Getting There and Getting Around the Burren

by Anthony King Thursday, June 7, 2018

If you’re in Ireland, the Burren is definitely worth a visit. The Burren’s nearest airport is Shannon Airport, approximately a 45-minute drive away. The trip from Dublin is a four-hour drive. Renting a car is the best way to explore the region in depth. But keep in mind that the roads are narrower than you might presume, and visitors often underestimate how long journeys can take. (Keep in mind also that in Ireland, like in England, you drive on the left side of the road.)

If you have only a limited amount of time, there are a number of coach bus tours available from Galway, about an hour away. A day tour from Lally Tours leaves the Galway Coach Station about 10 a.m. It stops off at the Cliffs of Moher, goes through Lisdoonvarna and then on to the Aillwee Cave, discovered serendipitously when a man’s dog vanished into the side of a mountain while chasing a rabbit (fortunately, he found the dog). O’Neachtain Tours offers a similar service from Galway. Day tours also leave from Limerick and Ennis, both to the south of the Burren.

There are a range of accommodations in the Burren. One of the most popular is the Gregans Castle Hotel, situated on the region’s north coast in Ballyvaughan, where you can warm yourself on a rainy day by the fire. Ballinalacken Castle Country House in Doolin is another good option, and the Old Ground Hotel in Ennis is popular with locals for food and hosts live Irish music.

A good place to get a quick introduction to the natural history of the region is the Burren Perfumery near Carron in the heart of the Burren, which introduces you to the region’s flowers, animals, archaeology and landscapes. An organic garden features native herbs, and perfumes, soaps, creams and floral waters made onsite are available in the gift shop.

2024 Open Championship one and done picks, sleepers, predictions: PGA Tour betting advice from top golf expert

Mike mcclure locked in his expert one and done golf picks, projected leaderboard, and top sleepers for the british open 2024 at royal troon golf club in scotland.

collin-morikawa-usatsi-cbs-3.jpg

The final major championship of the year gets underway on Thursday when the 2024 Open Championship tees off at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will be out to win his second major of the season, and is currently listed as the 4-1 betting favorite in the 2024 Open Championship odds. The 28-year-old has finished in the top-25 in each of his three Open Championship starts. Other top contenders in the 2024 Open Championship field include Rory McIlroy (8-1), Bryson DeChambeau (9-1), Ludvig Aberg (9-1), Collin Morikawa (10-1), Xander Schauffele (13-1) and Tommy Fleetwood (20-1).

The total 2024 Open Championship purse is $17 million, with the winner taking home $3.1 million. With One and Done pools winding down, it is imperative that you nail your British Open picks. Should you back one of the favorites or target a longshot like Hideki Matsuyama or Max Homa? Before locking in your 2024 Open Championship one and done picks,  you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

The One and Done format is growing in popularity. It has several noticeable similarities to NFL Survivor pools, with the main difference being entries are not eliminated with a bad week. Players pick one golfer per week and earn points based on their selected golfer's prize money for that tournament. Golfers can only be used once per season, and the point format makes nailing majors, signature events, and big money tournaments critical.

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his golf picks. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters -- its third Masters in a row -- and this year's PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has his sights on the 2024 Open Championship and just revealed his optimal One and Done picks. They are a must-see for any player looking for an edge in their One and Done pool. You can only see McClure's British Open 2024 one and done picks at SportsLine .

Top 2024 British Open One and Done picks

One of McClure's top OAD picks for the Open Championship is Collin Morikawa. The 27-year-old enters this week ranked fifth on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (1.372), eighth in strokes gained tee-to-green (1.221), 12th in strokes gained around-the-green (0.386), and 16th in strokes gained off-the-tee (0.495). Morikawa is on a current run of 10-straight top-25 finishes, which has included five top-fives.

At last week's Scottish Open, Morikawa shot under par in all four rounds en route to a T4 finish. The former Cal standout has two career major championships, with one of them coming at the 2021 Open Championship. While he has missed two consecutive British Open cuts, Morikawa's elite ball striking and high level ability around the green make him a great fit for the links style course that will be in play this week.  You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

How to make Open Championship 2024 One and Done picks

McClure is also targeting another golfer for his 2024 Open Championship one and done picks who has a long track record of success against elite competition. This multiple time PGA Tour winner has the ability to win any tournament he enters, and is one of the most talented golfers in this field. You can find out who it is, and check out all of McClure's British Open one and done picks at SportsLine .

Who wins the the British Open 2024, and which golfers should you target for your one and done picks this week at Royal Troon Golf Club? Visit SportsLine now to get Mike McClure's Open Championship 2024 one and done picks, all from the DFS pro who has nailed seven outright winners in 2024 , and find out.

Prominent British floral designer makes a Poulsbo farm her one-stop on U.S. tour

K itsap County flower farmers got their moment in the sun last week when prominent UK floral designer Rachel Wardley taught a week-long workshop at Poulsbo's Petal and Pitchfork Farm.

Stacy Marshall, who owns Petal and Pitchfork Flowers , hosted Wardley during her time in Kitsap. She said she hopes Wardley's visit will draw attention to Kitsap farms and underscore the importance of supporting local flower growers.

"The number of flower growers...in Kitsap and in the Poulsbo area is growing substantially," Marshall said. "And that is directly tied to our economy."

Marshall, a Kitsap resident since 2000 and the co-founder of Poulsbo's fair-trade coffee roaster Grounds for Change, began growing flowers on a corner of her family's 15-acre farm in 2017 — but fell in love with growing long before that.

"My journey as a grower began over three decades ago as I found every opportunity to transform grassy suburban lawns into colorful gardens and edible landscapes," she wrote on Petal and Pitchfork's website .

Wardley is the founder and director of Tallulah Rose Flower School , a UK floristry school with a focus on sustainability. She first reached out to Marshall in March 2023, after discovering Petal and Pitchfork on Instagram. She was interested in taking her floristry school on the road in 2024.

"It felt quite organic," Wardley said of Marshall's growing style. "And that's how I work myself...I just related to Stacey and her approach, I think."

Tallulah Rose's tour will also include stops in Japan and the Netherlands later this year. Petal and Pitchfork is Wardley's only U.S. stop.

"I decided that I just wanted to focus on this one," Wardley said. "And really just give it my all and have a few days to spend with Stacey to familiarize myself with everything."

She said the local reaction to that choice has been gratifying.

"The feedback I've had from some is, 'I can't believe you're here,'" she said. "'I can't believe you've come here.'"

'Slow' flowers and sustainability

Both Marshall and Wardley identify with the Slow Flowers Movement, an effort launched in 2013 by Seattle flower grower Deborah Prinzing.

The movement "was born out of the fact that most of our flowers were being imported from South America," Marshall said. "Chemical-laden, horrible labor practices, and obviously then the carbon footprint."

Prinzing's solution: encourage consumers to buy locally grown flowers.

Accordingly, local growers, including Petal and Pitchfork, supplied all the flowers for Wardley's workshop, which taught participants several kinds of floral arrangements, along with photography tips and sustainability practices. Among the Kitsap growers were two other Poulsbo flower farms — Healer's Harvest and Willow & Mabel Garden Co .

A broader context of preservation

Marshall, who is also the public outreach co-lead for a Kitsap farmland preservation group, said Wardley's presence in Kitsap has implications not just for flower farmers, but for all local farmers.

According to Marshall, that's because the biggest threats to farmland preservation are "people who don't understand the importance of farmland for the future, people who aren't paying attention to climate change, people who don't ever have the opportunity to step food on a beautiful farm."

Marshall hopes that in the wake of Wardley's workshop, the Tallulah Rose brand will bring additional visitors to Petals and Pitchfork.

"I am a firm believer that the more people who experience the agricultural landscape in our county, the more people who will be moved to preserve it and care about it," Marshall said.

Wardley's visit is also fortuitous in that it comes less than a month before the second annual Kitsap Farm Tour , which will be held August 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, sponsored by Washington State University's Kitsap Extension, is a chance for Kitsap residents to visit local farms for a one-day, self-guided tour. Petal and Pitchfork is a participating farm, according to Marshall.

A successful week

"For me, it's always about the people," Wardley said a few days into the workshop. "Floristry isn't hard. I can teach floral design. I can teach someone how to do something. If you've got beautiful flowers, which we have, it's not hard to create something that's beautiful. But for me, it's about the people."

She added, "This group of women have been a lot of fun, very curious. They've had amazing questions."

As for Marshall, who had the opportunity to sit in on Wardley's workshop throughout the week?

"I feel like this five-year-old who's jumping up and down, being like, 'We do matter! We do matter!'" Marshall said. "Kitsap matters! And farmland matters! And flower farmers here in Poulsbo matter!"

Jordyn Neerdaels, of Boise, center, grabs a bunch of white cloud larkspur from Meghan Campbell, of Seattle, as they take part in Tallulah Rose Flower School founder and director Rachel Wardley’s week-long workshop at Petal and Pitchfork Farm in Poulsbo on Thursday, July 18, 2024. The class spent the sunny morning creating a flower installation centered around an idyllic scene of a tree swing and farm wheelbarrow.

Points and payouts: Robert MacIntyre earns 500 FedExCup points, $1.58 at Genesis Scottish Open

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

It’s never expected by any golfer to author a story of the season, but two? That’d be like asking Paul O’Neill to homer twice in the same game. O’Neill wasn’t a classic power hitter, but Robert MacIntyre most definitely has a flair for the dramatic.

With an explosive finish that included an eagle-3 at the 16th hole and a birdie conversion from just outside 22 feet at the par-4 18th, Bob – as he’s arguably known better amongst fans and how he was introduced at The Renaissance Club – prevailed by one stroke over Adam Scott. MacIntyre is the first Scot to win his national open since Colin Montgomerie at Loch Lomond Golf Club in 1999.

The lefty was +4000 to win pre-tournament at BetMGM, so there was money to be made when he posted 18-under 262. MacIntyre himself pockets $1,575,000 and 500 FedExCup points. He already was exempt into The Open Championship via the 2023 Race to Dubai and the 2025 editions of The Sentry, THE PLAYERS Championship, the Masters and the PGA Championship via his victory at Hamilton Golf & Country Club, but today’s win extends his PGA TOUR membership in the winner's category an additional season to 2027.

Robert MacIntyre’s Round 4 winning highlights from Genesis Scottish Open

Scott was +6600 to win, respectful given that his last victory was The Genesis Invitational in 2020. This is his first podium finish since a playoff loss at the Wyndham Championship in 2021.

Romain Langasque finished alone in third at The Renaissance Club, three strokes back of the champ. It’s the Frenchman’s third top-five finish in his last eight starts worldwide. He was available at +20000 to win.

Ludvig Åberg (+1200) held sole possession of the lead after the second and third rounds, but he closed in 3-over 73 to finish T4, four shots adrift.

At +800, defending champion Rory McIlroy was the tournament favorite. He was among the sixsome tied for fourth that also included red-hot Aaron Rai (+4000). While the Englishman remains winless on the PGA TOUR, Rai secured the first of the last three exemptions into The Open. The other two went to Richard Mansell (+20000) and Alex Noren (+6600), each of whom shared 10th place. The top three not otherwise exempt into the final major earned the spots.

NOTE: Points and Payouts cites pre-tournament odds to win at BetMGM for all golfers who made the cut. For live odds, visit BetMGM .
