In the sun-drenched islands of Greece, it is easy to get lost in the deep azure blue of the Aegean Sea and the postcard perfect viewpoints that arrive around every corner. But if you join one of our Greek Island hopping tours, you will see a side of Greece that is multifaceted and utterly interesting.
From the ancient port town of Athens, our Greek Island hopping tours start with an introduction to a history so grand that its impact is still felt to this day. Everything from democracy to philosophy, architecture to the arts has been influenced by this great city. No place is more apparent to this historical importance than the Acropolis, and our Greek Island hopping tours start with a guided journey through buildings erected as early as the 5th century BC. Discover where the great works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were first performed while touring the Dionysus Theatre. From the classical age of Greece, to the Roman and Byzantine times, Athens has been the centre of it all for thousands of years.
Wandering away from the cobblestone centre, our Greek Island hopping tours will head to the port and venture aboard a Greek ferry to whisk us away to the beautiful and idyllic Greek Isles. While on the islands, our guided tours of Greece are at a relaxed pace to allow our group time to enjoy the splendours of history, gain valuable insights into Greek culture, taste the delicious cuisine from local restaurants, but also enough time to reflect on the magnificent journey and have some independent explorations.
Many of the towns we visit are as scenic as they are serene. Whitewashed buildings concealing dozens of little shrines, chapels, and churches look out onto breezy harbour fronts and sandy shorelines. Even though our Greek Island hopping tours take us far from the mainland, history and folklore has a way of weaving into these sacred islands. On the tiny island of Delos, we join our local guide for a tour of the sanctuary which was once the religious and political capital of the Cyclades for nearly 1000 years. Merchants and mariners from as far as Syria and Egypt once ventured to this tiny island, and a visit to the theatre which once held 5,500 people in one sitting allows us to imagine how populated and important this place once was.
From morning to sunset, each day on our Greek Island hopping tours offers photographers something to see. Perhaps no sunset is more picturesque than the one we will experience in Santorini. Overlooking the tiny villages that surround Santorini's caldera, the sky here turns a magnificent array of colours that leave all travellers in awe. One look and it is easy to understand how these small villages such as Oia have inspired many generations of artists.
It may be the attractive scenes of Greece that lured you in, or perhaps the sweeping legacies and culture, but it the combination of both which makes Greece so special.

Day 1 Arrival in Athens Today we arrive in Athens, the capital of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. Athens has a long history dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age; in the 5th Century BC, the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Dinner
Day 2 Athens: City Touring Today we enjoy a guided tour of Athens, the heart and soul of Greece.* A large part of the town's historic centre has been converted into a 3-kilometre pedestrian zone (one of the largest in Europe), leading to the major archaeological sites, reconstructing -- to a large degree -- the ancient landscape, thus allowing us to avoid the city's horrendous traffic. As such, much/most of our tour today will be conducted ON FOOT at a leisurely pace. We start at the Acropolis (with hopes to beat the heat/crowds), near the site of the Dionysos Theatre. Constructed in the 6th century BC, it is one of the world's oldest theatres and the place where the great works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were first performed. We will also see a more recent theatre, the Odeon of Herod Atticus from the second century AD, which is still used for concerts and performances. Ascending to the top of the Acropolis, we will see magnificent buildings dating from the 5th century BC, the Golden Age of Athens. On the highest point on the Acropolis is the Parthenon, often considered the finest monument to Greek civilization. The temple was dedicated to Athena "Parthenos," the virgin and patron goddess of the city. After our Acropolis tour, we'll descend by foot and enter the Ancient Agora located adjacent to the Plaka, the old town of Athens. Among the numerous sights in this archaeological park are the well-preserved Temple of Hephaistos and the landmark Roman era Tower of the Winds. Our guided tour ends with a guided visit of the Acropolis Museum, located at the foot of the Acropolis. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece; nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres. After our tour you are free to wander and explore on your own or make your way back to the hotel with your Tour Leader's assistance. * The exact order of our sightseeing in Athens may be altered by your Tour Leader depending on several variables and their judgement on how best to run today's tour. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Athens - Ferry to Mykonos Early this morning we travel by local ferry from Athens' port, Pireaus, to the island of Mykonos.* From the harbour waterfront, you can watch the local fishing boats, or venture into the labyrinth of dazzling, white-washed streets to the many churches, tavernas, or shops selling artisan crafts. In the distance stand a string of windmills that once harnessed the breezes of days gone by. The sugar cube buildings are stacked around a cluster of seafront fishermen's dwellings. The labyrinth design was intended to confuse the pirates who plagued Mykonos in the eighteenth and 19th centuries. The whitewashed houses concealing dozens of little churches, shrines and chapels. * PORTERS ARE GENERALLY NOT AVAILABLE ON THE GREEK ISLES, OR ON FERRIES BETWEEN THEM. You MUST be able to carry / wheel your baggage on and off ferries. Overnight on Mykonos. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner
Day 4 Mykonos: Walking Tour & Boat Trip to Delos This morning we'll take you on an orientation walking tour of Mykonos Chora. We wander the pirate-proof streets of town and see the Paraportiani Church near the quay, an architectural masterpiece of five chapels in one. We then meet the boat that will take us to the tiny sacred island of Delos (40 minutes away). Delos gives the whole group of islands surrounding it their name, the Cyclades -- so named because they form a circle (kyklos) around Delos. For nearly 1,000 years this sanctuary was the political and religious centre of the Aegean. Leto, pregnant by Zeus, gave birth to the twins Apollo and Artemis on Delos. In the 18th century BC, the annual Delia Festival was established on the island to celebrate the birth of Apollo. Delos was populated during its height in Hellenistic times with wealthy merchants, mariners and bankers from as far away as Egypt and Syria. During our guided walking tour of Delos, we will see the Agora of the Competialists, Roman merchants or freed slaves who worshipped the guardian spirits of crossroads; the Sanctuary of Apollo, the three temples of Apollo and the Sanctuary of Dionysus. In the House of the Masks we are able to see a mosaic portraying Dionysus riding on a panthers back. The theatre here could seat 5,500 people. We return to Mykonos where you will have free time to explore Mykonos town on your own. Overnight on Mykonos. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner
Day 5 Mykonos - Ferry to Santorini Today we take a ferry or hydrofoil (depending on scheduling) to the island of Santorini. Vast geological upheavals have given this island its unique form resulting in the nickname, "Pre-Historic Pompeii." The effect of terracing makes this unlike any other island, Greece's most visually stunning. Santorini is the island of churches, wine, and donkeys! From as early as 3000 BC the island developed as an outpost of Minoan civilization until around 1650 BC when the volcano erupted. At this point the island's history became linked with the legend of Atlantis. At some point in our visit, we'll stop in at the The Museum of Prehistoric Thera. It was built on the site of the old Ypapanti Church, destroyed in the 1956 earthquake. The museum houses a very large number of ancient artifacts from various excavations on Santorini, such as at Akrotiri and at the nearby Potamos site. Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner
Day 6 Santorini: Akrotiri & Island Tour Visually, Santorini is the most spectacular of the Cycladic islands. With its brilliant flooded caldera, high cliffs and charming villages, it is the Greek Isle of everyone's dreams. Our coach tour today will take us to Santorini's many highlights. We begin with a visit to Akrotiri for a thorough guided tour. Excavations have revealed a complete prehistoric Minoan city with squares, streets, and two-storey houses, which contained marvelous frescoes. The buildings date to the late 16th century BC. No skeletons or treasures have been found in Akrotiri, so historians think that the inhabitants were forewarned of the eruption and were able to escape. The excavations have yielded evidence that has revolutionized our knowledge of the Late Bronze Age; indeed the town has been called a "Bronze-age Pompeii." We will also visit the hilltop village of Pyrgos, once the capital of the island and home to more than 30 churches. The village is composed of traditional houses built around the Venetian Castle and the small streets follow the shape of the hill. Climbing from the square up to the castle of Pyrgos, the stone houses crowd more densely together within the labyrinth of narrow vaulted lanes. Our drive around the island will also take us up to the Prophet Elias Monastery built on the highest point of the island in 1711 AD. Though we will not visit inside the monastery, the view from here is breathtaking. Fira is the capital of the island and the most important village. Perched on the edge of an impressive cliff 260m high, the town offers great panoramic views over the submerged volcano. Here the small streets are filled with all kind of shops, cafes, and restaurants. After an orientation walk through the town, you might choose to visit the impressive Archaeological Museum in your spare time (optional). This museum features many artifacts dating back to the time of the Cycladic Civilization. The most impressive legacies of this civilization are the statuettes carved from Parian marble -- the famous Cycladic figurines. Like statuettes of Neolithic times they depicted images of the Great Mother. Other remains include bronze and obsidian tools and weapons, gold jewelry, and stone and clay vases and pots. Return to Kamari Beach (those who wish to extend their time in Fira can return to Kamari using the public bus system). Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner
Day 7 Santorini: Fira - Imerovigli - Oia / Free Afternoon This morning we will head to the small town of Oia, situated at the northern tip of the island. We start by taking the public bus to Fira, where we enjoy the stunning caldera views and dramatic setting. From here we will follow the scenic path along the vast caldera rim. Our route leads up through the village of Firostefani and brings us to the village of Imerovigi. The views are ever-changing as the perspective of the island changes minute by minute. We will look out to Skaros, the remains of a Venetian Castle built in 1207 by Marco Sanudo, the ruler of all Cyclades islands that time. From Imerovigli we will continue by bus to Oia (pronounced "EE-ah"). Built on a steep slope of the caldera, many of Oia's dwellings nestle in the niches hewn in the volcanic rock. This was once a major fishing port but is principally known these days as perhaps the most dramatically situated towns in the whole of Greece. The peak of prosperity for this small port town was reached in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time the locally based merchant fleet plied its trade in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially from Alexandria to Russia. The two-story captains' houses built on the highest part of the village are a reminder of the village's former affluence. Oia is a place where many artists have found their inspiration... and here we will wander the narrow streets and old ruins, and enjoy the stunning views of the caldera with panoramic views of the rest of Santorini and the Aegean Sea. After a break for lunch we will return back to Fira and Kamari. We then return to Kamari Beach (those who wish to extend their time in Oia or Fira can return to Kamari using the public bus system). The balance of your day is free to explore on your own, and your Tour Leader will assist with options. Perhaps enjoy some time on one of Santorini's famous black beaches, or hike up to the ruins of Ancient Thira. Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner
Day 8 Santorini - Fly to Athens Today we'll fly back to Athens,* aiming to have some free time in the city for some last minute shopping and/or sightseeing. * PLEASE NOTE: Ever-changing air schedules and weather delays may necessitate a return to Athens by ferry. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner
Day 9 Departure Departure from Athens. KALO TAXIDI/BON VOYAGE! Included Meal(s): Breakfast
Inclusions Breakfast and dinner (mostly local restaurants) daily. All sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters. Airport transfers for land & air customers arriving/departing on tour dates.
Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuities, lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), international air taxes (if applicable), and excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on optional meal costs and shopping.
Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered in spring, summer, and fall, the most popular being spring and fall when temperatures are milder, crowds thinner, and airfares lower. Spring is popular for green landscapes and wildflowers; beachgoers prefer fall sea temperatures. The region has a Mediterranean climate with early springs, long hot and dry summers, and autumns that are bright and warm into mid-October. Showers are possible in spring, rare in summer, and possible in late fall.
Transport and Travel Conditions This is not a cruise! We travel between islands via local ferries, which can range from hydrofoils to large vehicle carrying vessels. Greek ferry schedules tend to change without notice; some itinerary adjustments may be necessary at the discretion of your Tour Leader. Land transport (city & island tours, port transfers) by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on group size (see 'group size'); some local buses and taxis. Porter service is rarely available on the islands (see 'inclusions'); you MUST be independent with your luggage, especially getting on / off ferries. This trip is typical of most of our European tours, which are ambitious and involve full days of travel and sightseeing. While we don't have any actual strenuous activity (ie hiking) built into the program, you will do a lot of walking on this trip. These walks will mostly be in the form of walking tours of towns and cities and short walks to dinner. Being Europe, and a hilly/mountainous area, cobbles, uneven surfaces, and slopes/stairs are common. If you are accustomed to typical "bus tours," which rely heavily on vehicular transport for all sightseeing activities, you should be aware that this tour is considerably more active.
Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .
Activity Level: 2 These are particularly busy tours that feature a lot of moving around, sometimes by train and short journeys on local transport. Walking tours of towns and cities are leisurely but you should be prepared to be on your feet for several hours. Some of our cultural trips that occur at high altitude and/or require greater independence with baggage handling (at hotels, airports, train stations) also fall into this category.
To learn more about the Activity levels, please visit our tour styles page.
Accommodation Well-located, air-conditioned, mid-range hotels (3-4 star) throughout. Island hotels are smaller properties (3-4 story) that will likely not have elevators. All hotels have en suite bath, though most have shower only. A special note about Santorini, which is primarily a luxury tourism destination and, while we can confidently promise our visit will be fulfilling and rewarding, one's hotel expectations must be in line with our overall purpose, which is sightseeing and cultural experience and not focused on the "hotel experience" per se. Single rooms are limited and likely smaller than twins.
Staff and Support Tour Leader throughout, driver (s), local step-on local guides in various locales.
Group Size Maximum 18 plus Tour Leader
Tour Extensions This tour is part of a series that can be upgraded to make for a longer trip. For more options, please refer to tour code/s:

Greek Islands Tours & Travel
Greek Islands Attractions & Landmarks Guide
The Greek Islands combine millennia of history with sunshine and blue waters like few other destinations in the world. Strewn across the Aegean and Ionian seas like glistening jewels – there are more than 6,000 in all, including small islets, with 227 inhabited -- Greece’s fabled islands are rich in cultural and natural treasures. Fortunately for the traveler, their variety is as great as their numbers – so pick an isle or two or three, and find a tour that matches your dreams.
With more than 200 islands from which to choose, it helps to know that the Greek Islands can be divided into six main groups and the island of Crete. You can then begin to search for tours and cruises that meet your ideas of a dream trip.
Are Greek Islands cruises only for young people?
Most definitely not! Tours geared towards younger travelers are only a small fraction of the plethora of tour Greek Islands cruise options offered on Stride. A large portion of tours are tailored for family trips, active adventure, and senior travel. The great thing about Greek Islands cruises is that you can customize your trip to fit your travel preferences.
If you feel like touring Mykonos , but are not interested in a party atmosphere, you can explore the town and famous windmills throughout the day and catch a relaxing sunset beach view dinner at a local restaurant and spend the night engaging in your activity of choice on your cruise ship.
When docked at various Greek Islands, you can choose to participate in more active or water-related activities, you can meander around the town and shop, or you can have a carefree day lounging on the beach. The world is your oyster on a Greek Islands cruise!
Here are the major islands and recommended destinations in each group – though it’s hard to go wrong on most any Greek island.
Touring The Saronic Gulf Islands
Salamis, Aegina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses
Just south of Athens and an easy boat trip away lie the five islands of the Saronic Gulf. While not as stunning as other island groups, they’re still packed with scenery, sights, history, hotels, decent beaches – and that incredible Greek sun-kissed light.
Each is different from the other, however, in some respects. Hydra has a stylish port and no motorized traffic. Spetses (the setting for John Fowles’ novel The Magus) bans cars in town, but allows motorbikes. And unlike Hydra, Spetses is woodsy and has better beaches.
Aegina, where Nikos Kazantzakis wrote Zorba the Greek, boasts the best preserved classical temple in all the Greek isles: the Doric Temple of Aphaia – as well as the best pistachios. Poros, near the Peloponnesian Peninsula, has a lively harbor and colorful hillside ambiance. Salamis is the closest to Athens and a reasonable choice if you just have a short time to visit an island.
Touring The Cyclades
Major islands include Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros, Tinos, and Folegandros, as well as the “Minor Cyclades” : Donousa, Irakleia, Koufonisia and Schinousa.
The 56 Cycladic islands are the most popular with international travelers, and many promise the prototypical Greek island experience of sun, sand, and sea with healthy doses of ancient history tossed in for good measure. They are situated southwest of Athens in the Aegean Sea.
Best known are Mykonos and Santorini. Since the early 1960s, both have developed from islands filled with mostly sleepy fishing villages into hot spots attracting travelers from around the world. A third “party” isle, Ios, is another transformed Cycladic island.
Mykonos, where dazzling whitewashed cubist houses and traditional windmills dot rocky, often barren hillsides, attracts a mostly younger but well-heeled crowd. Mykonos is also the logical starting-off spot for a tour of nearby Delos, uninhabited except for the ruins of ancient temples dedicated to Apollo, the sun god.
Santorini, whose narrow, winding, cobbled streets in its two main towns, Fira and Oia, draw thousands of visitors per day in summer, is the site of the world’s most violent non-tourist explosion some 3,500 years ago – a volcano that left a spectacular caldera, now filled with water and serving as the harbor, that offers some of the finest views in the world from atop the island’s cliffs. Santorini is often cited as the location of legendary Atlantis, the mythical civilization buried beneath the sea.
But there are many other less crowded choices, including beautiful islands like Naxos and Milos, and still largely undiscovered – but equally scenic -- Cycladic islands like Folegandros and Amorgos.
Touring Crete
The largest and most southerly of the major Greek islands, Crete is a “group” unto itself – and worthy of an entire tour on its own. It rivals Corfu, Santorini and a few others as the most beautiful of all the islands, and it’s one of the most historic as well – it was once the center of the highly developed Minoan civilization, wiped out by the volcanic explosion on Santorini. You can view the ruins of that civilization – including famed frescoes - - at Knossos near Iraklio on Crete’s north coast.
Crete draws as many as one quarter of all visitors to the Greek islands, but has more space to accommodate them; still, the best times to visit are the off seasons, spring and fall, when air temperatures are cooler and the sea waters are generally warm enough for swimming. Beyond the archaeological and sand-swept attractions lie a host of traditional villages, mountains, caves, wineries, and more.
Touring The Dodecanese
Islands include Astypalaia, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kasos, Kastellorizo, Kos, Lipsi, Leros, Nisyros, Patmos, Rhodes, Symi, Tilos, and Chalki.
The Dodecanese, closer to Turkey than to mainland Greece, have been invaded and occupied countless times, and some show strong Ottoman and other influences in architecture and culture.
Rhodes displays a distinctly medieval look, having been home to the crusading Knights Templar order for hundreds of years. You can explore many of the Templars’ architectural gems in the old section of its major city, Rhodes Town.
Kos, just three miles from the Turkish coast, was the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, and is reputed to be good for what ails you even today – that is, if you yearn to experience mountain villages, beautiful beaches, and historic archaeological ruins.
Patmos was the island where St. John is said to have written the Book of Revelations while living in a cave. You can hike up a trail from the town of Hora (the main port) to view the cave and a nearby monastery.
Touring The Islands of the Northeast Aegean
Islands include Agios Efstratios, Thasos, Ikaria, Lesbos, Limnos, Inouses, Samos, Samothrace, Chios, and Psara.
North of the Dodecanese, also near Turkey, are the Islands of the Northeast Aegean. A bit off the beaten path, they make excellent places to discover both ancient and contemporary Greece.
Lush, mountainous Samos – within easy sight of the Turkish coast -- is home to classical ruins, most notably the remains of the Temple of Hera (wife of Zeus), Samos was also the birthplace of the famed mathematician Pythagoras, while, in the early 19 th century, the English poet Lord Byron sang the praises of Samian wine, as do many wine drinkers today.
Lesbos, the third largest Greek island, is known for its mountain trekking and perhaps the finest of all Greek olive oils. Lesbos was also home to Sappho, the ancient Greek poet, and hosted Aristotle himself while he taught at a school of philosophy.
Though little visited today, Samothrace is steeped in the myths of the Trojan War – Homer wrote that Poseidon, the god of the sea, watched the action from there. It was also the site of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, a celebrated religious cult of the pre-Christian era.
Touring The Sporades
Alonissos, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros
The Sporades are a small group of islands not far off the northeast coast of mainland Greece. Two of them -- Skopelos and Skiathos – are major tourist draws.
Skiathos is blessed with gorgeous sandy beaches that fill up with European tourists in July and August but are less crowded the rest of the year. If you get away from the most popular beaches, you’ll find that picturesque, traditional Greece still flourishes here.
Skopelos, where the beaches are more pebbled than sandy, attracts fewer beachgoers but offers vineyards, forests, olive groves, and steep cliffs, adding to its reputation as one of the most scenic Greek islands.
Touring The Ionian Islands
The main islands are Zakynthos, Ithaca, Corfu, Kefallonia, Lefkada, Paxi, and Kythira
The seven major Ionian Islands lie not in the Aegean but in the Ionian Sea, off the western coast of mainland Greece and Albania.
Corfu, often called Greece’s most beautiful island, was the home of Lawrence Durrell, who wrote extensively and lovingly about it. You can visit the Durrell Gardens in Old Town Corfu, which is a maze of medieval streets with both Venetian and Ottoman influences. Lush and largely mountainous, Corfu earned praise from Homer as a “beautiful and rich land,” and Shakespeare is said to have used it as a setting for The Tempest .
Kefallonia, the largest Ionian island, combines mountain scenery with beaches, traditional villages, and forests.
What are the busiest Greek Islands?
The Greek Islands are frequented by tourists year-round, with each island offering a unique and memorable experience. There are several iconic destinations within the Greek Islands that are must-see locations for tourists to visit. These locations tend to be the most popular, busiest islands, especially within the heavily traveled months of summer.
Crete is Greece’s largest island, equipped with the terrain and ample space for extensive nature exploration, such as hiking, trekking, and walking tours, water adventures, such as rafting, kayaking, and canoeing, and cultural and local immersion. One of the top destinations, most frequented by tourists in Crete is Knossos Palace and archeological site.
Known as Europe’s oldest city, Knossos attracts many of Crete’s visitors, who can walk through the city streets envisioning the powerful city as it stood over 2,000 years ago. Less than 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Knossos lies the port-city and capital city of Crete, Heraklion. Here you can explore the city’s scenic harbors and historic frescoes and baths.
2. Santorini
Santorini is known around the world for its iconic whitewashed houses with blue roof buildings in the city of Oia. These celebrated buildings drape over the cliffs overlooking the vast caldera. This postcard-worthy location brings over 2 million tourists to the Greek Island per year.
Expect to wait in a line to get your shot overlooking the picture-perfect town, especially during sunset or sunrise, but don’t worry, the once-in-a-lifetime view is well worth it! The small towns of Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira are frequented by tourists for their traditional Greek culture, scenic architecture, and quaint shops and restaurants.
Equipped with both exotic beach resorts and historical ancient ruins, this Greek island is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands. Many tourists spend time exploring the old city of Rhodes, which is the largest medieval city in all of Europe.
The nearby temple and towers of Lindos is a popular sight to see among tourists, and one of the most photographed locations in all of Rhodes. History buffs will love the Archeological Museum of Rhodes, and nature enthusiasts will enjoy exploring Butterfly Valley and Seven Springs in the southwestern region of the island.
When people think of Mykonos, the first thing that comes to mind is the party culture and lively nightlife atmosphere that the island provides. While this is true, and a large reason that the island is as popular with tourists as it is, there is much more to Mykonos than just a party scene.
There are beautiful beaches to spend a relaxing day in the sun, top-notch shopping, and authentic Greek restaurants. The famous row of 16th-century windmills, which sit on a hill above Mykonos town, are also a landmark frequented by tourists. If you are looking for a lively party experience or a more low-key Greek Island experience, Mykonos is an island to visit!
Most known for its resort infused beaches and mountainous terrain, Corfu is a popular island off of Greece’s northwest coast in the Ionian Sea. Exploring the nearby waters by private boat or tour is a must while in Corfu. Corfu town is a quaint must-see location to visit where you can find traditional Venetian influences and delicious Greek food.
Naxos is the largest Greek Island of the Cyclades group. The city of Charos Naxos is at the heart of the island and is one of the most beautiful cities in all of the Cyclades Islands. A popular destination for tourists, this city is filled with traditional white houses and narrow streets that will give you an authentic Greek feel. The island is also known for its archeological sites such as Portara, the Venetian fortresses, and The Monastery of Panagia Drosiani.
This traditional Greek Island is home to lavish beaches and charming villages. The busiest region of Paros is Parikia, a business center and main port of the island. Around the circumference of the island, you can find countless beaches, fishing villages, and water activities. Tourists love the water-related, laid back atmosphere that Paros has to offer!

I cannot believe you are still offering tour for May onwards, collecting money from people, when you know these tours will not go ahead.

Thank you Barry for your review. Your booking is for August, not for May, and we are working hard right now to support clients for March departures. We hope everything will settle for August, but if it doesn't we would have a policy for August bookings. As for May departures, there are some destinations which are still open for business, and those destinations which are not, are being reviewed daily if not hourly. It is a difficult time for us and for the travel industry, but yes we are all still open for business, because without it we, our suppliers, hotels, airlines, tour leaders, coach tour companies would not be in business.

my clients loved the Agali house recommendation in Santorini. Thanks Sun Island Tours I'll be using this hotel again.
Hi Natalie, Thank you for your review, and your continued support. The Agali Houses is a lovely property in Firostefani, which is only a short walk from Fira Town, but even more beautiful and picturesque. It is a great property to keep recommending, but we will also always recommend the best available property in Greece to suit your client's specific requirements. We hope to look after your clients in the future. Kind regards, Zoe @ Sun Island Tours

We have just started the Balkan’s tour…
We have just started the Balkan’s tour ..Day 1 not picked up at the airport . Incurred cost of 40 Euro in taxi to hotel as per itinerary. Hotel Titania is a beautiful hotel but they never had our booking. Did next 6 hours ringing around Fez travel, travel zone and ended up ringing Ivana in Skopje. Couldn’t get in touch with Sunisland live chat Sydney as 5pm shut down ..a disgrace. She said Sunisland had made a terrible error and we we in the wrong hotel. I paid another 40 Euro to the Titania hotel to cover phone costs. We were then taxied to the Athenian Luxury Hotel which is a dive ..taxi fare another 7 Euros. The Athenian is out of town in a sex ridden, dodgy, graffiti area and is everything but luxury. This hotel is disgusting ..we are awaiting day 2 of our 16 days so will keep you posted.. in brief don’t take the risk with Sunisland ..I will personally go to Sydney to see the owner of this business .. he should be admonished.. I’m seeking 87 Euro refund immediately.
Date of experience : June 17, 2019
Dear Mr & Mrs Coupe, Firstly my sincere apologies, the hotel stay was our error. The Titania Hotel, which is the hotel listed on your voucher, is the general hotel we use for this tour. Our tour operator changed hotels for this departure, as there was a large group at the Titania Hotel, and had informed us. But by our error we didnt update your booking. I am so sorry that you had faced this issue on Day 1 of your tour, and will of course refund EUR 87. If you can email through your bank account details to our general email, the refund will be processed immediately. We will also be offering you a 50 minute spa treatment free of charge in Mykonos. The Atheneum Grand Hotel is a 4 star hotel which is used by many coach tour companies. With 4,974 verified ratings it has a score of 8.5 out of 10 on booking.com and 4.3 out of 5 on google. We will contact our ground supplier who will speak with the guide and hotel to ensure you enjoy your stay, and your tour throughout Greece and Croatia. As for the arrival transfer, the ground supplier has informed us that due to an accident in Athens there was a high level of unexpected traffic and unfortunately the driver arrived at the airport too late. To apologise for this, we are offering an immediate refund of your taxi to Athens, as well as a dinner in Belgium. If the transfer was met, this situation may not have arisen. I truly apologise for the error. This is not our standard practice and our staff and ground supplier have been made aware of the situation. I will also be contacting you directly now to see how we can further support you and appease the situation. Thank you for your feedback. Regards, John Polyviou General Manager

As a Travel consultant
As a Travel consultant, I have had pleasant experiences with Sun Island Tours as all the staff have been very helpful and willing to assist. The best way for me to recommend a company to customers is through experience and my customers have had great trips with them and I am looking forward to also being a customer on some upcoming trips I booked in June. If I can say one thing is that a good sign about a good experience is that I know if anything was to go wrong I would be able to help fix and assist the customer quickly with their great team!

the price quoted for a solo traveller…
the price quoted for a solo traveller is 3 times higher than twin share. how can the company justy this outrageous difference?
Date of experience : August 06, 2019
Dear Barbara, Thank you for your review but I dont believe it constitutes 1 star. The price we quoted for you is for high season. The from price listed on our website is based on twin share in low season. If you compare the high season twin price it is actually 50% more, not 300% more, which is in line with any companies single supplements. Hope this is clear. If you would like us to quote on a cheaper and lower season, please contact us. Thanks John @ Sun Island Tours

Would be great if SI had a live system…
Would be great if SI had a live system with a lot of their suppliers so we could provide clients with availsbilities and costings on the spot.
Hi Leigh, Thank you for your feedback. I agree and appreciate your comments. Whilst a reply to this would be a very lengthy conversation, I can assure you that we continue to take steps in offering live availability through our agent's only online booking system. In fact, we do offer over 100,000 hotels in Europe and the Middle East with live availability. As far as other services such as ferries, cruises and some tours are concerned, unfortunately, we are heavily reliant on our ground suppliers, and at times they don't have the systems in place to offer this. Having said that, I hope that within these constraints we were able to service your requests as efficiently as possible, and we thank you for your continued support. Kind regards, Zoe @ Sun Island Tours
Sun Island Tours - - Athens / Egypt
My local Agent arranged two Sun Island Tours (packages) for me - one in Athens: “Taste of Athens”, and one in Egypt: “This is Egypt”. 1. “Taste of Athens” (3 days), Local representative: Tour Greece The gentleman (Thanasis) + driver who escorted me from the Port of Piraeus (where I had just finished a cruise) to the Hermes hotel in Athens where I was staying, were so good and very well organized. Thanasis was friendly and gave me exactly all the information I needed to know in a short amount of time. The Acropolis Tour and new Museum was simply amazing. When the stay was over, the driver who escorted me from my hotel back to Athens airport, was equally as good; so polite and skilled with handling my luggage. THANK YOU – EFHARISTO! 2. “This is Egypt” (9 days), Local representative: South Sinai Travel This was such a nice adventure. I went from Cairo/Giza to Alexandria, back to Cairo, then onward to Luxor, then Aswan, then to Abu Simbel, and then back to Cairo. All the Tour Guides + drivers were really nice and friendly, and I was happy to finally go to Egypt because it is my heritage. I got to speak some Arabic which was nice. The Iberotel Luxor Hotel (in Luxor) is a lovely hotel, I stayed there one night before embarking on a Nile cruise. The breakfast was so yummy, and they had an elegant courtyard area outside the restaurant overlooking the scenery. The room was great too. I liked sailing on the Nile, that was really special. The name of the cruise ship was “Esmeralda”. I am glad that there were representatives who helped me check in at the airports within Egypt. THANK YOU - SHOOKRAN!

Greece: Walking in the Greek Islands
8 days, athens to santorini.
- Full itinerary
- Tour details
When someone says, “Let’s go to Greece!” the first images that come to mind are the sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean, white sugar-cube houses set high into the hills above the sea, and ancient sun-bleached ruins. And while these highlights are absolutely worth the trip, this eight-day odyssey will have you exploring the Greece many never see. You'll start by visiting Tinos, a sleepier island, relatively unknown to the masses that's renowned for the Church of the Annunciation, a Greek Orthodox pilgrimage site. From there sail to Naxos with its Venetian fortified mansions, cobbled alleys, and hilltop castle. From catamarans to kayaks and picturesque Byzantine churches to Citron distilleries, you’ll spend time learning more about the history of Ancient Greece and the melding of cultures through time.

Day 3 Naxos: The Cheese and Wine Trails

There is no better day in the Aegean than sailing around the Islands, jumping off to cool down, swimming in the azure water or snorkelling to search for fish and lost treasures. A trip to the Greek islands wouldn't be complete without a day out on a boat.

The Ultimate 7-Day Itinerary for Greece: From Ancient Ruins to Sun-Kissed Islands
By: Author Amanda OBrien
Posted on Last updated: 08/09/2024
Greece, situated in the Mediterranean, is a stunningly beautiful country. Its azure waters surrounding its hot terrain make it the ideal getaway for those longing to lounge on the beach, taking occasional soothing dips in the warm ocean.
But there’s more to Greece than just breathtaking scenery. It’s a land rich in history and culture, capable of captivating even the most world-weary traveler. The country’s museums rank among the most remarkable globally, and you don’t have to venture inside to soak up the heritage.
A simple walk along the cobblestone lanes offers a window into Greece’s past. This Greece 7 days itinerary will cover history and culture as well as beaches and beautiful blue water.
Additionally, Greece distinguishes itself from other hot and humid nations by experiencing a cold winter. If you’re not fond of the heat, you can choose to visit during the winter months for a different yet equally enchanting experience.
Things to Book Before You Leave Home Few things are more frustrating on vacation than missing out on that amazing hotel or tour because it is sold out. Here are our top things to book before your vacation. 🔱 Most Popular Tours in Greece: 1. Athens Acropolis Skip the Line Tour -my top pick 2. Athens Acropolis and Musem Skip the Line Tour 3. Athens Street Food Tour -don’t eat breakfast before 4. Santorini Private Caldera Sailing Trip -book to include sunset 🛏️ Where to Stay in Athens : 1. AthensWas -stylish boutique hotel 2. The Stanley Hotel -great value with a rooftop bar and pool
Here is my Greece 7 Days Itinerary designed to give first-time visitors a taste of this beautiful country.
Greece 7 Days Itinerary
To make the most of your trip to Greece, it’s good to have an outline of what you want to get up to. That way you won’t miss any of the sights you want to see, and you’ll be able to start picturing yourself there right this minute.
However, since making a detailed 7 day itinerary for your trip to Greece can drain the fun out of holiday planning, here’s a suggested plan for you to work from.
7 Day Greece Itinerary: Days 1 & 2 in Athens
Since it’s easiest to fly into Athens, starting your trip here is best. Athens is the site of many iconic ancient Greek monuments and temples. There are so many fantastic things to do in Athens.
This start to your vacation will be all about culture, history and beauty. And you’ll have lots of energy to go out in the evening. Athens is known for its fun and vibrant nightlife, particularly in the summer.
Day 1: Visit the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill
When you wake up on your first morning in Greece, set your sights on the Acropolis of Athens. Dating back to the 5th century BC, this hilltop temple monument is more than just a sight – it’s a collection of awe-inspiring landmarks that can easily occupy your entire morning as you explore its iconic wonders.
It’s highly recommended to take a guided tour of the Acropolis . Considering the vast area and the plethora of sites to see, a guided tour ensures you don’t miss any significant spots. Most terms will conveniently include your ticket for the Acropolis and provide access through the quickest entry line.
Situated atop a rugged outcrop overlooking Athens, the ancient citadel provides breathtaking views. The splendor of the Acropolis is further enhanced by the fact that the view is unspoiled by the modern cityscape below. The blend of ancient marvels and scenic beauty creates an unforgettable experience.
⇒ Pre book your skip the line ticket for the Acropolis
See the Parthenon
While at the Acropolis, visit the Parthenon, the most important remaining monument from classical Greece. It’s also world-renowned, and you’ll surely have heard of it many times. Be sure to take a few photos!
Marvel at the Acropolis Museum
Just a 10-minute walk down the hill you will find the museum dedicated to the Acropolis. This is a great place to go, with the incredible architecture fresh in your imagination. Also, it’s the perfect opportunity to find a little restaurant as you go.
⇒ Beat the Queue and pre-book your ticket for the Acropolis & Museum
Klepsidra Cafe is one of the best options in the area. Greek food is incredible, and you’ll surely find the perfect thing to energize you as you explore the Acropolis Museum.
After lunch, it is time to climb another one of Athen’s hills – Mount Lycabettus. At 227 meters tall, the summit of Lycabettus is the highest point in central Athens and has some fantastic views of the city and the Acropolis.
Walking up the hill to the top of Mount Lycabettus is relatively easy. But if you’re all walked out after spending the morning at the Acropolis take the easy-to-use cable car up and down the mountain.
At the top of the mountain, you’ll find a restaurant with great views and a classically Greek blue and white church St George.
After all that walking you’ve earned a drink. In the early evening, head to Bar Kepameio and enjoy a spritz. Kapameio owns a souvlaki place next door called Elvis, which has some of the best souvlakis in Athens. It is worth a visit as the souvlaki I enjoyed there was outstanding. Best of all you can place your order in Elvis and then enjoy your souvlaki at your table in the bar.

Day 2: Explore Athens through its cuisine
Taking a food tour is one of my favorite ways to explore a city, and Athens is an excellent place for a food tour! I took my food tour with Viator and it was wonderful. Our guide was local and very knowledgeable.
We did everything from a Greek honey tasting to visiting a Koulouri bakery (the delicious sesame rings you will see all over Greece) and visiting Athens Central Market for some fantastic lamb that had been cooking in the sand for hours.
Whether you take a food tour or not I would recommend a trip to Athens Central Market – particularly at lunchtime. Many locals visit to buy their seafood, and there is a great atmosphere. Plus it is home to restaurants and cafes.
Once you finish your food tour you won’t want to eat for a little while. It is the perfect time to explore the lovely little neighborhood of Anafiotika. This small area sits behind some of the key tourist sites in Athens. It was built in the 1800s when King Otto 1 wanted Athens to be rebuilt.
Builders were brought in from the Cycladic island of Anafi. While they were working on rebuilding Athens, they built a replica of their island near the Acropolis. Anafiotika means little Anafi. Only 45 buildings remain today, but it is a lovely neighborhood for a wander.
Then, continue to walk off your food tour by visiting the neighborhood of Plaka, home to cute streets and some great shopping.
Hopefully by the time dinner rolls around you’ll be ready to eat again. I highly recommend Seychelles. Loved by locals, you’ll find unique twists on popular Greek dishes. It’s located in the Metaxourgeio neighborhood. Don’t forget to book ahead or you won’t get a table.
Boutique Hotels in Athens
Stay close to the Acropolis in the very stylish AthensWas boutique hotel. The AthensWas boutique hotel has fantastic views of the Acropolis (ask for a room on one of the higher floors) – particularly from the terrace – and it is in an excellent neighborhood with loads of great restaurants and shops.
➡️ Check Availability and Prices for AthensWas
If you love fantastic interiors, then check out the New Hotel . And this Athens boutique hotel has a spa complete with a hammam, jacuzzi, and treatment room. Even the standard rooms are large at 20 to 23 square meters and they have a pillow menu.
➡️ Check Availability and Prices for the New Hotel
The Stanley Hotel has a fantastic location next to Metaxourgeio Station, making it easy to get everywhere in Athens. They also have a great rooftop pool and bar with views of the Acropolis. The rooms are a little on the small side, but you won’t spend much time in them with that view on the rooftop.
➡️ Check Availability and Prices for The Stanley Hotel
7 Days Greece Itinerary: Days 3, 4 & 5 in Santorini
Now it’s time to head off to the Greek islands to get more sun, sand and beautiful sights. These stunning islands are world-renowned as a dreamy destination.
Santorini is one of the most picturesque places in the world. The white buildings are set off perfectly by the deep blue Aegean sea below them.
While your days on this island can consist mainly of coffee shops, gelateria, restaurants, and bars (yes, the food and drink is that good), a little sightseeing can go a long way. Especially when it’s coupled with some beautiful swimming and tanning opportunities.

Day 3: Morning Walk between Thira and Oia and Sunset Santorini Wine Tour
The walk between Thira and Oia is about 10 kilometres so it will take 2-2 1/2 hours. It is a stunning path along the caldera. You will head up and down quite a bit, so wear sensible shoes.
➡️ Book a guided walk between Thira and Oia
Did you know that for centuries, the economy of the Greek Island of Santorini was built on wine? I was shocked to discover that this was the case. When I first heard about wineries in Santorini and its famous assyrtiko grape, I thought wine from such a warm climate couldn’t possibly taste good. I am delighted to tell you that I was completely wrong.
The perfect way to experience the wine of Santorini is through a guided tour which includes a driver. Several companies run wine tours on the island.
Sunset wine tours generally start around 4 p.m. and finish about 8 pm. Most tours will pick up and drop off guests at their hotels or a spot close to their accommodation.
Each wine tour company works with several wineries. The majority of tours visit three wineries. Visits include a tasting (of course) and a generous platter of local delicacies. The food served on the tour is sufficient to cover dinner.

Day 4: Day of Exploring and a Sunset Cruise
Spend the day getting to know the city by foot. Meander down the winding lanes and pop into the cafes and shops you come across.
In the afternoon, join a small-group luxury catamaran cruise. You’ll see more of the island, swim in volcanic hot springs, and snorkel in the clear blue waters.
Day 5: Relax
I am officially giving you a day off! This is a day to spend either by your pool in the hotel or head to some of Santorini’s famous black beaches for a day of rest and relaxation.
Boutique Hotels in Santorini
On my first trip to Santorini, I stayed at the Anteliz Suites in Fira and absolutely loved it. This charming Santorini boutique hotel is perched on the top of Fira. As such it has the most amazing views of the Santorini sunset. And a large deck area designed to help you to enjoy that view.
➡️ Check Prices and Availability for Anteliz Suites
In Oia, Canaves Oia Hotel is the whitewashed Santorini hotel of your dreams. The hotel is cut into the old caves and has a minimalist design. Plus there is a gorgeous pool with a swim-up bar.
➡️ Check Prices and Availability for Canaves Oia Hotel
On my second trip to Santorini, I stayed in Oia in the north of the island. Mr. and Mrs. White Santorini is a charming boutique hotel on the caldera with fantastic views. It is very modern in design but combined with the island’s traditional style.
We stayed in a mezzanine room that had a bathroom and sofa bed on the mezzanine. But the highlight was the massive terrace in the room with views straight out onto the caldera and the Santorini sunset.
The design theme is black and white which works very well on this often blue-and-white and oh-so-bright island. Breakfast is served above the main reception and also provides fantastic views. The buffet includes hot food, and I highly recommend the spanokopitas. Greek or traditional-style omelets are also available.
The hotel has a pool area and a second area for a smaller pool and jacuzzi. It is a slight maze of rooms, arches, and outdoor corridors, but this gives an excellent sense of privacy. The staff were very friendly – particularly at breakfast where they remembered our coffee order each morning!
There are quite a few boutique hotels within Oia, but they all looked like they had pretty small rooms and no full-size pool. Plus Oia can get quite loud. Mr and Mrs White was the perfect mix of being close to the action but removed enough for privacy.

Greece Vacation Itinerary: Days 6 & 7 in Mykonos
Next is a few days in one of Europe’s most fun summer party destinations. This is an island where you can sleep in late. There’s no need to feel guilty about not making the most of your days, as your nights will get the attention.
Day 6: Take a Delos and Rhenia Islands Boat Trip
After you wake up late and have a lovely lazy morning, spend the afternoon exploring the nearby islands . It’s a beautiful way to spend a day, especially since you can sip on unlimited drinks and start your Mykonos buzz before watching the sunset over the island.
Next, head to Lola’s Bar-Cafe to kick the night off with a delicious cocktail. The bar has a warm and welcoming atmosphere; if you go alone, you’ll leave with friends.

Day 7: Party at Paradise and Super Paradise Beach
These extremely popular beaches will have you feeling the party spirit. They might not be your traditional idea of paradise, but they offer a great time.
During the day, enjoy basking on the beach. But it’s during the night when things heat up. Bars play loud music that carries across the sand, and massive clubs boast international DJs and almost unending hours.
Boutique Hotels on Mykonos
Boheme Mykonos is carved into a mountain with views of the sea. Enjoying relaxing on the sundeck by the pool. They are right next to the bar and restaurant so you don’t need to move to be fed and watered.
➡️ Check Prices and Availability for Boheme Mykonos
Rocabella Mykonos is slightly more upmarket and its rooms come with private terraces. The outdoor pool is lined by white rocks with lots of day beds. And there is a spa with an enticing range of treatments on offer.

Greece crackdown on tourists as cruise ship passengers face €20 charge to visit islands in peak summer season
- Sayan Bose , Foreign News Reporter

GREECE has announced plans to crackdown on visitors flocking to its sandy beaches in a bid to tackle over-tourism.
Authorities are set to impose a €20 tourist tax on cruise ship passengers visiting the islands of Santorini and Mykonos during the peak summer season.
The government also plans to regulate the number of cruise ships that arrive on its islands, while new rules to protect the environment and tackle water shortages are also being plotted.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said: "Cruise shipping has burdened Santorini and Mykonos and this is why we are proceeding with interventions.
" Greece does not have a structural overtourism problem. Some of its destinations have a significant issue during certain weeks or months of the year, which we need to deal with."
Part of the revenues from the cruise shipping tax will be returned to local communities to be invested in infrastructure, Mitsotakis said.

Anti-tourism fury floods Europe as locals vow 'guerrilla action'
Greece relies heavily on tourism, the main driver of the country's economy which is still recovering from a decade-long crisis that wiped out a fourth of its output.
Last year, a record 32.7million people visited Greece breaking previous records.
However, some of its most popular destinations, including Santorini, risk being ruined by mass tourism.
Some 800 cruise ships brought 1.3 million passengers to the island in 2023, severely impacting the few thousand local residents.

Greek authorities also plan to suspend all construction licences on hotel and holiday rentals in Santorini’s caldera zone , where hordes of tourists pose for sunset photos.
Footage of the picture-perfect island showed hundreds of tourists clashing for sunset selfies.
Hundreds were seen queuing up in narrow walkways to reach the clifftop of the village - a short walk that can now take more than 20 minutes because of overcrowding.
It's left locals upset at the overcrowding issues tourism has caused.
Local resident Onur Kilic, 28, told iNews : "Too many people come to Santorini and they leave rubbish behind.
"It's hard for locals because we live here. The roads are too crowded and the traffic is much worse; it’s bad for the environment and the cost of everything is out of control, locals cannot pay as prices have gone up."
Protesters have called for curbs on tourism, as in other popular holiday destinations in Europe , including Spain ,
Anti-tourist measures sweeping hotspots
A WAVE of anti-tourist measures are being implemented across Europe to curb mass tourism in popular holiday hotspots.
Overcrowding has become the main problem in many sunny destinations, with authorities trying to find a solution to keep tourists and locals happy.
Officials have attempted to reduce the impact of holidaymakers by implementing additional taxes on tourists , or banning new hotels .
Earlier this year Venice became the first city in the world to charge an entry fee for holidaymakers after it started charging day-trippers €5 (£4.30) if visiting the historical Italian centre.
It was followed by an area in Barcelona which resorted to removing a well-used bus route from Apple and Google Maps to stop crowds of tourists from using the bus.
Meanwhile, San Sebastián in the north of Spain, limited the maximum number of people on guided visits to 25 to avoid congestion, noise, nuisance and overcrowding.
The city has already banned the construction of new hotels.
The Spanish government has allowed restaurants to charge customers more for sitting in the shade in Andalucia.
Benidorm has introduced time restrictions, as swimming in the sea between midnight and 7am could cost a whopping £1,000.
The Canary Islands are also considering adopting measures to regulate the number of visitors - and charge tourists a daily tax.
Greece has already enforced a tourist tax during the high season (from March to October) with visitors expected to pay from €1 (£0.86) to €4 (£3.45) per night, depending on the booked accommodation.
Officials in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia want to introduce a fee for travellers to remind people to be courteous during their trips.
