Last Updated on: Dec 24, 2016

About this blog: We have been exploring Darjeeling ever since we started travelling. We have also blogged about this place for long. This Darjeeling Travel Guide was written sometime back. We have now updated this Darjeeling travel guide with all the latest information and required to plan a Darjeeling trip. A land of breathtaking beauty surrounded by rolling green tea plantations along with the majestic Kanchenjunga ranges towering above the skyline has earned it the moniker of Queen of Hills .

Darjeeling Trip Plan | About Darjeeling

Darjeeling is located at an altitude of about 6710 feet and is one of the most beautiful destinations in India. The name Darjeeling came from two Tibetan words ‘ dorje ’ meaning and ‘ ling ‘ meaning land. So Darjeeling literally means ‘the land of thunderbolt’.

Previous to its acquisition by the British East India Company in 1835, Darjeeling was a part of Sikkim (Sikkim was an independent kingdom then) and also of Nepal for a brief period of time.

Agni and Amrita in Darjeeling

During February 1829, a British Officer Caption Llyod spent a few days in Darjeeling. The place was then known as the “Old Gorkha Station of Darjeeling”. The place was nothing like what it is today. It was a deserted region with dense forests and mountains. Caption Llyod realized that Darjeeling can become a great sanatorium or health resort for the British officers.

What is the Best Time to Visit Darjeeling?

Usually, Darjeeling has two main peak seasons for tourists – March to May and October to November. This is the time when Darjeeling gets the maximum footfall of tourists. When you want to plan your Darjeeling trip, entirely depends on what you want to experience at Darjeeling. Here I would mention briefly about the seasons in Darjeeling.

March to May (Spring and Summer)

This is one of the best times to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasantly cool. After all, one of the main reasons for planning a Darjeeling trip is to beat the summer heat in the plains. The sky also remains clear giving a clear view of the Kanchenjunga ranges. But this is also a peak tourist season and Darjeeling will be full of local tourists.

March and April is the spring season and also the blooming season of rhododendrons.

June to September (Monsoon)

Monsoon usually starts by mid-June and lasts until September. During the monsoon, there are chances of landslides and some of the roads might be closed due to rains. Darjeeling, however, looks immensely beautiful and romantic during the rains, though you won’t get any mountain views as the weather remains cloudy most of the time. Also, tourism is low at this time and you get to see an uncrowded and relatively serene Darjeeling.

Honestly, monsoon is one of our favourite times to visit Darjeeling . We get rooms at cheaper rates, the roads are empty and the mist and clouds that envelope the roads make Darjeeling completely mesmerizing.

Darjeeling in monsoon

October to November (Autumn)

Autumn is also a good time to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasant, the nature is vibrant and the skies are clear. You would get great views of the snow-covered peaks during this time. Bur again, this is a peak season and Darjeeling will be full of tourists, both local and international.

December to February (Winter)

Winter in Darjeeling is extremely cold and the higher altitudes of experience snowfall in December. Tiger Hill, located only 11 km from Darjeeling also experiences snowfall during the winter. Darjeeling gets fewer tourists during this time. If you plan to visit Darjeeling during the winter, do carry woolens with you.

Winter is our favourite time for Darjeeling tour. We love to enjoy the winters of hill stations and Darjeeling never disappoints us in this matter. Also, Darjeeling oranges are quite famous and we get that during the wintertime.

Having said these, you cannot really predict the weather on the hills. At one time, it is sunny and bright and in the next moment, it can become cloudy and foggy.

How to Reach Darjeeling?

The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport and the nearest broad gauge railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). I have mentioned broad-gauge railways because you can reach Darjeeling from NJP by the famous toy train.

From NJP, you will get both shared jeeps as well as rented vehicles to reach Darjeeling. From Bagdogra Airport, you will get rented cabs to reach Darjeeling. Shared jeeps are also available from Siliguri Main Bus Stand towards Darjeeling. Buses are also available from Siliguri towards Darjeeling, but I would recommend you to travel by the shared sumos instead of buses.

Pro Tip: If you are coming from abroad, you will need some sort of a visa that can be applied for online, or at the embassy. For example, The India evisa for Canada citizens is available online.

Darjeeling is a small hilly town, but there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling that can be accessed by travelling a short distance. Darjeeling town is small, but Darjeeling district spans across 3,000 sq km. While there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling and several attractions around the town, you can also visit Kurseong and Kalimpong, two other hill stations that are also quite beautiful and charming. Here I have discussed some of the must-visit tourist attractions in Darjeeling.

1. Tiger Hill

Sunrise from Tiger Hill Darjeeling

I personally feel that a Darjeeling trip can never be completed without watching the sunrise at Tiger Hill . Located at the highest point in Darjeeling at an altitude of 2,590 m, Tiger Hill is located about 11 km from Darjeeling town. If you visit Tiger Hill in the day, it is just another viewpoint and you will hardly see any tourist there. But early in the morning, the place is full of a long queue of cars and people waiting for the sun to rise. Tiger Hill is now internationally famous for its magnificent sunrise view above the Kanchenjunga and other eastern Himalayan ranges.

There is a watchtower at Tiger Hill from where you will get a sweeping view of the mountain ranges.  It is an amazing experience to see the first rays of sun falling on the snow-clad ranges of the Kanchenjunga and Everest. The sky gradually changes colour from golden yellow to orange as the sun rises up the horizon.

The best time to get clear views of sunrise is during autumn and winter. But the weather in Darjeeling can be quite unpredictable and a sudden cloud can totally obstruct the sunrise view. Even otherwise, Tiger Hill is a great place to visit in Darjeeling to soak in the Himalayan beauty.

2. Batasia Loop and War Memorial

Gorkha War Memorial at Batasia Loop

Batasia Loop is located on the Hill Cart Road and is about 5 km from Darjeeling town and is one of the major attractions of your Darjeeling trip . You can get a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga ranges and the entire landscape from here. The War Memorial is located at the centre of the Batasia Loop. The War Memorial was opened in 1995 to pay homage to the Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Just in the middle, there is a 3-metre bronze statue of a Gorkha soldier paying homage. Outside the Batasia Loop, there is a small market area selling curios, bags, hats, and other decorative items. You can visit Batasia Loop after a trip to the Tiger Hill to watch the sunrise.

A number of shops are located in the Mall area including tea bars, curio shop, book shops and more. You can stroll around the Mall leisurely or else simply sit on the bench and see Darjeeling come alive in front of you. Horse ride is also available around the Mall at a prefixed rate.

There are a few important places to visit around Darjeeling Mall. You can take a walk around the Mall Road and visit a few of the important and heritage places in Darjeeling. The original monastery was built in the year 1765 by the Lama Dorje Rinzing and it was destroyed in 1815 during the Gorkha invasion. Later the Mahakal Temple was built at the place and the monastery was rebuilt at about 1.5 km downhill from the Chowrasta.

What are the Best Places to eat in Darjeeling Trip?

Breakfast platter at Keventers

Darjeeling has a unique mixture of Bengali, Nepali and Tibetan population. This is reflected well in the food and cuisine of Darjeeling. Added to this is the English influence. So overall, food in Darjeeling is simply something that we can die for.

Delicious and crisp English breakfast is quite common in Darjeeling. Keventers and Glenarys are just the places to have a proper English breakfast. Bacon, sausages, omelettes, eggs with sunny side up, sandwiches along with fresh Darjeeling Tea – who can say no to such food? For the health-conscious, the oil can be a turn-off though.

Momo

Darjeeling is also famous for momos, thukpas and Tibetan and Nepali dishes. There are restaurants serving Indian and Continental cuisines. In short, you will not be disappointed in Darjeeling regarding food!

For detailed information, you can read our article on the best places to eat in Darjeeling .

Shopping in Darjeeling Trip | Darjeeling Travel Guide

Habeeb Mullick and Sons at Chowrasta

Darjeeling, like most of the hill stations, is a shopper’s paradise. And one of my favourite thing to do in Darjeeling trip is window shopping! These days, you will get almost everything in Darjeeling town. However, you would probably want to buy Darjeeling Tea, antiques and jewellery, handicrafts and curio, woolen from Darjeeling.

Some of the popular handicraft items that you can buy from Darjeeling includes Tibetan masks, Thangkas, Khukris (curved Gorkha knives having decorative handles), curios and traditional jewelleries and showpieces. Stoles, woollen sweaters, jackets, caps and pashmina shawls are also widely sold.

There are many old shops and boutique shops at either side of the Nehru Road leading up to the Mall.  Nepal Curio House is one of our favourite places to hunt curio items, masks and thangkas. A Biswa Bangla outlet has also opened at Nehru Road that sells Bengal handicraft items. Another place that I would like to mention is Das Studio . You will get photography items and some old and rare photographs of Darjeeling and the mountains here. Check out the old Darjeeling postcards here.

Das Studio Darjeeling - Travel Guide

Darjeeling Mall is also dotted with a number of shops. I would like to mention about Oxford Book Stores, Habeeb Mullick & Sons (one of the best places for curios), Golden Tips and Nathmull’s at Chowrasta.

Mall Road has temporary shops with hawkers selling woollen and dress items. Bargain well when buying from these markets.

Darjeeling Toy Train Souvenir

Chowk Bazar at lower Darjeeling is a bustling market where you can get any types of household items, clothing items, bags, footwear, grocery and spices. It is infact the local market of Darjeeling town. Prices are relatively cheaper at Chowk Bazar, but I cannot guarantee the quality for items like dresses, shoes and bags.

If you want to buy authentic Tibetan handicrafts, then you should head towards the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre off the Lebong Cart Road. You will get handmade Tibetan carpets, scarves, clothes, handicrafts, thangkas and many more made by the local artisans.

Wonderful post! This article is really helpful for travelers. I heard about Darjeeling that is a beautiful place in India. I am planning to go to Darjeeling this December. can I see snowfall in December, and what can I do with my family in Darjeeling.

Hi Akansha! Thank you for your comment. Yes, Darjeeling is quite beautiful, but you will probably not get snowfall in Darjeeling itself. You might have to go to Sandakphu. And yes, you can travel with your parents to Darjeeling.

Tanvi

Since childhood I’ve witnessed the gradual change in climate, education, culture, society, economy, politics and religions, and recently a bit of business. And when I take the flight retrospectively in introspective mood,I feel sad to land back momentarily. But when I see the flood of tourists with a lot of excitement and sunny faces and the depiction of Darjeeling, my aesthetic sense gets rejuvenated. Salute to the blog writer for the concern shown for sanitation and request to the upcoming tourists not to litter. Welcome for further minute details.

Thank you so much for the comment. Would love to discuss with you about Darjeeling more if given a chance. Do keep in touch!

i was planning to stay at Darjeeling for December for at least a month. i was thinking of renting a house since i have work from home option. Wanted to check is it possible to do so ? how much is the rent ? and do we have steady internet ? Would you be kind to respond to the above if you know about it ?

Hello Haneefa! Well, I do not have much information about renting a house in Darjeeling. But I am sure you will get one. You can check out Classic Guest House or airbnb for the same. At Darjeeeling, you will get a steady internet. No issues with that. Hope this helps. 🙂

Ashini

This is so beautiful! You make me wanna go Darjeeling all the more. Just checking, is Darjeeling safe for solo travelers? Also where’s the best place to stay for female solo travelers? And from NJP to Darjeeling what’s the best mode of transportation for one person?

Hello Ashini! Thank you for stopping by! Darjeeling is quite safe for solo travellers. The best mode of transportation from NJP to Darjeeling for one is to take a shared jeep. otherwise you can reach Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand at Siliguri and take a bus to Darjeeling. You will also get shared cabs from there. If you want a bit more comfort, you can check wizzride as well. Revolver is a good place to stay in Darjeeling for solo travellers. Pahari Soul Homestay is also good. There are a few backpackers hostel in Darjeeling as well. You can check them as well!

Prepare to meet animals like the Red Panda, Snow Leopards, and the threatened Himalayan Wolf. Additionally, you can visit the Mountain Institute and gain some mountaineering advice.

Watching Sunrise

One of the best activities in Darjeeling and Gangtok is hiking. Until you have seen the sunrise at Tiger Hill, your journey is fruitless. That view is truly magnificent, with the way the sunshine catches those snow-covered peaks of Kanchenjunga and casts them in gorgeous hues. The opportunities for adventure and pleasure this place offer, will give you the time of your life.

Exploring Tea Gardens

One of the best things to do in Darjeeling is to visit a tea plantation. Even though the Darjeeling tea gardens are well-known around the world, you should visit them in the Dooars to experience their expansive beauty and have a cup of relaxing Darjeeling Tea. Particularly in this tea valley, the lush, manicured bushes are an incredible sight that you won't soon forget.

Visiting the Monastery

You can find a stunning and well-known monastery in Kalimpong, Darjeeling, called Zang Dhok Palri Phodang. As the repository for the numerous priceless manuscripts that were transported into India during the tragic invasion of Tibet in 1959, the monastery is of utmost importance. You must include a visit to this serene refuge on your list of things to do in Darjeeling. The monastery iideal n for those looking for a quiet place to meditate.

Adventurous Things to Do

Darjeeling Package also includes a list of adventurous things to do in Darjeeling for the ease of the adventure-lovers:

Paragliding

Tandem paragliding is what it is called when a guide joins you as you fly. In the separate safety harness, both you and the tour leader will be securely fastened. You only need to relax and take it all in since the guide will have entire control over the flight. When the guide yells, "Go," you only need to run a short distance before jumping out of the edge of the cliff you climbed up to do the paragliding.

Whitewater Rafting

The best adventure sport is White Water River rafting, which is very well-liked in Darjeeling. Two rivers, the Teesta and Rangeet, rush through the Himalayan ranges and produce enchanted white water with their various rapids and lengths. When you take into account both novice and expert rafting, they are great for rafting.

Indulge in more adventurous activities in Darjeeling if you're interested in doing so. For all adventure seekers, a journey to Sandakphu is a must-do. For those who enjoy trekking, it is the best place to go because it is the highest point in the state of West Bengal. This place is renowned for providing the best panoramic views of the mesmerising Mt. Everest and the majestic Kanchenjunga Peak and is situated at an astonishing height of 3,636 metres.

Kayaking is a great alternative to white-water river rafting if you don't like it. Only when you make time to take in the beauty of the natural world, you can truly enjoy this activity. You will only really appreciate kayaking in a handful of locations throughout India, and this is one of them. The river that offers excellent kayaking opportunities comes from Singla.

Mountain Biking

From Ghum to Siliguri, mountain riding is another unusual adventure sport in Darjeeling. This is for you if you want to experience some adventure and visit beautiful landscapes. You can take a cab to the Pashupati market after leaving Ghoom to begin your tour. Following 58 miles of uninterrupted cycling, you'll stop at Mirik for the night. You have to travel 52 kilometres the following morning through Mirik to get to Dudhia.

Zorbing is a must-do in Darjeeling if you're looking for humorous adventure activities. This unusual sport involves rolling over hills while enclosed within a soft plastic ball. Your children will also like it if you are travelling with them. The crowd shout in excitement and enjoy themselves, but not more than you as you spin over Darjeeling's gorgeous meadows.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railroad

In the 1880s, work on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly referred to as the Toy Train, began. Locals created tiny but potent engines to navigate the harsh terrain at the behest of their British occupiers. The latter insisted that small-gauge rails be erected between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling.

Hundreds of years were spent with the town under British rule

The history of India spans about 4,000 years and is extensive, self-sustaining, and well-documented. The British Empire, however, grew more interested in conquering what it regarded as the Far East, which included India, as commerce routes became easier to travel. The first land acquisition occurred in 1757, and the region was under the control of Great Britain until 1948.

Darjeeling is a small but incredibly diverse city

The cultural mix of Darjeeling is exceptionally varied. Along with the local Lepcha people, individuals from West Bengal, Nepal, Tibet, and other places can be found here.

Amazing Cable Car Ropeway in the Town

A trip on the Darjeeling Ropeway to get the best perspective of the Rangeet Valley is a must. With just one passenger vehicle, this cable car ropeway debuted in 1968. It was India's first ropeway to be constructed. Currently, 16 automobiles make the 45-minute trip from Singamari (7,000 feet above sea level) to Singla (800 feet above sea level).

Darjeeling Culture

Lepchas, or Rongpa (the ravine people), as they like to be called, were the original occupants of the Darjeeling Hills. Despite having an unknown origin, they clearly have Mongolian features. The Khampas, a Lepcha subgroup, are more swashbuckling and warrior-like than their meek relatives. Recent Tibetan immigrants are known as Khampas.

The majority of the population in the Hills are Gorkhas. They have a variety of dialects and are a hardworking, entrepreneurial race. The British and Indian forces offered employment and protection to the short Mongolian-type Gorkhas of Nepal, who are known for their military skill worldwide and were the first to get the coveted Victoria Cross. The Khukri, a curved ornamental knife, is the standard weapon carried by them.

The Newars, better known as Sherpas around the world, are also present in the population. They are renowned for their bravery, tenacity, and sure-footedness, as well as for their invaluable contributions to mountaineering. The Bhutias are classified into Tibetan, Bhutanese, Dharma, and Sikkimese. They are also widely present in the Hills, with a larger proportion coming from the Siliguri region of Bengal.

Singing and playing musical instruments are among the most popular pastimes in Darjeeling, which is known as a haven for music and music enthusiasts. The people take great pleasure in following their traditions and the significance of music in their social and cultural lives. The heart of Nepali rock music is in Darjeeling, and the younger generation of the twenty-first century also likes western music. Football and cricket are Darjeeling's two sports of liking.

Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity are the three main religions practised in Darjeeling, while Nepali, Gorkha, Tibetan, Hindi, Bengali, and English are the languages that are most frequently heard there. Two important industries that contribute significantly to Darjeeling's economy are the tourism and tea industries.

Darjeeling Festivals

There are regional festivities specific to this area, in addition to Durga Puja, Diwali, Saraswati Puja, Shivratri, etc. While the Tibetans hold their Devil Dances to celebrate their New Year in their monasteries from the last week of February to March, the Lepchas and Bhutias celebrate the New Year in January.

The snake or dragon dances twist through the streets, just like in Chinese tradition. There are strong folk dances, and the males take part in the Libus' "Chabrung," the Tamangs' "Damfu," and the electrifying Maruni, which is the most well-known of them all. Gay folk songs like "Jhowre," which is about the lover, and "Juhari," which is about a pair who is in love, fill the air.

Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival

The Darjeeling Tea Festival, held in November or December, draws visitors from all over the world. The event features tasting sessions in addition to a presentation and exhibition on tea culture. Tea enthusiasts will learn about the history of tea and become familiar with it.

Harry and Meghan's Nigeria trip sparks fury in royal family

N EW DELHI: Prince Harry, 39, and Meghan Markle, 42, recently undertook a trip to Nigeria, drawing sharp reactions from the British royal family. Despite stepping back from royal duties in 2020, the couple's visit resembled an official royal tour, causing significant consternation among senior royals.

Royal expert Tom Quinn told the Mirror that the trip "confirmed the worst fears" of Harry's family, making Prince William and King Charles "absolutely furious." The tour included traditional elements of a royal visit, such as receptions, school visits, and meetings with wounded soldiers and the disabled. Quinn noted, "Everything you might expect from an official royal visit was there — the receptions, the visits to schools and charities, to wounded soldiers and the disabled. Charles is said to be angrier than anyone has ever seen him."

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office clarified that Harry and Meghan were visiting Nigeria in a private capacity and that the UK government was not involved in organizing their activities. Nonetheless, the visit had all the markings of a traditional royal tour, leading to perceptions of the couple acting as working royals.

During their visit, Meghan co-hosted a Women in Leadership event with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the World Trade Organization. Referring to Nigeria as "my country," the Duchess of Sussex described the experience as "eye-opening" and "humbling." The couple also visited children at the Lights Academy in Abuja and met with injured service members at a military hospital.

Royal experts claim the trip has made the royal family worry that Harry and Meghan have gone "rogue." Quinn stated, "For Charles and William, it’s as if Meghan and Harry are saying, ‘We don’t need your permission to be working royals — we will do it on our own terms whenever and wherever we like.’" He added that their speeches and overall demeanor were designed to give the impression that they are still active royals, a notion that William and Charles "don’t like one bit."

The trip is seen as a challenge to the traditional royal structure, with concerns that Harry and Meghan might continue to undertake such visits independently. Quinn suggested that William and Charles are left pondering, "How are we going to control this nightmare situation?"

King Charles III

The king is on the move.

King Charles III announced his first trip out of the UK since he was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

The monarch, 75, will be traveling to France next month to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day .

He will be joined by his wife, Queen Camilla, 76, and his son, Prince William, 41, Buckingham Palace confirmed to the BBC.

King Charles III.

The trio will visit Portsmouth on June 5 to mark 80 years since the infamous Allied landings in 1944, which were a huge turning point in World War 2 .

On June 6, Charles and Camilla will visit the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer to honor all 22,422 British unit casualties from the Battle of Normandy.

William will not go to Ver-sur-Mer. Instead, he will visit Omaha Beach with several heads of state, according to the BBC.

The Prince of Wales will then return to England for the much-publicized wedding of his friend Hugh Grosvenor, which neither Harry and Meghan Markle, nor Charles and Camilla will be attending.

Charles’ sister, Princess Anne, will also be involved in the Normandy ceremony to celebrate Canada’s contribution to the Allied victory at D-Day.

Prince Harry.

The upcoming excursion to France will be Charles’ first time overseas since he learned of his he had cancer in February.

The king  underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate when doctors discovered “a separate issue of concern” that requires treatment.

Buckingham Palace has not clarified what kind of cancer Charles has.

Charles spoke out about his cancer battle  just days after  going public with the news .

“I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days,” he said in a message  released by Buckingham Palace  on February 10. “As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.”

The monarch, who is  receiving outpatient treatment for his cancer , officially returned to official public duties  in late April. He visited a cancer treatment center at University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre in central London with Camilla.

Charles’ daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, has cancer as well.

The Princess of Wales, 42, shared her diagnosis to the world in a prerecorded clip shared on March 22. She revealed that “cancer was found to be present” after she underwent abdominal surgery in January.

Kate’s type of cancer also hasn’t been confirmed to the public.

Alyssa Milano and her husband, David Bugliari, enjoyed a romantic couples getaway with friends at a lavish $3,000-a-night suite in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The “Charmed” actress and two other couples escaped to Nobu Los Cabos Residences’ extravagant, 3-bedroom Sakyü suite, an insider tells Page Six.

“Couples trip to #nobuloscabosresidences. Ummm. This place is absolute perfection,” Milano wrote on Instagram Tuesday along with several photos from her vacation. “For long term stay, a romantic getaway or a family focused vacation. Highly recommend.”

She added that the hospitality made her feel “comfortable” and she raved about the “next level” food and “yummy” cocktails.

“We are here with all our couples best friends and I can’t stop smiling. #travel #romanticgetaway,” she said.

We’re told Milano was seen “enjoying downtime” in the private suite, which boasts a personal pool, jacuzzi, private gym, massage suite, barbecue area, garden views, and round-the-clock concierge service.

The opulent accommodations also feature bathrooms with open showers, double vanities and traditional Onsen teak soaking tubs for ultimate relaxation.

There is also a gourmet chef’s kitchen with updated appliances, a chic living room, a spanning dining space and sleek, modern bedrooms featuring plush bedding and soothing neutral tones.

“The contemporary Japanese minimalism creates an ambiance of serenity and tranquility for ultimate relaxation,” the hotel’s website states.

Other fun fixtures include a gorgeous terrace, pool table, and several flatscreen televisions.

“Alyssa and her husband had a fantastic time with the staff, interacting with the private butlers in the cabanas, etc.,” the insider shares. “The group of couples spent most of the time poolside, taking in the adults-only infinity pool, and said they indulged in the super hospitable service.”

An insider also tells us that Milano went for some “pampering sessions” at the resort’s Esencia Spa.

While unwinding in the luxurious wellness facility, Milano reveled in the outdoor hydrotherapy garden, which features steam and sauna areas, an outdoor shower, a cabana jacuzzi and a hydrotherapy pool.

Milano shared several glimpses of her magical trip on social media including a sweet selfie with her husband as they soaked in their private hot tub.

In the cute image, Milano wore a busty $148 one-piece bathing suit by Cosita Linda Beachwear.

Milano also shared a photo with one of her gal pals as they soaked up some sun by the large pool overlooking the beach. The actress wore blue low-rise cargo pants and a cropped T-shirt and was holding a chilled red cocktail garnished with sage leaf.

All three ladies also matched in monogrammed tiger-print pajama sets with their respective husbands for a silly photo opp inside their stunning suite.

Holding Saba the Space Dog, Blue Origin astronaut and philanthropist Sharon Hagle welcomes students from various Orange County elementary schools to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex as a part of the Spacekids Global field trip in this March 8, 2023 file photo. (Joe Burbank/Orlando Sentinel)

It’s part of a contest from the Winter Park-based national nonprofit SpaceKids Global that Sharon Hagle founded in 2015. It aims to stoke interest in the space industry among elementary-school children, focusing on STEAM education, which is science, technology, engineering, art and math.

“I think this is a great opportunity for the kids to really learn,” she said. “What occupations we have here, we need up there, including space reporters.”

The National SpaceKids Press Squad Competition will award eight children ages 8 to 12 and one parent or guardian a two-day, all-expenses paid trip to the Space Coast. There they will be able to do something most professional journalists have yet to do, tour Blue Origin’s Merritt Island rocket factory, home to the New Glenn rocket Jeff Bezos has said will have its first launch attempt from Cape Canaveral later this year.

The winners will also visit the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, including its new Gateway attraction tied to commercial space endeavors. It’s home to a New Shepard simulator that opened last December.

And the contest also promised training “from a real-life reporter,” to give them TV journalism lessons. With those skills, the “Press Squad” will interview Blue Origin engineers, spacecraft designers and managers about their careers.

“We hope that their local communities will pick up the story, and just spread the word across the country that space is for everyone,” Sharon Hagle said. “What we’re trying to do at SpaceKids Global is bring the possibilities of space to kids everywhere, and we want to make learning fun again, and this is a great example of how to do it.”

If the stars align, they also will interview and watch the Hagles on their return flight to space on Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. The Hagles would launch from Texas, and the contest winners would be covering the launch remotely from Blue Origin’s Rocket Park complex in Florida.

“They’re at mission control. They’ll have a live feed. They’ll be able to see everything,” she said. “They’ll actually be sitting at one of the monitors, and they’ll have their press reporter credentials on. So I mean, we’re gonna make this really special for them.”

The Hagles were on the fourth crewed New Shepard flight on March 31, 2022, for a quick suborbital trip to space, paying Blue Origin an undisclosed amount of money. Marc Hagle is president and CEO of commercial property company Tricor International Corp. The couple live in Winter Park and have a philanthropic hand in several Orlando-area ventures.

Winter Park couple finally makes it to space on Blue Origin flight

Their trip, which featured a weightless kiss, was the culmination of the married couple’s dreams to go to space started when Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic began corralling customers for its own space venture. The Hagles were among the first to buy prospective tickets back in 2007.

“Our good friend Richard Branson, his quote struck home. It really resonated with me, and he always says, ‘If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re too small,” Sharon said.

The Hagles have yet to fly on Virgin but are still in line. Sharon said she would also love to fly on SpaceX one day.

“If there’s really a Santa, we could go on SpaceX and do a three- to five-day orbit around the planet,” she said. “With that mission comes a lot of responsibility, because Marc and I would both like to do research experiments while we’re up there and have that opportunity.”

It feeds into her altruistic desire to give back and spark interest in the youngest students.

“So not only are we contributing to the future, in the scientific manner, but also sharing our stories to get the next generation of space travelers excited about their futures,” she said. “We’ve got to get them engaged, or they’re going to be left behind.”

It’s why she decided to start SpaceKids Global after listening to a guest speaker at Rollins College, physicist Michio Kaku, more than a decade ago.

“He was brilliant, and he talked where everybody could understand. And his message was, if you don’t have kids hooked on math and science by 6 and 7, you’re going to lose them,” she said. “And with that message, it was just time to start to do something.”

She noted that the space industry will need many kinds of people in a future space economy.

“We know that space is for everyone, and that everything that we have here on Earth, we’re going to need off-planet,” she said.

No launch date has been set for the Hagles’ Blue Origin launch, but it will be some time after the contest winners are chosen on Aug. 2.

The contest, run in collaboration with Blue Origin’s nonprofit Club for the Future, was launched on May 3, National Space Day.

One winner each will come from an active-duty military family, an active-duty first responder family, and a member of a Boys & Girls Club, and five others from across the United States.

Parents and guardians can enter their children until June 14 at the nonprofit’s website at www.spacekids.global .

Lone Peak avalanche: For accomplished adventurer, Utah backcountry outing was ‘just a Thursday’

Austin mallet ran 100-mile races, skied the messner coulior on his first trip to denali in 2023.

In the early hours of the morning, before he set off on a grueling ski mountaineering expedition up Lone Peak and beyond, Austin Mallet took the time to make his girlfriend breakfast. He told her he would be back at her place in Salt Lake City before she got off work. That night, they had dinner plans at his favorite local restaurant, Vessel.

But he never came back. Mallet, 32, of Bozeman, Montana, and one of his two companions, 23-year-old Andrew Cameron of Salt Lake City, died later that morning in an avalanche near Lone Peak in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Leaving from Draper’s Hidden Valley Park, the men had embarked on a ski-and-hike route that would not only take them to the top of Lone Peak, elevation 11,253 feet, but also near the summit of North Thunder Mountain before depositing them just west of Snowbird ski resort. The 9-mile trek included roughly 8,570 feet of vertical, some of it through waist-deep snow.

“A lot of people who backcountry ski would probably think that this is that mission of a lifetime,” said Mallet’s girlfriend, Emily McKay. “This was just a Thursday morning for Austin.”

Mallet spent the past five years dedicating himself to becoming an adept rock and ice climber and ski mountaineer. A former competitive cyclist and skier, he moved from Texas to Montana in 2019 to hone his alpine skills. In 2021, inspired by the Wasatch Ultimate Ridge Linkup , an endurance hike-and-climb route near Salt Lake City, he pioneered the Hyalite Ultimate Ridge Linkup (HURL) in the mountains around Bozeman. The roughly 28-mile running and climbing route included roughly 14,000 feet of climbing to the top of 12 peaks and took him more than 15 hours. He also completed the Grand Traverse in Grand Teton National Park in a single push.

Three days after the avalanche, he was scheduled to fly to Alaska for his third expedition to Denali .

Courtesy of Emily McKay. Austin Mallet of Bozeman, Montana, was an adept alpinist who skied the Messner Coulior and climbed Cassin on his first trip to Denali in Alaska in 2023. Mallet was one of the two men who died in an avalanche near Lone Peak in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

Chris Labosky accompanied Mallet on his initial successful attempts at summiting Denali last year and planned to join him again this month.

“We were a perfect fit for each other because he was somebody who really liked to move fast in the mountains. He’s incredibly physically fit,” Labosky said. “You find a lot of people that do backcountry skiing, or they’re good skiers, but they’re kind of slow. And he and I liked to move fast.”

Labosky said that trait proved fortuitous in last year’s trip to Denali. In 2023, more than a thousand people attempted to summit the 20,310-foot peak, North America’s highest. An endless series of storms kept fewer than 300 from reaching the top — one of the lowest summit rates in recent history. Mallet and Labosky, meanwhile, went up and down three times.

They achieved one of those via a two-day climbing adventure up Cassin Ridge, which required them to bivouac overnight. Labosky believes they were among just three parties to successfully complete that feat last year. They also, he said, made the only ski descent of the Messner Couloir in 2023. That sheer line, which starts at the top of Denali, was featured in “The Fifty Classic Descents of North America,” a book by Chris Davenport that has become the Fodor’s Guide of ski mountaineering.

Near the top of the Messner, Labosky said, the snow was perfection. After about 4,000 feet of descent, though, it turned to blue ice too hard and slick to turn skis on. With a deep crevasse looming below the route, Labosky and Mallet made the decision to transition from skis to technical climbing for the remainder of the descent. Using ice climbing tools like screws and axes, the pair climbed the rest of the way down while a mass of climbers hunkered down at the 14,000-foot base camp looked on.

Chris Labosky | mtnchronicles.com Austin Mallet of Bozeman, Montana, was an adept alpinist who skied the Messner Coulior and climbed Cassin on his first trip to Denali in Alaska in 2023. Mallet was one of the two men who died in an avalanche near Lone Peak in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

“Everybody knew that these two guys had skied the Messner and they had to downclimb this sheer blue ice at the bottom,” Labosky said. “And so nobody else did the Messner the rest of the season.”

Many of their adventures contained an element of danger, but, Labosky said, they were far from reckless.

Prior to any big outing, Mallet would inevitably churn out a trip spreadsheet. He would detail every bit of pertinent information, down to how much isobutane gas each person would use per day, what they would eat and which duffle held his sunscreen versus which held his crampons. He created many of them during lulls in his job as a petroleum engineer in the Permian Basin. He would work two-week-long night-shift “hitches” that Labosky is convinced Mallet took because they afforded him ample time to research trips and techniques.

“He was incredibly methodical. I mean, incredibly methodical,” McKay said. “He just had spreadsheets and spreadsheets and everything. Before he did anything, he just did so much research.

“And he just had such a cool head on him, too,” she added. “He kept it tight. If he was in a stressful situation, he could remain so calm and still be methodical. And I think that’s what made him so incredible outside. I think Austin was physically incredibly strong, of course, but mentally as well.”

Which is why it’s so hard for her to believe he’s gone.

An uneasy feeling

Around 10 a.m. — about when authorities believe the avalanche thundered down the Big Willow Aprons — McKay said she felt something was wrong deep in her body.

She texted Mallet. He didn’t text back, which wasn’t that unusual, considering he was on a trek through the mountains. Then she checked his phone’s location. He’d stopped moving, which was a little odd for him. Maybe, she hoped, they needed a break.

An adept alpine climber who previously volunteered for Search and Rescue, she said she was reluctant to “sound the alarm.” Outdoor recreation has its risks, but Mallet, whom she described as “the love of my life,” has always come home.

Emily McKay of Salt Lake City calls Austin Mallet "the love of my life." Mallet, of Bozeman, Montana, was an adept alpinist who skied the Messner Coulior and climbed Cassin on his first trip to Denali in Alaska in 2023. Mallet was one of the two men who died in an avalanche near Lone Peak in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

“That morning, I felt something was wrong, my whole body was shivering,” McKay wrote in an email, “and I reached out to his best friends for advice on what to do/ collaborate on how worried to be.”

When she saw the Instagram post by the Utah Avalanche Center stating it believed skiers had been caught in an avalanche near Lone Peak, though, she knew. Who else would be on a route that remote and grueling?

According to a UAC report on the slide, the men had just finished skinning up the Big Willow Apron and had begun bootpacking onto a thin ridge that ran through the middle of the cirque when the avalanche hit. The skier in the lead was tossed to the looker’s right side of the spine and partially buried. Mallet and Cameron were thrown to the left and carried further down the avalanche path.

Once the survivor dug himself out, he set out to rescue Cameron and Mallet. He likely arrived just a few minutes too late.

According to Salt Lake County Search and Rescue volunteers, all three carried standard avalanche gear — a beacon, shovel and probe — and helmets. Cameron worked at SkiMoCo and often participated in twice-monthly skimo races held by Utah Ski Mountaineering. The third man worked in the outdoor retail industry. Craig Gordon, a UAC forecaster who worked the scene, called all three “very experienced, very serious, very dedicated backcountry skiers.”

(Christopher Cherrington | The Salt Lake Tribune)

Labosky knows others who have died in the mountains, and he and Mallet have made a few rescues themselves. This feels different, he said. He can’t brush this tragedy aside by saying they must not have known what they were doing.

“It’s especially hard because it’s not clear what you change,” Labosky said. “It wasn’t like Austin was doing one of the hardest things he’s done. This is sort of, for him, a somewhat mundane ski tour.”

Labosky said he will continue to seek adventure in the remote mountains, and he’ll take what lessons he can glean from Mallet’s experience with him, no matter their weight. He’ll carry his avalanche airbag more often, for example. He’ll pay more attention to subtle changes in snow conditions and question what clues they offer.

He’ll take the time to have breakfast and coffee with his wife.

“I’ve always known that the love of my life takes risks in the mountains,” McKay said. “Just, you don’t think it’s gonna happen on a Thursday morning in your backyard in spring conditions.”
