The wind blows strong though Xavier Rudd’s tenth album. It’s a recurring image that speaks of wide-open space and the awesome natural elements that shape it: a force far greater than us, but ours to harness if we take the time to learn, reflect and respect its ways.

“It hit me last year when I started to write Stoney Creek ,” the Australian roots journeyman says of the album’s first, exhilarating single: a rolling acoustic balm of a song that finds refuge in the simple blessings of rest, companionship and belonging in a world gone crazy.

“We were on a trip north to the Cape and the wind was blowing too hard to take the tinnie out to the island… As I contemplated everything in my life and what was happening in the world there was literally a strong southeaster blowing, all the time. It felt like a wind of change, literally, in so many ways.”

The wide-open space he’d found himself in — the great COVID silence — was both beyond his control and curiously in-sync. “I’d planned to take a year off anyway, the first time in 20 years I hadn’t done an overseas circuit,” he says. “I had a chance to reset and change a few things around, to reassess where I was at, musically and practically. I’ve been able to experiment with some new ideas and new sounds…”

The break accelerated a return to the solo mode of creation that first led the barefoot multi-instrumentalist on his phenomenal journey. From his birthplace on the blustery southeast coast of Australia to Europe, Japan, the US, Canada and South America, you can measure it today in audiences in their tens of thousands, and in hundreds of millions of song streams, not least his timeless, windswept keynote, Follow The Sun (2012).

Acoustic guitar in hand, engulfed by his progressively more complex and elaborate scaffold of didgeridoos and percussion, Xavier Rudd cut an utterly unique and compelling figure as the world warmed to his first indie albums of the early 2000s, Live In Canada , To Let and Solace .

“When I first got successful I was surprised, because I thought what I was doing was more like art,” he says. I was experimenting with didges and gaffa-taping them to chairs and I always had this real love for wood and the tones of wood, so it was all very earthy.”

Those instinctive beginnings eventually yielded the more crafted and purposeful likes of Spirit Bird , Nanna (with his nine-piece band the United Nations), Storm Boy and seven more live albums — though nobody could ever count those early bootlegs swapped by fans from Argentina to the Czech Republic, serving to double his audience on each return.

Today, Xavier’s relentless upward arc is among the most astounding success stories of our time. Countless more celebrated acts have come and gone like fireworks as his campfire steadily grows: a beacon to the kind of music fan that seeks sustenance in a fast-food world.

“I value the simple things in life,” he shrugs. “I value community, culture, our connection to the earth as human beings. I don’t care too much for the other stuff. I think the roots of who we are, and what our ancestral lines are and how those stories have shaped us are the most important things. And I guess I always celebrate those things in my music.”

As a child, at one with the sea and sand, inventing songs for his own enjoyment, Xavier set the tone for a life where creation was its own reward, and a gift not taken lightly. “I’ve always felt like I’ve had this old woman spirit with me that that is prevalent in my music, and I’m a vessel for that old woman to speak,” he explains, not for the first time as others try to understand his innate connection to his craft.

“I don’t need to understand who that is or what that is, I just need to be a clean, strong vessel for that to come through, and be humble about it; to realise it’s something that resonates within me and I just need to hold space for it, not let my ego get in the way.”

The spiritual conviction was there long before Xavier discovered the unsettled legacy of his paternal great grandmother, who would disappear from public records after being taken from her Wiradjuri homelands to Melbourne. “There’s stuff we’ll never know,” he says. But awareness of his ancestry, in all its myriad threads, clearly informs not just the earthy tools but the profoundly inclusive message of his music.

“The thing is, in Australia, a lot of us come from tough stories, no matter where we’re from,” he says. “The convict stuff is easy to find because it was documented but Indigenous history isn’t. But I feel sorry for everyone in this country. No matter what our bloodline is, everyone’s been denied culture.”

“I feel like with this record, I’ve been able to be really creative and I’m excited about what I’m making just because I’ve had time,” Xavier says. “I’ve had the chance to do it all myself, which I haven’t done since Spirit Bird in terms of instrumentation and stuff, so I’ve been getting a bit trippy with an analog synthesizer…”

There’s the sound of nature in its purest form, too, in the birdsong that continues to weave its spell through Stoney Creek and elsewhere. “I use birds a lot,” he says. “Often they won’t sound like birds. I use a lot of natural sounds, from everywhere. It’s sometimes hard to determine what they are, but the record is full of them.

“I’ve been here long enough to realise that for some people, what I’m saying in my music really resonates,” he says. “You know, all of our ancestors around the planet have come from some form of struggle and we carry that, all of us, years on. We’ve all got stuff to heal. And I think music is the greatest medicine on the planet.”

I first saw Xavier in Melbourne about ten years ago , l attend every concert he has in Melbourne , he brings tears to my eyes and my heart fills with love listening to his music l listen to him everyday , if the governments of the world could only really listen to his words the world perhaps could find peace , what an amazing soul , l sat at the Thornbury theatre listening to his music speaking to his parents who sat next to me the love for their amazing son was beautiful only wish there were more people in the world like him , hopefully one day his true words will help the beautiful Aboriginal people of this land , Thank you Xavier you are a wonderful soul

A bit disappointing really. Xavier called the town we were in "Norah Point" when it's known as "Norah Head".

The concert was a bit too business-like and transactional without theme.

He was incredible, he played reggae, surf rock, and he rocked, the place rocked, what a night, the venue was layed back friendly helpful. If I ever get another chance to see him I will.

Australian musician and activist Xavier Rudd has, from the very beginning, combined his love of the environment, humanity, and surfing with a healthy obsession with roots music. Rudd is a multi-instrumentalist and most of the time, a one-man band who plays surrounded by instruments in a complicated array: Typically, he has three didgeridoos placed in front of him on a stand, a guitar on his lap, a stomp box by his habitually bare feet, and an assortment of drums, banjos, harmonicas, bells, and bass guitar near at hand, or near at foot, as the case may be. He takes this setup with him on frequent tours (as well as his surfboards), relying on word of mouth rather than record labels to speak for him. His albums, several of ttve recordings, are most often for sale at these sold-out gigs.

Xavier Rudd Is Undertaking One of the Largest Tours of Any Aussie Artist in 2022

Xavier Rudd has spent more than two decades as one of the country’s most beloved and most revered artists, but as he continues to add more dates to his current global tour, it’s clear he’s in the midst of one the largest tours of any Aussie artist this year.

It was only back in March that Rudd unleashed his tenth studio album,  Jan Juc Moon . His seventh consecutive album to place in the ARIA top ten, the record showcases the arresting quality of Rudd’s passion and musicianship, intertwining in a way that can only be described as magical.

“Weaving together organic sounds of nature and wildlife, themes of environmentalism and Indigenous history—and powerful compositions that sees him working with the likes of J-MILLA or the Slabb Brothers— Jan Juc Moon is one of Xavier Rudd ‘s most resonant albums to date,” wrote Rolling Stone  of the record back upon its release.

With the record out in the world now, the next logical step for Xavier Rudd was to hit the road to share with his adoring fans the breathtaking songs that make up his latest album. But, it’s not enough for Rudd to simply take his new work on the road with a run of headline dates in major cities (including Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, and Hobart, of course ), rather, he’s an artist who doesn’t do things by half measures, having announced a truly immense national tour.

Kicking off his run of dates back in late May, the extensive national trek sees Xavier Rudd making an absolutely mammoth 86 stops, visiting every state and territory in Australia across 38 dates as he traverses the expansive natural landscape that inspires his work. After wrapping up locally, Rudd will head overseas for his international tour taking in 18 countries across 48 dates with shows already sold out in the likes of Antwerp, Amsterdam and Belgium.

Joining him on his tour is First Nations duo Marlon x Rulla , whose acclaimed performance at the 2021 edition of WOMADelaide saw  Rolling Stone   note that, “the group not only cemented themselves as one of the most monumental names on the bill for the evening, but set themselves aside as a pair of artists that you not only should, but undoubtedly need, to pay attention to as their career continues to rise.”

Having already powered through a run of Queensland shows, Rudd is currently in the midst of his trek through New South Wales, with this week seeing him visit the likes of Sydney and Newcastle before dipping down to the nation’s capital for a show at the Canberra Theatre.

What’s most impressive though is the fact that Rudd’s 86-date run of shows makes this current Jan Juc Moon album tour one of the largest tours undertaken by an Australian artist in 2022, only being eclipsed by a handful of the country’s best, such as Amy Shark and her mammoth 114 show touring schedule . It underlines Rudd’s status as an iconic artist and performer.

His current tour is set to continue for another month-and-a-half as Rudd visit’s the entire left side of the country, so if you’re yet to take the chance to catch one of Australia’s most beloved and revered performers live, now is the chance, with tickets on sale via his official website .

Xavier Rudd announces his 2022 Australian tour, in celebration of the release of his forthcoming 10th studio album ‘Jan Juc Moon’, out 25th March.

The wind blows strong though Xavier Rudd’s tenth album. It’s a recurring image that speaks of wide-open space and the awesome natural elements that shape it: a force far greater than us, but ours to harness if we take the time to learn, reflect and respect its ways.

“It hit me last year when I started to write Stoney Creek,” the Australian roots journeyman says of the album’s first, exhilarating single: a rolling acoustic balm of a song that finds refuge in the simple blessings of rest, companionship and belonging in a world gone crazy.

“We were on a trip north to the Cape and the wind was blowing too hard to take the tinnie out to the island… As I contemplated everything in my life and what was happening in the world there was literally a strong southeaster blowing, all the time. It felt like a wind of change, literally, in so many ways.”

The wide-open space he’d found himself in — the great COVID silence — was both beyond his control and curiously in-sync. The break accelerated a return to the solo mode of creation that first led the barefoot multi-instrumentalist on his phenomenal journey.

“Very excited to get out on the road and share this new record and live show that I’ve been working on. Australia first and then back out in the big wide world, the world needs music and I’m ready to share.”
