Thanks to These 8 Pieces, You Will Always Travel in Style

Whether you're getting a bus, plane, train or boat, it can be difficult to look stylish when you're travelling, thanks to a lack of sleep, crumpled clothes and the many things you have to lug about with you. The key to travelling in style is to keep it simple and opt for classics that are primarily practical but will also make you look smart and put together at the same time. First things first, it pays to think carefully about your luggage and handbags  and invest in quality pieces you can rely on every time you travel.

As for clothing, stick to simple classics that will work in different climates and are comfortable and relaxed. Accessories are where you can add a little personality, whether that's via a pair of cat-eye sunglasses like Eva Chen's or a splash of colour. Keep scrolling to shop the eight pieces that will ensure that you always travel in style.

1. A Smart Suitcase

Away + The Carry On

This suitcase is smart in both meanings of the word—it look polished, but it also charges your phone so you don't have to scramble for a plug (meaning you'll never be without your e-ticket). We've all been there.

2. Smart Loafers

Gucci + Princetown Leather Slipper

Classic loafers can be just as comfortable as a pair of trainers, but they'll look smarter and go with anything you wear to travel in.

3. A Hold-Everything Wallet

Mulberry + Darley Small Classic Grain Leather Medium Wallet

Rather than keeping your important papers in a plastic wallet, hold it all in one place in a travel wallet. I use this Mulberry one whenever I fly.

4. A Blazer

Isabel Marant Etoile + Laney Pinstriped Linen Blazer

Throw a blazer over a T-shirt and leggings and you instantly look so much more put together and stylish—opt for a lightweight fabric, which will work when you arrive in hotter destinations, too.

5. Tote Bag

Sezane + Gaby Bag

Instead of carrying lots of small plastic bags onto the plane, take a large tote on board with you—the Sézane Gaby is what I always use for travelling, and it's big enough for a change of clothes for the plane, too.

6. A Cosy Cashmere Jumper

Autumn Cashmere + Cashmere Sweater

A cosy extra layer is an in-flight essential. Two words: air con.

7. Simple T-shirt (with a spare)

Topman + Assorted Colour Slim Fit T-Shirt 7 Pack

I always travel in a blazer and a white T-shirt—but take a spare one in my handbag so I can feel refreshed when I land.

8. Statement Sunglasses

Adam Selman x Le Specs + The Last Lolita Cat-Eye Sunglasses

A statement pair of sunglasses instantly adds extra attitude to your look when you exit baggage reclaim. ■

How to Travel in Style: 7 Things You must Follow

How to travel in style.

Everything you need in order to holiday in style.

1. A cool pair of sneakers

A pair of new sneakers is an absolute must-have for any journey. Team them with anything for a comfy and casual, yet oh-so cool touch to any outfit. Air-plane travel isn’t renowned for being luxurious, so keep your feet happy and relaxed in a pair of understated sneakers. There are plenty of styles and brands out there so you’re bound to find something that matches your taste.

2. A good bag

There’s a lot to stuff to carry around with you when you’re around, from money, cameras and passports, to insect repellent and sunscreen. You’ll need something that’s fashionable, but also durable. A backpack is usually better than a sports bag or hold-all, for the simple reason that it can be strung over the shoulder and carried easily, leaving your hands free to explore. The best backpacks have plenty of compartments to deter pick-pockets (it’s a horrible but inescapable fact that tourists are candy for pick-pockets).

3. The right clothes

In hot countries, there’s nothing worse than being overdressed and uncomfortable. The ideal holiday outfits typically consist of shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops, but there are occasions where something a little more substantial is required. Joggers, although relatively informal and casual, can still be smart, and are ideal for travelling on planes. Be cool and sophisticated on tours and expeditions with a sporty pair of joggers and your favourite sneakers. Also, a tip that needs to be articulated! Make sure you get yourself a set of good quality mens underwear online . They’ll make your journey much more comfortable!

A baseball cap is always a cool choice when travelling. As well as serving a very obvious fashion function, hats are also a good way to deter the ill-effects of the sun. Heat-stroke can be devastating for holidaymakers, causing fevers, migraines and dehydration and often landing unsuspecting tourists in hospital.

Sandals might be the most fashion savvy footwear, but they’re essential when abroad. Wear them around the pool or on the beach to let your feet breathe in the hot sun. Buying sandals with a supportive sole means you can also wear them when you’re out and about without having to worry about your feet hurting.

6. Sunglasses

Every tourist needs a trendy pair of sunglasses to complete that typical, standard holiday-maker look. Nowadays, sunglasses are designed to offer protection against harmful UV sun rays, and leave your retinas free from the risk of sun damage. Take advantage of the duty free and invest in a pair of killer designer sunglasses – or go for something a little bit cheaper and shop online before you go. There are plenty of pairs of quality sunglasses available without the designer price-tag, meaning their disappearance will be a little easier to stomach when they undoubtedly get lost on your travels!

7. Cheap accessories

That designer watch you have? Leave it at home. As with sunglasses, it’s highly likely that you will lose your accessories during your travels, either during an excursion or as a result of being too hot and taking them off. Buying an inexpensive watch before you fly and leaving your sentimental accessories at home will save you the worry of losing valuable items – and also make you less of a target when walking out and about.

How to Travel in Style

Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life traveling with Calpak spinner

Next year we’re heading to Connecticut for my husband’s 50th Prep school reunion, which will be a hoot! We’re also scheduling a sunny getaway in Loreto Bay to visit with my brother – I don’t see him nearly enough since we sold our vacation home on Vancouver Island. We’re also organizing a River Boat cruise to celebrate our 41 st anniversary.

traveling with a tote and rolling spinner

My daughter used a fabulous little suitcase from Nordstrom on our trip. It wheeled easily, held a lot and was cute to boot. So when Nordstrom asked me to share how I traveled in style, I zeroed right in on the one my daughter had.

We began the year in Italy in beautiful Orvieto at Umbria Jazz Winter, and now are in Malta, a first for us. Breathtaking views across the harbor from our 6th floor apartment! The year ahead holds delights in Provence, Venice, and the Amalfi Coast to begin with…we’ll be up in the air a lot, as usual! Happy 2019 to all!

We loved Malta. It’s such an exotic looking harbor to enter by boat. Happy New Year Anne!

Nice looking warn weather outfit. You can add a scarf at your departing airport and ditch it when you step off the plan in your warm location. The denim jacket is heavy but since you wear it it’s not taking up suitcase space, and paired with black pants it looks nice.

I love your well put together travel outfit.

I don’t comment often but I do read every post, and you are an inspiration as I really relate to your style. That case looks great, but like someone else said be careful of where you are travelling. Most european airlines and definitely all australian airlines have much stricter and smaller carry on limits than US airlines.

Thanks for being here Janey. I’m getting a little nervous about the size of this bag do may buy a smaller one to go to Europe.

Love the look. It is just my style. You will love the river cruise. We have travelled the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel on Avalon waterways. They were wonderful. We hoped to do the Danube last spring but an unexpected health scare came up and we had to cancel. Fortunately all was well so I hope to cruise again -perhaps the Danube or in France. Please post your plans.

Glad the health scare has resolved. We are so excited to go. I will definitely post all about it.

I used to use Ziplock bags and they work, but it was hard to get all the air out and there was no over stuffing something in them or they wouldn’t stay closed. I love packing cubes now! I recently watched several Utube videos on rolling garments and putting them in bags and gave it a try. You really can put quite a bit in them that way, and things weren’t as wrinkled as I thought they would be. I packed for a 10 day road trip, rolled all my long sleeve tops and they fit in one bag. I could easily see what was there without having to go through the stack. Same with undies and socks. I also use bags the newspaper comes in if it’s raining and Subway sandwich bags for shoes.

We did a river cruise several years ago and it was quite nice, however we prefer a small cruise ship, less them 700 passengers. They can go into ports and some rivers the big ships can’t go to and the food and service was outstanding. In fact, on the 2nd cruise we took on the same ship 2 years later, several of the crew still remembered us and we are rather reserved folks. My hubby was greeted at the pool bar, “Ah, Mr. Danny! Gin and Tonic?” We were flabbergasted and have continued to cruise with this line because they are so welcoming.

That sounds wonderful Susan. What cruise line did you use? We would prefer a small ship too.

The cruise line is Azamara. We’ve been on all 3 of their ships and enjoyed each one. You can usually find specials through Costco or AAA or contact them directly. They’re running a 2nd person 1/2 price at the moment. We’ve booked a Northern Capitals cruise in late August. Can’t wait!!

Awesome. Thanks Susan. We will check it out.

Cute look! Interesting suitcase. Thanks and have fun. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!!

I look forward to hearing all about your travels this year! Which river do you plan to cruise. We did a 3 day cruise on the Yangtze River in China a few years ago and absolutely loved it. We’re thinking about a river cruise in Europe, possibly in May. I have an older suitcase that I only use for car travel now and a newer one for flights. I was afraid the old one wouldn’t stand up to baggage handlers anymore!

We are thinking of the Danube but I am concerned about the water levels. I don’t want to end up being bused around so it’s still in the planning stages. The Yangtze sounds wonderful.

We cruised the Danube in late June-early July this year and absolutely loved it. That’s probably the last time frame I would plan a river cruise, though, as our captain was starting to get concerned about water levels.

That’s so helpful Dorothy. Thank you very much. We will check the earlier dates.

Jennifer, take the Danube Cruise! We went last spring and it was wonderful! We have no complaints, only many happy memories. Cruise in the SPRING when the water levels are high and you will avoid the many hassles and disappointments of low water – busing and hotels. We went the last week of May and it was perfect! We unpacked and called it home! The River Cruise ships are smaller, so you get much better service than on the huge ocean going ships. We went with Scenic, through a recommendation of a friend.

Thanks for the recommendation Joanna. I’ll look into Scenic! Xo

How funny–and how different are our tastes! I like the jacket. It adds just the right amount of casual and just enough color to break up the black and white. In short, I think it finishes the outfit without making it look too “outfit-y”–if that makes sense (I don’t like outfits that look as if all the pieces had been bought together).

Variety. The spice of life–in fashion as in everything!

Thanks. Renee. Variety is what makes fashion fun and so personal.

I travel rather a lot. I have been using packing cubes for about 20 years. I wouldn’t go anywhere without them. They are good for squishing things into smaller spaces, and they are perfect for keeping stuff sorted. I learned how useful they can be in September of 2001 when the planes stopped flying and we got stuck in Ohio for a week. We were on the second flight out of the Columbus airport after the air ban was lifted, and every little thing in our bags was taken out and inspected before we could board the plane. Having all the things organized in little cubes made the inspector’s job easier. He did the unpacking and repacking in front of me, and he commented that the cubes made things easier for him. (We weren’t planning on going to Las Vegas, but those were the first planes out, and it got us closer to California. Vegas doesn’t shut down for long for any reason.)

Thanks, Kay. Another vote for the cubes so I will try them. You’re right, Vegas never shuts down for long:)

We live in NZ and are heading to Europe next year for 6 weeks. Love the simplicity of your travel outfit and your stylish travel bag. However carry on allowance must be far bigger in the States. That’s “check in” size here and for many parts of the world. I too use the packing cubes when I travel. They work. Highly recommend. Enjoy your holidays.

How exciting! 6 weeks in Europe sounds awesome. Yes they seem to allow bigger bags on board here but probably not for long.

Sorry to say that I did not like your travel outfit – the jacket. Did not find it – travelling in style. Comfortable – definitely yes. Would prefer a different jacket for the outfit.

Do always enjoy your tips. Luggage – so many people now are taking carry ons that one hopes to be getting on at the beginning so one is not asked to check their bag. We always put our clothes in zip lock bags etc – so clothes are easy to find and stay tidy. This was my husband’s idea.

Happy New Year to You – will enjoy looking forward to your future posts.

Happy New Year Rose!!

I will anxiously await your thoughts on your new carry-on when you return from your trip. We are planning a trip to Hawaii in January of 2020. We have not been a long trip in a very long time, so I have to think about new luggage. For now, I love that chunky silver bracelet on your wrist. Is it still available somewhere? Enjoy your trip.

Thanks, Susan. I’ve had this bracelet over 20 years but this one seems very similar https://shopstyle.it/l/XyLI

I love the packing cubes if I am going to be living out of a tote or suitcase for several days. I pack a complete outfit in each cube, including socks, and undergarments. My PJs are in their own bag. When I get ready for bed the dirty clothes go in the PJ bag. The next morning the PJs go into the empty bag from the new outfit. My tote or suitcase stays neat and I don’t wind up pulling everything out to find what I need. Now, if we are staying in a hotel where I can unpack, then the cubes aren’t nearly as important. I do like to unpack my clothes into the closet and drawers. But, my travel doesn’t usually give me that option; so the cubes are a wonderful option for keeping my bag organized. Nordstroms was a favorite place to shop when we were in the Pacific Northwest, but we don’t have Nordstroms where I live now. Love your new bag. I do love that color. The Nordstrom cubes look awesome, too.

Excellent point about the sort of moving around the trip will entail. Japan was a different city every day with tons of trains to get there. Cruises are easy peasy. Pack and unpack once. I love your system with the packing cubes.

We travel quite a bit, and I pack very differently based on our plans. If we will remain in one place long enough to unpack/put things in drawers, etc., then the cubes work well. If we’re going from hotel to hotel every few days, then I’ve found I *love* this gizmo. It fits in my carry-on, it hangs easily in a closet or over a door, it shows you exactly what’s clean, and it eliminates the need to pack and unpack. Brilliant! (I found I didn’t use the large bag at the bottom, so I lopped it off.)

https://smile.amazon.com/RISE-Portable-Shelving-Luggage-Insert/dp/B074SGWQL4/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1546191657&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=packing+shelves+for+travel&psc=1

And unless our travel involves fancy-schmancy events (rarely!) or skiing, we can easily travel for four weeks with just a carry-on and a large tote. This reduces the stress of travel so much: faster through the airport, no worries about bags making a connecting flight, no lost bags. (A friend went on safari in Tanzania, immediately leaving the Dar Es Salaam airport by small charter plane that dropped her in the bush. Her checked bag traveled on to Amsterdam and never caught up with her. That was enough to convince my husband to downsize to carry-on only.)

The key to traveling this way is wardrobe planning: make sure every top goes with every bottom; wear your bulkiest shoes/jacket/whatever as you travel; select easy-to-wash, no-iron items. I find that 3-4 bottoms, 8-10 tops, and 2-3 cardigans/jackets are a good core.

Your friend’s experience is my worst nightmare! I haven’t check a bag for many years and don’t want to start now. Which carry-ons do you have?

Go for the cubes! Like you, Jennifer, I’m an excellent packer (my family nickname is “Packing Queen,” or just “PQ” for short), so the benefit isn’t that I can get more into my suitcase. It’s how organized I am once I arrive! No more rifling through the suitcase to find something. You can take the cubes out, stack them in a drawer or on a shelf, and repack in seconds. After watching me for several trips, I’ve even converted my husband — and that’s saying a lot!

That’s a benefit I hadn’t considered. Thanks Susan

Is it just me or are carry ons getting bigger? I think with the added cost of checking luggage and the possibility of lost, it is driving many to only pack the one suitcase. And, that piece has gotten bigger to accommodate all their pieces. I just got back from a trip east to visit family and on both legs, due to full flights, they asked people to come forward and check their carry on for free. I don’t like the added cost either but prefer to check my bag, regardless of size, so I don’t have to drag it around nor guard it all day when making connecting flights. I love the colour of your suitcase. Would you update us on how it weathers the harsh treatment of travel? I was afraid they might crack or dent. I would love to change my luggage for pretty.

Carry-ons are getting bigger but airlines, even here, are cracking down. I hate to check my bag because I’ve had them get lost several times and that really is a pain. I agree it makes travel easier when you check them but I hate to.

I hear you on lost luggage. When we lived in Colorado Springs, my husband travelled often to Ottawa. Many times his suitcase didn’t follow him. Not having your uniform for meeting is less than optimal. He hated going through Chicago for just that reason. I always divide our clothes between two suitcase, knowing one will arrive and carry a tote with necessities (meds, undies and a change of top). Crossing my fingers any lost suitcase has not taken more than two days to show.

That’s smart to split things up but really, why are the losing so many? Everything is tagged.

Could you do a post on how you folded your clothes and kept things neat? I am going to Europe for 10 days in June and am concerned on how to pack my suitcase.

I’ve written a bit about my packing here . I will try to do another before you go. I basically layer and lap to prevent wrinkles and folds.

I had the cubes for a while and really didn’t like them. I hope you have a better experience.

Regarding the carry-on size suitcase…in the U.S., everything IS bigger! My daughter has a carry-on that is fine to take on U.S. flights. But she wasn’t able to carry it on a flight from France to Germany as it was too big and she had to check it. Made her nervous because they lost her luggage when she arrived in France and she was without her things for 3 1/2 days. When she had to check the bag on her France-to-Germany trip, her luggage was again lost for 2 days!

Oh no! What size was that bag Barb??

Internaitional carryons in Europe are smaller-like 19 inches and have very strict weight limits too. Check with your airline, but you will not be able to check most US carryon bags when flying country.to country in Europe. Always take a purse size tote with some essentials and any meds, glasses, etc. it’s much different there, i have flown in Spain, Italy, France, and all have smaller carryon rules. Does not matter if you are flying as a partner with an American airline.

Thanks, Susan. My old carry on is 18″ and has never been turned down for carry-on. I always have a personal item with all toiletries, meds and 2 changes of clothes. I will have to google around for measurements.

Read your posts all the time but this is the first time making a comment. Buy the cubes. They are life changing travel need. I too was why pack a cube to pack a suitcase but they make traveling so easy. And believe it or not you can get more in your suitcase using them. I will never leave home without them again.

I’m glad you decided to comment. You’ve convinced me. I’ll order the cubes. Thanks Sharon.

Happy new year Jennifer! Sounds like some fun trips in 2019. I also replaced my luggage this year with some excellent spinner suitcases and a small bag I used as a carry on (fit under my seat) when I went to Italy for 2 weeks. I also purchased and used packing cubes and really liked how everything was easy to find and my suitcase stayed neat. I didn’t need to rummage around when getting dressed. I was amazed how much fit! I could see you with those lovely cubes that match your new bag. Enjoy the planning, the anticipation is part of the fun!

Anticipation is sweet. I’m very curious about those cubes. I may have to get them. Happy New Year Deanne

Deanne, where did you buy your cubes? Thanks!

I ordered a set of 6 from Biaggi, I2 each small, medium and large and they held up fine for my 2 weeks. I think I saw a Facebook offer that threw in a free fold up backpack, which I took on my trip for possible overflow packing.

My sister and I did a Viking cruise out of Bordeaux, France (where our ancestors lived) through Wine Country. It was fantastic. We’ve learned since that you have to be careful what time of year you travel bc of water levels on the rivers. We went in April, plenty of water from the snow melt, and perfect weather. I have friends who did the German cruise this past August. There was no water and the boat never moved. They had to get on a bus at 6 am for tours and didn’t get back until 8 or 9 at night, totally exhausted. Half the fun for us was cruising down the river, drinking wine and taking in the scenery. Go to rivercruiseradvisor.com and click on water levels for an excellent read. Love your new suitcase!

Thank you so much for this site. I did know water levels are tricky and I’d hate to have to do what your friend did. This suitcase is such a delight compared to my old clunker:)

I second this recommendation to check water levels. This past October my MIL went to Europe for a river cruise and the water levels were too low for the ship to go. She had to do a lot of touring around on a bus and hated it. Enjoy all your vacations this year Jennifer!

Thanks Kim! We’re looking forward to them.

I love the silver bag; details please! I am always concerned about having a bag that zips when traveling.

It’s a tote I got at Nordstrom several Years ago that not available right now but they bring it back every season in multiple colors.

Traveling in Style Without Breaking the Bank

It’s easy to underestimate the importance of looking good when traveling. We always want to prioritize comfort, but having a put-together wardrobe can elevate your trip in surprising ways.

Many people think you must spend a lot to look stylish, but the opposite is true. You can look effortlessly stylish without breaking the bank on your travels.

This guide will look at how to travel in style on a budget and why it’s important to look your best.

Why Looking Good While Traveling is Important

No matter where you go in the world, there are three key reasons why you should put effort into your appearance when traveling.

First Impressions

When meeting new people, first impressions count. Looking and feeling your best will help you carry yourself better and give a great first impression to new people.

If you’re traveling for business, this is especially important. Research shows people form opinions about how trustworthy and powerful you are based solely on your appearance.

Feeling good in your clothes also helps you interact more confidently with others. Quality, well-tailored clothes boost self-esteem, and you’ll carry yourself better in different countries.

That confidence radiates outwards and shows people you’re worth meeting and listening to. Whether you’re a keynote speaker at a conference or on holiday, this will help you stand out.

Better treatment

In many places, being smartly dressed means you get better treatment. For example, if you go into a restaurant in Paris looking disheveled, you’re not going to get great service. On the other hand, being smartly dressed means servers will pay you more attention.

How we look shouldn’t dictate the kind of treatment we get, but it does make a difference when traveling.

Travel Medical Insurance – Why You Need It

Tips for looking good without spending a lot of money

For your next trip abroad, you can take some simple steps to look good without spending a lot of money on a new wardrobe.

The more luggage you take, the more you’ll pay in airline fees. Pack as light as possible to save money on your trip. Here’s an easy hack from Torbin Lonne on how to keep your luggage light:

“Another way to reduce the amount of space your belongings take up is to invest in travel-sized toiletries and packing cubes. Travel-sized toiletries are a great way to save space, and they can be easily purchased at most drugstores,” says Torbin Lonne of DiveIn

Plan your wardrobe

When packing for a trip, most people take the number of items of clothing they need to last the duration of their travels. But that usually ends up with a bag full of clothes that don’t work together as outfits and means packing far more than you need.

When packing, think about outfits that you can put together. Once you have an outfit, take a photo and save it on your phone so you know what to wear while abroad.

For example, one versatile windbreaker jacket can be worn with various outfits, helping you save money and pack much lighter.

Create a capsule wardrobe

When planning your wardrobe, try to build a mini capsule wardrobe so it’s easy to mix and match outfits. Pick items with the same color palette and diversify the type of items you pack.

For example, two pairs of pants, a jacket, and three tops can easily make a week’s worth of outfits for your trip.

Choose affordable yet stylish clothes

The best way to look stylish on a budget is to avoid logos. Stick to simple pieces with classic cuts to look stylish.

Rather than splurging on expensive brands, opt for plain clothes that fit well to save money while traveling . Even some affordable tailoring will elevate clothes and make you look much more stylish with minimal effort.

Choose expensive-looking fabrics

When choosing clothes that look expensive, the fabric is key. Thin, coarse fabrics look cheap and will give that disheveled look you want to avoid.

Luckily, the fabric doesn’t have to be expensive to look high-end. Some great fabrics to incorporate into your travel wardrobe are:

  • Wool – great for colder climates
  • Linen – better for warm climates
  • Velvet

Forget about trends

When you’re honing your style, forget about current trends. Fads pass quickly and will make your clothes look dated within months. However, having a great personal style is classic and will always make you look put together.

Lianne Wiggins , the head of womenswear at Matches Fashion, sums it up perfectly:

“There is still an appetite for newness, so I do believe trends will continue to emerge; however, this is being countered with brilliant, timeless investment pieces that can be kept and worn for years to come.”

Buy versatile pieces

Versatility goes hand-in-hand with affordability. The more versatile your clothes, the more wear you get from them, and the less you need to buy to pad out your wardrobe.

For example, a tailored, simple t-shirt can easily be worn with shorts for a day of sightseeing and then elevated with a pair of trousers for a business meeting with a client.

Whenever you are considering buying something new for a trip abroad, ask yourself, how many outfits can I make with this item? If it doesn’t fit within your capsule wardrobe, save your money and move on.

Accessorize

Adding accessories to your wardrobe can transform outfits and help you create more outfits with fewer pieces.

Adding just one or two pieces of jewelry can instantly change an entire outfit and elevate it from day to night.

As with clothing, accessories don’t need to be expensive to look great. Aim for simple pieces that you can mix and match when traveling.

Don’t forget your beauty products

The final step of creating a stylish wardrobe for your travels is your beauty products. A good skincare routine and some makeup will complement your personal style, help you look your best, and give you confidence.

“One way to ensure that you look stylish and put-together is to bring along makeup that complements your outfit and personal style. This can help you feel more confident and self-assured when meeting new people or exploring new places,” says Sarah from A Beauty Edit .

Having a stylish, well-thought-out wardrobe is key if you’re working while traveling . You’ll make a great first impression, exude confidence, and look fantastic in your photos.

But looking great while traveling doesn’t have to break the bank. Don’t fall into the trap of splurging on a new wardrobe for your next trip. Instead, create a timeless, simple wardrobe that encapsulates your personal style.

How to travel in style?

  • November 6, 2018

What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today when human contacts go so fast. Fashion is instant language . – Miuccia Prada

i travel in style meaning

Travelling does not differ that much from normal life, we also interact with each other, we meet new people and are a part of a specific society. It is during travel when we represent not only ourselves but also the culture and the country we come from. Therefore it is important to give of ourselves what we have best. The first impression we make will impinge on how people would perceive us in the long run. And I suppose that everyone wants to be considered a well groomed, classy person that keeps up the good standards. So, if we are going to treat our journeys as just another part of our lives, why shouldn’t we look as good as on any other day?

It’s 21st century, so style does not exclude comfort. Everything is a matter of selection of a proper fabric, its breathing properties and the cut or shape.

It is my opinion that you can look awesome and stylish while travelling. Being clean and well groomed has nothing to do with the fact that we are driving through the Europe with a suitcase or visiting South-East Asia with a backpack. If you want to look well, you’ll always find a way.

Style and class consist of few elements, which are universal even on a trip. You should only take care of these few things and your looks would change. A lot.

Take care of your luggage

Luggage is like your business card. Suitcases that are dirty, cracked and worn-out to the limits do not look good and definitely have nothing in common with travelling with class. Therefore you should get a decent, robust and simply pretty suitcase. The times when “robust” and “pretty” contradicted each other are over. Today you can have both. While choosing the right suitcase you should consider few aspects. First of all – the size. Choosing the right size of your suitcase depends on where and for how long you are going to be away. If it’s only a weekend or a few days out of the city, a medium size suitcase or so-called cabin suitcase should be enough. If you are aiming for a longer stay, I would choose a large luggage.

i travel in style meaning

Another element you should focus on is the material, which the suitcase is made of. Usually the light, polycarbonate (PC) suitcases prove most useful, because they are very resistant to any shocks, cracks or scratches. Let’s not pull wool over our eyes – at the airport the luggage is thrown here and there, so if your suitcase is not really robust, you’d have to buy another one after your first flight. Or a few flights if you are lucky. Another advantage of the polycarbonate suitcases is their weight (especially important on flights as we have to deduct the weight of the suitcase from the luggage limit).

I do not recommend suitcases made of fabric, because they get dirty more quickly, they are not waterproof etc. Just to illustrate the difference – you only have to wipe the PC suitcase with a wet cloth and it looks like a brand new one.

We should additionally look for suitcases with retractable handle and wheels that rotate 360-degrees around, because it really makes moving and walking with it much easier, as we don’t have to pull it behind us (large luggage might get really bothersome after a while).

i travel in style meaning

I always choose suitcases that have a combination lock. It definitely is a useful security measure and puts a spoke in the wheel of those who would want to ransack our stuff.

The color is very important too. If you fly often, so you often give your luggage away, I would really dissuade you from buying light-colored suitcases. While travelling by car or train you can supervise where your luggage is. At airports, on the contrary, you shall expect that your luggage would be transported on a dirty conveyor belt, cart or tossed by hands in dirty gloves. In brief, after only one flight your beautiful white suitcase would look more like an example of the darkest shade of despair.

I had to replace my set of suitcases before my autumn excursions and I chose the new autumn collection of WITTCHEN . They are elegant and in stylish colors of burgundy, navy blue or bottle-green. They are very resistant to dirt and in addition they look trendy and fashionable regardless of the style I choose for my trip.

Classic bag that can replace your hand luggage

For shorter trips or weekend sallies you generally don’t need two pieces of luggage. I usually have one medium-sized registered piece of luggage. If I go somewhere in autumn or in winter, I simply cannot fit my stuff to smaller, so-called cabin, ones, because warm clothes, like sweaters, take much more space than, for example, summer dresses.

Apart from the suitcase I usually take only a handbag and usually I choose a larger and more capacious one, in which I could easily fit my: documents, vanity bag, wallet, ebook reader, bottle of water and sunglasses. Such handbag can easily become my hand luggage and it always looks good and classy. Not to mention that is also a trendy addition that completes even the simplest style. Moreover, it is easier to wander the airport with a handbag than to drag a small suitcase.

i travel in style meaning

Logistics are also important. If we are planning flights around Europe, we usually choose affordable cheap airlines, which are usually crowded. And there is always a struggle, who would jam the suitcase in the overhead bin or under a seat first. I, on the other hand, don’t worry about this, as I just put my small handbag under the seat in front of me. Problem solved.

Clean and neat look

Whether I go on a long travel or only on a short trip, I always take special care to wash my hair before, to wear clean shoes and clothes and that my nails and hands were well cared for. If make-up is a must (I often travel without a single drop of make-up) it shall be light, we don’t have to use tons of concealers or foundations or do a face contour. If we like ourselves in a make-up, let it emphasize our natural features, not hide our face, because after a few hours of sitting in an often cramped and closed space, the make-up would not look fresh. Not to mention the fact that our skin would suffer as well.  So, we should just be beautifully groomed and cared for, because this is the base for style and class. Even the longest journey is not an excuse to let ourselves go. Remember that your appearance is like your business card and you can deduce lots about a person just from it.

Choose classic clothes

Classic always proves well and there is no chance not to look stylish wearing classic clothes. While on travel I choose simple, comfortable cuts and breathable fabrics – cotton, wool and those clothes I know, that I would look good in and feel comfortable too. Usually I favor pants in dark colors, light colored tops and soft sweaters. Well, the classic combination of denim trousers and white T-shirt goes with everything. Depends on the type of the journey you can only add elegant or sport shoes and some additions like jewelry to change a simple set into a fashionable one. In autumn or winter I choose soft sweaters. If I take a coat with me, I always put it on, because it creases too much in the suitcase. If there is a luggage limit, for example when I’m flying, I put on the heaviest sweater and the heaviest shoes, like booties or jodhpur boots, so that my suitcase was lighter. I sometimes wear high heels on a business trip but always those that are comfortable! Just a small tip for the ladies travelling in high heels – on the plane I take them off and put soft socks on. It’s enough to look around during a long flight – almost no one has the shoes on, because a flight lasting many hours and altitude changes make the legs swell up, so it is better to remove your shoes for the flight.

i travel in style meaning

Perfumes – don’t overdo it, you’re not alone!

Definitely too many people put too much essence and forget that the means of transportation like planes or trains are closed spaces, so large concentration of perfumes might be bothersome for the people around. Let’s remember that we are not alone there and the key to the class is respect for others and giving it a thought if we are not troubling others with our presence. So if we overdo the perfumes or the cologne, this scent will last for hours and might be annoying for the passengers sitting next to us. Perfumes shall be used only to sweep someone sitting or standing close to us with an intriguing smell. “Less is more” proves right also in this situation. While travelling we should use a delicate body mist instead of heavy perfumes. It would be more subtle and less overwhelming for the others. Style is class and delicacy.

Think about stylish accessories

I love gadgets and stylish additions, because they make the style alive and true. During travel there are a lot of possibilities to play with interesting additions that complete the travelling stylization. Let’s begin with spectacle cases – we shall choose those made of hard materials, to protect our favourite frames. Wallet and phone cases can be trendy and complement the rest of the clothes and additions too. If you’re not travelling with a backpack, like for example to India, where lots of travelers, in fear of a theft, sew inner money pockets in, I don’t see any problems to take a nice looking wallet with you. The rule is simple: in modern world you can fall prey to a theft anywhere, regardless of your destination, so you just have to be careful, watch your documents and never leave open bags or abandon your luggage. I’ve been travelling for 15 years, I’ve visited over 75 countries and nothing was NEVER stolen from me.

My most favorite gadget for autumn trips is document and credit card case, in a beautiful dark violet color with a trendy animal design (you can find it HERE ). Such a small thing but it helps to keep order in the purse with class.

Jewellery and watch that can change the whole style

Even while travelling you can jazz up your appearance with simple additions like jewelry or classy watch. I always travel wearing earrings, I also never take off my necklace (which I wear on the daily basis) or rings. I never part with my watch as well, because time is extremely important on any trip. Controlling if I am going to be in time for another flight or train is, at least, the key aspect ;) I’ve once heard a statement that it is pointless to wear jewelry on travel but let me just ask… why? I wear jewelry every day, it’s a part of my style, expression of my personality, so why shall I take it off for the trips? Moreover, if it’s expensive or has a lot of personal value to me, it is easier and much safer to put it on me than to keep it in a pouch in the main luggage, which can, for example, go missing.

i travel in style meaning

Pocket cosmetics – moistening & refreshment

All these years of travelling to various places have taught me one thing – less is more. Moreover, versatility is the key to doing trips in a stylish way. In the old days I carried lots of needless cosmetics, which I never used during my journeys but it seemed to me that I would need them for sure. Finally, I began eliminating them piece by piece and now, regardless of the destination and the mean of transport, I always have with me a proven set of mini cosmetics, that allow me to refresh on the road quickly and look well. I have two general principles: the travel cosmetics shall refresh and moisturize. I always throw mini toothpaste and a mini toothbrush to my vanity bag – these are inarguably the most important elements, but I add also a mini face cream but I use it as a hand cream as well. In planes and coaches, when the air conditioning is on, the air is very dry, so even a little bit of cream after a long journey can work miracles. I also have a moisturizing lip balm. And on the top of that – a mini body mist or in long flights – spray thermal water. With such a beauty kit I can easily and quickly neaten myself even after a long-lasting journey.

i travel in style meaning

Stuff in order

While travelling we always take something out, then put the stuff back in the bags, show them in customs and other checks, so if we just slapdash jam our things in our bag or backpack, we will torment ourselves every time while taking them out or putting them back. And we would also annoy the inspectors and other passengers, if while looking for passport or ID card, we blocked the line for a longer while. Chaos has nothing to do with class and the best way to avoid it is good organization. The most frequently used documents – passport, ID card or credit card – are best to be kept in a special document holder. This way we will be able to reach them any time we want. Headphones and phone charger like to get tangled, so those are the next things that shall be kept in a separate case or bag. I never put cosmetics unpacked to my purse or handbag, because there is always a risk that they will spill and stain other things. I always keep them in a small bag or, when flying, in a lockable plastic bag, which is obligatory, otherwise you would not be able to carry any of your liquid cosmetics in your hand luggage on board.

What’s Your Travel Personality? What’s Your Travel Style?

Travel PERSONALITY | Travel STYLE

If you’re considering an extended multi-destination or around-the-world journey chances are you’ve got a pretty advanced sense of curiosity about the world and a strong personality to boot. The first part of deciding where you want to go on your trip is to determine your traveling “personality,” that is, how you identify yourself as a traveler, the passion behind your planning, your modus operandi if you will. To help you identify yourself (and likely travel companions ), we’ve pinpointed a few basic travel personalities – one or a few are likely to fit your profile. You can use them to establish an overarching theme for your trip, or to divide up the world into those places that have a place on your RTW route and those that you probably don’t care to include.

Travel Personalities

Adventurous travelers.

If you imagine yourself bungee jumping in New Zealand, running with the bulls in Pamplona, dancing until 6 in the morning in Berlin, heliskiing from the top of a mountain in Banff or boating down the Amazon, all signs point to you being an adventure traveler. National Geographic has a list of the top adventure tour operators and outfitters worldwide that may be worth a look. Of course, you don’t need to be a part of a tour to have an adventure, but if you’re not sure what adventure travel means or if you just want an idea of what kind of companies operate tours and which ones to use, it’s a great place to start. Recommended destinations for adventure travelers : New Zealand, Brazil, Bolivia, Nepal/Tibet, Tanzania, India.

ROMANTIC TRAVELERS

If your travel dreams are populated by the perfect sunset on a secluded beach in the Seychelles, gondola rides in Venice, and a honeymoon for the storybooks, this is probably you. Travel can be an amazing way to connect with your partner, or even meet someone new! Check out Travel and Leisure’s list of  the 50 most romantic places for a general idea of what’s out there in the way of romantic destinations. The notion of taking off to far-flung places is a romantic idea in itself, so grab your partner, your passports, and get out and see the world. Recommended spots for romantic travelers : Santorini, Venice, Paris, Buenos Aires, Goa, Bali, Phuket, Fiji, Tahiti.

INTELLECTUAL TRAVELERS

If travel is just another way you broaden your internal encyclopedia with art, culture, and history, and your dream itinerary includes days filled with museums, archeological sites, groundbreaking architecture and traditional experiences, you may be an intellectual traveler. Lucky for you, destinations all over the world cater to the student inside of all of us. The world’s full of lessons, and travel is the way to learn them. Recommended regions for intellectual travelers : Europe, India, Japan, Machu Picchu, Istanbul, Cairo.

FIRST-TIME TRAVELERS

Will this be your first time traveling internationally? A little nervous about flying overseas? Concerned that you don’t know what you don’t know? Those are all normal concerns for first-timers. Don’t worry. There are lots of places that’ll present much less of a cultural shock where you can ease yourself into the world at large. You’ll be a pro before you know it. Recommended stops for first-time travelers : London, Paris, Rome, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand.

DANGER JUNKIES

If you prefer to live on the edge and explore destinations widely considered off-the-beaten-path or even unsafe, you’re probably a danger junkie at heart. Your ideal trip includes Ghana, possible brushes with the FARC in Colombia, or meeting some Maoist rebels in Nepal. Robert Pelton is your personal idol. You’re a risk taker and enjoy finding destinations that give you the thrills you desire. Of course, we caution our travelers to read US State department warnings, as well as the warnings posted by other nations (that said, many warnings can be colored by political agendas). Recommended locales for danger junkies : Tibet, Colombia, Uganda, Papua New Guinea

ALL, A COMBINATION, OR NONE OF THE ABOVE

Most people want to include elements of every different type of travel in their around the world experience, and we certainly encourage you to do so, too. The best way to prepare for an extended journey is to be completely honest with yourself about what you want to accomplish with your RTW trip and how you want to experience the world. The truth is that most travelers don’t fit neatly into one travel personality type. Still, it’s important to think about what kind of activities and attractions appeal to your personality, not just what cities you want to visit or on what airlines you’ll be flying. Another way to narrow down the endless possibilities while making complex travel plans is to identify how you like to travel, i.e., your travel style.

5 Travel Styles .

Traveling off the beaten path.

You’re not the average tourist. You want to add more layers to your travel experience and have rich cultural experiences every step of the way. You try things that more tentative travelers might skip. Popular tourists spots are crowded for obvious reasons—history, beauty, craftsmanship—but some of the most rewarding traveling experiences happen away from such places. Some of them are as simple as a cup of tea with a local shopkeeper in Turkey, or a conversation with local university students about politics in a bar in Colombia. Sometimes the proposition of striking out on your own in a place where you don’t speak the language is daunting, but it’s all part of the travel experience, and courage, not fear, reaps the greatest rewards in new places. Suggestions on how to get off the beaten path:

  • Go somewhere that’s not in your top 10 places to see.
  • Visit a village as opposed to a city.
  • Skip your first choice of continents.
  • Make a point of interacting with locals.

While it’s not easy,  you can get away from the camera-toting masses, perhaps right in the middle of the most visited city of all. Check with your personal travel consultant for help discovering that proverbial and elusive “hidden gem”.

Traveling In Style

You need a little comfort on the road, and you’re willing to stretch your budget a little to get it. There’s no shame in wanting fancy sheets and a warm pool every once in a while. If you’re going to be traveling RTW for several months, you may not want to always (or ever) go the cheapest route. A hot shower with good water pressure and a comfortable bed are a miracle after a few months, weeks or even days of traveling. Many of our clients like to book a few splurges into their trip, even if they’re trying to keep their costs down as much as possible. If you’re looking to keep your budget on track , you might consider doing this in parts of the world where a splurge isn’t that expensive. For example, maybe during your travels through Europe, you’d stay in budget hotels and hostels, but the night you arrive in Jaipur you might hire a car to pick you up at the airport and drive you to a 5-star hotel built into an old palace. Here are a few other ways where you might spend a bit more money to have better experiences:

  • Trek the mountains in Nepal with a guide
  • Go on safari in East Africa
  • Cruise to Antarctica from Ushuaia
  • Tour the Silk Road

You might also consider upgrading your long flights: a fully reclining seat for that 10 or 20-hour flight might just be worth the investment. AirTreks can accommodate first and business class upgrades for all or part of your trip, often for a discount.

Traveling with an Agenda

You have things to do, places to be, going from place to place with an angle, an agenda on your trip. People who are working weddings, studies, volunteering, practices or business into their RTW trip fit into this travel style. For some people, traveling isn’t about aimlessly wandering the world, bouncing from tourist site to tourist site — they hit the road on a mission with a strong sense of purpose and responsibility to themselves (and others) to motivate them and help them pull it off. Of course, as an individual, this can mean any number of things — maybe your life’s dream is to climb K2 or to take a perfect honeymoon at a resort in the Maldives and fit in a visit to Venice’s Grand Canal and the Eiffel Tower in Paris Or, maybe you have a meeting in Shanghai on Monday and a meeting in Bangalore on Thursday and need to be in San Francisco, then Toronto, then back to New York after that. Perhaps you’re on a wedding tour, paying respect to friends in Phuket and family in Rome, or maybe you just got accepted to study at an ashram in India. Perhaps you’re on a wedding tour, paying respect to friends in Phuket and family in Rome, or maybe you just got accepted to study at an ashram in India. Whatever your “must do” may be, it can form the linchpin of your trip and serve as something to build the rest of your RTW trip around.

Traveling to Get Immersed

Getting in touch with a place takes a little time. You’re the type of traveler that likes to move slowly, to connect with locals in ways you just can’t on a whirlwind trip. The Peace Corps is just one way to immerse yourself in cultures around the world, long-term, slow travel is another way to stay in a place over a long period of time to experience what daily life is like. A great way to stop, recharge the batteries and get in touch with a local way of life is to rent an apartment in the city of your choice. It slows you down and allows you to connect with a city from a local’s perspective, as opposed to seeing as much as you can every day to check things off your list as a tourist. You could even get a job, do the “metro, work, bed” routine for awhile. Teaching English is a popular and easy option in many destinations if you’re a native speaker.

Responsible Travel

You make a point of dedicating your travels to the greater good. As countries around the world develop faster and faster, and as the global community starts to see its impact on the environment, more and more travelers feel that integrating some aspect of responsible travel is essential on every trip. Lonely Planet defines responsible travel as:

“Minimizing your impact and maximizing your connection with people and the environment. It’s about making a positive contribution and having the most rewarding and inspiring travel experiences of your life.”

Our ground partner Global Basecamps offers sustainable tours, treks, and accommodations all over the world. Many volunteer organizations also have conservation projects you can participate in on your travels such as tagging sea turtles, beach cleanups, and cultural preservation efforts. You can also volunteer with organizations like Global Vision International or Volunteer Abroad .

If you want to immerse yourself in local culture on a smaller scale, there are lots of ways to do it. Edward Hasbrouck recommends visiting a local English school and volunteering to be a conversation practice partner for the day.

Independent travelers can play a vital role in fostering a universal attitude of respect by helping support local communities cultures in the hard work of maintaining their cultures and environments.

Travel with style: Tips for dressing, sight-seeing and more

Stylish men on vacation

Travelling in style seems like it should be easy, yet we’ve all had at least one “vacation” that was left decidedly unstylish (and uncomfortable) by a nightmare of extra luggage fees, last-minute shopping or truly bad restaurant experiences. To ensure your next vacation is both stylish and smoothly planned, consider these tips for streamlined packing, stress-free shopping, and enjoying the local atmosphere of your destination.

The Pros and Cons of Packing a Single Bag

Travel with style carrying a single bag may seem impossible, simply based on your itinerary and the variety of activities you have laid out: a semi-formal evening dinner one day, poolside activities another, and a hiking excursion on another day. If you have a wide variety of activities on your travel list, it’s better to be honest with yourself about your packing needs and take that extra bag, rather than find yourself missing something crucial while en route and be forced to pay extra for a replacement item that you probably won’t even need once you return home. You may also assume you can find an item while at your destination and come up empty-handed, which could cripple your plans.

That said, vacationing in style doesn’t necessarily mean packing two bags; there are probably quite a few items you can do without, even with a varied itinerary. At many destinations , you can rent the gear for adventure outings instead of packing it along, from swim gear to hiking boots and parkas and more. While gear rental charges can be high, you may be able to get a discount through your hotel, and they may be preferable to the expense and hassle of lugging heavy accessories on your trip, particularly if you plan on hitting multiple destinations in a short span of time and wish to minimize your airport hassle as much as possible. Call ahead and find out if this is an option so you’ll know just what you need to pack and what can be left at home.

Vacation man 5

How to Travel with a Single Carry-on?

Taking the above into consideration, many fashionable travelers have found that vacationing in style with no more than a carry-on is a perfectly attainable goal. Your travel experience will be certainly be much more enjoyable without the hassle and expense of checked luggage. There are some things that can make packing a carry-on easier and maximize your room.

First, plan your outfits from the shoes up. It’s easy to vacation in style with some smart outfit planning; you may be able to get away with a single pair of stylish shoes (such as a smart pair of brogues or leather drivers) for the entire trip, and wearing them on the plane frees up a great deal of luggage room. If you do pack a second pair of shoes, such as a pair of fancier dress shoes for an evening meal, pack them in the bottom of the bag and fill them with accessories (ties, jewelry, a scarf) to make the most of that space.

Likewise, you may only need one sport coat for the trip, and can wear it on the plane. In cooler months, lightweight cashmere or wool scarves and cardigans can add warmth without taking up too much room in your bag. Try to color-coordinate your clothing items so they can easily be mixed and matched, and pack thin layers to adjust to fluctuations in temperature as opposed to taking bulky sweaters or coats.

Travel with Style and Comfort

Men stylish travel

Vacation days can tempt you to look just a little too casual, but vacationing in style and comfort is possible. Chinos, colored slacks and tailored shorts are all great; cargo shorts or baggy denim pants are not. In warmer months, polos, lightweight button-downs and fitted t-shirts are presentable; baggy t-shirts, tank tops and anything with a slogan should be left to the gym. In cooler months, look for chambray shirts, cardigans and scarves to add warmth without bulk.

As for shoes , a nice pair of drivers or brogues can take you through most events; a very stylish pair of luxury sneakers is a good alternative for sportier vacations, while fashionable boots are good for colder months. A linen blazer or one made of a colorful cotton/wool blend is casual enough for vacation that it won’t look like office wear, but it will still pull together an outfit and make it clear you’re not letting yourself go just because you’re on holiday. You can also use it to easily transition from daytime to nighttime: wear a tailored pair of shorts or slacks, a button-down, a fedora and drivers during the day for touring activities; slip on the blazer and lose the hat at night, and you’re ready for drinks and dancing. If your vacation leans more toward the sporty/adventure side, you might swap the sport coat for a smart-looking leather bomber.

Finally, don’t forget to pack extras like a nice belt, a good watch, and a stylish yet rugged shoulder bag for day trips. You’ll probably be using these on the plane, so they won’t even take up room in your carry-on.

Vacation man 4

How to Deal with Souvenirs?

If you plan on shopping at your destination, you have a couple of options for taking your goods home. Some shoppers opt to have purchases shipped home, while other items can simply be packed in a carry-on. It’s wise to plan ahead and consider the type of items you’ll be purchasing; if they’re very bulky or too fragile to pack well in a duffel bag, you might be better off paying to have the item properly packed and shipped home. You’ll need to check with a local postal office for shipping policies and costs, and to be sure you have the proper packing materials needed to give your item a safe ride home.

If you choose to take your purchases home on the plane, you might want to pack a duffel in one of your main bags for holding holiday souvenirs, or purchase a bag at your destination. Remember that some items may not be permissible in a carry-on bag, so you’ll have to pay a checked baggage fee for your extra items. Small items of clothing and the like can probably be easily packed with your existing luggage, and as an added bonus, you can wear them at your destination, upping your vacation style quotient with a little local flair.

Vacation man 3

Planning Your Itinerary

Some vacations are all about the thrill of discovery, and there’s no set plan for each day; you simply enjoy each morning as it arrives and plan your entertainments as you find them. While these vacations are often relaxing and enjoyable , you may find yourself missing out on fun and interesting events if you don’t plan ahead. Even if you aren’t keen on crafting a formal day-by-day plan for your trip, do check up on local entertainment listings and schedules to see what’s up for offer during your stay. Not only will you be clued in to can’t-miss events, you may also learn of closures that could affect your plans—not something you want to discover at the last minute.

With that being said, beware of over-planning . Many tourists make the mistake of zealously overstuffing their schedules, only to burn out before the end of the trip. Allot no more than one or two scheduled excursions per day, and allow yourself plenty of time in between them in case of traffic or in case you have to return to your hotel for something (a change of clothes, minor first aid, etc.). Try to leave at least one unscheduled day at the end of your trip to simply relax before you head home. This will allow you time to mentally and physically unwind before the trip home and will prevent you from feeling too harried when you return home and have to jump back into your daily routine.

Vacation man 1

Hitting the Local Scene in Style

Vacationing in style doesn’t just mean dressing well; it also means you’re enjoying the best of what the local area has to offer. Your hotel is a great starting point for scoping out the best local hotspots for food and entertainment; it can also help provide the amenities of home that you need for a more comfortable stay. For example, many hotels offer on-site gym facilities for patrons, or they may be able to score you a deal on a day pass to a local gym; ask at the front desk. They can also point you to local deals for everything from restaurants to dry cleaning; a discreetly tipped concierge is a valuable source of information on where the locals prefer to do business, and may even be able to point you to some valuable discounts while in town.

Be sure to ask: where do the local residents dine, shop and play? Whether you’re traveling at home or abroad , well-worn tourist hotspots tend to be more expensive and don’t offer the same local flavor. Asking a local insider where they like to relax can lead you to hole-in-the-wall pubs and markets off the beaten path, where you’ll get to sample local fare and have a more immersive experience than if you simply stayed in the city center. You should also check online or in local publications for art shows, live music, restaurant reviews and more that might not be widely publicized through major tourist websites or brochures.

Est-ce qu'il y a un equivalent en français? "With this travel bag, you can travel in style...." Travel in style means to travel well, with ease and comfort.... ie Flying on concorde is travelling in style... (or rather, it was...!) Voyager en style?

Micia93

according to the level of the phrase, you can say : "voyager à l'aise", "confortablement" (formal) "voyager pépère" (familiar) "voyager cool" (teenagers and young adults) there exists other forms, but they don't come up to my mind yet !

is there a double meaning to it? you can travel with ease and maybe the bag is stylish too?

if the bag is just stylish and not comfy, then you can say "voyager avec style"

"Voyager avec style" me semble parfait.

From Nigeria to Boston

When you first meet Oluwagbeminiyi Osidipe, you encounter a very vibrant, friendly, and unique personality. Oluwagbeminiyi or Niyi – as she shortened her name for simplicity – was named by her mother, who had a “very personal experience” when she had her, Niyi explained. Niyi is a Yoruba Nigerian transplant who arrived in the U.S. in 2006. As one of the most densely populated (West) African countries, Nigeria derives its name from the river that spans its land. To the South, it borders the Gulf of Guinea to the Atlantic Ocean. Originally colonized by the British, Nigeria gained independence in 1960. Its main ethnic groups are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba, who speak English and their own respective languages, while major religions include Islam, Christianity and indigenous beliefs. Niyi shares her story, her views on politics, cultural differences she’s embraced with humor, and what we can learn from each other by expressing curiosity. Her message is simple: travel enriches us through its exposure to new cultures, and enables us to grow.

Mark Twain on Travel

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” (American author Mark Twain, Innocents Abroad).

Have you had the opportunity to travel (extensively, within your country, or even once abroad)? Can you relate to Twain’s sentiments? How does travel enrich us?

Pleasing The Taste Palate

Food has the wonderful quality of uniting us no matter where we are. There is nothing partisan or narrow-minded about food. It simply invites us to indulge, create recipes, and share with others. Two of my favorite Polish dishes (included in collage) are pierogies and barszcz czerwony – a beetroot soup – served on Christmas Eve in Poland. How does food bring us together? What are some of your favorite dishes and why? Can food trigger memories?

  • And, then there’s luxury travel with all-inclusive resorts where you get pampered and you can kick back!

With Wildfires Near Athens, Here's What Travelers to Greece Should Know

Image may contain Architecture Building Temple Prayer Shrine Pillar Parthenon and Person

Dangerous wildfires near Athens, Greece forced thousands of residents to evacuate the suburbs north of the country's capital on Monday, August 12. The event was reported to be the worst blaze the Mediterranean country has seen so far this year, burning 40 square miles of land (nearly twice the size of Manhattan), killing a local factory worker, damaging 22 businesses, and leaving at least 78 homes uninhabitable, the Associated Press reports .

As of Wednesday, August 15, there are no active fires in the wider Athens region, Greece's chief fire brigade spokesperson told the BBC. However, residual flare ups still remain a risk.

The fires were first reported raging through the forests north of Athens on August 10. A weekend of consistently high temperatures and strong winds had led to a continuous escalation of the situation. It's the latest of a summer marked by extreme temperatures and earlier heatwaves in Greece . In July, wildfires also burned on the Greek islands of Kos, in the Dodecanese islands, and across Chios and Crete .

Understandably, the recent news has led travelers to wonder if they should postpone trips to Athens and elsewhere in Greece. “The air quality is not great for people with respiratory issues, but otherwise, I would see no reason to stay away from Athens right now,” Athens-based Jacoline Vinke , a Condé Nast Traveler travel specialist and trip planner at Trufflepig said Monday. "The fires are not in a touristic area; flights are not affected and there has been no personal danger for anyone. That said, it is a dramatic and frightening situation for the local people.”

Below, see answers to travelers' frequently asked questions concerning the wildfires with insight from local travel experts.

What's causing the wildfires near Athens, Greece?

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the wildfire; a faulty power cable may have started the blaze, sources told Reuters , but that has yet to be confirmed.

Gale-force winds of around 31 mph in some areas north of the Greek capital, plus several days of extreme temperatures approaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit, meant emergency services worked tirelessly to extinguish the blazes.

“The strong wind is the main problem in the affected areas,” Vinke said on Monday. “Tonight and tomorrow it will be slightly better so hopefully that will help getting the situation under control.”

The wildfire prompted evacuation orders in the suburbs north of Athens on Monday, August 12.

Is it safe to travel to Athens?

The Greek authorities have not announced a state of emergency in Athens. On August 12, the US Embassy in Greece issued a Natural Disaster Alert advising US citizens to “exercise extreme caution” in areas impacted by the wildfires.

“The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has announced Very High Fire Risk (Risk Category 4) and Extreme Fire Risk (Risk Category 5) for many areas in Greece, including areas close to Athens, which can be seen on the Daily Fire Risk Map . This high risk of fire is expected to continue in the coming days,” the alert says. “US citizens living in or traveling near any of the affected areas should follow instructions from local authorities and closely monitor the local media and emergency alerts.”

The good news for travelers is that there are currently no fires in areas that are frequented by tourists on the mainland or on the Greek Islands , Vinke told Traveler on Monday.

“Given the heat in Athens and the air quality, I would suggest to anyone visiting the capital to adjust their pace, avoid going for long walks especially in the middle of the day, and perhaps visit a museum rather than climbing up Filopappou Hill or running in the old Olympic stadium," she said. "The conditions in Athens are not ideal for a long stay, but that holds for August in general. The islands, in contrast, are lovely and breezy right now, wonderful for enjoying holidays without having to deal with the unbearable heat large parts of southern Europe suffer this time of year.”

"In short, I see no reason for anyone who has booked holidays in Greece to change plans, and indeed, coming for holidays as planned is also the best way to help [local residents and businesses]” Vinke said.

Which airlines have canceled flights to Athens?

As of Thursday August 15, airlines have not altered their flight schedule or canceled flights to or from Athens due to the wildfires. “The main concern is if the fires get any closer to Athens, flights will be affected. The airport is north of Athens and the fires are north of Athens,” Ronnie Liadis , a Condé Nast Traveler travel specialist with an expertise in Greece, said on Monday.

“Several airlines operate directly into the islands and Athens can be avoided,” she said. “Airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Aegean, and SkyExpress operate direct flights from several cities in Europe such as Frankfurt, Paris, and London. This is an option for travelers who are flying to Mykonos, Crete, Santorini and Corfu. ”

As for transit around Greece, the coast guard has redirected all ferries from the Rafina port in Athens to Laviro, a port located further south, Athens-based travel blogger and Condé Nast Traveler contributor Rebecca Hall told Traveler.

This is a developing news story and will be updated with more information. A version of this article was originally published on Condé Nast Traveller UK.

I Went to Paris With 1 Suitcase and 7 Travel Capsule Wardrobe Staples, From $11

Including comfy sneakers and a matching set.

i travel in style meaning

Kyra Surgent, Courtesy / InStyle

As a fashion writer, I’m always brainstorming my next great outfit . So, when Kizik invited me to travel to Paris this summer, I planned my ensembles before arranging my trip’s itinerary (I know where my priorities lie). Considering I couldn’t rendezvous to a major style capital sans the perfect attire, I relied on my trusty travel capsule wardrobe to deliver effortlessly elevated looks that didn’t divulge my tourist status (I left my souvenir shopping to that part). Believe it or not, my Euro summer staples are all available on Amazon —and prices start at just $11.

Below, browse through the seven pieces I reached for on repeat during my five-day stay in France. The following items are well-suited for long days of sightseeing, champagne tasting, and croissant eating—I can attest. You’ll find versatile basics including my go-to maxi skirt , comfy sneakers , and favorite lightweight sweater , plus expensive-looking accessories like stylish shades and statement jewelry . Whether you have a trip on your calendar or you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe, snag my shopping writer-approved picks pronto.

Editor-Loved Travel Capsule Wardrobe Items

  • Annebouti Maxi Skirt , $31 with coupon (Originally $33)
  • Kizik Milan Slip-On Sneakers , $99 (Originally $119)
  • Anrabess High-Neck Tank Top , $15 (Originally $20)

  • Amazon Essentials Lightweight Cardigan , $25
  • Envyou Hammered Gold Statement Earrings , $11 with coupon (Originally $13)

Annebouti Maxi Skirt

My only complaint about the Annebouti Maxi Skirt ? I wish I had purchased it sooner. The $31 basic became my best friend on my French excursion, and I’ve excessively outfit-repeated with it since. It’s made from a lightweight polyester that delivers a breezy feel and effortless look. Plus, it has an elastic waistband which offers extreme comfort. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve worn jeans all summer. While you can’t go wrong with the ethereal white option, the skirt is available in five additional neutral tones and dainty patterns.

Kizik Milan Slip-On Sneakers

It’s no secret that reliable sneakers are a non-negotiable for every vacation, and Kizik’s Milan pair is the quintessential pick. The under-$100 kicks boast a stylish silhouette, which I paired with everything from casual bermuda shorts to flowy dresses for the entirety of my Paris trip. Most importantly, the shoes offer a pillowy feel with each step along with unmatched support for long days on your feet. If it couldn’t get better, the sneakers are blister-free right out of the box, and they boast a convenient slip-on design in spite of their lace-up disguise.

Amazon Essentials Lightweight Cardigan

Regardless of where you’re voyaging, light layers are essential, and you can’t go wrong with the Amazon Essentials cardigan . I bundled in the timeless $25 style on my plane rides, tied it around my shoulders in Paris, and continue to reach for it on repeat in my daily outfit rotation. The classic piece features a crew neckline and flattering-yet-comfortable fit. Plus, it’s made from an ultra-soft cotton blend that’s not too heavy but not too thin. It’s the just-right Goldilocks sweater for impending transitional weather. Shop the pick in a whopping 26 colorways to coordinate with the rest of your vacay looks.

Head to Amazon to snag my travel capsule wardrobe staples from $11 ahead of your next getaway.

Your Horoscope for the New Moon in Leo

These moonbeams bring amazing vibes.

new moon in leo

New Moons are a time for rejuvenation and manifestation. If you have a lack in your life, then this is the time the collective will work to fill it—whether through a new experience, person, or item. We must make space for beginnings and foolish behavior during New Moons. Mind you, we are all fools when beginning something new, so don't be scared to get experimental.

Patience, perseverance, and support from your loved ones will get you through summer 2024. Despite all the commotion and chaos brewing in the atmosphere, there are positive occurrences worth being optimistic about. As we move through Leo season , the feeling of needing affirmation and reassurance is beginning to reach an all-time high. Society wants us to judge our value based on an always-increasing income and others' public praise. If you're missing that, you may feel like there's an issue with your work ethic—even if in reality, you’re doing just fine.

Despite Leo being represented by the powerful and majestic lion, this energy carries the tenderness of a house cat with unmet needs. Right now, the energy can feel like paranoia, anger, disrespect, sadness, or ennui. The stars align in a pattern that suggests a need to keep faith and trust the process. If you have Leo placements, you likely have plenty of practice fluffing up your mane and trusting your ability to create your own reality. There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic during this New Moon in Leo, so be sure to keep your hope alive!

On August 4, 2024, at 7:13 A.M. Eastern Time, the Moon will proudly join the Sun in Leo, forming the annual New Moon in Leo. As a fixed zodiac sign, Leo is associated with the will to maintain and protect its own. Think of the Disney movie The Lion King , when Mufasa tells his son Simba, “All that the light touches is ours.” Like the lions in the movie, Leo is king of its jungle, willing to do all necessary to protect its pride.

No matter your zodiac sign, this New Moon calls for keeping calm and respecting that the universe and all within it. With New Moon tightly conjunct with Pars Fortuna , a mathematical point of luck, and making pleasant connections with Mars and Jupiter, your social status and career will experience meaningful developments. Just avoid holding your breath or trying to predict the future.

Read your Sun, Moon, and Rising sign horoscope for the New Moon in Leo:

Have fun, Aries. Really let yourself cut loose and be a goofball. Find someone or a group of people with who you can allow your inner child to run free. You may be unaware of how hard you are on yourself, and as a result, you may be prematurely aging yourself in the worst way! We all deserve a little silliness every now and again, so relax and lose yourself in what’s fun.

Under this New Moon, bring a new piece of furniture or some art into your home: a statement piece that absolutely sets you apart as a royal within your domain. After careful thought and reviewing your Pinterest pins, proceed with complete confidence on what it is you want, whether or not it’s a dupe or an original. Having items in your home that pleasurably stimulate your senses is an understated luxury.

Do you feel like you’re choking on your words or too dehydrated to get your statements out with confidence? Well, drink up, babes, because you deserve to be heard. Many of you will benefit from an hour of silence and complete focus as you journal. Your willingness to center yourself and become clear on your thoughts will further fuel your self-confidence.

Sometimes hotties have to wish upon a star, you know? Cancer, you have to budget and know what you can afford. You can still occasionally spoil yourself as you build your nest egg to provide an extra cushion of safety. You have to know how much energy you’re willing to exert. Be sure to avoid spending money you don’t have. On that note, your finances are looking pretty sweet during the New Moon in Leo!

All eyes are on you, and what a great time for spectators to catch glances of your majesty. The New Moon in your sign is giving you the ability to bring some meaningful dreams to life. If you’re planning to manifest during this New Moon, focus on identifying your strengths, weaknesses, and remarkable superpowers. What are you uniquely skilled at doing in ways those around you are not? It is through your star power that you will succeed beyond your wildest dreams.

Down the rabbit hole you go, Virgo. This New Moon starts you on a two-month journey through Wonderland. Instead of lashing out or dashing past unusual sights and experiences, take time to wonder about how you grew to be shocked by what you’re seeing. Your ability to inquire within will help you develop a deeper appreciation of yourself.

Your ability to see the world from a multitude of perspectives is coming in clutch during the New Moon in Leo. Normally, people might not dedicate as much time as you do to juggling differing perspectives–whether or not you do it for the greater good is up to you! The New Moon is allowing you the opportunity to be a powerful mediator within your community. Are you going to be a part of helping us all get along and grow up?

Every year around this time you’re blessed with either a glow up or a valuable lesson. For this swirl around the Sun, you’re being gifted with the advancements and recognition you’re been working for in your career. This is a tremendous time for leveling up. Treat this New Moon as a launch pad, but you must do the work consistently. Good luck, babes!

Sagittarius

Sagittarius, school’s back in session and it’s time for you to hit the books. Some of you are entering new courses, while others are enrolling in a workshop. While I shouldn’t have to tell a Sagittarius to do whatever the f*ck they want, let’s preface this horoscope with a PSA: DO WHAT THE F*CK YOU WANT! Kindly, your friendly middle sister who just wants you to follow your dreams (not someone else’s, unless y’all are collabing or whateva).

You have the potential to go deeper, and if the opportunity arises, I say go for it. The planets and luminaries seem to be allowing you to take what you’ve learned and let it help you experience deep and meaningful connections. Focus less on the synergy of your relationships and unwind. When you let your guard down and pause, you might find it’s easier to move forward.

Wow, how's the wedding planning coming? Okay, maybe you're not getting married–but you might as well start considering what you want from your next relationship (or the next stage of your current one). With the New Moon in Leo joined by Venus, the planet of love and beauty, in your house of relationships, now is a lovely time for romance. Lovers, close friends, and strategic partnerships are available to you if you’re willing to play nice.

With each step, blink, tilt of your head, and flex, you are using muscles that condition your reflexes, patterns, and physical movements. During the New Moon in Leo, you are being granted the opportunity to sit in the observer’s seat. Getting a new perspective on your health and lifestyle is as simple as stepping outside of your comfort zone and into a new environment. Have you taken a spin class? How about puppy yoga? You could find the best results come from developing a sunrise stretching routine. Whatever it is, try something new.

I Spent 7 Weeks in Europe With Just a Carry-on, and These Are the 10 Dresses I Wore on Repeat — From $36

It’s not too late to book that dream Europe vacation...

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

One of my life’s biggest regrets is not studying abroad in college and not reaching for that elusive chance for total immersion into another culture during a semester away. Though I’ve been able to make up for it post-graduation with nearly 20 trips to Europe, from family jaunts to Italy and conferences in Riga, Latvia to posh London stays with Hilton , it has still felt like there was always a little something missing. Enter: my self-coined “adult study abroad summer,” when I connected a string of work trips with some personal exploration for a full seven weeks away from home.

This seven-nation European swing began with a memorable mother-daughter Adriatic cruise with Viking, then a group trip to the Republic of Georgia, a self-guided Balkan adventure through Albania, Corfu, and North Macedonia, and finally a luxurious sail around the Greek Isles with Windstar. As the captain of Team Carry-on-only , it was a delicate dance to properly pack for the weather , plus a mix of casual and more formal events and destinations. Luckily, I was able to curate the perfect wardrobe with a slew of versatile travel dresses for every possible occasion. Sightseeing at a museum? Check. Michelin-star dinner out? Covered. Walking day exploring a new city? Done. Below, are the 10 dresses I suggest packing for the ultimate European summer vacation.

A Linen Shirtdress

Is there a fabric more iconic, cooling, and chic than linen in the summer? I think not. I wore my lovely linen-blend Alex Mill shirtdress everywhere from a Greek olive oil tasting in Monemvasia via Windstar to a casual lakeside dinner of Ohrid trout in North Macedonia, but you can achieve the same look with this version from J.Crew; it's on mega sale and available in plenty of colors in case you’re not sold on white (pasta stains, oh me oh my). Pro tip: Consider adding a linen blazer to the mix, too. It'll be an elegant, lightweight jacket option that's easy to pack (and mix and match).

An Elevated Athletic Dress

Americans love athleisure, a trend that’s been slower to catch on across the pond. While I wouldn't recommend sporting that leggings set out and about, I do suggest packing an athletic dress — especially one tailored enough that it could be mistaken for a normal dress — to get away with being comfy and stylish on your Euro getaway. I utilized a similar style to this Amazon-loved one for a day spent exploring beaches in Corfu, off the coast of Albania, part of the Ionian Islands of Greece. With an oversized button-down shirt , I could go straight from the sunny shores to a moonlit dinner in town without having to stop back at the Airbnb.

A Matching Skirt Set

Though not technically a dress, a matching skirt set does so much for a travel wardrobe that it is worth the space in your carry-on. I have my eye on this vibrant red Farm Rio set , which would be perfect against the stark white homes in Ohrid; the pop of color would also make for compelling photos against the stunning cerulean backdrop of Lake Ohrid, one of the world’s oldest lakes. However, many shoppers have given the Zesica Matching Skirt Set from Amazon their stamp of approval.

Whichever you choose, know that you're signing up for multiple mix-and-match options. You can wear the top with high-waisted white jeans , or try the skirt with a sleek black tank . Trust me on this one, I saw so many coordinating sets on the streets of Europe, from the golden capital of Malta to the balmy Dalmatian Coast, and this is one item I truly wished I would have packed for my summer away.

A 'Nap' Dress

Hill House Home

A COVID-era trend turned wardrobe staple, the nap dress is meant to be so comfortable you can actually nap in it. I’m a longtime fan of Hill House Home, and I own more than 20 of these pretty dresses in whimsical prints. For travel purposes, I prefer to pack a more classic nap dress, like the navy Ellie style , which matches more and is less memorable than a fussier or more elaborate print. Bonus: it’s truly wrinkle-resistant, so you can avoid the iron and toss it on before exploring old town Kotor.

Alternatively, Amazon has similar nap dress-inspired silhouettes at lower price points; check out the Zesica Plaid Square Neck Puff Sleeve Midi Dress and the Chouyatou Smocked Flounce Dress starting at $29.

A Ballet-style Midi Dress

No bow, no go — Balletcore is very much in . I mean, did it ever really leave? To incorporate the trend into your travel wardrobe, I'd pick up this gorgeous fit-and-flare dress from Quince; it strikes the perfect balance between flowy and structured so you can feel comfy and look put-together. I wore a similar dress nonstop during my Georgia trip, going from mountains to vineyards to the bustling capital city and back again. In terms of accessorizing this classic silhouette, snag one of these uber-popular Marzoline beauties that are handmade in Milan.

A Peachy Pick

Embrace Peach Fuzz, the Pantone Color of the Year , with a warm, pastel-hued dress like this one from Charles Henry. It's breezy enough to beat the heat, but modest enough to mimic cap sleeves when visiting cathedrals or religious sites. Plus, the midi length keeps it modern and approachable, while the cotton poplin fabric means only natural fibers touch your skin. Though this shade isn’t my usual cup of tea, I spotted it on plenty of other European travelers and locals alike.

A Blue and White Dress

Abercrombie & Fitch

While peach may dominate the color wheel for the moment, a classic combination for any Euro getaway is blue and white. You might associate the color palette with Santorini for its famous white buildings and contrasting blue domes, but the duo really works anywhere in Europe. Take this chic Abercrombie pick for example. It's made with 100 percent cotton, features a cute tie, and is a comfy maxi dress length. It’s practically begging for some island time. See you soon, Cyclades.

A Fun Cut-out Dress

A pretty dress that showcases just a peek of skin is ever-so playful and flirty, but there are elegant ways to nail the look. Amazon shoppers love this billowy maxi dress, which has two modest side cut-outs, adding unique contrast to the classic square-neck, short-sleeve silhouette. You can also play with cut-outs more elegantly with a gown like this metallic floral maxi , which would make a great destination wedding guest dress. Now if only my family would decide to throw weddings abroad rather than in our Midwestern hometown…

A White Tennis Dress

There's no denying Tenniscore's presence in 2024's list of summer trends . And, as luck would have it, the look makes for an effortlessly stylish travel outfit. A classic white tennis dress pick like this Amazon-loved one is an easy layering piece that is equal parts comfy and elevated with its corset details and exaggerated pleats for easy movement when walking the winding streets of Rome. Afraid of spilling gelato on the pristine shade? Opt for it in one of its other eight available colors. Bonus: this dress is currently on sale, too!

A Jumpsuit

Okay, hear me out. I know this isn’t technically a dress, but a cute jumpsuit can function the same way: throw it on, stay comfortable, and make the most of your Euro trip. Spanx makes the bottom half of my go-to travel outfit ( hello, Booty Boost leggings ), but I have seen the Oprah-loved brand 's jumpsuit around more than any other item this year. It’s made in regular, petite, and tall sizes, crafted from the softest material, and comes in four neutral colorways. Pair this jumpsuit with a cozy sweatshirt, like Oprah's favorite AirEssentials Half-zip , for the ultimate monochromatic travel set.

Just How Demure Are You?

A TikTok trend has breathed new life into a fusty word.

A still from a TikTok video shows Jools Lebron, wearing dramatic false eyelashes, rosy blush and a flowing golden wig, addressing a camera as she sits in the driver’s seat of a car. The onscreen text reads: “How to be demure and modest and respectful at the workplace.”

By The Styles Desk

If you opened TikTok this week and felt that suddenly everyone was using the word “demure” out of nowhere, you’re not alone.

Your morning coffee with just a little half-and-half? Demure. The way you sit down gracefully on the subway? Very demure. The way you floss your teeth after lunch in the office bathroom before returning to your cubicle? Absolutely, totally demure.

Seemingly overnight, an adjective usually reserved for a reserved woman has become the semi-ironic word du jour on social media.

On Aug. 2, a TikTok creator who goes by the name Jools Lebron posted a video with tips about managing makeup and mustache sweat and being demure.

Later that day, she posted another video , which has been viewed four million times, offering tips on how to be demure at work. “Very demure, very mindful," she says, explaining her perfume, clothing and hairstyle choices for the workplace. Ms. Lebron has since posted dozens more such videos discussing how to be demure in all sorts of situations, like nail salons, hotels and drag shows.

Ms. Lebron, who did not respond to requests for comment, is one of several trans creators on TikTok whose playful use of “demure” in recent videos has helped the word catch on with other users.

“There has been so many demure divas who have come before me,” Ms. Lebron said in a video , naming two fellow content creators as well as Venus Xtravaganza, a trans performer who featured prominently in the influential documentary “ Paris Is Burning .”

On TikTok, the word has spread far beyond its original roots. Now, the viral term has become fodder for brands, like the restaurant chain Chili’s and the New York City Department of Sanitation, which posted on Instagram that the city’s new official garbage bins were … you know what .

Members of the Styles desk gathered to discuss how anyone and everything, it seems, can be demure.

Madison Malone Kircher Let’s start with the big question on everyone’s minds: What exactly does “demure” mean in this moment?

Callie Holtermann Every few weeks, a new word starts getting repeated ad nauseam online in ways that only sort of relate to its original definition. Last week, that word was “brat.” This week, it’s basically the exact opposite: “demure.”

Gina Cherelus Someone who is demure is typically reserved and modest, so it’s always fascinating to see how a word has strayed from its meaning. Now, people online are using it to describe their style of dress, hair or even their simple latte order.

Melissa Guerrero I’ve also seen people use the word to describe manners, their cleaning habits and setting boundaries with other people.

Gina Cherelus Someone who is mindful, perhaps even cutesy?

Madison Malone Kircher Right, Gina, there also seems to be a constellation of related words: “mindful,” “cutesy,” “respectful,” to name a few.

Anthony Rotunno Some of these terms bring to mind another recent word of the week: “wholesome.” What makes something demure versus wholesome?

Madison Malone Kircher Demure seems much more feminized.

Callie Holtermann Demure is not bold and flashy. It’s tucking your hair behind your ear. It’s a Peter Pan collar. It’s nibbling on some raspberries!

Madison Malone Kircher Nibbling DEMURELY!

Callie Holtermann I don’t think the people using this term online are actually pushing for people — women, especially — to be more restrained and deferential. I think it’s all kind of a bit.

Melissa Guerrero There’s a hint of sarcasm in demure. I don’t know if wholesome feels like that.

Callie Holtermann They’re saying it with a wink: I know that this is typically the affect we associate with femininity, and I’m going to subvert it a bit by applying it to my coffee order or my favorite Real Housewife.

Gina Cherelus I think what’s also happening is that people are tailoring it to themselves with additional phrases and words in an attempt to prove they are better at it then the next person. It’s slightly competitive. Like, You might wear your hair in big curls, but I wear a tight bun because I’m demure, not extra.

Madison Malone Kircher Patrick Ta, the makeup artist, invited Jools Lebron to a brand event in New York this week, which feels like a textbook example of how viral moments quickly become corporate these days.

Anthony Rotunno The word-of-the-week-to-brand-ambassador pipeline strikes again! When was the last time any of you used the word “demure” before this past week? It feels so old-timey.

Gina Cherelus Almost never, but TikTok reminded me that Emily Gilmore from the show “Gilmore Girls” once referred to Rory as such, so yes: old-timey.

Melissa Guerrero Demure’s been a word that I have heard the Filipinas in my family use.

Madison Malone Kircher Demureness inherently feels like it is the opposite of everything brat. Is this the end of “brat” summer ?

Anthony Rotunno If Jake Tapper says “demure” on CNN, or if Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia says it while riding a tractor, it is.

Callie Holtermann I’m sure the think pieces are incoming, but it seems pretty tongue-in-cheek for now. Still, I bet Tim Walz will be getting described as “demure” within the week.

Madison Malone Kircher Is Tim Walz demure? Don’t answer that. We’ve seen several recent trends — coquette , the rise of the trad wife — that emphasize the ultrafeminine. Is this related?

Callie Holtermann The way it’s being used now feels related to the great “girl”-ification of the internet last summer: girl dinner , hot girl walk . I think it’s being used in a way that’s broader than the actual definition. Some of this stuff isn’t actually shy or modest.

Madison Malone Kircher Exactly. Making videos for millions on the internet isn’t actually demure. And that’s the point.

Callie Holtermann It feels like a way of establishing one’s own parameters for femininity (and maybe even poking fun at the old ones). Trad wives might be demure in a literal sense, but the people using the word online now are going to stretch and reshape its definition into something that feels authentic — or at least fun and silly — to them.

Madison Malone Kircher Fun, silly and everywhere. I feel like my For You Page is entirely people making demure content at this point.

Anthony Rotunno And with THAT, I’m leaving the chat.

Madison Malone Kircher Please do so demurely, thank you.

Madison Malone Kircher , Callie Holtermann , Gina Cherelus , Melissa Guerrero and Anthony Rotunno contributed reporting.
