Bolpur also referred to as Shantiniketan is one of the most popular weekend trip destinations in West Bengal. In Bengali, Shantiniketan means house of peace and the majority of Bolpur is so calm that you will enjoy every bit of nature. Be it cultural programs, haat, Arts, or majestic Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan always feels homely.

How to Reach Shantiniketan

Bolpur is easily accessible by train and road from Kolkata. A faster and hassle-free option will be to board a train from either Howrah or Sealdah. However, you can also enjoy a long drive or take a bus to reach Bolpur (200 Kilometers) within four hours. Enroute you may taste famous Shaktigarh’s Langcha.

Food Options in Bolpur

Bolpur is certainly not famous for food. But if you love authentic Bengali cuisine there are a few places (little overpriced) you can visit like Ghore Baire, Panchabanjan, Sonajhuri, etc. Also, you will get the other cuisines like Mughal, Chinese very easily in restaurants like 9X9, Green Chilies, etc. Even typical budget Bengali meals are also available in roadside stalls or food hotels. Local Sightseeing in Shantiniketan Tour

Bolpur is mainly known for its natural beauty, Shri Rabindranath Tagore and Rangamati (Reddish Soil). During this Shantiniketan tour, you will enjoy the cool breeze, lots of greeneries more than the local sightseeing points.

Visva Bharati University

Unlike any other university, this institution only focuses on Arts, Literature, and Culture since its early days. On 22nd December 1901, this University was started with only 5 students in one of the grounds underneath trees. Gradually it became one of the most prestigious universities in India and get recognized internationally too. Still, students take their class in the open sky, under trees. Most of the visiting spots open at around 1 PM every day except Wednesday and Thursday.

Rabindra Bhawan Museum

Shri Rabindranath Tagore used to live in one of the buildings namely Rabindra Bhawan. Currently converted into a well-equipped gallery cum museum even his used car is on display. Shri Rabindranath Tagore’s writings including noble winning “Gitanjali” & its multilingual editions, arts, used materials, family details, and achievements are showcased here.

Rabindra Bhawan Museum Timings and Entry Fee

There is an entry ticket of Rs. 50 for general, Rs. 300 for foreigners and Rs. 10 for Students to enter the museum. This museum remains open from 10 AM to 6 PM (Wednesday and Thursday closed). Facilities like cloakroom, car parking, toilet, drinking water are available. Also, remember to keep this ticket until you enter Shantiniketan Griha.

Note: You are permitted to click pictures inside the museum but not selfies or any person. Using flash is strictly prohibited. In addition, please maintain silence inside.

Few more interesting places to see like Shantiniketan Griha, Chatimtala, Aurobinda Griha, Upasana Griha, and many more small but significant places. You should get yourself a guide for Rs. 100 – 200 to know the hidden facts and history about this place.

Kopai River ViewPoint

Although this place is getting narrower day by day, still it holds at least a satisfying beauty during sunset and cloudy days. 

Shanibarer Haat or Khoai Haat

This haat is one of the most attractive points of the Shantiniketan tour for fashion & handicraft lovers at Bolpur, Shantiniketan. You can get traditional Khes & Kantha Stitch sarees and Kurtis. Also, the marvelous handwork items like jewelry, poem frames, bags, etc. are available at the cheapest rates. You can do a little bargain too. If possible try to purchase stuff from this haat or Biswa Bangla Haat at Prantik to help the sellers rather than stores in Bolpur market area. This weekly (only Saturday) haat starts at around 3 PM till sunset.

Kankalitala Mandir

It is one of the 51 Shakti Peeth. As per mythology, the bone of goddess Sati dropped here. This temple is considered as a Hindu religious place. Every Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday many people gather for Puja.

You can also visit Deer Park (Ballabhpur Wildlife Sanctuary), Srijani Shilpagram, Prantik Biswa Bangla Haat, Bakreswar and Mama Bhagne Pahar.

Transportation in Bolpur

Bolpur has almost every kind of transportation like e-rickshaw (Toto), auto, rented car, and bus. I personally prefer e-rickshaw because of less fare and its eco-friendly operations. Nature alongside the road is worth watching from a relatively slow-moving vehicle. Although if you are in a rush and looking for a faster alternative, a rented car will be the perfect fit.

Suggested itineraries for Shantiniketan Tour

• 1st Day: Reach Bolpur by 9 to 10 AM. Rest for an hour then leave for Mama Bhagne Pahar and Bakreswar.
• 2nd Day: Local Sightseeing includes Srijani Shilpagram, Kankalitala, Kopai viewpoint, Prantik, Vishwa Bharati University, Deer Park and Shanibarer Haat.
• 3rd Day: Return Back.

Alternatively, if you have less time, you can return back on Day 2. Otherwise, extend your Shantiniketan tour to one day more. So, you can visit Massanjore, Tarapith, and Nalhatiswari Temple.

We had visited Santiniketan recently and had booked the Santiniketan Tourist Lodge online through wbtdc site. Our room was the AC Standard one. Once we reached there we were quite happy with the staff behaviour and was quite satisfied with the environment. The AC cottages are very nice. The rooms are quite big for 2 people. The room, bathroom, bedsheets, curtains, chairs, tables were totally neat and clean. We are typically particular about the hotel bathrooms, and was quite pleased here with the big and clean bathrooms. The food that was served was quite good, except felt it to be a bit pricey!! Breakfast was complimentary, for which we were given butter toast, omlet, luchi (bengali version) and aloo matar sabji which were quite tasty alongwith the tea. The best part was the location of the lodge. It was just 10 mins walking distance from the University campus which was really great. Overall we had a great and friendly stay. Hope everyone would enjoy their stay here :-) Happy Journey!!!

• Cleanliness

"If you wish you will do it" - this is proved by Govt. run Santiniketan tourist lodge. The rooms clean and comfortable but need to be maintain regularly. Staff also helpful. Surroundings is charming. Food quality also very good but little slow service (but if you order the food well in advance, they provide that on time). Overall satisfied.

• Sleep Quality

This is one of the good government run hotels I have been to. The location is excellent, particularly for those without a car/vehicle. Easily accessible from the rail station as well as the Vishwa-Bharti. The rooms were nice and comfortable. Overall surroundings and layout is charming. Service is quite ok for a government run place.

You don't expect much from State Govt. run hotels and lodges, but what a pleasant surprise awaited us when we booked the West Bengal Govt. run tourist lodge at Santiniketan. The online booking was a breeze. When we called up the reception a couple of days before we arrived, the person on the other side was extremely polite and arranged for a vehicle to pick us up at the railway station. Its a short drive from the railway station and close to the tourist attractions with easy availability of rickshaws and autos. The AC cottages we had booked were extremely clean, with all the basic facilities and hot water availability. The lodge had quite a bit of open space for morning/evening walks, play area for children and ample parking space for those driving down from Kolkata. Room service is also available although for dinner/lunch they prefer that you visit the restaurant in the adjoining administrative building. Snacks we ordered were excellent, as were the meals served during lunch/dinner. The breakfast quantity was quite adequate and well prepared. The lodge had arranged for the transportation facilities for sight-seeing etc and the service provided by the transport agency was again very good. Overall, there are really no negatives which are mention-worthy and full marks to WBTDC for maintaining such high standards

This is one of the few Govt. tourist lodges operated by the tourism dept. that can boast of their services in terms of quality! Convenient location,well maintained property, nice & homely AC & non-AC cottages and rooms, AC lounge & restaurant,ample free parking place, a little playing arena for kids etc. make it a all time favourite choice for staying in Shantiniketan.The online booking facility has made the booking procedure much easier although it is really difficult to get a booking in this lodge during the Pous Mela,Basanta Utsab & such other festivals.Now a little cautions... 1)Room service Don't expect to get any room service. Taking more than 10 minutes(and that's after 1 or 2 reminders) to deliver a jug of drinking water is quite natural!Besides, they insist on taking chilled water which may not be suitable for all. Getting a pot of normal water is a Herculian task . 2)House keeping dept. needs to be improved Bed sheets,pillow covers & bath linens were not changed during my 4 nights stay over there. 3)Limited scope for choice of food Whatever may be printed on the menu card, all you can expect to get are limited nos. of items for lunch & dinner. The complementary breakfast items are also fixed---puri-sabji & bread-omelette and for evening snacks they won't serve anything but pakoras!I must say that the food is tasty but it comes in huge quantity and a little costlier compared to other eateries in the neighbourhood.And last but not the least, please watch your food bill carefully as the restaurant staff often make mistake by placing wrong items on the bills.(I myself watched such an incident during lunch on the very first day to a boarder & to my utter surprise the same incident happened to myself during dinner on that very day when they brought bill for some chicken items instead of my actually ordered ruti-alu potol.After a few minutes, they finally acknowledged their mistake but it was a irritating experience for me).
