SPECIAL CREW

Some crew you just can’t get in the time portal, from beholds, or even event packs. The following characters are available only by voyage rewards, gauntlet rewards or by fusing multiple others. Fierce Guinan is now available as an achievement award and Colonel Worf reportedly shows up in time portal packs now and then.

I moved the Captain Avatars to their own page here .

Fusion Crew

star trek timelines neelix

So how to you max out The Duras Sisters? Just do what you did above three more times. Fuse all your 1/4* The Duras Sisters together for a Super Rare 4/4* THE DURAS SISTERS! Or you can get The Duras Sisters if you are super lucky at the Dabo Wheel.

star trek timelines neelix

So how to you max out Tuvix? You are going to need three more pairs of Ambassador Neelix + Security Chief Tuvok to make three more 1/4* Tuvix. You don’t have to level up Neelix or Tuvok at all, but one of them has to be 3/3* and the other 1/3* in order to fuse them. Fuse all your 1/4* Tuvix together for a Super Rare 4/4* TUVIX!

star trek timelines neelix

So how to you max out Evolved Janeway? You are going to need three more pairs of Captain Janeway + Mutated Paris to make four more 1/5* Evolved Janeway. You don’t have to level up Captain Janeway or Mutated Paris at all, but one of them has to be 4/4* and the other 1/4* in order to fuse them. Fuse all your 1/5* Evolved Janeway together for a Legendary 5/5* EVOLVED JANEWAY!

So how to you max out One Zero Zero One? You are going to need three more pairs of One Zero + Zero One to make four more 1/5* One Zero Zero One. You don’t have to level up One Zero or Zero One at all, but one of them has to be 4/4* and the other 1/4* in order to fuse them. Fuse all your 1/5* One Zero Zero One together for a Legendary 5/5* ONE ZERO ZERO ONE!

Considering the complexity of this character fusion, you may want to simply use Honorable Citations to make a 5/5* Indulgent Seven because it would be easier.

MIRROR MARINER : Strong in Diplomacy/Command / 8 traits. Mirror Mariner doesn’t even show up on the Gauntlet HOT List (but Admiral Black does). Seems like they have things backwards.

star trek timelines neelix

POWER RANSOM : Strong in Command/Science / 8 traits.

star trek timelines neelix

Omet’iklan : Strong in Security/Engineering / 10 traits. This is the first new Gauntlet Crew since July 2023, which I think is more reasonable. Mirror Mariner and Power Ransom were 3 months apart, and Mirror Mariner and First Flight Archer were only 2 months apart. That being said, it took me a year to get First Flight Archer and I have not seen Mirror Mariner or Power Ransom yet. I play every day as a considerably strong Captain, so what’s up with that. I guess we’ll see if I magically get Mirror Mariner in March of 2024. *** Close… April 12th, 2024.

I am not entirely sure if you can acquire these crew anywhere else, but I’ll tell you this: I have multiples of each, all from The Gauntlet… EXCEPT… I have no Locutus of Borg and he was discontinued from The Gauntlet before I started playing, so… *April 8, 2020 : I got an email from a Captain named James. He says that he has pulled a Locutus of Borg as a Gauntlet Reward, so there’s hope!

* * April 24, 2020 : GhuruDude  sent me an email that Locutus is the reward for completing 20K Gauntlet rounds. I have done the Gauntlet pretty much every day for over 2 1/2 years at this point, and I am no where near 20K. That might because I personally find the Gauntlet almost as annoying as the Arena, but at least it’s not required to complete your daily tasks.

***December 20, 2021 : it took over 4 years, but I finally got a Locutus in the Gauntlet – which is awesome, because it would take me like 7 years to get 20,000 rounds.

***December 13, 2023 : I am currently at 19,600. It will indeed take almost 7 years to get there.

Once upon a time, you could purchase Captain Beverly Picard in the Honor Hall, much like Kahless the Unforgettable – but not for long. She is absolutely the most powerful in the combined Command/Medical skill for The Gauntlet. I don’t know if you can still acquire her at all, but I haven’t seen her since. She is available for 100,000 honor.

*Jan 10, 2020 – I got an email from a Captain named Mike and he says that Captain Beverly is still in his Honor Hall. I hope that’s true for everyone that doesn’t have her yet. – ek

*Feb 20, 2020 – an email from Captain James confirms that Captain Beverly is still in the Honor Hall. Why DB removed her once I bought her (and not Kahless), I have no idea.

Added April 9, 2024 in the Honor Hall for 100,000 honor. Jeezaloo, they waited a whole month this time. THIS is why I keep 100,000 honor in reserve.

Summary [ ]

After the USS Voyager detects a variety of flower that may prove to be a useful nutritional supplement, the captain sends Lieutenant Tuvok and Neelix to collect plant specimens, including a local breed of orchid, to bring back to the ship. While on the planet , the two have a debate about enjoying nature and Neelix is attempting to have fun, to which Tuvok replies " We are not here to have fun. We are here to collect samples. "

Back on the ship, Captain Kathryn Janeway is informed by Chakotay that there is some trouble with the transporter, specifically a "minor glitch in the molecular imaging scanners ," which B'Elanna Torres says will be fixed by Ensign Kim in "a few minutes."

As they return, a transporter malfunction causes only one pattern to materialize. The organism appears to be similar to both Neelix and Tuvok; wearing clothing that is the color of a Starfleet uniform, but the texture of Neelix's shirt.

Act One [ ]

Upon finding this unidentified lifeform on the transporter pad, Kim calls for security, intruder alert. He asks the intruder to identify himself, and he responds that " I am Lt. Tuvok… and I am Neelix ," appearing most confused. He suggests that they go to sickbay , where The Doctor identifies that it is indeed a merger of Tuvok and Neelix, as well as the orchids collected on the surface of the planet.

Kes , under The Doctor's suggestion, takes the person to the science lab, where he recognizes that Kes is having difficulty with the situation due to her close personal relationship with Neelix and her close tutelage under Tuvok. Kes questions him as part of the procedure, whereupon he tells Kes that he seems to have the memories of both men, but a single consciousness. He then realizes that he will need a name, and after deciding against Neevok, settles on Tuvix . As instinct, Tuvix refers to Kes as "Sweeting", a name Neelix often called her; this is something that clearly brought discomfort to both Tuvix and Kes.

Act Two [ ]

Janeway comes back to sickbay and talks with Tuvix, who is restless and wants to get back to duty. He decides he would rather assume the tactical post than the mess hall. Janeway isn't quite ready, but invites him to the next senior staff briefing. There, the crew discusses the transporter accident that created Mr. Tuvix, but they can not find the reason for the malfunction. Tuvix suggests symbiogenesis , a process where instead of pollination of mating, lifeforms can merge with a second species, using Andorian amoeba as an example. After a bit of convincing themselves it's possible with humanoids, they hypothesize that the orchids that they were transporting from the surface with them was the catalyst for their merging. Using lysosomal enzymes , the plant was able to symbiotically scramble both of them, merging them into one organism. Janeway agrees to send a shuttle down to get more flower samples in the morning.

Possessing both Tuvok's Vulcan logic and Neelix's charming personality and sense of humor, Tuvix easily integrates with the crew and becomes a valuable member. Bestowed with the personalities and qualities of both Tuvok and Neelix, he is not only a capable security officer but also becomes a better chef . However, for many crew members, especially those close to Tuvok and Neelix, the loss of their friends and peers is not as easily accepted. Kes , in particular, is experiencing much grief over the loss of Neelix.

Act Three [ ]

Tuvix gets happily to work the next morning, fixing a proximity detector glitch in the security subroutine which Tuvok had said would take days, much to Janeway's surprise. Tuvix explained that he had a hunch. He's then called down to the transporter room for the first test of their theory. On the planet, Torres and Paris gathers flowers and Kim transports them up. Indeed, the flowers merged together. The crew attempts the same with various plant combinations, and comes up with a variety of exotic and wonderful creations. Nevertheless, all attempts to undo the change are met with catastrophe. The Doctor explains to Janeway and company that the problem is still unsolved, but promises to keep trying. However, he warns Tuvix may be this way for months, even years, and the possibility is there that the condition is irreversible.

This impacts Kes greatly. Later, in her room, she prays for Tuvok and Neelix with Ocampan prayer tapers when Tuvix visits. She expresses a bit of loneliness, but Tuvix says she has him. Tuvix says he still loves Kes just as he does T'Pel . This shocks Kes. She says she doesn't know him, and is uncomfortable with his love given Tuvok's wife. She soon asks him to leave, and Tuvix does so, politely kissing her on the cheek and saying he'll be there for her before he goes.

Act Four [ ]

Kes stops by the captain's quarters to talk about her feelings regarding the situation. The captain points out that the feelings Kes is having about the loss of Neelix are similar to the feelings the entire crew has been having about being stranded in the Delta Quadrant .

Over the next two weeks, the crew starts to adjust to Tuvix who proves himself to be a capable tactician while also turning out to be (according to Janeway's log entry) a better cook than Neelix. He keeps a respectful distance from Kes, while proving to be an able advisor to Janeway just as Tuvok had been. As a result, he is less regarded as an accident but more like a member of the crew.

After much research however, The Doctor finally finds a way to reverse the process by radioactively labeling one half of Tuvix's genome, so the transporter can separate the two individuals. Everyone is very hopeful and excited about the prospects of having Tuvok and Neelix back, except for one person: in all their efforts and joy over being able to bring back the two, the one thing the crew has not taken into account is that Tuvix does not want to die, thus sacrificing his life to bring back the two crew members.

Act Five [ ]

Captain Janeway – who must speak for Tuvok and Neelix who are not there to speak for themselves – now faces a moral dilemma: bring back two crew members who have loved ones waiting for them by sacrificing a man who has become a much liked and trusted friend over the past few weeks, rather than merely a transporter accident. She attempts to convince Tuvix to undergo the procedure, telling him that both Tuvok and Neelix would give up their lives to save another. Despite this, Tuvix is still completely unwilling to undergo it arguing that while Tuvok and Neelix are gone, he is already there and he just wants the right to live.

Later, Tuvix goes to Kes and pleads with her to speak to Captain Janeway in support of allowing him to live. Kes then goes to Captain Janeway and tells her what Tuvix asked of her. Janeway is angry that Tuvix put Kes in the middle of the debate, but Kes considers she was in the middle from the beginning. Despite what Tuvix asked of her, she is unable to support him. Distraught, she knows Tuvix has done nothing wrong but desperately wants Neelix back. She then breaks down in tears, guilt-stricken as Captain Janeway tries to comfort her.

After much soul searching and painful deliberation, she decides that Tuvix has to undergo the procedure. She orders him to report to sickbay but Tuvix refuses, stating that this was nothing more than an execution. He attempts to get someone on the bridge to defend him, but no-one is willing to. He then attempts to make a run for it when Security arrives to escort him. Seeing that he has no choice, he forgives the crew saying he understands what they all feel, agrees to go sickbay, but tells everyone they'll have to live with the consequences.

When arriving in sickbay, The Doctor informs the captain that he cannot perform the procedure. As a physician he has pledged to do no harm and will not perform a procedure that would end Tuvix's life, especially as Tuvix is explicitly refusing to undergo it. Therefore, Janeway is left with the task of having to perform the procedure herself. She is successful: Tuvix is gone and Tuvok and Neelix are both finally restored.

While Kes is overjoyed to have both her partner and mentor back, Janeway simply acknowledges the two and leaves, knowing that she will need to live with the moral consequences of her actions.

Memorable quotes [ ]

" A name… I can see why The Doctor's finding it so difficult to choose one… why don't you call me… Neevok? Wait… this is better… how about Tuvix! "

" … I've been poked and prodded in organs I didn't even know I had! "

" Do you mind telling me what's going on here, crewman? " " We're making dinner. " " I see. Alright, everybody out! " " On whose authority? " " Chief of security or head chef, take your pick. Out, out, out! "

" We've created a monster. "

" I don't want to die. "

" Sex! " " I beg your pardon? "

" At what point did he become an individual, and not a transporter accident? "

"Each of you is going to have to live with this. And I'm sorry for that. For you are all good, good people. My colleagues. My friends. I forgive you."

Background information [ ]

Title, story, and script [ ].

  • Working titles that this episode had are "Untitled Tuvok/Neelix", "One", and "Symbiogenesis". [1] In fact, the episode was known by the latter working title throughout the installment's development and production. ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 16 )
  • Despite appreciating the usual output of the freelance writers who contributed the story for this episode, staff writer Kenneth Biller thought this episode's earliest version was too comical. " The guys who wrote the story, Andrew Price and Mark Gaberman , are really smart and have a lot of fun, high-concept ideas, " Biller commented. " Their story leaned a bit too heavily on the slapstick elements, however. " ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 28, No. 4/5)
  • Ken Biller then took over responsibility for the episode. " I ended up taking it over and completely rewriting it, " he said. " It was [a] tricky episode, because it could devolve into something farcical. It is another one of those semi-hokey sci-fi premises, sort of the opposite of what I got in ' Faces ' […] We wanted to do something a little more serious and philosophical [than the original plot] and it began to emerge as we talked about it that there was something interesting there once you got past the hokiness of the set up. It started out as a joke. What do you call the guy? Neelok? Tuvix? It almost felt like a '60s sit-com. Brannon [Braga] and I even [came] up with a little theme song. So the trick was to see if we could actually make something compelling out of it. " Thus, the writers experimented with the notion of making Tuvix greater than either Tuvok or Neelix alone and asked themselves what would happen if the Voyager crew found a way to return Tuvix's two constituent parts. ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 28, No. 4/5)
  • Initially, the episode would have ended with Tuvix realizing, through some event or the reaction of the crew, that, for the greater good, he had to submit to the procedure of being split apart. " For a while that was the idea, " recalled Ken Biller, " But then we began to talk about it and consider what if he really wanted to survive and he doesn't want to die and be killed. Michael [Piller] posed that question to me so I give Michael a lot of credit. " ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 28, No. 4/5)
  • Ken Biller then aimed to dramatize Janeway's dilemma at the episode's climax as much as he could. He explained, " I hoped to create tension at the end where it would be difficult for anyone watching to know what the right thing to do was […] I wanted to keep asking the audience, just keep poking at the audience. There isn't an answer […] It was an opportunity to show [Janeway] making the really tough decisions which captains are faced with. " ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 28, No. 4/5)
  • The episode's final script draft was submitted on 2 February 1996 . [2]
  • Tuvix actor Tom Wright was unsure if he could discern a moral in the episode's plot. " Not one that I can really pick out immediately […] There isn't any moralizing, " Wright observed. " It's just a story about a character, and you follow that character during the time he is alive. You watch the birth and the life and the death of one character in one episode, and there is no struggle between good and evil. It's purely a no-win situation. " When asked if he thought Tuvix should be spared the separation at the episode's conclusion, Wright stated, " I think it was inevitable that he would be separated. There would be no drama without that separation. So, I completely agree that he should have been separated. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )

Cast and characters [ ]

  • Neelix actor Ethan Phillips was originally considered for the role of Tuvix. Director Cliff Bole was pleased, however, that this casting idea was ultimately not given the go-ahead. " It was better to just kind of get a little different take on the character, " Bole said. " Ethan is so identifiable. He might have had a problem trying to give Tuvix the elements of Tuvok's character. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 15 )
  • When Tom Wright received a call from his agent about the available role of Tuvix, Wright was immediately eager to take the part. " I felt that it would be unique to create a totally different character, " he said, " that had never been created on Star Trek before. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 20 , p. 58) Wright had never seen Star Trek: Voyager before but knew Ethan Phillips and Tuvok actor Tim Russ personally, having often auditioned for the same roles as Russ and previously acted in a play with Phillips. Required to audition for the character, Wright felt his best course of action would be to play a combination of the personalities and styles of those two Voyager cast members. ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 ) The audition won him the role of this episode's title character. Cliff Bole recalled, " I picked him because I had seen a lot of the work he has done. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 15 ) After Wright was cast as Tuvix, the staff of Voyager sent him a few video tapes of past episodes from the series. The actor noted, " From those, I decided which aspects of each character to put into the part. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )
  • While creating such a composite character, Tom Wright was continually unsure exactly how his performance would end up. This was because the role of Tuvix in this particular installment took Wright into unfamiliar territory. He recalled, " Every now and then a character, situation or work experience forces you outside of your strength, and you have to perform in an area that is a little bit unknown. I did a lot of that in 'Tuvix', so I was completely unsure of how it would turn out. I'm very confident of my ability as an actor, but in this particular circumstance I wasn't sure how it would all pay off. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 20 , p. 58)
  • Another problem that Tom Wright encountered while working on this episode was that he had little or no help from Voyager 's writers and producers. " I wish I could have felt a little more support from the top end, " Wright admitted. " I take it very seriously when someone hands me a character and says, 'Tom, we want you to play this role.' I don't consider that role to be my total universe, subject only to my jurisdiction and discretion. I believe acting is a collaborative form. I think that when people write a role and they create a character, they've got a specific thing in mind, and I like to know what that is. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 20 , p. 58) Wright also remarked, " When you're playing a character like Tuvix, which is very difficult to perform because you're taking two well-known characters and blending them into one, and you're essentially firing arrows in the dark at a very small target, you need support and guidance […] I'm not asking anyone to hold my hand, because I've been acting for [more than 25] years. It was just a cumulative thing. And it was curious to me, because I've worked with everyone from Francis Ford Coppola to John Sayles ; all types of people, and I've seen many different ships in the water. I wasn't quite sure why some things were being done the way they were. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )
  • Another challenge that Tom Wright was presented with was dealing with the episode's technobabble . " If you're not used to that type of language being written and delivered in a very specific manner, it can throw you. It took me a few days to really get it down, " the actor admitted. " I asked Bobby [ Robert Duncan McNeill ], 'How do you do this?' He gave me a few tips and helped me out. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )
  • In summation, Tom Wright described this episode as "a demanding work experience." ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 20 , p. 59) However, Wright was prepared to deal with such difficulties. " There were bumps and potholes in my Star Trek experience, " he remarked, " and I think that goes along with any work. " Ultimately, the experience of working on this episode wasn't an entirely negative one for Wright; he noted, " It wasn't like I had a horrible time. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )
  • Despite the difficulties, Tom Wright was aware that he had to make Tuvix a likable character, to accentuate the importance of the character's "death" at the episode's conclusion. " I knew the character's warmth had to be present at all times, " the actor stated, " so that over the course of the show, the rest of the characters would warm up to him. And the reason it becomes so difficult [for Janeway to separate Tuvix at the end] is that they've all grown attached to him. They've all taken a certain amount of delight in this new individual. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )
  • One aspect of this episode that Tom Wright enjoyed was working with Kes actress Jennifer Lien . " Working with Jennifer was one of the greatest things about working on that show, " Wright enthused. " I think she's very talented and I really like how she works as an actress. We also just had a lot of fun. She was really easy to work with and we had just a real good time in those scenes. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 20 , p. 59) Wright also said, " My scenes with Jennifer were my favorites because I really liked her. She was fun to work with, and we had a lot of laughs […] Jennifer has a long emotional history with her character, and I'm just stepping into mine. We're called upon to play fairly romantic and emotionally packed scenes together. And when you step into that territory with someone that you know has never been there before, it can be a trying process. But Jennifer was a 10. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )
  • Jeri Taylor was very pleased with Tom Wright's performance as Tuvix in this episode. " The remarkable thing, " Taylor stated, " is that we found an actor who lets you actually buy this wacky premise because you can believe this actor as Tuvok and you can buy him as Neelix. " ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages )
  • However, director Cliff Bole believed that Tom Wright, despite being a talented actor, was overly challenged by the role of Tuvix. The director explained, " Tom is a good actor, and […] he prides himself on being Shakespearean . But he got overmatched with the part. Star Trek is not an ad-lib format. They are very strict about their words. Tom does have the ability to do a little winging, and I think he thought he could do that. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 15 )
  • At the end of Star Trek: Voyager 's third season , Ethan Phillips cited this episode as one of several whose scripts excited him because, by reading each one, he discovered something new about his regular character of Neelix (other such episodes being " Investigations ", " Fair Trade " and " Rise "). ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 28 , p. 62)
  • A scene that actor Robert Picardo found notable was the one wherein his character of The Doctor, citing the Hippocratic Oath , refuses to comply with Janeway ordering him to be the person responsible for separating Tuvix into Tuvok and Neelix. Referring to Janeway and The Doctor, the actor commented that the scene was "an interesting moment for both characters." ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 10 )
  • A certain line of dialogue from this episode that Janeway actress Kate Mulgrew struggled with saying was, " At what point did he become an individual and not a transporter accident? " Mulgrew later referred to this line as "a dandy", commenting that doing lines in the Briefing Room set made saying them all the more difficult. Torres actress Roxann Dawson exclaimed, " Oh, that's the worst. " ( Starlog , issue #231, p. 50)
  • Cliff Bole was highly pleased with Kate Mulgrew's performance in the episode's penultimate shot. " That last shot I did with Kate, as she's walking into the camera, she told the whole story in her face. She gave a great performance. I only asked for a few things; she brought that look and emotion to work with her. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 15 )
  • Yet another challenge that Tom Wright had to deal with, during this episode's production, was the makeup for Tuvix, although the actor had past experience that helped him endure the prosthetics. " I had these contact lenses in and I couldn't see anything, " Wright laughed. " But it wasn't really that hard. I did Creepshow 2 and Tales From the Crypt , so at least I was familiar with having to work with makeup. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )
  • One of the reasons why Cliff Bole believed that Tom Wright struggled with his role here was due to the arduous preparatory process of applying the makeup before he was ready to be filmed. " That has happened more times than anything I can think of in all the Star Trek shows I've done, " Bole remarked. " I run into it with really competent actors who come in and they read for the part and nail it, and then, Bang!, you paste that stuff on their face. They feel it all day long and they're not used to it, and that subtracts from their performance and their ability to concentrate. By the time you get into the second day, they're beat! That had a lot to do with Tom's case. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 15 )

Reception [ ]

  • Cliff Bole was ultimately happy with the episode's final form. " We didn't have troubles, really, just developments as we went along in the process of getting the show. It was well-accepted and liked by the producers, and I agree. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 15 )
  • Michael Piller cited this episode (together with the earlier second season installment " Lifesigns ") as an example of "some marvelous material" that showed that, by this point, Ken Biller had become "the poet laureate of Star Trek fourth season," even though this episode was in the second season of the fourth live-action Star Trek series. ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 28, No. 4/5, p. 77)
  • This episode achieved a Nielsen rating of 5.6 million homes, and an 8% share. [3] (X)
  • Janeway's dilemma at the end of this episode proved to be controversial. Ken Biller commented, " Different people had different points of view about it […] I got a lot of mail about it. People were really moved. It provoked a lot of discussion about what Janeway had to do. " ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 28, No. 4/5) In fact, according to the unauthorized reference book Delta Quadrant (p. 120), this episode was by far the most debated installment from Voyager 's first five seasons, especially on the Internet , over Janeway's decision to separate Tuvix back into Tuvok and Neelix.
  • The makeup that Tom Wright wore for his appearance in this episode limited the amount of feedback he received, regarding the role of Tuvix, simply because people didn't know he had played that part. ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 ) Nevertheless, he was still often recognized for having appeared in this episode. ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 20 , p. 59) " It has generated some interest and that's good, " he stated. " I've heard from a few people. Every now and then, I'll trot out that I was Tuvix, and people are pretty excited about it. " Wright was also aware of the episode's popularity and suspected that part of why it was so popular was due to its lack of moralizing. " That might be one of the reasons people tend to like the episode so much, " he supposed. ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 )
  • Cinefantastique rated this episode 3 out of 4 stars. ( Cinefantastique , Vol. 28, No. 4/5, p. 105)
  • Star Trek Monthly  issue 20 , p. 58 scored this episode 4 out of 5 stars, defined as " Trill -powered viewing".
  • The book Delta Quadrant (p. 120) gives this installment a rating of 8 out of 10.
  • Following this episode, Tom Wright hoped to play the character of Tuvix again. " I'm sorry to see Tuvix go, " the performer admitted. " Anything can happen in the world of fiction, though. Tuvix could reappear, and if he did, I would be only too glad to step back into that role because it was a fun one. " ( The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine  issue 13 ) Wright also related, " I think that in all fairness, if I were to play Tuvix again, it would be a lot easier simply because I'd know what I'd be walking into. " ( Star Trek Monthly  issue 20 , p. 59)
  • While writing the third season Star Trek: Enterprise episode " Similitude ", Manny Coto tried to avoid making that installment too much like this one. ("Similitude" audio commentary , ENT Season 3 DVD )
  • In her Science of Star Trek series, Becca Caddy praised the episode's moral dilemma, " The mission of Starfleet, or the Enterprise at least, has always been: "to seek out new life", and these stories show us that life can take many forms—hybrid, artificial, rock-like creatures. In determining who or what is truly alive and whether they have agency, we are forced to watch our favorite characters make difficult decisions and live with the consequences. " [4]

Continuity [ ]

  • In common with many episodes before it, this episode was criticized as being derivative of other episodes in the Star Trek canon, including TOS : " The Enemy Within ". ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages )
  • Ethan Phillips believed that, despite some intimations of a possible romantic relationship between Paris and Kes earlier in the series, this episode proved that any such possibility would not actually happen. Regarding the potentiality of the romance, Phillips declared, " Absolutely not! After 'Tuvix', where she just couldn't live without me, it's obvious Kes loves Neelix, loves him deeply and richly and needs him. " ( Starlog , issue #231, p. 51)
  • Voyager 's science laboratory is seen for the first time in this episode.
  • Tuvok 's interest in orchids was introduced in " Tattoo " and revisited in " Alliances ".
  • Neelix's choice of "cheerful" Vulcan song begins with the lyrics " Oh starless night of boundless black ") The fifth season episode VOY : " Night " later reveals that he in fact suffers from nihiliphobia when actually confronted with nothingness.
  • Right before the re-separation, Captain Janeway gestures to a biobed and Tuvix sits on it. There is a visible strip of orange tape on the cushion indicating where the actor should sit, which is noticeably absent directly before and after the brief sequence.
  • The process inadvertently responsible for the title character's creation is revisited in the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode, " Twovix ", where Chief Engineer Andy Billups and Dr. T'Ana experienced the same type of transporter accident and a fused individual, self-named T'Illups , was formed. Captain Carol Freeman researched how Captain Janeway dealt with this situation and attempted to come to a more humane solution to this situation.

Biography [ ]

Neelix was born in 2337 on Rinax in the Delta Quadrant's Talax system , a son of Eximar and Axa . Following the slaughter of his entire family by the Haakonians in 2355 , Neelix became a spacegoing trader until a fortunate encounter with Voyager in 2371 , which saw him become guide, cook and morale officer, and " ambassador " for the Federation starship . Neelix remained aboard until 2377 , when he joined with a group of Talaxians thousands of light-years away from Talax . ( VOY episode & novelization : Caretaker ; VOY episodes : " Parallax ", " Jetrel ", " Homestead "; VOY novel : Pathways )

Neelix had a job as a swimsuit model for a few years on Talax . ( ST reference : Star Trek Cookbook )

Aboard Voyager [ ]

Neelix came aboard Voyager in 2371 after he provided the starship with helpful information involving the Caretaker . He soon became an extremely versatile member of the Voyager crew . He would be its head chef (albeit to the dissatisfaction of much of the crew), navigator, ambassador, and morale officer. ( VOY episode & novelization : Caretaker )

Later that year, he lost his lungs to the Vidiians . He had to spend several days in sickbay with holographic lungs created by The Doctor . The Vidiians later transplanted a lung from Kes to save Neelix's life. ( VOY episode : " Phage ")

Also in 2371, he confronted Ma'Bor Jetrel man who responsible for the creation of the Metreon cascade that destroyed Rinax.( VOY episode : " Jetrel ")

In 2372 he was temporarily fused with Lieutenant Tuvok to create the figure known as Tuvix . He was instrumental in helping the crew survive on an alien world after the Kazon stole Voyager and marooned the crew. These skills were seen many times throughout his Starfleet career. ( VOY episodes : " Tuvix ", " Basics, Part I, Part II ")

In 2373 he found that he knew little of the space beyond the Nekrit Expanse . He then went directly against Starfleet protocols in order to obtain a map of the Expanse. ( VOY episode : " Fair Trade ")

Neelix was killed in an incident aboard a shuttle mission. He was brought back by Seven of Nine 's nanoprobes after being dead for 18.3 hours. This caused him a great deal of stress because he did not see the afterlife he had been taught about for decades. Commander Chakotay helped him through this experience. ( VOY episode : " Mortal Coil ")

He later encountered a Talaxian colony deep in the Delta Quadrant and chose to leave Voyager and spend the remainder of his time there in 2377 . ( VOY episode : " Homestead ")

After Voyager [ ]

In 2381 , B'Elanna Torres met with Neelix after she took a shuttle to the Delta Quadrant to rendezvous with Project Full Circle. By this time, Neelix had married Dexa. While surprised, he was quite happy to see Torres and Miral Paris . ( VOY novel : Unworthy )

Later the same year, Neelix reunited with his old friends again when he retrieved the shuttle stolen by Meegan McDonnell and returned it to Voyager . ( VOY novel : Children of the Storm )

In early 2410 , Rear Admiral Tuvok asked Ambassador Neelix to convince the Hazari to join the fledgling Delta Alliance . Neelix traveled with the Baxial to the Neles system, where he met Hazari representative Y'Dren . Y'Dren presented the Alliance with a list of demands directed at the Benthan Guard . Neelix directed an arriving Alpha Quadrant Alliance captain to contact the Benthan high justicar , who monitored the situation from a Benthan battleship nearby. High Justicar Mathan agreed to some of the terms, convincing the Hazari to join the Delta Alliance.

Part of the contract was that the fugitive criminal Captain N'Keden would be turned over to Benthan authorities. N'Keden's Hazari battleship was lured to the Neles system but he resisted arrest. The Baxial , the AQA vessel and Mathan's ship fought together to subdue N'Keden. He surrendered and was arrested by the Alliance, his ship and crew were spared. ( STO - Delta Quadrant mission : " Alliances ")

Personal Relationships [ ]

Neelix was especially close to the Wildmans, providing care for Naomi while her mother, Samantha, was on duty or on away missions. Samantha deemed Neelix as Naomi's godfather. Naomi would often times confide in Neelix for personal advice or school work. Neelix provided assistance to Janeway at virtually any opportunity. This included first contact situations, navigational hazards, and the occasional proverbial splash of water when the Captain would overwork herself.

Quotes

Seven of Nine : You will be assimilated.

Neelix : No time for that now. Maybe later.

Neelix : I feel like I'm all alone.

The Doctor : You *are* all alone. I'm only a holographic projection.

Neelix : Kaplagh!

The Doctor : Tallyho.

Neelix : I will not rest until I see you smile.

Tuvok : Then you will not rest.

Neelix : [broadcasting to the whole crew]  Good morning, Voyager. I want to tell you about a friend of mine. I first met this man almost a year ago, and to tell you the truth, I didn't like him much. He seemed a little too cocky, little too sure of himself. A lot of people had questions about him. He'd proven he'd pretty much sell himself out to the highest bidder, go wherever the wind blew him. So, people wondered... could you trust this person when things got tough? Would he stand side by side with you, or would he let you down, when you needed him most? But the fact of the matter is - he proved himself right from the beginning. I wouldn't be alive right now if it weren't for him... and the same goes for many of you. It took me a while to realise it. Like a lot of people, I was too caught up in first impressions to see the truth that was right in front of me. I overlooked his bravery because I was focusing on his brashness. I ignored his courage because I saw it as arrogance. And I resented his friendliness because I mistook it for licentiousness. So, while this man was giving us his best every minute of every day, I was busy judging him. And now, he's leaving. I'm proud to say that in spite of my narrow-mindedness, Thomas Eugene Paris became my friend. I'm gonna' miss him. No more laughs over a game of pool. No more sitting up into the wee hours swapping stories. No more complaints about my cooking. Goodbye, Tom. I think I speak for more of us than you might imagine when I say you're gonna leave an empty space when you go. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Neelix : I don't suppose you've ever heard of the Vulcan Rumarie?

Tuvok : The Rumarie is an ancient pagan festival.

Neelix : Full of barely-clothed Vulcan men and women, covered in slippery Rillan grease, chasing one another.

Tuvok : That has not been observed for a millennium.

Neelix : Well, it's time to bring it back!

B'Elanna Torres : [over the com]  Lieutenant Tuvok, report to engineering.

Tuvok : Acknowledged.

[walks away]

Neelix : [shouting after Tuvok]  I've been thinking of a Rumarie theme for the mess hall next week. Lots of high-fat, greasy foods, and if people want to take off their clothes and chase one another... Well, it certainly wouldn't hurt morale around here.

Neelix : Why don't we sing a song while we toil, hm? It'll cheer you up. Now, I've been studying Vulcan music. Do you know that lovely tune that starts "Oh starless night of boundless black...

Tuvok : That "lovely tune" is a traditional funeral dirge.

Neelix : I know. But it was the, er... the most cheerful song I could find in the Vulcan database.

B'Elanna Torres : [while in the Mess Hall]  Its the pylon again. Every time we get close to crossing the threshold... the subspace torque rips the nacelle off the shuttle.

Harry Kim : What about a duranium alloy? We could try using it to reinforce...?

B'Elanna Torres : No, I've thought about that already. It's too brittle.

Neelix : [Neelix comes over to they're table, which is covered with technical PADD's]  More coffee?

[they all lift they're mugs]

Neelix : Ah... you look like a happy bunch.

Harry Kim : We've hit a wall.

Neelix : Oh, well... maybe I can help?

Tom Paris : Great! You know anything about quantum warp theory or multispectral subspace engine design?

Neelix : No, but I'm a quick study.

[takes a seat]

Neelix : What are we working on?

B'Elanna Torres : [she thinks this problem is out of Neelix's league]  Do you have anything to eat?

Neelix : Er, sure. There are some Kalavian biscuits somewhere in the kitchen.

B'Elanna Torres : I guess I'll go find them myself.

[to Harry]

B'Elanna Torres : Fill em' in.

Harry Kim : [clears his throat, trying to phrase this delicately]  Neelix, it would take too long to...

Neelix : What are you saying? I'm not smart enough? I'll have you know I did two years as an engineer's assistant aboard a Trabalean freighter. I'm well versed in warp theory.

Tom Paris : Ok. Ok. We'll tell you. We're trying to break the maximum warp barrier.

Harry Kim : Nothing in the universe can go warp 10 - it's a theoretical impossibility. In principle, if you were ever to reach warp 10, you'd be travelling at infinite velocity.

Neelix : Infinite velocity? Got it! So... that, that means... very fast?

Tom Paris : [that is an understatement]  It means that you would occupy every point in the universe simultaneously. In theory, you could go any place in the wink of an eye. Time and distance would have no meaning.

Harry Kim : If Voyager achieved warp 10... we could be home in as long as it takes to push a button.

Neelix : Wow! And you're working on this?

Tom Paris : We discovered a new form of dilithium in the asteroid field we surveyed last month. It remains stable at a much higher warp frequency.

Harry Kim : The problem is... every time we simulate crossing the transwarp threshold... the nacelles get torn off the ship.

Neelix : I remember there was a time when I lost a warp nacelle going through a dark matter nebula.

Tom Paris : This is a very different problem.

Neelix : I realise that. I'm just using it as an example. As the ship went through the nebula, it sent out a dark matter bow wave. Eventually, so much pressure built up it tore the nacelle from its housing. Now, maybe the same thing is happening to you?

[that's got Tom thinking about something]

Harry Kim : No, the simulations don't indicate any kind of subspace stress in the nacelles.

Tom Paris : Wait a minute. What about the shuttle itself?

Harry Kim : What do you mean?

Tom Paris : [getting excited]  Maybe we've been looking in the wrong place? What if the nacelles aren't being torn from the ship? What if the ship is being torn from the nacelles?

Harry Kim : The hull of the shuttle is made of tritanium alloy. At the speeds we're talking about... that alloy could depolarise...

Tom Paris : ...and create a velocity differential. The fuselage would be travelling at a faster rate of speed than the nacelles.

Harry Kim : [Tom's enthusiasm is catching]  That means we just have to set up a depolarisation matrix around the fuselage.

Tom Paris : That's it! Neelix, you're a genius!

[they both give Neelix a pat on the back before leaving the Mess Hall]

Neelix : [to himself]  I have no idea what they just said.

[Neelix passes B'Elanna on his way back to the kitchen, taking a biscuit from the tray she's holding, leaving her wondering what went on while she was gone]

[Neelix is throwing assorted cooking implements at an invading Kazon soldier]

Neelix : I hope that crushed your skull, Kazon pus-hog!

Screen Rant

A voyager character perfectly summed up what’s wrong with star trek’s entire premise.

The Star Trek franchise's core premise has led to its immense success, but a Voyager character perfectly summed up why that premise is flawed.

  • Star Trek's core premise of exploration and discovery has led to success, but it also comes with fundamental flaws and risks that often get the crew into trouble.
  • Neelix's criticism of the crew's constant exploration is valid, as they often go into missions unprepared and find themselves in dangerous situations that could have been avoided.
  • Despite the challenges faced by Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, Captain Janeway's commitment to upholding Starfleet principles and continuing the mission of exploration was the right decision, resulting in the first true cataloging of the Delta Quadrant and countless discoveries.

Although the Star Trek franchise's core premise has led to success, a Star Trek: Voyager character perfectly summed up some of its fundamental flaws. Unlike some science fiction shows, which focus on dystopian futures, Star Trek 's basis has always been a utopian ideal that prizes explorations and discovery above everything else. This has served the franchise well over the years and has been carried throughout all the various projects, of which Voyager was no exception. Even stuck in the Delta Quadrant, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) made sure to continue Starfleet's mission to seek out new lifeforms, planets, and anomalies while traveling through space.

Voyager would have felt strange without this premise, but the crew's exploration of the Delta Quadrant did get them into trouble on more than one occasion. In season 1, episode 5, "The Cloud," Neelix (Ethan Phillips) even got angry with Janeway for her commitment to Starfleet protocols when the USS Voyager took on the exploration of an unpredictable nebula. In his fit of frustration, Neelix explained that he thought poking into every corner of the galaxy just to see what was out there put the ship and crew at unnecessary risk, one they couldn't afford given their precarious status stranded so far from home.

Neelix Was Actually Right: Star Trek Crews Take Too Many Risks

Despite the fact that what Neelix said pokes holes in Star Trek 's core premise, his assessment was actually a fair point. In every Star Trek show , there is at least one episode where the crew starts out with a seemingly simple exploratory mission that quickly goes wrong when they realize they went in badly prepared. Starfleet's ideals mean that starship crews always operate with the best of intentions, but quite often, they aren't as cautious as they could be, and end up getting into tricky diplomatic or combat situations that could have been avoided if they had scoped things out better.

This bore out in practice in "The Cloud" when Voyager discovered that what they had thought was a nebula was actually a lifeform, and that they had unintentionally hurt the creature in their effort to mine it for omicron particles to bolster their flagging energy reserves. The rest of the episode was spent trying to figure out a way to help the lifeform heal, which the crew ended up doing but which caused the ship some damage and depleted their fuel reserves even further. "The Cloud" was just one in a long line of episodes where Star Trek 's premise got a show's characters into trouble.

Why Star Trek’s Core Mission Was Sometimes A Bad Idea For Voyager

Of course, the franchise's core mission was sometimes a worse idea for Voyager than it was for previous Star Trek shows. Unlike other starships, Voyager had no backup to call on for help when things went wrong. Voyager was alone in the Delta Quadrant for the majority of the crew's journey home, and when a mission went awry, had to figure out a way to deal with it themselves. Often, this was at the expense of the crew's well-being or their limited supply of resources, something that was absolutely demonstrated by "The Cloud."

Despite this, Janeway's decision to uphold Starfleet principles throughout Voyager's journey was ultimately the right decision. Many of the crew needed something familiar to cling to in the face of so much uncertainty, and when the ship did eventually return to Earth, they had accomplished something no other Starfleet crew had: the first true cataloging of the Delta Quadrant and the discovery of countless new aliens, planets, and spatial anomalies. Compromising on exploration in order for the ship to get home faster would not have made Star Trek: Voyager feel like a true Star Trek show.

Setting the record straight on Neelix from Star Trek: Voyager

Neelix started out quite the questionable character on Star Trek: Voyager.

When we first meet Neelix, he’s tending to his debris field where he seemingly would be selling off junked starship parts that he procured via numerous, possibly underhanded ways, and selling them off for profit in order to survive in the Delta Quadrant. The one commodity he seemingly could not obtain was something that Federation ships were able to synthesize in an instant: water. Upon realizing this, he decided to take advantage of the Voyager crew’s generosity and innocence to free his girlfriend from enslavement at the hands of the Kazon.

Neelix proved himself to be quite the conniving individual, always seemingly having friends of questionable morals in the right places throughout his region of the Delta Quadrant. The one being whose existence he held above all else was Kes, his 3-year-old Ocampan girlfriend. Since the Ocampans live abbreviated lives, with the eldest Ocampans typically living only eight or nine years, by comparison, that puts Kes to be about the equivalent of being in her mid-20s to early 30s, alternatively, it was always my understanding with all of Neelix’s life experiences, that he was fairly significantly older than Kes…not only in physical age but also in cognitive age as well, which kind of makes him a bit of a creeper. However, just as I wrote previously here , I always viewed Voyager as the story of the redemption of Nick Locarno/Tom Paris & I think the same can easily be said about Neelix as well!

Over the course of Voyager’s 7-year series run, Neelix became quite the upstanding citizen onboard.

Once we got past Neelix ‘s jealousy and over-protectiveness towards Kes, he became a solid, trusted source for Captain Janeway to rely upon for information when entering new regions of the Delta Quadrant. As Morale Officer (a position made up specifically for him), he made some great bonds with most of the crew. So much so, that when Ensign Samantha Wildman became pregnant with Naomi, she chose Neelix to be Naomi’s Godfather — a position he took VERY seriously! He read Naomi bedtime stories, checked her room for monsters, and even cared for her while Samantha fulfilled her Starfleet duties on away missions.

Also, while Seven of Nine became a motherly figure for the Borg kids, it was Neelix that she occasionally asked for parenting advice along with The Doctor. Of all of the Voyager crew, Neelix needed to work the hardest to earn the respect of, Lieutenant Commander Tuvok — who would often use a holographic version of Neelix to test his mental & emotional boundaries when he felt compromised. In fact, in one of the final conversations between the two, Tuvok told Neelix that he considered him the most resourceful individual he had ever met, which is extremely high praise coming from a Vulcan! In fact, just before leaving the ship as a Starfleet Ambassador, Tuvok even demonstrated a bit of a “dance” to appease him.

Truth is, the Neelix character grew by leaps and bounds throughout Voyager’s 7-year run, and aside from Tom Paris, I don’t believe that any other character experienced the kind of renaissance that Neelix did, and I think Ethan Phillips did an excellent job in portraying that character. His final walk from the turbo-lift, down the crew-lined corridor was one of the greatest send-offs any character in any Star Trek series ever received, it’s hard not to get teary-eyed while watching Neelix say goodbye to the family he had made for 7 years to rejoin and lead fellow members of his own race.

A Complete Timeline of Star Trek

Star Trek stands as one of the most enduring and influential pop-culture franchises on the planet. From a comparatively humble cult TV series, it has expanded into an entire universe of speculative future history encompassing dozens of movies and TV shows. With more projects on the way, it doesn't look to slow down anytime soon. That can lead to a convoluted timeline, particularly in the early days when no one expected it to last as long as it has.

Star Trek: The Original Series producers didn't worry about what came before or after their show, and series creator Gene Roddenberry had a way of simply ignoring episodes he considered sub-par. Writers Michael and Denise Okuda are largely credited with firmly establishing a canonical Star Trek timeline during the expansion of the franchise following Star Trek: The Next Generation . That's resulted in a definable, if complicated, fictional history to chart the rise of the United Federation of Planets and its development through centuries of galactic history. Here's a breakdown of the Star Trek in-universe timeline, divided roughly by era.

The Early Years of Star Trek's Timeline Are Vague

Wrath of khan creates star trek's biggest plot hole, and the real-life explanation is hilarious.

The early years of Star Trek 's timeline run into a number of real-world continuity issues. This was most notable with the Eugenics Wars , which originally took place in the 1990s, but has since been retconned to an indeterminate point in the future. They're linked to the rise of genetically augmented humans who conquer and rule much of the planet, led by the notorious Khan Noonien Singh. The Eugenics Wars culminate in a Third World War, and the ensuing nuclear apocalypse all but destroys civilization. Khan and his followers escape the planet in a stasis ship, and await their rendezvous with Captain Kirk in The Original Series episode, "Space Seed."

The most important event after that arrives on April 5, 2063, subsequently known as First Contact Day. As depicted in Star Trek: First Contact , scientist Zefram Cochrane develops a faster-than-light engine and tests it in his vessel, the Phoenix . A Vulcan survey vessel notices the feat and makes first contact with Cochrane in Bozeman, Montana that evening. With the Vulcans' help, humanity quickly gets back on its feet. Hunger and poverty are eliminated by the early 22nd century, and even war itself has ended on the planet by 2113. A world government is established in 2150, uniting the globe under a single unifying body for the first time in human history.

Enterprise Reveals The Founding of the Federation

Why star trek: enterprise used shuttles instead of transporters.

The events of Star Trek: Enterprise begin just one year later, in 2151, as humanity launches its first earnest efforts to explore the galaxy. Captain Archer and the crew of the Enterprise spearhead the effort, resulting in key first contact with such important species as the Andorians and the Tellarites. It also comes with new conflicts, notably the Xindi crisis of 2153 which lasts for nearly a year. That is followed in 2156 by the Earth-Romulan War , which stretches out over four years. Humanity, Andorians, Vulcans, and Tellarites all join forces against the common threat, resulting in the defeat of the Romulans and the establishment of the Neutral Zone.

The victory leads immediately to the founding of the United Federation of Planets in San Francisco in the year 2161, organized by the four victorious species. Several decades of peaceful exploration and expansion follow, led by Starfleet vessels who set out to explore in the name of peace, coexistence, and scientific understanding. That marks the end of the events of Star Trek: Enterprise and a relative blank spot in the timeline for a little less than a century.

The 23rd Century Brings War, Peace, and The Original Series

The complete history of vulcans in the federation era of star trek.

With the exception of a few peripheral events, the next few decades are quiet as far as canon events go. The timeline picks up again properly with the beginning of Star Trek: Discovery as open war breaks out between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in the year 2256 . The war lasts for a year and proves costly to both sides, ending thanks to efforts of the USS Discovery to stabilize the political situation in the Empire. The Discovery vanishes approximately one year later during the battle with the rogue AI Control , jumping ahead in time to the 32nd century in the process.

With the end of the war comes another era of peaceful expansion and exploration. That encompasses the events of both Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: The Original Series , as Starfleet "boldly goes where no one has gone before." As the 23rd century continues, the franchise shifts to the first six big-screen Star Trek movies. That culminates in the events of Star Trek VI in 2293, resulting in the Khitomer Accords and long-term peace with the Klingon Empire . Captain Kirk is presumed dead a short time later as depicted in the movie Star Trek: Insurrection , officially bringing The Original Series era to a close.

The Next Generation Kicks off The 24th Century

10 best star trek: the next generation characters.

The early decades of the 24th century are another blank spot in the Star Trek calendar, marked by a few notable events but otherwise leaving a good deal open for speculation. The most important development during that time is the Battle of Narendra III in 2344 , where the Federation vessel USS Enterprise-C sacrifices itself to defend a Klingon colony from Romulan attackers. This results in a formal alliance between the Federation and the Klingons.

Star Trek: The Next Generation officially begins in the year 2364, with the Federation enjoying a golden age of peace and prosperity. The Enterprise-D under Captain Picard serves as Starfleet's flagship, conducting missions of diplomacy and peaceful exploration. The Enterprise first encounters the Borg in 2366 , during The Next Generation's Season 2 episode "Q Who." The Borg invade the Federation a year later, and come within a hair's breadth of destroying the Earth before the Enterprise crew saves the day during the Season 4 premiere, "The Best of Both Worlds Part II."

The Dominion War and the Delta Quadrant Mark DS9 and Voyager

How star trek: the next generation disserviced this fan-favorite character.

In 2369, a stable wormhole to the unexplored Gamma Quadrant opens near the planet of Bajor, kicking off the events of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . What at first seems a conduit to a whole new sector of space soon becomes an existential threat. The Dominion is a powerful totalitarian government in the Gamma Quadrant ruled by a species of shape-shifting Changelings. The Dominion sets its sites on the Alpha Quadrant , and launches an invasion in 2373. The Federation is forced to rally its long-time foes in the Romulan Empire to its side, who join with Starfleet and the Klingons to finally defeat the Dominion in 2375.

If that wasn't bad enough, the Borg launch another attack on Earth in 2373, and again come perilously close to assimilating the entire Federation before Jean-Luc Picard and his crew put a stop to them during the events of Star Trek: First Contact. Amid it all, the USS Voyager vanishes in the year 2371, having been flung into the far reaches of the Delta Quadrant and launching a seven-year journey to return to Federation space.

The 24th Century Ends with Peace and Old Enemies

Star trek: lower decks paid off a deep space nine character arc.

The end of the Dominion War marks the beginning of another extended period of Federation-led peace. Voyager returns from its long journey in 2378 , and the Enterprise averts a surprise attack from the Romulan Empire in 2379 during the events of Star Trek: Insurrection . Beyond that, peace prevails, which leads the way to lighter Star Trek series such as Star Trek: Lower Decks (which begins in 2381) and Star Trek: Prodigy (which begins in 2383).

That comes to an end with the implosion of the Romulan Empire, whose sun is doomed and whose most militant factions sabotage any chance at Federation aid by orchestrating the destruction of the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on April 5, 2385. Two years later, the Romulan sun goes nova, seemingly killing Mr. Spock, who was attempting to halt the explosion and creating the Kelvinverse timeline of the 2010s big-screen Star Trek movies. It renders the Romluans a scattered and defeated people. Jean-Luc Picard is able to repair some of the damage done to the two powers in Star Trek: Picard, Season 1, then rejoin with his crewmates in Season 3 to defeat a unified Dominion/Borg attack on the Federation in the year 2402.

The Far Future Beckons

'we broke barriers': star trek: discovery star celebrates show's diversity.

Star Trek canon comes to a halt at the beginning of the 25th century after the events of Picard Season 3. That leaves a vast stretch of centuries that have not yet been defined in Star Trek canon, and will presumably be filled in by series to come. In that time, the Federation continues to expand until it is more than double the size it was in the 24th century. Then disaster strikes in the form of an event called The Burn, which instantly renders all dilithium in the galaxy inert in the year 3069. Every active warp engine detonates, causing widespread disaster and rendering interstellar travel exponentially more difficult.

The arrival of the Discovery in the year 3188 -- beginning with the premiere in Season 3 -- changes all of that. After destroying the tyrannical Emerald Chain, Captain Michael Burnham and her crew set about restoring the shattered Federation, which leads to the events of Discovery's final three seasons. With the series bowing out at the end of Season 5, subsequent Star Trek projects will have a new final frontier in the 32nd century -- uncluttered by earlier shows -- thanks to the leap forward in time.

Star Trek is currently streaming on Paramount+.

The Star Trek universe encompasses multiple series, each offering a unique lens through which to experience the wonders and perils of space travel. Join Captain Kirk and his crew on the Original Series' voyages of discovery, encounter the utopian vision of the Federation in The Next Generation, or delve into the darker corners of galactic politics in Deep Space Nine. No matter your preference, there's a Star Trek adventure waiting to ignite your imagination.
