Tohoku Japan Travel Guide

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Tohoku (Japan)

Hello there – we are Sarah and Eric. Together we co-run Chopsticks on the Loose ( @chopsticksontheloose ) and work as travel photographers and content creators. Thanks for checking out our Tohoku, Japan travel guide.

We grew up in two different parts of the world. Sarah grew up in Hong Kong while Eric was born in the UK. Although Sarah later moved to the UK with her family. Our love of travel came from the desire to learn about cultures as well as capturing moments in time with photography .

It was in London at a friend’s birthday party that we met. The rest, as they say, was history. Chopsticks on the Loose came about a couple of years later when we decided to leave our 9-5 jobs behind and travel full-time.

The Instagram page and blog were originally a way for us to stay connected to our friends and family and to share what we were getting up to. It has now grown to a community of 22,000 followers and we couldn’t be happier.

Tohoku Japan Travel Guide

One Year Journey through Japan

We decided to spend a year in Japan to explore every region and experience all four seasons. We dubbed it the “Journey through Japan”.

After some helpful advice from locals, we made plans to visit the Tohoku region during autumn. We were told the northern region had some of the most impressive nature scenes. They were totally right about that.

We spent 8 days exploring Tohoku. Getting around this region is a little tricky using public transport as it’s less connected compared to other parts of Japan. This was especially true in the remote areas of Tohoku that we wanted to explore. In the end, we rented a car and went roadtrippin’ .

Takachiho Gorge

Favourite Place in Tohoku: Yamadera Temple

We spent most of our time in Tohoku out in nature. So there weren’t many opportunities for us to meet locals. Although the locals we did meet were all incredibly friendly. One thing to keep in mind is that people don’t speak English in this region as it’s an area less frequented by travellers.

Tohoku is a treasure trove of incredible places to visit. Our favourite place was Yamadera Temple which is a thousand-year-old temple situated on a steep mountainside. It’s a short hike to the top but it’s a magical experience, especially when the temple is surrounded by autumn leaves.

Tohoku, Japan Travel Guide: Top 10 Experiences

The Tohoku region is made up of six prefectures (Aomori, Akita, Fukushima , Iwate, Miyagi and Yamagata) in the north of Japan’s largest island. Tourists and Japanese are drawn to Tohoku for its beautiful countryside, mountains and lakes , hot springs, historical sights and culinary delights.

Below you can find our top 10 recommendations for this Tohoku, Japan travel guide:

1. See the Autumn Colours of Tohoku

Autumn is a special time of year in Tohoku as the region lights up in colour. The trees become so colourful that the mountains, forests and parks all glow with this fiery red and gold hue. Some of the best autumn destinations are Mount Hakkoda (Aomori) and Oyasu Ravine (Akita).

2. Visit the Scenic Yamadera Temple

As mentioned before, the Yamadera Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in all of Japan. The temple is located in the mountains northeast of Yamagata City and extends high up a steep mountainside. Its name “Yamadera” literally translates to “mountain temple” in Japanese.

3. Chase the Majestic Waterfalls of Tohoku

Tatsuzawafudo Falls and Akiu Waterfall are just two examples of stunning waterfalls in the Tohoku region. The former is located in Inawashiro Town and is made up of two waterfalls – Odaki (the male fall) and Medaki (the smaller female fall). The latter, Akiu is another beauty located in Sendai.

4. Take a Boat Ride at Geibikei Gorge

Geibikei is a 2km long gorge carved out by the Satetsu River in Iwate Prefecture. The gorge makes for an awesome boat ride experience. Sit back and relax as you float down this gorge while your boatman paddles and sings old folk songs. Cliffs here tower overhead at heights of 50-100 metres.

Geibikei Gorge

5. Discover the Former Post Town of Ouchijuku

Visiting Ouchijuku feels like you’ve been transported back to the Japan of olden times. This former post town was once situated along the Aizu-Nishi Kaido trade route. The architecture here is defined by thick-thatched roof buildings which house shops, restaurants and minshuku (traditional inns).

Ouchijuku

6. Explore the Secluded Town of Ginzan Onsen

Ginzan Onsen was one of the locations that inspired the Studio Ghibli movie Spirited Away. The town is a hot spring destination nestled in the mountains of Yamagata. It’s best known for its historic ryokan (traditional Japanese inns featuring tatami-matted rooms) lined along the river.

Ginzan Onsen

7. Stay at the Beautiful Obara Onsen

Obara Onsen was our favourite onsen in Japan. If you’re looking for a truly authentic onsen experience then this is it. The hot spring is nestled alongside the Shiroishi River. Its colourless and odourless waters are believed to have magical healing powers for the thousands of guests that visit each year.

8. Climb to the Okama Crater at Mount Zao

Mount Zao is one of the most impressive mountains in Tohoku standing at a height of 1840 metres. The mountain sits on the border between the Yamagata and Miyagi Prefectures. Near the summit of Mount Zao is the surreal crater lake Okama Crater which you can view from a distance.

9. Marvel at the Bhuddist Enzoji Temple

The Enzoji Temple is a Buddhist temple located in the small town of Yanaizu. This is the birthplace of the lucky red cow of Fukushima known as ‘Akabeko’. The heritage of this temple goes back over 1,200 years and was constructed in a similar style to the Buddhist Kiyomizudera temples in Kyoto with large balconies.

10. Visit the Goshikinuma Lakes in Autumn

This group of beautiful lakes in Fukushima come alive when the autumn foliage starts. Each lake displays its own distinctive colour due to the volcanic elements and minerals that were spawned when Mt. Bandai erupted over 100 years ago. These colours and hues change depending on the season you visit.

Tohoku, Japan Travel Guide: Culinary Treats

The food in Tohoku is spectacular just like most of Japan. However, there is one particular treat that you have to try. Dango is a popular sweet rice dumpling and in Tohoku you can find something called the Flying Dango!

At the Genbikei Gorge one shop has decided to install a rope which delivers Dango in a wooden basket to customers in the middle of the gorge. After putting your money in the basket which sits on a cable overhanging the gorge, you knock the wooden board and your order is ready to go.

Watch your basket get pulled up to the shop across the gorge and then wait until it comes flying back down with dango and tea inside. You can try one of three different types of flavours: goma (sesame), mitarashi (sweet soy sauce) and an (red bean paste).

It’s one awesome and delicious experience!

Funny Memories Bathing at Obara Onsen

Our favourite memory from our time in Tohoku would have to be bathing at Obara Onsen. The onsen is set in a cave with the river water naturally flowing in and out (hence why no soap is allowed here). The only people you’ll find there are friendly Japanese locals who love to chat.

Trying to communicate using only hand gestures to naked locals will be a memory we’ll never forget. Just thinking about it makes us laugh!

Tohoku, Japan Travel Guide: Tips for your Visit

Tohoku is a large region so it’s important to plan your visit before going. Otherwise you could find yourself spending more time travelling than experiencing the region. Since it’s a nature focused place, we’d also recommend timing your trip with a particular season that interests you.

The region is beautiful all year round and the activities you do and scenes you see may change depending on the time of year. For example, Okama Crater is not open during the winter season but you can still see the heavily snow-covered trees of Mount Zao (also known as snow monsters).

That’s it from us – the duo behind Chopsticks on the Loose. We hope you enjoyed reading our Tohoku Japan travel guide. Enjoy your travels!

Thrilling Tohoku

April 10, 2024 by Robert Schrader Leave a Comment

Whether you’ve come here searching for a comprehensive Tohoku travel itinerary, or are simply seeking general information about Japan’s exciting northeastern region, you’re in the right place. I’m excited to share anecdotes and advice about my various Tohoku trips with you, and to get you as excited about this underrated part of Japan as I’ve always been.

Likewise, the paragraphs that follow aren’t specific to any one season, even if many of my photos depict Tohoku winter travel. As is the case for most other destinations in Japan , Tohoku is nothing if not a place you can enjoy 365 days per year.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the amazing region that is Tohoku, Japan, in all its cultural and natural glory. I have a feeling you’ll soon be booking flights! (Assuming you haven’t done so before clicking through to my Tohoku itinerary.)

Where to Stay in Tohoku

You’ve probably gleaned from my various Tohoku travel blog posts that I’m ambivalent about certain Tohoku hotels. This is especially true in cities. From Morioka’s Art Hotel to the Almont Hotel in Sendai, it’s very difficult to distinguish urban accommodation in one Tohoku city from another. (Note that this is not necessarily a problem: All are high-quality and fairly priced, to say nothing of how large rooms tend to be by Japanese standards.)

On the other hand, if your Tohoku travel itinerary takes you to more rural places, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how special your sleeping quarters will be. At least if you aren’t on much of a budget. Whether you choose Shouan in Miyagi prefecture’s scenic Matsushima Bay, or Meigetsuso in the wooded hills of Yamagata prefecture, it’s not an exaggeration to say that Tohoku’s best hotels can costs you tens of thousands of yen per night!

Popular Places to Visit in Tohoku

tohoku travel books

Sendai is the largest city in Tohoku, and one of the most commonly visited, but I didn’t appreciate it for a long while. I’m glad I changed my tune . From city center attractions like Zuihoden Temple and the Aoba Castle Ruins , to day trips to wondrous spots like Matsushima Bay and Shiogama Shrine , Sendai far exceed anything you’re expecting from a visit there. Miyagi is also the prefecture where you find the internet-famous Zao Fox Village , although I’ll be frank: I wouldn’t really recommend you visit here .

tohoku travel books

TIP: Visiting Japan during the summer? Consider coming to Sendai in early August, when the annual Tanabata Matsuri adds a festive feeling (and some fireworks!) to the city.

tohoku travel books

If you’re on the hunt for Tohoku cherry blossoms , there’s no place better to go than Hirosaki Castle (which is also excellent in other seasons, including winter, as I recently learned ). Located in Aomori prefecture about an hour south of Aomori city (which is also very worth visiting, especially if you like Japanese festival floats or fresh apples), Hirosaki Castle is world-famous for the so-called “petal moat” phenomenon, which occurs about a week past the peak of the sakura . In most years, this occurs during the last days of April or the first days of May. If you have extra time, I’d also recommend touring sake-breweries in Hachinohe at the beginning of the Sanriku Coast , or visiting scenic attractions such as Lake Towada and Oirase Stream .

tohoku travel books

Another place with attractions high on my list of things to do in Tohoku is Kakunodate . Conveniently located along the Akita Shinkansen line, this charming town is full of former Samurai houses and temples, and is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season. Of course, it’s only the beginning of Akita prefecture , which also includes the monster-infested Oga Peninsula , some of Japan’s best ski fields and of course, Akita City .

tohoku travel books

Next up on the list of Tohoku travel destinations is Iwate , whose capital Morioka is a charming riverside city whose humble skyline rises beneath the prefecture’s namesake Mt. Iwate . Once you finish eating famous Jajamen noodles in Morioka city, you can continue off the beaten path of Iwate , whether that entails seeing sakura at Kitakami Tenshochi park, marveling at the Dragon Eye of Hachimantai , taking a dip at Jodogahama Beach in Miyako along the Sanriku Coast or going back in time in Hiraizumi , one of the oldest towns in Japan.

tohoku travel books

As I mentioned in the intro to this post with regard to the timing of your Tohoku itinerary, winter is a popular time—even if you don’t ski. Which is not to say that the snow monsters Mount Zao are the only thing to do in Yamagata prefecture. Cherry blossoms abound in Yamagata City in spring, while actual cherries grow in the town of Sagae starting from early June. Although Yamadera temple (along the Senzan Line back to Sendai) is at its most stunning during the autumn, it’s also delightful during the summer months. Furthermore, Yamagata is home to the coastal city of Sakata , a charming center of sake breweries, Geisha tea houses and so few tourists you’ll feel like it belongs to you !

tohoku travel books

Fukushima is perhaps Japan’s most misunderstood prefecture, for reasons that should be obvious to you if you were alive and sentient in 2011. However, in addition to the fact that Fukushima-ken is definitely not still radioactive, it happens to be a treasure trove for travelers. I recommend basing yourself in Aizu-wakamatsu , a castle town where you can dine on sauce katsu before venturing to more distant destinations, be they the Ouchi-juku old street, the Goshikinuma five-colored ponds or Tadami Bridge.

tohoku travel books

TIP: Although my pictures show Fukushima mostly during autumn color season, the spring is also a great time to visit! In addition to cherry blossoms (duh!), the prefecture is also one of the most famous places in Japan for peach blossoms, and is a great addition to any Japan Tohoku itinerary in general.

The Best Time to Visit Tohoku

You’ve probably noticed that my Tohoku travel guide focuses much more on spring and winter than other seasons. However, I also love visiting Tohoku in autumn and summer, and I’ll now reference specific destinations that make me feel that way. My favorite autumn color spots in Tohoku, for example, include Mount Hakkoda in Aomori prefecture and Naruko-kyo Gorge in the wilds of Miyagi prefecture.

You say you’re planning a Tohoku region itinerary for the summer ? Many of my favorite summer destinations in Tohoku is actually located a stone’s throw from my favorite winter ones. Indeed, Tohoku hosts as many summer hikes as it does opportunities for winter skiing, my favorites of which include Mount Iwaki in Aomori prefecture and Mount Iide , which actually straddles three prefectures.

Other FAQ About Tohoku Travel

What is tohoku known for.

In popular culture, Tohoku is unfortunately known primarily for the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster. For travelers, however, Tohoku is known as a wonderland of snow monsters (Mt. Zao), onsen (Tsuru No Yu) and ski slopes (in Akita, Niigata and elsewhere), as well as underrated cities like Sendai, Morioka and Aomori.

Is Tohoku safe?

Tohoku is one of the safest places in Japan, which is one of the least dangerous countries in the world even in its most “dangerous” reaches. While there’s always the risk of an earthquake anywhere in Japan, the chances of a strong or certainly catastrophic one befalling you are minimal. Likewise, unless you plan to hang out in the small nuclear exclusion zone, there is no risk of radiation from Fukushima.

How far is Sendai from Tokyo?

Sendai is about 90 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen . ANA offers a couple of daily NRT-SDJ flights, which take less than an hour, but these are impractical given how long it takes to get from central Tokyo to Narita Airport—it’s faster just to take the train!

The Bottom Line

If you weren’t excited to plan your Tohoku itinerary before you arrived here, chances are that you are now. Rather than telling you precisely where to go or what to do, my goal with this page has been to inspire you, and to stoke your curiosity for digging deeper into this underrated, rich region. This is not to say you can’t assemble a complete trip using the information I’ve shared—you absolutely can. On the other hand, if you would rather truth someone else (namely me) to sweat the details, commission a custom Japan itinerary today .

Tohoku Region Travel Guide

Tohoku

Japan, generally associated with bustling cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto, provides visitors with an array of experiences. Tohoku , on the other hand, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered for those looking for a quieter, more traditional side of Japan. Located in the northern area of Honshu island below Hokkaido, the Tohoku region has a population of 8.5 million inhabitants and is composed of six prefectures: Akita , Aomori , Fukushima , Iwate , Miyagi , and Yamagata .

Visiting Tohoku allows discovering various traditional activities. Among them, pilgrimage to Dewa Sanzan , 3 sacred mountains located in Yamagata Prefecture, or experience the natural onsen of Ginzan , perfect for rejuvenation.

With its historical as well as modern relevancy, Tohoku is a region not to be missed during your visit to Japan!

Japanese traditional beauty in Tohoku

Tohoku is packed with places full of history: Buddhist temples , Shinto shrines , traditional wooden houses, and feudal castles. These will let you discover the Japan of the past, the time of the samurais, and the clan wars.

In Iwate prefecture, the temples, gardens, and archeological sites of the city of Hiraizumi , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are full of stories. Formerly the capital of the northern part of Honshu Island , it is now a testimony to the past of the Tohoku region.

The old town of Kakunodate has remained almost unchanged since its creation in the 17th century . Its samurai district , one of the best preserved in Japan, is the witness of an important page of the traditional aspect of Japan. An opportunity to go back to the past!

Founded in 860, the Yamadera temple is nestled on the mountainside of Yamagata Prefecture and offers a breathtaking view of the green valley below and the surrounding mountains. Not to be missed during your visit to the area.

Finally, Ôuchi-juku village in Fukushima Prefecture has been very popular since the Edo period . Its ancient thatched houses have been protected until today, giving the village a time capsule appearance.

We recommend visiting these places to witness the rich history of the region

The nature of northeastern Japan

Composed of six of the most rural prefectures in Japan, the Tohoku region is blessed with great nature , ideal for walking and hiking . Get away from the big cities for a while and take a breath of fresh air north of the many mountains by discovering the national parks and other natural beauties offered by the region.

Located about 40 minutes by train from Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture , Matsushima Bay is home to more than 200 small rocky and wooded islands. It is considered one of the three most beautiful scenic spots in Japan on par with Amanohashidate , the "bridge of heaven" of Chugoku, and the very famous Miyajima .

Tohoku region has many mountains, valleys, and rivers. It is there that you can admire the most beautiful gorges of Japan: Oyasu Gorge , Dakigaeri Gorge , or Genbikei and Geibikei Gorge .

The most impressive one is located in Aomori prefecture, where a river taking its source in Towada lake has formed Oirase Gorge . Surrounded by lush woods and dotted with waterfalls, this place has inspired painters and poets for centuries. It is a particularly recommended place for hiking and biking enthusiasts.

Where to see the cherry blossoms in Tohoku?

Cherry blossoms are one of the most distinctive symbols of Japan and their arrival at the end of winter brings a festive wind to the country every year! Their blossoming kicks off Hanami, a Japanese tradition of picnicking with family, friends, or colleagues under the branches of cherry blossoms.

When spring arrives, you will find exceptional places to go and admire the pink petals of the cherry blossoms:

One of the most emblematic locations of Tohoku is Aomori Prefecture’s Hirosaki Park and the eponymous castle located within it. The castle was originally built in the 1600s but rebuilt in 1810. During the Hirosaki cherry blossom festival , the scene of the castle, within the backdrop of a bright crimson bridge with the cherry blossoms surrounding the scene is like no other. Also within the castle grounds is a botanical garden with exotic animals such as peacocks and the Hirosaki City Museum.

The Kitakami Cherry Blossom Festival   At the Kitakami River in Iwate Prefecture, two of the most prominent events of spring are combined; Hanami and Children’s Day. With the calming pink of the sakura lining the riverbank, koinobori (carp-shaped windsocks used to commemorate Children’s Day) are strung up above creating a cheerful scene and environment.

Fukushima Prefecture is home to another iconic castle of the Tohoku Region: Tsuruga-jo Castle in Aizu . Being at this site since the early 1300s, this castle and its groun ds are filled with history. Many canals also run through the grounds with the cherry blossom trees lining them, creating a distinctively Japanese spring-time scene that as picturesque as it is beautiful in person.

Also in Fukushima Prefecture, there exists one of  the Nihon Godaizakura , which are the oldest, largest and most famous cherry trees in Japan.

The Miharu Takizakura was planted more than 1,000 years ago and today it reaches 12 meters in height with a diameter of 20 meters. This tree is very impressive when its branches bloom millions of pink flowers at the arrival of spring.

Where to see autumn leaves in Japan?

The abundance of nature in Tohoku makes it an amazing spot for seeing the autumn leaves (called koyo 紅葉 in Japanese). In Japan especially, the autumn season scenery is breathtaking, with blankets of vibrant gold and burgundy flowing throughout the forests and valleys.

One of the best places to see the koyo is Lake Towada in Aomori . During fall, the pristine waters reflect the golden foliage of the trees, creating a beautiful reverse-mirror effect that incredible to see both in person and in pictures.

Head down to Fukushima to Tsuchiyu Onsen , a hot spring town nestled within a valley that's filled with folliage, essentially surrounding those in the town with shades of yellow and crimson during the cooler months.

Finally, one of Miyagi Prefecture's most famous natural attractions is that of Naruko Onsen . The rolling valleys of this area are gorgeous to see during fall and the number of high bridges above them makes the scenery vast. Be sure to stay over and relax in the onsens as you take in the amazing nature that Miyagi has to offer!

Summer Festivals in Tohoku

During summer in Japan, a medley of unique festivals occur throughout the country, and Tohoku is home to some of the most distinct and vibrant of these matsuri. From the end of June to mid-July, travelers can go from prefecture to prefecture and tour around the different festivals.

In Akita Prefecture, the Kanto Festival involves a precession of festival participants carrying large floats that consist of numerous lanterns hanging from a pole. These floats are unlike any other as they are actually carried by hand and handled in extravagant ways with carriers balancing the floats on their hands, through the belt loops of their traditional clothing, and sometimes even on their foreheads! It's really a site that must be seen in person to believe.

In Sendai, one of the largest Tanabata Festivals occurs on July 7th. Major parts of the city are adorned with bright and colorful streamers, filling the entire city with festival spirit. Of course, food stalls and activities for children can be found all over as well. While Tanabata is celebrated all over the country and world wherever there is a prominent Japanese diaspora, the festivites in Sendai are some of the most memorable to experience in person.

Likely the most well-known festival in all of Tohoku, and arguably Japan, is that of the Nebuta Festival all the way up in Aomori Prefecture. Spanning 5 days from August 2nd to August 7th, much of downtown Aomori City is closed off at night to make way for the enormous Nebuta floats that define the festival. These floats are like any other seen during the summer festivals. Aside from being notably large, they are incredibly ornate and colorful, designed in great detail after historic shogun . The floats are illuminated with internal lamps that cause them to glow brightly during the night time precessions. If there is one festival that cannot be missed in Tohoku, it is Nebuta!

Winter activities in Tohoku

Moving on from summer to the colder months, Tohoku's northern location on Honshu means it's a region that sees a good amount of snowfall. This makes Tohoku an especially noteworthy destination during this time.

Zao in Yamagata is a famous destination for winter sports. Every year, ski and snowboard enthusiasts flock from around Japan and the world to ride down the snowy slopes of this area. At the same, visitors to this area can warm back up at the many onsen hot springs in this area that juxtapose the cold and snowy slopes of the mountain. Enjoy the snow during the day and then relax at a ryokan at night!

Another famous onsen in this area is Ginzan Onsen, also in Yamagata! This is one of the most picturesque onsen towns in all of Japan with especially beautiful scenery during winter when white, powdery snow blankets the towns traditional architecture.

One of the most unique things to do in Japan during Winter is in Ichinoseki City in Iwate Prefecture. On the Satetsu River in the prefecture's countryside, people can take a ride on the river through the Geibikei Gorge in a traditional boat that is outfitted with kotatsu, specialized Japanese heated tables used during winter. Gently stroll down the river and relax with unbelievable winter scenery surrounding you as you stay warm from within the boat.

5 Day Tohoku Itinerary, Japan – 2024 Travel Guide

The Tohoku region in the very north of Honshu (Japan’s main island) plays home to the most beautiful, natural landscapes that I had no idea even existed in Japan!

I had the amazing opportunity to work with the Japan Tourism Board over the course of 5 days during the month of September (Autumn) to explore these less-touristy locations, specifically Aomori Prefecture and Akita Prefecture, which often get overlooked.

Tohoku is a place that has a much slower lifestyle compared to the busy cities of Japan, boasting incredible landscapes such as massive crater lakes, nature parks with flowing waterfalls, mouthwatering foodstuffs, rich cultural history, fun-fuelled activities, and an all-around friendly atmosphere.

TOHOKU ITINERARY

In this Tohoku travel guide, I have outlined my complete 5 Day Tohoku Itinerary with a list of all the locations I visited, my experience in these places, where I stayed, and some other useful information to help you plan your own trip to Aomori and Akita!

Arrival Aomori Airport

Upon arriving at Aomori Airport at around 9:00 am, we rented a car at the airport and we were swiftly on our way.

When renting a car from Aomori Airport, there is English-speaking staff that will be able to assist and answer any questions you may have about the road rules in Japan.

Oirase Gorge

Our first location in Aomori Prefecture was the Oirase Gorge, approximately 2 hours drive from Aomori Airport.

Oirase Gorge is said to be one of the most beautiful valleys in northern Japan boasting a running stream that is fed from the nearby Lake Towada and a number of pristine waterfalls!

I don’t know about you, but when I pictured Japan in my mind I never expected to see waterfalls so Oirase Gorge is a very special place well worthy of visiting.

We spent around 2 to 3 hours hiking upstream through Oirase Gorge along a well-maintained 9km walking track, stopping off at several waterfalls and crystalline rock pools to marvel at their natural beauty.

After a relatively long but easy hike in Oirase Gorge, we headed on to our next stop, Lake Towada.

Lake Towada

Lake Towada is said to be the clearest lake in all of Japan and one of the best things to do in Tohoku!

This huge crater lake features two peninsulas that extend out almost a third of the way across and the vibrant blue water contrasts beautifully next to the lush green trees that surround it.

There are a few options for viewing Lake Towada and they are onboard a sightseeing boat, on foot from the shores of the lake, or by driving up the hilly roads to one of many viewing platforms for extensive panoramic views.

Sightseeing boats on Lake Towada operate every hour from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, between April – October and the price is around 1,400 Yen per person.

After a wonderful afternoon spent at Lake Towada, we drove to the city of Hirosaki which is approximately 1.5 hours west of the lake.

There are dozens of accommodations to choose from in Hirosaki ranging from Luxury to Mid-Range and Budget hotels. Click Here to search all accommodations on Booking.com.

Tsugaru Museum

On Day 2 of our Tohoku itinerary, we kicked things off at the Tsugaru Museum to watch a traditional cultural performance known as Tsugaru Shamisen and after that, we wandered through the arts and crafts workshops watching the local artists carving out Japanese spin-tops on a wooden lathe.

The Tsugaru Museum is a great activity and experience to add to your list of things to do in the Tohoku region!

Shirakami-Sanchi

The next location on our Tohoku itinerary was Shirakami-Sanchi which is listed as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site since 1993.

Shirakami-Sanchi straddles the border between Aomori and Akita Prefectures and is home to the beautiful Anmon Gorge.

We spent the afternoon hiking through Anmon Gorge along forest trails, discovering spectacular waterfalls and wildlife along the way. It’s an easy to moderate hike that takes around 2 to 3 hours.

Hiking through Anmon Gorge was definitely the highlight of my day and it’s not to be missed on your list of things to do in Tohoku!

anmon gorge, shirakami-sanchi

From Anmon Gorge, we headed back to Hirosaki for the night which is approximately a 45-minute drive from the gorge.

Juniko Lakes

The following morning we left early to visit the famous Juniko Lakes in Akita Prefecture which is absolutely stunning and can easily be reached by an easy walking trail that leads through the forest.

My favorite lake, and the most popular at Juniko, is Aoike which translates to ‘Blue Pond’ and it lives up to its name with its vibrant, turquoise color, and the Autumn foliage floating on top of the water added to the beauty of this location.

We spent around 1 to 2 hours walking around the lakes and I also flew my Drone Camera  to capture some images of Juniko from an aerial perspective.

Godzilla Rock

That afternoon, we traveled further south to an epic landmark known as Godzilla Rock which is located along the coastline in Oga, Akita Prefecture.

Godzilla Rock resembles the face of Godzilla and is best visited at sunset when the sun is bright orange and it seems as if Godzilla has a fireball in its mouth.

The rocks are quite sharp and uneven along this section of coastline so mind your step when making your way from the car park to Godzilla Rock.

After watching an incredible sunset at Godzilla Rock we headed to Akita City for the night which is approximately a 1-hour drive south of Oga.

There are dozens of accommodations to choose from in Akita City ranging from Luxury to Mid-Range and Budget hotels. Click Here to search all accommodations on Booking.com.

Lake Tazawa – Things To Do In Tohoku

On Day 4 of our itinerary, we headed inland again from Akita City to Lake Tazawa which is most famous for being the deepest lake in Japan with a depth of 423 meters.

Lake Tazawa is quite similar to Lake Towada which we visited earlier on in the week, offering sightseeing boat tours and beautiful views from every angle.

A few popular attractions dotted around the edges of Lake Tazawa are the Red Torii Gate of Goza no Ishi Shrine and the golden statue of a legendary local girl, Tatsuko.

There is also a tar-sealed road that leads right around the circumference of Lake Tazawa, boasting a very peaceful drive with several viewpoints overlooking this spectacular crater lake.

It’s safe to say that Lake Tazawa is not to be missed on your list of things to do in Tohoku!

The most popular accommodations near Lake Tazawa to stay in are traditional Ryokan Onsens. The most famous ones are Tsurunoyu Onsen and Kuroyu Onsen.

Unfortunately, these accommodations aren’t available to be booked online but you can contact them directly via telephone or email. All it takes is a quick Google search for these details.

Kuroyu Onsen

Tamagawa Hotspring

On the last day of our itinerary, we made our way from Kuroyu Onsen to the Tamagawa Hotspring in Akita.

Tamagawa Hotspring, also referred to as Tamagawa Onsen, was once a sulfur mine that has since turned into a popular tourist attraction.

Not only is Tamagawa a popular attraction, but the hot springs and surrounding areas are said to cure illnesses such as cancer. During our visit, we saw hundreds of Japanese people laying around on mats close to the sulfuric fumes that filled the air. It was definitely a unique experience and something you don’t see every day.

The landscape surrounding the hot springs is spectacular and there is an easy walking trail that takes you right through the center of it all.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The currency in Japan is Yen (¥) and the exchange rate is approximately $1 USD = 100 ¥.

Purchasing a sim card in Japan is very simple. You can do this at the airport on arrival or find a convenience store close to your accommodation. For approximately $40 USD, you can get a local sim card that comes with 10GB of data.

There are plenty of ATMs in Japan located in most convenient stores, in front of banks, inside hotels, etc. where you can easily withdraw cash.

Most Japanese people can speak English, so if you are ever lost or need help with something you will be able to converse in English.

Also, all the signs at the airports, train stations, shopping malls, etc. are written in both Japanese and English.

BEST TIME TO VISIT JAPAN

The best time to visit Japan depends on what you plan to do. I personally prefer the spring and summer months in Japan (April – September) when temperatures are warm and the landscapes are vividly green.

However, visiting Japan in winter (December – March) is absolutely magical because the landscapes are completely covered in glistening white snow.

Visiting Japan in winter also means you have to opportunity to go skiing and snowboarding in Japan’s alpine regions.

tohoku travel books

  • tsunagu Japan

Japan’s remote Tohoku region is located in the north of mainland Honshu, and is blessed with vast natural beauty and a wealth of cultural treasures. In this article, we’ll introduce our recommended Tohoku travel destinations to help you plan your Japan itinerary. From the cherry blossoms of Hirosaki Park to the autumn foliage of Naruko Gorge, plus the samurai estates of Kakunodate and Ghibli-esque hot springs of Ginzan Onsen, there’s guaranteed to be a destination you’ll want to visit in Tohoku!

Check out our writers’ top Japan travel ideas!

Aomori Prefecture: Full of Nature and Culture Spots

Oirase gorge: a verdant, relaxing area with clear streams.

Oirase Gorge is one of the most scenic areas in Aomori Prefecture. It’s a place to enjoy the seasonal beauty of azure blue skies, gentle mountain streams, fierce waterfalls, verdant forests, and unique rock formations and landscapes. Most people visit Oirage Gorge between May and June when the area comes alive with spring verdure, and between late October and early November when you can enjoy Oirase’s fall foliage.

Hirosaki Castle: The Top Spot for Cherry Blossoms in Aomori

Hirosaki Castle, which is known as the best place for cherry blossoms in Aomori Prefecture, was built in 1611 by the second head of the Hirosaki clan, remaining their main residence and the locality’s center of power for 260 years. The area around the castle eventually became Hirosaki Park, where the local residents now go to relax. Starting in late April, the area comes alive with people from all around who visit the park to admire its roughly 2,600 cherry trees in bloom.

The castle keep that was rebuilt in 1810, together with the three watchtowers and five castle gates that retain their form from the time the castle was first built, have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

Iwate Prefecture: Enjoy Its Deep History

Chuson-ji temple: a gorgeous cultural treasure that embodies the splendor of the oshu fujiwara clan.

Chuson-ji, part of the Hiraizumi World Heritage Site (designated in 2011), is an ancient temple that was founded in 850. After its founding, Kiyohira, the first lord of the Oshu Fujiwara Clan, undertook a 20-year construction project of an extensive complex on its grounds that was dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives in all the battles that raged throughout the Tohoku region during the latter half of the 11th century.

The highlight of the temple complex is Konjikido, built in 1124. It is a dazzling hall covered inside and out with gold leaf, and it contains an enshrined image of the Amitabha Buddha. It is the only building that remains intact in its original form today.

Sankozo is a treasure hall that houses more than 3,000 Chuson-ji treasures, including many National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Be sure to pay a visit so that you can experience a bit of the dazzling culture of the Heian period that blossomed throughout these lands back when the area was known as “Mutsu.”

Miyagi Prefecture: Nature Abound

Matsushima: a stunning scenery created by the many islands of matsushima bay.

Matsushima is considered one of Japan’s three most scenic spots, together with Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture and Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture. Made up of 260 islands dotting the calm Matsushima Bay, the view over Matsushima is simply stunning. Take a ride on a cruise to see it all up close.

There are four viewing points located in the north, south, east and west of Matsushima Bay to get a great look at the entire area.

The Godaido temple hall, considered a symbol of Matsushima, was rebuilt in 1604 by Date Masamune, one of Tohoku's most famous and popular warlords, and is now a designated Important Cultural Property.

There is a lot to see in Matsushima, so if you’re ever in the area, be sure to take your time to enjoy it.

Naruko Gorge: A Picturesque Ravine with Sheer Cliffs and Unique Rock Formations

Naruko Gorge is located in the city of Osaki in northwest Miyagi Prefecture, at the border of Yamagata Prefecture.

It is a V-shaped gorge created by the Daiya River, a tributary to the Eai River that flows from northern to central Miyagi Prefecture, and has sheer cliffs that are up to 100 meters tall and 2.5 km long.

The Naruko Gorge Ofukasawa Trail is a wonderful hiking path where you can enjoy fresh verdure between late April and early July, and colorful fall foliage between late October and early November.

You can enjoy panoramic views of the Ofukasawa Bridge from the observation platform at the Naruko Gorge Rest House, so be sure to check it out if you’re ever in the area.

Akita Prefecture: Learn More About Northern Japan's History and Culture

Kakunodate: the little kyoto of michinoku and its many samurai houses.

This is a popular tourist area among both Japanese and foreign tourists who come to enjoy the charming townscape consisting of numerous old structures like samurai houses, all located in a compact, historic area that’s just 2 km in diameter. The main street has been designated as an Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings by the government and is protected as a cultural property.

Kakunodate's scenery offers something different with each season, from the spring cherry blossoms to the early summer fresh verdure, the colorful fall foliage, or winter snowscapes. However, the area is particularly famous for its cherry blossoms. During the cherry blossom season, which lasts from late April to early May, many tourists gather to enjoy the beautiful contrast between the black walls of the samurai houses and the pale pink of the weeping cherry blossoms.

Our Top Tips

JR Pass for Whole Japan

Explore Japan in the most convenient and economical way with a Japan Rail Pass! It is valid for the majority of railways and local buses operated by JR.

Nyuto Onsen: Enjoy the Seasonal Beauty of the Village

Nyuto Onsen, located at the foot of the Nyuto Mountains, northeast of Japan's deepest lake, Lake Tazawa, is one of Akita Prefecture's most famous hot spring villages. There are seven hot springs and seven inns in the area which is surrounded by virgin Japanese beech forests. Every inn draws its water from a different source, so each hot spring has a unique texture and benefits. They all accept day-trip visitors, so why not make a day of it and visit as many as you can? The village is located in the middle of the beautiful nature of Akita, which offers something unique and beautiful with each season.

Yamagata Prefecture: Spend a Great Time in the Vast Outdoors

Ginzan onsen: where warm gaslights and hot spring steam create a nostalgic atmosphere.

One of Yamagata Prefecture's most famous onsen hot spring villages, Ginzan Onsen is a charming tourist destination where 100-year-old wooden structures line the banks of the Ginzan River. The greatest appeal of Ginzan Onsen is its retro townscape full of delightful retro buildings, cobblestone streets, and gaslights that engulf the village in warm light during the evenings. When you’re at Ginzan Onsen, you feel as if you’ve traveled 100 years back in time.

The best time to visit Ginzan Onsen is in the winter when the snow-covered village looks magical with all the steam from the hot springs and the warm light of the gaslights hanging above it.

Recommended Hotel in Ginzan Onsen: Ginzanso

Risshaku-ji Temple: The View Will Leave You Breathless

Risshaku-ji Temple, which was founded in 860 by Jikaku Daishi, a priest of the Tendai school of Buddhism, has long been revered as one of Tohoku's most sacred places.

The temple is affectionately referred to as "Yamadera" (mountain temple) as it has structures on the side of a steep mountain, including the Konpon Chudo hall (a national treasure), the Nio gate, the Godai-do hall, and the Kaisan-do hall.

Risshaku-ji is also famous as the place where Matsuo Basho, a famous Japanese poet, composed one of his most famous poems: "Deep silence, the shrill of cicadas, seeps into rocks."

The Godai-do hall, which was built to appear as if it was protruding out of a sheer cliff, enshrines the Godai Myo-O (Five Great Wisdom Kings) and is said to be the place where Jikaku Daishi prayed for peace on earth. It is the best viewing spot in the entire temple complex, offering amazing views of townscapes and the surrounding mountains.

Fukushima Prefecture: Fantastic Views, Hot Springs, and More Await

Ouchi-juku: travel 400 years back in time.

Ouchi-juku, which is nestled among the mountains of Shimogo in the Minami Aizu District of Fukushima, was built 400 years ago as a post town on the road connecting the city of Aizu-Wakamatsu in Fukushima to Imaichi in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture.

There are more than 30 thatched roof houses found along the road here, making you feel as if you’ve traveled back to the time when the town was first founded. Ouchi-juku became a registered Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings in 1981.

The Miharashidai observation deck on top of a hill called Mt. Yudono offers amazing panoramic views of the thatched roof houses on both sides of the road, and is a popular photo spot.

The Tohoku region

The Tohoku region in the northeast of Japan's main island of Honshu is a hidden gem with amazing and intriguing sights to see. For example, you've probably heard of the largest city in Tohoku, Sendai City, located in Miyagi Prefecture . Aomori Prefecture 's Oirase Gorge is so pretty that one would be forgiven for thinking they've wandered into a fairytale when stepping in! Dakigaeri Valley down in Akita Prefecture is a must-see site for autumn leaves, and the impressive frozen "snow monster" trees of Yamagata's Zao Juhyo continue to attract curious visitors from all over the world. These are but a few of the more well-known sights in the region. Tohoku is also full of cultural charm. Local festivals like the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri and Sendai Tanabata each have unique themes and traditions to discover. Does the plethora of potential things to see and do in the region intimidate you from planning a trip there? That's what we're here for! We've compiled a starter list of recommended sights, activities, accommodations, and local foods in the six prefectures of Miyagi, Aomori , Yamagata, Akita, and Fukushima for your handy reference. As a bonus, we also share notes about Tohoku's climate and other useful transport tips. We're confident this list will allow you and your travel group to spend more time having fun than planning for it!

Weather and Climate

(Image: PIXTA)

Compared to the Kansai and Kanto regions, Tohoku is located farther north and thus temperatures are lower than usual all year round. The climate is generally cool and dry. Spring (March to May) is quite a bit colder, with an average temperature of about 10°C (50°F). In fact, for northern prefectures like Aomori facing the neighboring island of Hokkaido, the coldness can persist until late March, and it may even snow during this period. In these regions, cherry blossom season starts from mid-April to late May, slightly later than usual. If planning your visit in these months, bring a jacket or coat along, just in case. However, don't fret too much about wearing winter boots. Just a pair of comfortable sneakers will serve you very well! Also, your coat doesn't have to be winter -grade since the weather starts warming up halfway through April. The main goal is to avoid catching a cold when gallivanting outside and upsetting your carefully plotted itinerary!

tohoku travel books

Summer begins from June and the weather is much warmer during this time. However, due to the fact that it also coincides with the monsoon season , the temperature remains an average of 20°C (68°F). Even during the peak of summer in July and August, the average temperature is a comfortable 25°C (77°F) - quite cool compared to the weather in Tokyo at the same time! That may also be why many local tourists travel to Oirase Gorge and Lake Tazawa in Tohoku during summer to avoid the stifling heat back home. Do note that it sometimes hits a sweltering 30°C (86°F) in Tohoku, so public transport and indoor facilities often have cold air-conditioning switched on. You could pair short-sleeved outdoor gear with a light jacket for occasions when you may need to step indoors. Since it may rain during this time, having a raincoat handy may be useful as well.

tohoku travel books

Autumn descends upon the region from September to November and the weather turns chillier during this time, averaging 15°C (59°F). Since this is also when green leaves start turning yellow in the area, Oirase Gorge and Dakigaeri Valley become popular spots for autumn leaves viewing .

tohoku travel books

Tohoku sees snow in early winter (December to February) and the temperature drops to between 0-5°C (32-41°F) during this time. Snow accumulates easily in mountainous regions and its excellent quality supports the many well-known ski resorts in the area. This period is also peak season for tourism in Tohoku as visitors swarm into the region to feast their eyes on the incredible winter views in Ginzan Onsen and Ouchi-juku , not to mention the many other interesting sights to be discovered from the sightseeing trains available here as well. Staying warm and comfortable should be your top priority when packing for a visit this season . Nevertheless, since indoor facilities often have heaters running, layering up is probably the way to go for quick adjustments when necessary!

How to Get to Tohoku

(Image: PIXTA)

Flights to Tohoku Each of the six prefectures in Tohoku is served by a major airport , namely: Sendai Airport , Aomori Airport , Akita Airport , Yamagata Airport , Fukushima Airport , and Iwate Prefecture 's Hanamaki Airport . These airports are accessible by direct or transfer flights from Tokyo and even from several countries abroad. The number of available flights may have been reduced due to the pandemic, but more flights are likely to be added as time goes by. Keep this in mind when planning for your next Tohoku trip! Of all the airports in Tohoku, only Sendai Airport is directly connected to a train station, whereas the others offer highway bus services that will take you to a variety of destinations. For example, buses in Aomori Airport can take you to Aomori City or Hirosaki City, Akita Airport has buses that go to Akita Station, Yamagata Airport has direct buses to Ginzan Onsen , and so on.

From Tokyo: Shinkansen or highway bus If you're already in Tokyo, it's easy to simply hop on a Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train or highway bus to get to Tohoku. The Shinkansen will take about one to three hours depending on your destination, the farthest station of Yamagata taking about three hours and 40 minutes. One-way tickets start from 10,000 yen. Highway buses are much more economical in comparison. Taking a Shinkansen to Aomori 's Hachinohe Station, for example, will cost about 16,990 yen one-way, whereas a highway bus ticket starts from 7,800 yen, though it does take the bus about five to 10 hours of traveling on the road to arrive. Nevertheless, since these are usually night buses, all you have to do is close your eyes and wake up at your destination the next morning, fresh and ready to begin your day of sightseeing. Definitely something to consider for the budget conscious! (Pro-tip: Always look up the official websites of train and bus operators for the latest ticket prices first to avoid price shock!)

Getting Around Tohoku

(Image: PIXTA)

One of the best ways to travel around Tohoku on a self-guided tour is by rail. Taking into consideration how big the region is and how far apart places of interest are from each other, trains will save you a lot of money as long as you get a comprehensive transit pass like the JR East Pass, which allows you to enjoy unlimited rides on valid railway lines for five days. The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass), which also offers unlimited rides on JR lines, is also an excellent way to see this region. It's definitely easier to squeeze more sights into your itinerary when you're not held back by budget constraints!

Rent a car Or if you have an international driver's license, renting a car is another convenient way of getting around. With your own vehicle, you're not restricted to where the trains take you, and it's trivially easy to rent a car for this purpose from any of the Tohoku airports. This is absolutely the best way to get around for those traveling with families or intending to visit places off the beaten track. Word of caution: Traffic laws in Japan are strictly upheld and you will likely be briefed about them when signing the rental form so listen very carefully! Driving in winter is also a lot harder than what it seems, especially if you're from a country that doesn't see much snow. Make sure you're fully equipped with all the necessities before setting off!

(Image: PIXTA)

Sendai and Zao are among the most popular tourist destinations in Miyagi. In case you didn't know, Sendai is the biggest city in the Tohoku region and it only takes about 1.5 hours to get to Sendai from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Scenic natural sights like Naruko Gorge and Okama abound in Sendai. You'll also catch glimpses of history here and there, since the city of Sendai was founded by feudal warlord Masamune Date during the Sengoku period of Japan (1467 to 1615 C.E.). Traces of Date's historic presence can be found in such well-known buildings as Sendai Castle and Zuihoden Temple . Sendai Airport is an international airport with direct flights to and from many major cities worldwide, so this is an excellent place to begin your Tohoku trip! Each season in Miyagi Prefecture is charming in its own special way. If you're visiting in spring , don't miss the sakura of Hitome Senbonzakura at Shiraishi River Embankment. The grand Sendai Tanabata Festival held in summer is another must-see sight. Autumn is best spent at the observatory deck in Naruko Gorge, admiring the vivid fall leaves . And don't forget about the legendary Juhyo "tree monsters" that appear on Mount Zao during winter ! All in all, this is a great place to do sightseeing at any time of the year.

Best Places to Visit in The Tohoku Region – Complete Guide to Tohoku!

Things to do in Tohoku

Traditionally, Japan can be divided into nine regions. Subsequently each region consists of several prefectures . The regions are based on their geographical and historical background but do not function as administrative, independent regions. Each region has its own dialect , customs, and unique traditional culture, and different regions can offer striking contrast in everything. For example people from Osaka (Kansai) are known to be more direct than people from Tokyo (Kanto), but also the cuisine and traditions can be very different.

What impression do you have of the Tohoku region ? Is there something that comes to mind when you hear the word? Most internationals had no idea or knowledge about the region until they heard the news about the big earthquake that hit the area in 2011, also known as the Tohoku Earthquake. Although it is true that people living there have suffered from several difficulties after the unforgettable disaster, but there are so many beautiful, unique and amazing places to visit. The area is much more than just the site of the earthquake and the nuclear accident that followed. Each prefecture in the region has a number of tourist attractions that are great to visit. In this article, we will give you an overview of each area and its tourist spots you shouldn’t miss!

The Tohoku region consists of six prefectures and they can be divided into two areas based on their location; four prefectures on the Pacific Ocean side, and two others facing the Sea on Japan. If you start your trip from Tokyo, taking the bullet train called the Tohoku Shinkansen is the easiest way to get to all of the prefectures on the Pacific Ocean side. It only takes one and a half hours to reach the first destination, Fukushima prefecture.

For Yamagata and Akita, you need to take a different Shinkansen called the Yamagata Shinkansen or Akita Shinkansen. It might sound a little complicated, but both cities are accessible without a transfer and you can use the JR Pass to ride both Shinkansen lines. Just be careful not to take the wrong Shinkansen. Domestic flights are also available from major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, but it requires you to take other public transportation from the airport to get to the center of the cities.

Akita is a mountainous prefecture which faces the Sea of Japan. It is located to the North of Yamagata, and known as a large producer of rice among other products. Although the severe climate typical of the Western side of Japan brings heavy snowfall in winter and a limited amount of sunshine during the day, it also offers some benefits such as great winter sport conditions and beautiful nature. It also has a number of hot spring resorts to relax at, some with amazing traditional atmosphere and buildings.

Lake Tazawa is the deepest lake in Japan with the iconic bronze statue called Tatsuko-zo. There are other enjoyable tourist spots around it, which makes the entire area a perfect location for a relaxing long stay for tourists. Kakunodate is a historical district where a number of Samurai residences back in the Edo era still remain. It is allowed to enter some of them and explore the inside filled with valuable exhibits. The landscape reminds the famous trip destination Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, even though the size of the district is relatively small and easy to walk around within a day.

Nebuta festival Aomori

Aomori is the northernmost prefecture on the main island of Japan. It is a home to one of the biggest summer festivals in Japan which is called Nebuta Festival in which participants dance around the city while pulling the giant floats which represent famous warriors and the gods in Japanese mythology. Hirosaki Castle is another must visit situated in the heart of the city, which offers a memorable scenery with 2,600 cherry blossoms in spring!

If you want to visit more informative places, Sannai Maruyama Special Historical Sites enables you to discover the ancient living of people in Japan. It is an archeological site of an ancient village during the Jomon era in Japan. The reconstructed structures dating back around 5,500 are scattered in the 40 hectares site, and it gives you an incomparable experience that you can never have anywhere else.

Ouchi juku Fukushima

Fukushima is the closest to Tokyo amongst the Tohoku prefectures and has gained unintentional world wide fame because of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after being hit by the 2011 earthquake, an unforgettable tragedy. Some might think it is still dangerous to go to the area, but it has been rapidly recovering from the accident, and is slowly being restored to what it was like before the earthquake. In addition, a lot of effort has been made in order to preserve particular structures and sites which tell the truth of the tragedy to us so that we will never forget about it. There are still some places off limit until this day, but most of the area is safe to access and even live in.

Are you interested in seeing all of the progress that has been made since the 2011 earthquake and disaster, and even have the chance to enter the nuclear power plant? Join us on our tour of the beautiful coastal area with a guide who can explain everything, as well as meet the locals who experienced everything first hand.

There are also a number of tourist attractions which weren’t damaged during the earthquake and following tsunami. Ouchi-juku refers to a specific street full of Japanese traditional houses. During the Edo era, it was used as a post station (also known as post town), which offered an accommodation for travelers. Exploring the area will makes you feel as if you have traveled back to the Edo era!

Goshiki Numa is another must-visit which is comprised of a cluster of ponds and lakes situated in Mount Bandai. The color of each pond is slightly different, and occasionally changes based on the climate and season. Please visit the article below to find out more about Fukushima!

Chusonji-temple Iwate

Iwate is the second largest prefecture in Japan following Hokkaido , and shares a border with Miyagi prefecture to the south. It also faces the Pacific Ocean, and received a tremendous damage by the disastrous tsunami and the earthquake in 2011. Although the entire prefecture is designated as a heavy snowfall area, the amount of snow they have annually varies depending on each area.

If you have never traveled to Iwate before, the first destination you should put in your itinerary is Chuson-ji Temple. It is a Tendai Sect Buddhist temple dating back to 850. The highlight of the temple is a golden hall called Konjiki-do, which is listed among the National Treasure in Japan and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ryusendo Cave is also worth visiting, it has the deepest underground lake in Japan with the mysterious atmosphere. Iwate also offers a great environment for animals with its geographical advantage suitable for running farms. Koiwai Farm is one of the most popular farms visited by around 700,000 people every year!

Places to visit in Miyagi

Miyagi is the most urbanized prefecture in Tohoku region with its over 2 million population. It faces the Pacific Ocean, and the prefectural capital called Sendai holds almost the half of the whole population. It was in the Sengoku era, which refers to a specific time in the middle ages in Japanese history, when it started to grow as a powerful clan under the control of Date Masamune, the first feudal lord of the Sendai clan. While it still continues to develop and become more urbanized, there are a lot of well-preserved historical sites related to the Date family.

On the other hand, it has a number of beautiful parks and relaxing spots full of nature. Matsushima is the most recommendable one, which is the cluster of around 260 islands floating on the Matsushima Port. It is officially listed among the three most scenic spots in Japan. A comfortable cruise tour is also available, which enables you to observe each island closely with excitement!

Ginzan Onsen

What you can’t miss during your stay in Japan are onsen; amazing hot springs which help you unwind and recover from the exhaustion from a long trip and give you a beautiful, soft skin. Yamagata has numerous hot spring resorts, and Zao Onsen and Ginzan Onsen are perfect options for onsen beginners! Not only the hot springs itself, but also the landscape and other activities available there make your stay even more enjoyable! Just like other areas facing the Sea of Japan, Yamagata receives heavy snowfall in winter, which makes it a famous winter sports resort as well.

It may surprise you, but about the 85% of the area of Yamagata is said to be occupied by the forests and the mountains. This unique feature has created several historical spots where you can feel the sacred atmosphere of the mountain worship continuing over centuries. The traditional temples and buildings standing there will help you understand the deep side of Japan along with onsen experience!

It may be a bit tough to convince you to add Tohoku to your list of destinations if you have never been to Japan before. However, you can add them to your itinerary along with other typical tourist destinations like Tokyo, and make a better plan with our helpful tours! We hope you have learned a thing or two about the Tohoku Region with our guide of the best places to visit, and that we may have inspired you to make a trip up north.

DESTINATION Tohoku

  • Destinations

The Tohoku region of Japan is home to unspoiled rural landscapes and historical treasures, outdoor summer adventures and endless powder snow in the winter

Japan's northeastern wilderness is a huge region encompassing six rural prefectures, bound together by custom, heritage and recent tragedy. The devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck in 2011 brought out the resilient nature of Tohoku's people, and local passion and pride are putting the area back on its feet. There's a lot to be proud of—dramatic landscapes, history-rich sites, craft sake and a host of outdoor activities like rafting, hiking and skiing. Much more rural than Tokyo yet more developed than Hokkaido , the Tohoku region makes for exciting excursions from the capital and memorable side trips on the journey to the northernmost region of Japan's main islands.

  • The explosive sound, color and drama of the Aomori Nebuta Festival in summer
  • The temples, gardens and archaeological sites of World Heritage-listed Hiraizumi, in Iwate
  • Sweet cherries in Yamagata and juicy peaches in Fukushima
  • Easy access from Tokyo or Hokkaido on speedy bullet trains to Aomori and Akita

What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 555 REVIEWS

Billy, our guide was wonderful and very informative. Our driver was super and the van was just the right size. The 2 other guests were the best.

The tours was very interesting as it allows me to have a very good idea about Japan. I was able to visit many places such as temple, shrines, castle, Japanese gardens as well as historical places. Additionally, the tour allowed me to have nice experience from Japan such as the good food, Tea ceremony, the rapid train and typical Japanese Hotel. Furthermore, I have discovered through the tour the lovely nature of Japan and learned a lot of information about its history and its tradition.

Absolute;ly loved the tour! Billy was a fantastic guide and very informative about the culture and entertaining.

This was a fantastic way to see Japan. We saw so many sites and we had the opportunity to experience so many things. Learning how to make sushi was not only fun, but it was also a tasty lunch. Billy was a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. Kamata San is definitely a highly skilled bus driver. Learning about the varying cuisines in the different regions of Japan was a delicious lesson to learn.

Great variety of places, unique experiences and entertaining, informative Guide. AJT staff very helpful - good to have personal service.
