Oceania Cruises sails to all seven continents and visits more than 600 ports in more than 100 countries. The line recently introduced a new base fare, which includes round-trip airfare and Wi-Fi.

Cabin types: The cruise line offers cabins at various prices, ranging from inside staterooms to oceanview rooms with furnished balconies. Suites are also available in a variety of sizes. Oceania cruise prices

Oceania sailings range in price depending on such factors as cabin type, ship, destination and length of trip. Keep in mind that Oceania is an upscale brand that prides itself on gourmet cuisine and onboard service — and its rates tend to reflect that.

For those looking for a weeklong cruise in the Caribbean, a trip departing from Miami and stopping in Mexico, Belize and Honduras starts at $1,399 per person. If you’re interested in Europe, a 10-day trip from Rome to Barcelona starts at $2,470 per person. Both rates are based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom.

Those who want to make like Magellan can book the 180-day around-the-world cruise starting at $48,499. A shorter, but still luxurious, 72-day itinerary in Asia starts at $19,599. Suites will increase the cost of the cruise but add more space for you to relax in your cabin.

The cruise line has announced a new base fare package called “simply MORE,” which comes with a host of inclusions. These include round-trip flights, airport transfers, shore excursions and a beverage package for all guests in the cabin.

What is the best Oceania ship?

Oceania has eight ships in a range of sizes; the smallest accommodates just under 700 passengers, while the largest can hold up to 1,250. The cruise line has a low staff-to-passenger ratio, between 1.5 and 1.7 staff per passenger, which allows for more personalized service. Many of its ships have capacity for 684 passengers, which means they can feel less crowded than larger ships.

The best Oceania cruise ship is its newest one — Vista. Every room has a veranda, plus space for storage, rain showers in the bathrooms and upscale furnishings.

What is the newest Oceania ship?

The newest Oceania ships are the Vista, which set sail in 2023, and the Allura, which is scheduled to sail in 2025. Both of these are on the larger end of its fleet, with a capacity for 1,210 passengers.

They’re also part of a new class of Allura ships, which feature more onboard amenities and features compared with the other six ships in the fleet. Some examples of this on the Vista include four new dining venues, concierge-level staterooms for solo travelers and larger standard staterooms with over 290 square feet of space.

Oceania Cruises loyalty program: Oceania Club

Oceania Club members earn credits on each cruise they take, with more points awarded for longer cruises. For example, a cruise that lasts up to 24 days earns one credit, cruises for 25-34 days receive two credits, and trips longer than 158 days get 15 credits.

Earning status can take a while unless your first cruise is lengthy. If you’re looking for elite status on a cruise line, Oceania isn't especially rewarding for people who cruise occasionally.

Oceania Club elite status tiers

The Oceania Club loyalty program has seven levels:

President’s Circle. 

With your first cruise, you automatically become a Blue member after signing up. The more nights you spend on Oceania ships, the higher your status tier and benefits. Here’s how to reach each tier along with some of the best benefits at each level.

How to earn Oceania Club credits

Travelers earn credits based on the length of a sailing. Even a three-week cruise earns just one credit, which means it can take some time to reach the first elite tier — Bronze, which requires five credits. Even though they’re part of the same holding company, you won’t earn Oceania credits when sailing with Norwegian or Regent Seven Seas.

How to redeem points

There are no points to redeem with Oceania Club. The primary purpose of the program is earning credits to reach different elite status tiers. At each level, there are various benefits you receive when on a cruise.

The 2011-built Oceania Marina cruise ship is one of the fleet's newest vessels , with sistership Riviera . Both liners were constructed by Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente shipyard (in Genoa Italy ) and designed by the Norwegian marine architecture company Y&S "Petter Yran and Bjorn Storbratten".

The vessel (IMO number 9438066) is currently Marshall Islands /France- flagged (MMSI 538003668) and registered in Majuro .

A modified version of this design is Oceania's new ALLURA-Class represented by the ships Vista (2023) and Allura (2025).

History - construction and ownership

Oceania Cruises is a US passenger shipping company and luxury travel brand owned by NCLH-Norwegian (shipowner), Between April 2007 and September 2014, the company (as part of "Prestige Cruise Holdings") was owned by Apollo Management LP - one of the world's largest private investment equity funds. Since September 2014, Oceania and the sister company RSSC-Regent are owned by NCLH - acquired at the total cost of USD 3 billion. Oceania ships offer luxury cruises with relatively shorter itineraries, as well as Around The World voyages up to 180 days in length.

Much of the inspiration for the layout of Marina came from such high-end establishments as Miami's Mondrian Hotel, the Palm Court at NYC's Plaza Hotel and Bouchon dining venue in Napa. Aquamar Kitchen is a wellness-themed dining venue (introduced on Oceania Vista in 2023). This signature restaurant is complimentary and without reservations. It offers wellness-inspired food and beverages including smoothies, fresh-pressed juices, mocktails (made with Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Spirits), energy bowls, avocado toasts, salads, wraps, tuna tacos, chicken sandwiches, Oceania's "Impossible Burger".

The poolside Ice Cream Bar serves the gourmet Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream as well as milkshakes and smoothies.

Waves Grill in the evenings transforms into an alfresco trattoria/casual restaurant serving Italian food including fresh-baked pizza by the slice and gourmet desserts.

Oceania Marina Wiki

Oceania Marina ship is the first of the line's two newbuilt vessels. Her sister and fleet mate is  ms Riviera . On September 2, 2014, the NCL Norwegian company purchased the company "Prestige Cruise Holdings" (owner of Oceania and  RSSC-Regent Seven Seas ) for USD 3,025 billion, thus becoming the official owner of all vessels in both fleets.

The line's owner NCL Norwegian received the Government's permission to operate cruises to Cuba from the USA, with three Oceania ships - Marina (starting at the end of 2016), Regatta  (starting in 2017) and Insignia (Nov-Dec 2017). Oceania ships operated a variety of itineraries, including a circumnavigation of Cuba (with stops in ports  Cienfuegos  and  Havana ) and also visiting Cuba as part of some  Panama Canal transition cruises .

The Apollo Group company provides all Oceania ships with the entire onboard hotel product and services. This includes administration, food staff (preparation and serving), housekeeping staff, also the vessel's provisioning and crewing. Other cruise lines served by Apollo are  Thomson UK (Marella Cruises)  and  RSSC-Regent .

Oceania Marina refurbishments review

The ship's drydock refurbishment in May 2020 (by the OceaniaNEXT project) resulted in several deckplan changes (details to be announced soon). What is known so far is adding a new cabin category (Owner Suite) designed by Trevor R. Howells (Los Angeles-based interior design firm).

Owner Suites are 2-room cabins furnished with Ralph Lauren Home furniture. The color scheme is white-navy blue-camel-creme. Upholstery and fabrics are in melange (stripes and solids), with pops in silver-gold-metallic. The Suite's foyer features premium wood paneling and stone flooring (limestone, black cabochon). The in-cabin bar is mahogany and with a quartzite stone top.

The Suite's living room has floor-ceiling windows, Grimaldi-weave sail white fabrics, a self-playing piano (made from polished ebony-black hardwood), a sectional sofa (with navy blue cushions), mahogany lounge chair. The dining room has a Mayfair table and Barrett Medium Knurled chandelier (natural brass). The Master Bedroom has a King-size bed, Mayfair Bergere armchairs, and nickel-trimmed lighting.

The Suite's wraparound balcony is premium teak-floored and fitted with custom-made (by Ralph Lauren) outdoor lounge furniture.

Drydock 2024

The scheduled drydock in 2024 (April 30-May 18) will be conducted at Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz Spain .

The multi-million refurbishment project includes the complete renovation of all passenger staterooms.

All public spaces (hallways, stairs, bars/lounges and dining venues - Grand Dining Room, Polo Grill, Martinis, Horizons, The Library) will be renovated, receiving new carpeting, furnishings, fabrics, lighting fixtures, artworks, Tuscan marble as well as refreshed upholstery.

The Penthouse Suites will be redesigned and completely refurbished, to receive new custom-made furniture, wardrobes and cabinetry, carpets and upholstery, lighting, more power outlets and USB ports. Penthouse Suites' bathrooms will receive Italian marble throughout, more drawers and larger showers.

All top-tier staterooms (Oceania Suites and above) will be redesigned and revamped.

The ship's three existing restaurants will be renovated and three new dining venues/culinary options will be added.

The new Ice Cream Bar (poolside) serves the gourmet Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream as well as milkshakes and smoothies.

The Polo Grill (steakhouse) will receive new carpeting, dining chairs, and window treatments.

The upgrade will feature new furnishings, remodeled bathrooms, lighting and additional outlets and USB ports.  Oceania Riviera features larger staterooms than the line's older ships. MIAMI, April 08, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE: NCLH) (together with NCL Corporation Ltd., “Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings”, “Norwegian”, “NCLH” or the “Company”) today unveiled the most comprehensive new build order in its history—a total of eight state-of-the-art vessels, representing nearly 25,000 additional berths, with new classes of ships for each of its three award-winning brands—and the construction of a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the Company’s private island destination in the Bahamas and its top-rated Caribbean port of call. This unprecedented decade-long strategy enhances its product offering, guest experiences, and operational infrastructure, supporting the Company’s sustained leadership in delivering innovative cruise vacations.

The new ship orders across all three brands are scheduled for delivery over a ten-year period, between 2026 and 2036. Following the delivery of four Prima-Plus class ships from 2025 through 2028, Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to take delivery of four approximately 200,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of nearly 5,000 guests, in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, which are subject to financing 1 . Building on the success of its Allura Class ships, the last one being delivered in 2025, Oceania Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 86,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 1,450 guests in 2027 and 2029. Lastly, following the award-winning Explorer Class ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 77,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 850 guests, in 2026 and 2029. Details regarding the ships’ amenities, staterooms, dining, recreational, efficiency, sustainability and other features will be announced in the coming months.

The ship orders for Norwegian Cruise Line remain subject to financing, currently underway.

New Pier Development at Great Stirrup Cay

The new pier development at the Company’s private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay, is slated to break ground in summer 2024 and be completed by late 2025 with an investment of approximately $150 million. The new pier will be constructed to simultaneously accommodate two large vessels of the Company’s current and future ship classes. The pier development will enhance the guest experience on Great Stirrup Cay, and along with Harvest Caye, the Company’s private island in Belize, continue to provide guests with world-class destinations in the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Orders 8 New Ships for 3 Brands from Fincantieri

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings today unveiled the most comprehensive newbuild order in its history—a total of eight vessels, representing nearly 25,000 additional berths, with new classes of ships for each of its three brands—and the construction of a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island destination in the Bahamas and its top-rated Caribbean port of call, according to a press release.

The new ship orders across all three brands are scheduled for delivery over a ten-year period, between 2026 and 2036.

Following the delivery of four Prima-Plus class ships from 2025 through 2028, Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to take delivery of four approximately 200,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of nearly 5,000 guests, in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, which are subject to financing.

Building on the success of its Allura Class ships, the last one being delivered in 2025, Oceania Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 86,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 1,450 guests in 2027 and 2029.

Lastly, following the Explorer Class ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 77,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 850 guests, in 2026 and 2029.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth. It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round.”

In partnership with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri , each brand will design their new ship class and focus on creating the largest, most efficient, and innovative vessels of their respective fleet.

This cruise company just ordered 8 new ships — and thinks other lines will, too

Despite a recent surge in cruise popularity , the number of new cruise ships under construction is set to taper off after 2024. However, one company plans to keep building them and has indicated lines will likely follow suit.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings — which operates Norwegian Cruise Line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises — has placed an order for eight new vessels across its three brands, all scheduled to begin sailing between 2026 and 2036. The ships will be part of brand-new ship classes for each of their respective lines. The ships will be built by the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

A competitive advantage

During a special call to announce the new ships, NCLH executives said they placed the orders early because it gives them plenty of time to plan and because they believe other cruise companies are also considering new ships.

"We see the future, we think this is the right strategic direction to go in, the spots are available, and obviously, we want to secure them before the competition does," Harry Sommer, president and CEO of NCLH, said during the call. "We certainly believe that the competitive set will be ordering ships as well."

"Our friends at the other four companies that are regularly ordering ships, they are, to the best of our knowledge, all in advanced talks with shipyards to get ships," Sommer said.

He expressed the importance of being at "the front of the line" to provide the advantage of more time to design a quality product for cruise guests.

"There are only four shipyards in the world that can build ships of any consequential size," Mark Kempa, NCLH's executive vice president and chief financial officer, said. "As the industry continues to build, we have to be more strategic in nature and make sure we have the opportunity to build. It also gives us the time and ability to really design something that is new and innovative for the brand."

Larger ships mean larger profits — and more expenses

Norwegian Cruise Line will see four new ships, set to debut in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036. Each will carry about 5,000 passengers, making them the largest vessels in the line's fleet by nearly 20%. Details about onboard features have not yet been released. However, Sommer said the vessels will combine the best offerings from the line's Breakaway and Prima Class ships .

Ship sizes will also increase for upscale lines Regent and Oceania, which will see two new ships each. Regent will welcome two 850-passenger vessels in 2026 and 2029. Oceania will add two ships that can carry around 1,450 cruisers in 2027 and 2029. Oceania will continue to focus on serving excellent food, while Regent will focus on a higher level of luxury and even more onboard space per passenger.

The reason for NCLH's increase in ship sizes is simple: The larger the ship, the more cabin types it can offer and the more revenue it will generate.

"New ships always garner a premium," Kempa said. "A lot of it is dependent upon ... the premium cabin mix. As the ships get larger and technology improves, we are able to have a better overall cabin mix on each of the new vessels."

With larger ships also come larger costs, especially with the increase in the price of raw materials. Executives aren't worried, though; they cited being operationally strategic and optimistic that cruisers will continue to shell out for extras when they sail.

"It's not just about the cost of the ship; it's also about how we're operating it," Kempa said. "Yes, the cost of steel is more, but we can build the ship at a better cost in terms of value engineering, not necessarily having everything as fancy as maybe it needs to be but putting the value into the ship where it matters — where the customer is willing to pay and what the customer values."

Sommer shared the company's positivity about American consumers. "They value what we offer," Sommer said. "Our product is made to suit their needs and tastes, and they spend a lot of money on board the ships."

Norwegian Cruise Line's next decade in ships

Presently, Norwegian Cruise Line sails 19 ships. Nearly half of them — Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Jewel, Pride of America, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Star, Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Spirit — will reach their 30th year in service within the decade it will take to debut the four newly ordered NCL vessels.

It may be easy to assume NCLH is simply looking ahead to what it might need in 10 years when several of its current vessels will be what is considered old for cruise ships. However, the company's executives said there are no current plans for vessels to leave the fleet. In fact, Kempa noted that they expect their vessels to have an operating life of up to 40 years.

"We're fortunate in the fact that we have a very young fleet, especially for the Norwegian brand," Kempa said. "As our fleets continue to age, we invest in them in a rational, disciplined manner to make sure that they stay relevant. As they age down the road, we will look at opportunities for redeploying those vessels to either other markets or other alternative players throughout the globe, but we have no near-term plans for any sort of disposals or any sort of retirements on that front."

Sommer shared his optimism about the path ahead. "We believe we are very well poised for continued growth in the next decade and beyond," he said.

Private island plans

In addition to building new ships, NCLH announced a $150 million plan to add a two-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, one of two private island destinations it operates. Construction is slated to begin this summer, with an estimated completion date of late 2025. The new facility would accommodate ships as large as NCL's aforementioned 5,000-passenger vessels.

Because the port doesn't currently have a pier, passengers must ferry ashore via tender boats. As such, calls on Great Stirrup Cay are often weather-dependent, and they're subject to cancellation if the wind is too strong or the waves too rough.

"We already have quite a bit built out — zip lines, cabanas, spa, private beach, all types of water sport activities ... people really enjoy that," Sommer shared. "I think when they have the confidence that we're going to go there 100% of the time, we will see a further improvement in the incremental yields that we get today."

Sommer said there are no immediate plans to add amenities to Great Stirrup Cay. Instead, the focus is on building the docking facilities, which are expected to increase the number of visitors to the island by 50% in the first year (from 400,000 passengers annually to 600,000). However, when additions are made, they will likely be amenities or experiences that will cost visitors extra.

"I don't think we're looking at substantial investments over the next few years," Sommer said. "I think there are things we can do that are very cost-effective and would be supported by guests paying additional money for them."

The Drinks Business

Why wineries are teaming up with cruise lines.

Wine brands are having to find new ways to reach audiences in a fragmented media landscape, including on cruise ships. Kathleen Willcox finds out more.

How do get people to buy what you’re selling? The question is as old as time (or, perhaps more to the point here, clocks).

Just a generation ago, brands looking to reach a lot of people at once could place an ad in a hit TV show or a glossy mag targeted at their desired demographic. Zip, presto, and the money would roll in.

Ah, those were innocent times—the concept of appointment television today is un-applicable in a wildly fractured media landscape filled with networks, streamers, social media channels, podcasts and more with cult, but rarely large, followings.

Today, finding a large captive audience undistracted by whatever’s happening on their phones is more challenging than ever.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the return on investment these days on traditional television advertising is dismal—Anne Tuchman, an associate professor of marketing at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management analysed the effectiveness of commercials on sales for 200+ packaged goods, including drinks, and found that companies would have to double their spending to boost sales by just a single percent.

Which is why, despite disgusted guffaws and shrieks of disdain from traditionalists, wine brands are increasingly pouring money into things like influencer marketing. One Ogilvy study reports that 40% of those engaging in influencer marketing have seen improved lead generation and sales outcomes from their work shilling on Instagram.

Brands are also finding a range of other creative ways to reach their desired audience, including, on cruise lines.

The global cruise industry is booming. Valued at US$7.4 billion in 2023, it is expected to reach US$22.6 billion by 2033, for a compound annual growth rate of 11.8 percent, according to a report from Spherical Insights and Consulting.

And it’s not just anyone cruising: it’s the people winemakers want as customers—those who are curious, thirsty for adventure, with cash to spare.

How and Why it Works

“Several of the wineries that I work with [at the California-based Zinfandel Advocates & Producers] have done work on cruises over the years,” ZAP’s executive director, Rebecca Robinson says.

“Because there are so many different cruise lines, and so many cruises that appeal to different demographics and budgets, there is an opportunity to find one with a lot of potential for a brand. For optimal success, I think it’s important for them to think about the match.”

How wines and cruise lines opt to work together does vary, but only up to a point.

Typically, a cruise line— AmaWaterways River Cruises , Silversea, Avalon Waterways, Viking River Cruises and Oceania Cruises are some of the most active wine cruise lines—will approach the winemaker.

“The corporate office arranges all of the details of getting the wine shipped, and they discuss what is expected from the winemaker on board,” says Zhivko Georgiev, a hotel manager AmaWaterways who has overseen dozens of wine cruises during his 15-year tenure with the company. “Typically, the winemaker does one tasting seminar that discusses the wine and history of the region we’re cruising in, and another that covers their own wines. They also do a wine pairing dinner.”

The winemaker is expected to prepare for the topics, and once on board, they meet with the culinary team to taste through the proposed menu for their pairing dinner.

“It is really pretty straightforward,” Georgiev says. “But everyone seems to benefit because the winemaker, even if they’re small, will make a memorable impression on the guests. The guests love it because they get to try a lot of new wines and learn about the history of the region in a new way.”

It benefits the cruise line too, of course.

“Delving into regional wine specialties has become an important part of how travelers experience a destination,” says Kristin Karst, co-founder and executive vice president at AmaWaterways. “A heightened wine focus enables our guests to develop a deeper and more nuanced appreciation for a country, it’s history, culture and people.”

Bringing in a host who can offer their personal expertise and perspective enhances their experience, she explains. Having a vintner bring in their wine is an added bonus.

“Our primary focus is showcasing the local wines of the regions we visit, but we love featuring a North American wine host who brings their own wines on board,” Karst says.

“This adds a layer of excitement and diversity to our wine program, allowing guests to explore different styles and techniques, expanding their palate and understanding of different winemaking techniques globally.”

Reaching a Completely New Audience

Traditional marketing is completely out of reach for most small wineries, so having the opportunity to find a new community of fans on a cruise ship is invaluable, says Paul Toussaint, winemaker and co-founder at Toussaint Cellars Winery in Santa Barbara.

“We still both work two other full-time jobs,” Toussaint says, referring to himself and his wife Gina Toussaint, who handles the business side of their winery. “We sell everything direct-to-consumer so getting in the market is essential for us. When Robert [Schmidt, director of sales and business development at AmaWaterways] asked us if we wanted to host a cruise, it was a no-brainer.”

There were just north of 100 cruisers, and between the seminars, the wine-pairing dinner and the bottle of wine he gifted each room, Toussaint Cellars surely earned a permanent place in the memories of the people on the journey.

Not to mention the added viral marketing bonuses from bottle shot photos posted by cruisers social media, plus the new batch of customers and potential collectors.

Cementing Long-Term Relationships

Other wineries use cruising less as a new marketing opportunity than as a way to cement relationships with long-term supporters, and the cruise lines themselves.

Remi Cohen, CEO of Napa’s Domaine Carneros, says that they do one cruise a year now, usually with Silversea. They invite club members to be a part of a larger cruise offering, with around 40 participants a year, some of whom who have cruised multiple times with the winery.

“We like to provide an opportunity for our club members to engage with the winery in a unique and special setting,” Cohen says. “We select different destinations every year to keep our members engaged.”

The enthusiastic participation of a winery’s club members sometimes surprised even experience cruise pros.

“I will never forget the name Chappellet,” Georgiev says, referring to the popular St. Helena, CA winery. “They brought several of their wine club members, and those wine club members really loved their wines. They prepared 150 bottles for a dinner with 100 guests.

I said, ‘very respectfully, but there is no way that 100 people will each drink a bottle and a half at dinner.’ Our host said, ‘just wait.’”

Georgiev admits that not only did they go through the 150, they had to open additional bottles.

“We went through so much wine, we had to have more sent over from America halfway through the cruise,” he says. “No. I will never forget the name Chappellet.”

Cohen says that their long-term relationship with Silversea has, in addition to reinforcing relationships with their biggest supporters, presented unexpected opportunities to showcase their brand.

“Silversea has purchased our wines to feature on their cruises outside of these special cruise events,” she says.

Nick Palumbo, owner and winemaker at Palumbo Family Vineyards and Winery in Temecula, CA, agrees that while he initially joined AmaWaterways as a host to bolster relationships with Palumbo’s loyal wine club members, there have been several unexpected benefits.

“We have found that the demographic is more diverse than you might expect,” Palumbo says. “There were people on board ranging from families with teens all the way through the more typical retired couples. These trips have also proven to be great ‘friend-raisers.’ They make our wine club members feel a part of something bigger. And we also picked up a few members along the way, people who weren’t familiar with our winery at all.”

Featured Winery Onboard

Brands don’t even necessarily need to host a specific cruise to reap major benefits. As Michael Mondavi, founder of Michael Mondavi Family Estate and co-founder of Folio Fine Wine Partners explains, he founded The Cellars by the Michael Mondavi Family on the Norwegian Escape in 2015 to leverage “exposure to a diverse demographic of guests from around the world.”

“We look at cruise lines as a great marketing tool for our brands, and not just cases sold,” Mondavi says.

The Cellars by the Michael Mondavi Family is featured on five Norwegian ships. They began by featuring family wines, including M by Michael Mondavi, Animo and Oberon, and supplemented the sips with formal tastings and learning experiences.

“It then evolved into winemaker cruises where [his children] Dina [Mondavi], Rob [Mondavi] or myself would sail onboard for a week to meet guests and lead wine tastings and dinner onboard,” Mondavi says.

He says that Slainte Wines, a cruise line brokerage has expanded the focus further, and gotten them key placements on several cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Princess, Holland America, MSC, Disney and Windstar.

“We’ve found that cruise lines are a great way to gain exposure,” Mondavi says. “Guests are on vacation, relaxing and they’re open to trying food and beverages that they may not have tried before. Many go home and seek out these wines to enjoy and share with family and friends.”

Once bitten by the wine cruise bug, hosts tend to become believers.

“Many of our hosts choose to partner with us repeatedly, often hosting a cruise every year,” Karst says. “They are able to deepen relationships with their wine club members, increase exposure of their products, boost sales when they return and grow their wine club memberships.”

Toussaint certainly feels that way.

“I’ve already signed up to host another cruise in Burgundy,” Toussaint says.
