Trek remedy 2017 9.9 race shop limited, remedy searches for bite without the bounce - a classy performer, for 2017 trek’s solution for the wheel size and travel brain twister has been to up the remedy to 150mm and drop the wheel size down to only 27.5”..

Trek Remedy 2017 – the review

This is where the Remedy was at seven or eight years ago in terms of travel but irrespective of how many steps forward or back this move is, Trek have clearly identified the comfort zone need of buyers for a 150/27.5 trail/enduro bike. Today we’re excited to review the Trek Remedy 2017 edition.

Five sizes, 27.5 wheels the new 2017 Remedy dishes out some fully up to date geometry numbers. The 21.5 size that we rode out in Squamish features a 477mm reach, 1231mm wheelbase and 65.5 head angle with 339mm bottom bracket. These are very good statistics for a 150/160mm bike and a six foot rider but we believe there’s still room for one more size the range. This top end 9 series is slightly higher than the other lesser priced bikes with longer Lyrik 160mm fork which in effect makes it slacker but a shade higher.

trek remedy 9 rsl

The Trek Remedy has been our trail bike of the year in the past for its great suspension and geometry but for 2017 Trek say they are trying to simplify their range in order to try and make it more understandable for buyers. Why they’ve changed the Remedy from 29” and 27.5” wheels to purely 27.5” we can only imagine will be clearer in the coming weeks when it’s rumoured Trek will launch an updated Slash. Let’s say at the time we really missed a long travel 29” bike in the range but had our fingers crossed there was more to come.

trek remedy 9 rsl

Suspension/Chassis

It’s another flawless build from Trek with many impressive features. Radiant with its stunning finish and supremely engineered chassis the bike is damped with a Rockshox Deluxe RT3, RE:aktiv 3 position unit compared to the Fox parts fitted to the Fuel’s. Up front the slightly longer travel Lyrik is fitted to this top Trek Remedy.

trek remedy 9 rsl

More than anything with the Trek Remedy 2017, we were keen to see how it performed against the previous 29” version which had one of the best suspension packages on any trail bike we have ever ridden. The RE:aktiv Fox damper contrary to how we’d been told it would work was a bike that operated at its most efficient in wet conditions, a damper that searched out grip and was not one that revelled in pumping terrain to get momentum. With no discernible platform it was a sensitive damper which could hunt down even the vaguest offering of grip which required a slightly opposing style to manage the front and rear effectively but a system that we had come to admire nonetheless.

trek remedy 9 rsl

Componentry

Already boosted with a 148mm rear hub and 110mm front the Remedy is shod with Bontrager’s excellent Elite wheelset and SE4 tyres but everyone’s eyes will be on the Sram Eagle groupset that drives this bike, the Sram Guide Ultimate brakes and the impressive new Dropline seatpost with such an easy action lever.

trek remedy 9 rsl

Grip, that’s the vibe the Remedy gives out, on the rear it’s a real searcher for bite without the bounce. We actually found the damper on the Remedy pretty close to the old Fox unit on the early bikes. This is a good thing. A very good thing. Still, you can load the rear when needed, it just needs a slightly more delicate touch than some of the more muscle bound dampers on some enduro bikes. It strikes an excellent balance in this respect.

DIRT MOUNTAIN BIKE | BIKE REVIEWS

The rear can offers good resistance in the hard setting to aid climbing and the Eagle enabled easy leg spinning on the climbs. The bike silently glided, cornered and dropped into steep terrain with perfect poise. It’s a beautifully figured out bike happy in its sinewy but well balanced build.

trek remedy 9 rsl

Limitations. Not much. Ugly bar?

trek remedy 9 rsl

The Remedy offers a performance advantage that people will be considering especially now that they might well be lining this bike up against direct sales bikes. For £5600 this has never been more important. And its in the chassis integrity and the damper that the Remedy has pre-eminence. The bike has classy damping and the chassis intensity is excellent.

But there’s more to Trek bikes. And this is also where the brand scores over basic bikes, is the detail, the bits that cost a touch more to produce yet that give a performance advantage – ABP, Knock Block steerer, great chain/frame protection, E2 steerer, Mino Link and a fully loaded build – it’s a lot of money but a lot of bike also.

Yes the carbon on this bike is a masterclass but for a few thousand less the £2800 Remedy 9 Race Shop Limited will be a more realistic offering. This is because I’m happy to walk rather than ride at the gearing range Eagle offers, and as great as Trek carbon is the geometry on the aluminium bike is the same, and if you’re about to drop six to seven grand on a carbon enduro bike then I’d hold your horses a week or two anyway.

But as a high performance 27.5 wheel 150mm travel bike this bike is pretty much hard to fault. Bottom line, an easy to ride, upbeat and very capable bike.

Trek Remedy 9 – first ride review

All-rounder full-sus bike that's easy to ride

Russell Burton/Future Publishing

Guy Kesteven

trek remedy 9 rsl

Trek’s Remedy frame has stayed largely unchanged for a while, but this year’s version is tidier than ever. Sorted componentry completes a very easy to ride all-rounder, although it’s definitely more soft roader than hardcore hammer bike.

Ride & handling: Confidence boosting XC bike

Getting ready to ride is simplified by the included plastic sag indicators. These clip onto the fork leg and shock body to give a usefully accurate baseline pressure setting straight away.

It’s particularly useful on the DRCV dampers because they don’t feel like normal springs in their initial response. That’s because the twin chamber design only opens to full volume at a specific point in the stroke. The first part of travel ramps up quickly from a plush initial start to a stable pedalling platform, as though you’re riding a much shorter travel bike.

While it’s no lightweight, the frame stiffness is impressive for harnessing shoulder and leg power and the XR3 tyres roll okay once you’ve got it going. In other words, once you’re tapping out a tempo rather than trying to accelerate the Remedy cruises and hustles along singletrack and climbs like a tighter, shorter travel rig.

The ABP back end is impressively balanced in relation to pedalling forces, so there’s no obvious tug or kickback when you’re trying to torque your way up a rough, rock/root stepped climb.

The handling is very well balanced otherwise, with enough stem length to keep the front wheel straight on steep climbs but not so long it gets outwitted when you’re weaving it through tight tree switchbacks. The Bontrager tyres are predictable in most conditions.

The frame is impressively stiff from bars to thru-axle back end, and while the Fox 32 fork can feel soft and flexy up front it’s more forgiving than a 34 or Revelation for traction and comfort.

The Mino Link chip gives you the option of slightly quicker handling and more ground clearance when pedalling if you’re in a cross-country mood, or slacking it out and dropping it a fraction for a more surefooted feel (which is what we went for). Being able to drop and raise the saddle instantly is a massive bonus when pushing the pace on roller coaster trails.

The pivot kinematics mean it sucks up mid-sized chunder and bigger speed killing blocks well for a 26in-wheeled bike. Bigger hits also open the second shock chamber automatically for a more linear and lump-hungry feel, and the back end feels seamless but not soggy even when slamming through serious geology.

The same twin chamber system also makes the fork generously plush and linear when you’re plonking down steps off the brakes or rattling over rocks. The lurch from mid-stroke ramp-up to sudden deep dive can catch you out if you’re already pushing the limit of braking/cornering traction and our more aggressive riders really didn’t like it.

Unlike ‘normal,’ single air-chamber forks you can’t just add a bit of oil to make the spring more progressive (ie, get harder to compress as it goes), and Trek’s new volume reducer shim – which does the job instead – isn’t available yet. Using the Trail setting of the CTD damper is enough to noticeably reduce unexpected nosedive, but this fork is just too willing to plunge in big compressions and berms.

Trek’s 2013 Remedy is the most sorted yet – it allies great kit to a confidence-inspiring and friendly character. The smooth DRCV suspension helps even moderate riders milk every millimetre of travel, although more aggressive riders are definitely going to want the fork-firming bungs for more predictable braking and berm-carving performance.

Frame & equipment: Well-evolved and clever

The Remedy frame outline hasn’t changed much since the double-chamber DRCV (Dual Rate Control Valve) shock was added to the bike for 2010. A stiff, tapered E2 head tube, a double-curved down tube, that broad top tube, the single-piece magnesium ‘Evo’ shock linkage and the 142x12mm screw-thru rear axle still keep everything securely in line.

The Full Floater shock – squeezed between an extended swingarm tip and the shock linkage – plus the Active Braking Pivot (ABP) rear pivot design are proven performance enhancers, while a switchable Mino Link on the seatstay can slacken angles by half a degree and drop the bottom bracket 10mm. A plastic down tube guard and chainguide tabs mean it’s ready for whatever roller system radical riders might want to fit, and whatever rocks fly as a result.

The Reverb dropper post is externally routed as standard, but there’s an exit hole for internal routing if you upgrade to the Stealth version of the post. The rear brake mount is IS (International Standard) rather than the new-style post-mount, and the bottom bracket is a conventional screw-in cup style. The second one may not be cutting edge, but will please those who value easy bearing replacement and proven reliability over a contemporary oversized or press-fit crank setup.

Trek have also stuck with a conventional triple chainset to give a full 30 gear spread. Shimano’s ultra reliable XT stop and go gear is a welcome sight for high-mileage-with-low-maintenance fans, and the clutch rear mech keeps the drivetrain quieter.

Bontrager were one of the first to introduce wide yet light trail wheels, and these Rhythm Elite wheels wrapped in big, usefully grippy but not too slow XR3 rubber are a great match for the ride.

The 720mm/80mm cockpit is a decent balance between power assisted steering, reasonable breathing space and tree punching inconvenience, and the fat Bontrager saddle won’t cripple you if you go for a quick blast in your boxer shorts. Though your neighbours might if you don’t wear anything else.

The slick gold Kashima coating on the custom (Trek-only) DRCV Fox fork is a nice touch, and staying with 32 rather than 34mm legs saves half a pound of weight. While the rear shock isn’t similarly gilded, it does share the dual chamber internals and synced CTD (Climb Trail Descend) damping.

2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL

The Remedy 9 RSL is built around a mix of Sram / Rockshox parts, and in-house Bontrager branded parts (Trek owns Bontrager, for anyone who missed that memo). Generally speaking, I found the build to be pretty intelligent, and there weren’t any parts that were screaming to be replaced right away.

The drivetrain is Sram X1 11 speed , although it gets a downgraded GX cassette. I’ve spent a ton of time on X1 drivetrains (and GX cassettes) over the past two years on a couple different bikes, and while it doesn’t quite have the crisp shifter action of X01 or XX1, it has worked really well for me and held up well — no complaints there.

Braking is also handled by Sram, with Guide RS stoppers paired with 180 mm rotors. I’m a fan of the fact that Trek didn’t downgrade to the Guide R’s — the SwingLink levers (the “S” in the RS) offer far better modulation. And for 2017, all Guides have Sram’s new Bleeding Edge system, which means that I have to buy a new bleed kit, but it also means that bleeds are easier to do well.

But it’s the suspension that sets the Race Shop Limited build apart from the “regular” Remedy — the RSL gets a 160 mm Rockshox Lyrik rather than the lighter-but-less-burly 150 mm Rockshox Pike on the non-RSL versions. The Lyrik is a bigger, stiffer, heavier fork, and it rides a good bit differently than a Pike due to a huge negative air chamber. Basically, that means the Lyrik is ridiculously supple at the beginning of its stroke, and it feels far closer to a true downhill fork when smashing through rough trails. The Lyrik that comes on the RSL is also the Dual Position Air version of the fork, which means you can drop the travel from 160 mm down to 130 mm with a quick turn of a dial. Personally, I find that I almost never use the travel adjust feature, so I’d rather have the simplicity and lower cost of the DebonAir model. But I’m sure some people will appreciate the ability to drop the front end a bit on climbs.

On the back, suspension is handled by a Rockshox Deluxe RT3, which has Trek’s proprietary RE:aktiv tune (which also means, annoyingly, that it also comes in Trek’s proprietary size that’s tricky to replace). At its heart, the shock is just a Rockshox Deluxe with the normal external adjustments — a three position open / pedal / lock lever, and a rebound knob. But the RE:aktiv tune is quite a bit different from “normal” Rockshox shocks, and the difference has a pretty significant impact on how the Remedy rides.

Rounding out the Remedy’s build spec is a slew of Bontrager parts. The Remedy rolls on Bontrager Line Comp 30 wheels shod with 2.4” Bontrager SE4 tires, which come ready to be set up tubeless. The Line Comp wheels leave a little to be desired; they’re certainly not the stiffest around, and the rim material seems to be pretty soft. I put a few solid dents in them on seemingly minor impacts. The Bontrager hubs are also underwhelming; the rear was prone to skipping, and the front lacked torque caps to interface nicely with the Lyrik.

I got along reasonably well with the Bontrager SE4 tires, although the casing is a bit light for what the Remedy is capable of, and I pinched the tire in a few spots. That aside, I’m a fan of the tread pattern for use in the rear, but I found myself wishing for a non-DH casing version of the Bontrager G5 for use in the front.

A Bontrager bar and stem get the job done, and Trek gets at least a moderate amount of kudos for spec’ing a wide-ish 780 mm bar, although the rise and sweep of the bar took a little getting used to.

And last but not least is the Bontrager Drop Line dropper post. So far, it’s functioned pretty well, and I like the under-bar remote for it. It has more rotational play than I’d like, it doesn’t quite get the full 125 mm travel as advertised, and it can get a little sticky when muddy. But it hasn’t broken or failed in any way, so really, no major complaints there.

NEXT: Fit and Geometry, Performance, Etc.

Great, detailed (yikes!) review on a great bike, Noah. I’ve got the predecessor in 29 and love it. Kinda hoping Trek adds that model next year.

I’ve also got a 2016 Fuel EX that I use for endurance racing (disclosure — Trek helps me out in this regard). I’ve been pounding this bike for nearly two full seasons (including a few laps up, over and around Tally Mountain in your back yard). A few observations on both bikes FWIW:

1. Love the water bottle capability. Both of mine (21 or 21.5) will hold a one-liter Zefal Magnum bottle. Heaven!

2. I’ve never had FS bikes with longer lasting, quieter pivots. On new bikes, I pop out the seals from each bearing, and top them off with Dumonde Tech liquid grease. Never had a peep from either bike, going on two seasons for the Fuel EX and three seasons for the Remedy.

3. The Reaktiv rear shocks are everything they are cracked up to be for trail riding. Like a Brain that works right. For actual racing, I use a shock with firmer lockout valving for the inevitable gravel road climbing sections in just about every endurance race.

4. As an old school guy, I wondered about the integrated lower headset bearings. Turns out to be a non-issue, and the Remedy has seen a LOT of rugged, rocky riding.

Amazing review. Extremely detailed and well thought through.

Noah — thank you for the detailed review. I have been looking at buying the Fuel EX 9.8 and was wondering how much I could infer from your review of the Remedy in considering the Fuel EX? In general the review seems very favorable of the Remedy and trying to ascertain if you were to review the current Fuel EX if you would reach similar conclusions. I know it’s a difficult question to answer but hoping for some guidance. I’m coming off of a 10-year old 26″ Santa Cruz Superlight and would like to upgrade. I’m a little cautious of going all the way up to a 29er vs. a 27.5, but I like the components on the Fuel EX 9.8 and some of the common characteristics of the Remedy in your review hit home with me. I live in Marin County and truth be told do most of my riding on fire roads, although I plan to increase riding of single tracks. A local bike shop in Fairfax is really pushing the Norco Optic 9.2 or 7.2, but I haven’t seen any recent reviews of Norco to assess.

Love your reviews and keep up the great work. I hope Jonathan is healing well!

Great review

Customer Review: 2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL

This review was written by our customer, Cory Bryant. He is an avid mountain biker out on the east coast and definitely enjoys shredding his 2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL around. Let's hear what he has to say! -- Intended Use: Trail/ All-mountain Wheels Size: 27.5” Front/Rear Travel: 160/150 Aluminum Frame PF92 Bottom Bracket Sram X1 Drivetrain/ Guide RS Brakes

Customer Review: 2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL

As a bike with 160/150mm suspension front and rear, the first question is always: “But can it climb?” The Remedy answers with an emphatic, YES! With their 2017 models, Trek has finally got Rockshox on board with the reAKTIV system they’ve been employing on Fox suspensions on previous models. The new metric Deluxe RT3 shock makes the most of Treks technology to create a rear suspension that is virtually bob-free , even when stand up pedal-mashing rears its ugly head, and with the Dual Position Air Lyrik up front, the front never wandered when climbing whether in long or short travel mode. I can honestly say I have never pedaled a bike with this kind of efficiency and small bump compliance. 30% sag in the rear seems to be the sweet spot for me, and I am able to crush long fire road climbs, and short, steep, rooty ascents with ease. The Bontrager Line Comp wheels provide plenty of stiffness to give you the confidence on climbs, and the spec’d Bontrager SE4 tires do a great job providing the grip to get up even the most demanding hills.

Customer Review: 2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL

WOW. That’s the best way I can think of to describe the Remedy’s descending prowess. It absolutely RIPS! For 2017, Trek re-engineered the downtubes on their trail models to be a straight tube, and this change has given the Remedy an insane amount of stiffness. To facilitate this change, Trek has also introduced their new Knock Block system. Simply put, Knock Block introduces a keyed headset and stem that limits the degree of rotation on the fork. This was necessary to ensure the 160mm RockShox Lyrik fork up front doesn’t damage the downtube. When I first walked around the bike, this looked like it could be an issue when navigating tight switchbacks out on the trail, but after getting out on the bike it is not noticeable at all. The stiffness however IS, and it allows the Remedy to pop and play off of anything you point it at. Response on the Lyrik and the Deluxe RT3 is amazing, and with 25/30% sag front and rear, it is the perfect mix of playfulness, and confidence on anything I could throw at it. Boost spacing is employed both front and rear, and with an internal diameter of 28mm on the Bontrager Line Comp wheels, the 2.4” SE4 tires provides loads of grip to completely rail berms and flat turns alike, and still provide a great braking platform. Speaking of brakes, the SRAM Guide RS brakes provide a ton of stopping power, while also giving great modulation. The wide 780mm Bontrager bars and 35mm Bontrager stem are super comfortable, and create a nice cockpit for long or short days in the saddle. Speaking of the saddle, the included 150mm Rockshox Reverb seatpost has been flawless to date, although certain models may come equipped with the Bontrager Dropline post with 125mm of travel.

Customer Review: 2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL

The Remedy comes with SRAM’s X1 1x11 drivetrain, and despite not being the top of the line Eagle 1x12 setup, the 10-42 range proves to be a fantastic and worthy setup for the bike . I am never left wanting more range than what’s available, even when the eventual lung busting techy climbs show up to the party. Shifter engagement and feel get top marks from me, and with a 32T chainring up front, it’s happy sailing all day long. There is no mounting point for a front derailleur, so for those still interested in a 2x setup, you may need to expand your horizons when hopping on the Remedy.

Odds and Ends / Conclusion

With the 2017 Remedy, Trek is still using the Mino Link that has been around for a number of years to allow the rider to adjust the bottom bracket height and head angle. In the “High” setting this creates a head angle of 65.6 degrees, and in the “Low” setting that changes to 65 degrees. Trek also employs their Control Freak cable management system, with makes internal routing a quiet, simple affair. The Remedy also has the tried and true (and sometimes noisy) PF92 pressed bottom bracket, but I have not experienced any issues thus far with it. Two down tube protectors finish off the frame accents. The Remedy has been an absolute blast to ride, and compares favorably to anything out on the market currently . Long, low, and slack only goes so far in describing the bike, especially when it completely tears uphill and almost goes hunting for the next technical ascent. I looked for months for a bike that could do it all, and after throwing a leg over the Remedy I just knew it was the one for me. I firmly believe that the 2017 Remedy 9 RSL, should be included with the Yeti SB6, Santa Cruz Bronson, and Specialized Enduro, as one of the best all-around, do-everything bikes on the market!

First Ride: Trek Remedy 9.9 2017 Race Shop Limited

trek remedy 9 rsl

Not only have Trek announced a totally new Trek Fuel EX 29er today, but also a brand new Trek Remedy platform – stiffer, lighter and more aggressive than the outgoing bike. We were there to check it out and see if the changes to the 150 mm version were more than skin deep.

The new 2017 Trek Remedy 9.9 Race Shop Limited, punching into Slash Territory, but only in 27.5!

What have Trek changed with the new 2017 Trek Remedy?

The outgoing Trek Remedy was a great bike, but let’s face it, it was well due an update! With its 68/67.5° (depending on High or Low geometry setting) head angle and 140 mm of travel it certainly felt a little dated when compared to the strong opposition. Well, Trek has finally brought us a new model, bang up to date and punching hard. Boasting 10 mm more travel and a slacker head angle that now runs at 66.5/66° it’s an altogether more aggressive bike, especially when you realise the top tube has been stretched around 10 mm (depending on frame size) and the bottom bracket now sits lower, for added corning stability and railing potential. The Trek Remedy shares the same Straight Shot down tube as seen on the new Fuel EX. Like the Fuel EX this means there’s no longer enough clearance for the fork crown to spin 360 degrees, but Trek has the answer.

Using the Knock Block keyed headset, the bars can no longer spin right round (unnoticeable riding unless you like doing bar spins), which in turn protects the front of the frame from impacts from the controls and fork crown. It’s a very simple mechanical system that with the purchase of special keyed spacer can be made to work with non-Bontrager stems too. The downtube also features a frame protection plate on the downtube should the Knock Block fail for any reason. You may think that this is a lot of engineering to achieve a straight down tube and you would be right, but Trek claims there is more to it that simply aesthetics. By using a straight line between the BB and head tube (the strongest way of connecting two points) Trek claims to have massively increased stiffness in the new 2017 Trek Remedy, making it significantly stronger and stiffer than the current Slash!

Trek's new Knock Block stops the fork crown from hitting the Straight Shot downtube

What about the Trek Remedy 29er?

There is one noticeable omission from the new Trek lineup, where is the Trek Remedy 29er? It’s true Trek will no longer be offering the Trek Remedy with 29-inch wheels. Their new rider focussed approach pitches the Fuel EX Plus at riders looking for more confidence and grip, the Fuel EX 29er at riders looking for pure speed who want to push their limits, and the Trek Remedy at riders who want to challenge themselves on more technical trails. This will initially disappoint those hoping for a big hitting 29er, but with the new 2017 Fuel EX 29 being so capable their disappointment will be short lived, and for those still looking for big hit 29er weapon, well you are going to have to watch this space!

The Remedy will no longer be offered in a 29er option.

Geometry of the new 2017 Trek Remedy

Specification of the trek remedy 9.9 race shop limited.

We were riding the €7,999 (£5,600) Race Shop Limited (RSL) special edition version (models start at €2499), aimed at riders looking for more of a race ready bike. This RSL version features a longer RockShox Lyrik RCT3 fork (160 mm) which slackens the head angle to 65.5°, and also the heavy (by today’s standards) but undoubtedly tough Bontrager Line Elite 30 wheels shod with Bontrager SE4 Team Issue tyres. The drive train is the desirable SRAM X01 Eagle with the enormous 10 – 50 tooth cassette, allowing you to spin up even the steepest of climbs, and we are always pleased to see the SRAM Guide Ultimate brakes. The build is finished off with, of course, a host of Bontrager carbon parts including a 780 mm wide carbon bar in the 35 mm standard, a short 35 mm stem featuring the Knock Block system and Bontrager’s own Drop Line 125 mm dropper post.

The ABP pivot location ensures the suspension remains active while braking

Riding the Trek Remedy EX 9.9 29

No sooner do you sling a leg over the new Trek Remedy than everything starts to feel very familiar, Trek have chosen the componentry and contact points well and it inspires confidence from the first pedal stroke. We were testing on the tough trails of Squamish, Canada, featuring everything from fast and flowing to super tech rock rolls and slabs, the perfect trails for the Trek Remedy.

Climbing on the 2017 Trek Remedy 9.9 RSL

At 12.7 kg the Trek Remedy 9.9 RSL punches up the hills well, the Eagle drive train being liberally deployed on the short punchy climbs. The Full floater rear end and RE:aktiv shock are super active, eating up even the smallest trail imperfections while still providing support if you stamp on the pedals, However, on longer climbs we found that the active rear end did bob a little and had us reaching for the shock to engage the firmer mode for a little more support. Even after a long day in the saddle the bike still skipped up the trails with ease and did not feel sluggish or lazy, it’s a big bike, but one that would be happy to pedal all day. The 74° seat angle kept us well placed over the pedals and the position felt comfortable and roomy (test rider 1.8m tall was riding a 18.5″ frame)

We were impressed with the Remedy's easy to exploit playfulness

Descending on the Trek Remedy 9.9 RSL

When it came to the descents, this is where the Trek Remedy demonstrated its new found skills. Naturally poppy and playful the Full Floater rear end positively encouraged hooligan behaviour in the turns, dishing up its 150 mm as if it was endless, and cutting around on the trail. The full floater rear suspension is incredibly smooth through big square edge hits, and the RE:aktiv tuned shock recovers quickly and with great control, one of the most composed performers out there in big rock gardens.

When we hit the big steep rock rolls, even when hard on the brakes the ABP pivot keeps the rear end working smoothly, tracking well and extracting the last hopes of traction from the trail. Front to back the ride is very balanced and it’s an easy bike to ride quickly after only a short ‘getting to know you’ period. On big hits and drops, the suspension ramps up well, without any hint of harsh bottom out. The OCLV carbon is certainly stiff, giving off a strong air of solidity and power as it holds tough lines and drives hard through turns. The low BB allows you to pump the bike hard through turns and keeps the fun levels high. We would need to test further in different terrains before a full review can be given, but first impressions are very good.

The Remedy is an easy bike to ride fast, handling and feel are intuitive.

First impressions on the new Trek Remedy 9.9 RSL

Trek know how to build great riding bikes, we know that – and the Trek Remedy 9.9 RSL is no exception. The aggressive geometry and well thought out contact points make it easy to extract the best out of this bike. The composed and predictable handling, combined with the increased reach boost confidence and control over the really tough terrain. We need to test the bike further on different terrain before we can bring a full review but first impressions indicated that the new 2017 Trek Remedy has taken all the ingredients that made the old model great, and also mixed in a dash of Slash, which is a very good thing!

You can see an overview of all the models in the new Trek range, including the new Trek Fuel EX on our 2017 Trek Range overview .Trek also dropped a new Fuel EX 29er, so be sure to check out our first ride impressions on the new Trek Fuel EX 9.9 29er .

2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL. Fit and Geometry. Unlike a lot of companies these days, Trek uses the more traditional numeric size notation. So I rode the 18.5" version of the bike, which roughly correlates to either a big "Medium" or a small-ish "Large" in most other brands. (As a side note, I wish Trek would just use the Small / Medium ...

  13. 2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL

2017 Trek Remedy 9 RSL. June 25, 2017 by Noah Bodman. The Build. The Remedy 9 RSL is built around a mix of Sram / Rockshox parts, and in-house Bontrager branded parts (Trek owns Bontrager, for anyone who missed that memo). Generally speaking, I found the build to be pretty intelligent, and there weren't any parts that were screaming to be ...
