15 Spontaneous Day Trips That Are Less Than 3 Hours Away From Pittsburgh

Admittedly, Pittsburgh is a great city with a lot of things to do — I mean it didn't get named the second best city in America for nothing. But sometimes you just need to get away from the usual and explore the world outside of your comfort zone. 

What's really great about Pittsburgh is that it's so close to the border of West Virginia and Ohio (not to mention both of which have gas and cigarettes at a MUCH cheaper price). While it's true that there are a ton of great places in Pennsylvania, you certainly don't have to contain yourself here. 

So, that's why we've rounded up a list of 15 places to take a spontaneous day trip within a 3-hour drive from Pittsburgh; some places in Ohio, West Virginia, and even New York. I hope you're excited because this list is about to be lit.

Enjoy the beach at Lake Erie, Pennsylvania

Distance: 1 hour, 54 min

When to visit: Year-round

Erie may sound eerie, but it's truly a magical place throughout all of the seasons in the year. It features an adorable amusement/water park, Waldameer Park & Water World, that is open in the summer, and the well-known Presque Isle State Park — our very own beach paradise on Lake Erie, open year-round. 

What makes Presque Isle so great is not only the sandy shoreline and coastal features including a lighthouse, lifeguards, changing rooms, boating and much more, but in the winter season it becomes a winter wonderland. Since the lake is freshwater it sometimes freezes over, and the ground around it becomes blanketed in snow. It's amazing to see it change from a bustling vacation spot to a desolate snow desert during the different times of the year. The town has many places to eat and shop, so whether you're bored in the summer or winter, Erie can be your go-to spot.

Ride the vintage rides at Conneaut Lake Park, Pennsylvania

Distance: 1 hour, 28 min

When to visit: Summer

Make it a point to stop at the Conneaut Lake Park on your way to or from Erie. It's about an hour south of Presque Isle — and a little out of the way — but it's worth the minor detour. This little town was centered around a once-popular amusement park built in the 1890's. The rickety old park has been kept alive and running for over 100 years! It still maintains nearly original features and is open for public enjoyment during the summer months.

Only a few blocks away is the equally exciting must-see Hotel Conneaut, which majestically overlooks the Conneaut Lake and marina. The hotel was built in 1893 as a place to stay while visiting the park and hasn't been updated since what looks like the 70's — giving it a funky retro charm you won't find anywhere else. There are a plethora of haunted hotel tales to be told and if you're feeling particularly skeptical, stay a night in their notoriously most haunted room.

Drive by miles of wine vineyards along Lake Erie in Dunkirk, New York 

Distance: 2 hours, 33 min

When to visit: Summer/fall

If you go a little while north of Erie,  you will come to the town of Dunkirk. Not only is there a cool little boardwalk area, pier, Point Gratiot Park , and another historic Lake Erie lighthouse , there are hundreds of miles of vineyards along the roadways that are truly a site to see, and if your taste buds are craving some local wine, be sure to pop over to the  Liberty Vineyards Winery . 

Explore the waterfalls of Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania 

Distance: 1 hour, 17 min

Ohiopyle is a park known for its beautiful waterfalls and rocky trails that will keep you busy for hours. Most people would argue that the best time to visit the park is in the summer so you can watch the roaring rapids or perhaps do some kayaking, but don't let that deter you from visiting in the offseason. The autumn offers fantastic views of the fall foliage, while the winter features waterfalls frozen dead in their tracks. No matter when you choose to go, Ohiopyle will be nothing short of spectacular. 

Stargaze at the Allegheny National Forest, Pennsylvania

Distance: 1 hour, 57 min

When to visit: Clear nights

The Allegheny National Forest is one of the only places in Pennsylvania with low enough light pollution where you can clearly see the milky way. While that's the best part of this location, you will totally want to check out the numerous trails, woodlands, and rural landscapes throughout the park during the day. 

Take a dip in the crystal clear springs at Mt. Davis, Pennsylvania

Distance: 1 hour, 42 min

Mt. Davis is not only the tallest point in Pennsylvania — it features two crystal-clear springs that people love to go swimming in during the hot summer months. The nicer of the two springs is Big Spring, but it's about a 3-mile hike to reach it. If the springs aren't really your thing, there are miles of trails, camping, and wildlife spotting opportunities all around. 

Get pampered, go to the zoo, and chill at the resort at Oglebay Park, West Virginia 

Distance: 1 hour, 5 min

When to visit: Spring/Summer/Fall

Oglebay is a quaint park near Wheeling, West Virginia that features a zoo, resort/spa, obstacle course, swimming pool, miles of trails, wildlife watching, a lake (often populated by swans, geese, and ducks), boat rentals, dining, events and much more. This is the ultimate all-in-one nature park that will have enough to keep you — and the family — entertained all day. 

Do mountainous activities at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Pennsylvania

Distance: 1 hour  

When to go: Year-round 

Go zip lining, rock wall climbing, mountain bike riding, fishing and more in the summer, or take a horse-drawn sled ride, ski or snowboard down the mountain, ride the ski lift back, and enjoy some hot chocolate by the fireplace at Seven Springs Mountian Resort during the winter. Get schwifty during a hippie music festival at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, Ohio

Distance: 1 hour, 30 min

When to visit:  Spring-Fall

Okay sure, you aren't limited to visiting Nelson Ledges just for a music festival, but it's definitely one of the coolest aspects of the quarry. The park itself is made up of 250 acres of forest, meadows, streams, rock ledges, fishing lakes and the quarry itself. It features 400 campsites, some deep in the woods, some along the quarry, and others in secluded meadows — making it the perfect spot for music festivals. You'll often hear of bands like the Grateful Dead, Badfish, and Mushroomhead headlining the many concerts hosted here, and you'll probably see a lot of decked out, vintage, VW campers.

Experience the simplicity of Amish living in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania

  Distance: 1 hour

A close-knit Amish community calls the local towns of New Wilmington home. Most notably is Volant, a little tourist town full of stores, many of which offer local Amish-made products. Driving the rural streets and touring the downtown shops of Volant will offer a glimpse into the Amish lifestyle as they ride by in buggies, hang their clothes out on the lines, and bale hay by hand while the children play outside for entertainment. 

Get spooked at Beaver Creek State Park, Ohio

Distance: 1 hour, 6 min

This park is not only historic, beautiful, and a great camping site , it has several really cool ghostly legends that supposedly haunt different areas. There are three different spots that paranormal investigators and skeptics alike often go; the placard site where the notorious gangster, Pretty Boy Floyd, was shot dead, the old mill house, and Gretchen's Lock  (all pictured below).

While I won't go into too much detail , the old mill house is supposedly haunted by an old caretaker, the lock which was never finished is supposedly haunted by Gretchen — a little girl who died of malaria while her father was working on the lock (some say she was buried in the lock), and obviously Pretty Boy Floyd himself is said to haunt the area of his death. If you want to explore the park at night I suggest staying at the campsite — or else the rangers may harass you for being at a state park after hours. 

Taste some authentic maple syrup at the yearly Brady's Run Maple Syrup Festival, Pennsylvania 

Distance: 44 min

When to go: Event dates (usually a weekend in April)

Every year for the past 31 years there has been a maple syrup festival at Brady's Run Park, Beaver County, that draws thousands of tourists for an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast featuring maple syrup drained from maple trees at the park. What else is really cool is that during the fall and winter months when you walk along the park trails you will see several trees with buckets and hoses attached to them — maple sap is being collected for the upcoming year's festival. Go oddity exploring in Moundsville, West Virginia

West Virginia is a state with a lot of weird happenings and history — you know, like the legend of Mothman. Unfortunately, most of the Mothman memorabilia is further than 3 hours away, but Moundsville is equally as strange. This town has a bit of a dark past — from the long-closed Moundsville State Penitentiary (featured on many ghost hunting TV shows) to the Archive of Afterlife Museum and Grave Creek Mound , there's no shortage of macabre places to visit here. 

Become a cave dweller at McConnell's Mill State Park, Pennsylvania

Distance:  42 min

A lot of people like to visit McConnells Mill State Park to see the old historic mill, covered bridge, and walk the trails. What us exciting people like to do is climb around on the huge rocks and search the crevices and caves that formed between them — carefully, of course. 

Be aw-struck by the frozen lighthouse in Cleveland, Ohio

Distance: 2 hours, 11 min

When to visit: Winter

There are a lot of things to do in Cleveland, Ohio , like visit the Buckland Witchcraft Museum , learn the history of the mysterious Franklin Castle , and behold the world's largest stamp , to name just a few of the many things to do here, but there's something extra special about the abandoned lighthouse on the lake. When the wind mixes with the freezing weather the lighthouse becomes encased in a blanket of ice — making it a truly remarkable site for the thousands of visitors who bare the winter weather just to see it — then they probably go and do all those other touristy things.

Lancaster is a unique city located in the heart of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

1. Lancaster County Amish Village

One of the most popular attractions close to Lancaster is the Amish Village.

The Amish and Mennonite people are known for embracing the simple life, living without electricity and other modern conveniences.

In Lancaster County you can learn more about the Amish way of life, and embed yourself in the Pennsylvania Dutch culture which is so integral to the state.

You can visit traditional Amish stores including bakeries and family restaurants.

There is even a museum for you to learn more about the history of the Amish and the Lancaster Country area.

Many of the tours in the area include a buggy ride with the locals.

2. Philadelphia

The largest city in Pennsylvania, and an integral part of the American struggle for independence, Philadelphia combines historical attractions with a unique modern culture that sets the city apart from many of the others in the Northeast US. Harrisburg is the capital of Pennsylvania and is an important city for learning about the history of the state.

The park itself also has a number of fairground style rides and rollercoasters.

There is a water park section, so if visiting in the summer be sure to bring a bathing suit.

In between exploring all the rides there are plenty of restaurants, cafés and picnic areas to relax, and of course gift shops to grab yourself some chocolate and Hershey’s merchandise.

10. Pocono Mountains

Located within the greater Appalachian Region, the Pocono Mountains area is popular with locals and very easy to reach from Lancaster.

There are plenty of hiking trails in the region for outdoorsy types, particularly in the Hickory Run State Park area.

The Boulder Field is an entire area covered in boulders thanks to a glacier that has since melted away.

Lake Henry is a popular area for fishing and canoeing.

Located in the north of Pennsylvania, Lackawanna State Park has many great options for getting close to nature.

Wildwater Kingdom is a very relaxed waterpark with easygoing slides and lazy rivers, making it the perfect place to cool off on a hot day.

National News | Body of missing Beaver County, Pa. man found in Monongahela River after 3-day search

A 36-year-old man from Beaver County, Pa., was found dead Tuesday afternoon , after a three-day search ended with local law enforcement discovering his truck in the Monongahela River.

Brian Posch , of Brighton Township, was initially reported missing when he failed to show up for work on Friday morning. Cellphone data led police to determine his last known location to be in the town of Elizabeth, near the waterway, reported CBS News Pittsburgh.

An extensive search followed, including dive teams and at least four boats on the river.

UPDATE: A missing Beaver County man has been found deceased after a three-day search in the Monongahela River. Thirty-six-year-old Brian Posch was found in a vehicle that was pulled from the river on Tuesday afternoon. Posch was last heard from Friday morning. On Monday, divers located a large mass of metal in the river but were unable to remove it due to unsafe weather conditions. The truck was removed the following day, at which point crews found Posch’s remains inside.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to carry out an autopsy on Wednesday to determine his exact cause of death.

It’s not yet clear how the 36-year-old ended up in the river but police say foul play is not suspected.

“We do not have evidence of foul play at this time, however, with all investigations, things could change at a moment’s notice,” said Elizabeth Police Chief Ken Honick.

A full investigation is being carried out by the Elizabeth Township Police Department, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner and the Allegheny County Police Department’s Homicide Unit.

Posch is survived by his wife and their young daughter .

Liberty Mountain Resort has announced that it will hold the inaugural Liberty Winefest on Saturday, June 8.

It’s scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the resort, located near Gettysburg in Pennsylvania’s Adams County. The original Winefest was scheduled for mid-October 20-23 but postponed by bad weather.

President Biden rips 'Mar-a-Lago values' on trail in Pennsylvania with Trump in court

WASHINGTON ― With Donald Trump stuck in a New York courtroom, President Joe Biden took his campaign Tuesday to his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he hammered the former president over his tax policies in an appeal to working-class voters .

Biden began a three-day swing through Pennsylvania, the biggest battleground of the 2024 election, blasting Trump's 2017 tax cuts for corporations and the wealthiest Americans while calling for the rich to pay their "fair share."

Biden, in a campaign speech, leaned into his modest upbringing in Scranton − "where honesty and decency matter," he said − and compared it to Trump's background of wealth and inheritance.

"People like Donald Trump learned very different lessons," Biden told supporters at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple. "He learned the best way to get rich is inherit it. He learned that paying taxes is something that people who work for a living did, not him. He learned that telling people they're fired was something to laugh about."

The Scranton stop − designed to make an economic case for Biden's reelection while inflation remains stubbornly high − fell one day after Tax Day, the April 15 deadline for people to file their federal tax returns. Biden released his tax returns Monday , while Trump did not, following a practice of not publicizing his returns that Trump maintained in the White House.

"When I look at the economy, I don't see it through the eyes of Mar-a-Lago, I see it through the eyes of Scranton − and that's not hyperbole," Biden said, adding that Trump "and his rich friends" embrace the "failed trickled-down policies" of the past 40 years.

"Scranton values or Mar-a-Lago values: These are the competing visions for our economy that raise fundamental questions of fairness at the heart of this campaign," Biden said.

The visit came as Trump attended day two of his criminal trial  in New York involving alleged hush-money payments he made to a porn star during the 2016 campaign.

Ahead of the November election, Biden is looking to improve Democratic performance with white working-class voters who lack college degrees, who have increasingly moved to the Republican camp in the Trump era.

In his State of the Union address last month, Biden revived a proposal to reverse the corporate tax rate cut that Trump and congressional Republicans passed in 2017 by raising the rate from 21% to 28%. The rate was previously set at 35% prior to the Trump-era cuts.

Biden has proposed increasing a new minimum on the largest billion-dollar corporations − which he signed into law in 2022 − from 15% to 21% and creating a new 25% minimum tax on Americans with more than $100 million in wealth, the 0.01% wealthiest Americans. He has vowed not to raise taxes on any American making more than $400,00 a year.

"No billionaire should be paying a lower tax rate than a teacher, or a nurse or a sanitation worker," Biden said, later taking a jab at the tumbling stock of Truth Social, Trump's social media company. "You know, I have to say: If Trump's stock in Truth Social, his company, drops any lower, he might do better under my tax plan than his."

In a statement, Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Trump "proudly passed the largest tax cuts in history" and accused Biden of backing the largest tax hike in history.

"When President Trump is back in the White House, he will advocate for more tax cuts for all Americans and reinvigorate America's energy industry to bring down inflation, lower the cost of living, and pay down our debt," Leavitt said.

A proposal put forward last month by the House Republican Study Committee would make permanent the Trump-era tax cuts on individuals and businesses, which are set to expire at the end of 2025, along with making other new tax cuts.

Brian Deese, former director of the National Economic Council in the Biden White House, told reporters the Republican plan would add $5 trillion to the deficit and would deliver billionaires a $3.5 million tax cut on average.

"Donald Trump is going to have to stand up in front of the American people and defend why the richest people in the country get a tax cut that is seven times greater than the income of a typical middle class family," Deese said during a Biden campaign call.

Pennsylvania, with its 19 electoral votes, is one of the most fiercely contested battleground states of the election. Biden carried Pennsylvania by just 1.2 percentage points in 2020. Pennsylvania also features a critical Senate race between incumbent Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and expected Republican challenger David McCormick.

Trump held a campaign rally in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania on Saturday. Biden plans to visit the Pittsburgh area on Wednesday and Philadelphia on Thursday in a push to tout an economy recovery that's gone unnoticed for many Americans while inflation remains high.

The trip to Scranton marked the eighth time either Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris have visited Pennsylvania in 2024.

Biden visits his Pennsylvania hometown to call for more taxes on the rich and cast Trump as elitist

President Joe Biden returned to his working-class childhood hometown of Scranton Tuesday to call for higher taxes on the rich and cast Donald Trump as an out-of-touch elitist, as he seeks to blunt the populist appeal of Trump’s comeback bid.

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — President Joe Biden made a nostalgic return to the house where he grew up in working-class Scranton on Tuesday, kicking off three days of campaigning across Pennsylvania by calling for higher taxes on the rich and casting Donald Trump as an out-of-touch elitist.

When the Democratic president wasn’t trying to blunt the populist appeal of his Republican predecessor’s comeback bid, he appeared to savor his trip down memory lane. He lingered longer than expected at his childhood home, where an American flag waved softly in the wind on the front porch and neighbors crowded the sidewalk under flowering trees and a pale blue sky. The president later posed for photos with children, some wearing school uniforms, in the backyard.

Biden is looking to gain ground in a key battleground state while Trump spends much of the week in a New York City courtroom for his first criminal trial . Biden heads to Pittsburgh on Wednesday and Philadelphia on Thursday, but he started his travels in Scranton, which has long played a starring role in his political autobiography.

On Tuesday, the city of 75,000 provided a backdrop for Biden’s efforts to reframe the conversation around the economy, which has left many Americans feeling sour about their financial situations at a time of stubborn inflation and elevated interest rates despite low unemployment.

The president said he wanted to make the tax code fairer, keeping more money in Americans’ pockets, while criticizing Trump, a billionaire himself, as a tool of wealthy interests.

“When I look at the economy, I don’t look at it through the eyes of Mar-a-Lago. I look at it through the eyes of Scranton,” Biden said, contrasting his hometown with the Florida estate where Trump lives.

Biden has proposed a 25% percent minimum tax rate for billionaires. He added that taxes are “how we invest in the country.”

“Scranton values or Mar-a-Lago values,” Biden said. “These are the competing visions for our economy that raise questions of fundamental fairness at the heart of this campaign.” He spoke at a community center from a stage flanked by a banner reading “Tax Fairness for All Americans.”

The president said decades of Republicans policies that cut taxes for the wealthy with the idea of stimulating the economy “failed America, and Donald Trump embodies that failure.” He scoffed that Trump’s background taught him little more than “the best way to get rich is to inherit it,” and he jabbed at the sharp fall in market value of the former president’s social media platform, Truth Social.

“If Trump’s stock in Truth Social, his company, drops any lower, he might do better under my tax plan than his,” Biden quipped.

Michael Whatley, chair of the Republican National Committee, blamed Biden for inflation in a statement about his trip.

“It’s no wonder why Pennsylvanians will vote to make America affordable again and elect President Trump in November,” he said.

Near the end of Biden’s speech, he sharply criticized Trump for reportedly calling veterans who died in combat “suckers and losers.” He said the comments, which Trump has denied, were “disqualifying,” adding, “Thank God I wasn’t standing next to him.”

Later in the day, Biden spoke at a training session for grassroots organizers at a union hall, telling attendees: “We have to win. It gets down to old-fashioned politics. It gets down to knocking on doors.”

Throughout the multiple stops, there were paeans to Biden’s roots in this town, where crowds lined the streets to cheer his motorcade. Trump flags were rare, and there was only a smattering of protests against Biden’s support for Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

“Joe Biden has never forgotten where he’s from,” Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti said before Biden’s speech at the community center. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro echoed the idea, saying, “This is a guy who has never forgotten the people he grew up with.”

“They’re the people on his mind, and they’re the people in his heart,” Shapiro said.

When Biden took the stage at the community center, the crowd chanted “four more years” before he started speaking. Biden smiled and joked, “I think I should go home now.” Then he quickly added, “except I am already home.”

Biden grew up in Scranton’s Green Ridge neighborhood until his father struggled to find work and moved the family to Delaware when the future president was 10.

Although Delaware eventually became the launching pad for Biden’s political career, he often returned to Scranton, including visiting his childhood home on Election Day 2020.

During that campaign, Biden described the presidential campaign as “Scranton versus Park Avenue.” His reelection team is framing this year’s race in a similar way, releasing a video that calls for promoting the middle class and features interviews with his cousin, a grade school classmate and a county commissioner.

Christopher Borick, director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, described Scranton as a “mythical place in political culture” that will provide a test for Biden’s political appeal.

“It’s an area that, on paper, aligns perfectly with the populist gains of the Republican Party during the Trump era,” Borick said.

However, Biden won the city and the surrounding county in 2020. If Biden is able to carry Scranton and similar places again this year, as well as limit Trump’s winning margins in rural areas, he may be able to secure another victory in Pennsylvania.

Sam DeMarco, chair of the Republican Party in Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is located, said “across the board, it costs more to live today than it did when Joe Biden came to office.”

“These are the things that families feel,” he said. “And a scripted appearance by the president is not going to change that.”

As president, Trump signed into law in 2017 a series of tax breaks that disproportionately benefit the rich . Many of the cuts expire at the end of 2025, and Biden wants to keep a majority of them to fulfill his promise that no one earning less than $400,000 will pay more taxes.

However, he also wants to raise $4.9 trillion in revenue over 10 years with higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations. His platform includes a “billionaire’s tax,” which would set a minimum rate of 25% on the income of the richest Americans.

Biden’s Pennsylvania swing overlaps with the start of Trump’s first criminal trial, presenting an opportunity and a challenge for Democrats.

Trump is defending himself against criminal charges for a scheme to suppress allegations of affairs with a porn actor and a Playboy model. Biden’s team has quietly embraced the contrast of the former president sequestered in a courtroom while the current president has free rein to focus on economic issues that are top of mind for voters.

However, the juxtaposition becomes less helpful if Trump soaks up the country’s attention during the first-ever criminal trial of a former president.

Biden didn’t mention Trump’s legal problems. Instead, he told the community center crowd that he learned in Scranton that “money doesn’t determine your worth.”
