12-Volt and Propane Appliances

When you can’t hook up to shore power, you’ll want your refrigerator, cooktop, oven, and TV to work on 12-volt batteries or propane gas. Avoid residential appliances as they will require a more robust energy draw. 

Solar Prewiring or Manufacturer Solar Packages

If there is even a small possibility that you will add an aftermarket solar package, make sure you look for an RV that is prewired for solar. Better yet, find one that is prewired for an inverter as well, which will allow you to use 110-volt power even while boondocking. The three-way refrigerator and selection of 12-volt, USB, and 110-volt outlets will allow you to keep everything powered whether you’re hooked up at a campground or dry camping. Airstream Basecamp

The Basecamp trailer is designed to pair well with midsize SUVs that many off-road adventurers already own. Large wheels, side skirts, and wheel flares protect the camper from the gravel and debris on unpaved roads. There are four different floor plans available, ranging from 16 to 20 feet in length, and all versions include an onboard restroom with a toilet and shower. Goodyear tires and 12-volt tank heaters also come standard. 

Buyers can upgrade to a 200-watt solar package. Get extra ground clearance with the Basecamp X-Package, which features a 3-inch lift, Goodyear Wrangler tires, and a raised hitch jack pad.

Jayco Jay Feather Micro

Introduced in 2021, the Jayco Jay Feather Micro lineup features four different floor plans designed to take you off the beaten path, while still providing a high level of comfort. The 166FBS has 16-inch diameter Goodyear tires with reinforced wheel wells and is prepped for roof-mounted solar power and prewired for an inverter. It also contains a 55-gallon fresh water tank. The Winnebago Micro Minnie FLX trailer lineup consists of four different floor plans that range from 22 to 22.5 feet in length. The H172BH is particularly attractive to adventurous couples or small families, offering bunk beds and a large dinette with bed conversion.

At less than 22 feet long and less than 4,200 pounds in dry weight, the Micro Minnie FLX is easy to tow for most SUVs and Trucks.

Rockwood Geo Pro 

The Rockwood Geo Pro offers a wide range of floor plans, from a 15-foot travel trailer to a 20-foot toy hauler. A Note on Rig Specs

It’s important to pay close attention to specs when shopping for a travel trailer. Use the VIN (vehicle identification number) to find the towing capacity and payload capacity for your specific tow vehicle.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)

The maximum loaded weight of your trailer as determined by the manufacturer. You should never exceed this weight rating when your RV is stocked with all of your gear, propane, and fresh water. 

UVR (Unloaded Vehicle Rating)

The weight of your trailer as manufactured with no cargo, propane, or water.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)

This is the difference between your UVR and your GVWR, telling you how much weight you can safely add to your trailer. Pay close attention to the cargo carrying capacity if you intend to travel with a lot of gear. 

Tongue Weight

This is the amount of weight pressing down on the hitch ball that is attached to your tow vehicle. It is extremely important to make sure that the tongue weight of a travel trailer does not exceed your tow vehicle’s payload capacity.

The interior aesthetic is also cozier and homier than any other on this list, so if you’re looking for a true “home away from home” wherever you roam, this is it.

Bean seriously ups the ante with its latest, all-new Bean Stock 2.0 towable. At less than 1,200 pounds, it’s one of the most easily towable, full-featured off-road trailers on the market. Thanks to a seamless fiberglass shell, it’s also more durable and leak-resistant than traditional “stick-built” (i.e., aluminum and plywood) trailers. It’s purpose-built from the ground up to be extremely off-road-capable with a 2,000-pound Timbren HD suspension and 27-inch radial all-season tires on 15-inch steel wheels. Upgrading to the off-road package adds a four-inch lift and monster Falken Wildpeak AT3W 235/75R15 tires for even better ground clearance and trail-ready capability.

Most overlanding and off-road trips only last as long as your batteries (or fresh water supply). Colorado Campworks tackles the first problem with its 100% solar-powered NS-1 (Nomadic System One). It’s designed to store more power—up to a whopping 11,000 watt-hours—than any other teardrop trailer we’re aware of. That’s enough to run all of your favorite gadgets and any appliance, including the NS-1’s climate control system, for about as long as the sun is shining. So, you could theoretically just never go back to civilization.

Shopping for any RV—vans, motorhomes, and even off-road travel trailers—is complicated, especially if it’s your first time. There’s a lot to consider, and we can’t cover it all in this post, but here are a few things to get you started:

Assuming you already have a tow vehicle (TV), weight is arguably the most important factor when shopping for a new off-road trailer. That’s because your TV’s maximum towing capacity will dictate the heaviest trailer you can realistically tow (and buy). Be sure to triple-check your manufacturer’s recommendations on this, as it’s not something that should be taken lightly. Thankfully, most of our recommendations come in well under 3,000 pounds, so they’re easily towable by most small to mid-sized SUVs and even some sedans.

The overall length of your off-road trailer is important on the trail, too. Shorter trailers are more maneuverable and give you more flexibility with where you can travel. Longer trailers offer more interior living space and probably more amenities, but they can be a nightmare on narrow forest service roads.

Ground clearance

More difficult trails—those with tons of obstacles, varying heights, and constantly changing terrain—can be challenging or even downright impassable for off-road trailers without sufficient ground clearance. If you’re planning to tackle serious terrain or you don’t want to be restricted in where you can take your new trailer, consider a trailer with as high of ground clearance as possible. This may mean upgrading to an off-road package if the manufacturer offers one.

Off-road suspension

Even on smooth pavement, trailers take a serious beating akin to a constant earthquake while traveling down the road. It’s exponentially worse on rocky, uneven backcountry trails. That’s why it pays to make sure that the suspension on your new trailer is ready for the trail.

Winnebago made a splash in the RV and overlanding worlds when it debuted its Sprinter-based Revel camper van back in 2017. The off-road-centric coach was a distinct departure from the company's well-established line-up of leisure RVs. It doubled down a few years later with the Ford Transit-based Ekko — a more spacious, more capable big brother designed to take you and your gear, well, just about anywhere. Now, the RV maker is upping the ante yet again with its all-new Ekko Sprinter — a Sprinter Van-based class B+ rig that's ready for serious off-road fun.

Get the low-down on the all-new Winnebago Ekko Sprinter camper van With the new Ekko Sprinter, it's clear Winnebago recognizes that size matters. The latest model is bigger in every way than its Transit-based brother. With a 170-inch wheelbase, it's 18" longer, to be exact. That's still compact enough to navigate twisty backcountry roads yet roomy enough to accommodate more amenities, gear, and passengers. The Ekko Sprinter offers belted seating for four adults and sleeping space for three. An optional pop-up adds sleeping quarters for two more for a total of five (in a compact camper van!). Plus, the deep gear garage allows you to pack everything you need and then some (think: a whole arsenal of outdoor adventure gear).

Custom van life vans and over-the-top overlanding rigs have stolen most of the public attention for anyone daydreaming about serious long-term road life. But those aren't your only options. Teardrop trailers, for example, have been around for almost as long as vehicles could tow things. These ultralight travel trailers are designed for minimalists looking to explore the world with only the essentials. While most aren't designed for hardcore off-road use, Bean Trailers doesn't design "most" teardrop trailers. The Bean Stock 2.0 tackles both of these issues with a seamless fiberglass shell that's far lighter (less than 1,200 pounds!), more durable, and more leak-resistant than conventional "stick-built" (i.e., plywood and aluminum) teardrops. Off-Road Campers are travel trailers made to be taken off the beaten path. They are designed to be highly rugged and durable; Off-Road Campers have the features that allow you to stay off-grid for days, weeks, and even months, just perfect for boondocking .

After some extensive research, I have come up with the Top 7 Best Off-Road Camping Trailers list. They are also referred to as overland, expedition, and off-road campers, among many. Let’s get started with my top 10 list.

Bruder Campers

Bruder meaning “brother” is an Australian RV manufacturer with two models of off-road campers in their line-up. The EXP-4 is a rugged teardrop-type camper, while the EXP 6 is more like a traditional pull-behind. However, it is nothing like a conventional pull-behind. This off-grid camper is a serious beast.

The Bruder EXP-6 is available in two different configurations. The EXP 6 has a roof that moves up and down using a roof lift patented by Bruder. The EXP-6 GT has a fixed roof that is taller.

Either version of the EXP-6 can be customized with several available options.

Several technological features make the EXP 6 a great on-road camper. For example, leveling is done with a touch of a button. Not only does it level automatically, but it will also adjust its height depending on the terrain.

Inside is a touch screen that allows you to control lights, suspension, etc. You can also manage those settings from a smartphone app, and you can pre-save your settings as well.

This expedition camper is expensive, starting at $180,000. Still, for those who are passionate about their outdoor adventures and have the money to plunk down on one of the best expedition campers on the market, the Bruder EXP6 is well worth the price.

Black Series Campers

Black Series Campers is a family-owned Australian company with ten years of experience. Their slogan “Camping is better off-grid” perfectly describes their line-up of off-road campers.

They manufacture both tent campers and travel trailers, aka caravans. The HQ12 is my top pick from their models of off-road campers.

The HQ12 is a very capable all-terrain camper equipped with a kitchen, toilet, and shower. It has a sleeping capacity of 4, which is surprising for a trailer this size. There’s plenty of storage space too.

The pop-top will give you additional interior headroom while maintaining its compact design. I couldn’t find any information on whether the pop-top is manual or has an electric lift like the Base Camp by Hower Built .

The suspension on the HQ12 is custom-designed by Black Series engineers. It’s built to allow each wheel to move independently. This will give you a smoother, more stable ride on the road or off the road.

A polybock hitch allows a full 360-degrees of rotation, allowing you to tackle just about any terrain. This is just one of many features of the HQ12.

The length of the HQ12 is 19.6 feet, and it’s 7.8 feet wide with an external height of 8.2 feet.

Overall, I like the Black Series HQ12 of off-road campers. It has excellent features, a well-thought-out design, badass suspension, and a 5-year structural warranty. Prices start at around $50K.

Off Grid Trailers

Off-Grid Trailers is a Canadian company that manufactures three off-grid campers. The Expedition 2.0 is their flagship camper, and with good reason. The Expedition 2.0 is an all-metal off-grid camper designed to easily take on those rugged back roads.

The construction began with a 4-inch C-channel frame (3/16 inch) and sandblasted and powder-coated frame. A 2-inch ball coupler is included.

The Timbren 3500HD suspension adds a 4-inch lift, and you get excellent stopping power with 12-inch electric brakes. This camper rides on 265/70/17 wheels with durable off-road tires.

The Expedition 2.0 is equipped with a nice dropdown outdoor kitchen galley, outside shower with an Eccotemp L5 hot water on demand.

The Expedition 2.0 by Off-Grid Trailers is a very well-designed and rugged expedition camper with a host of excellent features. With a starting price of around $30K, I think this off-grid camper is well worth considering.

Tax Cricket Overland Edition

TAXA Outdoors makes whey they refer to as a NASA-inspired off-grid camper. I’ve reviewed the TAXA Cricket and can tell you it is an excellent camper. It’s not a very big travel trailer , but it is well-designed and packs a lot of features in a small space.

There is an enhanced model call the Overland Edition that adds a more rugged suspension. It’s an axle-less design that adds a 4-inch lift, giving the Cricket 14-inches of ground clearance.

The Lock “N” Roll Hitch gives you 360 degrees of rotation and a 3-axis movement. There is also a swivel jack, heavy-duty stabilizer jacks, and all-terrain tires.

Standard on the Cricket Overland Edition is the two kids’ berth, awning, screen door, shower tent, portable toilet, and Thule bat, which are all options on the regular Cricket.

The only option available on the Overland Edition is a 5,000 BTU a/c unit. The overland is available in white or titanium.

Though a bit pricey, starting at $39,950, it’s a capable off-grid camper that many will love.

Boreas Campers

Built in the USA, Boreas Campers have been manufacturing cutting-edge off-road trailers since 2014. Their brand-new model, the Boreas XT, features a heavy-duty suspension, all-terrain tires and is loaded with off-grid features and capabilities.

When it comes to interior and exterior features, the Boreas XT shines. Exterior features included a Cruisemaster CRS2 axel-less independent suspension, BF Goodrich All-Terrain tires, electric brakes, 100-watt Zamp Obsidian solar panel, and a composite fiberglass exterior among several other features.

Boreas Campers XT Video Walkthrough

Opus Camper

Opus Camper makes several off-road trailer models. The Opus Lite is the one we’ll take a look at here.

The Opus Lite packs quite a bit in a small package. First is its suspension, which is a beefed-up independent suspension just like the one found in the bigger Opus campers. It has been designed to go just about anywhere a 4WD can go.

It’s equipped with an articulating hitch Lock ‘N’ Roll that provides 360-degree rotation, allowing you to tow at any angle without damage.

It also features the Air Opus, an air inflation technology that lets you inflate the tent system in 90 seconds. Essentially, you can set up camp in about 5 minutes.

The Opus Lite comes standard with many features that make it an outstanding expedition camper. Besides the suspension and inflatable heavy-duty tent system, you will also find LED lighting, large windows with screens, removable table 30-amp shore power connection, an RV queen bed, and a stereo system with speakers.

On the exterior, you’ll find a front rock guard, under-body diamond plating, and electric brakes with a standard 7-pin plug. For off-grid camping, you have a 20-lb propane tank holder, a 20-gallon water tank with a 12v pump, and a 1 100amp battery. There is a solar panel port for the addition of an optional solar panel to trickle charge your battery.

Overall, a very capable off-road camper with excellent features and starting at around $20,000.

Schutt Industries Xventure XV-2

The Schutt Industries XV-2 is referred to as a severe-duty off-road camper born of military engineering. I’ve not looked at this camper before, so let’s see what it had to offer.

The Xventure XV2 was originally designed and developed to meet or exceed the performance standards required by today’s military. It features a Huck-Bolted aluminum structure and is more durable, is stronger, and lighter than welded steel products in this class.

What’s unique about the XV2 is that it used over 300 Huck Bolts and absolutely no welding in the chassis. This eliminates the possibility of weld cracking and weld fatigue.

The XVenture XV2 is the ideal off-grid camper for those with a passion for adventure. Pricing for the base model starts at around $14,500 and quickly goes up from there.

Final Thoughts

It’s safe to say that an off-road camper trailer is not for everyone. It’s a small segment of the RV industry; however, that doesn’t take away from the fact that these seven lightweight, off-road campers are innovative and very well-made.

They tend to be on the high end of the pricing range, but you are getting features not found in your typical travel trailers , like twin shock absorbers. If you are one of those who truly like to go off the beaten path and want some comfort, an off-road camper might be just right for you.

Off-Grid Travel Trailers are specifically designed for camping in remote locations where traditional power sources are unavailable. These travel trailers are equipped with features to ensure self-sufficiency. Off grid travel trailers come with solar panels, generators, and freshwater tanks, allowing campers to generate their own electricity and store water. Additionally, off-grid trailers are built with enhanced tires, suspension, and storage capacity, providing better durability and practicality compared to regular travel trailers.

When it comes to travel trailers, off-grid is what it’s all about. The best way to define off-grid is to first define what on-grid is.

The term grid is typically used to describe the collective set of utilities that provide resources to homes and businesses in developed countries. Nearly all of our stick-built, brick and mortar homes in the US are connected to the grid that is made up of various systems or utilities. When you receive a utility bill you are on the grid. You're dependent on, and paying a fee to, a company that provides utility services to you.

There are utilities that everyone's familiar with such as water, electricity, or gas/ propane/ natural gas. Another utility handles waste – liquid and solid. Your toilet, shower and sink water waste are connected to a city sewer system. Trash collection that is separated into refuse, recycling and green waste.

These make up the major utilities that represent the grid. As you can imagine, as our society grows we become increasingly more reliant on the grid.

Another part of the grid is the World Wide Web, or Internet. It follows the same principles as the utility grid, but we’ll save this topic for another time.

Electricity travels through a complex grid of nearly a half a million miles of power lines. Hundreds of power plants generate electricity from oil, wind, solar, hydroelectric dams, and geothermal. It is all interconnected to provide the most reliable power possible.

When we say our home is “on the grid” we're reliant on all of these enormous companies to provide power and services so that our homes can operate. We all know what happens if the grid breaks down during a severe storm. We go dark. All business, communications, healthcare, and transportation would cease.

While some homes and businesses have temporary backup systems such as generators, when the electricity goes out, generators last so long because their fuel supply is limited. We rely on electricity for “essential appliances” such as air conditioners, heaters, lights, refrigerators, water, and waste services. The second your electrical source turns off all those systems become useless.

Even sewer and trash collection would cease to operate because gas stations wouldn’t be able to refuel trucks. We’d be in a world of hurt. Even our toilets wouldn't work because water service depends on electricity to pump it into your home. We are reliant on the grid.

The concept of going off-grid means disconnecting, and giving yourself freedom, from the grid. More and more people are disconnecting from the grid thanks to the growth of solar power.

Travelling off-grid is nothing new and it’s been with us for millennia where people fended for themselves. Living off-grid was how the “West was won.” It’s simple, pioneer mom, dad and kids were America’s first “off-grid family.”  All the needs to sustain life in the west was contained in their very own covered wagon.  Mind you, the “luxuries” were a bit lacking.  Of course, there were many risks and discomforts that came along with an off-grid lifestyle, too!

When we talk about off-grid, we don't mean going camping or being a hermit in the woods and living under a pile of sticks. Maintaining our high-quality standard of living, but without reliance on that grid, is what luxury off-grid living is all about.

When we are no longer reliant on external providers of utilities, basically life-giving resources, we increase our self-reliance. We're only reliant on ourselves and the situation we have created for ourselves. The concept of a luxury travel trailer going off-grid is a whole ‘nother bag of bananas, because now not only are we trying to cut the cord from these life-giving resources, but we're trying to do so in a way where we can pick up and move wherever we want in a very nomadic way.

The ability to live a mobile lifestyle is a beautiful virtue that only travel trailers, also known as campers, can allow. The ability to explore and get off-grid and be self-contained can be an epic, life-altering experience.

Travel trailers have been self-contained since the early 1900s, but there's a big difference between a self-sufficient and self-contained trailer. It’s basically the difference between taking all of your things you need to survive for a short period of time. Backpacking is effectively going off-grid in a “self-contained” manner. You’ve got your tiny camp stove, bottles of water, dehydrated food, and any sleeping affects that you’ll need with you – all on your back or pack animal. And you are self-contained for a week max.  Even signs at the entrance of trailheads clearly state “pack it in, pack it out”, meaning – whatever you bring in here you must take out with you.  That’s the virtue of being self contained.  Believe it or not, national parks even require you to pack out your poop when backpacking.   Not exactly luxury…

Similarly, a self-contained travel trailer will have things that allow you to get off-grid for a week, but that doesn't mean that you can go off-grid indefinitely. When your batteries run out, lights turn off.  Without regenerative power, off-grid is limited.  Now self-sufficient is a whole different animal.  Properly equipped and in the right environment, a self-sufficient travel trailer can remain off-grid for a very long time, potentially even unlimited.

The key to true off-grid is self-reliance and being self-sufficient, is in making that timeframe as long as possible. The question that needs to be answered is, “How long do you want to be off-grid?” Answering this question is the silver bullet. Travel trailers are designed to move, so you need to ask and answer, “Am I going to be moving from RV park to RV park?” where you plug into, and pay for, utilities or do you want more freedom than being limited to where “everyone else is going?”  Take it from me, RV parks are no dream.   Families are crammed into tiny spots, screaming children abound, and people-people-people, everywhere.  It’s more like Disneyland on a July weekend.

When we talk about luxury travel trailers , it’s important to define the concept of luxury as really having the best choices. It's no longer just having the most expensive things or the things that are in the most demand. True luxury these days is about the freedom to make decisions that are best for you. An off-grid living environment means you are no longer encumbered by having to travel from one space or another location with utilities, that it can resupply your self-contained situation.

Time is another important concept because living on the grid can be terribly time consuming to resupply. It takes time to find locations to restock and refill. Whether that's a literal gas tank, a propane tank, or your battery systems to recharge it takes time to resupply.

A high end travel trailer will first and foremost supply you with adequate power, both in stored battery power and continuous resupply through generous high efficiency roof-mounted solar panels along with redundant backup power supplies. It should allow you to run your AC and multiple high-power appliances at same time such as a microwave, hair dryer and residential fridge.  Let’s not stop there!  You’ll also want the ability to run your audio/video systems and provide on demand electronics charging.

A luxury travel trailer does NOT rely on a generator as a primary source of energy. Don’t get me wrong, generators certainly serve an important purpose, but they must understand they are the reliable bench players and not the first-string stars when it comes to your primary source of power. Generators should not be running fulltime and are oftentimes prohibited or greatly restricted to only 1 hr. of run time a day in some instances such as National Parks.  How limiting if that’s your primary off-grid power source!

This brings up another point about the various types of generators on the market. A quiet, integrated back-up power system with a remote start switch where you may activate the powerhouse while comfortably indoors is a luxury experience. A noisy, portable generator that you have to lift in and out of your truck and connect to your trailer every time you need a back-up power supply is not.  Simple.

There is an important distinction between off-road trailers and off-grid trailers, which means the freedom of utilities. When we think about off-road trailers, we often think about living out in the middle of nowhere on an extremely rugged dirt road which requires off-road gear and all terrain tires. When you’re out in the middle of nowhere you’re probably off-grid, but off-grid can also be located in the middle of a city.

One of the best installations of off-grid use can be to stay put in a luxury travel trailer on a piece of property that's located in town. You don't need connections to all the red tape bureaucracy, such as pulling sewer, water, or electrical permits. Off-grid gives you more flexibility. Off-grid does not necessarily mean off-road.  For example, in California, there are many counties that are allowing travel trailers as accessory dwelling units on residential properties. This is a great opportunity where without any utilities or site improvements you could quite literally take a luxury travel trailer and place it on the property and be ready to use starting day one!  No expensive permits, land use approvals, architectural review boards, or the costs associated with running utility lines to your ADU. If you really want to get off the beaten path and adventure to the great outdoors, you really need to consider purpose-built off-road camper trailers.

What do we humans need to survive? At its most basic level we need food and water, then shelter. In our modern day world, and perhaps most important beyond the “life-giving resources”, is power.  Whether it’s energy from electricity or gas to run the appliances you need for water and temperature controls.

Getting off grid is so much more than simply equipping your trailer with all terrain tires. When NASA goes deep into space looking for signs of life, they’re looking for one thing:  water because it is a major life-giving resource. Water that you can drink, bathe, or cook with. Then, what do we do with that wastewater after we use it? Is it going down the sink or toilet, or after taking a shower?

Finally, the next life-giving resource is food. I'm going to discount the concept of air as air is all around us, notwithstanding the quality of air. For the time being, planet earth has access to air.

The two primary forms of energy are electricity and gas, both provide power for cooling, heating, and outlets. The one constant with energy is it must be stored either in tanks or other electrical power systems, such as batteries.

Consequently, we’re faced with the issue of power depletion. When you use energy, you have to resupply that energy. When your gas tank runs out, you must refill it. Whether that's a battery pack or a tank of propane, you have to pull that out and remove all of that energy. The concept of resupply becomes very vital. How far can you take that energy is key.  And a key question then becomes, is there a way to pull energy out of natural resources WHILE your off grid, not having to travel to resupply.  This is the key to becoming self-sufficient, not just self-contained.

Solar panels are one way to capture energy from the sun. There are other redundant systems such as power generators, which use other fuel sources that you can carry with you to resupply energy. First and foremost, shelter is required to get off grid, then providing energy to all of the modern-day fixtures and appliances.

Whether it's drinking water (fresh water), or water for sinks or showers (greywater), or toilets (blackwater), you need water. In on or off-grid campers, water storage is measured by the size of onboard storage tanks. In an off-grid environment you’ll need a lot more storage. However, water efficiency and conservation to extend that off-grid capacity is key. More efficient water systems allow you to stay off-grid longer. A high end  travel trailer will have tanks large enough to sustain extended use. In my opinion, I don’t consider anything less than 75-100 gallons of freshwater a luxury experience. If you have appropriate fixtures that don’t waste a ton of water, a 100 gallon tank will give you about 200 mins of water to use at your discretion.  That’s about 50-60 water efficient showers!  Not bad.

How about eliminating some of these fixtures altogether? Waterless toilets are very effective. Composting toilets and incinerating toilets don't require the use of any water. Because they don't require water, they don't require holding tanks, either.

Whether you have a tiny wet bath or ultra-luxurious spa bathroom, a low-flow shower setting will use much less water and allows you to stay off-grid longer. While most of us won’t prefer the limitations of a wet bath design, there are fundamentals there are vital systems behind the scenes that make a bathroom function, no matter the size. A water heater that complements a low-flow shower also saves energy. A 9-gallon tank water heater, for example, is always on and utilizes more fuel. A better option is a tankless water heater that provides a low-flow rate only when needed and saves energy. These are the types of systems you will find in off-road camper trailers.

All of this wastewater eventually goes into storage tanks. Whether those are black water tanks or gray water tanks, you've got to do something with that water. So, you've got to pay attention to make sure that the tanks are appropriately sized for both black and gray water. Of course, if you can eliminate that black water tank in an off-grid environment, all the better, because the only thing that's being put into that black water tank is your toilet. If you can get a tankless toilet that doesn't require a black water tank, that's going to extend your off-grid use significantly.

All those things contribute to having a great off-grid environment for that increased freedom and ability to travel.

With the ongoing impact of COVID our world is changing at a rapid pace. People are exiting cities and rural land is being gobbled up. There is much greater demand on developed properties with utilities than raw land.  If you have a travel trailer that doesn’t require hookups and can adventure on any surface under those all terrain tires, you have a lot of options.

Most RV parks are overflowing and over-crowded, which is the opposite of social distancing. You could find yourself in a 10 campground with a thousand people, not a great experience.  I highly encourage you to go rent a traditional RV or travel trailer from one of the RV-sharing websites now-adays.  Take a “vacation” and stay at a few RV parks for a week.  After that experience, it’s easy to understand the benefit of off-grid.  I’m a big proponent of “learn by doing,” and this type of experience is worth its weight in gold!

Heating and cooling is an often gravely overlooked aspect of the luxury travel trailer experience. Off-grid living does not usually equate to sunny and 75. Off-grid living doesn’t mean an off-grid vacation during the few magical months when the temperature is ideal. Heating and cooling during hot, humid or cold and snowy months is what you should be prepared for. I see “perfect weather” days as a bonus, not the status quo. We don’t live in an ideal world, but we can control our environment by being capable and prepared.

My hallucination is to one day take your luxury travel trailer to a plot of raw land (without utilities) and be able to run your systems without any fuel supply or connection to the grid, forever.  Complete freedom to go wherever you want and be fiercely independent, no support systems needed. That’s my dream!  

Do your research. Understand what safety, enjoyment and peach of mind looks like to you. Are you going on a short- term trip or making a long-term investment? How well do travel trailers function to meet that end? These are the types of questions you need to ask when considering an off-grid RV or Travel Trailer.

Reverse light is standard and we use LED lighting throughout. Extended tongue and aluminum tongue box is included. Gas struts are used for the lid and lockable compression latches provide a weatherproof seal. The latches and tailgates are keyed alike. All hinges, vents and hardware are stainless steel.

Camper trailers have existed since the end of World War II. The recreation community has enjoyed traveling across the United States and the world with their camping trailers as an alternative to an RV, with the flexibility of visiting numerous parks and campgrounds.

Those travelers have recently ventured farther and farther away from the well-traveled roadways and interstates. The invention of the off-road camper has allowed them to more easily explore Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, the American West, the Australian Outback and more.

We examined sleeping capacity, length, width and dry weight as guidelines in your search for one of these travel trailers. We use a family of four (two adults, two kids) as our standard family for this exercise.

The Taxa Outdoors Mantis is one of our favorite camping trailers. This camping trailer features a Timbren axle-less off-road suspension that raises the Mantis’ ground clearance to 14-inches. The Mantis Overland also features a 20-gallon freshwater tank (and a 22-gallon gray water tank), wet bath, full galley kitchen and a Truma furnace/hot water system. 

Primary features include an extendable roof, a rear hatch for access and ventilation, LED exterior lighting, six acrylic and insulated windows with screens and shades, rear ladder steps to roof storage, and two storage towers with a trio of milk crate drawers. The interior cabin has enough space for a queen-sized 4.25-inch mattress. The cabin also includes RGB strip lighting with a touch controller. The sleeping space converts into a couch and table setup. There is a bunk option for small children and dogs, and the bunk can be used for extra storage space.

Airstream Basecamp 16X

The premier name in camping trailers has always been Airstream. The Basecamp X is Airstream’s entry into the more rugged camping trailer segment. The Basecamp 16X features Airstream’s classic riveted aluminum superstructure, a panoramic front window, a 3-inch lift kit, and two benches that convert into a bed. The complete bed measures 76-inches by 76-inches.

The Basecamp 16X features a rear access door, solar front window protection, stainless steel front stone guards, an increased departure angle, Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tires, a 21-gallon freshwater tank and a liquid petroleum low-pressure grill port.

Other features include an outdoor shower, multiple charging stations (both USB and 110V), an air conditioner, heat, and hot water. The Basecamp 16X is also pre-wired for solar power. In addition, an optional tent can be attached to the Basecamp to expand the living and storage space.

Opus Campers OP4

The Opus Camper OP4 is a variation on the camper trailer. The OP4 is a popup camper that utilizes air beam technology to create 8-feet of headroom. The ends of the tent fold out to create two double beds, and the U-shaped dinette can be converted into another double bed as well.

Interior options include a Dometic Coolcat AC & Heat Pump (10,000 BTU), a Dometic Propane Furnace (16,000 BTU), an Opus cinema system, rack-mounted hot water shower, and upgraded LED lighting with dimmer switches.

The off-road prowess of the Opus is from dual axle trailing arm suspension with dual coil shock absorbers, galvanized steel chassis and rock guard, electric brakes, 7-pin-plug, an E-brake, and an articulating hitch (DO35 or Lock'n'Roll).

The OP4 features an outdoor galley with a 12V ARB 63 QT fridge/freezer, four-burner stainless steel slide-out stove, stainless steel wind guards and chopping board, dish rack, LED exterior lights, and a sink with on-demand hot water.

Overkill Campers S.O.5.10

The Overkill Campers S.O.5.10 features a hard-sided camper trailer with a pop-top roof and a slide-out. This trailer is more compact and utilizes a 5-foot by 10-foot footprint. That’s where Overkill gets the model name from: S.O. stands for slide-out, and the 5.10 represents the trailer's dimensions.

With the slide-out open, this trailer can accommodate a queen-size 4-inch high resilience foam compact camper mattress and a 48-inch settee. The settee transforms into a toddler/dog bed. The pop-top option allows for more interior headspace as well. The interior also includes a multi-position table, a storage drawer under the bed, and numerous storage cabinets above the bed and at the rear galley.

The S.O.5.10 features a 32-gallon freshwater tank, a water pump and accumulator, and pre-installed water and propane hardlines. A Relion 200ah lithium battery powers the trailer, a Victron Multi Plus 13K inverter/charger, a Switch-Pros SP-9100 8-switch panel power system, and a 170-watt solar panel fixed on the roof. It also features a porch light, dimmable interior lighting, and dimmable LED lights in the rear hatch.

An exterior slide-out galley includes a four-burner stove, sink, and prep area.

Opus Campers OP15

The Opus Camper OP15 is more of an off-grid trailer that features a hybrid camping experience. The fiberglass-sided camping trailer features a soft-sided pop-top that extends the interior height to 6-feet-6-inches. In addition, there is a slide-out that provides space for a king bed. Also included are twin bunks.

The Off-Grid equipment includes three 100ah AGM batteries, a 300-watt solar panel setup, two freshwater tanks (63 total gallons), a 17-gallon grey water tank, a 10-gallon black water tank, utility storage with 6-gallon jerry can holders, and 20-pound gas bottle holders. The furnace is a 16,000 BTU with thermostat control. The optional air conditioning unit is a 13,500 BTU rooftop unit. Four 150-watt solar panels can be mounted to the roof. Interior lighting is LED in the bedroom and the lounge.

What to Look for When Buying an Off-Road Camping Trailer

What factors should you consider when buying an off-road trailer? We decided to consult the experts and spoke to Chris and Jen Hudak, the co-founders of Escapod , to give us their rundown of the basic factors buyers should look at.

Ground Clearance

The trailer must be able to surmount the obstacles you put in front of it. Not having enough ground clearance will be a limiting factor. “The first thing I’d look at in an off-road camper is the off-road trail conditions you want to achieve,” Chris says. “How high does the trailer have to be off the ground?”

Proper Off-Road Suspension

The second thing Chris and Jen would look at is the suspension. They state that a “broad spectrum” of suspensions would be classified as off-road. Not all of them are optimized for the weight of the trailer. They opted to build their own freeride suspension for the Topo2 .

“It’s an independent suspension with a coil over design,” Chris says. “And that was because what we realized is that if we can give you a more enjoyable towing experience you can go to further places and you can be less hard on the trailer itself”

Weight factors in two ways. The first is meeting the weight limit for the tow vehicle. “Can your tow vehicle tow it to where it needs to go,” Chris states. A lot of off-road vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler deliver ample capability but are limited on what they can tow vs. more specialized trucks.

The other is the amenities. You can have a super-light trailer, but the trade off is that it may not have all of the features you want. Striking that balance is going to be up to the customer. “That’s where you end up in that mobility versus firepower kind of battle,” Jen says. “What makes sense for the customer in terms of what experience they want?”

Length is a major consideration. It’s a factor on trail. More compact trailers are going to be more maneuverable. “Some of these longer trailers can’t do a u-turn on a trail or a forest service road,” Chris says. It’s also a factor when you come back from the trail. Chris and Jen wanted the TOPO2 to fit in a standard seven-foot garage, and it features a removable coupler to help achieve that.

Ease of Use

Setup time is a major factor, both when you’re arriving at a camp site and packing up to head home. A shell with a tent attached may be cheaper. A more utilitarian trailer will have a tent attached and a lot of moving parts. More premium options won’t require as much time and effort. A goal with the Topo2’s design was to minimize that effort.

“We started Escapod because we were time-strapped people that wanted to go out for a quick weekend getaway and we didn’t want to deal with all of the setup,” Jen states. “We wanted to attach something to our vehicle and have everything ready to go.”

In my years of exploring the great outdoors and challenging terrains, I’ve had the privilege of towing and testing a wide array of off-road camper trailers .

Each model brought its own unique set of features, designed to meet the demands of the most daring off-road enthusiasts.

For those on the hunt for the best off-road camper trailers , understanding the balance between durability, comfort, and versatility is key.

The goal is to reduce the amount of impact force that is transferred from the tires to the frame when you hit a pothole, drive over a rock, or need to power through a rough patch of the forest floor.

A lot of the best off-road camper trailers are relatively small. This makes them easier to take on rough terrain with a modest tow vehicle, but can also limit the amount of gear you can bring with you.

Another trade-off to debate is the fresh and wastewater tanks you want to prioritize.

Tankless water heater technology has advanced to the point where it is a truly viable way to get on-demand hot water in even a small camper.

This means you can opt away from an off-road camper with a hot water heater to save both weight and space. 

A Solar Power System

Here again, solar technology continues to advance to the point where the efficiency of photovoltaic cells can help top up an off-road camper’s house batteries.

This allows you to get further off the grid without having to worry about finding some sort of shore power connection or electric service to recharge your batteries. 

A Generator

If your power needs are more than what an RV solar system can provide, then you might want to prioritize an off-road camper trailer that comes with a generator included in the purchase or one that is at least wired too quickly connect to one. 

How Much Does An Off-Road Camper Trailer Cost?

You might be able to find an off-road camper trailer for as little as $8,000. Though some of the more well-appointed models can cost over $10,000 to as much as $18,000. It all depends on the features you prioritize.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Camper Trailer

The dry weight of the camper trailers listed in our guide ranges from 1,458 to 6,122 pounds. That weight typically excludes water, gas, batteries, or additional accessories like rooftop tents and racks. Pay attention to the dry weight of the camper so you can determine if the build is within the payload of your vehicle.

The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the maximum total weight the trailer can safely weigh. The GVWR includes the dry weight, also known as the curb weight, plus the weight of people, accessories, supplies, and all your outdoor gear.

The GVWR of these trailer picks ranges from 2,200 to 10,000 pounds. You’ll need the GVWR so that you can calculate how much equipment you can safely haul in the trailer on the road, as well as how many people can sleep inside.

Clearance & Tires

If you plan on driving through rugged terrain that would require 4WD, you should invest in a trailer with generous ground clearance and off-road tires , and consider an articulating hitch to prevent toppling over on uneven terrain. Sturdier tires can also provide better traction on slick roads with snow or rain.

The ground clearance of the off-road models on our list range from 1.5 to 1.9 feet on the Timberleaf Classic Teardrop Trailer , Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper , Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 , and Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Overland .

When we take a close look at tires, the TigerMoth Overland is outfitted with the 225/75R16 ( Cooper Tires Discoverer AT3 LT ), offering a tread guard against rocks and gravel, extreme durability, and solid grip on wet roads or trails.

By comparison, the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB has Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R15 Tires, which are great for towing stability and a high load capacity but are not ideal for rough terrain.

Sleep Space

At a minimum, our favorite compact travel trailers offer space for two people to sleep. A portion of these designs include cabins with a nonconvertible queen-size bed. Other trailer designs have options for a couch-to-bed conversion, like the TigerMoth Overland or Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 , or a structure that supports a rooftop tent.

The larger travel trailers on our list feature a range of comfortable overnight options. The designs range from daytime couches and fold-down Murphy beds to bunk beds to dinettes that transform into a bed. If you’re a taller or wider person, pay attention to the specific bed size.

For instance, the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS has a full queen-size mattress, whereas some trailers will have a narrower queen-size mattress. The Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS also has a bunk bed that can fold up, so more space is available for storage when the bed isn’t needed.

Also, not all mattresses are created equal. The pad in the TigerMoth Overland is firm with no cushion or give. However, the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 features a high-density memory foam mattress, and the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB has a pillow-top memory foam mattress.

A handful of the tidiest travel trailers have indoor space that’s solely dedicated to a queen-size bed and cubbies. Other tight trailers have beds that convert into a daytime couch or even have a table that can be easily installed. We like that even when the couch is pulled down into a bed in the TigerMoth Overland , there’s still a space to pull our shoes on and off.

Many trailers include an awning, which becomes a gem when you consider how much more space everyone will have to lounge out of the sun and rain at camp. Larger travel trailers typically have indoor sofas and dining tables that often convert into a bed.

Pricier, larger travel trailers have indoor kitchens with a range of features. Inside, you’ll often find a microwave, refrigerator, freezer, oven, sink, two- or three-burner stove, cabinets, countertop space, and dining table.

More compact, less expensive travel trailers have outdoor kitchens, and there’s a variety of unique designs. A galley organizes the kitchen area on the back of the rig, like on the Timberleaf Classic Off-Road Teardrop Trailer .

Other designs have pull-out drawers or fold-down units with the pantry, stove, sink, or countertop like the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 or the Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer .

The spacious travel trailers on our list have indoor bathrooms with a toilet and standup shower. Tinier travel trailers don’t have an indoor bathroom, but a handful have an outdoor shower head with warm water hookups like the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 and Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper .

If your camper trailer doesn’t have an indoor bathroom and you’re posted up in a remote place, be sure to research that location’s human waste and Leave No Trace requirements — whether that means digging a cathole or using a WAG bag.

Interior Storage

Interior storage space is great for organizing apparel, cosmetics, electronics, and other comforts. Inside, travel trailers often feature storage space like shelves and cubbies, but not all offer a latch system to hold items in place while driving around.

There can also be storage space beneath the mattress. The Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer had an aluminum interior frame, which extended onto the doors, with numerous holes to clip carabiners, hang dish towels, or slide in hangers to dry gear like our dense wetsuits .

Larger travel trailers usually have ample storage space, including cubbies beneath sofas, cabinets in the bathroom and kitchen, and even hanging closets.

Exterior Storage

Outside, tidy travel trailers can also have a toolbox, tongue box, or racks for storing gear and equipment. Large travel trailers also often have storage compartments facing outward, which sometimes include pass-through storage space.

Doors & Windows

We really appreciate it when the doors and windows are built to last in a travel trailer. One of the most unique door configurations is on the Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer . There’s a back door that swings open and a second door that opens upward like the gullwing doors on the DMC DeLorean in “Back to the Future.” Nearly the entire wall serves as a sturdy canopy.

Windows are great for allowing ample light and can help a space feel bigger, but shades are equally important for privacy and to block out the light of the full moon or campground lamp. Slide-down shades can black out the inside of the trailer, and bug screens can enable airflow regardless of bug activity. It’s also nice to have windows that can be locked when they’re cracked.

Electric, Solar, Gas, and Water

You’ll need to closely consider how much energy and resources you’ll need between trips to a gas station, store, or an overnight stay with shore power.

Even if you don’t plan to charge your laptop or watch television — an option in larger travel trailers — it’s nice to have battery power. The battery can run indoor and outdoor LED lights around the kitchen and doors, as well as the roof exhaust fan — and it can charge up phones. Many travel trailers feature a prewired solar inlet to get an energy boost off solar panels, too.

Each trailer will have a specific capacity for gas and water carry. For instance, the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 water tank boasts a 31-gallon capacity. The Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper has upgrade options for a 30-gallon water tank and bonus storage that holds two extra 5-gallon jerry cans. The Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer holds one 5-gallon jerry can.

In contrast, larger travel trailers have a greater water capacity, in great part to manage the bathroom. The Black Series HQ19 comes with a 50-gallon water tank for supply, a 26-gallon gray water tank for collection (for all used water except from the toilet), and a 26-gallon black water tank for all toilet waste.

Often trailers include an indoor smoke detector, fire extinguisher, and carbon monoxide detector.

How much weight can you tow?

Check your vehicle’s door jamb or owner’s manual for the payload, max towing, and tongue weight rating. Be sure not to exceed those caps with what’s hauled in the trailer and in the vehicle.

What camper trailer features allow off-road capability?

If you intend to off-road with your trailer, be sure to pick one with durable, all-terrain tires that can handle paved, gravel, dirt, and rocky surfaces. Look for a steel frame, ample clearance, axleless suspension, burly fenders, and articulating hitch.

How long do camper trailers last?

Most camper trailers will last between 10 and 15 years. However, numerous factors determine the lifespan of a camper trailer, and the most unpredictable is the human element. Outside elements that affect the lifespan of a camper trailer include the original design, build quality, usage, and storage when not traveling.

Assuming it is a quality-built trailer, is stored properly when not in service, and received regular maintenance, it’s normal to see camper trailers in use after 15 years from when it was bought brand new.

Overlanding, off-roading and boondocking in remote areas are skyrocketing in popularity. And I mean…what’s not to love?

Pretty sweet, right?! 

But try and take a normal camper trailer off-road and you’re gonna quickly wish you hadn’t. You need a travel trailer that’s a little more rugged, something that can take a few bumps and ruts and not complain. 

You need a mini off-road travel trailer. 

Don’t worry, I gotcha covered. Here are 11 of the coolest small off-road campers that can go pretty much anywhere your vehicle can.

These mini off road campers are kinda like John Wayne — they’re rough, they’re rugged and they’re ready to hit the trail.

Just keep in mind that these small off-road campers aren’t organized from best to worst or prettiest to ugliest. Think about your towing vehicle, where you’re gonna go with it, and your budget. Then choose the one that fits your needs and go have fun!

Let’s start with a small off-road teardrop!

Oregon Trailer Do Drop Alpha

What it’s a great mini off-road camper: Don’t let the candy-like “DoDrop” name fool you. This is definitely the Alpha of small teardrop campers. 

The base model is extremely capable and starts at less than $15,000. Get a deluxe version fully outfitted and you’re gonna have to put down more than $20,000. 

It’s similar to some of the other Do Drop trailers, but it’s been reinforced, beefed up and made more rugged in every way possible. I mean this little guy’s got long-travel suspension, 15” off-road wheels and tires, industrial powder coating, reinforced chassis, and jeep style fenders.

Plus there are tons of cool extras you can get:

• A roof rack so you’ve got a place for a roof top tent .
• 7-gallon Road Shower
• 55-inch awning
• Rocket stove
• Off-road shovel

Now let’s move on to the Cadillac of small off-road campers.

Campworks NS-1

Why this is an awesome mini off-road camper trailer:  Take one look at the NS-1 and you can easily see that it’s not your average small off-road trailer. 

It’s got a unique, seamless composite body. That means there are no seams, zero leaks, and long-lasting durability. The insulated wall panels also provide extra insulation for four-season camping. 

And while most small off-grid campers rely on propane stoves and water heaters, this baby’s all-electric. Yup…electric water heater, electric induction cooktop, and electric A/C unit! So how does it power all that?

There’s a built-in solar panel on the back of the camper and you’ve got the option to hook up extra solar panels. It’s got a 5,500-watt hour battery and space to add another!

Now let’s come back down to earth with a small off-roading camper that’s a little most realistic for most of us. 😋

TenTrax Ascend

Why this is a great off-road mini camper trailer: If you are an extreme off-roader who needs a small camper that can keep up, I 100% recommend you go with the TenTrax Ascend. Other small campers limit where you can go. The Ascend doesn’t. 

When it’s all folded up, the TenTrax Ascend is only a few feet long and has a dry weight of just 600 lbs, so yeah…it’s tiny! But that means it won’t weigh your tow vehicle down when drudging through deep mud or navigating rocky hill climbs. 

So how does the Ascend work?

When it’s all folded up, it’s a small trailer that’s barely bigger than its 38-inch all-terrain tires (optional). But the top has a built-in roof top tent that folds out when it’s time to hunker down for the night. 

Inside, it’s got storage for all your gear. Plus, it’s available with optional accessories like:

Now let’s get back to a more traditional teardrop style mini off-road camper.

TearDrops NW (All Off-Road Models)

Why these are great small off-road campers: Teardrops NW offers 4 different off-road models. All share similar features but are slightly different sizes. 

The smallest, the Scout, has a 5’ x 8’ footprint and a dry weight of 1,550 lbs. The largest, the Commander, is 5’ x 10’ with a 1,900-lb dry weight and a slightly more boxy shape.

Why the Pursuit is a great small off-road camper: It’s got a toilet and shower! What!? Yeah, you read that right. This little camper manages to pack a unique toilet/shower slideout into its small size. 

Keep in mind the BRS Offroad Pursuit is one of the largest campers on this list of small off-road campers, but by no means is it a huge camper. I mean…it’s just a hair over 13 feet long and weighs about 3,500 lbs. 

But despite its small size, this trailer packs a surprising amount of luxurious features. 

• Queen mattress

• 4-Burner Cooktop, Sink, and Microwave INSIDE the Camper

Timberleaf Pika Off-Road

Why the Pika is a great small off-road camper: Why mess with the classics? The Pika is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a simple and classic teardrop design that can follow you almost anywhere off-road. 

The Timberleaf Pika comes in three different trims:

• Standard – for regular road use.
• All-Road – With beefed-up suspension and bigger tires, this is good for rough back roads and mild dirt roads. Basically, it’s meant to be paired with a crossover SUV.
• Off-Road – With extra rugged features, the off-road version can be paired with pretty much any off-road or overland vehicle.

The Pika off-road has got some impressive off-roading features:

• 4” Lift 
• Electric Brakes
• Max-Coupler Articulating Hitch
• Rock Sliders
• Custom Fenders

Plus, it’s got all the standard Pika features. One of the cool features that I love is the skylight. Lay in bed and look up at the stars or close the shade to keep things dark for lazy mornings. 

The galley in the back is simple, yet functional. There are two different countertop levels so you’ve got plenty of space to work, even once you add a 2-burner stove. You’ve also got the option to choose from a slide-out for a Dometic cooler or a set of drawers and two cabinets.

Bean Trailers Mean Bean Off-Road

Why the Mean Bean is a nice small off-road trailer: Other than the cool name, the Mean Bean is a fantastic combination of luxurious features that make off-grid camping a little easier, while still being rugged enough for most 4×4 trails.

In my article 9 of the Coolest Off-Road Teardrop Camper Trailers I feature the Mean Bean’s larger brother, the Black Bean. But since we’re focusing on small off-road travel trailers, here we’ll talk about the Mean Bean. 

It’s got a dry weight of 1850 pounds so it won’t weigh your vehicle down, but is still packed with a lot of nice features. You can really tell that Bean Trailers really wants you to feel at home while using their trailers and not to feel like you’re just in a wooden box on wheels. 

You’ll love thoughtful features like:

• LED accent lighting
• Stainless steel sink and faucet
• Paper towel holder on the rear hatch
• Large front window makes the interior feel less cramped

Sylvansport Go

What makes it a great small off-road trailer: The Sylvansport Go definitely isn’t the most off-road-ready camper on this list. It is more rugged than your average camper and can go pretty much anywhere a crossover SUV can (like a Rav4 or Outback). 

However, what it lacks in extreme off-road ability, it makes up for in practicality. This thing is engineered to support all your outdoor adventures. 

It’s got a unique design that allows you to haul extra outdoor gear — anything from a small ATV to a couple of kayaks. 

There’s a gear deck where you can stash extra camping gear, pancake syrup, and bacon. Above that is a tent pod that’s kind of like a hybrid between a pop-up camper and a roof-top tent. Open it up and you’ve got sleeping space for up to four people. 

While you’re traveling, you can adjust the height of the folded-up tent pod so you can fit larger items on the gear deck — like an ATV or dirtbikes. 

Or you can use the equipment rack on top of the tent pod for carrying bikes, skis, or kayaks.

Taxa Tigermoth

Why the Tigermoth is a great small camper for off-roading: All of the Taxa campers are super unique, and once you learn about Taxa’s roots, it’s easy to see why. The founder and designer, Garret Finney, used to work for a NASA design center figuring out ways to make astronauts more comfortable in space. 

As you look at all of Taxa’s options, including the Tigermoth, you can definitely see that influence. The campers have funky looking designs that are extremely well thought out and practical. Everything has a purpose and is designed to stand up to the rigors of off-grid travel.

It’s got a dry weight of just 600 lbs, a tongue weight of just 89 lbs, and is only 111” from trailer tongue to the rear bumper.

Small Off-Grid Camper Features to Look For

Here are a few things to consider when looking for the perfect mini off-grid camper for your adventures.

How Far Off-Road are You Planning On Going?

“Off-road” means different things to different people. 

To some it means “off-pavement”. So maybe some relativel smooth dirt roads — basically anywhere a crossover SUV could go. 

To others it means hitting some proper off-roading trails (established dirt roads with a few technical sections). 

To others off-road means exactly what it says…off roads. That means they might be going where no vehicle has gone before and no matter what they encounter — rivers, rocks, ditches — they either have to go over or around it in their vehicles with camper in tow. 

A good rule of thumb is to get a small camper that matches your vehicle. 

• If you’ve got an unmodified crossover SUV (Rav4, Tucson, Outback, etc) then you could go with a small camper like the Sylvansport Go or the Mean Bean. Just double check the towing capacity on your vehicle first. 
• If you’ve got a normal unmodified truck or 4×4 SUV, you could opt for something a little more capable, like the Tigermoth or DoDrop Alpha.
• But if you’ve got a modified off-roader that can handle deep water crossings, steep hill climbs and some rock crawling, you’ll need something that can keep up like the Boony Stomper or the TenTrax Ascend.

Off-Road Capabilities

Look for these off-road features if you need a small camper that can handle proper off-road trails with technical sections.

• Rugged design: Heavy-duty frame and axle. All-terrain tires. Long-travel suspension. Rock sliders.
• Independent Suspension: Look for independent, axle-less suspension. This will help increase ground clearance and provide a smoother ride. 
• Articulating hitch: A normal ball and coupler hitch struggles on technical trail sections. That’s where an articulating hitch comes in handy. It has a larger range of motion so your vehicle and trailer can twist in different directions.  

How Long are You Planning On Staying Off-Grid

Are you planning on just 1-2 nights between access to water and electric? Or are you planning on staying off-grid for a couple of days or more? 

If you want the ability to easily stay away from water and electric hookups for days on end, look for these features:

• Solar Ready Hookups: Check the camper specifications and see if it is solar ready. That makes it way easier to hook up your own solar panels and extend your time off-grid. Fortunately all of the ones on this list have solar options. 
• Batteries: Most people with small campers can get by with one or two normal 12V or 6V deep cycle batteries to power things like LED lights, fans, small electronics, etc. Make sure your camper comes with them or has a space for you to add them and easily hook them up to the camper’s electrical system.
• Water Storage: Make sure there’s an onboard water tank and/or space for storing extra jerry cans with additional water. Figure at least 2 gallons per day per person (not counting any you might use for showering).

What Is the Cheapest Small Off-Road Camper?

The cheapest small off-road camper is a close tie between the TenTrax Ascend, the Sylvansport Go, and the Boony Stomper. All cost right around $10,000.

What Is the Smallest Off-Road Camper? 

The smallest off-road camping is a tie between the Sunnyside Boony Stomper and the TenTrax Ascend. Both have starting weights of around 600 lbs.

Ready to head off-road with your mini camper? Choose the right one and it’ll be ready to go anywhere you and your vehicle can. 

-Maybe you’ll spring for the luxurious Campworks NS-1. 

-Or if small and simple if for you, maybe you’ll stick with the Boony Stomper or the DoDrop Alpha.

-Of if you want the ultimate in cargo carrying capacity, you might choose the Sylvansport Go. 

Whichever you choose (or even if you just stick with a tent), just be sure to get outside and enjoy the outdoors!

This Affordable Off-Road Camper Trailer Can Be Anything You Want

C anadian off-road camper manufacturer Off Grid Trailers has a new addition to its trailer lineup called the Sprocket. It joins the company's Expedition 2.0, Pando 2.0 teardrop, and Switchback, and if you're persuadable based on names alone, the Sprocket is a winner. Off Grid Trailers defines sprocket (the noun, not the trailer itself) as "a small lightweight component that powers a larger powerful machine" and explains that "the Sprocket's modular design is the core component of your adventure basecamp that allows you to add options and accessories when you are ready."

That pretty much sums it up, but to further dive into the details, here's our best attempt at the gratuitous overuse of the word "sprocket. " Whereas many trailer lineups become more complex with each model introduced, that's not the case with Off Grid Trailers' Sprocket. Rather than reinventing the wheel, the Sprocket is built on the existing Expedition chassis and is essentially an Expedition "lite"—slightly shorter (156 inches long versus 166 inches) and modular (or, less outfitted from the get-go).

Whereas the base Expedition starts at $32,750, the Sprocket starts at $23,500, akin to the price of a Ford Maverick compact pickup , which, if properly equipped, could pull the Sprocket's max GVW of 3,500 pounds. That means you could theoretically be out the door with a brand new Maverick tow vehicle and a Sprocket for the same starting price as many off-road trailers.

The Sprocket's modularity—trimming the standard features down to the essentials but remaining prepped for all the bells and whistles—makes it affordable. This means owners can add-on and upgrade as they wish, as they can afford, and according to the products they already own.

For example, the Sprocket has integrated mounting points for frame-mounted accessories, and if you look closely at the white trailer (pictured above), there are pre-threaded exterior bolt holes for side-mounted accessories like the driver-side shower box and passenger-side drop-down dual burner stove and sink. This flexibility is great for DIYers and aftermarket enthusiasts. It's worth noting that one big upgrade that can't make post-purchase has to do with the front box (where the slide-out fridge goes). The Sprocket comes with a standard half-height front box, while the Sprocket X has a full-height front box with a luggage carrier.

However, don't confuse the Sprocket's less-outfitted, modular nature as meaning the camper trailer lacks standard features. It doesn't. It has standard Timbren 3500 HD axle-less suspension, black aluminum wheels on 265/70R17 BFGoodrich KO2 all-terrain tires, a custom lockable dust/watertight entry door with a sweep-out threshold and tinted/screened window, a dual USB outlet, interior LED lights, 1,000-watt inverter, 30-foot shore power cord, a four-speed MaxxFan Plus fan, and more.

The Sprocket is all-metal, too. There is no wood. There's a bunch of aluminum: removable two-piece fenders, subfloor, outside skin, painted white inside skin, and tube wall frame. There's a one-piece wrap-around roof, CNC-cut R10 rigid foam insulation, and lightweight polypropylene board. The base Sprocket provides a great foundation for longevity.

The Sprocket is a sleep-in off-road trailer. You lay in the 80-inch by 56.5-inch polycarbonate honeycomb sleeping area. There's an optional queen-size 4- or 6-inch high-density foam convertible mattress. Even a small cabin like that of the Sprocket provides shade and relief from the elements.

A unique feature of the Sprocket is its pass-through storage, connecting the cabin to the rear storage area via four cabinet doors that swing into the cabin. If you don't like the pass-through, just keep the doors secured. The rear storage area is accessed through a hatch that swings upward.

Thanks to it modularity, owners can add a bunch of off-grid overlanding products and accessories from Off Grid Trailers upon purchase or on their own timeframe: diamond plate fenders, running boards, an Ark XO front jack, rear stabilizing jacks, anti-skid black powder coating, roof racks, spare tire, Molle panels, drop-down interior shelving, Dometic or Truma fridge, road shower, RotoPax water containers, Bluetooth stereo with marine speakers, spice rack, paper towel holder, propane tank, dual batteries with 2,000-watt inverter, 180-watt portable solar panel, heat and air ports, 360 degree articulating hitch, upgraded suspension—and whatever else customers come up with on their own, like a rooftop tent. The upgraded OGT Evolution Series Suspension by Fabtech Motorsports, good for 8 inches of suspension travel, incorporates an independent trailing arm suspension with 2.25-inch Dirt Logic shocks.

The Sprocket by Off Grid Trailers can be pre-ordered now, with deliveries expected in July. There's no "wrong" build in overlanding, whether you opt for every off-grid provision possible or just rock the base Sprocket.

Wednesday and Thursdays nights are going to be the busy nights. The rest are going to be easier to pick a show to watch.

Looks like I’ll probably be adding NCIS: Origins, Brilliant Minds, and Matlock to my viewing schedule this Fall. And I’ll give Murder in a Small Town and High Potential at least an initial sampling.

This is so disheartening to me: in Fall 2024 I’ll be down to only 13 series a week (1 each on Sun, Mon, Tue, Fri; 4 Wed; 5 Thu.) Only four new shows made my list: Joan, NCIS: Origins, George & Mandy, and The Librarians. Too many shows I watched were canceled, and of the new shows, too many hour-long shows are procedurals and I’m over that – the schedule is oversaturated with them! Sadly most of the comedies don’t interest me either. Are we still in Peak TV?!!!

I only have 9 current scripted series on the Fall grid above that I follow!!

I only have 5 that I follow and 3 nights of watching. Everything else I. Like have been cancelled or moved to mid season

I was amazed that I could be adding five shows to my watchlist, from having only two on the five main networks (Ghosts and Night Court). That is the most I’ve had since the glorious days of the WB.

I added Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, Happy’s Place and potentials St. Denis Medical, Matlock and Murder in a Small Town.

The CW did a decent job with scheduling, especially on Mondays with counterprogramming and Superman & Lois on Weds as well as Sunday night movie to fill the slots.

Hopefully, they can get decent numbers too and pull through to see another season.

There’s some easy, smart moves in the scheduling here.

Superman & Lois is on Thursdays not Wed.and it’s definitely the final season for it, unless you meant else there.

Where are the comedies? Why is ABC pretty much all reality? Why is Thursday overcrowded with scripted programming? Why did CBS cancel So Help Me Todd and didn’t even bother to program Sundays @ 10pm? This is possibly the worst lineup of programming ever!

CBS didn’t program Sundays at 10 because there is always sports overruns that results in late start times for the primetime schedule.

Sundays – I like to DVR some of the movies but I’ve seen most already so most likely to watch CBS dramas and FOX animation, though the new toon might not make my list with how dumb it looks Mondays – Recue: HI-Surf looks fantastic! Wish a trailer for Brilliant Minds was out but will try that and Poppa’s House. Probably The Voice… may try game shows though usually only watch celeb versions Tuesdays – though the “helper of cops” thing is overdone, I love Kaitlin Olson so High Potential; will check out Murder in a Small Town and St. Denis Medical; Night Court; Irrational; maybe Accused and DWTS Wednesdays – my weakest non-weekend night. Sullivan’s Crossing, try Joan, DVR Abbott since I’m not watching any of that other crap. Still mad they are leaving Abbott as sole fall comedy. Maybe try the Summit. Thurs – Busiest night! Superman & Lois; may try to catch up on Librarians to check out new show; I never watched Young Sheldon because I didn’t want to watch him grow up to a be a misogystic jerk but I might check out the spin-off and Matlock as I do watch Ghosts and Elsbeth; probably all 3 NBC procedurals; will check out Dr. Odyssey Fri – Happy’s Place, Fire Country, maybe Lopez vs Lopez, and then SNL on Saturday MIDSEASON: Wil Trent, The Conners, & any new scripted on ABC plus Celebrity Wheel of Fortune; maybe Watson on CBS; most scripted stuff on FOX like Great North, Animal Control, Alert, try Going Dutch. On NBC, try The Hunting Party, The Americas, maybe the other reality since likely to be on my not-much-on Mondays. CW will try the two new scripted co-,productions and if they come back Wild Cards, Family Law, Sight Unseen, the comedies

Also is it just me or has the calendar been able to be clicked bigger and more printable in the past? Maybe I am just thinking of the monthly calendars TVLine has done. But if this one is meant to be similar, it’s not currently working correctly for me.

Scripted wise? Horrible. Shift everything to local programming, sports or reality. Let streaming be the home of scripted content.

Whole nights of nothing for me. It’s amazing to me how little broadcast I’m watching now. I used to have to make a spreadsheet to keep track.

CBS complained they had no room in their schedule for NCIS Hawaii… but they have room for an hour of reruns on Sunday nights… ???

Unless I’m just not seeing it, I see no reference to the Fox series Stars on Mars. It’s not listed under HELD FOR MID-SEASON, PREVIOUSLY CANCELLED or FATES TO BE DETERMINED. What other category is there?

Horrible TV schedule! I’ll miss the Wednesday comedies on ABC. Abbott is hilarious but on too late. Luckily there’s alot of downtime for me since most of my favorite shows won’t be til mid season

Please don’t cancel So help me Todd. Absolutely love this show. Great story lines. Very witty and well written. One of my favorite shows on CBS. Can not imagine why he would get rid of the show. But you have a bunch of NCIS. But you get rid of Todd. I wish you would please reconsider and keep the program. A die hard fan.

It’s nexstar’s desicion and I wouldn’t be suprised if nexstar cancelled all 3 because that is how cheap they are

It used to be I would only have a few time slots where I had nothing to watch, now I only have a few shows to watch. I am really disappointed in this upcoming season’s new offerings.

Very unfortunate that So Help Me Todd was cancelled. A refreshing alternative to all the ridiculous reality TV and cop shows with nothing but murder and mayhem and endless game shows. I can’t believe there is an audience for the fools participating in shows like Big Brother and even survivor with nothing but back stabbing and mean spirited. SHMT has excellent story lines and interesting family and coworker dynamics. Marcia Gay Harden excels at comedy as well as drama and Skyler Astin’s character is funny, clever and endearing. So sad CBS gave it the hook. Shame on stupid executive decisions.
