After numerous planning, cancelling, and rescheduling rounds, I finally embarked on the Uttari Betta trek over a weekend. Uttari Betta, an easily accessible hill, lends perfectly to one-day treks from Bangalore . It has swiftly become one of the most sought-after trekking destinations near Bangalore .

Did you know that Bangalore is enveloped by numerous hills (referred to as “betta” in the Kannada language), offering ideal options for one-day treks? Among them, notable mentions include Nandi Hill , Skandagiri , Shivgange betta , Bilikal Rangaswamy betta , Channarayana Durga Fort , Bheema Bakasura betta , Hulukadi betta and Kaurava Kunda .

About Uttari betta

Also referred to as Hutridurga, Uttari Betta is a fortified hill in the Kunigal taluk of Karnataka state. Rising to an elevation of 1130 meters, Uttari Betta is renowned among trekkers, drawing crowds, particularly on weekends.

In India, a hike is commonly referred to as a trek. Therefore, I’ll use the term “trek” to align with local terminology when discussing the Uttari Betta hike, although it technically spans a single day.

Hutridurga Fort

Constructed by Kempegowda during the 16th century, Hutridurga boasts a ruined fort atop Uttari Betta. This fort, also known as the Hurtidurga fort, served as a military stronghold for Tipu Sultan until its conquest by the British in 1791. Amidst the fort’s remains lies a small temple, the Shankareshwara Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva.

Shankareshwara temple

Additionally, visitors can find a Nandi statue atop the hill fort accompanied by another temple honouring Lord Anjaneya. The fortification comprises eight primary gateways stretching from the base to the summit, supplemented by numerous outer gates.

One of the doors in Uttari betta trek

The optimal time for hiking Uttari Betta is during the winter, as the summer brings scorching heat, making it advisable to avoid trekking. Moreover, trekking can be hazardous in rainy conditions due to slippery surfaces, so exercise caution during ascent and descent. While at the peak, be prepared for sudden weather changes; I experienced a significant downpour during my visit, with no shelter available at the summit.

Uttari Betta Trek Details

The Uttari Betta trek stands out among the hills surrounding Bangalore for its lush greenery, offering a refreshing contrast to the region’s typically barren and arid landscape.

Starting and concluding at the base of the hill in Santhepete (or Huthridurga), this trek spans 5 kilometres, a round trip typically completed in approximately 2 hours.

  • Starting and Finishing Points : Base of the hill at Santhepete (or Huthridurga).
  • Total Distance : 5 kilometres return.
  • Time Taken : 2 hours.
  • Grade : Easy. There are well-built steps and railings to climb.
  • Type of Trek : Return.

Rated as easy, the trek features well-constructed steps and railings, facilitating a smooth ascent. It follows a return route, allowing trekkers to retrace their steps to the starting point upon reaching the summit.

Important Information

  • Prepare a sturdy day pack containing essentials such as a first aid kit , sunscreen, poncho, sweater or jacket, torch, personal medication, and sunglasses.
  • Ensure you wear robust and comfortable shoes for the trek.
  • Always carry an extra pair of socks to prevent discomfort from blisters.
  • Stay hydrated by carrying at least 2 litres of water for the day.
  • Pack your lunch and snacks to enjoy at the peak, as no food options are available on the hill.
  • Please respect the environment by refraining from littering; carry your rubbish and dispose it only in designated bins.
  • As there are no shops on the hill, purchase your lunch and snacks at a nearby fast food joint or darshini before starting the trek.
  • While this trek can be undertaken independently, consider joining a trekking agency to ensure a well-planned day, including transportation arrangements.
  • There are no toilet facilities on the hill or at the peak.
  • Exercise caution around monkeys, as they may attempt to snatch bags or food.

How to Get to Santhepete?

The starting point of the trek is in Santhepete (also called Huthridurga) in Kunigal taluk of Tumkur district.

Santhepete is approximately 80 kilometres from Bangalore city, with a travel time of around 2 to 3 hours by road. The route heads towards Nelmangala and includes sections with toll roads.

By Public Transport

Regular bus services operate between Bangalore city and Kunigal. The recommended approach is to board a local bus to Kunigal and hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi to Hutridurga.

Note: This transportation method may pose challenges for the return journey as auto-rickshaws, or taxis may not be readily available after the trek.

One-Day Itinerary for Uttari Betta Trek

Embark on a thrilling one-day adventure to Uttari Betta from Bangalore. Kick-start your journey bright and early in the morning, allowing 2 to 3 hours for the road trip. En route, make a pit stop for a hearty breakfast at one of the many fast food joints or darshinis. Don’t forget to pack your lunch for the trek ahead.

Upon reaching the base of the hill, commence your ascent. The trek typically lasts about one hour, leading to the breathtaking peak. Revel in the awe-inspiring vistas of neighbouring mountains and quaint villages as you savour your lunch at the summit.

Begin descending from the peak, a journey of less than an hour, returning you to the base. Once descended, set off for Bangalore, with another 2-hour road journey ahead, barring any traffic delays.

Trekking Agency

Bangalore boasts numerous trekking agencies that offer guided excursions to nearby hills. While I haven’t personally sampled all of them, I’ve heard positive reviews about many. One agency I can vouch for is the Bangalore Mountaineering Club (BMC), recognised as the city’s oldest and most established trekking agency. My experiences with BMC have been enjoyable; their youthful trek leads demonstrate strong leadership skills, ensuring punctuality and a smooth trekking experience.

  • Trekking Agency : BMC .
  • Cost : INR 1259 per person, including the GST.
  • Booking : The booking process is easy and can be done on their website.
  • After booking, make sure to call them to confirm the trek. All these treks require a minimum number of participants, and if the agency does not get the participants, they usually cancel the treks.

Is Uttari Betta Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

I strongly advise against solo hiking, regardless of gender. The hill can become isolated rapidly, making a trek with at least one companion essential. Generally, having a trekking buddy by your side is recommended to ensure preparedness for any unforeseen circumstances.

Hutridurga

The trek was very easy, bus ride to the base was fun too. But we reached the top at 4 am and had 2 hours to spend before sunrise which was hard as there was no campfire and it was pretty cold. Breakfast on the return journey was in a restaurant and it was pretty good.

I guess we reached too early to hill top, 2 hours prior to sunrise. Braving the chilly breeze and waiting for sunrise was a little rough patch. Distance too and fro from Bengaluru was much longer than the trek duration🤣🤣 It's a good puck for beginners though.

mudita upreti

This is my first solo trek of mine. I met some awesome people there and with the night sky, stars, and the sunrise everything was just perfect.

Started trekking after ages and it turned out to be a good one... Kudos to the team... The only drawback I feel is the many pickups which actually were more time-consuming n tiring than the trek up the hill. Can be planned better to reduce time spent on it.

Rajat Agrawal

"The trek was super fun. The overall easy trek was properly organized, and sleeping bags were the best "

We booked our voucher for Uttari Betta trekking with Banbanjara a month back and I must say, we had a phenomenal experience. Their hassle-free and quick booking policy saved us a lot of time and made things a lot easier. On the day of our Uttari Betta sunrise trekking, we simply had nothing to worry about as we already had the entry ticket as well as the guide ready. Thanks a lot to the whole team of Banbanjara!

Ahilya Bhat

Effortless trekking experience. Their hassle-less and fast customer service and booking policy rescued us from physically standing in long queues and getting the tickets. We also got a very knowledgeable guide who helped us with quick tit-bits about the place. Had a wonderful experience indeed!

The trek was organized properly and was easy. Ended up having a nice time with friends.

Good trek for the weekend. Fairly easy trek and can easily be done in a day. Missed the sunrise because of the rain so don't know about the sunrise views. Have some qualms about the organizers because I specifically asked them to stop at a medical shop and it didn't seem like they cared. Other arrangements seemed alright.

This is one of the easiest treks I have ever been. The main monolithic portion which could have been challenging is carved into steps and it makes this trek a cake walk. It is an ideal trek for first-timers or even children.

Uttari Betta (Hutridurga) - Night Trek

A “Sunrise Trek” sounds exciting, and it sure is! You trek at night, camp at the peak and wake up to a beautiful sunrise. Uttari Betta is one such option close to Bangalore. We opted for a trek organised by BMC, during the good monsoon months and it was a great experience by all measures.

Uttari Betta, also called Hutridurga, is one of the Navadurgas, the nine fortified hills around Bangalore. The ruins are still visible all along the way. Being fairly easy and short, it is a great place for a quick getaway for people of all ages.

Trek difficulty: Easy

Duration and Time of Visit

1 night August mid

To and From

  • At that hour, the bus journey passed like a breeze, especially once we were out of the city area

  • This was the first time I was trekking at night. Since you can not see anything, you need to be extra vigilant, strictly walk in a queue and definitely follow the instructions
  • The hill is actually a rock, with vegetation all over it and the trek route is ~3km long, the terrain being easy
  • Besides our backpacks, we were also carrying a sleeping bag each, since the plan was to sleep at the peak till sunrise
  • Without much difficulty, and without being able to see any of the natural beauty around us, we reached the top in about 1.5 hours, packed ourselves into the sleeping bags and dozed off
  • The peak had a lot of vegetation, small entrapments of water and obviously, a lot of boulders; and a vast stretch of green all around
  • It was extremely calm - we sat silently for a long time. It was extremely inviting - we walked around for a long time
  • While the terrain is all rock, it has thick intermittent patches of green
  • There is a temple of Lord Shiva on the way, and ruins of a fort built by Kempegowda in the 16th century
  • There comes a spot where we had only small steps cut into the boulder. While it was actually not that difficult, but I am not sure how we had crossed it the previous night - ignorance is bliss!
  • It took us about 45 minutes to descend, stopping every once in a while to click pictures
  • Finally we reached the bottom and saw in full, the hill that we had spent the night on
  • We boarded the bus, stopped in between for a quick breakfast and reached Bangalore by 11am, bringing the short and sweet trip to a close

Major Expenses

  • BMC trek cost: Rs. 1,300

Tips and Resources

  • If you do the night trek, definitely be extra careful and carry a good flashlight. Also, I think you should do the night trek only with an organised group
  • It can be windy at the top, hence it’s advisable to carry an extra layer of clothing for the night
  • It’s best to wear a cap, apply sunscreen and carry sufficient water for the morning trek
  • You should carry the camping essentials (toiletries, first aid)

Hutridurga Trek | The Experience

Hutridurga Betta

“Hutridurga Hill Station”, were the words written on an arch that welcomed us as left the main road that led to the village of Santhepete. As the dust cleared, we could make out the silhouette of a hill in the distance. This was the Hutridurga Betta, the hill that was a mute witness to the surge of history in the region. The rocky hill hid within its fold a thousand stories, tales from the pre-historic era, tales from the times of Krishnadevaraya and Kempegowda, and tales from the times of Tipu Sultan and the British.

A narrow road meanders to the foot of the hill. The drive to Hutridurga gives you an immersive experience of rural Karnataka. You pass tableaux of typical Indian rural life, a cowherd shooing his buffaloes to pasture, small village shops, temples to village goddesses.

A road is now being built to the middle of the hill. Roadwork is in progress. You can drive almost to the start of the Hutridurga Fort trek. You reach a small village, one of the many that nestle in the shadow of the Uttari Betta. The small village lies directly at the foot of the Hutridurga Fort. The village is known simply as Aalada Mara (Banyan Tree) and has a cluster of houses, temple to the local Goddess – Maramma and Adi Narayana Temple. There is a provision store just before the starting point of the trek.  One can buy Coffee, Tea, Biscuits etc. at the shop.

Hutridurga

There is a small space that has been cleared and is designated for Parking, this is where one needs to park their bikes and cars.

Hutridurga

We alight from our vehicle and pass the temple to reach the starting point of the Hutridurga Trek. A temporary stall selling drinking water, soft drinks, and buttermilk greet visitors. The shop is run by a school teacher.

Hutridurga Trek | The Trek Begins

Uttari Betta Trek Starting Point

A series of steps cut in the rock leads to a small stone entrance lying between the ruined walls of a fort. This is where the trek up the Hutridurga fort begins. The entrance is one of a series of 7 entrances at different levels that lead to the top of the fort. Today only 6 of these entrances can be found.

Hutridurga Trek

In a bid to develop the place as a tourist attraction and to make the ancient Shiva temple at the top accessible to all, steps are being made in the rock face with safety railings. So part of the trek now involves climbing these steps while part of the trek is through a rocky path.

Hutridurga Fort Trek

We take the steps and climb. As you climb higher and higher, the views become more and more stunning. You can tiny villages, green fields, and small rocky outcrops glistening in the sun.

Hutridurga Trek

You keep passing one fort entrance after another, some of the entrances still retain a part of their original form and make for excellent and shady places to relax and catch your breath.

Hutridurga Trek Review

You pass the ruins of various stone structures as you make your way to the top. For the most part, the terrain is rocky and barren.

Hutridurga Trek Review

But it has surprisingly green patches with rich vegetation as you near the top. In fact, there are patches that are veritable grasslands.

Hutridurga Trek Review

You walk through grass that tower above you. The grass is brown and covers the trekking path in portions. It may be mentioned that the climb is not steep and is gradual for most of the Hutridurga trek.

Hutridurga Trek | The Summit

Hutridurga Trek – Uttari Betta Trekking

A flight of steep rock steps leads to the top of the Hutri Betta (Hill) where stands the ancient Shiva temple called Shankareshwara Temple.

Hutridurga Trek – Uttari Betta Trekking

The steps are strewn with loose rock and are a bit steep, apparently work is in progress, so we carefully negotiate the steps and reach the temple. By the side of the temple and adjacent to the temple walls is a rectangular mandapa or portico with a roof supported by plain rock columns.

Hutridurga Trek – Uttari Betta Trekking

The sun is beating down harshly by the time we reach the top and the shade of the mandapa is welcoming. This is where we take a bite from our packed lunch, and make sure we collect all the trash and take it back for proper disposal. As we munch our lunch we look at the small rectangular hole in the rock by the side of the temple. It is filled with water and glistens like an emerald as the rays of the sun reflect off it.

Hutridurga Trek – Uttari Betta Trekking

This is a perennial water source, a spring with an unknown source that never dries up, the spring called Dodda Donne has many a myth associated with it.

View from Hutridurga

We spend some time admiring the spectacular views from the temple. The entire world stretches below our feet, or so it seems. A sense of calm pervades our being and the tiredness of the climb magically vanishes and we get up recharged and rejuvenated.

Uttari Betta Trek

A little walk towards the side of the summit takes you to a relatively flatter surface on the edge of the hill. The vegetation is here is a medley of colours. Rich green shades merge with golden brown against the dull grey canvas of the rocks, the blue of the sky provides the perfect contrast.

Uttari Betta Trek

Some rocks are balanced precariously on each other and make for a dramatic landscape. This is the place that is referred to as Hutridurga sunrise point or Hutrdiurga viewpoint. In the distance can be seen the peaks of the Savandurga hills.

Hutridurga Fort Trek

Time seems to stand still as we gaze out at the distant Savandurga hills, the green fields stretching far below, the white clouds flitting across the blue sky, and the wild cacti and other vegetation triumphantly surviving in the crevices and crannies of rocks.

Hutri Durga Trek

It felt great to be just alive. But time moves on inexorably and we had to break the magical spell that the seclusion of Hutridurga had cast on us.

It was time to literally descend back to earth.

Such a detailed post you have written. I have done trekking only as a kid not since last 10-15years.

Such a stunning trek place. I have never done any trekking in my life coz not much physical strength. However, atleast I would like to visit this place.

Hutri Durga trek seems absolutely amazing. We haven’t been to this part of India yet and know very little about it. Your comprehensive guide will come in handy when we will visit these places. Another gem worth a bookmark.

Such a beautiful place close to Bangalore that I didn’t know about and never even heard of it. Will suggest it to my family who lives there.

The views are so breathtaking. Besides Bangalore has such good weather. This looks like something I will add to my bucket list should I come that side of the country.

I loved the pictures, well clicked. I am planning a trek soon, I’ll look for Hutridurga.

I have been to this place and I agree it’s absolutely stunning. I love the fort above and it’s a pretty awesome day trek from Bangalore.

Wow, this is an amazing post with stunning pictures. Though trekking is difficult for me due to my asthma, I’m going to share this post to my brother who loves trekking.

Wow! Such a beautiful spot. I have been to Bangalore a few times but, next time, I need to venture out of the city to see spots like this!

So it seems you had really great time tracking here… the pictures says it all … surely in my list

What a beautiful travelogue. India is truly incredible with so many places to see. This trek is so exciting

This seems to be a lovely trekking destination. I will surely recommend my friends in Bangalore.

My kids and my husband loves trekking alot. And on the same end I m not a great lover for trekking. I m pretty sure when I will show up this blog to them they will definitely want to go and explore places. Thanks for recommendation 🙂

As someone who used to go on treks in Korea, I would love to do the Hutridurga trek someday. Your post has inspired me to start exploring new treks around my region as well, so thank you for that!

Wow this trek looks wonderful and the images that you have shared talk volumes about the beauty of this place.

This looks like such a beautiful trek! I bet it’s amazing to camp up top and watch the sunrise in the morning. Will need to add this to my India bucket list if I ever get there.

Hutridurga Trek sounds like a perfect day trip to escape the confines of the city. How nice that it’s only about an hour away from the hustle and bustle. I didn’t imagine that there would be road works there, as well as a tiny little village. The temple at the ‘top of the world’ would make the hike worth it. I’m really intrigued with the hole that’s fed by a natural spring. That’s cool.

That’s a beautiful read of your experience.

The views from atop are beautiful. I love areas that are still relatively knew and sort of a hidden gem. It looks like they are gearing up for tourism and making the hike more accessible. The stairs they created blend in well with the landscape 🙂
