The Best Time to Visit the Seychelles Islands

Located approximately 930 miles off the eastern coast of Africa in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles are a slice of heaven right here on Earth. They are beautiful year-round but the best time to visit is in spring or fall when the islands are less crowded and the weather is nearly perfect. The archipelago is made up of 115 tiny islands that are well known for their soft, white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and unique wildlife. It is a wonderful destination for travelers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life for a while, providing a serene refuge to be as active or relaxed as they choose.

Some of the top activities include snorkeling and scuba diving , spotting wild giant tortoises, and hiking on tropical trails through lush jungles. Of course, you can also choose to soak up the sun on the beach and enjoy the local food and culture too. Make no mistake, the Seychelles are unlike any other place on the planet, deftly melding a laid-back island vibe with a distinct African influence.

Of course, if you're planning your own visit to this idyllic setting, the first question you probably have is when is the best time to go. As with most island destinations, there isn't really a bad time to visit the Seychelles but there are certainly some months that are better than others.

Weather in the Seychelles

Situated just south of the equator, the Seychelles have fairly stable and predictable weather all year round. There also aren't traditional seasons, with the year split into rainy season and dry season instead. January and February are the wettest months of the year, although showers are common from November through February. During other times of the year, tropical rains are a common occurrence as well, although they don't tend to last long.

The warmest time of the year runs from December to April, although temperatures are fairly steady all year long. In the Seychelles it is unusual for temperatures to drop below 75 degrees Fahrenheit or climb above 90. As a result, it can be warm, but cool ocean breezes make for a pleasant, comfortable experience.

Thanks to their geographical location, the Seychelles generally stay out of the path of the major cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean. It is extremely rare for a major storm to hit the islands, which only reaffirms that it is a destination that is safe and comfortable just about any time of the year.

While weather conditions are favorable just about anytime, the so-called shoulder seasons are quite possibly the best overall time to visit the Seychelles. During the months of April and May the warmer, more humid weather has just passed, while in October and November it has yet to arrive. The result is extremely comfortable conditions that are optimal for exploring the islands.

Those months tend to be fairly quiet in terms of visitors as well, which makes the beaches, restaurants, and other attractions less crowded. It can also make it much easier to book a hotel room, tour, or active excursion, with the possibility to potentially save some cash along the way.

High Season in the Seychelles

Those looking to avoid the crowds may want to stay away from the Seychelles during the months of July, August, December, and January. That is the high tourist seasons, with thousands flocking to the islands to soak up the sun. Some of the smaller, more remote islands that make up the Seychelles are still relatively uncrowded, but expect the more popular areas to be extremely busy throughout those times of the year.

When to Scuba Dive in the Seychelles

As mentioned, the Seychelles are a great destination for scuba divers and are well known for the incredible azure seas, abundant corals, and fascinating sea life that sits just off shore. Fortunately, the scuba diving there is also excellent all year round with virtually no impact from the sifting trade winds or changes in levels of temperature or precipitation.

That said however, the clearest ocean waters are actually found during the shoulder seasons as well, further cementing those months as the best time to go. During April, May, October, and November, the visibility in the water is so clear that divers can see down to as far as 100 feet. There aren't many places on the planet that can claim that kind of clarity. This helps to make the Seychelles one of the best destinations in the world for divers — and even snorkelers — looking to spend a bit of time in the water.

Divers looking to swim with whale sharks will find that the best time for that activity is between September and November. If that's high on your list of "must-do" activities, be sure to plan accordingly.

How the Trade Winds Impact the Weather

The trade winds that blow across the Indian Ocean have a direct impact on the conditions in the Seychelles. From November through March those winds blow from the northwest, bringing warmer temperatures and more humidity with them. Meanwhile, from May to October the winds shift to the southeast, bringing cooler temperatures throughout that period.

Those southerly trade winds have another impact on the island that travelers should keep in mind as well. The stronger breezes during that time of the year often results in large amounts of seaweed being deposited along some of the beaches. So much so, that some of the more popular tourist spots could find themselves closed from time to time. It usually isn't all that difficult to find an alternative beach to spend some time in the sun, but it is important to be aware that this is a possibility before going.

Rainy Season in the Seychelles

From November to February, the rainy season brings frequent tropical storms and higher levels of humidity. Those storms typically arrive in the form of afternoon thunderstorms that can put a damper on outdoor activities. Temperatures also tend to be a little warmer at this time of year as well, although there isn't a lot of variance from month to month.

Events to Check Out:

  • Attend the Seychelles Ocean Festival: Held annually in December, this underwater festival celebrates the importance of the world's oceans.
  • Run the Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon in February.
  • Take part in the Seychelles National Fishing Tournament to raise funds for charity in April.
  • Enjoy the Carnival of Victoria to celebrate multiculturalism, diversity, and history on the islands.
  • Turtle hatchlings begin their march to the sea in January and it lasts until March.

Dry Season in the Seychelles

When the trade winds blow in from June through September, the Seychelles experience their driest and coolest time of the year. During those months, tropical storms can still take place, but they tend to be less intense and shift into the overnight hours, making the days less humid and more pleasant all around. This is a great time of year to go hiking, windsurfing or to whip out the binoculars and go birding.

  • Held in August of each year, the Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival helps draw attention to these aquatic creatures which call the islands home.
  • Visit the Cultural Bazar at any time of the year to immerse yourself in local culture and learn about island life from those who live in the Seychelles themselves.

The Seychelles Islands are beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is during the off-season, in the spring or fall, when the islands are less crowded and the weather is perfect.

If you are planning on visiting two to three islands, plan on spending at least one week in the Seychelles.

The Seychelles are generally safe, however, there have been instances of non-violent burglaries and petty theft, as well as car break-ins and tourist robberies at night. If you use your travel smarts, you will be safe.

Best Times To Visit Seychelles

The best times to visit Seychelles are April, May, October and November. These months represent the transition times between the hot and humid northwest trade winds (from November through March) and the cooler southeast trade winds that define April through October. A visit during these shoulder months offers more mild conditions ideal for sunbathing, wildlife watching and scuba diving. No matter when you visit, you'll encounter temperatures averaging in the 80s. But by frequenting the islands in the spring and fall, you'll also avoid the heavy tourist crowds that descend on the islands in December, January, July and August.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Seychelles?

When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

The best time to visit the Seychelles is in the transitional months, which include April, May, October, and November. The temperatures are milder, with the humid northwest trade winds changing to the cooler southwest winds, so the weather conditions are perfect. There are fewer crowds during these transitional periods, so you won't have to fight your way to the beachside chairs.

When is the rainy season in the Seychelles?

The months with the highest levels of rainfall are December and January . January tends to be the rainiest, with over eleven inches of rain throughout the month. However, the rain tends to be short and heavy, so there will be plenty of bursts of sunshine during your trip.

When is the best time to scuba dive in the Seychelles?

It’s always scuba diving time in the Seychelles, but unsurprisingly, the best conditions are in the transitional months, when the seas are calm and visibility is high. You can expect to spot butterflyfishes, spotted eagle rays, and even green sea turtles.

Which is better: the Maldives vs. the Seychelles?

Both island getaways offer stunning scenery and a relaxing holiday experience, but it depends on what type of holiday you want. The Maldives is a hotspot for romantic trips , with all-inclusive resorts setting the bar high for a luxury holiday, and while there are plenty of luxury stays in the Seychelles, it is definitely an adventure lover's dream .

When is the best time to go to Seychelles?

Seychelles' tropical climate: dry season vs. rainy season.

Let’s get straight to the point! As you may have guessed, the Seychelles have a tropical climate . And a tropical climate means two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season . As you know, I spent 6 years in Polynesia and now live in Guadeloupe, both of which also have a “tropical” climate. I use quotes because in reality it’s not an exact science. Already, this climate can vary from one island to another, and even between the coasts and the interior of the same island. In other words, climate and weather, especially on the islands, are much more complex! Nevertheless, it’s true that there are two seasons in the year, more or less marked by a transitional period.

best time to visit Seychelles

Let’s start with the dry season in the Seychelles , which generally runs from May to October. Quite simply, this is the time to enjoy paradise beaches, coconut palms and turquoise waters. With sunny days, blue skies and few showers, all the conditions are in place for a great vacation. Traveling at this time of year means you can set off on your excursions with peace of mind, without having to check the weather hour by hour. Well, I might be exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea. Temperatures are stable and above all pleasant, between 24 and 30°C! Many travelers prefer to explore the archipelago during this season, so they can relax and enjoy themselves.

The rainy season

Admittedly, the name alone doesn’t make you want to go there! Rest assured, in Seychelles, this is a season that is considered relatively mild. Let me explain: during this period, the climate is wetter and there are more frequent and intense showers . However, there are also sunny days and the temperatures remain pleasant: between 27 and 32°C. For your information, this season lasts from November to April. As you can see, if you decide to come to the Seychelles during this period, you’re more likely to experience rainfall, sometimes unexpectedly, for example during an excursion. But given the temperatures, it’s not really the end of the world, is it?

To talk about the climate in the Seychelles, I had to tell you about cyclones . Let me reassure you right away that, contrary to what you might think, the Seychelles are not a cyclone zone. Only a few of the 115 islands can get hit in January or February, but it’s really very rare. However, it’s true that cyclones do form not far from the Seychelles and can bring strong winds to the islands, but nothing more! So, are you reassured?

Let’s face it, you don’t plan a trip to the Seychelles every four mornings. For many travelers, it’s even their honeymoon destination . It’s true that it requires a certain budget. Starting with the plane ticket! That’s why I’m going to give you a few tips to help you save money.

Choosing low season to visit the Seychelles is a great way to save on your flight, accommodation and activities. What’s more, you’ll be able to enjoy your trip at your leisure, as it will be outside the peak tourist season. That’s two good reasons to plan your trip during the off-season! To give you a better idea, in low season you can find flights from Paris to Victoria for around €700 return, whereas in high season it’s hard to find flights for under €1,000 return and even more.

Outside school holidays

Traveling outside of school vacations also means traveling in the low season. My advice is to avoid December, July and August. For the other months, be sure to check the holiday schedule and zones (A, B, C), which change every year. As for me and the kids, I go during school vacations because, unfortunately, I have no choice! But if you can choose, it’s always better to go when there are no school holidays, both for the prices and for the peace and quiet!

Ideal season for Seychelles

Autres astuces pour voyager à l’économie

Having mentioned the most economical times to travel to the Seychelles, I’d like to suggest some other tips that can always help you avoid breaking the bank:

  • For flights : I recommend using the Skyscanner flight comparison service. It’s so handy, you can see right away which airline offers the cheapest flights. Sometimes you’ll even find that you can save a lot of money by postponing your trip a few days. Personally, I use it for all my travels, it really helps me find flights at the best prices!
  • For accommodation : It’s true that your lodging budget is second only to your airfare. It’s always nice to save some money. My advice: opt for staying in guesthouses and pensions . They’re less expensive and just as nice for a good vacation. It’s more authentic and you can even talk to the Seychellois people. In my opinion, the experience is different, but just as successful!
  • Getting around : First of all, if you’re on the island of Mahé, in Victoria, you can walk or use the bus network. In my opinion, you’ll want to explore the rest of the island! The best option would be to rent a car. If you’re looking for a good deal, I would recommend without hesitation the car rental comparison service DisoversCars . On islands such as Praslin and La Digue, you can enjoy walking or biking, they remain easily accessible!
  • For activities : In Seychelles, I advise you to take advantage of the free activities: hiking, heavenly beaches, visiting Victoria and picturesque villages. Trust me, there’s a lot to explore in this archipelago! For paid activities, I recommend picking the ones you like best and booking them in advance.
  • Food : On the food side (a very important element!), if you’re staying in an Airbnb or guesthouse and have a kitchenette, you can whip up some tasty treats! For an outdoor meal, you can also opt for snacks, which will cost you a lot less than going to a restaurant. And if you’re still on a budget, treat yourself to some Creole restaurants.

Enjoy an authentic experience while avoiding the crowds in Seychelles

Tourist season in Seychelles

You’ve probably heard of the most famous islands: Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. Of course, these 3 islands are also the most visited! We agree that these islands are a must see in the Seychelles . But if you want to get away from the crowds, I’d recommend adding some lesser known islands to your itinerary that are just as incredible to discover.

I’ll probably go into more detail about each of these islands in separate mini-articles, but here’s some information about the secondary islands that are well worth a visit:

  • Curieuse Island : For the record, this unique island with its red soil was once nicknamed the Red Island. And guess what? It’s one of the only places, along with Praslin, where the famous Coco de Mer grows naturally. You’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking scenery and beautiful walks in the heart of nature! In terms of biodiversity, you may even come across giant tortoises, sea turtles and much more!
  • Silhouette Island : A true natural treasure of the Seychelles! This island is a real paradise for divers! Here you can discover the sea floor with its colorful fish and corals. As I write these words, I really want to explore and dive this island! If you’re not comfortable in the water, you can always go for a nice hike.
  • Cerf island : This is very close to the main island of Mahé. It will be easier for you to visit! This small island is also great for scuba diving. There are some great spots to explore the corals! So, are you ready to strap on your snorkel and fins?
  • Bird Island: This island lives up to its name! Here you can see many of the archipelago’s bird species, including the sooty tern. The island is a haven of peace and tranquility, with a strong emphasis on ecotourism. What’s more, it is only a 30-minute flight from Mahé. Imagine the beaches and turquoise waters from the plane as you arrive on the island. Don’t you just love it?
  • Cousine Island : This island is a bit special. It’s private and you can get there by staying in one of the island’s luxury villas. As you can see, if you’re looking for a luxurious experience in a unique setting cut off from the rest of the world, you can stay on this island with your eyes closed!
  • Denis Island : We’re back on a private island! The Denis Island Resort offers more than luxury accommodations! If you can afford it, you’re sure to enjoy a luxurious stay on Denis Island. What’s more, it’s pristine! You’ll be in the heart of nature, where you can see land turtles and even swim with sea turtles.
  • Fregate Island : Let’s stay on a private island with this little piece of tropical paradise! This island offers an idyllic setting with white sandy beaches as far as the eye can see. In the middle of the Indian Ocean you can enjoy the natural beauty of the island with its coconut palms and filaos. Special mention to fishing enthusiasts: you’re in for a treat! Spending a few days on this island is synonymous with luxury and nature.

Well, I hope this overview of the lesser visited islands in the Seychelles has given you a good idea of the itinerary you could prepare! Of course, I’ve only shown you a few of the 115 islands.

To avoid the crowds and spend some time in peace and quiet, I advise you to opt for activities off the beaten track during the busiest hours. When I say “off the beaten track,” I’m referring to lesser-known but equally exotic hikes and visits to local villages. What’s more, they add an authentic touch to your stay. If you’re wondering how to get to some of the lesser-known and more beautiful places, my advice is to get in touch with the locals. I’m sure they’ll know!

clouds seychelles

Plan your visits for less busy times

As far as the most visited sites are concerned, I’d really advise you to visit them at the least crowded times. If you don’t mind getting up early, you’ll be able to enjoy the extraordinary places that attract so many people, while being alone and in peace! In fact, it’s every vacationer’s dream. I’m thinking in particular of places like the Vallée de Mai on Praslin, the Morne Seychellois National Park on Mahé and the Sainte-Anne National Marine Park . What’s more, these places are really in the heart of nature, so you might as well make the most of them by waking up a little earlier (granted, waking up is hard, even on vacation!).

Stay in authentic places away from the tourist areas

Of course, the choice of where to stay will be crucial to your stay. Personally, I prefer authentic, quiet places. To give you an idea of the most peaceful places:

Mahé, in the south of the island :

  • DoubleTree by Hilton Seychelles Allamanda Resort & Spa : A beautiful 4-star hotel with a private beach and stunning ocean views! In this little paradise, you can enjoy an idyllic setting in complete tranquility.
  • Chalets Des Vacances : A charming chalet offering comfortable rooms and, above all, total immersion in local life. Reviews are unanimous: the place feels like it’s out of time, and the host’s welcome is warm.
  • Lazare Picault Hotel : An affordable hotel with great reviews! You’ll have everything you need for a great stay on Mahé.

For more accommodation options on the island of Mahé , please read our detailed article.

In Praslin, Grande Anse :

  • Butterfly Villas : comfortable, fully equipped apartments with private terraces! Conveniently located near Praslin airport, train station and ferries.
  • Anse Kerlan Beach Chalets : colorful, authentic accommodation with typical Seychellois decor. Bonus: ocean view. Isn’t that nice?
  • Oasis Hotel Restaurant & Spa : 3-star hotel with outdoor pool and fully equipped rooms! Travelers with a sweet tooth will appreciate the buffet breakfast.

If you’re planning to stay in Praslin, here are all the accommodations in Praslin .

In La Digue :

  • Hôtel L’Ocean : one of the cheapest options on La Digue. You’ll still enjoy sea views and rooms with all the comforts of home.
  • Lakaz An Bwa : a beautiful villa overlooking the sea. With its Creole decor, you’ll feel right at home! In a secluded setting, you’ll enjoy the magnificent scenery in complete tranquility.
  • Villa Des Flots : a magnificent authentic villa in a little corner of paradise, far from everything. Ideal for a vacation away from the tourist crowds, you’ll simply be cut off from the world in the heart of Seychelles nature.

To help you choose where to stay in La Digue , I recommend you read our dedicated article.

sunset in seychelles

The archipelago boasts some magnificent spots for exploring coral reefs , surfing, paddling, kayaking and more! With pleasant temperatures all year round, you can dive or snorkel at any time of the year. However, if you’re looking for sea turtles, look out for them between March and May, and manta rays between September and November! It’s up to you, depending on your preferences. Either way, you won’t be disappointed!

In addition to diving and water sports, you can hike all year round in Seychelles. But the best time for hiking is from May to November. During these 6 months, you’re less likely to have unpleasant surprises along the way and come back soaking wet! You’ll be more relaxed. Trust me, the tropical rains are intense!

Festivals and Cultural Events

If you’re more of a party person or interested in all things cultural, here’s a small selection of events you might enjoy:

  • Festival Créole aux Seychelles : You’ll love this festival! In fact, get ready for a jam-packed program: Creole music, dance, local cuisine, concerts… and many other surprises! If you’re tempted, plan your trip for late October.
  • Victoria International Carnival : The Victoria International Carnival is known for its atmosphere! There are parades, dance shows and other entertainment. It’s a great way to add a festive touch to your Seychelles vacation. If you’re interested, make your reservations for April.

Festivals and events are held in Victoria, Mahé. To find out more, read our article on what to do and see in Victoria, the capital of Seychelles.

choosing the season for the seychelles

Plan a multi-island cruise

With a total of 115 islands , it’s tempting to explore them all! A cruise is a great way to make the most of it and stop at several islands. What’s more, cruising offers great value for money : accommodation, travel and food are all included in the same package! Seychelles cruises are available all year round. But the ideal time for this type of vacation is from April to November, during the dry season. It’s much nicer to cruise in calm weather than in rough seas!

After everything we’ve seen: the weather, the climate, the activities, the tourist numbers, if you ask me, the best time to visit Seychelles is April-May and October-November. These are the low seasons! It’s during these periods that you’ll have the most pleasant climate, you’ll be able to see turtles and manta rays, and what’s more, it’s low season. In my opinion these are the two perfect times!

I’ve come to the end of my article on the best time to visit the Seychelles . You now know all about the climate, weather, tourist numbers and activities in the Seychelles. I hope you’ve found all this information useful and that you now have some dates in mind to plan your dream vacation .

Speaking of dreams, if Praslin and La Digue are part of your Seychelles itinerary (I hope they are), I highly recommend reading our articles on these two islands.

See you soon for more discoveries,

When is the best time to visit Seychelles?

The best time to visit the Seychelles is in the transitional months, which include April, May, October and November. The temperatures are milder, with the humid northwest trade winds changing to the cooler southwest tradewinds, so the weather conditions are perfect. There are fewer crowds during these transitional periods so you won't have to fight your way to the beachside chairs.

When is the rainy season in the Seychelles?

The months with the highest levels of rainfall are December and January . January tends to be the rainiest, with about 300mm of rain throughout the month. However, the rain tends to be short and heavy, so there will be plenty of bursts of sunshine during your trip.

When to scuba dive in the Seychelles?

It’s always scuba diving time in the Seychelles, but unsurprisingly, the best conditions are in the transitional months, when the seas are calm and visibility is high. You can expect to spot butterflyfishes, spotted eagle rays and even green sea turtles.

Maldives vs Seychelles?

Both island getaways offer stunning scenery and a relaxing holiday experience, but it depends on what type of holiday you want. The Maldives is a hotspot for romantic trips, with all-inclusive resorts setting the bar high for a luxury holiday, and while there are plenty of luxury stays in the Seychelles, it is definitely an adventure lover's dream.

Best Time to Visit Seychelles in 2023 (Ultimate Traveler’s Guide)

' src=

One of my favorite destinations of all time is Seychelles where I enjoyed a solo 15-day trip. At the time I planned the trip, I had no idea what the best time to visit Seychelles is and just planned a trip near my birthday.

What’s more, I was getting an amazing offer on a flight from Mumbai to Seychelles so without a second thought, I booked it. Luckily for me, I ended up here during good weather so I could enjoy my time on the islands here.

If you are planning a trip to Seychelles, then make sure you check the weather and climate in Seychelles and then plan it. In this article, I have shared information on the best time to visit Seychelles, what you can expect in different months here, and how to travel around the islands during your trip.

Best Time to Visit Seychelles

Due to the trade winds that Seychelles experiences, the best time to visit Seychelles are between the months of April to May, and October to November. These are the transition months between these two trade winds and the weather is slightly mild and pleasant in Seychelles at the time.

In April and October, the weather in Seychelles is slightly calm and warm with negligible rainfall which makes it the perfect time for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The water temperature will be pleasant and you will be able to enjoy 30 meters plus visibility.

You can also enjoy other activities during these months such as sunbathing, bird-watching, swimming, and so on. So, if you are interested in water activities then these months are the best time to visit Seychelles.

On the other hand, if you don’t mind tropical showers, then you can plan a visit here during the months of December, January, July, and August. During the spring and fall season, it is offseason in Seychelles so you won’t have to encounter the large hordes of tourists.

So, if you wish to enjoy some quiet time on the beaches and find the cheapest accommodation deals then spring and fall is the best time to visit Seychelles.

Beaches in Seychelles

The average temperature in Seychelles ranges around 30°C throughout the year. So, this island nation experiences hot and humid climate most of the months. However, since Seychelles is situated just 7 degrees south of the Equator and is independently situated in the Indian Ocean, it is difficult to predict the weather here.

You simply cannot rely on the weather forecasts and have to be prepared for all kinds of weather during your trip here. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect and do during different months here:

January – March

This is the beginning of the summer season in Seychelles and the northwest trade winds start blowing around. As a result, one can experience a hot and humid climate here with high rainfall till February. You will still find a lot of tourists here during these months due to several festivals and events being conducted here including the Seychelles Marathon.

In March, you can see the northwest monsoon coming to an end but the temperature is still quite high around here. One of the best things to witness here during these months is the turtle hatchlings making their way from their nest to the ocean.

If you are interested in witnessing a sailing competition then plan a visit to Seychelles in January when the Seychelles Sailing Cup event is held here. During this time, you have a few activities open in Seychelles such as fishing, sailing, and snorkeling, and even diving starts from the month of March.

You will find the hotel and flight prices inflated during these months so book everything in advance to get the best packages and pricing.

April – May

As the humid northwest winds start blowing away from Seychelles and the southeast winds start making their way, the weather in Seychelles becomes slightly warm and mild. The temperature in Seychelles range between 27 – 29 degrees Celsius with a little breeze and rainfall.

April is the warmest month in Seychelles and the weather can be slightly hot and humid during these months. However, it is a good time to visit and you can also attend events such as Seychelles National Fishing Tournament and Carnaval International de Victoria here in April.

In April and May, you can also indulge in a lot of activities in Seychelles such as Bird-watching, diving, fishing, diving, hiking, sailing, snorkeling, surfing, and so on. During these months, you will also find the islands slightly deserted and cheaper hotel and flight rates. So, if you wish to plan a budget trip to Seychelles then this is definitely a good time to visit.

June – September

These are the months when the weather in Seychelles becomes a little cooler with less humidity and rainfall. So, this is the peak season to visit Seychelles to enjoy the cool, dry weather here and spend time on the beach. The temperature at the time usually ranges between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius and watching sunsets during these months is quite rewarding.

There are several events to attend during these months as well. You can plan a trip to attend the Seychelles Sea Turtle Festival and South East Monsoon Sailfish Tournament in August or the Seychelles Round Table Regatta in September.

If you enjoy adventurous activities such as surfing, hiking, diving, etc. then this is the best time to visit Seychelles. This is a popular time to visit Seychelles, especially the months of July and August so make sure you make your bookings in advance and be ready to pay high-season prices.

Also, the islands will be crowded with tourists but you will still be able to manage a few beaches that are beautiful and secluded.

October is undoubtedly the best time to visit Seychelles as you can indulge in many activities such as bird-watching, diving, fishing, sailing, and snorkeling at the time. Since this is the transition month, there are increased chances of rainfall and it is less windy at the time here.

This is also the month when the Hawksbill turtles start laying their eggs and you can also enjoy watching shark whales, migratory birds, etc. during this month. That’s not all, this is also the time when the SUBIOS Underwater Festival , La Digue Offshore Tournament , and Festival Kreol are celebrated here

In the SUBIOS Underwater Festival , they show many films, conduct several talks and competitions to display the extraordinary underwater life of Seychelles. And the Festival Kreol is a week-long celebration where they celebrate the Creole tradition and heritage.

Also, you can save a lot on the hotel and flight costs and will find more options available as it is an offseason to visit Seychelles.

This is the beginning of the northwest winds in Seychelles so the islands might receive occasional showers during this month. If you wish to avoid the wet season, then stay on the east side and be prepared for higher and humid temperature in Seychelles. This is also the month when you can still witness the Hawksbill turtles laying eggs and can enjoy sightings of the shark whales.

In November, you can also enjoy the International Fishing Competition in Seychelles which is definitely something to look forward to. Apart from that, you have several amazing things to do in Seychelles such as diving, fishing, sailing, snorkeling, and so on.

Although the weather in Seychelles in December is a little humid and there are greater chances of rainfall, it still receives tourists from around the world. This is the month when you will find turtles laying eggs on the beaches in Seychelles and locals celebrating several end-of-the-year festivals. If you want to celebrate New Year with a bang then you can definitely plan a visit to Seychelles in December.

In December, you can indulge in a few activities here as well such as fishing, sailing, and snorkeling.

Climate in Seychelles

Sailing in Seychelles

Seychelles is a tropical island that experiences a hot and humid climate throughout the year. However, there are different seasons that can be experienced here and here is everything you need to know about them:

Summer Season

The summer season Seychelles can be experienced between the months of December and March. This is also a heavy tourist season so the prices are high during this time for hotels and activities. However, if you are planning a summer vacation and don’t mind occasional showers then this is definitely the best time to visit Seychelles.

One thing to keep in mind when planning a vacation in Seychelles during this season is that December and January are the busiest months of the season. So, you need to book your accommodations in advance and plan the trip properly. If you are looking for a better month to chill out on the beaches in summer then February is a good time to visit.

Monsoon Season

The monsoon season in Seychelles usually lasts from November to March, December and January being the wettest months in Seychelles. So, if you are interested in dry vacation with plenty of sunbathing on the beach then you can plan a trip between May and July as those are the driest months in Seychelles.

You can still plan a trip to Seychelles in the monsoon season because most of the islands here aren’t in the cyclone belt. So, you don’t have to worry about any storms in this region. However, the weather in Seychelles in December is slightly more humid than the rest of the months due to the frequent showers. The rainfall is not excessive as in Mauritius or Maldives but it could definitely hamper your fun in Seychelles.

Winter Season

Honestly speaking, the best time to visit Seychelles is the winter season as it also happens to be the drier season to enjoy over here. The season lasts from May to October and it is a great time to plan a honeymoon trip here as well due to lower humidity than the rest of the year. The average temperature in Seychelles during this season is around 25 – 29 degrees Celsius in the winters.

July and August are the peak months in Seychelles so you will find a lot of tourists around here then and the prices are generally higher in the winter months. But it is also the best time to enjoy outdoor activities here such as surfing, scuba diving, bird-watching, and so on. If you are interested in exploring the islands and participating in water activities, then the weather in Seychelles in May is absolutely perfect for it.

Weather in Seychelles

Since Seychelles experiences a year-long tropical climate, you can plan a trip here anytime you want. However, different seasons will be suitable for different activities to do and will majorly depend on the month you choose to visit. You will also have to shortlist a few places to visit when in Seychelles according to the weather in Seychelles.

Seychelles’ weather is primarily governed by two trade winds: the hot and humid northwest trade winds and the cool southeast trade winds.

The northwest trade winds blow from October to March and the wind speed averages around 8 – 12 knots at the time. As for the southeast trade winds, they blow in the months of May to September when the wind speed averages around 10 – 20 knots, and the weather is slightly cooler and appropriate for sailing at the time.

These trade winds are also responsible for the seaweed build upon a few beaches, so you need to choose your beachside hotel carefully.

Anse Source D'Argent Beach

There is no particular best time to visit Seychelles as it depends on the places that you would like to visit and the things that you would like to do in Seychelles. However, I planned my trip during the month of May and it was definitely a pleasant time to visit. There were occasional showers but mostly the weather was clear and sunny during this time.

So, I could enjoy my time on the beaches here and could easily hike around the islands as well. Be sure to plan your trip well in advance if you wish to make the most of your trip here as well.

Best time to visit Seychelles

The Seychelles has a tropical climate so you should expect year-round high temperatures and a distinct rainy season as well as a dry season. The best time to visit the Seychelles is from April to May and from October to November because these months are usually drier and less windy than other times of the year. There are trade winds that blow between November and March and between December and April, and December to April is usually hotter but wetter than the rest of the year. The temperature rarely drops below the mid-20s in the Seychelles winter (June to August); in the summer (December to February) you can expect temperatures to rise to over 30 degrees Celsius. This warmer weather coincides with the wet season, but although showers might be heavy, they rarely stick around for too long. And if it’s raining on one side of your chosen island, it could be clear on the other. Thanks to its position in the open ocean far from any large land masses, it’s tough to predict the weather, especially in the long term, so you can’t take online forecasts as a given. Here’s our month-by-month guide to the Seychelles’ weather and climate.

Seychelles Weather

Apr - may, oct - nov, seychelles weather by month.

The Seychelles in January January is the height of summer when the temperatures, humidity and rainfall are at their highest. Despite this, December and January in the Seychelles are a popular time to travel due the holiday season. If you’d rather avoid the rain, it might be worth considering a trip to the Maldives instead as it’s one of the country’s driest months.

The Seychelles in February The rainy season continues into February but there is less precipitation than in January or December. February marks the middle of the Hawksbill turtle hatchling season which usually runs from January to March. Seeing hundreds of tiny hatchlings make their way to the water from their nests is an amazing spectacle but some beaches may be off limits to give them the best chance to survive.

The Seychelles in March We recommend visiting the Seychelles in March, particularly later in the month, as the northwest monsoon ends. This means that there’s less rain but the temperatures will still be high. Any rain tends to come in short sharp bursts and clears quickly.

The Seychelles in April With hardly any breeze, the temperatures rise in April – it’s one of the hottest times of the year. April also the driest and therefore one of the best months to visit the Seychelles. If you like diving or snorkelling, head to the Seychelles in April to make the most of the perfect underwater visibility. The higher temperatures may mean that your time is best spent in the shade of a palm tree or taking a dip in the Indian Ocean rather than hiking through the pristine forests.

The Seychelles in May With the return of the winds, this time from the southeast, humidity drops in May but the temperatures in the Seychelles remain in the high 20s or low 30s. It’s another great month for snorkelling or diving with warm waters and great visibility. There are still rain showers but these tend to pass quickly.

The Seychelles in June The temperatures drop slightly throughout the Seychelles in June, but they’re still up there in the mid-20s. The wind picks up during the month and you’ll start to see surfers and windsurfers out on the water.

The Seychelles in July July is another dry month but again the winds will have increased. Beaches on the islands’ north and west coasts will be relatively sheltered from the wind. Due to summer school holidays and monsoon season in some of our other favourite destinations like the Maldives and Thailand, this is a very popular time to visit the Seychelles. You should book well in advance of your trip.

The Seychelles in August August is another popular month in the Seychelles because of the European school holidays. It is usually quite dry, however, one of the windiest times of the year and the conditions on the south and east coasts of the islands may not be suitable for swimming. There could also be more seaweed washed up on the sand at this time.

The Seychelles in September The winds die down in September, but there’ll still be a cooling breeze coming from the south east. The temperature in the Seychelles is an average high of 27 degrees. As September marks the end of the school summer holidays in Europe, this is a great time to get a good deal but make the most of the drier and calmer weather.

The Seychelles in October If you like snorkelling and diving, October is the best time to visit the Seychelles. The underwater visibility is at its best this month as there’s a window of time between the south east and north west trade winds.

The Seychelles in November. The wind changes direction from the southeast to the northwest in November and rainfall amounts increase in November. The sea will still be relatively calm and the visibility for snorkelling and diving remains good.

The Seychelles in December The northwest trade winds that arrived in November bring the rain in December – there’s a reason why the islands are so lush and green. Although this is not the best time to visit weather-wise, it is a popular time of year to travel, particularly over the Christmas and New Year period.

Smaller, outlying islands of the Seychelles

When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

  • Month-by-month

The best time to visit the Seychelles is between April and May, or October and November, as these are the calmer periods between the two trade winds which hit the island each year. The northwest trade wind blows from November to March and the southeast wind from May to September. These winds cause seaweed to build up on some beaches, so it’s important to consider when choosing your hotel locations at different times of the year.

The temperature in the Seychelles is around 86°F all year round, with a mixture of sunshine and tropical showers, and sea breezes which disperse the humidity. However, the Seychelles’ positioning, just seven degrees south of the Equator and away from large land masses in the Indian Ocean, makes it very hard to predict the weather or rely on online forecasts.

Best time to visit the Seychelles: when to go and what to do

Whether you’re here to hit the beach, to dive, to party or for turtle-nesting season, our guide has everything you need to know.

good time to travel to seychelles

When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

T he best time to visit the Seychelles is in April and May or October and November. This is due to fewer rain showers and calmer seas. Weather patterns can vary greatly between the islands. The inner granitic isles tend to receive more rainfall than the outer coral islands.

Best month for wildlife spotting?

The Seychelles has been dubbed the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean”. October to December is nesting season for hawksbill turtles, and you can witness females excavating nests in the sand and laying up to 200 eggs at a time. Hatchlings tend to take their first tentative steps from January to late March. Several hotels, such as Constance Lemuria , have conservation programmes in place that visitors are encouraged to join.

As a general guide, bird-watchers should arrive in April or May for breeding season and from May to September for nesting. Keen to see the sooty terns who congregate in their hundreds of thousands on Bird Island? Migration takes place in September and October, so arrive before then. Meanwhile, divers hoping to glimpse the whale sharks that migrate past the northwest coast of Mahé should book for October and November.

Rainy season

The Seychelles has a tropical climate resulting in a reliable mix of sunshine and rain throughout the year. Showers intensify when the cooler, stronger southeast trade winds blow from May to September, and again when the humid less-forceful northwest trade winds visit the islands from October to March. Book a hotel on the east coasts of the islands to avoid the brunt of the latter. Come November monsoon season is in full swing, running until March, with December and January being the wettest months. However, even during this low season there are still frequent bursts of sunshine as the Seychelles sit outside the cyclone belt.

When is peak season?

Peak season in the Seychelles runs during its winter from May to August. Temperatures are still high — they hover around 29C throughout the year. However, at this point the southeast trade winds are starting to pick up, so it’s best to book accommodation on the sheltered west coasts of the islands.

When’s the best time to avoid seasonal seaweed?

Marooned in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles is exposed to various currents and trade winds and from May to October they cause sizeable quantities of seaweed to be deposited on the southeast and south coast beaches of the main islands. (In particular, Grand Anse on Praslin, Anse Royale on Mahé and Anse Reunion on the west coast of La Digue.) Most hotels offer complimentary shuttles to unaffected beaches during this time, but it may dash your hopes for holiday photos featuring pristine white-sand beaches. For the rest of the year, Mahé is normally clear, but Praslin may continue to have the odd seaweed-drifting event.

For diving, aim for April, October and November when the sea is calmer (Alamy)

Best month for diving?

Diving and snorkelling are possible year-round. However, if you can, aim for April, October and November — the relative lull between the trade winds brings calmer seas, so operators reach the more remote diving locations and the absence of rain doesn’t churn up the water, resulting in visibility of up to 30 metres. It’s best to avoid travel in July and August when the ocean is at its choppiest.

Sunshine and rainfall

The sun shines throughout the year, averaging six hours a day. However, short sharp rain showers (2,172mm annually) can come at any time. As a rule of thumb, April is the driest month and January the wettest.

Carnaval International de Victoria (Getty Images)

Key dates for your calendar

February Dance and make merry at the annual three-day Carnaval International de Victoria held on the island of Mahé during the first two weeks of the month. Over the long weekend, locals and visitors dress to impress and let loose at open-air discos, live shows and a wacky parade of flotillas. With more and more international countries being represented here each year, it’s been deemed a worthy rival to Brazil’s famous Rio de Janeiro carnival — this is not one to miss.

September Prepare to loosen your belt a few notches at the three-day Praslin Arts Fiesta biennale. It’s set up to rival the Carnaval International de Victoria on Mahé and sees the Baie Sainte Anne district taken over by an open bazaar of farmers and local bakery stalls selling their produce, alongside craft stalls showcasing the work of local artists. Burn off all the extra calories by joining the final fiesta marathon.

Festival Kreol (Alamy)

October The biggest party of the year is undoubtedly Festival Kreol, a joyous six-day celebration held across the islands — but predominantly around Mahé’s main beaches of Beau Vallon and Anse Royale — during the last week of October. It celebrates and cements the islands’ colourful Creole culture with art exhibitions, theatre and dancing, with kitchens dishing out curries taking over virtually every public space on the island, from hotels and conference halls to beaches. The finale is a raucous parade through the streets of the capital, Victoria, with everyone donning woven palm-leaf hats, brash hibiscus-patterned shirts and grooving to island beats.

Mushroom-shaped champignons rock formations, Aldabra (Alamy)

December Dive into the three-day Seychelles Ocean Festival (formerly known as Subios), hosted to celebrate and promote the conservation of the islands’ marine biodiversity. Events centre around Mahé’s northern beach of Beau Vallon and include snorkelling and scuba-diving trips, a beach clean-up, exhibitions of underwater photography and a sandcastle-building competition for kids.

Rain in the Seychellen

When is the rainy season in the seychelles.

Most Seychelles holidaymakers ask when the rainy season is. In general, the Seychelles sees short rain showers almost every day, usually during the night, and this contributes to the beautiful greenery of the islands. There is the most rainfall in the months of December to February, with December and January seeing 9 - 10 rainy days and around 300 mm of precipitation, making them the rainiest months. The Seychelles are located outside of cyclone ranges, so you shouldn’t expect any storms.

What can you do when it rains in the Seychelles?

The evergreen nature of the Seychelles is not an accident! There are showers almost every day, but they tend to be short. If it rains for a longer time, which can happen in December and January, it is worth visiting the various art galleries on the island! The large hotels and resorts also offer cooking courses where you can prepare delicious Creole cuisine. Finally, swimming in the ocean as it is raining is actually a wonderful experience as the ocean water tends to be much warmer than the rain!

FAQs about the Seychelles Climate

When is there seaweed in the seychelles.

The south-east trade winds between May and the start of October bring with them lots of seaweed to the island of Praslin. This of course affects the pristine surface of the beaches, but is actually a good thing as it shows that the underwater world around the Seychelles is in really good condition. In the picture here you can see the beaches on Praslin where you will find seaweed during this time. If you want to avoid that, you can visit the beaches on the other side of the island, which are generally free from seaweed. An exception here would be Anse Volbert (Cote d’Or) in the north of Praslin. Between December and February, the north-west trade winds bring some seaweed to these shores.

The following beaches are affected by seaweed from May to October on Praslin:

What is the water temperature in the Seychelles?

The water temperatures in the Seychelles range from 23 - 28°C throughout the year. The coldest temperatures are between July and September, while October - June sees consistent temperatures from 25 - 28°C.

Sunrise and sunset in the Seychelles doesn’t vary much throughout the year, only by around 30 minutes in total. In January, the sun rises at around 6:15 and sets at 18:40, while in June these times change to 6:30 and 18:15 respectively. Spectacular sunset views throughout the year are a real highlight of any Seychelles holiday!

When is the cheapest time to travel to the Seychelles?

We are often asked when it is cheapest to travel to the Seychelles. Due to their equatorial location, the climate doesn’t vary much throughout the year, so there is also not much in terms of price changes from accommodations, and there is no classic peak season or off season. In general, holidays outside of European holiday times are cheaper. We also recommend that you don’t wait too long to book, as accommodations become fully booked so you might miss out!

Travelers who want to avoid the busy travel season should not visit the Seychelles Islands during the summer months between June-August. These are the most popular months to visit the islands, so tourists can expect many more people in Victoria City, on the beaches, or joining the tours.

Visiting Seychelles In The Spring

Spring is one of the most beautiful seasons in the Seychelles. It’s the season following the rainy season, so the islands are at their most vibrant, with vegetation-covered cliffs, lush jungles, and colorful flowers everywhere.

The Seychelles transitions from wet season to dry season during the spring. The months of March, April, May are some travelers’ favorites to benefit from the hot weather remaining from the previous months, but without the rain. The tropical climate gives it hot days reaching highs in the mid-80s, although there can be more clouds remaining until whisked away by the soon-to-come tradewinds.

April is one of the shoulder months in Seychelles with very little rain and winds. It’s the peak of the transition season. It’s an excellent time to go scuba diving in the warm water temperatures. It’s one of the best times to experience the lush greenery blooming inside the Victoria Botanical Gardens or relax on the sandy shores of Petite Anse.

Visiting The Seychelles In The Summer

To encounter the best Seychelles weather, the best time to visit is during the summer. Known to have the ideal tropical climate, tourists can enjoy moderate temperatures in the mid-70s, cooled by the southeast trade winds. Temperatures in the Seychelles during the fall months are comfortable between 70-80°F. In September, the southeast trade winds begin to fade, and in November, the northwest monsoon winds begin arriving. Visiting in October will give the best weather conditions with calm waters for scuba diving and snorkeling.

The fall season is the best time to enjoy the beaches in The Seychelles. There are much fewer tourists crowding the shores of Beau Vallon Bay and Anse Source d’Argent to give them a more secluded atmosphere. Alternatively, trek the tropical jungles on Bird Island for one of the best times of year for birdwatching.

Exciting public festivals and holidays happening in the Seychelles during the fall months make towns like Victoria City and other attractions lively with energy. In September, get a taste of the island at the Praslin Culinary & Arts Festival, or immerse yourself in the creole culture at Festival Kreole in October, or learn about island conservation efforts during the Ocean Festival.

Visiting The Seychelles In The Winter

Tropical weather averaging in the high 70s is always an excellent alternative to roughing it through the snowy winter months. But while it’s winter for many snowbirds arriving in the Seychelles from abroad, December-February is actually summer on the islands.

Arrive just in time to trade in your heavy jackets and snow boots for bathing suits and hiking boots. Winter travel to the Seychelles will let you arrive during one of the hottest, humid times of the year. But aside from the hot weather, there is one natural phenomenon to be mindful of during this season: monsoons.

December until February are the peak of the rainy season in the Seychelles. These are the wettest months, and you can experience heavy showers every day. Weather forecasts usually show daily rainstorms, but this unpredictable weather usually only lasts briefly before the sun re-emerges to dry up the wet island.

Winter is the perfect time to travel to the Seychelles. The heavy rainfall makes it ideal for seeing the different palm species in Vallée de Mai or the coconut plantation on La Digue. Victoria City is always exciting, with holiday visitors enjoying the local market, tea factory tours, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rainy season in seychelles.

The Seychelles Islands have two seasons: rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season is the shortest time of year, lasting from December to February, which is considered summertime in the Seychelles. This season is also the warmest and most humid time of year to visit the islands.

Rainy season happens in Seychelles because of the nearby monsoons arriving in the area at this time of year. In addition to northwest trade winds, the weather is very unpredictable during the wet months.

Seychelles has a tropical climate and rains all year long. On average, tourists can expect a short rain shower every day before the beautiful weather returns for the rest of the day. However, during the rainy season, the islands can get much heavier rains that last longer throughout the day.

Rain has never stopped tourists from visiting the Seychelles. December is one of the most popular times to visit the islands, which coincides with the rainy season.

What is the hottest month in Seychelles?

The popularity of the Seychelles as a year-round travel destination is thanks in part to its tropical climate. While tourist destinations in Europe and the US get cold and snowy during the winter, it’s the summertime in Seychelles, where the weather is in the 70-80s.

The cool breezes felt in the Seychelles are always refreshing. Tradewinds from different regions arrive throughout the year to cool off the islands. The hottest month in the Seychelles in April. April is a shoulder month in-between seasons. On average, the hottest time of year is during the rainy season, but much of the weather remains on the island until the trade winds arrive once again in May. The still air in the islands and humidity make it feel hotter.

How many days are enough to visit Seychelles?

Seychelles is a group of remote islands in the Indian Ocean. Travelers should expect to spend at least one week on the islands to take advantage of all they have to offer.

The remote location of the islands makes them accessible only via airplane or boat. Reaching the islands can take several hours of travel and must be accounted for during your trip.

Most people arriving in the Seychelles are immediately captivated by its beauty. Five to seven days is an excellent amount of time to visit Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue and still have time for side trips to other locations like Silhouette Island and Bird Island.

The Seychelles Islands have unpredictable weather all year long. While some times of year are better for avoiding rain, it’s still a frequent occurrence. In case rain cancels some of your travel plans, having a few extra days on the island is helpful for rescheduling and making sure you do everything on your island bucket list.

Which is better the Maldives or the Seychelles?

The Maldives and the Seychelles Islands are often confusing for travelers. Both are island countries consisting of archipelagos; however, the Seychelles has 115 islands, and the Maldives has over 1,100. In addition, the island chains are both in the Indian Ocean, and many of the remote islands may be confused for belonging to the other country.

So, which is the better place to visit for a vacation? The Seychelles Islands and the Maldives offer similar tropical island experiences, so both can make excellent vacation destinations. The Seychelles has larger islands and more tourist activities focusing on experiencing the natural beauty on the island with hiking, snorkeling, and sightseeing. The Maldives is made up of several smaller islands, many with luxury, upscale resorts established on them to give their guests a relaxing getaway in privacy.

What are the best beaches in Seychelles?

White sand beaches tucked between granite rocks and verdant cliffs define much of the coastline of the Seychelles Islands. Whether visiting one of the main islands like Mahé and Praslin or chartering a private yacht to a remote island for an exclusive beach experience, the Seychelles islands have beaches to suit every traveler.

Go island hopping to visit the best beaches in Seychelles. While visiting Mahé, take a short drive from the capital to reach the popular Beau Vallon Bay or enjoy views of the large granite boulders decorating the shores of Anse Intendance. Catch a ferry to Praslin, where you’ll find Anse Lazio Beach and Anse Georgette. The best beach on La Digue is Anse Source d’Argent.

Each beach has unique characteristics and different times of year preferred to visit. For example, some shores may experience rougher currents during windy months, while the most popular beaches can get crowded with tourists during the peak season.
