Here, masses of water from Lake Erie plunge over an almost 200-foot drop to flow into Lake Ontario. Downstream, the river rushes through a tight passage in Niagara Gorge and then churns in a giant whirlpool.

Niagara Falls is one of the top attractions in the United States and one of the most impressive natural attractions in the world. It's also one of the most accessible waterfalls with many ways to see and experience it. The most popular ways include walking along the rim trail, stepping out onto the deck of the Observation Tower , getting close up at the Cave of the Winds , or taking a boat tour on the Maid of the Mist .

Niagara Falls State Park is New York's oldest state park, opened in 1885, and home to a trio of impressive waterfalls and five islands on the Niagara River . Overall, the park covers 400 acres that include nature and bike trails, picnic facilities, and scenic photo ops.

The area is large, with much to explore and plenty of walking as you make your way to all three sets of falls, which are connected by a paved path. If your legs need a break, the park's vintage-style trolley brings visitors to the park's main attractions. There are also places to eat within the park if you work up an appetite.

Niagara Falls comprises three separate falls: the largest and most spectacular section is Horseshoe Falls , the smallest is Bridal Veil Falls, and the American Falls is at the north end. Nighttime is a magical time at Niagara Falls. The falls are lit at night in different colors, and there are fireworks presentations throughout the year.

Orientation and Highlights: The park's visitor center is a good place to start but there are also maps of the area posted around the park showing the attractions and pathways. The key highlights to see as you walk through the park are the view of Horseshoe Falls from Terrapin Point on Goat Island; the view of Bridal Veil Falls and the American Falls from Luna Island; and the view of the American Falls from Prospect Point. Prospect Point is also where the Observation Tower is, but you can get good views even without going to the tower.

Parking: The park is free to enter but there is a charge for parking (reduced cost Monday to Thursday). Choose your parking carefully. Lot 1 is right at the American Falls and Prospect Point, Lot 2 is on Goat Island and is closest to Terrapin Point and the Horseshoe Falls. Lot 3 is also on Goat Island but quite a distance from all the view points and the least desirable. Outside of the park, there is a multi-level municipal parking garage, private lots, or you may be able to find hourly street parking.

Tour: An excellent way to see the highlights of the falls while enjoying door-to door service is the Niagara Falls American Side Highlights Tour . This five-hour guided tour includes admission to Niagara Falls State Park, the Maid of the Mist tour, as well as tours of the Cave of the Winds, the Niagara Falls Observation Tower, and Goat Island.

The Prospect Point Observation Tower is a great way to admire the full grandeur of the falls from Niagara Falls, NY. Although it is set a short distance away from the edge of the falls, it is close enough to the falls to occasionally enjoy a refreshing spray. The tower is accessed via a broad observation deck that extends beyond the tower and over the water. From here, you can get a clear view of all three falls, including American Falls, as well as the mesmerizing rapids.

The boarding area for the Maid of the Mist tours is located at the base of the tower, accessed by a high-speed elevator from the observation deck. The base of the tower also provides access to the Crow's Nest, a smaller observation area located much closer to the falls. The Crow's Nest is accessed via a trail and a set of stairs. This short hike is also located within an Audubon Important Bird Area, which is home to several varieties of gulls, as well as peregrine falcons and bald eagles.

You do not need to go on a Maid of the Mist tour to go to the lower level, but there is a small fee for the deck and elevator.

The tower is located on the site of the former High Bank Industrial Mill, now considered part of the Historic Mill District that was active between 1861 and 1918. Like many riverside towns, the quick rise in manufacturing also led to a hasty increase in pollution. The New York State Reservation Park was established in 1885 in an attempt to preserve some of the area's natural beauty, but the hydroelectric and industrial businesses continued to grow until the early 20 th century, when pollution became too bad to ignore. By the 1940s, most of the mills had been removed.

Prepare to experience the best view of Horseshoe Falls, and to get soaking wet in the process! The Maid of the Mist is the longest-running boat tour of the falls, in operation since 1846. It is also one of the most popular attractions at Niagara Falls State Park during the summer season.

You embark from the base of the Observation Tower , donning a blue poncho, and set out on the river up to the base of the falls on a double-decker boat.

The 30-minute tour visits both American Falls and Horseshoe Falls , riding up close to the roaring wall of water where hundreds of thousands of gallons crash down each second. This unforgettable tour operates in season from April through November, and tickets can be purchased online in advance or once you arrive at the park.

Cave of the Winds is a great way to get up close to the base of the falls (American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls) without getting on a boat. From this series of decks and stairs, you will get soaked from the spray and be able to look right up at Bridal Veil Falls pouring down above you and hear the roaring crash of water hitting the rocks. It is a total sensory experience.

Cave of the Winds is on Goat Island. You'll need to walk out onto Goat Island and buy your tickets at the Cave of the Winds Plaza. This is a timed admission ticket, so do this first, and if you have to wait around, you can explore the other sights in this area. An elevator will take you down to the base for this experience.

Prior to descending the 175-feet into the gorge, you will be given a ponchos and souvenir sandals - a must for anyone who doesn't want to spend the rest of the day in soggy shoes. Named the "hurricane deck" for its constant state of stormy conditions, the wooden platform stands only 20 feet from the tumbling water of Bridal Veil Falls .

You can also access Luna Island by gangway from the northern tip of Goat Island, and a network of walkways provide additional chances to see both American Falls and Horseshoe Falls from a different perspective.

Three miles below the American Falls, the river changes course again, forming a whirlpool in the great cauldron originally created by tectonic movements, then turning northeast over the Lower Rapids towards Lake Ontario . These rapids are some of the world's most dangerous, with 100,000 cubic feet of water moving through the narrow Whirlpool Gorge each second.

From the New York side of the river, visitors can hike down a series of paths and stairs to an observation point that was once a stop on the Great Gorge Railway. A more navigable way to view the whirlpool and rapids is the Whitewater Walk , which is wheelchair accessible, but does require a visit to Canada's Niagara Park in Ontario.

Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is also a popular way to view the falls from above, spanning the Niagara River between the United States and Canada.

The Rim Trail offers a range of stunning views, running north-south along the top edge of the gorge, from Devil's Hole State Park, through Whirlpool State Park and Niagara Falls State Park, ending on Goat Island. The trail is 5.4 miles long one-way .

It is designated as "easy," offering a well-tended trail that is paved in the most heavily trafficked sections. It does include several sets of rather steep steps.

At the northernmost end of the trail, hikers can continue on Artpark Gorge Trail for another 1.3 miles (easy to moderate difficulty) to reach the Artpark State Park , which is just north of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge .

River's Edge Trail is also located in this park, and as its name promises, it offers hikers the opportunity to see the river on its own level. This easy trail is only 1.2 miles and is an excellent choice for those who might have difficulty on the other most challenging waterside trails.

Alternatively, hikers can double back and then diverge onto either the Robert Moses Recreation Trail (easy level), which traverses Deveaux Wood State Park , or the more challenging Devil's Hole Trail . The Robert Moses trail is fully paved and allows cycling, skating, and cross-country skiing in winter. It is 3.2 miles long and extends from its junction with the Rim Trail back to the Niagara Gorge Trailhead. The park offers guided tours from May through October, weather permitting.

Visitors who are looking for shorter paths that depart from the Trailhead Center have other options that explore the Niagara River Gorge. The Great Gorge Railway Trail (easy) is about 1.1 miles one-way , ending in a staircase that leads up to the Rim Trail; hikers can forego the stairs and double back for a hike that's approximately two miles total. This trail descends from the trailhead gradually and offers great views near river level, as well as scenic views from overlooks.

The American Falls Gorge Trail (moderate) can only be accessed via the Railway Trail, extending along the water upstream to the Rainbow Bridge . It is about a one-mile round trip and offers great views of the Schoellkopf Power Station.

Devil's Hole State Park is named for its position along the Devil's Hole Rapids , which are located downstream from the Whirlpool and Whirlpool State Park . The Devil's Hole Trail is rated moderate; however, it includes a great deal of stairs and some rock fall risk since it leads down the embankment and along the gorge near the edge of the water.

This 1.25-mile trail is accessed via the Niagara Gorge Trail (Rim Trail) , either directly at its northern end or via the Whirlpool Rapids Trail to the south. Its proximity to the water at Devil's Hole Rapids makes it an excellent spot to appreciate the sheer magnitude and power of the water.

The Whirlpool Rapids Trail is the most difficult of the system's trails, including a steep staircase, a few areas with narrow passages, and some boulder hopping. It totals 1.3 miles one-way but does not connect with any other trails at its southernmost end. Those on the Devil's Hole Trail can continue on this path upstream to enjoy the views of the Whirlpool and Whirlpool Rapids and then double back to return to the Rim Trail via the Rapids Trail staircase.

The Aquarium of Niagara is a fun diversion for families and a great option for chilly or rainy days. Here, you will find more than 200 species of aquatic animals, as well as 30 educational exhibits. Aquarium presentations include a sea lion show, harbor seal presentations, and penguin feeding.

Visitors can also choose to have an animal encounter with a behind-the-scenes look at the care, training, and social lives of seals and Humboldt penguins. The aquarium also serves as an animal rescue center for injured wildlife.

The Castellani Art Museum was founded by the Castellani family in 1976 to further the study and appreciation of art at Niagara University and the region. The permanent collection includes more than 5,600 works in a wide range of media that date from the 1850s to the present.

Examples include paintings, drawings, photos, and sculptures, as well as pre-Columbian ceramics. The bulk of the museum's collection is focused on artwork created since the 1970s and features prominent and emerging contemporary artists. The museum is located on the Niagara University campus.

Old Fort Niagara offers visitors the opportunity to explore one of the most important forts of the 18th century, crucial in maintaining control of access to the Great Lakes during the colonial wars. The visitor center and the fort's many restored original buildings include exhibits and artifacts. During the summer, there are living history interpreters who demonstrate what daily life was like, from routine chores to working artisans.

Guided tours are also available in-season, and during the off-season, visitors are encouraged to enjoy an orientation video and self-guided exploration of the grounds. The fort also hosts special events, including re-enactments, and there are hourly musket demonstrations year-round.

One of the best things about Niagara Falls is its proximity to Niagara Falls, Canada . This is a completely different experience than the American side, both in terms of view of atmosphere. Unlike the American side, set in a park, the falls sit right in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, and this is a city designed for family fun.

Here, you will find a variety of tourist attractions, including some unique ways to enjoy the natural wonders of the river and falls. One of the key attractions is the Journey Behind the Falls , which allows you to take a peek at the underside of Horseshoe Falls from portals carved into the rock beneath, accessed by tunnels that were carved more than 130 years ago. Another popular thing to do is get a thrilling view of the whirlpool on the vintage 1916 aerial cable car called the Aero Car .

When you have had enough of waterfalls, walk up Clifton Hill to enjoy an amusement area with rides, games, and a carnival-themed environment. Grab some cotton candy and enjoy a plethora of entertainment options, from midway games to bowling, arcades, and coaster-track go-karts. It is also home to the Niagara Skywheel , Canada's biggest observation wheel, which offers stunning views of the falls and Niagara Gorge.

Located off Goat Island upstream of Horseshoe Falls , this group actually consists of four small islands. The three largest were named after the daughter of General Parkhurst Whitney (Asenath, Angeline, and Celinda Eliza), and the fourth is referred to as Little Brother Island or Solon.

The three larger islands can be accessed via footbridges from Goat Island; the path to the bridge is located near the Terrapin Point Viewing Area . Like a peaceful oasis, the islands feature picturesque stone walkways and cheerful foliage while giving visitors a unique perspective of the Upper Falls area.

During its industrial heyday, Niagara Falls was home to numerous hydroelectric power stations. Construction on the Schoellkopf Power Station began in 1905 and continued through 1924, at which point it was the largest of its kind in the world. It gained infamy on June 7, 1956, when a small seepage detected in the morning gave way to a collapse by the end of the day, destroying two-thirds of the plant in a massive rush. The station was not rebuilt, and today the site is a testament to the impressive and enduring power of water.

The entire history is explained in pictures and text on a giant placard on a ruined wall. The Schoellkopf Power Station ruins are free to enter, just take the elevator to the river level.

The ruins can best be viewed from the American Falls Gorge Trail, accessed via the Rim Trail and Great Gorge Railway Trail .

After a day of sightseeing or when the weather isn't cooperative, a visit to the Fashion Outlets is a great diversion. Located near the airport and just over the river from Canada via North Grand Island Bridge , it's a convenient place for both shopping and dining.

Unlike many other outlet complexes, this one features an indoor setting that allows shoppers to move from store to store without having to brave the elements. In addition to offering many well-known clothing brands, shoppers will find outlet shops for big-brand accessories, shoes, and personal care, as well as nail and hair salons.

Dining options include full-service restaurants, as well as quick-bite kiosks and specialty shops.

Most outdoor tours, including the Maid Of the Mist boat tour and the Cave of the Winds, operate from the beginning of May through the end of October, with the winter and early spring months usually proving to be too cold to enjoy some of the attractions.

There are three bridges crossing the Niagara River into Canada near the falls, two of which have pedestrian lanes. The most important thing to keep in mind is that the border crossing here is just as stringent as any other, so be sure to have valid passports at the ready. Those traveling with children should be sure to have a valid ID and all appropriate paperwork showing permission if needed.

Spanning 400 acres and located at the brink of the Falls, this state park is the oldest in the US. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, of Central Park fame, and features trails, gardens, and a range of attractions.  This is your chance to get close to the falls. A ticket to “Cave of the Winds” lets you descend into the gorge and stand within feet of the raging waters. Don’t miss the daily summer  fireworks , either.

2.  Maid of the Mist

While technically located in Niagara Falls State Park, Maid of the Mist deserves its own spot on the list. The 20-minute double-decker boat tour takes plastic-poncho-sporting passengers right up to the base of the Horseshoe Falls, which spans an incredible 2,200 feet in width.  Maid of the Mist has been a Niagara Falls favorite for generations. The ride provides passengers with a new perspective on the Falls and an appreciation for just how powerful they really are.

3.  Old Fort Niagara

Just 20 minutes from Niagara Falls, Old Fort Niagara lies at the base of the Niagara River. The first military post was established at the fort in 1679, but now this place is best known for its role in the War of 1812.  Whether you’re a history buff or looking for a kid-friendly excursion, Fort Niagara is a great day trip idea. Go ahead and climb onto the rocks at the river bank but watch your balance: the whirlpools are powerful and can easily suck you under.

Once the largest hydroelectric power station in the world, this is a reminder of humanity’s desire to harness the incredible power of nature. While not entirely abandoned, the Schoellkopf Power Station gives off ghostly vibes at every turn. Constructed in three sections between 1905 and 1924, the station suffered a catastrophic collapse in 1956. All that remains of the original site is a stone wall, although occasionally whispers of the past make themselves known.

The jet boat tour begins in Lewiston and takes you right into Niagara’s Devil Hole Rapids. Starting at the Trailhead Center, several routes snake around the falls and offer something for everyone, from sweaty climbs to peaceful ambles. The entire area is magnificently rich in flora and fauna, not to mention history, and the best way to embrace it all is to don those walking shoes and hit the trail of your choosing.

11.  Cave of the Winds

If you want to understand how intensely powerful the falls are, get on the Cave of the Winds tour, a famous tour taking intrepid visitors as close to the falls as is possible within the realms of safety. Dress wisely. Originally named Aeolus’s Cave (after the Greek God of wind), the Cave of the Winds tour involves an elevator ride into the abyss (not the actual abyss) before crossing a walkway that leads to the so-called Hurricane Deck. No, the name is not a coincidence. The tour is weather-dependent, of course, but an absolute must.

12.  Rainbow Air Helicopter Tour

Ascend above Niagara Falls in a helicopter and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the surrounding scenery. The flights take off from right beside the Rainbow Bridge, which crosses into Canada and lets you off just outside Niagara Falls State Park.  This tour includes an aerial view of the Falls but also gives passengers without a Canadian visa a glimpse of life across the border. You can also plump for an extended tour, barrelling down the Niagara River.

13.  Three Sisters Islands

These three islands are named after the daughters of General Pankhurst Whitney, one of the early settlers of these parts. Visiting the American side of Niagara Falls is the best option if you’re looking to not only enjoy these stunning falls but also spend some time outdoors. The American Niagara Falls are less crowded than the Canada Niagara Falls , which claims to have the best views of the Horseshoe Falls. Still, there are plenty of fun things to do in Niagara Falls NY, so I’m sure you won’t be disappointed if you choose this side of the falls.

Besides, there is no doubt that it’s one of the most popular things to do in New York state. The falls are along the north side of the Niagara River, at the  Niagara Falls State Park , the most important place to visit in Niagara Falls, NY, and the oldest state park in the USA.

We visited it in July and booked this half-day tour that included the core Niagara Falls New York attractions like the Cave of the Winds and the Maid of the Mist . After that, we moved to the Canadian side, where we spent the night and watched the fireworks. If you can also visit both sides, check out our ultimate guide to visiting Niagara Falls .

In this article, which focuses only on the American side, I will share the top 20 Niagara Falls, NY attractions  with you!

1. Terrapin Point at Goat Island, the best place to see the Horseshoe Falls from the US side

No one lives on  Goat Island , but it’s a popular place with tourists for a good reason. It’s where you’ll find  Terrapin Point , one of the  best places to see Niagara Falls’ USA side , particularly Horseshoe Falls.

Terrapin Point is the top viewpoint from Goat Island and is at the western end of the Island. It’s an awesome  place to see in Niagara Falls, USA  because you get such a unique view. As you stand against the railing, you can look down at the Horseshoe Falls cascading below. You can also look out over the Niagara Gorge and see the remainder of the falls in the distance.

From 1833 to 1873, the Terrapin Tower lighthouse stood at this lookout point, but it was blown up after people complained that it disrupted views of the falls.

Goat Island is in the Niagara River and is easily accessible via two bridges. The entire area is full of forests and woods, as well as a network of walking paths. You can also find parking lots here.

2. Cave of the Winds, one of the top-rated Niagara Falls attractions in NY

The  Cave of the Winds  is a prime  attraction at Niagara Falls, NY , and something to do if you’re a daredevil. Back in the 1830s, a natural cave was discovered behind the Bridal Veil Falls, and people began touring the area.

It wasn’t until the 1920s that the attraction took tourists around the front of Bridal Veil Falls instead of behind it. Either way, it’s quite a thrill and one of the coolest  things to do at Niagara Falls, New York  in the summer.

When you first get to Cave of the Winds, you can explore  The World Changed Here Pavilion , an indoor multimedia exhibit explaining the history of the falls. You’ll also learn how Nikola Tesla designed the first hydro-electric power plant at Niagara Falls.

Once you’re ready to descend 175 feet to the Niagara Gorge, you’ll put on your poncho and take an elevator to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls. From there, you can walk out onto the deck and get as close to the waterfalls as you like. It’s called Cave of the Winds for a reason; it gets  very  windy! The roar of the water can produce hurricane-like conditions, including winds up to 68 mph.

The most intense part of the attraction is the Hurricane Deck. Here, you’ll stand just a few feet from the thunderous waterfalls. It’s definitely a  fun thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY.

Keep in mind that the Cave of the Winds requires timed tickets. The walkway is only open during the summer, but the indoor pavilion operates year-round. The attraction is part of the  half-day tour we took, which also includes the next attraction.

3. Maid of the Mist, the best Niagara Falls boat tour from New York

Another adrenaline-pumping  thing to do at Niagara Falls, NY  is to ride the  Maid of the Mist . The ride takes you through the Niagara Gorge on the American side, although it crosses over the Canadian border for a few minutes.

Standing on the upper deck of the Maid of the Mist might be the  best place to view Niagara Falls, USA . You’ll get up close and personal with the Horseshoe Falls as hundreds of thousands of gallons of water gush over the cliffs each second.

The original Maid of the Mist was an 1846 steamer ferry that linked Toronto and New York City, but it was replaced many years ago. Throughout the years, dozens of celebrities have taken the exciting journey to witness the beauty and power of the falls, including Marilyn Monroe, Stephen Hawking, Sylvester Stallone, and Princess Diana.

This boat ride is a must-do  Niagara Falls attraction in NY . Tours depart every 15 minutes, and the ride lasts for about 20 minutes. Remember that this ride is also included in this half-day tour .

4. Niagara Falls Helicopter Tour from the American side

For a totally unique way to see the falls, I highly recommend a  Niagara Falls helicopter tour from the American side.

This scenic flight takes off just a few miles from the falls and hovers as close as possible to all three waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls.

As you take off from the downtown helipad, you’ll ascend into the sky and fly over the majestic falls. Observe the Niagara River from an entirely new perspective and get spectacular photos of the gorge and rapids.

You’ll also pass over the Rainbow Bridge, Goat Island, and Three Sisters Islands. Take in the stunning scenery and large swaths of swirling blue water from 2,500 feet up. On sunny days, you’re likely to see rainbows in the spray emanating from the falls, a truly magnificent sight.

This  scenic flight  is, without a doubt, the most exciting  thing to do at Niagara Falls, USA . I only wish it were a longer ride! If you want to go all-out,  this combo  includes the Cave of the Winds, the Maid of the Mist, lunch, and a private helicopter ride.

5. Prospect Point and the American Falls Viewing Area

Most postcards you see showing the  view from Niagara Falls, New York,  depict the views from  Prospect Point . That is because it’s the most popular spot to see the American Falls and Niagara Rapids.

From the viewing platform, you can watch the Niagara River drop 50 feet as it rushes closer to the edge of the American Falls. From there, the water pours over the cliff as clouds of mist rise into the air. The entire scene is something you must see to believe.

5. Prospect Point and the American Falls Viewing Area, a great place to go in Niagara Falls NY

Plan to spend some time here to take in all the sights. There are a few viewing platforms, but they can get crowded. However, there are benches where you can rest until a spot clears up. The state renovated the area in 2013, so it has improved walkways.

Prospect Point is a hub for several  things to do on Niagara Falls’ American side . For example, this is where you can find the Maid of the Mist entry point, the Adventure Theater, and the Visitors Center. This is also where you’ll find the Niagara Observation Tower, which I’ll talk about next.

6. Niagara Falls Observation Tower, the best view of Niagara Falls from NY

Niagara Falls Observation Tower  is hands down, the  best way to see Niagara Falls from New York . It’s also known as the Prospect Point Observation Tower because it’s at the Prospect Point viewing area.

The 282-foot Tower is impossible to miss and gives you unparalleled views of the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. You can step onto the extended platform, which juts out over Niagara Gorge, and get stunning views of the Horseshoe Falls in the distance.

The Tower is also the departure point for the Maid of the Mist boat ride. The elevator transports tourists to the base of the waterfall so they can board. However, anyone can go down to the bottom of the Tower to get a unique perspective of the Niagara Gorge and falls.

From here, you can see the moss-covered rocks and feel the sprinkle of mist on your face. This area is known as the “Crow’s Nest”, and while it may look rugged, there is a clear pathway leading to a flight of stairs, so there is nothing to worry about. Besides, it’s the  best place to view Niagara Falls USA  with fresh eyes. For nature lovers and birdwatchers, this area is also a prime location to spot bald eagles or peregrine falcons, so keep your eyes peeled!

There is no entrance fee to the Tower during the winter months. Otherwise, the price is $1.25 or free with a Maid of the Mist ticket. Keep in mind that while the Tower is open year-round, the extended viewing deck is weather-dependent.

7. Luna Island and the Bridal Veil Falls, another great place to visit in the US Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for  where to go in Niagara Falls, USA , you don’t have to look far to find  Luna Island . This tiny cliffside landmass is wedged between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Although it’s small, it provides mighty views that you won’t get anywhere else.

Luna Island is just 350 feet long and 130 feet wide and sits at the northern tip of Goat Island. The island’s cliffs are made of thick dolomite limestone, and the area was once littered with white cedar trees and shrubs. It’s still a beautiful place, especially if you visit at sunset.

What makes Luna Island so spectacular are the great views from the pedestrian bridge. As you stand there and peer over the railing, you’ll marvel at the rushing rapids of the Niagara River. If you glance down, you can look over the Bridal Veil Falls and maybe see tourists at the Cave of the Winds attraction. It’s quite the view and a unique  thing to do on Niagara Falls’ NY side .

8. Niagara Adventure Theater, a popular place to visit in Niagara Falls, USA

The  Niagara Adventure Theater  is a nice  thing to do at Niagara Falls USA  when you need a break from the weather. The theater shows a 30-minute film called  Niagara: Legends of Adventure , which is available in six languages. Throughout the film, you’ll learn about the history of Niagara Falls, as well as some interesting tidbits that will give you a different way to see the falls.

The air-conditioned theater seats over 300 people and features a 45-foot-tall screen. The show plays every 45 minutes, so I wouldn’t plan for more than an hour here. It’s a  fun thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY  with family, plus it gives you a chance to take a breather.

As you watch the film, you’ll learn about the early settlers at Niagara Falls. Explore some of the mysteries and myths surrounding the falls, such as world-record tightrope walks and barrel trips over the falls. You’re sure to hear something interesting you didn’t know before.

The Adventure Theater is at the Niagara Falls Visitor Center, where you can get maps, brochures, souvenirs, and tour referrals and reservations. Also, the theater is included in the  Niagara   Falls USA Discovery Pass , which gives you 30% off admission at several  Niagara Falls, New York attractions .

9. Niagara Falls Fireworks from the American side

The #1 thing to do in  Niagara Falls, NY at night  is to watch the  fireworks and illumination display .

It’s also one of the most romantic things to do, and you shouldn’t be surprised if you see lots of couples sharing an intimate moment during the show. That said, the fireworks display is family-friendly and is the ideal way to end your day at the park.

This fabulous show is super popular, so I suggest finding a spot early to make sure you have a good view. The fireworks show, which has been going on for over 25 years, is visible from the American and Canadian sides. If you’re in the U.S., the best views are from Prospect Point or the Rainbow Bridge, although you’ll be able to see the fireworks from other places in the park.

This is a lesser-known  place to visit near Niagara Falls, USA  but it’s well worth a trip. The islands were originally known as the Moss Islands, but the name was changed to Three Sisters Islands in 1817.

Footbridges from Goat Island connect the small isles for easy access. Each of the islands has a beautiful landscape providing unique views of the Niagara River rapids upstream and the Horseshoe Falls. The walking paths around the island are wide and quite relaxing, perfect for a short detour from the main Niagara Falls NY attractions.

11. Niagara Gorge Discovery Center & Hiking Trails

Niagara Gorge Discovery Center is a child-friendly  museum in Niagara Falls, NY  with interactive exhibits that teach visitors about the area’s history and geology. Learn about how the last Ice Age created these magnificent waterfalls and how they continue to change to this day. There are also interesting displays about Nikola Tesla and the hydroelectric power station, as well as a 180° theater experience.

A hiking adventure is another fun  thing to do in Niagara Falls, USA, with kids . While not all the trails are suitable for youngsters, there are several paths starting at the  Niagara Gorge Trailhead Building , where hiking tours are available from May to October.

11. Niagara Gorge Discovery Center & Hiking Trails, one of the best things to do in Niagara Falls NY for families

The  Great Gorge Scenic Overlook Hike  is an easy one-hour path that gives you nice views without much work. The  Upper Great Gorge Hike is also beginner-friendly. It takes two hours to complete and follows the  Great Gorge Railway Trail , which is short but scenic.

For a more moderate hike, try the  Devil’s Hole Rapids and Giant Rock  trail, which takes about 2.5 hours to complete. The  Whirlpool Rapids Adventure Hike  is the most challenging and will require some trekking over boulders. It’ll take you to Whirlpool State Park, which I’ll talk about in the next section.

12. Whirlpool State Park, the most beautiful place to visit in Niagara Falls New York

Wondering  what to do at Niagara Falls, NY besides visiting the falls?  Whirlpool State Park  is one of the pretty areas you’ll find off the beaten path. If you want to get away from the crowds for a bit, I highly recommend checking this park out.

Whirlpool State Park is a scenic region covering nearly 110 acres. To get there, you can follow the  Niagara Gorge Rim Trail .

The park itself is a two-tiered area just north of the tourist center. The street level has beautiful overlooks where you can see the Niagara Gorge and rapids. But to get closer, go to the riverbank by taking the stairs down at the southern end of the park, next to the Whirlpool Bridge.

Here, you’ll get to witness the  Niagara Whirlpool , one of the most  fun things to do in Niagara Falls, NY . At its deepest, the whirlpool is 125 feet deep. It’s the result of the gorge creating a nearly 90° change in the water flow direction. Combined with the speed of the rapids (30-35 mph), it creates a natural whirlpool.

This is where the  Whirlpool Rapids Trail  meanders along the gorge and river. Another great thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY for families is to continue onto the  Devil’s Hole Trail , which makes a loop and returns to Whirlpool State Park.

13. Visit Devil’s Hole State Park, another thing to do near Niagara Falls, NY

Devil’s Hole State Park  is smaller and a bit further north, but still a great  Niagara USA attraction .

The area overlooks the Devil’s Hole Rapids and the lower Niagara Gorge. For the history buffs, this was the former site of a Native American port, although early European settlers fought for control of the region. Anyway, the area became a state park in 1924, making it one of the oldest in the country.

Here, you’ll get unique  Niagara Falls views from New York , although you’ll see the rapids more than the actual waterfalls. In fact, Devil’s Hole was the initial starting point of the falls before the escarpment eventually eroded. It’s still a sight to see, so take the Devil’s Hole Trail to get closer to the river and loop around to Whirlpool State Park to enjoy some great views.

A good portion of the park and trail is shrouded in tree canopies, so it offers respite from the heat if you’re traveling in the summer. This is one of the  places to visit near Niagara Falls USA  if you want to get up close and personal with the roaring rapids.

14. Whirlpool Jet Boat tour, one of the top-rated tourist attractions in Niagara Falls NY

If you travel here between May and October, a  Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour  is a top  thing to do on the American side of Niagara Falls . You’ve seen the Niagara Whirlpool, but only from the land; how about a boat ride right into the rapids?

This   Jet Boat tour  travels upriver into the Niagara Gorge, then to the Whirlpool, and through the Devil’s Hole Rapids before coming back to the dock. You’ll be about a mile from the falls, so you don’t have to worry about tumbling over the cascading water. However, bear in mind that you will be completely soaked from top to bottom, so bring a change of clothes and a towel.

The boat ride is a great family  attraction at Niagara Falls, USA,  and the perfect balance of thrilling excitement and safety. The boat captains are super skilled and can perform maneuvers like 360° turns to really get your adrenaline pumping.

The jet boat tour covers about 18 miles in 45 minutes, and along the way, your guide will tell you about the history and geology of your natural surroundings.

This  Niagara Falls New York attraction  is safe, but quite a rush, so be prepared!

15. Nikola Tesla Monument, an interesting place to visit on the American side of Niagara Falls

Not far from the Cave of the Winds attraction is the  Nikola Tesla Monument  on Goat Island. Tesla’s name is synonymous with futuristic electrical engineering, but many might not realize his story includes Niagara Falls.

In 1893, the Serbian-American inventor and engineer was called to Niagara Falls when the Cataract Construction Company wanted his advice on how to optimize their hydropower plant. His proposed plan of using an alternating current induction motor was a huge success, and part of the reason there are so many  things to do on Niagara Falls’ NY side .

The Nikola Tesla Monument was a gift to the United States from Yugoslavia in 1976 and remains a popular  Niagara Falls, New York attraction . The statue features a seated Tesla poring over blueprints for some type of project, perhaps the hydroelectric plant. The paper slightly droops between his hands, creating the perfect little seat for tourists who want a photo op with Tesla.

If you want something to eat while visiting the American Niagara Falls, head to the  Top of the Falls Restaurant . It’s the only dining spot that overlooks the falls, making it a top  Niagara USA attraction .

The restaurant has a family-friendly atmosphere, although dining here is a nice  thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY for couples . The building has a semi-circular design with rows of tables lining the floor-to-ceiling windows. Also, since the restaurant is on the upper level, everyone gets exquisite, uninterrupted views of the falls while they dine.

The menu is a modern take on American favorites and some classic dishes. For example, you can order fish and chips, Niagara-inspired burgers, vegetarian dishes, craft beer, delectable desserts, and more. Through a partnership with Taste NY, many of the restaurant’s ingredients are locally sourced. Top of the Falls has a casual vibe and is moderately priced, so most visitors can afford to eat here.

This dining spot is only open May through September, but it’s the  best place to view Niagara Falls, USA  while staying comfortable and satiated.

17. Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, the best thing to do in Niagara Falls New York at night

A visit to the  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino  is something to do in Niagara Falls NY at night  if you’re looking for entertainment and nightlife.

The Seneca Casino was the state’s competitive response to Ontario, Canada’s two casinos. Formerly the Niagara Falls Convention & Civic Center, Seneca is now the largest New York resort outside of Manhattan. Here, you’ll find all kinds of  activities in Niagara Falls USA  for the adult crowd. The 147,000ft² casino has over 2,000 slot machines, nearly 100 gaming tables, live poker, and more.

It’s not all about gambling here either. You can take a break from the games and head to the resort’s  Seneca Niagara Events Center for a show. The 2,400-seat theater hosts musicians, comedians, concerts, and other performances.

For some rest and rejuvenation, check out the full-service spa or enjoy a delicious meal at one of the fine-dining spots. Take your pick from a diverse palate, including Asian, Italian, and classic American fare. There are also several high-end retail stores that you can peruse, including Swarovski.

The Seneca Resort offers plenty of  fun things to do near Niagara Falls, NY . When it’s time to call it a night, stay over at the hotel , which has over 600 rooms and suites. I’ll talk more about the accommodations a bit later.

18. Visit Old Fort Niagara, one of the best things to do on the American side of Niagara Falls

Visiting  Old Fort Niagara is one of the most popular  things to do around Niagara Falls, NY . Located in Youngstown, the colonial fortification sits at the edge of the Niagara River where it meets Lake Ontario. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the falls, but you can take this tour to visit it.

Old Fort Niagara is home to over 300 years of history, so it’s the perfect  Niagara Falls USA attraction for history buffs. The old “French Castle” was built by the French North American Empire back in 1726. The land was later seized by Great Britain, followed by the United States.

The  Visitors Center  doubles as a public museum where you can see over 100,000 artifacts, including arrowheads, weaponry, furniture, clothing, military accouterments, and the original War of 1812 Flag. Don’t forget to stop by the historic lighthouse, constructed in 1872, and keep an eye out for the supposed ghost that haunts the grounds. Legend says he’s a decapitated French soldier looking for his head.

The entire area is part of  Fort Niagara State Park , which provides plenty of recreational areas, including hiking paths. The stone entrance, the  Gate of the Five Nations , is named in honor of the Iroquois Confederacy.

19. Niagara Falls Shopping Outlet Tour on the US side

While I hope this won’t be the case, you might find yourself wondering  what to do at Niagara Falls, NY  on a rainy day. If bad weather threatens your trip, you could always visit the  Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls .

This shopping center is just 15 minutes outside of Niagara Falls State Park, so it’s an easy  thing to do around Niagara  on a whim. Situated near the U.S.-Canada border, it’s one of the largest indoor retail outlets in the United States, boasting over 200 stores.

As a fashion outlet, this center offers steep discounts on name-brand items and luxury gifts. Whether you want to shop for yourself or a loved one, you’ll find just about anything here. Some of the retailers here include Kate Spade, Nike Factory, Michael Kors, Under Armour, Columbia, and Vera Bradley.

There is also a food court with casual dining options, and there is free Wi-Fi throughout the center. Shopaholics from Ontario and New York flock to the outlets for the best deals. If you need an  activity to do in Niagara Falls, NY when the weather’s bad, this tour  might be just the ticket.

20. Wine Tasting Tour Niagara Falls USA Side

A  wine tasting tour  is a unique  thing to do in Niagara Falls, NY  if you have the time. And if you’re a wine lover, of course!

Along with the Niagara Falls New York tourist attractions , the area has a fast-growing wine country. Touring Niagara’s wine trail may be the more laid-back activity you’re looking for, and there are several wineries within 30 minutes of the waterfalls.

The  Village Vineyard  and  Bella Rose Vineyard  are in nearby Lewiston, NY. The latter is the newest addition to the Niagara Wine Trail and offers a range of dry and sweet wines in addition to craft beers.

Long Cliff Winery  was established in 2011 and is a family-run operation. The 5-acre vineyard supplies the grapes for crowd favorites like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Riesling.  A Gust of Sun Winery  has a quaint, homey feel and is owned by a wine aficionado couple.

There are two award-winning wineries located a bit further from Niagara Falls.  Arrowhead Spring Vineyard  in Lockport offers sustainably made Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more.  Schulze Vineyards and Winery  in Burt is a family-run farm on the shores of Lake Ontario and well worth the trip.

This wine tasting tour  will take you to four or more vineyards, where you can walk through the groves and enjoy a sip or two of your favorite wine. I think this is a nice  thing for couples to do in Niagara Falls, NY , but it would also make a fun girls day.

To make the most of our time, we hopped in the car right after work and arrived at Niagara Falls, New York at night. After a night of rest, we were able to get up early the next day and have all day to see the  Niagara Falls, New York attractions  before heading to the Canadian side for the fireworks.

Best of all, it only took us 20 minutes to walk to Terrapin Point, one of the top  places to visit near Niagara Falls, USA . If you stay at this hotel, I suggest requesting a room on an upper floor. While you can’t see the falls directly from the hotel, you’ll get beautiful views. Plus, you can see the nighttime fireworks from your room, which is convenient if you don’t feel like going out!

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls

If you’re looking for another good hotel to stay at in Niagara Falls, USA, the   Hyatt Place Niagara Falls  is a great option.

This accommodation is located a little closer to Niagara Falls on the U.S. side, which is very convenient. Also, it is next to Old Falls Street, a small entertainment district where you’ll find great good, shopping, shows, and family activities. If you’re not sure  what to do in Niagara Falls, New York , you can always go there.

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls, a good hotel in Niagara Falls, USA

Hyatt Place Niagara Falls is also close to the Rainbow Bridge, which you can take to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

While the prices are similar, this hotel isn’t as nice as the Seneca Resort, but it’s still a good option if you need a place to stay overnight.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York

The   DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls New York   is another accommodation that I recommend on the American side of Niagara Falls. While it’s a bit further away than the previous two hotels, the location is still very good.

The rooms come with nice amenities and they’re very spacious. Some of the rooms offer lovely views of the Niagara River, while others overlook the city. I suggest requesting a riverside room, as it’s a more pleasant view.

Overall, this is a hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, that you can book without hesitation. It’s comfortable, affordable, and clean.

Sheraton Niagara Falls

The   Sheraton Niagara Falls   is one of the hotels in Niagara Falls, New York, that I recommend if you want to be close to the falls without breaking the bank. While it’s not the cheapest option, the price is quite good for the location.

Also, the hotel has a connective corridor to the Seneca Resort, so it’s super easy to go to the casino and enjoy some of the facilities.

Sheraton Niagara Falls, a place to stay in Niagara Falls, USA

The unique thing about the Sheraton hotel is its Reed Beach Club, which has the largest indoor pool in Niagara Falls. So, not only is this a good place to get some rest, but it’s got plenty of amenities to keep you entertained during your stay.

Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls

The last hotel that I recommend is the  Wyndham Garden at Niagara Falls , which is a great option for travelers on a budget.

For an inexpensive hotel in Niagara Falls, USA, the location isn’t bad at all. Plus, it’s the best choice if you’re planning on walking over to the Canadian side of the falls since it’s just five minutes from the bridge.

How to get to Niagara Falls New York side

If you don’t know how to get to the American side of Niagara Falls, I’ll go over all the options here.

First, the easiest way to get there is usually to drive. We took our car to Niagara Falls, NY, but you could also rent a car. We even have a guide to   finding cheap rental cars . There are lots of  places to visit near Niagara Falls, USA , so having a vehicle is an advantage.

FIND CHEAP RENTAL CARS IN THE US

If you’re traveling in New York City and don’t want to drive 6+ hours to Niagara Falls (it’s one of the most popular road trips from NYC ), I suggest taking a guided tour from NYC to Niaga Falls like  this one-day tour by bus. There is also a  two-day tour by bus  that includes more  attractions in Niagara Falls, NY .

Or, if you would like to visit the American side of Niagara Falls on your own, you can search for plane tickets on Kiwi.com or   Skyscanner . These are the websites we usually use to find cheap flights.

The closest U.S. airport to Niagara Falls is the  Buffalo-Niagara International Airport , which is about 25 miles from Niagara Falls. The airport offers convenient shuttles and public transportation to many popular  things to do in Niagara Falls, USA . That said, you can also rent a car from the airport.

How to get around Niagara Falls, New York

If you’re not going to travel in your own car, one of your biggest concerns will be how to get around to all the  attractions in Niagara Falls, USA .

Fortunately, most of the tourist things to do around Niagara Falls in New York are fairly close to each other. You can walk just about everywhere, although there are shuttles to several attractions. We didn’t even have to move our car at all except at the end of our visit when we went to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls.

Walking is the most common way to get around in Niagara Falls State Park. If that’s going to be an issue for you or a family member, there are a few public transportation options. The  Niagara Scenic Trolley  runs through the park, and the  NFTA transit network  circulates through the entire city.

The transportation options in Niagara Falls, USA are quite good, so you’ll have no problems accessing all the fun things to do in Niagara Falls, NY .

If you’re traveling in your own car, you may be wondering how is the parking at Niagara Falls, USA. Most Niagara Falls, U.S. attractions have parking fees but they are affordable.

Before you spend the night here, I recommend considering what to do at Niagara Falls, NY . This way, you can check each of those attractions for parking availability. I also suggest checking the hotel’s parking rates. Some accommodations include free parking, and that’s always a win-win.

In case your accommodation doesn’t offer free parking, you may want to keep your car somewhere else. Look at the different things to do near Niagara Falls, NY,  and see if any of those places have paid parking lots. Several areas near the Niagara Falls State Park charge day and overnight rates, so that may be a viable option.

Niagara Falls Border Crossings – How to get from the U.S. side to the Canadian side

If you’re not sure how to get to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls from New York, the easiest way is by crossing the Rainbow Bridge. You can walk across the bridge or go by car or bus. Regardless of how you get across, you will be going into another country, so you’ll need to present the appropriate documents to cross the border. I also recommend having travel insurance for Canada , since you won’t have coverage with your primary medical insurance once you cross the border.

American citizens must have a valid U.S. passport or proof of permanent residence in the United States. If you’re a citizen of another country besides the United States, check   here   to see what documents you need.

Moreover, if you’re going to use a rental car to go to Canada, you should check first with the rental company. They may or may not allow you to take the vehicle into another country.

'A huge milestone': Record-breaking year for tourism spending in Niagara County, surpassing $1 billion

NIAGARA FALLS N.Y. (WKBW) — When you think back to 2020, a time when travel was nearly at a standstill, it's hard to believe that just a few years later, Niagara County is celebrating a tourism milestone.

"I was completely elated," said John Percy, President & CEO of Destination Niagara USA. "I never thought...in my lifetime that I would see tourism surpass a billion dollars."

But it did in 2023, reaching a total of $1,082,000 in tourism spending in 2023, an 11.7% increase from 2022.

What's behind this boost? Percy says it's no one organization; it's hotels, food and beverage, attractions and people across the county who contribute to that number.

But he points to three key factors:

• Revenge travel (pent-up demand post-COVID)
• Accessibility/affordablility
• International travel bouncing back

"It's been 43 years trying to get here," said Ruby Finnery, who's visiting with her husband Michael from Dallas. "Everybody was talking about it, so we finally decided let's go this is it, we're here and enjoying every second."

And when Niagara County makes money, neighbors save money.

"If tourism wasn't in here at the level that it is in Niagara County, they would pay an additional $1,205 dollars, per household in Niagara County," said Percy.

So how do you keep that momentum going?

"We have to challenge ourselves," said Percy. "We want that new market that we haven't tackled before and we also are really proactively working on international business,"

Percy says things look good, if not better, in 2024.
