animated films. Pixar talked about a fifth Toy Story film, but they did not share a new trailer for it. A highlight of the night was the performance by the cast of “Agatha All Along.” Kathryn Hahn, Patti Lupone, and others sang “Down the Witch’s Road” and gave a sneak peek of the new show coming in September to Disney+.

Interactive Exhibits and Immersive Experiences

D23 is not just about talks and panels. It offers a chance to enjoy exclusive Disney experiences. This year, the event had amazing exhibits that showed Disney’s magic. Fans could visit Pixar Animation and Disney Animation Studios. They could see detailed models, original artwork, and fun displays. Visitors enjoyed behind-the-scenes looks at how animations are made. There were also photo ops that made guests feel like they were in their favorite films. I personally loved the Imagineering area where they “pulled back the curtain” to show how our favorite attractions, cruise ships, and shows are made.

No D23 experience is really complete without some limited-edition merchandise . The event offered many special items, clothes, and other Disney surprises just for those who attended. You could find unique pins and outfits featuring popular characters. This year, many exhibitors joined “The Great Pin Pursuit.” This fun activity encouraged guests to visit different booths to collect various pins from Disney+, Hulu, Honda, FX, and other sponsors.

Limited Edition Releases

D23 is well-known for its unique merchandise, and this year was no exception. The Disney Company understands how much fans enjoy these items. The special items at D23 are valuable and can turn into popular collectibles. They represent what the event celebrates: Disney’s rich history, what it is creating now, and its future plans. If you wanted a special keepsake to add to your collection, the limited edition items at D23 Marketplace were a must-purchase.

Must-Have Disney D23 Souvenirs

For fans of Disney, souvenirs from the event are a must-have. Commemorative pins are popular among collectors. In addition, exclusive D23 designs appeared on T-shirts, jackets, and hats. Warner Bros.? Paramount? Universal? How to choose the best Hollywood studio tour for you

An illustration of a studio tour tram made of various features from studio lot tours.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

When it comes to L.A. outings, the movie studio tour can be easy for locals to overlook. After all, surrounded by Hollywood productions, the entire city can feel like a stage. And if you’ve been on backlots or know people who work in the film and television industries, the magic of the moving picture may already be demystified.

And yet there’s still much to adore about an afternoon jaunt through a filmmaking campus.

In a city that’s too often unjustly stereotyped as favoring the new, the Hollywood studio reminds us of how much history — and, specifically, pop-culture myth-making — is rooted in and around Los Angeles. There in these spaces, you might see a spot where James Dean once stood, roll past the “Psycho” house, step into a partly dressed soundstage or walk through a sound-making Foley factory. Our studios remain working palaces dedicated to crafting dreams.

That all may sound romanticized — the reality of “ making it ” in Hollywood is increasingly challenging, and the studio itself is threatened by a global, digital and consolidating production industry — but it’s only meant to note what’s at risk.

For me, the studio tour was once a go-to destination when out-of-towners came to visit. These days, I like to revisit one every few years, just as a reminder to remain uncynical and to marvel at the talent and cinematic art that this region has invented. And each tour has a slightly different flavor. Whether it’s animation history you crave or museum-like installations, there’s a tour for every kind of film buff.

Universal Studios

A tram enters a fake Western-styled town.

Best for: Seekers of thrills and cinematic magic

It’s not an exaggeration to say that if there was no tram tour on the Universal Studios lot, there would be no Universal Studios theme park. Sixty years ago, the backlot tram tour began as a way, in part, to increase commissary sales as tourists liked the opportunity to dine on the lot. Quickly, however, those running the tour had a realization that every studio trek has to confront: looking at giant soundstages or deserted sets is fun for only so long.

How the Universal Studios tram tour defined the modern theme park

The most important theme park ride ever created? It may just be the Universal Studios tram tour, which dates to the silent film era. Once primarily a behind-the-scenes tour, the trek has evolved to define the modern theme park.

Aug. 3, 2023

Thus, Universal Studios pioneered the concept of melding the tour with various attractions — cinematic illusions such as a flash flood, a runaway train or, in the late ’80s, an earthquake simulator. Today, the tram tour — now officially designated as the World-Famous Studio Tour — is but one part of a larger theme park, designed to show us mini-attractions such as an encounter with a shark from “Jaws” or a 3-D ride alongside King Kong. Yes, there are backlot sets, including instantly recognizable locations from “Back to the Future,” “Pyscho,” “Desperate Housewives” and, most recently, “Nope.” But this 60-minute journey is more than a behind-the-scenes look. Instead, the focus is on the emotion and excitement of movie-making mirages.

A mechanical shark leaps out of the water.

There is even a lesser known VIP option to exploring the park. Expect to spend around $400 per person for it, but the perks include a longer tour with the ability to walk around the sets, venture into a prop house and likely set foot on a soundstage.

Universal Studios, 100 Universal City Plaza. The tram tour is included with theme park admission, which varies per day but ranges from $109 to $149 per person. For more information , visit universalstudioshollywood.com .

Warner Bros.

A wizard's hat sits above a chair

Best for: Fans of interactive exhibits, Central Perk selfies and everything “Harry Potter”

Warner Bros. has always had a showman’s approach to its studio tour, opening its gates to the public in the mid-’60s to herald the arrival of “The Great Race” with cars, props and a behind-the-scenes featurette to accompany a backlot venture. It’s a mindset that continues today, as the Warner Bros. Studio Tour aims to walk the line between pure history and entertainment, with numerous recent expansions into interactive installations. Come for the tour, stay for a potion-making mini-game to celebrate the “Harry Potter” franchise or the ability to pose with multiple Batmobiles.

An assemblage of props, including a bear in a top hat.

Travel & Experiences

Classic film lovers: See James Dean’s apartment and more on new TCM tour at Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. is now offering a Turner Classic Movies behind-the-scenes tour that will bring guests to previous off-limit areas of the lot.

April 16, 2024

The standard tour offers about a 60-minute tram outing. Expect to stop and walk among its suburban town, where guides will point out filming locations from “Friends,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Cool Hand Luke” and more, as well as to see the wilds of San Fernando Valley, including a forest area that’s been used in the likes of “Jurassic Park,” “True Blood” and “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.” There’s also a Turner Classic Movies-themed tour , if you lean more toward cinematic classics such as “Casablanca” and “Rebel Without a Cause.”

A series of green screens await guests.

But what truly separates Warner Bros. from its competitors is recent investments in a re-creation of the “Friends” Central Perk Café — yes, you can dine there — and its surrounding museum-like exhibits. Interactive tables will allow you to explore the actors of Warner Bros. past and present, while special effects stations can add or subtract digital accouterments with the movement of a knob. There’s up-sell green screen photo ops, short films and demonstrations of motion-capture technology. A secondary stop pulls from tricks from the theme park industry, with photo ops pegged to DC superhero films and the “Potter” franchise, including the ability to be assigned a personality by the latter’s wizardly Sorting Hat.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour, 3400 Warner Blvd., Burbank. The standard tour starts at $73 ; Southern California residents receive a $12 discount through Dec. 17 , with deluxe and VIP offerings providing additional exploration of the studio’s backlot. For more information , visit wbstudiotour.com.

Walt Disney Studios

Walt Disney's desk in his office.

Best for: Disney history buffs and animation lovers

If Disneyland idealizes American stories and Western takes on classic fairy tales, then a trip to the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank grounds them in a bit more reality. But it is still Disney, so expect a little bit of folkloric mythologizing, especially when it comes to company founder Walt Disney.

A centerpiece of the 2½-hour tour — open only to members of the Disney fan club D23, including those with a free membership — is the meticulous restoration of Disney’s five-room office suite. It’s a treasure trove of items belonging to Disney — or re-creations of them, such as a reproduction of the special Oscar he won for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” with a normal-sized statuette and seven smaller ones. Marvel, too, at the Disneyland master plan, with nods to what were then recently completed projects such as It’s a Small World. The office is preserved as it would have looked at the time of Disney’s death in 1966. (Note: At the time of publication, the office was due for renovation in late 2024.)

A twilight scene of a boat ride through a bioluminescent forest

‘Avatar,’ ‘Coco’ attractions are coming to Disneyland — and other big news from D23

Disney announces at the D23 fan convention that the World of Avatar and a ‘Coco’-themed boat ride are in the works for Disney California Adventure Park.

Aug. 11, 2024

Additionally, no other tour is as dedicated to the art of animation as this one. No real surprise, of course, but guests will visit the original animation building — where “Cinderella” and “Lady and the Tramp,” among many others, were created — and learn about Disney’s many advancements to the medium. Discover, too, the unique construction of the lot, and clever efforts to conceal precious hand-drawn animation cels from the sun. The tour also includes a stop at the Walt Disney Archives, the working research lab dedicated to preserving all things Disney.

The Walt Disney Studios Official Tour, 500 S . Buena Vista St., Burbank. D23 members are allowed to purchase two tickets; ticket cost varies by membership level but starts at $79. For more information , visit d23.com/upcoming-events.

Sony Pictures

A Culver City movie studio with a rainbow sculpture in the distance.

Best for: Game show devotees and a vision of Oz

The Times first wrote about a tour of the famed MGM Studios lot in the late ’60s. Times, culture and ownership have changed, and the now Sony Pictures Studio Tour no longer, for instance, provides a look at Esther Williams’ private swimming pool. Today, it begins with a re-creation of the “Seinfeld” set and props from the “Men in Black” films. The Culver City lot still offers the occasional nod to its past, via architectural allusions to MGM’s history or artist Tony Tasset’s 94-foot, 2012-constructed rainbow that references “The Wizard of Oz,” which was filmed at the locale.

Four photos of boulders, mountains, trees and a church with the words "let's go!" in front and a stamp in the corner.

The 101 best West Coast experiences

Essential things to do, see and eat right now in California, Oregon, Washington, the Baja Peninsula and British Columbia. Ready to explore?

May 16, 2024

A signature of the modern Sony Pictures tour is a stop on the sets of venerable game shows such as “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune,” provided they’re not in the midst of filming. But even if they are, you’ll still have the opportunity to stand before a green screen and take home a “Jeopardy!” picture as a memento.

You’ll also likely get a look at various working aspects of the studio. On the day I visited, we strolled through the sound production offices to see how Foley artists operate. Imagine a darkened, cramped room that looks like someone’s garage filled with old clothes, crusty leaves, an assortment of footwear and broken machinery.

An RV with fake bullet holes.

It was a brief chance to play, as guests stepped among different floor types to create various sounds. We also spent a moment in an overdub room, mimicking the creation of white noise from a crowd.

“Breaking Bad” and Ghostbusters” fans will snare a look at vehicles used in productions. For a different perspective, schedule one of Sony’s evening tours.

Sony Pictures, 3990 Overland Ave ., Culver City. Tours start at $55. For more information, visit sonypicturesstudiostours.com.

Paramount Pictures

A giant orange-ish robot.

Best for: Those looking for Hollywood nostalgia

Paramount dispenses with the slickness and some of the how-to’s of other tours, focusing instead on its historic Hollywood locale on Melrose Avenue. A sense of grandeur permeates the lot, thanks in large part to the ornate archway of the Bronson Gate — which was a filming location for “Sunset Boulevard.” On Paramount’s standard tour, you’ll learn how Alfred Hitchcock nearly destroyed a soundstage to film “Rear Window,” and glimpse the lot’s expansive “blue sky tank,” which can create oceanic illusions. On the day I visited, we explored a soundstage dressed for Taylor Tomlinson’s “After Midnight,” and paused to watch crews ready the lot’s New York streets for filming.

At a prop warehouse specifically geared for the tour, one can step on a transporter from “Star Trek Beyond.” Also present: costumes for the “Halo” series, a full-scale Bumblebee from the “Transformers” films and mushrooms and an “egg mobile” from the “Sonic the Hedgehog” movies. This is more of a gallery-like setup than it is a venture into a working prop house.

The two-hour Paramount tour is relatively intimate, featuring a small group and a tour guide armed with an iPad. Higher-priced options offer a look into more operational archival areas of the lot, but as it stands, it’s primarily a chance to see a historic Hollywood lot, one potentially on the verge of significant change .

Paramount Pictures, 5515 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles. Tour start at $65. For more information, visit paramountstudiotour.com.

Walt Disney Studios: Take a tour of the working lot

walt disney studio tour

Pausing at the intersection of Mickey Ave. and Dopey Drive – which doubles as Pluto's Corner – it's evident that The Walt Disney Studios isn't merely a place where movies are made. To many, it's hallowed ground. To be able to walk among the buildings where so much creativity has been flourishing and where so much of the cultural zeitgeist has been forged for generations is a wonderful and rare treat.

But not that rare. You too could stroll down Mickey Ave. and ogle the history-making studios.

Unlike Universal, Warner Bros., and other movie lots, The Walt Disney Company does not offer regular public tours of its studios. But there are two ways you could make it past the gates. As part of its Southern California itinerary, Adventures by Disney takes vacationers to the Burbank lot for a guided visit. Or, premium members of Disney's official D23 fan club can sign up for exclusive studio tours, which the club presents a few times a year.

Jeffrey Epstein, director of corporate communications at Disney, took me on a modified version of the club's two-and-a-half-hour tour. On the day I visited, there didn't appear to be any major production activity, and the lot seemed fairly hushed. But the nostalgia-tinged grounds screamed at every turn. "So many of the things you see here on the studio lot are icons in their own right," Epstein says.

The Burbank lot, which dates back to 1940, is not Disney's original studio. (Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood in 1923, hence the name of the fan club.) The company moved remnants of its earlier Hyperion Studio, where Mickey Mouse took shape and the world's first animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , was produced, to the current spot where they remain to this day. Those remnants include a production bungalow and a building identified as "Shorts," which refers to the animated shorts that were once Disney's stock in trade.

The animation building is among the highlights of the tour. This is where many of the company's legendary films, starting with Dumbo , were crafted. The walls are lined with storyboards, model sheets, and other reminders of movies such as Lady and the Tramp ,  Bambi,  and Aladdin . Epstein pointed out the building's long hallways and its many wings, which were designed to maximize natural light for the artists.

There is an underground tunnel that connects the animation building to the inking and painting building. The passageway helped protect the artists' hand-drawn cels from the elements when they were delivered between the buildings. Legions of inkers and painters (all of whom were women, by the way) painstakingly finished each cel by hand and prepared them to be photographed. The inking process, even for hand-drawn animation, is now done using computers, and the building is primarily used for offices today. Salvaged jars of the brightly colored inks are nonetheless on display.

The studio's plush, 400-seat theatre is used to screen films that are both in production and have been completed. The theatre occasionally hosts screenings for critics and special events for D23 members.

There are a number of soundstages that are used for live action productions. One of them is dedicated to Julie Andrews who filmed both The Princess Diaries  and Mary Poppins  there. Many of the exterior scenes for the 2013 movie, Saving Mr. Banks , which is about the making of the seminal Mary Poppins , were shot on location at the studios. There is a sense of authenticity as Tom Hanks, who portrays Walt Disney in the film, makes his way around the lot, because it retains the look and feel of the era when Mary Poppins  was made.

The producers of Saving Mr. Banks  had to build a set for the scenes inside Walt Disney's office since the actual office had long been dismantled. But in 2015, the company reproduced the office suite in its original location on the third floor of the animation building. It is now another highlight of the D23 tour.

Epstein says that the company's archives team meticulously replicated the space as it looked when Walt Disney died in 1966, including quirks such as books that were left upside down. "Although it's a place that is of the 1960s, it serves as a place of inspiration for D23 members," he notes. "You can see that Walt was looking forward. There was a map of what would become Walt Disney World, for example."

Another feature of the suite is its custom-designed piano. Richard Sherman, who wrote the music for Mary Poppins  and other Disney projects with his brother Robert, has returned to play on the piano that he used to preview songs for Walt back in the day.

A visit to the archives department, which is dedicated to documenting and preserving the history of the company, is also part of the tour. Among the artifacts on display the day I visited the archives were an animator's desk, original birthday portraits of Mickey Mouse drawn by legendary animator and Imagineer John Hench, and Walt Disney's Disneyland employee badge.

While he's been gone for decades, Walt Disney still looms large at the studio that bears his name. A statue of Walt and Mickey Mouse stands at the center of Legends Plaza. The area also features handprints of many of the celebrities, creative professionals, and others who have made contributed their talents to the company.

The plaza leads to the Team Disney building, which serves as the company's corporate headquarters. The fanciful structure, which was designed by noted architect Michael Graves, includes statues of the Seven Dwarfs built into the upper reaches of its exterior. They symbolize, according to Epstein, their oversized role in "holding up the studios from the beginning."

Snow White  was an artistic and cultural landmark, and the profits from the highly successful film were used to build the Burbank studios. But another architectural nod to the company's past is even more apt. Etched into the tiles of the entranceway to the Team Disney building is an evocative, larger-than-life photo of a young Walt Disney standing in a doorway. Bathed in a yellow spotlight next to him is the silhouette of Mickey Mouse. They were the true foundation of the company.

Warner Bros.? Paramount? Universal? How to choose the best Hollywood studio tour for you

An illustration of a studio tour tram made of various features from studio lot tours.

Disney announces at the D23 fan convention that the World of Avatar and a ‘Coco’-themed boat ride are in the works for Disney California Adventure Park.

Disney Studios, Burbank, California

The 45 acre site is the only studio in the Los Angeles area that has stayed in the hands of the founders of the company throughout its life.

Although the studio site was originally conceived as servicing only the company’s animation work (the large animation building is still central to the campus) over the years a number of soundstages have been added to accommodate an increasing complexity of live-action work.

Many of the attractions for the Disneyland park were assembled and tested at the studio before installation in the park.

Soundstages

  • Soundstage 3 was originally built for 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea – the water tank still exists under the floor

D23 Walt Disney Studios Tour

August 15, 2009.

We were VERY lucky to make it into one of D23’s first free tours of the Walt Disney Studios. In fact, I am expecting it to be the only D23 event we ever get into, if they keep doing everything first-come, first-served on the Web for 20,000 members. Every other event I’ve tried to get into has sold out before my computer even brought up the link to click on, but on this occasion they accidentally posted the link 3 minutes early and I saw it in time to make it onto a waiting list. When they decided to add more tours each day, we got in!

walt disney studio tour

Ooooh! Parking lot! Behind it is the building where all the animation takes place today – we didn’t go there

We arrived at the studio at 11:30am for our 12pm tour. They had us park and walk over to what is sort of the “show” front part of the studio, near the gym, the commissary, the conference rooms and the company store.

walt disney studio tour

(If the photo is bad, you’ll know it came from my iPhone)

They’d set up a check-in point where we showed our ID and D23 card to get a wristband, a D23 Expo pin (they are pushing that thing hard!) and a color sticker indicating our tour group.

walt disney studio tour

The family of four ahead of us was trying to get the son and dad into the tour even though only the mom had registered for the event (and her daughter got to be her one guest), but Disney stuck to the rules and told them they couldn’t come. DH told me if he’d been the dad, he woulda made it up to the son by taking him over to Griffith Park to see the carousel and Walt’s Barn, and then visit Travel Town. I think they went to Starbucks instead.

As we waited for the tour to begin, some of the blue-shirted D23 staffers took groups to the bathrooms at the commissary. It was fun to chat with them and find out what their jobs were, because they were real-live D23 employees who workon the magazine. I got to be obnoxious and tell them their copyediting needs work – tee hee!

walt disney studio tour

Oooh! Vintage phone booth!

walt disney studio tour

Last time I was at the Studios, I got to eat at the commissary – the food was really good, unlike the food at the faux commissary in Disney's Hollywood Studios...

D23 had put out big photos at some of the tour stops. This one at the beginning of the tour shows the studio in the ‘60s.

walt disney studio tour

“What? You gonna let some dorky little sign tell you what to do? C’mon – gimme that burger!"

When the tour started, we were split into two groups. Ours went on the studio tour first, while the other went to see the Archives first. Our tour guide was so funny – she told us we could take as many pix of her as we wanted as long as she wasn’t talking, because the day after the last round of tours, she’d found unflattering mid-sentence pix of herself all over the Internet!

The first area we saw was the last remnant of the permanent sets on the lot, a single row of storefronts. They used to have a Wild West town, a small Mexican village (for Zorro), and someplace that I can’t remember what it was but they used it for Darby O’Gill and the Little People . (Soon to be screened at the D23 Expo – get yer tickets NOW!!!)

walt disney studio tour

Across the way was the back of the Ink & Paint building, which our guide painted as kind of a women’s ghetto, since it was the only department they were allowed to work in and their amenities consisted of a break room and, uh, a place to drink tea (wait til you hear what the men got in their building…).

walt disney studio tour

We continued down this sort of back street behind the soundstages and stopped at the one where WED Enterprises built lots of the vehicles for Disneyland, including the train, the monorail and I think she said this is where the Mark Twain was built.

walt disney studio tour

...Perhaps the hippos were built here too?

walt disney studio tour

Our next stop was Soundstage 3, which is not quite as famous as Soundstage 2, where Mary Poppins was filmed and which has been dedicated to Julie Andrews. That stage was being used for some TV show that I can’t remember what it is. Soundstage 3 was built to shoot the classic squid attack scene in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – they actually dug out the floor and filled it with water!

walt disney studio tour

If you can see the blue tape lines on the floor – that’s where the tank was for 20,000 Leagues

Next we headed back the way we’d come and turned down a side street near the old film vaults.

walt disney studio tour

Now that the animators and, well, everybody, it seems, has moved over to new buildings across the street and around Burbank, all of the buildings are used for something different than what they were built for. These film vaults were built like bunkers because the old kind of film stock, nitrate, was highly combustible. I don’t remember what these fireproof vaults are used for now – maybe they keep Zac Efron here…

walt disney studio tour

This is the only building where they still do what the sign says, except that in the year 2009 those crazy kids do a different kind of “cutting” here...

walt disney studio tour

Our tour guide was good about stopping us in shady places. We paused on the steps of the next building because it was the best place to get pictures of the water tower. She told us that it was built with six legs instead of four in order to withstand earthquakes (the hope was that it would collapse straight down instead of tipping over). It used to hold the water needed to heat and cool the entire studio, and at one point Walt wanted to see if it could be turned into an employee pool! No dice…

walt disney studio tour

The next place we went was the Animation Building. It was built in a sort of E shape so that every office had a window, enabling the animators to draw with natural light.

walt disney studio tour

All the windows except those facing north, which naturally get the best light, had louvered shades so that lighting could be adjusted.

walt disney studio tour

Here our guide also told us all about the good life enjoyed by the male employees of the studio. Although the building was 3 floors around the perimeter, the center had a fourth floor that housed a private club for men only. There was a restaurant, a sauna and I think an exercise room where the animators could go unwind. (I should prolly be verifying all of this online, but let’s just assume the guide knew what she was talking about!). I dunno if it’s all still up there – I would have loved to see it!

Instead, I give you a picture of a hall:

walt disney studio tour

We walked down the center of the building and were allowed to take pictures of the concept art lining the walls, including…

walt disney studio tour

Backgrounds from one of my childhood favorites, “The Cold-Blooded Penguin,” about a penguin who dreams of moving to a warmer climate.

walt disney studio tour

... and concept art for The Princess & the Frog

Someone’s going to have to help me out with this one – is it from Bambi ?

walt disney studio tour

At this point our guide stopped us and said “Walt Disney World likes to brag about its Utilidors, but *we* were the first to have them!” She told us about the tunnel from Animation to Ink & Paint that kept cells from getting wet in the copious amounts of rain Burbank gets. And then she took us down into it!!!

Before we went into the tunnel, she said that poor Jennifer Garner must’ve run up and down these halls hundreds of times for Alias .

walt disney studio tour

The glow of the Coke machine cleverly distracts the bad guys chasing Jennifer Garner...

walt disney studio tour

When we emerged in the Ink & Paint building, we got to look into the main paint-mixing room and saw some of the original bottles of the stuff! Apparently it lasts forever.

walt disney studio tour

On the way out, they had a photo of the original Hyperion studios for us. Some of the buildings were moved to the Burbank lot, but the rest were demolished, and today the site holds a Gelson’s supermarket.

walt disney studio tour

Back outside, our guide pointed out Walt Disney’s office for us. They also had a picture of the interior. Today it’s being used by Shaun Cassidy. Apparently he’s one of the more reverent tenants the space has had, but it amazes me that they don’t hold Walt’s office out of the pool of rentable space and do something special with it.

walt disney studio tour

At some point we saw the big fancy building Michael Eisner had built. Maybe on the way back into the Animation building to walk down more halls?

walt disney studio tour

More halls!

walt disney studio tour

I’ve always loved the backgrounds in Lady & the Tramp

walt disney studio tour

The “Hall of Kings” where Frank, Ollie, and many of the other most famous Disney animators had their offices.

walt disney studio tour

LOVE the 101 Dalmatians concepts!

walt disney studio tour

Next we briefly backtracked toward the front of the studio to talk about the Hyperion Bungalow, which is from the original lot (I’ve heard it’s the oldest building at the studio) and is now a conference room.

walt disney studio tour

And the Mickey topiary. There was a funny story about how Disney World sent this topiary to the studios as a gift, and there were originally to be a bunch of them, but this one is having so many problems staying alive that they had to scrap the plan.

walt disney studio tour

You’ve prolly seen the corner of Dopey Drive and Mickey Avenue a lot. The sign was created for the “documentary” The Reluctant Dragon and it’s still here!

walt disney studio tour

Pluto’s paw prints are in the asphalt here…

walt disney studio tour

Before we went into the Archives, we made a stop at Legends Plaza, which runs from the Seven Dwarfs building down to the building housing the Archives. Patrick says it used to have a fountain in it, but now it’s just a big patio.

walt disney studio tour

Yikes! Unlike Oscar, this award could KILL you if you fell on it

Disney gives out Legends Awards to people who have been instrumental in its success, and I guess at the ceremony they put their handprints down the way stars used to put their footprints in the cement in front of the Chinese Theater. We only had 10 minutes here, so everyone dashed about trying to find the prints of their favorites.

walt disney studio tour

We spotted Virginia Davis’ handprints first. I just learned she passed on that very day.

walt disney studio tour

We've actually seen this guy's Legends Award in person at his house!

walt disney studio tour

Marc Davis, Ward Kimball, Frank Thomas & Ollie Johnston – Look closely, cuz one of these things is not like the others!

walt disney studio tour

The Sherman Brothers’ hands!

At the Archives end of the plaza is another Partners statue. I wasn’t particularly interested in it until someone mentioned it was the closest one would ever get to the Partners’ statue, and then I dashed down there to get an intimate portrait (graciously snapped by the Editor In Chief of D23’s magazine!).

walt disney studio tour

Finally they called “time” and we were off to see the Archives. I think we managed to read almost every handprint plaque though.

walt disney studio tour

One of the D23 writers pointed out that the film strip overhang above the building’s name appears to come off the reels painted above it

walt disney studio tour

We only spent a few moments in the lobby, and I wish we could have been there longer because they had a fantastic display of hats from various Disney movies.

walt disney studio tour

Mary Poppins’ hat!

walt disney studio tour

My fave, the Rocketeer’s helmet

walt disney studio tour

Ah, TRON...

walt disney studio tour

Cue EPCOT opening theme song: “We did some things/And other stuff/We put things up/And layed them down/We made some costumes/And jumped around/We’re getting ready for yooooooooou!”

They also had on display costumes from such Disney classics as Hannah Montana and High School Musical XIV: The Reckoning . I took some shots of the curtain dress from Enchanted and the dress Barbossa gave Elizabeth in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but they were really glare-y…

walt disney studio tour

Wow – one of only two or three multiplane cameras anywhere!

walt disney studio tour

Outside the Archives...

walt disney studio tour

Inside the Archives

walt disney studio tour

We were snickering when we got inside because the room is soooo tiny, yet D23’s magazine ran a promo photo of the Archives picturing the place full of people reading, writing, staring thoughtfully into middle space, etc. They must’ve been midgets!

Waiting for us inside the Archives was none other than Dave Smith, Chief Archivist and founder of the Walt Disney Archives! Like a lot of other Disney nerds, I want to be him when I grow up.

walt disney studio tour

Dave is great! He told us a bit about what was in the cases around the room and then brought out some rare items for us to see and showed them around. Most of them were in archival sleeves, but some he’d take out and hold in his hand, and I’d think “Yikes! Shouldn’t he be wearing gloves or something?”

walt disney studio tour

Cases full of merchandise from many different decades

walt disney studio tour

Walt’s personal items

There are maquettes (3-D models used as reference by animators) all along the tops of the bookcases.

walt disney studio tour

I think my favorite artifact we saw was the mechanical bird that inspired Walt to develop Audio-Animatronics.

walt disney studio tour

Dave showed us a postcard Walt drew for his mother, noting that it disproved the theory that Walt couldn’t draw:

walt disney studio tour

A complete Disneyland ticket book

walt disney studio tour

Probably the first merchandise licensed by Disney

This script for Steamboat Willie was found in Walt’s desk drawer after he died, seeming to indicate that he was always mindful of the roots of his success.

walt disney studio tour

Original backgrounds for Steamboat Willie – gack! Only one of them is in protective plastic!

walt disney studio tour

Walt’s doodle in a scrapbook

We also saw the very first ticket sold to Disneyland (Roy bought it) and some Opening Day ephemera like the commemorative ticket and an intact parking pass. We were given about 10 minutes to wander around the Archives, and when I saw someone getting their picture with Dave, I jumped on the bandwagon!

walt disney studio tour

Looky! I wear glasses too! I could be the next Chief Archivist!

walt disney studio tour

Original background plate from The Old Mill

walt disney studio tour

Dave recently told a story in one of the Disney publications about how he found this in the office of a Disney janitor, who said he’d found it in the trash years ago and pulled it out to keep on his shelf. It’s the original snow globe from Mary Poppins !

walt disney studio tour

All too soon, they were shooing us out of the Archives to get ready for the next group. On our way out we got replica Disney Studio security officer patches, which was cool but what am I going to do with all these patches? (They gave us a Disneyland one in the latest issue of the magazine). It’s not like I still own an acid-wash Guess jean jacket I can sew them on or anything…

walt disney studio tour

On the way out, we took some more random pictures. Someone saw me on my iPhone and asked “Are you taking notes?” to which I proudly replied, “I’m live-blogging on Twitter for the DIS Boards!” I don’t think they had ever heard of the DIS before – MiceChat and MousePlanet are more popular in this neck of the woods…

walt disney studio tour

Lurkyloo: Proudly bringing to the DIS such thrilling shots as these!

walt disney studio tour

Our last stop was the building containing the Disney Employee Center and the Studio Store. As a D23 staffer held the door open my eyes got big as saucers and I gasped, “You mean we actually get to BUY things here?!!!” Then I dashed inside and started filling our basket like I was on Supermarket Sweep .

walt disney studio tour

My brain got the part where we were being allowed to shop in a store that is off-limits to the general public, but it missed the part where we didn’t get the huge discount that Cast Members get. However, we didn’t fare too badly because a lot of stuff was on sale.

I didn’t realize there are actually two stores – the Employee Center had the more exclusive, cast member-only stuff (plus random daily necessities like Ritz crackers and InTouch Magazine), while the Studio Store was just a mini Disney Store with all the same junk—er, stuff.

walt disney studio tour

As I sprinted around the Employee Center trying to find my souvenir for the day, I kept coming back to the colorful display of generic gift shop merch at the front of the store. But I kept telling myself not to get it because it looked like stuff you could get anywhere!

walt disney studio tour

Even these Fantasia-themed candles look like you could find them in any old gift shop

Since I was striking out, I just started dumping stuff in the basket for Patrick: a “D” logo hat, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit pins, and an ugly but limited-edition Studio pin. He added a $12 T-shirt and some postcards.

After we checked out there, we went next door to the Studio Store.

walt disney studio tour

I guess Patrick really liked this mural!

walt disney studio tour

Finally, after another couple of turns through the Employee Center, I settled on a unique souvenir that would capture the essence of our tour and forever remind me of the very special day we spent at the Walt Disney Studios…

walt disney studio tour

… OK, no, for reals I broke down and got an anonymous mirrored picture frame with a vaguely Moroccan theme that seemed perfect for one of my fave wedding photos, and of course *I* will always know where I got it even if no one else does.

walt disney studio tour

To continue the theme, after we left we drove over to the circa 1945 Smoke House restaurant, where the Disney studio folks used to lunch. I read that it’s one of the stops on a personal tour D23 is auctioning off at the Expo in September, which also includes meeting Dave Smith, visiting the sites of all three Disney studios in L.A., riding on a miniature train courtesy of the LA Live Steamers, and visiting Walt’s Barn—all things we’ve done, so we pretty much just saved ourselves thousands of dollars!

walt disney studio tour

Talk about a throwback, this place still has red Naugahyde booths, a neon “Cocktails” sign outside the cavernous bar, and a menu where you half expect to see canned peaches over cottage cheese and a lettuce leaf as the “diet” special.

walt disney studio tour

The Smoke House is also HUGE – there were three dining rooms, plus a private room, and that bar the size of the main dining room. However, we were one of just four groups eating there that Saturday afternoon. They seated us next to a grouchy older couple who spent their entire meal complaining about people who constantly need to be on their “Palm-berries” and “peep” their every move. So I peeped about ’em!

We started with neon orange garlic cheese bread that tasted like a salt lick and doubles as a handy safety beacon in traffic….

walt disney studio tour

Next we split a tough, water-logged “grilled” artichoke accompanied by the Smoke House’s special mayo, which must’ve had MSG or crack or something in it because I would have eaten it on ANYTHING, even my Palmberry!

But the meal got a lot better after that. We split the Signature Barbeque Tri-Tip and a baked potato, which required them wheeling out a cart laden with vats of sour cream, chives and whipped butter so they could smear it all over the potater table-side.

walt disney studio tour

Yeah, this is only *half* a meal at the Smoke House...

After beaning both the remaining patrons when the top buttons ricocheted off our pants, we were going to pass on dessert…. until they brought over a ginormous dessert tray and one of the things on it was Boston Cream Pie! You never see Boston Cream Pie in restaurants! We had to get it.

walt disney studio tour

I loved that it had so much chocolate on it – usually the chocolate-icing-to-custard-and-cake ratio is really off. This was the perfect amount.

After that, we pretty much didn’t have to eat for the rest of the weekend!

In doing research for my little out of the way web site, I came across yours. Perfect. So much so that if you don’t object, I’ve linked to this page.

Wow I tried to get into the tours of the studio when they first started and were free but unlike you I was extremley unlucky and even though I hovered for almost a hour before constantly refreshing I still did not get in! I envy you and this helped to satisfy that incredible curiousity I had! Now the tours are an arm and a leg sigh! Dont know if I will ever get there now but it was so great to be able to see what I had missed and now I kind of feel like I have been there myself! Thank you ever so much for the tour! I may never get there now because of the price burt at least I feel like I have been there!

What a drag! Yeah, the online ticketing process for Disney events is a total mystery to me. It seems like invariably the site stalls out or crashes or just doesn’t let you in—you’d think a company of that size and influence would have the technology to make it all run smoothly. I’m sorry to hear you couldn’t get into the tour! 🙁

Man…that brought back memories. I used to work there! Two different stints actually. The first time in old bungalows (trailers) that were in the location where the Frank G. Wells building is now and then the second time actually in the FGW Building. Before they built that building there was actually still a set street back there that was sort of middle-america-neighborhood looking where they filmed a lot of the exteriors of those Hayley Mills era films. And when I worked there (second stint) there was still a reflecting pool/fountain between the FGW Bldg and the Team Disney (Seven Dwarfs) building. Wahhhhhh…I miss all my old co-workers now. And that castle symbol on the outside of one of the stages is lit up at night, used to love to see that. And there is (or used to be) an executive dining room up in the top floor/round part at the top of the Team Disney building. I ate there once and saw Richard Gere! and oh yeah…Michael Eisner as well. LOL!

What great memories! I’m jealous you got to see an actual street set on the lot—I would have loved that. So do you know why they took out the reflecting pool? I feel like someone said it was because it leaked or something, but it seems such a shame to replace it with a strip of concrete…

The leak thing is probably correct. There is a multi-level parking structure underneath that entire area between those two buildings. It was probably leaking onto the cars! I worked there during the time of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and the Roy O. Disney bldg (the modern building next to the commissary and across from the animation bldg) shifted off its foundation and had to be closed for months while it was reinforced with the big steel beams that you now see on the outside. I was glad I worked in a small bungalow at that time where it was easy to run outside during an aftershock!

Wow! Thanks for the insider info 😉

No problem. I love talking with people who love Disney! And being in Florida, people seem to forget that there is actually a working creative film studio in Burbank…the mothership as we used to call it!

Just found this page…and the timing is perfect. I’m going on the D23 Studio Tour this Saturday (Feb. 5, 2011) and this is a great primer on what to expect. Thanks so much for posting!

This report had so many mind blowing moments. It’s simply unbelievable to me that they don’t do something special with Walt’s office. In addition, I am a moving image archiving student and would kill to get into that archive!

I know—can you imagine what stuff must be in there? I guess the reason they don’t preserve the actual room that Walt’s office was in (just the furnishings) is that the public wouldn’t be able to see it, so it’d just be a little studio-lot museum. But… maybe that wouldn’t be so bad. D23 could hold an amazing event there!

Stephen Joseph

I believe you to be a die hard fan or fanatic and I don’t mean that in a derogatory manner. I do however have some non biased questions, I say non biased because the questions I have were not formed because I already have a pre-determined opinion or idea of what the true answer should or has to be. Did Walt have a dark side that the public didn’t see? Did Walt actually use Communist infiltration as an excuse for the strike of his employees after they moved to the Burbank Studios instead of just revealing that he was slave driving boss instead of the family friendly “Uncle Walt” that he led the outside public to believe? Lastly, did Walt really have a mental break down (i.e. washing his hands 30 times in an hour) because of the 8 week strike and have to be sent away to South America while Roy Disney settled the employee strike within 24 hours? I ask you these questions because I hope you know more than me and especially the “Behind the Scenes” esq. Videos/propaganda that I have researched on YouTube, Documentaries and other modern media avenues. Again, I stress the fact that I am NOT trying to be a dick, I’m just merely trying to get to the Truth, emphasis on the capital “T.” Thanks in advance for your reply.

I am not an expert on the subject of Walt’s personal life, and all my conclusions have been drawn from official and authorized sources. You may want to read Neal Gabler’s biography Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination for a more unvarnished account of his life.

Personally, I think that if there were a really dark side to Walt Disney, there’s no way the Disney Company—which can barely create a functioning web site—would be able to suppress information about it. Of course he wasn’t a saint, and yes he may have done or said things that don’t fit with the “Uncle Walt” image many fans cling to, but my feeling is that it was at the same level that any of us do and nothing sinister.

Text description provided by the architects. The main design idea was to create a space with a hint of Hollywood Studios «Golden era» pavilions atmosphere (opened century old metal columns, arched concrete ceilings, aged ceramic tiles and brick walls, etc.), mixed with high technologies.

Developers managed to place at new office of the company two independent spaces – working office and a guest zone with a cinema hall. Placing of the last became one of the main difficulties of the project. To create a high-grade cinema hall in office building, it was required to organize qualitative sound Dolby Stereo which would be not audible outside. UNK PROJECT together with Janson + Tsai Design Associates have found the decision of this problem, having cleaned in internal volume rigid joints of walls, a floor and a ceiling. All connections "swimming", and it excludes vibration transfer. Also we had to follow different fire safety regulations for office area and cinema zone.

Finally this cinema hall became the semantic center of the office also due to its design. Outside it looks like a white alien artifact in the middle of the loft. Only few glass partitions join it – so you always can see it from every side of the office.

Sail boats. Sailing boats cover any sail-powered craft, some won't have an engine at all, while others will have a powerful engine and the sails will just be an afterthought. A Sail Keelboat is a boat with a sail as the primary propulsion and an integrated keel, which is a fin-shaped, weighted element located beneath the hull of a boat. The keel provides stability and helps the boat cut efficiently through waves and wind, allowing for faster and easier sailing. Sail keelboats are usually used for leisure and recreation.

The Southerly 42 RST offers 2.72 metres' draught with the keel down enabling plenty of sail area and good overall performance. A step change came at the end of the 1990s, with introduction of the Rob Humphreys designed Southerly 110. This had a softer, more rounded pilot house design, but the most important changes were below the waterline.
