BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Multiple municipalities lifted their travel bans and downgraded to travel advisories Thursday morning. The travel bans went into effect Wednesday as heavy lake-effect snow impacted Western New York.
The travel ban issued for Hamburg was lifted at 5:30 a.m. and the ban for Lackawanna was lifted as of 7 a.m. Thursday.
The travel bans for the City of Buffalo and Orchard Park were lifted at 8 a.m. Thursday.
A travel advisory is in effect for all of Erie County until further notice. A travel advisory was also in effect for the City of Lockport until 6 a.m. Thursday.
The travel ban in North Tonawanda was lifted at 8 p.m. Wednesday and the ban in the City of Tonawanda was lifted around 9:15 p.m.
Cheektowaga Town Supervisor Brian Nowak said that he hopes that Cheektowaga and Lancaster will be able to lift bans at 6 a.m. Thursday, weather permitting.
“There is somewhere between 100 to 200 private contractor pieces of equipment here in the district and they really have been doing a good job,” Buffalo Common Council president Chris Scanlon said. “Just a matter of being patient and we’ll have everyone dug out as soon as we possibly can.”
A Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect for Erie, Genesee, and Wyoming counties until 7 p.m. Thursday. A Winter Weather Advisory will go into effect at 10 a.m. Wednesday for Niagara County. Snowfall rates are predicted to fall at up to 3 inches in some parts of WNY.
The Sabres postponed Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks due to weather conditions.

Travel ban lifted in Erie County as road conditions improve, warmer weather settles in
A travel ban has been lifted in New York’s Erie County, days after it was put into place as a deadly blizzard swept across the region, at times reducing visibility to zero.
The ban, which was implemented Friday, expired at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, officials said.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told reporters Wednesday night that the roads were in good enough condition to lift the ban.
“It has been 6 days,” Brown said. “Some people have not been able to restock groceries, to restock medications, to get to medical appointments, and being able to lift the travel ban safely now will allow people to do those important things.”
Most streets in the city are passable, Brown said, and he expected crews to have made a pass down the center of every residential street by the end of the night.
Though the ban has been lifted, a travel advisory was in place for Erie County as cleanup continues and a county-wide state of emergency remained. Brown asked people to be cautious and avoid driving unless necessary.
More than 450 pieces of equipment were on Buffalo streets plowing and hauling snow, and many traffic signals were still not working, he said.
The storm dumped upwards of 20 inches of snow in parts of New York — including nearly 52 inches at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, according to the National Weather Service.
The powerful storm plunged much of the United States into a deep freeze, creating life-threatening conditions as more than 1 million homes and businesses were left in the dark, and wreaking havoc on flight schedules during the busy holiday travel week.
At least 76 people died in the storm, according to an NBC News tally. Erie County accounted for 37 of the deaths, 29 of which were in Buffalo.
Weather-related deaths were also reported in Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Illinois and Vermont.
In Buffalo, officials said it was possible the number could rise.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said Wednesday night that police have cleared the backlog of calls relating to welfare checks, stranded motorists and reports of bodies.
Search and rescue teams were returning Thursday to check locations where bodies had been reported but could not be confirmed — either because of the amount of snow or the vagueness of location, Gramaglia said.
"We believe there were some credible 911 calls that contained more information ... low single digit numbers, that's again why we're going to concentrate our efforts on hitting those areas," he told reporters.
In Erie County, 17 of the people who died in the blizzard were found outside and four were in a vehicle , according to County Executive Mark Poloncarz.
Several people died because of a delay receiving emergency services or from cardiac events related to shoveling or blowing snow. Of the deaths, nine were people who died because they had no heat in their homes, he said.
Poloncarz said in a tweet Wednesday night that 500 National Guard members have conducted nearly 850 welfare checks on residents who had longterm power outages.
Power was being restored to New York, and by early Thursday, about 400 customers in the state were without electricity, according to PowerOutage.us .
In Buffalo, where more than 20,000 customers were without power at one point during the storm, only three had no electricity Wednesday night, according to Brown, the mayor.
On Wednesday, city offices, facilities and roadways opened, as temperatures rose into the 40s across parts of New York.
Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which has been closed since Friday , reopened Wednesday.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Wednesday night that all major state highways in western New York, including the Erie County portion of Interstate 190 and several state routes, would reopen at midnight.
“I am extremely grateful to all the highway maintenance workers, first responders and emergency service staff who continue to work tirelessly to help their fellow New Yorkers," Hochul said in a statement .
The temperature is expected to continue climbing to the low-50s in the Buffalo region by Friday, and will help melt the accumulated snow, according to the National Weather Service .

UPDATE: All travel bans lifted across Erie County
Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - The last remaining travel ban in Erie Couny was lifted when the City of Lackawanna reopened to traffic in full at 1 p.m. following a nightmarish weekend of lake effect snow and blizzad-lie conditions.
Additionally, all major roadways that were closed due to the weather conditions have been reopened, including the NYS Thruway, Route 400, Route 219 and the Skyway/Lakeshore complex
Saturday brings more snow, leaving some areas buried under 6 feet
On Friday, the National Weather Service expected snow totals of around two feet. Now, on Saturday, snow totals have already reached 77 inches in Orchard Park (6.4 feet) and 73.7 inches (6.14 feet) in Hamburg.
While NWS is reporting only 3.3 inches in Tonawanda, as of Erie County's 6 a.m. update, the expectation is that the snow is now moving northward, and areas that were not hit as badly Thursday and Friday can expect more snow Saturday.
- Lake Effect Snow Warnings are still in place through Sunday for several counties including Erie and Niagara
- Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for Wyoming, Allegany, Orleans, and McKean (PA) counties through Sunday.
- A State of Emergency in Erie County continues indefinitely
- A Travel Ban is in effect for most of Erie County— but has been downgraded to just an advisory in several locations.
Erie County Travel Ban
As of 3 p.m. travel ban is in effect for the City of Buffalo south of William Street, Hamburg, Evans, Eden, Boston, Orchard Park, Aurora, Wales, Marilla, Elma, West Seneca, Cheektowaga, Lancaster, and Alden. All other parts of Erie County are under a travel advisory.
"We are making progress in the city of Buffalo, but there is still a long way to go. We have had a snow ban set up for an extended period of time, as you know, in South Buffalo, dumping over four feet of snow," Mayor Byron Brown said.
Another eight to 10 inches are expected through 1 a.m. Sunday in the City of Buffalo.
"So we are coming to the end, hopefully, of this event, if the forecasts that we've received are correct," Brown added.
Erie County continues to provide updates every few hours on their YouTube channel.
“The vast majority of Erie County residents have done the right thing and stayed off the roads,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said in a tweet Friday. “Unfortunately, it only takes one to two vehicles to tie up plow and first responder crews. Please stay home.”
WNY Travel Bans & Advisories
Niagara County: No travel advisories are in effect and there are no plans to institute any, according to Niagara County Director of Emergency Services Jonathan Schultz.
“We will continue to closely monitor the storm and be prepared to take any actions regarding travel and safety should they be deemed necessary,” Schultz said in a statement.
Genesee County: No travel advisories are in effect, but the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to stay home so that emergency personnel can travel more easily.
“Please remember that even if it is not snowing where you are, the destination you are traveling to may have poor visibility and heavy snow accumulation,” Genesee County Sheriff William Sheron said in a statement posted to Facebook. “The best and safest option for you and your loved ones is to stay home until the snowstorm passes.”
Chautauqua County: No travel advisories are in effect, but officials are reminding Chautauqua County residents to postpone or cancel non-essential travel, drive slowly, keep 200 feet behind snow plows and keep an emergency kit and cell phone with them if driving, according to a Thursday news release .
“With this storm, drivers should be prepared for areas of snow-covered roads and poor visibility,” Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone said in a statement. “If you must travel, drivers are urged to slow down and use caution when traveling on slick or snow-covered roads.”

NFTA & Colleges
As of Saturday morning, the NFTA says buses are not running in Erie and Niagara counties, except for Paratransit but the NFTA is asking riders to reschedule if possible.
Erie County Community South Campus is being used as a snow dump by the county, and North Campus is being utilized for staging rescue crews.
National Guard Deployed & State Efforts
Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed the National Guard to assist in Erie County's efforts.

In advance of the storm, Gov. Hochul on Thursday urged residents in Western New York to stay home
“We’re expecting upwards of two to four feet. It’s not just the volume, two to four feet the first night, we could possibly see anywhere from four to six feet between now and Sunday. It is the rate of snow that is most concerning,” Hochul said.

on Thursday, December 29, 2022. Simultaneously, Mayor Brown announced the travel ban has been replaced with a travel
advisory, until further notice, as crews continue their snow removal and hauling efforts which involve a large amount of
equipment and heavy vehicles on City streets.
“Our goal was to make significant progress today in clearing our roads of vehicles and snow so that we could lift the ban
in the City of Buffalo tonight and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” stated Mayor Brown. “While we’re lifting the travel ban
and replacing it with a travel advisory, we are still encouraging people to be careful. I want to thank DPW Commissioner
Nate Marton for spearheading this coordinated snow removal process, as well as our dedicated City snow fighting crews,

The Travel Ban south of Broadway will be lifted at 8am this morning. A travel advisory will remain in place. A reminder that City Hall is closed today. ~ Mayor Byron Brown
During the first snowstorm Governor Hochul said that 300 tickets were issued to people who were caught driving on the I-90 during the travel ban.
The Skyway has been closed in both directions as of a message sent out by the City around 7:30 this morning. There is a travel advisory still in effect for parts of the city that are not subject to the travel ban. The city warns residents to avoid any unnecessary travel. If you do have to travel, as an essential employee or for an emergency, please use caution.
Travel Ban Issued For South Buffalo
Travel in South Buffalo is not permitted at the current time. A travel ban message was issued at approximately 8:23 am. Driving is prohibited south of Broadway, including Kaisertown, Lovejoy, and Old First Ward due to heavy snowfall and lack of visibility. Mayor Byron Brown also tweeted about the driving ban,
A Driving Ban is now in effect in the City of Buffalo ONLY in areas South of Broadway which includes South Buffalo, Kaisertown, Lovejoy & Old First Ward. The snowband is expected to move north through the City as the day goes on.
The National Weather Service in Buffalo warns a lake effect snow band is behind the heavy snowfall today,
A heavy lake effect snow band will be across the Buffalo metro area today. The band will meander northward to southern Niagara County this afternoon, then will shift back southward late this afternoon and evening. Expect near whiteout conditions within the heavy snow band.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Lake Effect Snow that brought whiteout conditions making travel on some Western New York roadways nearly impossible is ending.
And so are the travel bans.
There is currently a Travel Advisory still in place for all of Erie County, some parts of Niagara County and South Buffalo.
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz shared an announcement on X saying that the travel advisory will stay in place as lake effect snow continued through 7 p.m. on Thursday.

In a late evening press conference Friday night, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz continued to remind residents of the travel ban, noting that it is illegal to force employees to work in areas under a ban.
Reminder to all employers: if your business is in a driving ban area or your employees are located in a driving ban area, it is illegal to make them come into work. — Mark Poloncarz (@markpoloncarz) November 19, 2022
Over 300 tickets have been written by law enforcement, due to abandoned cars being left behind on streets and highways.
Poloncarz urged motorists to refrain from leaving their vehicles behind as it presents a blockade to ambulances and tow trucks attempting to make their way toward emergencies.
Abandoned, towed vehicles are currently going to the McKinley Mall lot.

Buffalo Public Schools closed Tuesday after parts of area get 3 feet of snow
Aaron besecker.
- Jan 15, 2024
Dave Connell uses a snow blower to clear a sidewalk as winds kick snow into the air in North Tonawanda on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024.
Buffalo Public Schools will be closed Tuesday as some new snow fell and snowstorm cleanup continued Monday in parts of the city.
The district told students and staff to stay home "due to persistent and continuing snow and high snow accumulations in portions of the city."
With localized lake-effect snow hanging around the region, a driving ban in Lackawanna became the last to be lifted early Monday afternoon. Authorities announced Monday morning the ban would expire at 1 p.m.
The city was the last municipality in Erie County to remain under a travel ban.
The entire county remains under a travel advisory.
The ban in Cheektowaga, Sloan and Depew was lifted at 9 a.m.
"Mayor (Annette) Iaffalo informs me the mains and secondaries are currently good, but they need more time to clean up some neighborhoods/side streets," County Executive Mark Poloncarz wrote in a social media post. "Additional equipment has been provided by the county to help them."

The snow bands were still expected to drop 2 inches of snow per hour. They will weaken as they move north.
In terms of snow accumulation, preliminary figures from the National Weather Service showed 41.3 inches of snow in Hamburg, 41 inches in Angola, 37 inches West Seneca and 36 inches in Blasdell.

All The Travel Bans + Advisories in Western New York
- Share on Facebook
The snow is coming down in Western New York today and it was coming down fast earlier this morning. A lot of towns and villages have issued travel advisories and bans in order to get out the plows and services to make sure that the roads are safe to travel on.
This morning, traffic was, as you can imagine EXTREMELY light. There were very few cars out on the road for most of the morning. Where are the travel bans and advisories in Western New York? What is the difference between a travel ban and a travel advisory?
TRAVEL BANS:
- Niagara Falls
- North Tonawanda
When there is a travel ban, that means absolutely no unnecessary travel until further notice. North Tonawanda's travel ban will last through 6 pm today.
TRAVEL ADVISORY:
- All of Niagara County
Travel advisory means that you should not travel unless you have to. Residents are encouraged to restrict non-essential travel for the duration of today's snow event.
The wind is really going to become an issue later on today as well. Wind gusts are expected to reach close to 30 in the City of Buffalo and between 30 and 40 miles per hour for the rest of Western New York. As of this morning, the Buffalo had over 15 inches of snowfall so far. More snow is expected later today. So, when the wind really gets going, visibility is going to get very bad later this afternoon.
At one point last night, you could look outside and see no snow at all, but then just a couple of hours later see nearly a foot. For a couple of hours, the snow was falling at approximately 4 inches per hour.

How to Observe the Northern Lights This Weekend
The Space Weather Prediction Center said solar activity would be high again on Saturday.
Northern Lights Glow in the Sky Amid Solar Storm
Powerful solar flare activity made the aurora borealis visible unusually far south..
[Laughing] Holy moly. I know. This — I thought it would just be over on the horizon a little — Behind us, too. Yeah. A little green on the horizon. Nothing like this. This is — This is like, ‘Oh, my god.’ Everywhere.
By Claire Moses
Keep an eye on the skies on Saturday night for what could be another dazzling display of nature — or not, depending on your location and weather conditions.
An unusual amount of solar flare activity means that the aurora borealis, or the northern lights, could continue to appear over the weekend.
The solar storm was a level 5 on Friday, which gave some star gazers a clear view of streaks of green, purple and red that arced across the skies. Those conditions are expected to continue, Mike Bettwy, the operations chief of the Space Weather Prediction Center, said on Saturday.
“It should be fairly similar to what we saw last night, maybe not as widespread but fairly close,” Mr. Bettwy said.
“Depending on how everything evolves,” he added, “tomorrow night might actually be better than tonight” for views of the aurora.
In areas with clear skies, the display on Sunday could be similar to what people witnessed on Friday.
If you’re in a place with a lot of bright lights — like a city — it’s going to be hard to see anything. And then there are other complications, like the weather.
Two weather systems on Saturday night could impair viewing of the solar display, said Bryan Jackson, a forecaster at the Weather Prediction Center.
The Northeast is likely to be overcast because of a cloud system that could stretch from the Midwest and center over Pennsylvania. Cloud coverage might also extend as far as Maine, with the potential to clear around New Hampshire.
“This event is strong enough that the Northeast United States pretty much universally has a good shot at seeing it,” Mr. Bettwy said. “It’s just a matter of making sure that the cloud cover is absent.”
A second storm system, which was predicted to produce a fair amount of rain and cloud coverage, is possible over the Southwest.
Mr. Jackson said Michigan was likely to have clear skies between waves of rain. Other regions of the country could have clear views, too.
“In Seattle, it was pretty clear last night and it looks to be pretty clear again,” Mr. Jackson said on Saturday. “Portions of the southern Rockies, portions of the southern Plains are not overcast, but not completely clear either.”
The lights were particularly brilliant over England on Friday, and images of the solar show awed onlookers in parts of Maine and Massachusetts.
A tip: If you are in a clear area, even south of where the aurora is forecast, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone.
The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.
Why is this happening?
A severe solar storm is brewing.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center on Friday issued a rare warning after a solar outburst reached Earth.
As nuclear reactions occur on the sun, it routinely expels material from its surface.
Officials said that the solar activity could potentially cause electrical outages or interfere with navigation and communication systems.
When is this happening?
The expelled material from the sun could reach Earth’s atmosphere by Friday afternoon or evening, officials said.
“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen, certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday.
What’s flaring up?
The Space Weather Prediction Center said on Friday night that we were experiencing an extreme solar storm, a level 5 , up from a level 4 earlier in the day .
The last extreme event happened in October 2003 and resulted in power failures in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, the center said.
The current storm is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.
“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
Katrina Miller , Emmett Lindner and Judson Jones contributed reporting.
