Forgotten Roads

China motorcycle tour destinations.

Tibet is an autonomous region of China, on the Tibetan Plateau on the northern side of the Himalayas. It is known worldwide as “ The Roof of the World ” for its towering peaks, including Mt. Everest which it shares with Nepal. The  capital Lhasa is the site of hilltop Potala Palace, once the Dalai Lama’s winter home. Also Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s spiritual heart, revered for its golden statue of the young Buddha.

Shangri-La or Xianggelila, is a city in Northwestern Yunnan Province, People’s Republic of China. It is administered by the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, bordering Sichuan to the northwest, north, and east. The region is mountainous, beautiful and rugged and is home to a number of ethnic groups.

Forgotten Roads to Lijiang

Lijiang is a city in the northwest part of China’s Yunnan province. On a major trade route it was a commercial center in the 1300s. The old town features cobblestone streets, canals and Central Market Square with shops and restaurants. The Black Dragon Pool has spectacular views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain range

The Heritage Trail to Xian

Xi’an is a large city and capital of Shaanxi Province in central China. Once known as Chang’an (Eternal Peace), it marks the Silk Road’s eastern end and was home to the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang dynasties’ ruling houses. At archaeological sites in Xi’an’s surrounding plains are the famed Bingmayong (Terra Cotta Army), thousands of life-size, hand-molded figures buried with China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

'Like Never Before'

Riding in china-tibet.

Crossing the border from Laos you initially still ride in the tropics. Roads are in good shape and many are newly built.

As we head north the mountains get higher and the roads have more curves. Each day we gain altitude and before you know it you are riding at +3’500 meters on the Tibetan plateau.

Here the landscapes are magnificent, with huge open spaces, high snow-covered mountains, pristine lakes, and deep valleys. The riding is also about the journey!

Scenery and Culture

China is vast. Off-the-scale massive. Wildly differing dialects and climates with topographical extremes it’s like several different countries rolled into one. Take your pick from the bazaars of Kashgar, a journey along the dusty Silk Road, or spending the night at Everest Base Camp Lhasa (the capital on the roof of the world).

Three decades of round-the-clock development make some parts of the country completely unrecognizable from their more humble beginnings. Serve it all up according to taste: collapsing sections of the Great Wall, temple-topped mountains, villages that time forgot, languorous water towns, sublime Buddhist grottoes, and ancient desert forts. China’s diversity is second to none. Note that number four means bad luck and number eight good luck, once you are in China, the meaning of this will become clear.

Hospitality and FOOD EXPERIENCE

In China, there are very different concepts of personal space than those in the West. People will stand closer to you, sit closer to you and walk-in closer proximity to you than in the West.

The word “friend” is used much more liberally in China than in the West. On the first meeting Chinese will often refer to someone as their “friend” if they wish the relationship to develop, or something beneficial to come out of the acquaintance. In other words, expect to make many friends while in China.

The Chinese live to eat, and with 1.4 billion food-loving people to feed, coupled with vast geographic and cultural variations in a huge land, the flavor profile, and ingredients used in the food change drastically depending on which region you visit. Overall most Chinese food is eaten with rice or noodles and consists of vegetables and meats that are cooked quickly at high temperatures. Tea originated in China and is often enjoyed plain with no sugar or milk added.

In China, we use clean and comfortable international business hotels in the cities and charming boutique hotels in the countryside. All with leisure facilities.

VISA FOR TIBET (CHINA) First of all, please note that today it is irrelevant whether you refer to China. To facilitate the issuance of visas through a Chinese Embassy or Permanent Mission, it is best if persons with pre-booked travel arrangements submit along with their visa application a so-called “Visa Confirmation Letter” from the tour operator in Bejing responsible for the tour arrangements. We shall obtain the visa confirmation letter and forward it to you. The confirmation letter implies that the tour operator is responsible for you during your entire stay in China and eliminates further questioning by the Chinese Embassy. Please note that Chinese Embassies generally do not consider the exact travel dates but simply stamp visas valid for 3 months and entitling the holder to one single entry into China within these 3 months. Therefore, we will forward to you the visa confirmation letter approximately 1 ½ months before the start of the tour to ensure that the validity of your visa will extend beyond the length of your stay in China. Once you have received your visa confirmation letter, you should contact the nearest Chinese Embassy or Permanent Mission to obtain visa application forms, fill in the visa application forms in triplicate, attach one passport photo to each copy of the application form, and enclose a printout copy of the visa confirmation letter with the application. Please refer to the list of diplomatic missions of China for a list of all Chinese Embassies, Permanent Missions, and Consulate Generals.

REGISTRATION / DEPOSIT Due to the cumbersome logistics involved with obtaining all necessary permits and border formalities, we must impose the following conditions for registration of your participation in the tour:

• The deadline for the latest registrations is two months before the tour starts • Confirmation of your participation in the tour will only be confirmed against the payment of a 10% deposit (down payment) of the total tour price • First come – first served: the date of receipt of your deposit (down payment) will determine whose participation will be confirmed first. We will not confirm participation in the tour before receipt of your deposit.

We shall guarantee the departure of the tour with a minimum of 6 bikers and shall limit the maximum size of the group to no more than 15 bikes.

With your registration for the tour, we also need the following personal data from you:

Family Name(s) – as per passport: First Name(s) – as per passport: Passport Number: Nationality: Date of Birth: Passport Issue Date: Passport Issue Place: Passport Expiry Date:

Please note that to participate in this tour, you must have a valid international driver’s license for motorcycles over 500cc.

For inquiries or in case of any uncertainties, please contact us at [email protected]

FULL PREPAYMENT Because we shall have to fully prepay all suppliers far in advance, we require your full prepayment of the tour (minus the deposit) by the latest two months before the tour starts.

CANCELLATION FEES Please note that the following cancellation fees apply in the case that you are obliged to cancel the reservations for the tour at the last minute:

If cancellation is received: Fee (in % of the total tour price) 60 Days to 15 Days 30% of the Tour cost 30 Days to 8 Days 50% of the Tour cost 14 Days or less 100% of the Tour cost

We strongly recommend that you purchase individualized travel and/or medical insurance from any insurance company in your home market to prevent having to incur any unexpected medical or travel expenses.

INSURANCE – CHINA The participant carries full risk in case of an accident, regardless of whether the accident is caused by the tour participant or by a third party. Please bear also in mind that in the case of an accident, the adversary will most likely not be carrying any insurance coverage at all. Hence, the tour participant carries the maximum risk of 6,000 US$ in case of total damage to his/her motorcycle.

OPTIONAL Against the surcharge of 300 US$, we offer limited comprehensive insurance cover with a maximum liability/participation of 1.000 US$ (instead of 6,000 US$) for the participant in case of damage sustained to his/her motorcycle. For minor damage, we will collect the costs for repair at the end of the tour as it is easier to handle such minor cases on the spot. Tour participants who opt for a fully comprehensive insurance cover will also have to deposit 1.500 US$ in cash or credit card at the beginning of the tour.

It is also important to know that the participant is liable for damage caused to his/her motorcycle in the case of an accident caused by a third person. Third-party insurance in China generally only covers bodily harm caused to the third party and does not cover damage caused to the vehicle of a third party.

CHINA CURRENCY / CREDIT CARDS ATMs are not yet widespread in China, and only major hotels and sometimes upcountry accept the most common credit cards such as American Express and Visa. In many places, however, credit cards will not be accepted at all. Hence, it is useful to bring cash in US Dollars, preferably also in small denominations as many shops upcountry cannot easily provide change for a 100-dollar bill. You may also want to change some foreign currency into Chinese Renminbi (Yuan) as the Chinese only trade in their currency. When paying for something small with US Dollars, the change will most likely be rendered in the Chinese Renminbi (Yuan). This change, in turn, can be used again for buying a drink or for small tips, etc. Bringing traveler cheques is useless as only the Chinese Investment, and Commercial Bank (CICB) or the Chinese Foreign Trade Bank (CFTB) in Bejing would trade in these through cumbersome and time-consuming procedures. However, it is now possible to change US Dollars and even euros into local currency at most airports and many other places. We recommend changing some Chinese Renminbi (Yuan) already in your home country.

How to Transit China With Your Own Motorcycle

This guide explains what you need to know about transiting through China with your own motorcycle…

Motorcycle Travel China

Jah is a China motorcycle travel expert and runs Ride China

Motorcycle Transit Through China

China is a cultural treasure. It is the third largest country at nearly 9.6 million square kilometres and has over 5,000 years of recorded history. So, travelling here is like visiting another world.

Landscapes such as the Three Parallel Rivers, Silk Road, Tibet and Yunnan spread across the land and are peppered with vestiges of ancient Chinese culture including the Great Wall, Forbidden City, X’ian’s Terracotta Army and Tiananmen Square.

China is a must travel destination – and for an adventurer, the best way to do that is on a motorcycle.

However, entering China with a foreign plated motorcycle can be tricky. In fact, it’s complicated and requires a lot of paperwork, planning, time and you must be accompanied by a licenced guide.

Some riders may wish to simply transit through China as quickly as possible due to the associated costs, and some might like to extend their time here and explore more by taking on a longer transit route and visiting some of the places mentioned above.

Either way, we put together this guide to help explain the requirements for transiting through China on your own motorcycle.

Transiting China

Can you transit china on a motorcycle.

First, let’s cover some basic information on transiting China with a motorcycle. You can certainly ride your own motorcycle (or drive your own car or vehicle) through China using over a dozen international borders. However, you can not freely do so. It’s not as easy as turning up at the border with your passport and paying for a temporary import.

To take your vehicle through China you must have a licenced guide accompany you and a registered company will need to sort out all of the paperwork for you in advance.

Which borders can you transit China through?

China is the largest Country in Asia and China is bordered by 14 countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Vietnam.

Why would you need to transit China?

You may need to travel across China from one of the above countries to the other in order to complete your route or trip. This is especially important for overland motorcycle travellers. Or, you may wish to explore China on your bike, in which case you’ll want to take on a longer transit route or join an organised tour.

What are the difficulties in transiting China?

Paperwork is the biggest hurdle and is complicated. So you will need to hire a travel agent to handle the permits, customs papers and driver’s license. You also need a guide to accompany you. Luckily, there are some fantastic travel companies out there specialising in motorcycle transits who will handle all of this for you. Don’t be put off, with the right company, travelling through China on your bike will be fun, easy and an incredible experience.

Transit process

To travel through China with your own motorcycle, you will need to hire a registered travel company to sort your paperwork out. The paperwork includes a self-driving permit, customs broker service, a customs deposit, driver’s licence and a temporary number plate. There may be additional paperwork requirements too dependent on you, your route and motorcycle.

Paperwork preparation

It takes around 60 working days to prepare all your permits, temporary plates and driving licenses. So, if you’re considering transiting through China, you will need to start the ball rolling as early as possible.

You will also need a guide from a registered company. A guide must accompany your entire journey throughout China. You might find some agents offer the paperwork and say you can travel without a guide, but this is against the regulations laid out by the China Culture and Tourism Bureau.

A guide must be assigned to you or your group. It’s not worth the risk either, especially as you could end up in a traffic accident, or get caught at a check point or random police check. Without a guide you’ll face a hefty fine and deportation.

Don’t worry, guides are not there to spy on you. They’re professionals who know you want to explore and enjoy your time in China. They can either be on motorcycles up front leading the way or at the rear in a support vehicle. It’s up to you.

Transit routes

The most popular route for overland motorcycle travellers transiting China is from Kyrgyzstan to Laos. It’s an easy gateway from Central Asia to Southeast Asia – and an awesome ride. This is because it cuts out the tricky and expensive ride through Myanmar – which is also still currently closed.

Kyrgyzstan to Pakistan is also a very popular transit route. It takes around five days and is relatively cheaper than the longer routes, but you don’t get to see much of China.

There are a number of other routes you can take such as Kyrgyzstan to Nepal, Mongolia to Laos and Laos to Kyrgyzstan or Mongolia.

It is expensive to transit through China because of the amount of paperwork needed and the guide that must accompany you the entire way. If you take this transit route solo with a guide it will be very expensive as you will also need to pay for brokering at borders, customs deposits etc on your own. So it makes sense to transit in a group and split the costs.

Transiting China in a group

Group travel will greatly reduce the cost as common costs will be shared. However, it is possible to travel through China solo or with a small group if you prefer – it all depends on your budget and travel style.

Joining a group can be done in a number of different ways. You can join Facebook groups specifically set up for it, online forums, scour the web or ask around in other Facebook groups to see if anyone is going that way.

You may already have your own small group, or ask the motorcycle tour company you’re going to be using to transit if they have an existing scheduled group you could join.

When to transit China

China has a continental climate and latitude spanning nearly 50 degrees. Much of the landmass is situated in the temperate zone, with the tropical and subtropical zones to the south, and reaching the Frigid Zone in the north, so temperatures differ strikingly across the country.

The ideal months to travel in China would be from March to November, these months are Spring, Summer and Autumn which are good for most parts of China.

Due to varied altitudes and latitudes of different destinations, there are some general weather guidelines to different regions.

Transit companies

The company you go with must be a registered international travel company with a deposited bond to the China Tourism Bureau and Chinese Customs. Search around for companies with a lot of experience with foreign overland motorcycle travellers and an excellent reputation because your money, time, motorcycle and trip are on the line.

请问,我是中国人,在新加坡工作,我想驾驶新加坡摩托车回中国,请问可行吗?费用需要多少?可以在国内待多久?谢谢您 TRANSLATED: Excuse me, I am Chinese and work in Singapore. I want to drive a Singaporean motorcycle back to China. Is it possible? How much does it cost? How long can I stay in the country? Thank you

Hi Shenjungang, please contact Jah directly via email. His email address is listed in this article – he may be able to help you with this. Thanks and best of luck, Andy

Yeah I found this on youtube they done it a few months back and say strait away it’s not worth it out of all the countries they have done China was the worst. And expensive and a waist of time, even though had another country near there who also had to have guides but that was not to bad on price plus just give a location then goodbye see you there guide is gone just meat at each point. But then to China it was horibal

Hi Andr, thanks for your comment. China requires foreign vehicles to be accompanied by a professional and registered guide. So, this article has been written to help overland travellers who wish to transit China to another country. So, the journey is usually quick so as to keep costs down. It’s not designed to be a sightseeing tour. But China is an incredible country with a lot to offer, to better see it, it’s worth renting a Chinese bike or joining an actual tour there to properly experience the country and it would be a completely different trip! Cheers! Andy

China Motorcycle Tour

Table of Contents

For many travellers, motorcycles serve as an ideal way to explore the world, offering many of the same benefits as a car, while being smaller, easier to park and potentially more fun to ride. However, China presents some significant problems when it comes to legally entering the country with a motorcycle and riding your bike in certain cities.

In fact, China has some of the most stringent rules and laws related to foreign-registered motorbikes you are likely to encounter anywhere in the world. For this reason, you cannot simply turn up at the border with your motorcycle and expect to gain entry, and it can be beneficial to work with a professional China motorcycle tour company.

Here, we take a more in-depth look at the practicalities, requirements and possible routes for a China motorbike tour.

Acquiring a Chinese Motorcycle Licence

If you are interested in participating in a China motorcycle tour, and you intend to ride a fuel-powered motorcycle, you will almost certainly need to acquire a Chinese licence. Unfortunately, unlike many other countries, China does not allow you to simply convert an international licence and legally ride your bike. Instead, you will need to go through the process of acquiring a temporary Chinese licence, which must last the duration of your trip.

Assuming you hold a valid licence from your own country, it is likely you will be able to bypass the practical test. However, you might need to complete a theory test with a score of at least 90 percent and you may also be required to complete some basic medical tests, including an eye test, in order to be approved.

Crucially, this process must be completed before entering the country on your motorcycle. Fortunately, the process has become easier in recent years and major cities like Beijing and Shanghai will now allow you to complete the theory test in English. With that being said, some smaller towns and cities only offer the test in Chinese.

In many cases, it is worth contacting a professional tour company with experience arranging motorbike tours. Such a company may be able to help with some of the logistics, as well as the paperwork involved in acquiring your licence. Arranging a tour as part of a group can also be a good way to split certain costs, although it may restrict your freedom.

From a legal standpoint, many electric bikes and electric scooters are treated like bicycles in China, meaning you may not require a license to ride one. This does represent a potential loophole in some instances, but it is also important to note that several cities in China now completely ban e-bikes, so your tour could be severely restricted.

Finally, you will also need to check the individual rules for each province you plan to enter as part of your China motorbike tour. Some provinces may require you to obtain additional permits or complete further paperwork.

Vehicle Approval and Other Requirements

One of the most important decisions you will need to make is related to the motorcycle you will use for your tour. If you plan to use your own bike, you will need to arrange to have temporary Chinese number plates fitted, and you will need to supply up-to-date MOT papers, an official translation, and photographs of your bike from all angles.

Upon entry to the country, your vehicle’s value will also be estimated by Chinese officials and you will be required to leave a deposit. This deposit will then be refunded when you leave China at the end of your tour.

As previously stated, some electric bikes and less powerful bikes may be exempt from some of these requirements. A general rule of thumb is that vehicles that weigh 20 kg (44 lbS) or more and/or have a top speed of more than 30 km/h will require a Chinese motorcycle licence. Smaller and slower bikes will usually be treated as bicycles.

One potential alternative is to either buy a bike once you are in China, or hire a bike. However, both of these options also present significant hurdles in terms of paperwork and some bike hire companies may refuse you regardless.

In addition, you and everyone else participating in your China motorbike tour will need a valid passport and visa, as well as insurance that specifically covers China. The paperwork involved can take as long as three months, so yaou will need to start long before you begin your tour and you may need to fly in and out of the country in advance.

Possible Tour Routes and Border Crossings

It is vital to plan out your motorcycle tour in advance, including both your entry point and your exit point. China is accessible from a number of neighbouring countries, but some of the most common border crossing points include the city of Erenhot, which is close to the border of Mongolia, Karakoram Highway / China National Highway 314, which links Pakistan to China, and Mengla County, in the Yunnan Province, which is accessible via Laos.

Tibet also represents an interesting option for either entering or exiting China, but it has additional strict rules about foreign vehicles, and you will need to get hold of a Tibet travel permit.

Generally, it makes sense to enter the country from one location and leave via another. So, for example, a motorcycle tour could start in Mengla County in the south of China, pass through several cities and/or provinces and then leave via Erenhot in the north. The alternative is to leave via the same border crossing as you enter, which might reduce some of the paperwork, but also likely means you will see less of the country on your tour.

China is a large country and crossing from one side to the other, while giving yourself time to take in the surroundings and actually do things, is going to take several weeks. Be clear on your route ahead of time, be clear on the permits and other documentation you need, and have a clear tour plan to present to officials.

Traffic Rules and Motorcycle Restrictions

While many of the surrounding countries drive on the left side of the road, traffic in mainland China drives on the right, so you will need to keep this in mind, especially when crossing the border. Although motorbikes are a common sight in China, there are a number of restrictions that you will need to be mindful of too.

For the most part, motorcycles are not permitted on freeways, although there may be some exceptions to this. Several of the major cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, also impose restrictions on downtown areas, or on motorcycles that are not registered within the city. There may, therefore, be certain instances where you need to park your motorbike in a permitted area away from the city centre and then travel in via public transport or on foot.

Traffic in China can be erratic and unpredictable, especially for those who are not used to it, and this poses a particular hazard for bikers. It is important to pay attention at all times, to keep to the speed limits and to be prepared for the fact that traffic may behave in ways that will seem out of the ordinary to you.
