La tour Victoria (ex- IBM) a officiellement ouvert ses portes

Entre les parasols ouverts, une brise printanière balaye les tables protégées par d’épaisses vitres. Derrière cette barrière translucide, l’œil survole le parc Botanique, les boulevards centraux, la cathédrale, et atterrit dans le Pajottenland. Sans doute grâce à la météo clémente de ce 31 mai. Sans doute aussi grâce à l’idée de transformer le toit d’une austère tour de bureau monofonctionnelle en terrasse de restaurant.

Le rooftop de la tour Victoria est-il le plus beau de Bruxelles ? Peut-être. Il inaugure en tout cas ce que promoteurs et autorités décrivent de concert comme “le renouveau du quartier Nord”. Nantie d’un nouvel hôtel, de deux restos et d’un centre de coworking, l’ancienne tour IBM a ouvert ses portes à Saint-Josse. On visite l’ancien QG de la police, qui se cherchait un commandement depuis 2014.

Une rénovation “circulaire” pour “activer le quartier”

L’ancienne tour IBM a conservé ses lignes verticales et sa blancheur. Elle a aussi conservé sa structure de béton. Ce sont les architectes du bureau bruxellois 51N4E qui ont assuré sa reconversion. En suivant la ligne la plus circulaire possible. Pour la déco aussi, des matériaux de récup ont été employés. L’objectif était d’atteindre 80 % de réemploi. Le béton à lui seul représente déjà 65 %. Si vous y grimpez pour manger, vous y verrez dans les ascenceurs des carrelages fournis par le spécialiste du circulaire Rotor. Des enduits basés sur des terres de chantier récupérées par BC Materials ont aussi été appliqués. “Nous ne nous sommes pas uniquement concentrés sur les émissions de CO2”, assure Johan Anrys, de 51N4E. “La tour était une île dans le quartier. Sans vie. Nos interventions, minimales, ont un gros impact. Le lieu est désormais accessible par 3 façades, les gens peuvent entrer, on a dessiné une continuité avec la ville”. L’esplanade de pavés roses, dessinée par Bas Smets n’y est pas pour rien.

Un hôtel branché comme une “maison ouverte”

Le locataire le plus en vue de la tour, c’est The Hoxton. Les lettres de la chaîne hôtelière britannique se découpent comme des pions de Scrabble sur l’ivoire de la façade. Mais à l’intérieur, on flirte avec le baroque orientalisant. La multinationale londonienne est connue pour viser des quartiers délaissés dont elle impulse la mutation. “Dans la rue où on s’est implanté à Paris, il n’y avait rien. Maintenant, il y a un étoilé Michelin”, vante Chaim Scheepers, directeur général de The Hoxton Bruxelles. La recette éprouvée à Londres, Portland, Amsterdam ou Rome prendra-t-elle à Bruxelles ? “Croyez-moi, j’ai beaucoup voyagé. Des lobbys d’hôtels où on entre et où on n’ose pas demander si on peut avoir une bière, j’en ai vu. Nous, on est une 'maison ouverte'. On aime que les riverains viennent nous voir. Si nos 198 chambres sont occupées par deux clients et qu’ils sont tous ensemble dans nos deux restaurants, il restera encore des places”, promet le manager, qui loue l’accessibilité du quartier et l’arrivée imminente du nouveau campus sur Pacheco. “L’horeca fait parfois la chasse à ceux qui restent des heures sur leur ordinateur en buvant 3 cafés. Nous, on adore ça !” The Hoxton prévoit d’ailleurs d’implanter un coworking sur 4 étages.

Un précurseur dans le futur “quartier des rooftops”

Le Secrétaire d’état à l’Urbanisme Pascal Smet (Vooruit) salue le culot de la chaîne hôtelière dans son choix du quartier Nord. “D’autres n’ont pas osé” Le socialiste y voit “un début”. Il pointe : “Par rapport à d’autres villes européennes, on est carrément en retard concernant la mixité des tours et l’accessibilité de leurs rooftops. Mais on rattrape le temps perdu”. On sait l’ambition de Smet pour le quartier Nord où il veut insuffler une vie après les heures de bureau, notamment en conditionnant les permis de reconversion à l’implantation de logements, commerces ou services. “Il faut vivre la ville différemment. Résider et vivre, ce n’est pas la même chose”. Des logements sont donc prévus au CCN de la gare du Nord, dans une des tours Proximus et une autre du WTC. Quant aux vues panoramiques, Smet voit dans les environs “un futur quartier des rooftops”. Il cite l’ancien Sheraton rénové pour fin 2023, l’hôtel The Standard en 2024 au ZIN (ex-WTC), le DoubleTree (Hilton) place Rogier et élargit jusqu’au Centre Monnaie. “Il va y avoir une vie nocturne, les gens mangeront, des DJ joueront”. Quid de la cohabitation avec les nouveaux habitants ? “Il ne faudra pas jouer à fond jusqu’à 2h du matin”. La mésaventure du Fuse reste évidemment en mémoire.

Une recette d’un million d’euros et “des emplois” pour Saint-Josse

Cordon d’inauguration à la poche du costume, le Bourgmestre de Saint-Josse Emir Kir se félicite lui aussi de l’arrivée de ces nouveaux acteurs sur son sol. “Avec The Hoxton, on peut tabler sur une recette annuelle d’un million d’euros pour Saint-Josse”, évalue-t-il. “Avec le Sheraton, on espère même un million et demi à deux millions”. L’ex-tour IBM se dit “ouverte sur le quartier”. Kir y voit de son côté “une opportunité d’emploi pour les habitants”. La commune a d’ailleurs organisé une bourse à l’emploi avec son nouveau partenaire hôtelier “qui a touché plus d’une centaine de participants, dont certains ont été engagés. Ce processus d’embauche n’est pas achevé pour tous les candidats”. Les agences de com du WPP Group, qui réunit ses 12 bureaux sur le nouveau site, se sont installées sur 7 étages. Des profils variés qui feront vivre le quartier selon Kir. “Ces emplois en feront des ambassadeurs de Saint-Josse. C’est aussi comme ça qu’on contribue au vivre-ensemble et à la sécurité”. Dont on sait qu’elle reste un enjeu majeur dans le Quartier Nord.

3. SOKO Rooftop – excentré mais canon

Le Soko Rooftop est le rooftop le plus excentré de notre sélection, mais cela ne l’empêche pas d’offrir une expérience unique. Situé à Kraainem, dans la périphérie de Bruxelles, ce rooftop a ouvert ses portes en juin 2021 et offre une vue imprenable sur la magnifique forêt de Soignes. C’est l’endroit idéal pour profiter d’un moment calme et dépaysant, loin de l’agitation de la ville.

Le Soko Rooftop est particulièrement apprécié pour sa carte de cocktails et de tapas fusion. Les baos et les brochettes de poulet à la sauce teriyaki sont à tomber et les mochis glacés sont une délicieuse douceur pour terminer la soirée en beauté. Et bien sûr, la vue sur la forêt de Soignes est tout simplement spectaculaire.

Il est important de noter que la réservation est obligatoire en soirée, car le Soko Rooftop est très prisé.

Mais si vous avez la chance de vous y rendre, vous ne serez pas déçu. Ouvert tous les jours de midi à 22h00, ce rooftop est l’endroit idéal pour se régaler les pupilles et les papilles.

4. Le Secret Rooftop by Warwick

Le Secret Rooftop de l’ hôtel Warwick est un véritable bijou caché au cœur de la ville. Ce bar sur le toit offre une vue imprenable sur la Grand-Place de Bruxelles et ses alentours. Il est idéal pour se détendre avec un cocktail ou une boisson rafraîchissante en admirant la vue panoramique sur la ville. 5. Solar Rooftop – sur le toit des Bozar

Le Solar Rooftop au Bozar est une nouvelle adresse incontournable pour les amateurs de rooftop à Bruxelles. Niché sur le toit du Palais des Beaux-Arts, cet espace vert récemment rénové offre une vue imprenable sur la ville. Le rooftop est ouvert 7 jours sur 7 entre 17h et 23h . Dès 17h, Daniel et son équipe se mettent en quatre pour offrir à chacun un moment exceptionnel. Les jeudis, vendredis et samedis, un DJ crée une ambiance musicale. La carte propose une large sélection de cocktails et de mocktails maison, de champagnes, d’alcools et de vins, accompagnée de nombreuses options de petites bouchées et de planches à partager.

L’ambiance y est à la fois branchée et détendue, parfaite pour une soirée afterwork ou un moment de détente en fin de journée.

Des mets délicats et raffinés tels que ceviche de poissons ou de légumes, tartare de betterave, brochettes de poulet tex-mex… accompagneront votre apéritif. Le restaurant The 1040, situé au rez-de-chaussée de l’hôtel propose une cuisine belge moderne et inventive, qui revisite les classiques de la gastronomie locale avec une touche contemporaine.

7. Albert Summer Rooftop

Si vous cherchez un endroit pour boire un verre en groupe dans un cadre magnifique, l’Albert Summer Rooftop est l’adresse qu’il vous faut. Ce rooftop éphémère est situé sur le toit du Palais de Charles de Lorraine, rue du Musée, à Bruxelles.

Une fois sur place, vous pourrez profiter d’une vue panoramique sur la ville tout en sirotant une boisson rafraîchissante.

Le mobilier multicolore et l’ambiance décontractée donnent à ce lieu une atmosphère amicale et agréable. Vous aurez l’embarras du choix en termes de boissons, notamment avec la sélection de bières proposée. Vous pourrez également opter pour l’un des cocktails savamment préparés par le barman ou choisir une bouteille de vin dans la large sélection.

Le rooftop est accessible depuis la Bibliothèque royale Albertine, au cinquième étage, où vous pourrez profiter d’un panorama sur Bruxelles. L’équipe du restaurant Albert vous accueille dans une ambiance détendue sur sa terrasse. Vous pourrez vous y rendre du mardi au dimanche et entrer par le très chic escalier en marbre du Palais de Charles de Lorraine.

8. Le Beursschouwburg : centre d’art et rooftop au cœur de Bruxelles

Le Beursschouwburg est l’un des centres culturels les plus dynamiques de Bruxelles, avec une programmation diversifiée et un toit-terrasse qui offre une vue unique sur le quartier de la Bourse. Bien qu’il ne soit accessible que lors de certains événements, le rooftop est une véritable expérience pour les amateurs de musique et de culture.

En juin, le Beursschouwburg lance sa période de concerts gratuits. Les jeudis, vendredis et samedis, le grand public pourra monter sur le toit de 17h à 3h du matin pour assister à des concerts à partir de 20h. L’endroit est une véritable oasis pour les amateurs de musique et de culture qui cherchent un lieu original pour se détendre et apprécier la vue panoramique sur la ville.

9. Le COOP – alternatif et culturel

Si vous cherchez à découvrir un rooftop d’un autre type, ne manquez pas le COOP. Niché dans une ancienne meunerie datant de 1904 sur un site de plus de 5 000 mètres carrés en bordure du canal à Anderlecht, le COOP est un concept de découverte des quartiers bruxellois. Outre ses activités culturelles, le COOP dispose également d’une terrasse située sur son toit, offrant une vue imprenable sur la vallée de la Senne.

Le lieu propose une sélection de bières artisanales et de repas à petits prix, et vous pouvez même apporter votre propre pique-nique .

Le COOP propose également des apéros afterwork jusqu’à 18h (20h30 le vendredi), l’occasion idéale pour profiter de la vue panoramique sur le canal et la ville.

Le rooftop est ouvert du lundi au jeudi de 10h à 18h30 et le vendredi de 11h30 à 19h30. Vous pourrez profiter d’une expérience culturelle unique tout en sirotant une boisson rafraîchissante et en dégustant une collation à petits prix. Ne manquez pas cette opportunité de découvrir un autre type de rooftop à Bruxelles.

10. Le rooftop du WIELS – industriel et contemporain

Le Musée Wiels est un incontournable pour les amateurs d’art contemporain et de patrimoine industriel. Niché dans l’ancienne brasserie Wielemans, un des symboles du patrimoine industriel de Bruxelles, le Musée Wiels dispose d’une magnifique terrasse panoramique sur son toit où sont organisés divers événements culturels et festifs. Malheureusement, pour l’instant, le bar sur le rooftop n’est pas encore ouvert mais devrait l’être cet été 2024.

L’équipe de l’établissement assure être en train de s’organiser mais ne donne pas de date précise. En attendant, profitez-en pour visiter les collections peu ordinaires du musée et découvrir l’histoire de ce bâtiment exceptionnel. Lors de la réouverture, ne manquez pas l’occasion de boire un verre tout en admirant la vue imprenable sur la ville.

11. Tope à la tour Victoria (hôtel The Hoxton)

La tour Victoria, anciennement connue sous le nom de Tour IBM, a été métamorphosée en un rooftop branché et ouvert au public. Niché au sommet de l’hôtel The Hoxton , ce lieu offre une vue panoramique époustouflante sur Bruxelles. Avec ses parasols, ses tables protégées par des vitres épaisses et une brise printanière agréable, le rooftop invite les visiteurs à se détendre tout en admirant le paysage, du parc Botanique au Pajottenland. Cette transformation audacieuse de la tour de bureau en une terrasse animée témoigne du renouveau du quartier Nord de Bruxelles.

Le rooftop de la tour Victoria, rebaptisé Tope, est considéré comme l’un des plus beaux de Bruxelles. Situé au sommet de l’hôtel The Hoxton, il offre une expérience complète avec des restaurants, des bars et des espaces de coworking. Que ce soit pour profiter du soleil, déguster une cuisine latino-américaine savoureuse ou simplement se détendre avec une vue panoramique imprenable sur la ville, ce rooftop est devenu un incontournable pour les habitants et les touristes à la recherche d’une expérience unique dans la capitale belge.

12. Play label Rooftop

Situé entre deux des plus beaux quartiers de Bruxelles, le Sablon et les Marolles, vous y accéderez en entrant au Crosly Bowling, prenez l’ascenseur par l’entrée principale (l’entrée est gratuite) et en un rien de temps, vous pourrez profiter d’une vue magnifique sur Bruxelles. Ajoutez une bonne musique électronique, des cocktails et des chaises longues confortables.

Le rooftop 58 (tirant son nom de l’ancien Parking 58) a été construit au sommet du nouveau Centre administratif de la Ville de Bruxelles ( Brucity ). Il dispose d’un vaste bar offrant une vue panoramique à 360 degrés sur la capitale.

La capacité maximale de ce rooftop panoramique qui est le plus grand d’Europe est de 500 personnes. Pas de réservation possible, le système choisi est «  premier arrivé, premier servi « .

La tour IBM, métamorphosée, s’appelle maintenant Victoria

L’ancienne tour ibm, métamorphosée, s’appelle désormais victoria. inaugurée ce mercredi, la tour est un projet mixte avec des bureaux, un hôtel, un restaurant et un espace de co-working..

C’est un bâtiment emblématique du Quartier Nord qui a rouvert ces portes ce jeudi. La tour IBM, désormais “Victoria” a fait peau neuve. Au 22ème étage de l’immeuble, trône désormais un bar rooftop. La tour accueille aussi un groupe d’agences de communication international, une chaîne hôtelière et des bureaux.

“ Avant, c’était un bureau simple, monofonctionnel, fermé après 17h. Aujourd’hui, avec l’hôtel, les bureaux et le co-working, il vivra 24h/24, 7 jours sur 7 “, se réjouit Johan Anrys, architecte du cabinet 51N4E. Un espace de co-travail de 3000m² a également été pensé, son ouverture est prévue pour fin août.

L’architecture de l’édifice, construit en 1978, et les matériaux d’origine ont été conservés au maximum. Le bâtiment de 80 mètres de haut, désormais rénové, s’intègre dans un plan plus global porté par la Région bruxelloise, comme l’explique Pascal Smet, secrétaire d’État bruxellois chargé de l’Urbanisme : “ On voit vraiment une volonté du gouvernement de verduriser, de remettre la vie dans le quartier et de le considérer comme un quartier important de Bruxelles. Ce n’est pas toujours le cas aujourd’hui “.

C’est l’aboutissement d’une rénovation qui aura duré 2 ans. Ces travaux n’auront pas été sans difficulté, principalement à cause de la pénurie de matériaux liés à la crise Covid.

La rénovation de la tour Victoria marque le renouveau du quartier nord de Bruxelles

À Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, la tour Victoria, rénovée par le cabinet d'architectes 51N4E , a été officiellement inaugurée. Aujourd'hui, l'ancienne tour IBM est un bâtiment multifonctionnel et un symbole fort de la revalorisation du quartier nord de Bruxelles. En outre, la tour Victoria est également un exemple de circularité et de reconversion.

DES BUREAUX, UNE CHAÎNE HÔTELIÈRE INTERNATIONALE, DES RESTAURANTS ET UN ROOFTOP.

De nombreux Bruxellois se souviennent de la tour Victoria, dans le quartier nord, comme de l'ancien siège des bureaux d'IBM. Aujourd'hui, la tour est le nouveau siège du groupe de médias WPP et la première succursale en Belgique de la chaîne hôtelière The Hoxton. Elle offre également des espaces de travail, deux restaurants et un bar sur le toit. Cette transformation ambitieuse crée des emplois locaux supplémentaires et est typique de la revalorisation actuelle du quartier nord de Bruxelles. Avec "Territoire Nord", le secrétaire d'État Pascal Smet a proposé l'année dernière son plan pour redonner vie au quartier nord monofonctionnel. Une quarantaine de projets publics et privés devraient créer plus de vie, de verdure, de culture et de liens dans le quartier au cours des dix prochaines années. La transformation de la Victoria Tower en un lieu de travail et de détente s'inscrit déjà parfaitement dans cette stratégie.

"Le quartier nord est en train de subir une gigantesque métamorphose, et c'est maintenant que cela se passe ! Victoria est un pionnier pour l'ensemble du quartier. Le bâtiment et le nouvel espace public qui l'entoure illustrent parfaitement notre vision du quartier nord. Aujourd'hui, nous corrigeons une erreur historique du passé et transformons ce quartier de bureaux ennuyeux en un quartier vivant avec de nombreuses fonctions urbaines". - Secrétaire d'Etat à l'Urbanisme Pascal Smet -

CIRCULARITÉ ET RECONVERSION

Le projet de rénovation de la Victoria Tower a été réalisé par le bureau d'architecture 51N4E à la demande des promoteurs immobiliers DWNTWN et Baltisse. Le cahier des charges ? Redonner à ce célèbre bâtiment bruxellois son lustre d'antan tout en le rendant pérenne. Pour ce faire, l'architecte, en collaboration avec le bureau de conseil en durabilité SuReal, a pris des décisions innovantes. La conception architecturale a été conservée et autant d'éléments et de matériaux que possible ont été réutilisés au cours du processus de construction.

ÉLÉMENTS ESSENTIELS DE LA TOUR VICTORIA ÉCONOME EN ÉNERGIE

L'ensemble de la structure en béton, qui représente environ 65 % du volume du bâtiment, a été conservé. La rénovation et la façade de la tour Victoria permettent d'accueillir d'autres éléments de remplissage à l'avenir. Ainsi, en cas de changement de fonction à l'avenir (lorsque des appartements avec fenêtres ouvrantes seront construits, par exemple), il ne sera pas nécessaire d'installer une nouvelle façade, mais la façade actuelle sera simplement réutilisée.

Des matériaux de construction d'origine locale ont été utilisés, tels que des enduits de terre locale et des matériaux de construction recyclés provenant de la coopérative bruxelloise Rotor. Le bâtiment n'utilise pas de combustibles fossiles ("Fossil Fuel Free") et des panneaux solaires ont également été installés. Le bâtiment rénové a donc reçu la certification "Excellent en utilisation" de BREEAM, qui est le principal système de certification scientifique au monde pour les environnements construits de manière durable.

L'architecte Johan Anrys de 51N4E a de grandes ambitions pour l'avenir : "L'architecture est un processus de connexion qui permet de créer des changements significatifs".

The guinguettes are back in town: Celebrating Brussels' summer bars

Hot town, summer in the city… well the sun is finally making an occasional appearance and where better to enjoy some rays than in one of Brussels’ array of summer ‘guinguettes’?

The name guinguette refers to a popular cabaret restaurant that developed at the end of the 19th century in the Paris region. Often located on river banks, they were a place to relax and have fun. Brussels does not enjoy a river, but it does boast a selection of stunning parks – and this is where its Barc family of guinguettes – or summer bars – have made their home.

The new kid on the block – Bar Vincent in Evere’s Parc Bon Pasteur, has opened already, offering the Barc range of home-made, home-cooked eco-friendly food, drinks and pastries (the pasteis de nata from Brussels stalwart Forcado Pastelaria, Saint-Gilles, are amazing). With the emphasis on local produce, think Kombucha ‘living tea’ not Coca Cola, and hummus and chickpea wraps rather than cheese and ham baguettes, more substantial fare is also available.

This weekend (from 29 April), it is the turn of guinguettes Fabiola (Parc Roi Baudouin, Jette), André (Parc de Laeken) and Henri (Parc Georges Henri, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert). Then on 6 May, Maurice (Parc du Cinquantenaire, pictured ) will roll down its shutters, followed on 17 June by a special ‘vélo-guinguette’ (café on wheels) at Ixelles’ Abbaye de la Cambre. Finally, in an especially bucolic setting at Forest’s Parc Duden, on 1 July, Guinguette Emile joins the band. 

And it’s not just refreshments and hearty snacks, expect a whole programme of activities from art to yoga. Maurice for example, the ‘big boss’ of the pack, will host Lindy Hop, salsa, street theatre and ‘boules’ competitions this year.

All these happy places can be enjoyed from 10.00 to 22.00, with food available from midday. They are open daily, rain or shine, until 24 September.

Sky high sipping

If the great outdoors is not for you, more sheltered spots to take in the sunset and a cocktail are the stylish rooftop terraces in some of Brussels’ most beautiful hotels, among others.

Although it doesn’t open until 2 May,  Soko Rooftop  bar ( pictured ) overlooking the Sonian forest is so popular, it’s recommended that you reserve a spot now on its spacious terrace. Returning for its second season, this address on the 11th floor of the Crossroads Building at the Tervuren Four Arms crossroad offers an unbeatable view of the capital’s skyline and surrounding ancient woodland. It’s open from 17.00-1.00 until 30 September.

An eagerly awaited newcomer is Bar Tope (meaning, appropriately, ‘summit’ in Spanish) at the Hoxton, opening on 22 May in the Tour Victoria (the former home of IBM) behind the Botanique, with a panoramic view of the city. Open inside every day and year round from 17.00 to 1.00 (from 11.00 to 2.00 Saturday and Sunday), Tope’s terrace area will remain open until September.

In the EU quarter, one hot address is The Roof , situated, unsurprisingly, on the Sofitel Brussels Europe hotel’s roof in Place Jourdan. This is also an enticing place to be due to the creative cuisine of TV celebrity ‘JeanPhi’ - Jean-Philippe Watteyne’s gastronomic ‘The 140’ brasserie. If you visit Friday or Saturday night, you will be rewarded with a live DJ to liven up your drinks.

Another top quality rooftop bar is the beautifully designed Jam Hotel. With a bijou swimming pool and fabulous views,  Perché rooftop  ( pictured ) offers signature cocktails like the rum-based Dark n’ Perché and Thym Sour, as well as finger food and fondue bowls for sharing. It’s open daily from 17.00   in Chaussée de Charleroi .

A sky-high favourite is the five-star Warwick Brussels’ Secret Rooftop Bar in Rue Duquesnoy, where you can enjoy a drink or food with a premium view of the Grand Place. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday, 17.00-23.00 (last entry 22.00).

Last but not least, from summer 2024 (in a best case scenario), city revelers will be able to sip champagne by an eye-watering infinity pool at the stunningly luxurious Cardo Hotel in Avenue du Boulevard, Saint-Josse.

Another newcomer to Brussels, the Rooftop 58 promises to be one of the most beautiful roof terraces in the city. Rooftop 58 is located on the 8th floor of the ‘BruCity’, the new administrative complex of the city of Brussels. Many Brussels’ inhabitants are familiar with these views as the ‘Brucity’ sits at the site of the former Parking 58. The new rooftop was initially opened to civil servants occupying the building, but because of the summer weather in Brussels it opened to the wider public sooner than planned, which we enthusiastically applaud.

Rooftop by The 1040 at Sofitel Brussels Europe hotel

At the top of the Sofitel Brussels Europe hotel on Place Jourdan there is the Rooftop by The 1040. Renovated for this season, the rooftop offers modern chic atmosphere with nice views over this part of the EU quarter. After a busy day at work, you can enjoy a selection of refreshing cocktails and small dishes to share.

Perché at JAM hotel

Perché, the rooftop of the JAM hotel, is already well known to Brussels inhabitants. It was one of the first modern rooftops in the city and it serves as the reference to summer in Brussels. Visit this spot for the unique city views and a cocktail or two, while sitting next to the refreshing swimming pool.

Rooftop at Beursschouwburg  

If you want to immerse yourself in a more artistic and cultural place, you should definitely visit the terrace of the Beurscchouwburg . It’s not a classical rooftop but it has amazing views above Brussels and that is a reason enough to include it in our list.

Royal Library Café – Albert  

Have you been to the monumental royal library building in Brussels, which is popularly called ‘L’Albertine’? The Albert restaurant on the 5th floor serves tasty local treats and offers one of the best views of Brussels. Remember that the opening hours are aligned with those of the Royal Library.

BOZAR rooftop terrace

Brussels’ Centre for Fine Arts, Bozar reopened its rooftop terrace with an added programme of urban initiatives transforming the space into “an animated public square”. The 2023-2024 season is called On Top of That and offers all kinds of urban initiatives will take their place on the roof with a committed programme on the theme of urbanisation and the use of public space.

WIELS Museum

This is one of the spots that we really like! Located on top of the Wiels museum, this is not a rooftop bar nor a restaurant (but you can bring your own drinks), it is simply a lovely terrace for reflection and relaxation for all those visitors who want to observe Brussels from a unique viewpoint. The access is free – open from Tuesday to Sunday (11:00 – 18:00).

Soko Rooftop

This has been long on our list – Soko is located on the top of a lone-standing building on the Ring of Brussels. There’s forest surrounding it as long as the eye can see. Don’t loose hope seeing that their reservation system is full: one can pass by without reservation between 5-7PM as well as after 10PM. Easily accessible with the scenic Tram 44 from Montgomery. Their Spicy Frozen Margarita cocktail is a MUST try!

La Villa in the Sky

This spot is not a classical rooftop bar but rather a restaurant, located at a height of 120 meters on the roof of the IT tower in Avenue Louise. It is a home to one of the hotspots of Brussels gastronomy (Michelin Guide, chef Alexandre Dionisio) and offers a different perspective of the Brussels skyline paired with fine dining. Open from Tuesday to Saturday (19:30 – 21:30). Also open in the afternoon from Wednesday to Friday.

Restaurant at the Musical Instruments Museum (MIM)

*This venue is temporarily closed until further notice. The restaurant of the Museum of Musical Instruments (MIM) is located on the top floor of this magnificent Art Nouveau building. However, it is currently closed due to renovations.

Perché Rooftop Bar

Perché Rooftop Bar, located atop the trendy Jam Hotel in Saint-Gilles, Brussels, is a year-round rooftop destination with an industrial-chic vibe. Offering panoramic views of the city, it boasts an indoor fireplace, an outdoor swimming pool, and a creatively decorated terrace with a welcoming atmosphere. This unique multi-level rooftop serves a range of signature cocktails, hot and cold drinks, spritzers, sparkling wine, bottled beer, and a small selection of shareable snacks. Soko Rooftop

Soko Rooftop, perched on the 11th floor at Quatre Bras de Tervuren, on the border of Brussels, quickly became a sought-after destination since its summer 2021 launch. The key attraction is its spectacular view over the lush Sonian Forest, offering a serene escape from the city. The rooftop is nestled in greenery, away from the urban bustle, making it an elevated Brussels hotspot.

Aside from breathtaking panoramics, Soko Rooftop offers crafted cocktails, refreshing aperitifs, a selection of beers and wines, and tasty fusion bites, including bao buns and skewers. The Hoxton Brussels, the first Belgian location for the London-based hotel group, opened in May 2023. It has taken up residence in the iconic former European headquarters of IBM, the renowned Victoria Tower, a formidable brutalist structure that stands 76 meters tall in the Botanique district. On a visité et adoré le nouveau rooftop du Bedford Hotel, rue du Midi, sobrement intitulé The Eight.

Ouvert en mars 2022, The Eight est le nouveau rooftop branché avec vue panoramique , accessible au 8ème étage du somptueux Bedford Hotel , rue du Midi à Bruxelles. On a visité cet endroit qui dispose de tous les éléments pour devenir l’adresse immanquable de cet été à Bruxelles.

Ancien appartement et salle de conférence reconvertis en immense rooftop, The Eight est avant tout une histoire de famille : Guerric, son gérant, nous explique que sa soeur fut aux commandes de la décoration. Et le résultat est convivial, doux et accueillant ; canapés moelleux, fauteuils bicolores, plafonniers d’osier, plantes à tous les étages, tables de bois, guirlandes de lumières, briques apparentes, palmiers, néon aux lettres de la maison : tout a été pensé pour recréer dans cette jolie jungle urbaine une vraie ambiance de famille , où l’on aime venir accompagné afin d’observer la vue sur la ville.

Car la véritable star de The Eight , c’est son incroyable vue à 180 degrés sur la rue du Midi, depuis les hauteurs du Palais de Justice jusqu’à la tour de la Grand-Place . Chiffre porte-bonheur pour la famille, le « 8 » (The Eight) fait également référence à l’infini, nous explique Guerric. Il règne en effet chez The Eight une sensation de déconnexion atemporelle depuis le monde, comme une parenthèse en aparté du tumulte citadin. En famille, entre amis ou collègues, on aime s’y poser au gré d’une bière locale ou d’un cocktail création.

À la carte justement, nous retrouvons une sélection de cocktails signature créés par le lieu (ainsi que des recettes plus classiques et traditionnelles) avec la possibilité de demander au barman un cocktail personnalisé. On adore ! Côté bières , les propositions se veulent évolutives ; à l’inverse d’autres cartes impersonnelles, Guerric nous explique vouloir redonner grâce à The Eight le pouvoir et la représentation aux particuliers belges, pour proposer avant tout « ce que l’on aime » afin de « développer le réseau de brasseries locales ». On y trouvera des marques comme BBP et Brasserie du Borinage par exemple. Un petit creux ? Des tapas (nachos, croquettes jambon/crevettes, charcuterie, calamars) accompagnent la carte.

Vous l’aurez compris : on a adoré The Eight , et on vous recommande vivement de vous faire votre propre avis en venant vous émerveiller de sa vue panoramique, tous les jours de 16h30 à 00h00 (01h du jeudi au samedi).

Victoria is a landmark building constructed between 1974 and 1978 as the Belgian headquarters of IBM in the Northern Quarter of Brussels. The emblematic architecture related to the IBM identity is assumed as an archetypical value and therefore serves as the starting point for future development. The refurbishment aspires to transform the existing structure into a hybrid, fossil-free, low-energy building and maximizes the reuse of building materials. As such, the concrete and steel structure is considered as a permanent heritage for future change. Imperfections and the roughness of the concrete structures are kept visible, even in the corporate office spaces.

The building embeds itself in the adjacent residential area by offering specific spatial amenities like a piano nobile, a canopy and outdoor terraces. The interaction with the public space is enhanced by opening up the ground floor towards the square, accessing three entrance lobbies, a bar and the co-working spaces. Embracing visitors, office workers, hotel guests underneath the canopy, the square acts as the ground-floor lobby. The interior fitting of the entrance floor is open to enhance relations and interaction between different users with different purposes. Although privately managed, this intersection of users contributes to the shared public value of the ground-floor space.

Activating the façade, large spaces such as the piano nobile situated above the entrance and other atrium spaces serve as spatial focal areas that provide specific services. These oversized spaces support a wider range of uses such as the informal working and lounge area for the co-working, the main congress room or the hotel lounge. The scale of these spaces can absorb change in the event of future redesigns. The generous free floor height of 2.80 m brings a specific spatial quality that aims for a long-term affinity with users and tenants. The outdoor terraces are small but precious pocket gardens that extend the interior space with yet another type of meeting and working space. The adjacent botanical garden ecologically benefits from the added green species.

The new façade is conditioned by the ambition to allow multiple possible uses at once. On a technical level, it answers to different building conditions and functions. If required, opening window modules can be installed without much effort. Victoria will be a multifunctional building hosting offices, a co-working space, a hotel and a restaurant. Moreover, over time, the new façade will make it possible to organize a different composition of the building programme, bringing extra value to adaptability, longevity, economic and ecologic resources.

Opening of Victoria Tower marks start of Northern Quarter's transformation

After two years of construction work, the former IBM Tower in Brussels' Northern Quarter re-opened on Wednesday under a new name.

The building has a wide range of new functions, hailing the start of what authorities hope to be a new era for the neighbourhood.

The emblematic building in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode has officially opened as the Victoria Tower.

The 22-story building, first opened in 1978 to serve as the Belgian headquarters of the American multinational IBM, will now house the new headquarters of the WPP media group, the first branch of The Hoxton hotel chain in Belgium offering 198 rooms, workspaces, two restaurants, and a rooftop bar.

"The opening of the hotel and the dynamism of the teams are a real asset for the municipality of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode," Emir Kir, the municipality's mayor, said. The hotel already opened its doors on 22 May, and its rooftop with views of the city is already proving popular with Brussels residents.

Kir explained that, by collaborating with the hotel and the Mission Locale de Saint-Josse, it is "actively supporting the hotel industry, which creates many jobs."

"This collaboration testifies to a common drive to ensure the prosperity and development of our citizens by contributing to the quality of life and attractiveness of the northern district that the municipality has been pursuing in recent years."

Gentrification or revitalisation?

The opening of the tower is in line with a wider redevelopment of the area. It is hoped the creation of a hotel and offices here will ensure "social control," which would help meet the need for security, a central issue in the currently monofunctional Northern Quarter, Kir explained.

The area is architecturally seen as an urban tragedy – one of the most prominent victims of 1960s Brusselization , as part of efforts to transform it into a business district, much of which is derelict today.

A campaign will soon be launched to improve its reputation and make the area "hip" again.

"The district is going to become a mixed neighbourhood with a lot more housing, a tram, more connectivity, greenery and cultural activities," Pascal Smet (Vooruit), Brussels Secretary of State for Town Planning, said, adding that the transformation of the Victoria Tower into a place where people will both work and relax already fits perfectly into this strategy.

Kir stressed, meanwhile, that the revitalisation of the Northern Quarter cannot be achieved without taking into account the residents and their living environment, but that it is also not possible by concentrating low incomes in the same district. "There has to be a balance, what we call social diversity, and I think we can achieve it with ambitious projects like this, which will attract other types of population."

(Re)writing history

The refurbishment of the new tower, led by Brussels-based architectural firm 51N4E, transforms it into a hybrid, fossil-free, low-energy construction. It is built on its original structure to retain its main features and appearance, "giving continuity to the building" by offering it a second life.

Locally sourced building materials were used, while the bureau claims the building does not use fossil fuels, instead relying on power produced by the newly-installed solar panels, resulting in the new tower receiving the 'Excellent in use' certification from BREEAM, which is the world's leading science-based certification system for sustainably built environments .
