Safari is a great web browser, but there's a reason why Google Chrome has the largest market share . Thankfully, as long as you're running iOS 14 , iPadOS 14 , or higher, you can set any third-party browser as the default on your iPhone or iPad.

First, open the "Settings" app. If you've lost it in a sea of icons, use Apple's built-in  Spotlight Search  to find the application.

In the Settings menu, locate the section for the browser you'd like to set as your default. For example, navigate to Settings > Chrome to set Google Chrome as your default web browser.

If the third-party browser has been updated to support Apple's default browser switching feature, you will find a "Default Browser App" option in its settings. Tap it.

Next, you'll see a list of every web browser app installed on your device that supports the default browser feature. Tap the name of the browser you'd like to use as your default.

After that, tap the "Back" button once and exit "Settings." From now on, whenever you tap a web address link, it will open in the browser app you chose.

Note that, at the time of writing, rebooting your iPhone or iPad will reset the default setting . It's not clear yet if this was designed to reset or it's a bug.

How to set Safari as your default browser

To set Safari as the default web browser on your computer, you need to use the macOS System Preferences.

Click the Apple Menu icon

In the top-left corner of your Mac screen, click the small Apple icon. It will expand a list of System options.

Click the "System Preferences" item

One of the menu items is "System Preferences", click it to be able to configure your system.

Click the "General" item

The System Preferences window has lots of options; find the General item and click it to open your system's general options.

Your default web browser

On the General System Preferences window you will see the option labelled Default web browser:

If you are trying to set Safari as your default web browser, it means you probably have something else currently set as your default (such as Google Chrome - in the example screenshot above).

Choose Safari from the list

Click on the Select list to show all the web browsers you have installed; from there you will see Safari . To set Safari as your default web browser, simply choose it from the list.

You will now see that macOS has it set as your default web browser for this computer:

Close the Preferences window

Now that you have selected your default browser you can close the System Prefernces window and continue using your computer.

In some countries, you may be asked to choose your default browser. You can change your default browser anytime.

Set Chrome as your default web browser

Important: If you don't have Google Chrome on your computer yet, first download and install Chrome .

• To make sure the change applied to the correct file types, review the list below the "Set default" button.
• To exit, close the settings window.

To easily open Chrome later, add a shortcut to your taskbar:

• On your computer, open Chrome.
• At the bottom, in the Windows taskbar, right-click  Chrome .
• Click Pin to taskbar .

Under DMA probe, Apple tweaks design of EU browser choice screens, expands app default settings

Apple continues to adjust its approach to compliance with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA): Announcing another batch of changes Thursday, the iPhone maker showed off redesigned browser choice screens it said would be coming to iOS and iPadOS “later this year”, with version 18 of its mobile software platforms.

The tweaked browser choice screens will provide users with a toolbar on the left-hand of the list where they can select a browser directly from the choice screen which will then be pinned to the top of the list as they scroll through the full list of options.

In another change, users will be required to scroll through the full list of available browsers — but these still be the top 12 browsers available in their country displayed in a random order. There will also be slightly more information displayed per browser — with Apple pulling in the app subtitle from the App Store product page.

Once the user confirms their selection if they have picked a default browser that’s already on their phone the app will open immediately and they will be shown a notification confirming it’s now their default. The browser’s app icon will also automatically replace Safari in the dock (if they had Safari in that slot).

If the user selects a default browser they don’t already have on their device it will automatically start downloading at the moment of confirmation — and, once the download is complete, it will open automatically with a confirmation notification it’s now the default.

Another, potentially bigger, change is that the choice screen will likely be displayed more often as Apple will show it on every device where an iOS or iPadOS user has Safari as the default — rather than just once per user.

Currently, once a user has updated to iOS 17.4, the choice screen is only shown the first time the user open Safari on their device. But once users update to iOS 18 — and if Safari is their default browser — they will be shown the choice screen again. If they migrate to a new device still with Safari as their default they’ll be served the choice again.

Additionally, Apple has announced changes to default apps for EU users, including a new centralized setting where they will be able to view a list of all the defaults available.

In further updates to its mobile platforms, the bulk of which are slated for later this year, Apple said it will expand the list to include new default settings for dialing phone numbers, sending messages, translating text, navigation, managing passwords, keyboards and call spam filters. (Defaults for navigation and translation apps are penciled in for Spring 2025.)

Later this year Apple is also set to allow more of its default apps to be deletable by EU users — including the App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari.

It said users will be able to re-download any defaults they delete from the App Store or in the app installation section setting (in case, presumably they no longer have Apple’s store on their device).

The changes — the bulk of which are set to arrive later this year (though Apple wouldn’t be nailed down to an exact launch date) — look intended to respond to criticism its current browser choice screen design makes it too hard for users to switch away from its Safari browser and that it’s failing to meet broader user choice obligations under the DMA.

As a designated gatekeeper under the pan-EU regulation, Apple must open up its mobile ecosystem in a variety of ways the EU hopes will boost competition and consumer choice — under threat of stiff penalties (starting at up to 10% of global annual turnover) for non-compliance.

The bloc opened its first DMA investigations on Apple in March , which included scrutiny of its browser choice screen design and wider user choice obligations. Since then the European Commission, which enforces the DMA, has issued preliminary findings on another Apple probe — related to anti-steering rules on Apple’s App Store. But there’s been no public word on the choice obligation investigation.

Apple hopes this new bundle of changes will be sufficient to resolve the EU’s enforcement without the risk of a full-blown non-compliance finding (and the associated risk of a hefty fine).

The DMA gives the Commission leeway to accept remedies proposed by gatekeepers to resolve concerns without having to resort to its full enforcement toolbox as the bloc is keen for the regulation to deliver quick results.

Back in March when the Commission announced its first DMA probes on Apple, it said it was concerned about compliance with DMA obligations to “(i) enable end users to easily uninstall any software applications on iOS, (ii) easily change default settings on iOS and (iii) prompt users with choice screens which must effectively and easily allow them to select an alternative default service, such as a browser or search engine on their iPhones”.

“The Commission is concerned that Apple’s measures, including the design of the web browser choice screen, may be preventing users from truly exercising their choice of services within the Apple ecosystem, in contravention of Article 6(3) of the DMA,” it added at the time.

Since then the EU has designated iPadOS as another “core platform service” under the DMA — which is why Apple’s changes apply to both its mobile platforms.

Briefing journalists on its latest DMA tweaks, Apple said it believes the changes will address the EC’s concerns. It said it’s taken feedback from stakeholders and couched the iterative process as part of an ongoing compliance dialog.

Lea Zuber, a spokeswoman for the Commission, confirmed the EU’s choice obligation investigation is still open on Apple. “There are no remedies in the DMA but the gatekeepers and Commission are working together on compliance solutions,” she added.

Apple tweaking how default browsers are selected in EU

As well as updating default browser choices, EU users will have more control over default apps such as Messages, Photos, and Camera

In response to the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which also led to third-party app stores, Apple is increasing the options it gives users over default apps. Users in the region are already prompted to choose a default browser, although developers of alternative browsers still found reason to complain .

As before, the first time a user opens Safari on their iPhone or iPad , they will be shown a list of the most popular browsers in their region, and can select any of them. Also as before, the list will be presented in a random order, and will not favor Safari.

What's new is that as well as the title of the browser, Apple's list will show the app's subtitle from the App Store . Plus instead of having to tap to go into a browser listing and select it there, selection is now a tap on that first list.

However, the user will have to scroll through the whole list before they can make their selection.

Assuming that they do not choose Safari, once they have made their selection, Apple will download the new browser if it isn't already installed. Users will see the download progress right in the list of default browsers, and when installed, it will open.

Plus, if Safari is currently in either the Dock or the first page of the user's home screen, it will be automatically replaced by their new choice.

Safari users will be prompted again

Apple is also changing when users will get prompted to consider an alternative browser. As well as the first time they launch Safari on, say, their iPhone, users will be prompted again the first time they open it on their iPad.

If a user in the EU has already gone through the list and chosen Safari, then after the update that adds the new features, they will be prompted again.

Similarly, if they migrate from one iPhone or iPad to another. If Safari was the default on the original machine, then the next time the user opens it on the new device, they will be prompted once more.

Improving all default apps

"For users in the EU, iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will also include a new Default Apps section in Settings that lists defaults available to each user," says Apple in its updated developer documentation . "In future software updates, users will get new default settings for dialing phone numbers, sending messages, translating text, navigation, managing passwords, keyboards, and call spam filters."

The option to change the default translation and navigation apps will not be available until an update in 2025.

Apple has not said precisely when the rest of these features will be released, but it is to be in an iOS update later in 2024. And alongside more options for choosing default apps, there will also be the ability to delete more of the stock Apple ones.

Specifically, users in the EU will be able to entirely delete:

Should a user change their mind, all but one of these apps can be redownloaded from the App Store. The exception is the App Store itself, which will have to be reinstalled via Settings.

Apple will soon let iPhone and iPad users in the European Union choose default apps for phone calls, messaging, keyboards, password managers, and more. These options will be available later this year in a new “Default Apps” section in Settings, according to an update on Thursday .

In the spring of next year, Apple says it will also let users set default navigation, translation apps, and call spam filter apps. Along with these new options, iPhone users in the EU will add the ability to delete the App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari apps. The only apps Apple won’t let users delete are Settings and Phone.

Some small changes are coming to Apple’s browser choice screen in the EU that pops up when a user first opens Safari on their iPhone, allowing users to install alternate browsers like Firefox, Chrome, or DuckDuckGo.

After the update arrives, Apple will require any EU users with Safari set as their default to scroll through the entire list of default browsers before selecting an option and will also display the browser’s App Store caption on the choice screen. Additionally, developers of the browsers listed will get access to more data about the performance of the choice screen.

Apple already lets users in the EU change their default browser and email app. It has also started opening up the iPhone to third-party app marketplaces, with the Epic Games Store opening on the platform last week.

Make Safari your default web browser on Mac

Safari is the default browser when you first set up your Mac. If you accidentally change your default browser or just want to change it back to Safari, you can easily adjust your default.

Open Desktop & Dock settings for me

Click the pop-up menu next to “Default web browser” on the right, then choose Safari.

Some apps open web pages in a browser other than your default browser.

How to change the default apps

In the Settings app on your Windows device, select Apps  > Default Apps , or use the following shortcut:

Default Apps

To change a default app, you can do either of the following:

Set a default for a file type or link type In the search bar, type the file extension or protocol you wish to change, such as  .txt . Select the corresponding result from the list that appears. Then, choose an app from the options provided to open files of that type

Set defaults for applications  Select an app to see what file types or link types it can open. If you want to change something, select the file or link type, then choose your preferred app

How to configure Microsoft Edge as the default browser

From  Default apps , under Set defaults for applications , select  Microsoft Edge

Next to Make Microsoft Edge your default browser , select  Set default

Apple to update eu browser options, make more apps deletable.

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Apple will change how users choose browser options in the European Union, add a dedicated section for changing default apps, and make more apps deletable, the company said on Thursday.

The iPhone maker came under pressure from regulators to make changes after the EU's sweeping Digital Markets Act took effect on March 7, forcing it to offer mobile users the ability to select from a list of available web browsers on a "choice screen" the first time they open Safari.

In an update later this year, Apple users will be able to select a default browser directly from the choice screen after going through a mandatory list of options.

A randomly ordered list of 12 browsers per EU country will be shown to the user with short descriptions, and the chosen one will be automatically downloaded, Apple said. The choice screen will also be available on iPads through an update later this year.

Apple released a previous update in response to the new rules in March, but browser companies criticized the design of its choice screen, and the Commission opened an investigation on March 25 saying it suspected that the measures fell short of effective compliance.

"We welcome Apple's updated choice screen, particularly as it precedes the upcoming iPhone launches," Andrew Frost Moroz, founder of Aloha browser, told Reuters.

"For those less familiar with us, the description will highlight these benefits, and fewer taps to start browsing will enhance the user experience and benefit third-party browsers," he said.

Apple said it has been in dialogue with the European Commission and believes the new changes will address regulators' concerns.

The Commission said on Thursday it will monitor the effectiveness of the solutions in achieving the objective of the DMA and will decide on the next steps in the open case.

It also plans to introduce a dedicated area for default apps where a user will be able to set defaults for messaging, phone calls, spam filters, password managers and keyboards.

Users will also be able to delete certain Apple-made apps such as App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos and Safari. Only Settings and Phone apps would not be deletable.
