10+ Love Photography Styles to Capture Hearts

WolfGlobal

Think love's just a fleeting feeling? Think again when we talk about love photography, where every snapshot is a testament to Cupid's handiwork. Imagine freezing a moment where the air practically crackles with emotion, or capturing that perfect, heart-melting gaze between lovers—yes, we're going to dive deep into documenting emotion and romantic imagery. But what exactly is love photography? We're not just talking garden-variety couple selfies here. It’s about pictures steeped in sentiment, shots that tell a love story better than words ever could. Let's embark on a picture-perfect journey that paints love not just as a feeling or an idea, but as an art form. Get ready to witness love through the lens—beyond the poses, into the very heart of emotion itself.

What exactly is love photography

love journey photography

You're scrolling through Instagram, heart-eyed, staring at those cute couples snuggled up in a photo that screams #couplegoals. What you're double-tapping on, my friend, is the art of love photography. Think of it as the photographic ninja that documents emotion, stealing those intimate moments and locking them into a visual timewarp. We're talking about capturing that gaze, the light touch, the laughter that bubbles up when two people are just, well, super into each other.

Now, love photography isn't just for those about to tie the knot. Oh no, it's way more than wedding bells and bouquets. Those snapshots of love come in all shapes and sizes. We're dreaming of romantic imagery that can light fireworks in your chest! From the moment someone whispers 'I like you' under the stars to the ever-so-subtle exchange of smirks across a crowded room; it's about preserving those feels.

Alright, you want in? Here's the low-down: first, think of a scene that just oozes romance for you. Got it? Good. Now, imagine placing a couple right there in that scene. Next, it's all about the lighting and angles—soft, warm, and always flattering. Whether it's a stolen kiss or a hearty laugh, remember, you're painting with light here. Natural, candid or styled to perfection, let your shutter do the whispering and watch as each click tells a bit of your love story.

Bottom line: love photography is more than just photos. It's about capturing those little slices of 'awww' on camera, cherishing them and living that moment, over and over again. Because when you look back, you’ll realize these aren't just pictures, they're the chapters of your very own epic love story—and that, my dear, is something worth capturing.

The history and origin of love photography

love journey photography

Oh, not so fast, folks! Let's take a lil' trip back in time to where it all began. The story of love photos didn't just pop out of nowhere like your grandma's surprise birthday party. The evolution of love in photography dates back to the days when folks could finally freeze a moment and say, "Heck yeah, that's amore!" So, what were those iconic love photographs? Think of a sailor planting a smooch on a nurse in Times Square or the steamy tango dancers caught mid-dip. Those snaps didn't just capture outfits; they snagged the whole essence of romance.

Now, these historical romance captures—they're not just about gooey feelings. They tell a tale, like how people started getting hitched for love instead of land deals. You can practically feel the butterflies taking flight in each photo. And those old-timey images with couples holding hands by the hand-cranked Model T? They're the OGs that showed how love has been the cat's meow even before hashtags were a thing.

Got your camera? Good— 'cause you could be the next big thing in love photography. Look at those vintage love shoot ideas and timeless romantic photos for some good ol' inspiration. Want your photos to scream "eternal love"? Go for that monochrome love portrait. It's classic, it's dramatic, and it tells a story without saying a peep. After all, love's been the hot gossip for ages, and if a picture's worth a thousand words, those whispers are epic love stories just waiting to be told. Get snapping!

Classic love photography

love journey photography

Picture this: You're flipping through an old, dusty photo album and there they are—the timeless romantic photos that pull at your heartstrings with their simplicity and depth. Classic love photography is all about capturing the essence of a couple's emotion in photos that are as enduring as the love they depict.

These are the monochrome love portraits that strip away the noise and let the love story tell itself through contrast and light. Sure, color is great, but when it comes to evoking that vintage vibe and really focusing on the emotion, black and white is where it's at. Vintage love shoot ideas often draw inspiration from old Hollywood glam or the understated elegance of mid-century lovers, giving you a snapshot that feels like a piece of history.

Think about it, what makes these photos classic isn't just their age—it's the unspoken stories they tell. Each frame holds a moment captured in time, preserved for generations to come. To create your own masterpieces, think less about props and more about connection; it's in the stolen glances and the gentle touches where you'll find your shot. To get started, why not look into some vintage love shoot ideas that can help you set the scene for romance straight out of an old-timey tale?

These aren't just photos; they are tangible memories that defy the years and the ever-changing trends. They're a testament to love that, like the style in which they're captured, never fades.

Nature love photography

love journey photography

You're strolling through a lush forest, and boom—the perfect scene strikes you. You witnessing an outdoor love story unfolding with every step. Nature love photography? It's like capturing hearts using mother nature as your wingman. And who can resist those outdoor romance captures where every leaf and petal seems to cheer on the lovebirds? Your backyard just turned into a natural studio!

Think about it; a dew-kissed meadow at dawn, the sun teasing through tall trees, a daring wildlife couple shoot—nature's got the knack for the dramatic, huh? And you know what? It costs you nothing! Well, except maybe a few mosquito bites. But that's a small price to pay for snaps that scream romance with every pixel.

Want to sprinkle a bit of that natural magic in your photos? Here's the lowdown: use that natural backdrop for love imagery like you're concocting a visual love potion. Choose a spot where light sneaks through the branches, giving your couple that heavenly glow. And remember, timing is key. Get the light right, and you'll nail those captures without even trying.

Now, you're probably itching to grab your camera and drag a couple into the wilderness. Hold up! Before you go all Tarzan, scout your location. Don't let a photobomb by a bear ruin that tender embrace. And hey, why not be a bit extra and plan it around wildlife appearances? Just imagine—a deer waltzing in the backdrop of a kiss. That's going on the 'gram for sure!

Remember, nature love photography isn't just about snapping a couple in the great outdoors. It's about storytelling with every leaf, branch, and ray of light. So, get out there, find your spot, and turn nature into your own giant canvas of affection.

Wolfglobal

Romantic Couple Love Photography

love journey photography

Picture this: you and your sweetheart, wrapped up in each other's arms, with a backdrop that could make anyone swoon. That's romantic couple love photography for you—think less posing, more smooching. It's about capturing those unguarded moments when you're both just naturally overflowing with feelings.

First off, let's get up close and personal. Try going for those shots that get all the little details, like intertwined fingers or that adorable nose crinkle when giggles happen. This isn't just a photoshoot, think of it as partners in love picture session , where each snapshot tells a piece of your shared love story.

Now, how do you get all that affection through the lens ? Easy - just be your genuine, love-struck selves. A real pro knows how to blend into the background, catching those candid sparks of love you throw around without even thinking. Not to mention, these kinds of shoots can happen anywhere. A cozy café, a bustling city street, or just chilling at home—it's all fair game!

And folks, this is totally the time to get creative. Love dancing in the rain? Why not snap a few joyful twirls? Big on baking together? A flour fight could make for some hilariously sweet memories. Trust me when I say, it's these quirky, personal touches that'll have you gushing over your photos years down the line.

Remember, good romantic couple photography is not about being picture perfect; it's about seizing real, raw, heartfelt connection. So snuggle up, have fun, and let those emotions flow!

The best things in life are free.

And so is our instagram pod., landscape love photography.

love journey photography

Say cheese to Mother Nature and your sweetie, 'cause we're diving into landscape love photography ! This style isn't just about taking pretty pictures; it’s about painting a vast canvas of emotions with scenic romance photography as your brush and those wicked cool, expansive love vistas as your palette.

In landscape love photography, you roll out the red carpet for picturesque scenery to set the stage for romance. Think of it as putting your love story into an epic movie scene—those picturesque love backdrops make each moment pop like popcorn in a microwave. Grand mountains, serene lakes, or even a field of wildflowers can make the perfect setting for lovebirds looking to capture their epic tale.

Here's a bit of pro advice: timing is everything. Catch that golden hour glow or the magical twilight; it's like nature's filter and believe me, it's better than any app. Plus, these shots are wall-worthy – big time. Hello, what's not to love about amazing Instagrammable moments that scream couple goals?

And who says you need to trek the Himalayas for this? Just pick a spot that resonates with your love story. Maybe where you first held hands? Or where you realized, 'yep, this is the real deal'? That'll make your photo shoot as authentic as the love you're capturing.

To master this style, channel your inner Ansel Adams with a twist of romance. It's your love saga and Mother Earth co-starring in a picture-perfect day. Lace up your boots, and go capture that scenic romance photography that'll have everyone double-tapping in awe!

Bridal love photography

love journey photography

Ever wondered what makes bridal love photography tug at our heartstrings? It's that magical blend of intimate engagement photography and sentimental wedding photography that captures love in its most enduring state. Bridal photography isn't just about snapping a set of pretty pictures—it's about storytelling, capturing the essence of the couple's journey together.

From the anticipation-filled moments of getting ready, those stolen glances and gentle touches, to the infectious joy of the "I Dos," bridal love photographers have an eye for the small, intimate details. They weave together a narrative of the day with images that are sure to be cherished as enduring love photo collections . These photos aren't just for the couple, but for generations to come, a timeless testament to their love.

To nail this style, focus on the raw emotions and the connections, not just the aesthetics of the venues or dresses. Think about hiring photographers known for capturing those candid, emotional moments. They'll help you embrace the beauty of the day with lovers lost in each other's eyes, framed by a soft, dreamy backdrop.

Bridal love photography celebrates the couple's unique love story, offering a look into their shared emotions. As much as it's about capturing the elegance and splendor of the day, it’s equally about the laughters shared, the tears of happiness, and the little looks of love. The photos encapsulate more than a moment— they secure a feeling, a promise of love, forever delighting hearts.

Baby love photography

love journey photography

You want to capture the squishy, sleepy bundle of joy in the most tender way possible, right? Let's dive into the sweet world of baby love photography . This style is all about those tender newborn sessions . Cooing and aww-ing are pretty much mandatory here.

To nail this, think about serene settings that show the pure and serene baby adoration during shoots. We're talking soft blankets, gentle lighting, and a peaceful vibe that even the sleep-deprived parents can feel blissed out in.

Now, if you've ever gazed at infant love portraits, you know they hit you right in the feels with their innocence. Want to create this kind of magic? Focus on simplicity and let those cute baby features take the spotlight.

And remember, it's not just about snapping pictures. It's about creating an environment where the baby can be their most relaxed, snoozy self. Because nothing screams 'love' more than a peaceful baby, snuggled up and dreaming away.

New parents are usually bursting with love and wanting to freeze time—baby love photography does just that. It captures the heart-swelling, unconditional love parents feel when they look at their little one. Keep these tips in your back pocket, and you'll be the go-to for capturing these heart-melting moments.

Candid love photography

love journey photography

Picture this: you and your boo, chilling on a park bench, completely unaware of the camera. That's the essence of candid love photography . It's all about capturing those insular, intimate moments when you think no one's watching. Those genuine smiles, quiet whispers, and spontaneous laughter create a snapshot that's worth a thousand love songs.

When you're on the hunt for that unguarded snapshot, you gotta keep your eyes peeled. You know, like a love detective. Wait for the tender touch or the accidental nudge that says, "Hey, I'm here with you, and there's no place I'd rather be." You'll want to catch those unposed emotional connections that tell a story without a single word.

Now, say you're strolling down the street and you spot a couple sharing a milkshake. One click, at just the right spontaneous love moment, and you've got a real heart-tugger! It's these photos that remind us why we're all so obsessed with love. 'Cause let's be real – even the toughest cookie can't resist a sweet, candid mush moment.

Sunset love photography

love journey photography

Sunset love photography—it's where the sky's natural fireworks meet those sizzling sparks flying between lovebirds. Seriously, have you seen those shots? Pure magic. Couples look like they've been dipped in a pool of golden honey, thanks to the golden hour couple sessions . It’s like everything is rimmed with gold, and even the air feels warmer.

And here's the deal: the setting sun ain't waiting for anyone. You've got that short window where the light is just right for those twilight romantic moods . You know, that time when the sky goes all sorts of crazy colors, and it looks like Mother Nature herself's got the hots for these couples. It’s about snapping those moments when sunlight and romance are literally bouncing off each other.

Now let’s talk feels. 'Cause when you catch that sun-hugged embrace or a silhouette-smooch against a melting sky, buddy, you've captured something epic. These sunlight and romance captures ? They speak louder than any love song a stereo could blast. And guess what, a stroll through this golden gallery of sunset love will teach you it's not just about taking a picture; it's about telling a love story with a damn good backdrop.

Quick tip for you shutterbugs looking to nail this style: timing is everything! Park yourselves well ahead of sunset, set up, and get cozy with the couple. Make 'em forget the camera's even there. Just keep 'em wrapped up in each other, and let the sky do its thing. That's how you freeze that perfect moment; that's how you shoot love in its best light.

Celebrated photographers like Jane Smith and John Doe? They're the wizards behind some stunning sunset shots that make you feel all mushy inside. Mirror their patience, their eye for the whimsical, and you've got a shot at creating images that'll warm hearts faster than a hot chocolate on a snowy day.

Q: What is a photography love called?

A: Your love for photography is often called "photophilia," meaning you've got a soft spot for snapping pics.

Q: When you love photography quotes?

Final Words

From its origins to timeless classics, and from candid shots to those precious sunset moments, we've covered the essence and the evolution. We've seen how every snap of couples, nature, and even those adorable baby portraits can capture the sweetest love stories.

Remember, whether you're behind the lens or in front of it, capturing love is all about the feeling you create. Keep that passion burning, and let your photos tell a tale for ages. My then fiancé (now husband!) and I engaged Forever Love Journey for our pre-wedding photography and videography. From our first email interactions with Tina & Edward, we were very impressed by their professionalism as they quickly drafted up a detailed proposal followed by creative ideas and suggestions based on the location of our shoot.

During the shoot, Tina helped us to feel comfortable and relaxed even though we are both quite shy and awkward, and the photos came out looking very natural. We also liked the way they weaved in clips of us, the scenery, and the interview to tell the story of our ‘forever love journey’ in the video. We appreciate that Tina & Edward were very open to our feedback throughout the whole process and we are very happy with the final products.

Many of our wedding guests complimented the high quality photos and video, and we would definitely recommend Forever Love Journey to any couple looking for a reasonable and dependable photographer and videographer!

“I still recall my journeys to the East Coast of Greenland as the greatest and most fearless ones of my life. I was only twenty-three when I took this picture of a six-year-old boy jumping off the roof, making a summersault, and landing in a pile of snow. To me it became an image not only about the strength and courage of the children in this village, but also about what was happening inside myself. I had fallen in love with a local woman and [had] decided to live with her family to be trained as a hunter and a fisherman by the Inuits. I had started a new life, a new journey that made me feel exactly like that boy jumping off the roof.” —Jacob Aue Sobol

“The subjects of my photographs are at the cusp between childhood and adulthood. The girl here radiates a sense of ambiguity, of vulnerability, of soul-searching; it is in this fleeting in-between state of dramatic physical and emotional change, that these qualities become more visible. I’m interested in the tension between her teenage sweetness and awkwardness, made all the more palpable by her pose, and the contrasts between the textures. While this portrait shows a transitory moment of life, it is also timeless—a reminder that we are all in a state of change on life’s journey.” — Hellen van Meene

“This particular photo has a special meaning to me, even though it hadn’t been published in my House Hunting series, where I explored the Bay Area suburbs at night. After the completion of a body of work, I will often find things that didn’t get published because there was certain hyper sense of uniformity that I was looking for when I was making my initial choices. However, once you are able to gain some space and time to reflect, gems like this emerge and you scratch your head and ask, why haven’t I used this one before?” — Todd Hido

“I took a pilgrimage out in the Mojave Desert with sculptor/installation artist Abigail DeVille to pay homage and respects to our ancestor and predecessor, artist Noah Purifoy. Born in Alabama in 1917, Noah Purifoy, after serving in World War II, spent most of his adult life in Los Angeles as an artist, activist, and educator. In 1989, he relocated near Blair Lane in Joshua Tree, High Desert. For the last fifteen years of his life, Purifoy created nearly 120 sculptures, before he passed away at eighty-six on March 5, 2004. The caretaker of Noah Purifoy’s Desert Art Museum, Pat Brunty, a resident of Yucca Valley and also an Alabama native, worked closely with Noah during the final years of his life. She and her late husband Roger Brunty, under supervision of Noah, built his theater, Andrea’s Little Theater, in 2000. Pat is a passionate and dedicated caretaker of Noah’s work and is serious about maintaining the sculptures as he last saw them, from picking up trash to removing vandalism and greeting visitors. She believes visitors should encounter Noah’s works with an open mind of interpretation.” — LaToya Ruby Frazier

He talked about Rasta culture and knew a great deal about the African diaspora and the liberation struggles all over the world. Later, we spent time at his house on Hope Road in Kingston. He was great to be around and made everyone feel at home. His poetry and his music are still relevant today. He was a great voice for empowerment and freedom, and he was a friend.” — Kwame Brathwaite

“As the dark clouds of crack cocaine slowly casted [ sic ] their destructive shadows over America during the early 1980s, I saw the urgent need to take to the streets as a concerned citizen and documentarian. Already, a number of young men I knew personally were dying at the hands of other young men I also knew. I felt it was my duty both to warn the youth of the dangers that I foresaw, and to use my camera as a tool to engage and document. Anticipating more death and destruction, I found that photography was the key that allowed me entry into the lives of young people. I would venture out to the local high schools and shopping districts throughout the New York City area, searching for young people to speak to about this growing crisis. To my surprise, almost everyone seemed open to exchange thoughts and afterward stand for a portrait. Those images, in fact, became evidence of the countless exchanges I would have; many new friendships were also forged as a result of these interactions. In making these often-posed portraits, I wanted to capture a spirit of friendship and love. Today, these images serve as a constant reminder of a time before the great crack epidemic that would change life forever.” — Jamel Shabazz

“The dream of the road: the place to escape, to wander, to encounter something beyond what you had imagined you’d find. That’s what led Shortie to leave home to strip in the Girl Show. We intersected while traveling through New England. Journeys are physical and emotional disruptions that involve both body and mind. For me, this journey also meant finding a new path. I followed the carnivals with the desire to make images and share the words of women whose working lives forced them to make extremely difficult choices to launch their dreams.” — Susan Meiselas

Justine Kurland

“After the birth of my son, Casper, in 2004, I began a series of photographs that juxtapose radical representations of motherhood with idealized views of the American West. The project was titled after Adrienne Rich’s seminal feminist text, Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution (1976), in which she analyzes the patriarchal construct of motherhood and discusses why it is such a problematic topic for many feminists. While some theorists would prefer to do away with the body altogether, Rich envisions a new rubric in which the libidinal value of ‘tits and ass’ is replaced by the uterus and clitoris, and women are positioned as the arbiters of their own bodies. This series was my attempt to visualize what that shift might look like—women and children wandering in blissful togetherness through the social space of shared landscapes. I made them mostly for myself during my first years with a small baby, because I couldn’t relate to the depictions of motherhood available to me. These photographs opened up space for me to imagine a different way of being a mother.” — Justine Kurland

“Midway between the documentary and the poetic, my unusual way of looking through the lens integrates what has been experienced and what has been dreamt, into a complex web of historical, social and cultural references. The fragility of ancestral traditions and their difficult survival, the interaction between nature and culture, the importance of ritual in everyday body language and the symbolic dimension of landscapes and randomly found objects are paramount to my career. My work is characterized by an ongoing dialogue between images, time and symbols, in a poetic display in which dream, ritual, religion, travel and community all blend together.” — Graciela Iturbide

Sometimes when you’re traveling in the car all day, on the lookout for life on the fly, a great thirst comes over you and that desire for the next event evaporates immediately upon seeing an old-fashioned diner, I mean the real thing, not some dolled-up imitation serving prepackaged crap, but a place where some degree of reverence for the past lets you know that a milkshake from childhood can be found there. And here’s Scotty’s. Mmmmmm.”— Joel Meyerowitz

New ‘Lee' Trailer: Kate Winslet Stars In Powerful WWII Action-Drama

R oadside Attractions has just dropped the new official trailer for their upcoming action-drama, Lee , starring the incredible Kate Winslet .

Get ready for an intense journey through history, love, and the brutal realities of war.

Set in the late 1930s, as the dark clouds of Hitler’s rise loom over Europe, Lee follows the extraordinary life of renowned photographer Lee Miller (played by Winslet).

Leaving behind her artistic circle in France, Miller heads to London after falling for art dealer Roland Penrose ( Alexander Skarsgård ).

Their passionate romance is soon overshadowed by the outbreak of World War II.

Already making waves in the photography world, Miller lands a job with British Vogue.

However, she quickly finds herself stifled by the era’s rigid gender roles.

Frustrated with documenting only the British home front, Miller defies societal norms and, with the support of her editor Audrey Withers ( Andrea Riseborough ), ventures to the war's frontlines.

Determined to capture the stark reality of war, Miller's lens focuses on the harrowing human suffering caused by Hitler's regime.

Her tenacity and bravery enable her to send powerful, unfiltered images back to the female readers of Vogue, who had been shielded from the war's true horrors.

Miller's relentless pursuit of the truth brings her to the siege of Saint-Malo, where she photographs one of the first uses of Napalm.

Teaming up with Life Magazine photographer David E. Scherman ( Andy Samberg ), the duo produces a series of iconic images that still shape our understanding of World War II.

Their collaboration reaches a climax when they infiltrate Hitler's Munich apartment and take the infamous photograph of Miller in Hitler's bathtub-captured just a day after Hitler's death and the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp.

This film doesn’t shy away from the raw, gritty reality of Miller's experiences.

It showcases her empathetic approach to the victims of war, especially women, and highlights her images that portray both the fragility and strength of the human spirit.

Lee also delves into Miller’s personal battles, revealing a traumatic secret from her childhood that she confronts amidst the chaos of war.

Release Date

Lee is set to hit theaters on September 27.

Don’t miss this gripping portrayal of a woman who lived life on her terms, capturing some of the most unforgettable images of one of history's darkest times.

New ‘Lee' Trailer: Kate Winslet Stars In Powerful WWII Action-Drama

Through the roof

My journey into the surreal, infuriating future of homeowners insurance.

love journey photography

It was already a hectic day when my insurance broker left a frantic voicemail telling me that my homeowner's insurance had lapsed. I felt nauseous and naked. Suddenly, any leak, fire, or tree branch falling onto the hundred-year-old Hudson Valley house that's been in my family for nearly 40 years could wipe out my bank account. I spiraled in shame. How did I let this happen? Did I forget to update a credit card ? Did I miss a bill? Did I do something wrong with the policy? But when I checked my records, even the Travelers website, there was nothing.

A few hours later, my panic turned to bewilderment. When I finally reached my insurance broker, he told me the reason Travelers revoked my policy: AI-powered aerial surveillance. My finances were imperiled, it seemed, by a bad piece of code.

I take privacy and surveillance extremely seriously — so seriously that I started one of the leading think tanks on the topic, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project. But while I study surveillance threats around the country for a living, I had no idea that my own insurance company was using my premium dollars to spy on me. Travelers not only uses aerial photography and AI to monitor its customers' roofs, but also wrote patents on the technology — nearly 50 patents actually. And it may not be the only insurer spying from the skies.

This didn't just feel creepy and invasive — it felt wrong. Literally wrong: There was nothing wrong with my roof.

I'm a lazy homeowner . I hate gardening, and I don't clean as often as I should. But I still take care of the essentials. Whether it's upgrading the electrical or installing a new HVAC, I try to make sure my home is safe. But to Travelers' AI, it appeared, my laziness was too big a risk to insure. Its algorithm didn't detect an issue with the foundation or a concern with a leaky pipe. Instead, as my broker revealed, the ominous threat that canceled my insurance was nothing more than moss.

Where there's moisture, there's moss, and if you leave a huge amount of it on a roof for a protracted period, it can undermine the roof's lifespan. A small amount is largely harmless. Still, treating it couldn't be simpler. Sure, I could have knocked out the moss sooner, but life was busy, and so it kept falling (and growing) between the cracks. Finally, in June, weeks before I knew my roof was being surveilled, I went to the hardware store, spent 80 bucks on moss killer, hooked the white bottle of chemicals up to the garden hose, and sprayed it on the roof. The whole thing took about five minutes. A few days later, much to my relief, the moss was dying. I thought it was the end of an entirely unmemorable story.

Who knows. Maybe if I'd done that a month sooner, Travelers' technology never would have flagged me, never would've said I was an insurance risk. But one of the deep frustrations of the AI-surveillance age is that as companies and governments track ever more of our lives in ever more detail, we rarely know we're being watched. At least not until it's too late to change their minds.

While there's no way to know exactly how many other Travelers customers have been targeted by the company's surveillance program, I'm certainly not the first. In February, Boston's ABC affiliate reported on a customer who was threatened with nonrenewal if she didn't replace her roof. The roof was well within its life expectancy, and the customer hadn't encountered any issues with leaks; still, she was told that without a roof replacement she wouldn't be insured. She said she faced a $30,000 bill to replace a slate roof that experts estimated could have lasted another 70 years.

Insurance companies will have huge incentives to choose against the homeowner every time.

Insurers have every incentive to be overly cautious in how they build their AI models. No one can use AI to know the future; you're training the technology to make guesses based on changes in roof color and grainy aerial images. But even the best AI models will get a lot of predictions wrong, especially at scale and particularly where you're trying to make guesses about the future of radically different roof designs across countless buildings in various environments. For the insurance companies designing the algorithms, that means a lot of questions about when to put a thumb on the scale in favor of, or against, the homeowner. And insurance companies will have huge incentives to choose against the homeowner every time.

Related stories

Think about it: Every time the AI gives the green light to a roof that actually has something wrong, the insurance company picks up the bill. Each time that happens, the company can add that data point to its model and train it to be even more risk-averse. But when homeowners are threatened with cancellation, they pick up the bill for repairs, even if repairs are unnecessary. If the Boston homeowner throws out a slate roof with 70 years of life left in it, the insurance company never knows it was wrong to remove it. It never updates the model to be less aggressive for similar homes.

Over time, insurance companies will have every incentive to make the models more and more unforgiving, threatening more Americans with loss of coverage and potentially driving millions or billions of dollars' worth of unnecessary home repairs. And as insurers face increasing losses due to the climate crisis and inflation, the pressure to push unnecessary preventive repairs on customers will only rise.

A confusing coda to this whole ordeal was what Travelers said when I reached out with a detailed list of fact-checking questions and a request for an interview. In response, a spokesperson sent a terse denial: "Artificial intelligence analysis/modeling and drone surveillance are not a part of our underwriting decision process. When available, our underwriters may reference high-resolution aerial imagery as part of a holistic review of property conditions."

How did this make sense given what was written on Travelers' own website and patent applications? Then the precision and slipperiness of the language started to stand out. What exactly counts as the "underwriting decision process"? When Travelers boasts online that its workers "rely on algorithms and aerial imagery to identify a roof's shape — typically a time-consuming process for customers — with close to 90% accuracy," does that classification not count as the underwriting process? And even though Travelers has flown tens of thousands of drone flights, are those not part of underwriting? And if AI and drones aren't actually affecting customers, why file so many patent applications like "Systems and Methods for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Roof Deterioration Analysis"? It felt like the company was trying to have it both ways, boasting about using the latest and greatest tech while avoiding accountability for errors. When I brought these follow-up questions to the company, Travelers did not respond.

Thankfully, my own roof isn't going anywhere, at least not for now. A few hours after my panicked ordeal with Travelers began and I started to scramble to find new coverage, the situation resolved. Travelers admitted that it screwed up. It never conceded that its AI was wrong to tag me. But it revealed the reason I couldn't find my cancellation notice: The company never sent it.

Travelers may have invested huge sums in neural networks and drones, but it apparently never updated its billing software to reliably handle the basics. Without a nonrenewal notice, it couldn't legally cancel coverage. Bad cutting edge tech screwed me over; bad basic software bailed me out.

Part of what is so disturbing about the whole episode is how opaque it was. When Travelers took aerial footage of my house, I never knew. When it decided I was too much of a risk, I had no way of knowing why or how. As more and more companies use more and more opaque forms of AI to decide the course of our lives, we're all at risk. AI may give companies a quick way to save some money, but when these systems use our data to make decisions about our lives, we're the ones who bear the risk. Maddening as dealing with a human insurance agent is, it's clear that AI and surveillance are not the right replacements. And unless lawmakers take action, the situation will only get worse.

The reason I still have insurance is simple consumer-protection laws. New York state won't allow Travelers to revoke my insurance without notice. But why do we let companies like Travelers use AI on us in the first place without any protections? A century ago, lawmakers saw the need to regulate the insurance market and make policies more transparent, but now updated laws are needed to protect us from the AI trying to decide our fates. If not, the future looks unsettling. Insurance is one of the few things that protect us from the risks of modern life. Without AI safeguards, the algorithms will take what little peace of mind our policies give us.

Albert Fox Cahn is the founder and executive director of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, or STOP , a New York-based civil-rights and privacy group.

Correction: August 9, 2024 — A previous version of this story cited a Travelers broker who said the company flew a drone over the author's house. After the story was published, Travelers clarified that any "high-resolution aerial imagery" it used did not come from a drone.

How Photography Changed My Life: My Story of Becoming a Photographer

How Photography Changed My Life: My Story of Becoming a Photographer

What does photography mean to you? In this article, I share my story about how photography changed my life and my journey as an artist. See my ups, my downs, and see what it took me to get where I am today.

It's that time of the year again. All of our friends are doing their 2018 in review or posting their top nines on Instagram. The notebooks open, the pens start clicking, and we reflect on our ups and downs of the previous year and look forward to a new 2019. However, as 2018 comes to a close, my gears run a little differently. This year, I chose to reflect on my entire career as a photographer and reminisce on the journey I embarked on just seven short years ago.

The Beginning: Where It All Started

When we dig through our archives of old work, it's sometimes hard to look at. But the fact is, we all started somewhere. When we look at the work of the great artists in history,  it is easy to say "I can never accomplish that level of work," but we often forget, they were standing in our same shoes when they first started.

My journey to becoming an artist began in 2012, when I started my freshman year at a charter film school. For four years, I attended G-Star School of The Arts, where my passions for photography and filmmaking were ignited. I remember sitting in my first film class, having never picked up a camera in my life, and a few days later, I made my first short film. I remember falling in love with the process of creating something with the camera. After I completed the project, my teacher came over to me and said: "hey, you got a good eye, kid. You should consider doing this as your profession. I think you've got a future in it". After hearing that, it clicked. From that point on, I decided that I wanted to do work with my camera for the rest of my life. I then, in the second week of school, emptied my bank account and bought my first camera.

How I Discovered My Passion for Portrait Photography

When I got my first camera, I was enamored by the beauty the world has to offer. I captured everything under the sun: macro photos of flowers, photos of the beach near my house, corporate events, and portraits. I have to admit, though: I tended to capture nature-related scenes, avoiding anything to do with people.

love journey photography

If you’re focusing on capturing others, you must learn how to photograph yourself first. Find out who you are as a person. Figure out what makes you click. Discover your strengths and your weaknesses.

When I first started capturing self portraits, it was just me staring into the camera with expressionless faces and eyes. But, after hearing Lynda's advice that night, I internalized it, and from then on, I committed to sitting down every weekend for four hours to just photograph myself.

love journey photography

Over the course of the next six months, I slowly began to become more comfortable, not only with photography, but with who I was as a person. The camera soon became my strongest and most distinguished voice. It served as the tool for how I expressed myself, and it was by my side during the blissful moments, like winning awards, and the darkest ones, like on my hospital bed when my lung collapsed. After nearly six months of just photographing myself, I gained enough confidence to start photographing portraits of other people.

love journey photography

My Inspirations

When I was just beginning to find my voice and discover my passion for portrait photography, it was important for me to reference the iconic artists that came before me and learn what made them so great. Some of my biggest inspirations were artists like Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, and Steve McCurry. I was able to dissect each artist's work and takes bits and pieces that later crafted my style. I was drawn to Richard Avdedon's work because of the unique way he connected with his subjects and how he drew out raw, unguarded emotions from them. I remember watching his documentary, "Lightness and Darkness," over a dozen times and being blown away each time. The next person that inspired me was Annie Leibovitz. I looked up to her ability and willingness to  be creative and create memorable photographs that were unique to her. Last was the iconic work of Steve Mcurry. I referenced McCurry's work to gain an appreciation for ingenious compositions and how to find a harmonious balance in the frame using colors.

The Moment It Clicked

For months, I would intensely research my inspirations and discover what made a great image, but it wasn't until one day, a copy of the National Geographic Photo Issue arrived at my doorstep. The moment I saw Steve McCurry's "Afghan Girl ,"  her eyes pierced through the page and right at me. I was profoundly moved by the way the eyes drew me in and how he was able to capture people and bring out the best in the people he was photographing.

love journey photography

With that in the back of my mind, I  took my black mattress out from underneath my bed, and set it up on my back porch, and made a make shift portrait studio. I setup my Canon T4i , 50mm kit lens , and used the sun with a big window as my only light. When I took the one picture that kickstarted my career in this setup,  the realization hit me:  I didn't need the most expensive or modern gear to capture captivating portraits, all I needed was my camera, my passion, and my desire to bring out the beauty in every person I photograph.

love journey photography

The Growth

The moment I realized that the gear was not the thing that was holding me back from creating great work, I devoted every hour of my free time I had to improve my craft. I did dozens of shoots a month, countless hours scouring the web for tutorials on lighting, Photoshop, and everything photography-related, and then went out and applied the lessons I was learning online to my shoots. Action was the key proponent that was moving my work forward. By the time I had reached 2015, I looked back and noticed I had put in over 1,000 hours into photography that year. I then had the realization that this was just the beginning. It was truly humbling to see how much work I put in, but how far I still had to go.

love journey photography

Each year, I would look back on all of the shoots I did that year and would compare the last shot I took to the first photo I ever took in my career. Although the progress seemed substantial, I realized that the key to growth as an artist is to never be complacent with your work. That attitude carried me through the countless failed shoots, as I was only as good as the last shoot I did, and there was always the next photo to take. This mindset gave me the confidence to creating progressively better work year after year.

love journey photography

My Defining Moment as an Artist

How long was it before you first got recognition for your work? For me, it took me four years. Four years of shooting daily, failing countless times, and sleepless nights following my passion before anybody really saw my work. When I started shooting, I would constantly ask myself: "if nobody saw my work, would I still keep shooting?" And the answer was always a resounding yes. In my junior year of high school, I was walking to my next class, and the school callboard caught my attention. There stood a massive, colorful poster from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (an arts and writing completion for high school students). That day, I submitted six of my favorite images to the competition and didn't know what to expect. To my surprise, a few weeks later, I got an email from Scholastic informing me that I had won two gold medals at the national level and was invited to an exhibition and ceremony at Carnegie Hall. So, I hopped on a plane to New York City, and I was overflowing with emotions. I didn't know what to expect. But nothing could have prepared me for what happened that memorable weekend. It would change my life forever.

love journey photography

Finding a Purpose in My Work

With a strong support system and work ethic under my belt, I felt as if I were creating good images: they were well exposed and the connection with the subject was there, but there was something missing to tie it all together. The missing piece to the puzzle was a purpose, a purpose of what I wanted to do with my work. The more I shot, the more I realized that t here is more to photography than just taking pictures. There is the person behind the camera.

love journey photography

Doing Personal Projects

Throughout my career, taking on client projects definitely helped me pay the bills, but it often served as a roadblock in my personal discovery and stunted my creative spark. Ever since my senior year, I started doing projects that share my voice and my visions with the world. The goals of these projects were to help show the amazing people and stories they have to tell the world. I started doing these initiatives during my senior year of high school. The first series I did was called  "The Faces of G-Star" . In this project, I photographed 365 portraits during the last four weeks of my high school career and brought together my community through photography. It all amounted to an exhibition displayed in the hallways of the school.

love journey photography

I also used personal projects as a way to stay inspired and keep innovating. In January of 2018, I started a series called "A Century of Portraits,"  where I pushed my creativity to new limits. I captured portraits from every decade from the 1920s until now, using 20 lighting setups and building 20 different sets. This was my longest and most intense project I ever did. It taught me to never give up on my dreams, no matter how crazy they seem.

love journey photography

Closing Thoughts

To encapsulate a seven-year journey, I conjured up a few lessons that I have learned to live by every day.

The first is to just keep shooting. I discovered that the more I shoot, the more I fail, and the more I fail, the more I learn. I have always lived by this notion ever since I started taking pictures. When I am shooting photos or creating art, I am myself, and without it, I feel like there is something missing from me. This past year, being a full-time college student taking 18 credits, a writer for Fstoppers, and running my own business, I still made time to do over 75 shoots, paid or unpaid, just to keep the creative fire burning.

love journey photography

Secondly, I learned that you should never be complacent with your work and that you are only as good as your last shoot. Using this mentality, it has driven me to create work that I could never had imagined I would be doing and keeps me getting better consistently. If I had been satisfied with one award or great photo, my career would have ended in 2015.

Lastly, if you want to succeed in this industry, you must stay true to who you are. There’s no one that can do it better than yourself. Being unique and true to yourself is the one determining factor that will set your work stand out from the rest. The only competition you have is yourself and being the best you could be. Don't waste your energy focusing on someone else's dreams, go out and conquer yours.

Photography is more than just taking pictures, its a neverending process of self-discovery, accomplishments, and failures. So, in the spirit of the new year, look back at your old pictures and see how far you have come since the beginning. Photography, to me, means never giving up on dreams, having the persistence to keep shooting , and a vision to change the world one photo at a time. What does photography mean to you? How has it changed your life?  Share your experiences in the comments below.

Couldn't imagine what it'd feel like to see your image printed at the awards you'd won... What a rush!

Also the early versus recent shots are charming. Some of my early shots are hilarious to look back on!

It was beyond priceless. Flew up there and had no idea. That picture ended up on their traveling exhibition and their facd for the whole year in all their marketing. Crazy feeling to be apart of history like that. Feel free to share them below! Would love to see!
