CHINA-TIBET MOTORCYCLE TOURS

'Like Never Before'

Riding in china-tibet.

Crossing the border from Laos you initially still ride in the tropics. Roads are in good shape and many are newly built.

As we head north the mountains get higher and the roads have more curves. Each day we gain altitude and before you know it you are riding at +3’500 meters on the Tibetan plateau.

Here the landscapes are magnificent, with huge open spaces, high snow-covered mountains, pristine lakes, and deep valleys. The riding is also about the journey!

Scenery and Culture

China is vast. Off-the-scale massive. Wildly differing dialects and climates with topographical extremes it’s like several different countries rolled into one. Take your pick from the bazaars of Kashgar, a journey along the dusty Silk Road, or spending the night at Everest Base Camp Lhasa (the capital on the roof of the world).

Three decades of round-the-clock development make some parts of the country completely unrecognizable from their more humble beginnings. Serve it all up according to taste: collapsing sections of the Great Wall, temple-topped mountains, villages that time forgot, languorous water towns, sublime Buddhist grottoes, and ancient desert forts. China’s diversity is second to none. Note that number four means bad luck and number eight good luck, once you are in China, the meaning of this will become clear.

Hospitality and FOOD EXPERIENCE

In China, there are very different concepts of personal space than those in the West. People will stand closer to you, sit closer to you and walk-in closer proximity to you than in the West.

The word “friend” is used much more liberally in China than in the West. On the first meeting Chinese will often refer to someone as their “friend” if they wish the relationship to develop, or something beneficial to come out of the acquaintance. In other words, expect to make many friends while in China.

The Chinese live to eat, and with 1.4 billion food-loving people to feed, coupled with vast geographic and cultural variations in a huge land, the flavor profile, and ingredients used in the food change drastically depending on which region you visit. Overall most Chinese food is eaten with rice or noodles and consists of vegetables and meats that are cooked quickly at high temperatures. Tea originated in China and is often enjoyed plain with no sugar or milk added.

In China, we use clean and comfortable international business hotels in the cities and charming boutique hotels in the countryside. All with leisure facilities.

China motorcycle tour destinations.

Tibet is an autonomous region of China, on the Tibetan Plateau on the northern side of the Himalayas. It is known worldwide as “ The Roof of the World ” for its towering peaks, including Mt. Everest which it shares with Nepal. The  capital Lhasa is the site of hilltop Potala Palace, once the Dalai Lama’s winter home. Also Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s spiritual heart, revered for its golden statue of the young Buddha.

Shangri-La or Xianggelila, is a city in Northwestern Yunnan Province, People’s Republic of China. It is administered by the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, bordering Sichuan to the northwest, north, and east. The region is mountainous, beautiful and rugged and is home to a number of ethnic groups.

Forgotten Roads to Lijiang

Lijiang is a city in the northwest part of China’s Yunnan province. On a major trade route it was a commercial center in the 1300s. The old town features cobblestone streets, canals and Central Market Square with shops and restaurants. The Black Dragon Pool has spectacular views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain range

The Heritage Trail to Xian

Xi’an is a large city and capital of Shaanxi Province in central China. Once known as Chang’an (Eternal Peace), it marks the Silk Road’s eastern end and was home to the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang dynasties’ ruling houses. At archaeological sites in Xi’an’s surrounding plains are the famed Bingmayong (Terra Cotta Army), thousands of life-size, hand-molded figures buried with China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

VISA FOR TIBET (CHINA) First of all, please note that today it is irrelevant whether you refer to China. To facilitate the issuance of visas through a Chinese Embassy or Permanent Mission, it is best if persons with pre-booked travel arrangements submit along with their visa application a so-called “Visa Confirmation Letter” from the tour operator in Bejing responsible for the tour arrangements. We shall obtain the visa confirmation letter and forward it to you. The confirmation letter implies that the tour operator is responsible for you during your entire stay in China and eliminates further questioning by the Chinese Embassy. Please note that Chinese Embassies generally do not consider the exact travel dates but simply stamp visas valid for 3 months and entitling the holder to one single entry into China within these 3 months. Therefore, we will forward to you the visa confirmation letter approximately 1 ½ months before the start of the tour to ensure that the validity of your visa will extend beyond the length of your stay in China. Once you have received your visa confirmation letter, you should contact the nearest Chinese Embassy or Permanent Mission to obtain visa application forms, fill in the visa application forms in triplicate, attach one passport photo to each copy of the application form, and enclose a printout copy of the visa confirmation letter with the application. Please refer to the list of diplomatic missions of China for a list of all Chinese Embassies, Permanent Missions, and Consulate Generals.

REGISTRATION / DEPOSIT Due to the cumbersome logistics involved with obtaining all necessary permits and border formalities, we must impose the following conditions for registration of your participation in the tour:

• The deadline for the latest registrations is two months before the tour starts • Confirmation of your participation in the tour will only be confirmed against the payment of a 10% deposit (down payment) of the total tour price • First come – first served: the date of receipt of your deposit (down payment) will determine whose participation will be confirmed first. We will not confirm participation in the tour before receipt of your deposit.

We shall guarantee the departure of the tour with a minimum of 6 bikers and shall limit the maximum size of the group to no more than 15 bikes.

With your registration for the tour, we also need the following personal data from you:

Family Name(s) – as per passport: First Name(s) – as per passport: Passport Number: Nationality: Date of Birth: Passport Issue Date: Passport Issue Place: Passport Expiry Date:

Please note that to participate in this tour, you must have a valid international driver’s license for motorcycles over 500cc.

For inquiries or in case of any uncertainties, please contact us at [email protected]

FULL PREPAYMENT Because we shall have to fully prepay all suppliers far in advance, we require your full prepayment of the tour (minus the deposit) by the latest two months before the tour starts.

CANCELLATION FEES Please note that the following cancellation fees apply in the case that you are obliged to cancel the reservations for the tour at the last minute:

If cancellation is received: Fee (in % of the total tour price) 60 Days to 15 Days 30% of the Tour cost 30 Days to 8 Days 50% of the Tour cost 14 Days or less 100% of the Tour cost

We strongly recommend that you purchase individualized travel and/or medical insurance from any insurance company in your home market to prevent having to incur any unexpected medical or travel expenses.

INSURANCE – CHINA The participant carries full risk in case of an accident, regardless of whether the accident is caused by the tour participant or by a third party. Please bear also in mind that in the case of an accident, the adversary will most likely not be carrying any insurance coverage at all. Hence, the tour participant carries the maximum risk of 6,000 US$ in case of total damage to his/her motorcycle.

OPTIONAL Against the surcharge of 300 US$, we offer limited comprehensive insurance cover with a maximum liability/participation of 1.000 US$ (instead of 6,000 US$) for the participant in case of damage sustained to his/her motorcycle. For minor damage, we will collect the costs for repair at the end of the tour as it is easier to handle such minor cases on the spot. Tour participants who opt for a fully comprehensive insurance cover will also have to deposit 1.500 US$ in cash or credit card at the beginning of the tour.

It is also important to know that the participant is liable for damage caused to his/her motorcycle in the case of an accident caused by a third person. Third-party insurance in China generally only covers bodily harm caused to the third party and does not cover damage caused to the vehicle of a third party.

CHINA CURRENCY / CREDIT CARDS ATMs are not yet widespread in China, and only major hotels and sometimes upcountry accept the most common credit cards such as American Express and Visa. In many places, however, credit cards will not be accepted at all. Hence, it is useful to bring cash in US Dollars, preferably also in small denominations as many shops upcountry cannot easily provide change for a 100-dollar bill. You may also want to change some foreign currency into Chinese Renminbi (Yuan) as the Chinese only trade in their currency. When paying for something small with US Dollars, the change will most likely be rendered in the Chinese Renminbi (Yuan). This change, in turn, can be used again for buying a drink or for small tips, etc. Bringing traveler cheques is useless as only the Chinese Investment, and Commercial Bank (CICB) or the Chinese Foreign Trade Bank (CFTB) in Bejing would trade in these through cumbersome and time-consuming procedures. However, it is now possible to change US Dollars and even euros into local currency at most airports and many other places. We recommend changing some Chinese Renminbi (Yuan) already in your home country.

Adventure Motorcycling Tour in China

◆ Introduction for China Motorcycling Tour by NAVO

Among the few professional tourism companies in China, NAVO runs adventurous tour and featured tour. We set up our business including motorcycling since 1993.

Among these adventure tours, motorcycling tour and self-driving tour and was developing as two of the most popular and classical activities of NAVO Tour. As one of the first travel companies organizing motorcycling tours and self-driving tours for foreign travelers, NAVO has been one of the most experienced and professional adventure tour companies in China in this field.

Our first self-driving group was from Germany. They drove their own vehicles through China in 1994. https://www.navo-tour.com/en/drive-own-vehicle/

Our first motorcycling group was also from Germany in 2004. https://www.navo-tour.com/en/motorcycling-tour/

With the assistance of NAVO, travelers can travel in China by their own private motorcycles, no matter what kind of motorcycle you use, two-wheeled, three-wheeled or four-wheeled motorcycle, we can help with the paperwork, permits and driver license processing etc. Moreover, a foreign-language-speaking tour guide from NAVO will escort you to during your motorcycling tour in China. As for some groups that ask for a leading car, NAVO will send the most hand-picked vehicle to serve the groups in line with their requirements. It is all up to the request of our clients.

◆NAVO Basic rules of organizing motorcycling tours

1. Tour guide The same as self-driving tours, based on the related laws and regulations of China, a tour guide is also required to accompany motorcycle group during the whole trip in China. 2. Local escort vehicle Different from self-driving groups, it is very difficult for motorcycle groups to offer a spare seat for our tour guide. So, in principle, we will arrange an escort car to carry the guide and assist the group. 3. Foreign escorting vehicle For big motorcycling groups, we suggest you to use your own escort vehicle. For small groups or solo riders, we suggest you to try to team up with other self-driving groups which are able to offer a spare seat for the guide, you can also share some costs with each other.

◆NAVO Basic steps of organizing motorcycling tours

If you have already understood and agreed with the above basic rules for foreign self-driving tour in China, it is great for NAVO to start to discuss and organize your foreign vehicle self-driving tour in China. Please note the basic steps as follow:

1. Contact NAVO and make out a practical itinerary. We hope you could contact NAVO as early as possible, then confirm some basic information about your self-driving trip in China, includes but not limited in tour duration, entry and exit ports/dates, group size, and some additional service for hotel reservation etc.; As mentioned above, please contact NAVO 2-3 months in advance before you arrive at China border.

2. Trip quotation and booking We will provide quotation accordingly, please pay 30%-50% as the booking deposit if you would like to reserve your trip with NAVO.

3. Paperwork preparation and processing While we received your deposit payment we will provide you the document list. Please send us all necessary documents follow the list then we will start to process the related paperwork. As mentioned before, the paperwork takes 1-2 months to be finished (depends on your travel route), so please be sure you have enough time to prepare all the documents which could send all documents to us at least 1-2 months in advance.

4. China entry process Please enter China as per the confirmed date. NAVO’s tour guide will meet you at the border on time and assist you to accomplish the border procedures accordingly.

FAQs on China Motorcycle Rentals and Tours

No, sorry. Mad or Nomad do not offer any rentals, tours or services. Please contact the companies listed on this page directly.

This page displays motorcycle rental and tour companies from around the world. We do a lot of research into these companies before adding them and speak to the managers and owners. Many of the companies we have also used in the past or have met the owners while travelling.

While we have collected them all together in one place for your ease, we take no responsibility in your business with them. We’re simply showcasing companies in one easy-to-use place and are not involved with your dealings with them. Any business you have with these companies is at your own risk. We will not be held liable or responsible in any way.

The best time to go on a motorcycle tour in China is Autumn and Spring.

As China is such a huge country and you have the option of also riding in Tibet, tour prices can vary dramatically – especially considering you need a guide to accompany you. Contact the companies listed on this page directly for more info.

Take a video on your phone of the entire bike, do a walk around and film the condition of the chain, fairings, tyres, any bumps, dents and scratches. By doing so, you can’t get caught out and blamed for something you didn’t do when you return it.

Check the wheel bearings, chain, oil, coolant, brakes, clutch and that the handlebars are straight. Tyres need a decent amount of tread and should be suitable for the terrain you’re riding in. Take it for a short test ride and don’t feel pressured or rushed. Go with your gut and if there’s anything that catches your eye, speak to the owners immediately.

This is down to personal preference, where you’re riding and what’s available. If you’re renting or joining a motorcycle tour in the States and you’re going to be primarily on road, then you may want to opt for a big touring bike. If you’re headed to rural or mountainous countries and are going off-road in Central Asia for example, then go for a mid-weight single-cylinder.

We usually find lighter and cheaper rental bikes are better because they’re less stress, you don’t have to worry about dropping them all the time, are easier to fix and more fun.

For more info on choosing the right motorcycle for your trip, have a look at the below guide and also check out the adventure bikes page too.

  • How to Choose Your Adventure Motorcycle
  • Adventure Motorcycle Guides

We recommend lightweight and comfortable gear suitable for the climate you’re travelling in. If you’re heading to a particularly cold place, then go for Gore-Tex pro laminate.

But, the best all-round option is ventilated, light and comfy adventure bike gear. Take the thermal and waterproof liners out and leave them at home. Take a cheap pair of waterproof throwovers and a compressible down jacket that can be stuffed into a small bag. You can use both items as layering if it’s cold and rainy and they double up when off the bike and will reduce the amount of gear you have to take with you in your luggage.

It’s always better to take your own bike gear over renting or using kit from the rental company. You know your own stuff fits, works and is comfortable – especially your helmet. The last thing you want is to get a few days into your trip and get a headache from a tight lid.

Check out our riding gear article for more info on how to choose the right clothing and the guides section for our recommended kit.

  • How to Choose Your Adventure Riding Gear
  • Adventure Bike Riding Gear Guides

Contact the rental or tour company and ask what luggage the bike comes with. Your bike might come with soft bags, hard boxes, a top box or nothing at all.

You can often leave the gear you don’t want to take with you on the trip at the rental or tour company’s headquarters. So you can travel on a plane with a larger kit bag and just take the bag and gear you need on the bike.

The type of luggage you need depends on the type of trip you’re on, how much off-roading you’re doing and how long you’re going for.

A good option is to go for a waterproof duffle bag and a pair of Rok Straps as this type of luggage setup can be fastened to any bike’s pillion seat and you don’t need racks. And take an additional small and light rucksack for your important gear (camera, passport etc) so you don’t have to worry about it when off the bike.

For more info on choosing your motorcycle luggage, check out our guide page below.

READ MORE: Adventure Bike Luggage Guides

Companies may offer motorcycle insurance as an optional extra, include it in the price or not offer it at all. This again depends on the country you’re riding in.

It’s worth getting insurance if you can and ask what the excess is as you will usually be liable for damage to the bike.

Motorcycle insurance is separate from personal travel insurance. This is incredibly important and you need to be very careful when choosing your personal insurance policy because the fine print often won’t cover you for bikes over 125cc, renting, touring or using a bike as your main mode of transport.

Check out our Admin section as you’ll find detailed guides on personal insurance, paperwork and safety on the road.
